History of river navigation

Yalotcha is a small village on the Congo River about 150 km downstream of Kisangani (Democratic Republic of Congo). The inscription “Ville de Yalotcha” on the bow of one of Congo’s latest wooden baleinières identifies the ship owner’s home village as the vessel’s “home port” by symbolically elevating it to the status of a ville (city). While this mimics an older onomastic pattern of naval identification inherited from the colonial past, it also inscribes the baleinière and its owner into a seemingly more global ecumene of international shipping standards.
Congo’s wooden baleinières are handcrafted technologies of necessity that have become commonplace and indispensable on Congo’s inland waterways, as a result of Zaire’s, and subsequently the DR Congo’s, decades of economic and political crisis. Today, their activity accounts for the supply of at least half of all foodstuffs consumed in the DR Congo’s riverine cities, including Africa’s second city Kinshasa.
As this article shows, baleinières not only navigate on the waterways of the Congo River and its tributaries. They also float on a grid of navigation standards and bureaucratic rules, including those of ship identification, which are inherited from the times of Belgian colonialism, and which have given rise, over time, to local practical norms of naming. On the basis of contemporary naming practices relating to Congo’s wooden baleinières, this article explores how legal standards are appropriated in a process of bureaucratic mimicry. This enables the owners and crew members of baleinières to positively engage with the state’s rules and their colonial origins, in creative rather than reluctant ways, so as to safeguard and affirm their agency and pride.

This paper argues that historians have all but ignored the study of rivers and their impact on the development of human society. Apart from a somewhat terse acknowledgment of the importance of rivers in the development of ancient civilizations, from the Huang He to the Ganges, the Nile, and the Amazon, historians have by and large limited themselves to studying individual rivers, while ignoring the potential of comparative analysis of rivers. I call for a broader engagement by historians of all aspects of rivers, including their role in transportation, fishing, agriculture, industry, recreation, and the environment, people's cultural response to rivers, and the legal regimes that have grown up around them, with special reference to the role of rivers as political boundaries.

U okvirima standardizovane etnografske muzejske delatnosti I prećutno prihvaćenih muzeoloških stavova u Etnografskom muzeju, izložbena kontekstualizacija kulturnih svedočanstava iz domena narodne culture privređivanja, tačnije, muzejskih predmeta, do sada je je u osnovi obavljana kao predočavanje kocepta hronološkog i tehnološkog napretka ili područnih specifika prirodnog okruženja: brdsko-planinski, ravničarski, rečni slivovi i drugo, a potom i svrhu ilustracije osnovnih tema iz drugih domena narodne kulture. Tokom poslednje decenije do danas, međutim, predstavljanje i tumačenje uloge i značaja kulture privređivanja krenulo je (i) drugačijim tokom. O takvom stavu rečito govore izložbeni projekti „To smo mi ‒ narodna zanimanja u Srbiji“, „S obramicom niz put“, kao i planirani pod radnim naslovom „Narodno privređivanje – druga polovina 20. veka. Razmatranja u ovom radu slede moju ličnu, profesionalnu alternaciju u svojstvu rukovaoca zbirki iz istraživačkog polja Kulture privređivanja u Etnografskom muzeju, koja je nastala kao logičan nastavak prva dva projekta, a kao svojevrstan uvod u budući. U pitanju su izložbeno nerealizovani, no konceptualno i antropološko-muzeološki razrađeni pristup i kontekstualizacija narodne kulture privređivanja (u muzejskom okruženju). Razmatranjalj su postavljena hibridno, u etnografsko-muzejskom I antropološko-muzeološkom ključu, a sa istim ciljem, da predstave svojevrsnu studiju slučaja o tome na koji način približiti nove i stare uglove i poglede na etnografsko kulturno nasleđe u istraživačkom polju Kulture privređivanja.

This paper examines Queen Marie's influence in strengthening the alliance between Yugoslavia and Romania, focusing on her role as a unifying figure in a complex geopolitical landscape shaped by post-World War I treaties and territorial realignments. The marriage symbolized more than a dynastic union; it forged a strategic alliance that addressed mutual fears of revisionist threats from neighboring states, such as Hungary and Bulgaria, while contributing to the internal consolidation of Yugoslavia and Romania.Through an analysis of Queen Marie’s legacy, this paper offers a nuanced understanding of her role in fostering peace and regional stability, shedding light on the intersection of monarchy, diplomacy, and cultural ties in the early 20th century.

Waterways in Northern Italy. Inland navigation landscape and boats, between antiquity and ethnography. The Northern Italy rivers, canals, lakes, lagoons and deltas network always favoured the development of inland navigation and the connection of cities and towns located in the Po Valley with ports on the Adriatic coast. This inland navigation system was well developed already in Roman Times. Specialised flat-bottomed boats were used in these environments, as well as rafts, dugouts, skin boats and other types of vessels. Historical sources, archaeology and ethnography aid in defining the past inland navigation landscape.

In this edition we continue to publish biographies of those important persons from the Museum's rich historiography who contributed the most to the establishment of the Museum and its initial collections. Academician Jovan Žujović holds a special place in the constellation of meritorious Serbian scientists: his great knowledge, experience, broad education and driving energy strongly influenced the foundation of the Natural History Museum. He personally participated in the creation of the Museum first collections and remained a loyal friend and advisor to the Museum until the end of his life.

The Great Kanawha Navigation system originally included ten Chanoine dams on the Kanawha River in southern West Virginia. The French system was completed in 1898 and provided for year-round water transportation for 90 miles of the Kanawha River from Boomer to Point Pleasant, on the Ohio River. The ten locks and dams were replaced with four high lift dams with German roller gates in the early 1930s. Gallipolis was built on the Ohio River and Winfield, Marmet and London were built on the Kanawha. Beginning in 1989 three of these Locks and Dams were improved by adding additional lock chambers. Land required for these improvements totaled 1854 acres and included 69 archeological sites. Twenty of these sites (29%) were determined eligible for the National Register. Fourteen sites required data recovery. Six sites including the Clover National Historic Landmark were preserved and three sites were partially preserved. The cultural components at these sites included much of the prehistory and history of the Kanawha Valley and southern West Virginia from Late Paleo Indian to A. D. 1900. Data recovery resulted in major contributions to prehistoric, historic and industrial archeology and bioanthropology. This paper discusses the data recovery results, preservation efforts and public archeology.

This study presents methodologically consistent length measurements of rivers with a total length of 40 kilometres or more in the Republic of Croatia. These measurements were performed by vectorising river channels from a topographic map at a scale of 1:25,000. Contemporary orthophoto maps were used as additional cartographic sources for verification. The approaches used to determine the starting and ending points of rivers, i.e. sources and mouths or confluences, have been explained and their spatial coordinates were listed. The results showed that in terms of total river length, the 21 rivers in this study differed from the available official data by less than 5%. Considerable differences were found for rivers where significant river engineering works had been carried out to channelize and divert flow, as well as for rivers in the Adriatic Basin where there have been methodological differences in determining the river mouth, and for large lowland rivers where changes in channel planform are common due to natural dynamics and engineering interventions. Moreover, this research revealed that the longest Croatian river, with its source, confluence, and both river banks situated entirely within the territory of Croatia, is the Karašica River, with a total length of 148 km.

El abastecimiento de madera fue un aspecto fundamental en el Reino de Valencia en los siglos medievales. La amplia planicie del litoral y la escasez de bosques cercanos llevaron por un lado a desarrollar estrategias para su aprovisionamiento y por otro a impulsar medidas para garantizarlo. En este sentido, el Júcar y su afluente el Cabriel jugaron un importantísimo papel en el tráfico de troncos procedentes de las sierras de Cuenca. Asimismo, los territorios circundantes se convirtieron en áreas primordiales dentro del proceso. En este artículo analizaremos las tácticas empleadas desde época almorávide y las circunstancias en que se desarrolló la conducción de troncos por el Júcar tras la conquista.

Wood’s supply was an essential aspect for the Kingdom of Valencia during the medieval centuries. The large plain around the coast and the forest shortage caused, firstly, the development of supplying strategies and, secondly, the creation of specifical orders in order to guarantee it. In that sense, Júcar and its tributary Cabriel played an important role in the trunks traffic coming from the mountains of Cuenca. Also, the surrounding countryside was primordial in the procedure. In this article we are going to analyse the methods in use in the Almoravid period and the circumstances of the trunks navigation on the river after the conquest.

This article aims to contextualize a hitherto  overlooked dimension of August Schoefft's journey to the Panjab, concentrating on its West Asian stretch. It seeks to demonstrate that the 1837-8 passage through Iraq by the court-painter-to-be of the Sikh maharajahs was far more than a necessary stopover: his activities suggest that he continued there the exploration of waterways suitable for steam power transport, a venture initiated on the Danube by his first patron, Count István Széchenyi.

We aim to describe the several actors and their position related to Paraná-Paraguay Hydroway's new public concession contract. We analyse the debate about Parana-Paraguay Hydroway considering the position of a strong public-private coalition, which aimed to consolidate the current model and operating condition of the Hydroway and has deployed defensives strategies for facing several demands proposed by a variety of public and private actors, who aim to modify this public policy. We based the analysis on Hydroway's Federal Council's documents. Hydroway's Federal Council is a participative instance created by the Federal Government to discuss jointly with civil society issues related to the new administration of Paraná-Paraguay Hydroway.

Electricity consumption in Indenesia has been steadily increasing at an extremely rapid rate, of aroimd 15% to 20% per y.ear, over the past 20 years. As a consequence, Indonesia's huge reserves of lower quality coal wil1 be mined to satisfy growing domestic demand in the power generation sector [1,2]. An efficient low cost coal transportation system will however be necessary before Indonesia's lower rank coal can be used to meet domestic demand. ln order to improve the existing towed barge system to transport directly coal from the river barge loading facility in Kalimantari to the power plants in Java, a pusher barge system has been proposed. ln a previous paper [3], the economic feasibility of pusher barge system for coal transportation in Indenesia has been studied and it was showed that this system is the most economical form of transportation. In this paper, the authors investigated the optimal size of the barge carge capacity for coal transportation in Indonesia. The objective is to minimize the economic cost of transport (ECI) and the problem is solved using the Excel solver. Constraints in the system include power plant demand, river restriction, ship speed and loading or unloading capacity in coal terminal. From the verification of global consistency of the proposed of the solution and its economic exploitability, result of the main dimensions of pusher and barge agree well with the olles of real pusher and barge, which are being used for domestic coal transpertation in Indonesia.

This study focuses on the issues related to the waste management in river ports in general and especially in the port of Belgrade. Data on solid waste, waste oils, oily waters, gray water and black water have been collected for a period of five years. The methodology of data collection is presented. Trends of data were analyzed and the regression model was used to predict the waste quantities in the Belgrade port. This data could be utilized as a basis for the calculation of the equipment capacity for waste selective collection, treatment and storage. The results presented in this study establish the need for an organized management system for this type of waste which can be achieved either by constructing and providing new specialized terminal or by providing mobile floating facilities and other plants in the Port of Belgrade for these kinds of services. The Velika Morava had been navigable for centuries, but for rafts and smaller vessels only. Due to poor conditions of the riverbed, the navigation by boats was not possible. Important issue for the traffic policy of the Principality of Serbia was regulation of the flow of the Velika Morava and conditioning it for the boats of larger transport capacity. It was the most important inner river trade route, which connected the inland of the
Principality of Serbia and the Danube. This question was accentuated in 1850ies and 1860ies, when the first demands by foreign shipping companies to invest in regulation of the river and river traffic were reported. By the end of 1860ies (1867 and 1869), the Serbian Government undertook measurings of the flow of the Velika Morava, with the aid of Austrian Shipping Company, in order to establish navigation along this river. The Serbian Army officer Anta Aleksić soon concieved a plan for the works to be done in order to enable navigation. It showed that cultivation of Velika Morava required large expenditures, and that works could last up to twenty years. Consequently, Anta Aleksić pointed out the importance of rafts, as means of transport on the Velika Morava, but also on both Zapadna and Južna Morava. After his efforts and raftings on these rivers, this means of transportation amassed. After the railroad was built, the river route along Velika Morava, as a connection of the inner parts of the Kingdom of Serbia with the North, loses importance. The railroad connected two ends of the Kingdom of Serbia.

The basic aspects of an innovative concept design for a vessel intended to be used on European inland waterways network are presented. The main requirements to be fulfilled concern technical matters for the vessel, and take into account all the constraints imposed both by the infrastructures present along the rivers/canals and by the normative about environmental protection. In particular, the paper deals with the definition of the framework of the problem, the analysis of suitable solutions and the possible adoption of innovative technologies nowadays available on the market. With reference to the latter issue LNG engines have been considered for both propulsion and generation, in order to low the emission of pollutants in air. Aim of this study is the definition of a framework for the actual realisation of a common school ship in the Danube region. After a brief outline of best practice examples for (inland navigation) school ships in Europe, the study goes on with the summary of the technical aspects of the Danube School Ship and description of the feasible vessel design (with and without lifting wheelhouse) which responds to the previous research analyses.

У раду је представљен нови метод за повећање сигурности пловидбе на реци на основу примера конфликтне ситуације два пловила. Наведени су неки од параметара кретања пловила у зависности од маневра пловила као што су: време за које два пловила прелазе различите раздаљине, подручје у коме постоји опасност од судара (конфликтно подручје), полупречник конфликтног подручја и брзине пловидбе два пловила. Извршено је предвиђање будућих позиција, брзина кретања и курсева два пловила на основу којих су донети закључци о сигурности пловидбе на реци. За проверу модела и прорачун коначних резултата коришћени су самоходни моторни теретњак и метални чамац са ванбродским мотором као чести актери пловидбених незгода. Извршена је анализа могућности појаве пловидбене незгоде при пресецању курсева пловидбе на реци у циљу одређивања момента благовременог предузимања маневара заповедника самоходног моторног теретњака и руковаоца металног чамца ради избегавања судара.

Conrad Martens (1801-78) is widely regarded as Australia's foremost watercolourist of the colonial period, having produced a large body of work whilst resident in New South Wales between 1835-78. His journal of a voyage from England to Australia during 1833-35 aboard HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin and HMS Hyacinth was for a long period catalogued as an `Anonymous Journal of a Voyage on board H.M.S. Hyacinth' in the collection of the Mitchell Library, Sydney (ML A429). However in 1993 it was identified as by Conrad Martens. This was a significant find as it also contained an account of Martens' time aboard His Majesty's sloop Beagle between 1833-4, forming an especially interesting addition to the archive of extant Beaglerelated material which includes the diaries, journals, letters and published accounts of individuals such as Charles Darwin and Robert FitzRoy, along with the pictorial record of Martens, Augustus Earle and other amateur artists.

Özet İnsanların suya olan gereksinimlerinden dolayı insanlığın tatlı su kaynakları etrafında yeşermiş olduğu, kültür ve medeniyetin akarsu havzalarında ortaya çıktığı görüşü belirgin bir genellemedir. Bu bağlamda akarsulara çağlar boyu büyük bir önem bazen de kutsiyet atfedilmiştir. Antikçağ yazarları da bu konuya sıkça değinmişler ve akarsuları eserlerine konu etmişlerdir. Pseudo-Plutarkhos da Nehirler Üzerine adlı eserinde ağırlıklı olarak nehirleri konu edinmiş ve nehirler hakkında okuyucuya bazı bilgiler vermeye çalışmıştır. Pseudo-Plutarkhos'un konu edindiği nehirlerden biri de Maiandros (Büyük Menderes Nehri)'tur. Antikçağda Phrygia Bölgesi'ndeki Kelainai yakınlarından kaynağını almış olan Maiandros sözü edilen bölge boyunca akmış daha sonra Lydia, Karia ve Ionia bölgelerinin arazilerini sulayarak Aigaios Pontos'a (Ege Denizi) dökülmüştür. Uzunluğu ve taşıdığı suların bolluğuyla antikçağ Asia'sının (Küçük Asya) en büyük nehri olarak görülmüş, içinden geçtiği coğrafyaları şekillendirmiş ve sağladığı imkanlarla o bölgelere hayat vermiştir. Maiandros Nehri'nin akıntısının zikzaklı olması son derece ilgi çekici olmuş, antikçağ yazarlarının nehre faklı anlamlar yüklemesine ve antikçağ insanının zihninde farklı imgelemler oluşmasına neden olmuştur. Zikzaklar çizen her nehir ya da zikzaklı olan her şey onun adıyla anılmaya başlamıştır. Nehrin akış şeklini esas alan bir bezeme motifi dahi oluşturulmuş ve nehrin adıyla özdeşleştirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada Pseudo-Plutarkhos'un sözü edilen eseri hakkında kısa bir değerlendirme yapıldıktan sonra yazarın anlatılarına istinaden, nehrin isminin kökeninden, akış rotasına, aktığı güzergahtaki yörelere sağladığı yarardan neden olduğu zararlara ve antikçağdan günümüze ulaşan etkilerine değinilmiştir.

Este trabajo analiza la estructura y regulación del transporte fluvial por la hidrovía del Paraná y la forma en que el usufructo de la concesión del servicio de dragado y balizamiento ha sido licitado, otorgado y renovado desde 1995 hasta la actualidad. El objetivo del trabajo es dual. Por un lado, se analiza si el sector del transporte naval de la Cuenca del Paraná está bien estructurado y se hace particular énfasis en las actividades de dragado y balizamiento. En este sentido, se analiza si el contrato de concesión de dragado y balizamiento de esta vía fluvial ha permitido una mayor eficiencia en el sector. También se busca verificar si dicha eficiencia se traslada a los usuarios del servicio con precios y servicios competitivos, e identificar si existen posibles mejoras a la misma. Por otro lado, se utiliza el caso de la regulación del servicio de dragado y balizamiento como estudio de caso que resalta las fortalezas y debilidades de dicha concesión (desde la licitación hasta la actualidad), como forma de resaltar las lecciones de este caso que pueden ser relevantes para licitación y concesiones en otros sectores de la economía. Abstract This paper analyzes the structure and regulation of fluvial transport by the Paraná waterway and the way in which the usufruct of the dredging and beaconing service concession has been tendered, granted and renewed from 1995 to the present. The objective of the work is dual. On the one hand, we analyze the structure of the fluvial transport sector in the Parana Basin, particularly in regards to the dredging and beaconing activities. In particular, we want to analyze if the concession contract for dredging and marking of this waterway has allowed greater efficiency in the sector. On the other hand, the case of regulation of the dredging and beaconing service is used as a case study that highlights the strengths and weaknesses of said concession (from the tender to the present), as a way to highlight the lessons of this case that can be be relevant for bidding and concessions in other sectors of the economy. Оне су уједно и природна граница данашње територије АП Војводине у Републици Србији: између Дунава и Саве се налази Срем; Дунава и Тисе -Бачка, а с друге стране Тисе, преко Бегеја и Тамиша -Банат. Ови природно богати пловни путеви су омогућили привредни, друштвени и политички развој данашње територије АП Војводине кроз историју.

Тhe paper gives a brief overview of the events that led to the sinking of a number of Allied vessels at the Iron Gate section of the Danube waters during war years 1914 and 1915. Focus is on those vessels whose remains can be still expected in the Danube bed. Those are Šumadija, a passenger ship of the Serbian Shipping Society, sunk by artillery on 18 August, 1914, near Moldova Veche, and Russian barges 815 and 816 and the trough of the Russian steamer Sineus deliberately sunk to block the Danube upstream of Kladovo, near the village of Gura Vai. The work is part of the preparation for the planned multidisciplinary field research, which will supplement the historical data with adequate information from the field with the aim of defining, valorizing and presenting the underwater cultural heritage of the First World War on the rivers of the Serbian Danube.

У раду се даје кратак осврт на догађаје који су у акваторијуму Ђердапа довели до потапања извесног броја савезничких пловила током ратних година 1914. и 1915., са фокусом на бродове чији се остаци и данас налазе у кориту Дунава. Рад је део припреме за планирана мултидисциплинарна теренска истраживања, којима ће се историјски подаци допунити информацијама о стању на терену, у циљу дефинисања, валоризације и адекватне презентације подводног културног наслеђа Првог светског рата на рекама српског Подунавља.

The fifth conference of the European Network of River Museums was held from 25-28. September 2018 at the Museum of Science and Technology - Belgrade. Colleagues from museums in Austria, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Romania and Serbia participated in the conference. The conference began with the opening of two exhibitions, specially prepared for the occasion: a panel exhibition "Historic river vessels", at which each museum, a participant of the Conference, presented through the photographs and text one vessel of importance for the history of river navigation of their country, or area which he covers with his activity, and then exhibitions "Danube in Serbia - a journey through technical museums".

Јубиларна пета конференција Европске мреже речних музеја (European network of River Museums) одржана је од 25-28. септембра 2018. године у Музеју науке и технике – Београд. На конференцији су учествовале колеге из музеја Аустрије, Мађарске, Немачке, Пољске, Румуније и Србије. Конференција је почела отварањем две изложбе, припремљене посебно за ову прилику: панел изложбе „Historic river vessels“ на којој је сваки музеј, учесник Конференције, представио кроз фотографије и текст по један пловни објекат од значаја за историју речне пловидбе своје земље, односно области коју својом делатношћу покрива, а затим изложбе „Дунав у Србији - путовање кроз техничке музеје“.
