ABSTRACT
This research aimed to analyze the portrayal of people with disabilities (PWDs) in Nigerian broadcast media by conducting a case study of TVC and Channels TV. Through a combination of content analysis and key informant interview, the study examined the frequency, tone, and stereotypical representation of disability across the stations' programming. The content analysis covered an 11-month period spanning January to November 2023 and analyzed 15 programs featuring PWDs.
The findings indicate that both TVC and Channels TV exhibit low frequency of coverage, with only a few dedicated programs showcasing PWDs annually. However, the overall tone of portrayal tends to be predominantly positive or neutral, highlighting the strengths and abilities of PWDs rather than limitations. The content also actively avoids stigmatizing stereotypes, instead broadcasting empowering messages that promote inclusiveness and equal participation of PWDs. This suggests deliberate efforts by the stations for sensitive and responsible portrayals, aligning with standards of professionalism, truthfulness and balance emphasized during interviews. 
Nonetheless, the limited visibility of disability issues points to significant room for improvement regarding inclusion and representation in programming. The study provides recommendations for increasing dedicated coverage through specialized shows, training media personnel, collaborating with disability advocacy groups, and strengthening quality control processes. Further research could explore incorporating audience perspectives, inter-sectional identities, impacts of representation and additional Nigerian broadcast channels.

Background:The use of social media platforms by governments to communicate policy decisions and engage with citizens has become increasingly popular. In Nigeria, the government has utilized social media platforms such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to disseminate information and solicit feedback on various policy initiatives.In 2016, the Nigerian government introduced a new rice policy aimed at promoting self-sufficiency in rice production and reducing dependence on imports. The policy was announced on various social media platforms, sparking intense debate and discussion among citizens. Objective: This study analysed the engagement pattern and comments of Nigerian citizens on the government's framing of the 2016 rice policy on Facebook and X platforms. Specifically, the study sought to examine how citizens responded to the policy announcement, the nature of their comments and engagements, and the implications of these interactions for policy-making and democratic governance in Nigeria. Method: Forty-eight posts from April to December, 2016 on government accounts-Aso Rock Villa; Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development or Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and Muhammadu Buhari, were content analysed using a coding sheet. The analysis was done using descriptive statistics and presented using frequency tables. Result: The Nigerian government's use of the social media in driving its rice policy was borne out of the desire to reach more audience about the policy. This the government was able to achieve with the use of pictures, videos and texts which were strategically designed, produced and worded to drive the policy of the government on rice. The engagement patterns, showing those who reacted to the posts of the Nigerian government on the rice policy, indicated that majority of them made use of the Like interactive button, then the Share or Retweet and Comment interactive signals. Conclusion: The study concludes that the Nigerian government made use of the social media-Facebook and X in driving the rice policy. The engagement patterns, showing those who reacted to the posts of the Nigerian government on the rice policy, indicated that majority of them accepted the rice policy of the government. Also, there are more posts on the rice policy on the Facebook handles of the government that the ones on X.

Different socio-cultural variables, nowadays, have influenced the English language in different societies. Given this, it is understandable why Pidgin English has evolved into the various Nigerian languages, giving Nigerians a platform to express their cultural values. This paper, therefore, evaluated perception of Yenegoa Residents on the Use of Pidgin English in Radio Programmes. The paper was guided by three research objectives while anchoring it on Development Media Theory and Language Use Theory. The study adopted a survey research design to carry out the investigation. Three hundred and seventy-nine (379) respondents were selected for the study, using Calculator.net to determine the sample size while questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The study found that larger proportion of respondents listen to Pidgin English programmes on People's FM 93.1 while their most preferred programme is Corner-Corner Talk. In view of the findings, it was recommended that the use of Pidgin English in broadcasting should be encouraged since it is a good medium of communication in Bayelsa state, and that since Pidgin English is more likely to be understood and interpreted efficiently, broadcast media and government agencies should also try to use it to package their grassroots programmes and development-oriented messages.

This study examines the interplay between cyberspace and traditional foreign policy, addressing two key questions: (1) How does cyberspace influence foreign policy decision-making? and (2) What framework can integrate factors from real and cyber politics to guide leaders during conflicts? Using a rationalist lens, this study proposes a model centered on leadership, emphasizing two variables: perceived hostility and balance of power dynamics. The model categorizes state-led cyber actions into three levels-cyber espionage, destabilization, and conflict-based on attribution risks and geopolitical conditions. Empirical analyses of cases such as Stuxnet, Russia-Ukraine, and U.S.-China cyber activities demonstrate how leaders rationally select cyber actions to navigate complex geopolitical and cyber landscapes. This research advances our understanding of cyber-enabled statecraft and offers a structured framework for policymakers to address emerging challenges in the digital age.

The focus of the paper is to examine the interaction of the broadcast media through their programming patterns with various societal institutions in the process of nation building. Essentially, the paper highlights the patterns of broadcast programming in the building and development process of a nation. The paper also showcases the programming patterns of selected Lagos-based radio and television stations, ascertaining the level of functionality and contributions of the media industry to nation building. It highlights the factors affecting programming patterns in Nigeria and also draws attention to the implications and challenges of the present trend in programming patterns in Nigeria.

Turkish workers who emigrated from their country to Germany could reunify with their families; and now their descendants live there as German citizens. During turmoils and wars in The Middle East, Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina many people fled their countries and immigrated to Germany as refugees and asylum seekers. Most of the refugees were Muslim and they all built their own communities, mosques and businesses as Turks had done before. They are Muslims; however, they have different cultures, languages, and denominations. They have had differences among themselves, moreover after decades of living in Germany their successful integration is still a question. We present a historical overview of the integration of Muslims in Germany, discuss the reasons for its failure and highlight the fears that non-Muslims and Muslims face in an increasingly Muslim society. We argue that in the future, society will have to face these fears, not to suppress them, but to take them seriously and find ways to allay them and thus ensure peaceful coexistence between people of different worldviews in a Western multicultural society.

O capítulo investiga o papel da gesticulação paralinguística no processo didático, articulando-a à retórica da enunciação e aos percursos narrativos do discurso pedagógico. A partir da semiótica tensiva e das categorias actanciais, analisa-se como o professor, enquanto sujeito competencializador, mobiliza modalidades epistêmicas, aléticas e veredictórias por meio de estratégias persuasivas corporais. A gesticulação é descrita como fenômeno gradual e co-verbal, capaz de intensificar a expressividade, configurar ethos e produzir efeitos de sentido que ultrapassam a simples redundância da oralidade. O estudo propõe parâmetros analíticos baseados em deslocamento, aceleração, esforço e duração, vinculando a motricidade corporal às dimensões figurativas e figurais da linguagem. A análise exemplificativa da enunciação de Maria da Conceição Tavares evidencia como gestos modulam tensões discursivas, intensificam conteúdos e reforçam a eficácia retórica da aula. Conclui-se que a gesticulação constitui limite e possibilidade da expressão pedagógica, ao mesmo tempo condicionada pela fisiologia do corpo e ampliada pela sua capacidade simbólica e afetiva, sendo elemento central para compreender a interdependência entre corpo, linguagem e ensino.

There is need for integration of conflict resolution education into local governance to foster greater literacy in local communities' peaceful administration and enhanced knowledge on handling community grievances constructively rather than resorting to violence.

The objective of this paper is to determine the place of cultural heritage in newspapers, radio, television broadcasts and online media. Metadata from the Conseil National de la Communication (CNC) and Annuaire du Secteur de la Communication et des Médias (ASCM 2019) were analyzed. These traditional and online radio, as well as television stations, were selected based on their responsibility as state institutions. Thus, 13 radio stations, including 2 public and 11 private dealing with 11,397 subjects in the spoken news, are the subject of the research. A total of 354 radio programs were analyzed. In the online media, 765 articles were posted. The findings show that cultural information is relegated to second place in radio and television news and online media. Only 53 cultural items out of 765, i.e., a rate of 0.6%, are relayed online. Jimbere Magazine took the lead with 39 cultural items out of the 53 broadcasts on the 13 radio stations, at a rate of 73.5%. The political and educational sectors attracted more attention to the public and private media, respectively with 160 and 116 items, a rate of 20% and 15%. Overall, out of 11,397 subjects covered in the news on 13 radio stations broadcasting in Burundi, 11 items related to cultural heritage were broadcast, accounting for 0.43%. This has also been observed with television news at 0.5%, while no television programs related to culture were broadcast on three TV channels, namely RTNB, REMA, and MASHARIKI.

In this article, we present the results of a research that aimed to analyze the LibrasPortuguese interpreters’ work during the COVID-19 pandemic based on three different speech genres: conference, lecture, and musical lives. To this end, we adopted the simple self-confrontation methodology, developed in the context of the French Activity Clinic, and placed Libras interpreters who worked from these genres face to face with their performances. Based on a theoretical articulation established between Bakhtinian thought and sign language translation and interpretation studies, the analysis undertaken, vertically and horizontally, revealed that the dynamics of the pandemic imposed linguistic, procedural and relational demands and adjustments on interpreters.

The changing nature of communication and media studies necessitate the need for a media text that addresses the changing narratives in the discipline and brings the communication and media scholars up to date with the praxis of the disciplines. In an attempt to diffuse the contemporary thoughts in the field, a total of fifty two essays are presented in this text by senior academics, scholars and practitioners. We agree that there is a no-one-fit-all-text in the field of communication and media studies. However, in this text, a conscious attempt has been made to touch the various strads of the disciplines in order to realise the gestalt effect-the parts make the whole. From the earliest study on media effect, the media were conceived to be all powerful. Later studies revealed the intervening variables that limit the power of the media in creating very powerful effect. Again, the technology of mediated communication keeps changing, the metamorphosis of such changes result into new paradigms and ways of consuming the media. Thus, our attempt in this text is to bring to the fore contemporary thinking about the media and communication. In chapter one, Prof. Umaru Pate & Dr. Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi touched on the subject of press freedom and ethical orientation in democratic Nigeria. The chapter underscores the fact that press freedom is the hallmark of democracy. However, they cautioned that freedom has a corresponding responsibility. This is why there is no clear absolute freedom for the press around the world. They called for value orientation in reporting conflicts situations if they must remain responsible press working in the public interest.Chapter two is authored by Prof. Ezekiel S. Asemah; Olayemi A. Ajibulu & Bello M. Beli. They did a critical analysis of slangs in select Nigerian music videos. They argued that slangs are expressions used by a subgroup to communicate ideas. The authors used textual analysis to analyse select music videos in which the slangs used have become part of the youth culture in Nigeria.The thrust of chapter three is a textual analysis of comments on select social media sites on Chidinma Ojukwu's alleged murder case, written by Prof. Ezekiel S. Asemah; Emeke P. Nwaoboli & Bello M. Beli. The paper focuses on the power of the social media in crime discourse. However, they asserted that only if the process of producing and reporting information matches the ever-changing condition of the crisis and media decisions suit the demands of the target audience, can social media comments play a constructive part in regulating and managing a crisis (Soltanifar & Mortazavi, 2008). Chapter four focuses on the listenership and viewership of broadcasting in hypercompetitive market in relation to the dictum that 'content is King' by Osakpolor Emwinromwankhoe & Prof. Akpan Udo Uwem. The authors looked at the power of content in determining audience flow and advertisers' interest. The authors argued that in a competitive broadcast market, content remains the driver of the audience and the advertisers. They called for the creation of quality content that appeals to the audience and which can ultimately attract advertisers' interest.Chapter five focuses on the public sphere as alternative platform for free speech in emerging democracies. Written by Dr.Daniel O. Ekhareafo, it argued that the public sphere has become ingrained in our society and a potential tool for free expression. The author reasonedthat against the frequent clampdown on media organisations which government perceives to be adversarial to its course, the public sphere remains the vocal tool for the watchdog role against government excesses. Drawing inferences from the 2012 subsidy protest, 2014 political protest against insecurity and the Netizens' reactions against National Broadcasting Commission's (NBC) suspension of AIT's television operating license in 2020. This work strongly reaffirms that our poor political culture, especially intolerance for opposition which he reasoned can only be addressed in a platform that gives citizens unrestricted access. This study is a critical policy analysis on broadcasting reform in Ghana between 1992 and 2008 with a particular interest in critically tracking and examining the changes that occurred in broadcasting policy and regulation. Beyond the intrinsic value and relevance of policy and regulation, this study focuses on the factors and forces that are generative of the changes as occurring within the context of a defunct military regime to a more pluralistic, multi-party and open participatory democratic political system. Also, in focus are the ways in which the policy and regulatory changes occurred, the impact of the changes on the Ghanaian broadcasting system and its structures. The study not only examined and corroborated related policy and regulatory documents from primary and secondary sources but also garnered insights of policy-making "actors" interviewed. Finally, the study determines the policy and regulatory gaps in an attempt to provide recommendations for a new broadcasting policy and regulatory direction for the country. v Acknowledgement I first acknowledge Almighty ALLAH, the most Gracious, the most merciful and to whom I commit my life and soul and believe has empowered me to finally accomplish what seemed like a near impossibility having been suddenly struck with liver failure on my very first research information gathering trip to Ghana and later had to undergo a critical transplant surgery at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg after one and half years of hospitalization. This article blends personal storytelling with structured academic analysis to explore the evolving relationship between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the field of broadcasting. It examines AI's transformation from a technical assistant performing repetitive tasks to a creative partner that actively shapes live production. Drawing on years of professional experience, the discussion addresses both the operational benefits-such as precision, automation, and predictive response-and the emotional journey of integrating AI into the creative process. By combining human intuition with machine intelligence, AI has enabled richer storytelling, faster decision-making, and greater adaptability in dynamic production environments. The article concludes by reflecting on future possibilities for human-machine collaboration while underscoring the irreplaceable role of human creativity.

The study evaluated the programme schedules of selected AM and FM radio stations within Kaduna and Kano States to ascertain the frequency of agricultural programme disseminated by these stations. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, the study employed document analysis to extract and analyze data from the programme schedules of ten selected stations, aiming to determine the frequency of agricultural radio programme broadcast in the designated study areas; to evaluate the number of stations that feature sponsored agricultural programme among the selected stations in Kaduna and Kano States; and to identify the types and formats of agricultural programme. The results indicate that, among the sampled AM and FM stations, only five (5) stations engage in repeat broadcasts, and of the seventeen (17) programme titles, merely five exhibit recurrent broadcasts of agricultural radio programme. Furthermore, the majority of the selected stations produce one programme that is proprietary to the station, whereas numerous other titles are sponsored by external entities. The study concludes that the frequency with which radio programmes are aired is crucial for disseminating developmental messages and facilitating subsequent adoption. Agricultural messages necessitate repeated broadcasts to enhance reception rates. Consequently, the study advocates for the management of the radio stations to consider augmenting the slots allocated for all agricultural radio programme. Additionally, it is recommended that stations pursue additional sponsorship opportunities for agricultural programmes to bolster the frequency of their coverage.

The broadcast industry often finds itself caught between maintaining professional standards and adhering to government-imposed regulations. With the ongoing transformation in traditional broadcasting, it has become necessary to review existing regulatory frameworks implemented by statutory agencies and professional bodies. This paper reports on the state of broadcast media regulation and highlights the challenges of enforcement in the face of media convergence. It adopts both self-regulatory and statutory models as its analytical framework. Findings indicate that the digitisation of broadcasting has broadened media operations, resulting in increasing breaches of regulatory guidelines. A notable example is campus radio stations, which are authorised to serve their respective institutions and host communities but often operate beyond these limits. The paper concludes that regulating broadcast media in the digital age presents significant difficulties and recommends a review of existing regulatory approaches to reflect contemporary realities.

As pessoas com deficiência visual contam com um recurso de acessibilidade  denominado Audiodescrição (AD) que consiste, grosso modo, na descrição de informações que são veiculadas visualmente em um filme, programa de televisão, peça de teatro, fotografia, pintura, escultura ou o que mais envolva imagem. O debate atual sobre AD perpassa por problematizar as questões estéticas na sua realização. Para pensar sobre essas fissuras das abordagens a respeito da recepção pelas pessoas cegas, recorremos ao filme documentário Janela da Alma, dos cineastas João Jardim e Walter Carvalho, de 2001, em diálogo com autores que refletiram sobre a proeminência do olhar. Em seguida abordamos e refletimos sobre o papel da palavra, com base em Bakhtin (2003, 2006) e outros autores. Realizada deste lugar, a AD será fruto da  consciência de que somos pelo reconhecimento das nossas possibilidades e do outro, bem como pelo respeito à diversidade e às diferenças.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana portal Kompas menulis pemberitaan tentang kekerasan dan perlindungan anak di sekolah. Penelitian dilakukan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dengan teknik analisis isi (content analysis) dengan mengkaji 3 (tiga) artikel pada bulan Mei 2025. Artikel yang dikaji dalam penelitian ini hanya yang berkaitan dengan isu kekerasan terhadap anak di sekolah yang ditulis oleh portal kompas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa portal kompas menulis pemberitaan terkait dengan gaya dan jenis berita straight news sehingga informasi tidak tergali lebih dalam. Adanya penggunaan framing yang mengarahkan berpihak kepada korban dan sekolah terkesan abai dalam isu kekerasan terhadap anak. Kajian ini juga menemukan minimnya penggunaan pedoman peliputan pemberitaan anak yang diterbitkan oleh Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) sebagai panduan dalam peliputan.

This study aims to analyze the understanding and practice of data-driven journalism in Indonesia using big data analytics in media institutions such as data infrastructure availability, data structuring, data deepening, enrichment, presenting in the media, resource development, and management, and develop the model of data-driven journalism. The qualitative approach is used by in-depth interviews with 45 participants from media leaders, journalists, vloggers, and audiences. Besides, contents analyses are conducted on 48 samples of various media series along one year. The results showed that big data analytics was conducted for data-driven journalism step by step at national and local media in Indonesia. However, the knowledge and understanding of big data analytics and data-driven journalism in the newsroom and research supporters are still not adequate for both policy and technology. This article explores the challenges surrounding the Scottish media graduate landscape after the COVID-19 pandemic. Contributing factors that impact Scotland-based students and educators include a shift in the jobs market, altering pedagogies during and post-pandemic, and social drivers including fewer students choosing media pathways of study due to the cost-of-living crisis. This study draws on insights from 40 students at five Scottish universities, all of whom graduated in the summer of 2023. The research presents a window into the mindset and expectations of this post-pandemic graduating class while drawing on current and relevant literature. In addition, the paper includes reaction from industry and academic experts in Scotland and questions what can be done to address trends surrounding the stability and sustainability of journalism education. The experts include senior broadcasters, an established media educator who has worked across further education and higher education in Scotland while also being a national news editor, and one of Scotland's most experienced journalism educators who is the chair of the World Journalism Education Council. This work is predominantly qualitative, drawing on a mixed research approach of expert interviewing and surveys while providing recommendations for journalism educators.

Cuban revolution happened as modern architecture; it was through the infrastructures, the inventions and the direct contribution of modern architecture that revolutionary ideas and actions were performed, broadcasted, funded, and assembled. Modern, pre-revolutionary architecture in Havana is often described as the enactor of Baptista’s regime—evidence of his US-run economic and cultural coloniality unfolding on the island. And yes, it was. But those descriptions often fail to explain how modern architecture dashed revolution. The July 26 Movement confronted ideologically the intentions of this modernity; but the societal entanglement buildings mobilize always exceed the ideologies that motivate them in the first place. The Revolution grew through material and societal apparatuses, which buildings, infrastructures and ways-of-doing anticipated. The Revolution had an intimate relationship with Radiocentro CMQ that has never been explained. It was at Radiocentro’s studios where Castro gave his first endless speech. It was the radio station Circuito CMQ that provided the means for the Revolution to reconfigure as a media. It was through the narratives and the physical space of Radiocentro that Castro staged his confrontation to the Spanish colonial legacy. It was the Revolution as Radiocentro when it executed Fulgencio Batista.

Neste artigo objetivamos verificar a percepção de surdos e ouvintes do Centro Estadual de Capacitação de Educadores e de Atendimento às Pessoas com Surdez (CAS Natal) em relação à educação para surdos oferecida pela instituição. A perspectiva de linguagem do Círculo Bakhtiniano embasa a discussão aqui proposta, especialmente no que se refere ao cronotopo, ao compreender que as relações dialógicas acontecem em um tempo e espaço determinados. Filiamo-nos ao olhar investigativo da Linguística Aplicada, por versar sobre a linguagem como prática social. A pesquisa é de cunho qualitativo-interpretativista, sendo os dados de análise obtidos a partir da dissertação de Mestrado de Lima (2022). Como resultados, depreendemos que há uma forte ligação axiológica emocional dos participantes com a instituição, possibilitando reconhecer que as relações dialógicas efetivadas em um ambiente propulsor de aprendizagens refletem visões sobre ele e fomenta questões concernentes à educação dos surdos.

In this position paper we outline the opportunities and challenges of pure asynchronous video messaging as an everyday utility. We recruited 53 users to try Skype Qik 'in the wild' for two weeks from its launch in October 2014. We found users orienting to an organizational principle that we term 'Me For You', a self-conscious yet creative orientation that allowed users to transform features of their everyday affairs into show-about-ables that can be subject to and warrant the interrogative gaze of a Qik recipient. We found that such acts implied a reciprocity that was valuable in some special contexts, while at other times proving dissonant with assumptions about mundane communicative practices between particular parties. To warrant another's gaze requires artfulness, but in some relationships one might not want to demand that artfulness in return. Governments across the world make heavy use of television in communicating their actions to the public; and building a positive image and credibility with the aim of obtaining recognition and support. This study was anchored on Schema and Social Responsibility theories to understand how Nigeria television stations' presentations of Delta state government activities influence the residents' perception of government's image by considering the five-point agenda of the government: infrastructural development, fighting corruption, food supply, security and empowerment of the citizens. A total of 375 respondents were purposively selected from the total population of 6,863,671 residents across the three (3) senatorial districts of Delta State. Television presentation of government image in the areas of infrastructural projects and youth's employment and empowerment were positive; while fighting corruption, agricultural development and security were negative. The study suggested that local television stations are factual and objective in the coverage of Delta state government activities but that does not translate to residents' positive perception of the state government's image. The study suggests that governments can project their positive image and reputation through television but public positive perception of their image can be achieved through their transparency and accountability in managing the affairs of the people.

Este trabalho apresenta o processo de investigação da atuação de tradutores e intérpretes de Libras-Língua Portuguesa em museus e espaços culturais no Ceará no que tange apresentar algumas camadas da atuação de TILSP alocados nesses espaços e diferenciar as atuações na tradução e na interpretação. Para tanto, entendemos como relevante que os processos sejam definidos, identificados e catalogados, realizando uma análise da "[...] diferenciação entre os processos tradutórios e os interpretativos e, por sua vez, a especificidade desses processos quando realizados entre uma língua de modalidade gestual-visual e outra vocal-auditiva." RODRIGUES, SANTOS, 2018. Tivemos como objetivo catalogar as atuações que os tradutores-intérpretes realizam no contexto de um equipamento público, a Pinacoteca do Ceará, com ênfase em duas perguntas levantadas; a) Quais são as demandas de tradução e interpretação? b) Quais problemas ou dificuldades são encontrados no processo tradutório-interpretativo. A metodologia aplicada foi uma análise autobiográfica e documental a partir do processo investigativo de documentação e analítico da própria atuação do tradutor e intérprete no ambiente institucionalizado, nesse caso será um museu de arte. Nossos resultados não estão finalizados, pois a pesquisa está em andamento, mas já apresentam a diferenciação entre a atuação com tradutor e da atuação com intérprete, algumas regulamentações que são importantes para a área da tradução e interpretação no contexto artístico-cultural e indicadores relacionados às demandas do campo da tradução e interpretação em línguas de sinais. Concluímos que a relevância da pesquisas está relacionadas ao Estudos da Tradução em Línguas de Sinais-ETILS com foco em pesquisas relacionadas à tradução e interpretação no contexto artístico-cultural, entendemos também como importante uma análise mais aprofundada de trabalhos que trazem a perspectiva da atuação no contexto artístico-cultural e para o desenvolvimento de políticas de tradução para essa área de atuação. Paus yang lahir 17 Desember 1936 di Flores Buenos Aires Argentina dengan nama Jorge Mario Bergoglio wafat sehari setelah muncul di Lapangan Santo Petrus untuk mengucapkan "Selamat Paskah" kepada ribuan umat Katolik yang hadir. Kematiannya terjadi pada salah satu momen terpenting bagi para pengikut Gereja Katolik Roma, dan kurang dari 24 jam setelah Paus menyampaikan pesan terakhirnya pada Minggu Paskah, yaitu: "Aku memikirkan orang-orang di Gaza, khususnya komunitas Kristiani di sana, di mana konflik mengerikan terus menimbulkan kematian dan kehancuran," di balkon Basilika Santo Petrus, Kota Vatikan pada Minggu, 20 April 2025

Artikel ini membahas mengenai perubahan peran wartawan dari gatekeeper menjadi gatewatcher. Teori Agenda Setting Media mengatakan bahwa media massa tidak hanya memilih isu yang dianggap penting untuk dihadirkan kepada khalayak, tetapi juga isu apa yang layak dipikirkan oleh publik. Teori ini menempatkan wartawan sebagai penjaga gerbang (gatekeeper) yang leluasa menentukan isu yang layak dikonsumsi khalayak. Namun, tingginya penggunaan media sosial oleh masyarakat menggeser dominasi peran penjaga gerbang, dari wartawan kepada khalayak media sosial. Di era media sosial siapapun dapat menjadi produsen informasi dan memiliki medianya sendiri. Gatekeeper sudah dianggap tidak relevan lagi mengingat derasnya informasi yang beredar di media sosial. Kini sudah menjadi hal rutin redaksi media konvensional setiap saat memperhatikan konten-konten media sosial. Mereka tidak ingin ketinggalan tren informasi terbaru atau yang viral di masyarakat. Peran itu disebut sebagai gatewatcher.

Two monumental works have dominated studies since the last century on the relationship between media, audience, media professionalism, and the role of the state in this relationship: Four Theories of the Press published in 1956 by Siebert, Peterson, and Schramm, and its successor Comparing Media Systems published in 2004 by Hallin and Mancini prove the power of media typologies . The first work, Four Theories of the Press, provided a historical overview of the functioning of the media in political systems, as well as the role of media ownership, the political system, the role of the state, and the social responsibility of the media. These four theories of the press with a historical character were: (a) the authoritarian, which historically has been in kingdoms and dictatorships, with censorship and control by the state; (b) libertarian, present in liberal-democratic countries and which is the opposite of authoritarian theory; (c) social responsibility, mainly in democratic European countries (with a code of journalists, ethics, improvement of journalist standards) and, (d) Soviet communist theory of the press, where there are no private media, where there is censorship, and the state controls everything . Influenced by the Cold War and political theories, these theories focused more on the ownership of the media and who controls them; they focused more on the relationship between the press and the government than between the press and the audience. These theories dominated media systems studies for several decades. With the fall of the communist system in Europe and the former USSR, the typologies of the media system changed. In 2004 Hallin and Mancini in their work Comparing Media Systems, rightly predict the replacement of press theories. "It is time to give it a decent burial and move on to the development of more sophisticated models based on real comparative analysis" (p. 10). They have proposed four principal dimensions for comparing media systems: "The structure of media markets, including, particularly, the degree of development of the mass circulation press; the degree and form of political parallelism; the development of journalistic professionalism; and the degree and form of state intervention in the media system" (p. 296).

O objetivo deste estudo foi compreender como, ao encobrir-se e vestir-se toda de preto durante sua participação no Met Gala 2021, Kim Kardashian produziu sentidos que abrangeram desde o efeito de “estranhamento” fortemente manifesto nas mídias sociais até o menos repercutido valor de alteridade, desvelando quais os mecanismos aí envolvidos. Como aporte teórico-metodológico, o trabalho apoiou-se nas contribuições de Greimas, Landowski, Floch e Oliveira para examinar uma das fotografias tiradas de Kardashian na sua chegada ao Met Gala 2021, em que ela está vestida de preto da cabeça aos pés. O estudo permitiu depreender que, se os sentidos comunicados pela escolha do figurino segregaram-na ante a quebra da expectativa estabelecida para esse tipo de evento, eles também possibilitaram a manifestação da alteridade de Kim num mundo contaminado pelo coronavírus.
