Turkish Media

As a common expression; media, is a word that used for "communication environment" or "communication tools". When the media Notion handled with the largest meanings of it, it includes oral, written, printed and visual texts and images, it appears as a phenomenon that involve the whole information tools. In democratic regimes, the practitioners of the politics which named as art of solving the social problems, defend that the the respect to the political choices is the extract of the democracy, by a continious emphasize for the freewill Notion. By the way, establishing a relationship with the freewill Notion and true informing Notion would be pertinent. The dependence of the media and the political preferences can be observed by considering the determination of political choices and benefits from the political choices of the media which has the power of directing the crowds according to its will. Particularly, in the democratic regimes, politics appear as a phenomenon which is attributed as legal as well as the media. In that sense the interaction of these two institutions is apparent. The institutions of politics, affect the perception of events on the crowd directly or indirectly by the decides which are made, applications which are applied, expressions which are told, the language which is used. Crowds may not follow all the multidimensional process, the political news, the information bombardment of the political current by the chance of itself, it seems impossible when the complication of the daily life considered. At that point, the information carrying function of the media appears. The political area expands into the social area by the intervention of media. For this reason, the style of perceiving and the presentation the political beings, is truly important about the meaning of mass. Since it is one of the most important tools of the media, written periodics, the newspapers are very effective with their daily press. The Gezi Events which took place in May 2013, is a significant example in terms of the relationship between media and the politics. During the Gezi Events, the perception and the presentation of the events to the public are very different between different media institutions. The study is going to be based on that point. The presenting and informing style of the newspapers will be compared about their relationship between the political government. The difference between the opponent side and the defender side of the governtment will be tried to be pointed out. By stepping from that point, the manipulation power of media which resembling a perceptive operation is going to be argued. While doing this, the newspapers may have a close relationship with the government, Sabah, Star and Yeni Şafak chosen by the way the newspapers would be named as opponent as Cumhuriyet, Sözcü and Bir Gün chosen. When making evaluations, the indicator is the first page headlines of these newspapers in the thirty days after the start of events. This study is important in terms of stating the stance of the media which is said to be the fourth power over determining political preferences. In this study, the historical research methods are used by getting benefits from the old studies and researches on the other hand with the observations, the descriptive research methods will be applied. The expression analyses method of Van Dijk will be used for resolutions of the headlines of the newpapers.

In this article, I analyze two media campaigns that have defended opposite positions about the amendments on alimony legislation in Turkey. The alimony debates reveal ongoing struggles not just to redefine the meanings of feminism and women’s rights in Turkey but also to redefine the role of the welfare state in alleviating poverty. One of the campaigns is run by leading feminists, and the other is run by profamily groups who claim that they are the victims of the existing alimony legislation. I focus on the intersections of gender and class and suggest that Turkey’s feminists might need new and subversive alliances in the current political moment characterized by the right-wing hegemony of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP). Reaching out to lower-class men and campaigning for gender equality by focusing not only on “women” as an identity category but also on poverty as a major source of oppression might enhance feminists’ chance to expand their base and push back on the conservative gender policies propagated by the AKP government.

This dissertation examines how the political message of the single-party regime in Turkey spread throughout the provinces between 1930 and 1945, in a post-imperial context shaped by the aftermath of the First World War and the eradication of non-Muslim and non-Turkish populations from Asia Minor. It contributes to the history of the Republican People’s Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Fırkası), which ruled from 1923 to 1950 without true power sharing, by focusing on its provincial organization, specifically the Organization of People’s Preachers (Halk Hatipleri Teşkilâtı), established in September 1931. It explores the political and social conditions of the interwar period, investigating why the party invested in the political education of adults during a time marked by economic challenges and the Great Depression.
Analyzing the pedagogical project from 1931 onwards highlights key concepts and social categories such as “münevver” (enlightened) and “halk” (people). It shows how the “enlightened” took the stage, addressed crowds, and educated the rest of the population on behalf of the party and the republic it established. By examining the social trajectories and political careers of the People’s Preachers, this research contributes to the socio-history of political elites in the twentieth century within a post-imperial context.
This dissertation’s double analytical movement explores the political communication apparatus established by the Republican People’s Party to gain popular support and the education system focused on political education by the People’s Preachers. It reveals the interconnection between knowledge transmission, incorporating a gendered social ideal, and maintaining order. The research traces the genealogy of the “provincial intellectual” (taşra münevveri) in Turkey, examining the political and social transformations that contributed to its formation. It demonstrates how Turkish provincial intellectuals differed from their European counterparts by their social origins and political functions, such as law enforcement and intimidating dissidents. The research also offers an alternative reading of the history of single-party Turkey, linking its post-imperial nature with its post-genocidal dimension through the social trajectories and activities of the People’s Preachers in the context of demographic and social transformations in Anatolia.

Историческое наследие Второй мировой войны остается одной из ключевых тем в формировании коллективной памяти мирового сообщества. Этот процесс охватывает не только военные и дипломатические аспекты, но и включает в себя интерпретации,
трансформируемые в зависимости от идеологических, политических и международных факторов. В контексте Турции современные академические исследования и медийные дискурсы, посвященные роли Советского Союза во Второй мировой войне, демонстрируют широкий спектр подходов – от попыток объективного анализа до нарративов, отражающих определенные идеологические позиции. Такая многосторонняя структура, с одной стороны, способствует более разнообразному истолкованию исторических событий
по сравнению с зачастую односторонними ревизионистскими тенденциями, характерными для западного пространства, а с другой, свидетельствует о тесной связи исторической памяти с доминирующим политическим контекстом. Настоящий доклад направлен на анализ того, как вклад Красной армии и народов Советского Союза в победу во Второй мировой войне представлен в современной турецкой научной литературе и средствах массовой информации.
The historical legacy of World War II remains one of the key themes in the formation of the collective memory of the world community. This process covers not only military and diplomatic aspects, but also includes interpretations that are transformed depending on ideological, political and international factors. In the context of Turkey, contemporary academic research and media discourses on the role of the Soviet Union in World War II demonstrate a wide range of approaches – from attempts at objective analysis to narratives reflecting certain ideological positions. Such a multifaceted structure, on the one hand, contributes to a more diverse interpretation of historical events compared to the often one-sided revisionist tendencies characteristic of the Western space, and on the other hand, testifies to the close connection of historical memory with the dominant political context. This paper aims to analyze how the contribution of the Red Army and the peoples of the Soviet Union to the victory in World War II is presented in contemporary Turkish academic literature and media.

Bu çalışma, Türk toplumunda yabancılara yönelik sosyolojik bakışı incelemektedir. Özellikle 2011 Suriye iç savaşı sonrasında Türkiye’nin yoğun göç almasıyla birlikte yabancıların toplumda nasıl sınıflandırıldığı, önyargılara ve ötekileştirmeye maruz kaldığı ele alınmaktadır. Araştırmada gönüllü ve zorunlu göç ayrımı üzerinden yabancıların yaşadığı sorunlar, ekonomik ve sosyal etkiler ile toplumsal algılar tartışılmıştır. Bulgular, Suriyeliler ve Orta Doğu’dan gelen göçmenlerin çoğunlukla olumsuz kalıplarla etiketlenirken, Avrupalı göçmenlerin idealize edildiğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca artan işsizlik ve yaşam maliyetleri, yabancı düşmanlığını pekiştiren faktörler olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Çalışma, mültecilerin eğitim hakkına erişimindeki çelişkileri vurgulamakta ve kapsayıcı, insan hakları temelli politikaların toplumsal uyum için önemini ortaya koymaktadır.

This chapter explores the gender negotiations of Dersimi women in social and political life to shed light on the complex interplay of family, gender, and activism in both local and transnational spaces. Taking multiple factors into consideration, including religion, ethnicity, and history, it aims to understand how women navigate and negotiate their gender roles in family and community spaces; how these practices are transmitted and reproduced; and how gender norms are formed in contested regions where constant state violence shapes the cultural and political spheres, including alternative spaces of rights, claims, and performances of citizenship. Drawing on interviews with Dersimi women in Dersim, Istanbul, and London, the chapter deals with the diverse dynamics that shape the construction and transmission of gender perceptions and practices among Alevi Kurds. The narratives of women consistently reveal an ongoing struggle against patriarchal norms and gender inequalities within familial, social, and political spheres. However, their involvement in various forms of activism, which creates a new social context for women, catalyzes transformative change, forcing more equitable and inclusive relationships both inside and outside the family.

In this study, the approaches to agricultural journalism of national newspapers in Türkiye were examined in the context of food safety. The sample of the study consists of four national newspapers with different publication policies (Cumhuriyet, Sözcü, Milliyet, and Sabah). In the study, agricultural news articles published between April and October 2024 were examined using the content analysis method. The study revealed that the ideological approaches of the newspapers created significant differences in the presentation of agricultural news. While negative news headlines and a problem-oriented journalism approach are dominant in opposition newspapers, positive news headlines and a solution-oriented approach are prominent in the mainstream media. The most frequent news sources are from state institutions, and news related to non-governmental organizations and farmer organizations are more frequently covered in opposition newspapers. While agricultural policies stand out as the most covered theme, sustainable agriculture and food safety issues are not sufficiently addressed. As conclusions of this study, employment of expert reporters should be increased, regular training should be provided to journalists, news sources should be diversified, and agricultural communication should be addressed within the framework of a national strategy in order to increase the quality of agricultural journalism.

News coverage of violence against women frequently employs patriarchal discourse that implicitly justifies male perpe trators, especially in cases involving known relationships. Violence against women is also legitimized by focusing on victim blaming notions, such as women's attire and behaviors. This study examines whether patriarchal discourse persists in Turkish news coverage even when victim and perpetrator have no prior connection and discriminatory justifications based on women's attire are irrelevant. Additionally, recognizing the significant role of framing in news stories in shaping public discourse, this study explores framing strategies adopted by Turkish newspapers in reporting femicide and investigates whether these frames differ according to newspapers' ideological orientations. Integrating van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis and Iyengar's framing approach, this study analyzes news stories from 12 national newspapers regarding the murder of Başak Cengiz by an unfamiliar male perpetrator. Findings reveal that patriarchal language consistently, legitimizing male violence irrespective of the relationship between the parties. In the absence of traditional victim blaming narratives, the press constructed alternative myth centered on perceived female vulnerability. Furthermore, the analyzed newspapers predominantly utilized episodic framing with thematic framing primarily observed in left leaning newspapers. Some right wing newspapers chose not to report on the femicide unless they have political relevance. Öz Kadın cinayetleri haberlerinde kadın ile erkek arasında tanıdıklık bağı olduğunda erkeği haklılaştıran ve masumlaştıran söylemlerin baskınlığı dikkati çekmektedir. Aynı zamanda, kıyafeti gibi kadına yönelik suçlayıcı yaklaşımın olduğu da görülmektedir. Bu araştırmada, taraflar arasında tanıdıklık bağı olmadığında ve kadının görünümü gibi meşrulaştırma araçları olmadığında haberlerde ataerkil söylemin devam edip etmediğinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Ayrıca, haberlerin çerçevelenme şekli olayların kamuoyu tarafından nasıl algılanacağını etkilemektedir. Araştırma, bu konudaki haberlerin hangi çerçevede ele alındığının ve çerçevelemenin gazetelerin ideolojik duruşuna göre değişip değişmediğinin incelenmesi de amaçlanmıştır. Bu noktada, Başak Cengiz'in tanımadığı bir erkek tarafından öldürülmesine dair 12 ulusal basındaki haberler, Van Dijk'in söylem analizi ve İyengar'ın haber çerçeveleme yaklaşımıyla incelenmiştir. Araştırmada, kadın cinayeti haberlerinde medyanın erkeği masumlaştıran ve meşrulaştıran dilinin kurban ile saldırgan arasında tanışıklık olmadığında da değişmediği ve kadının dış görünüşüne dair ayrımcı söylemler inşa edilemediğinde, bu kez 'kadının zayıflığı' mitinin devreye girdiği tespit edilmiştir. Türk basınının, kadın cinayetinde epizodik habercilik yürüttüğü, tematik haberciliği daha çok sol eğilimli gazetelerin sergilediği, bazı sağ/muhafazakâr eğilimli gazetelerde kadın cinayetinin siyasetin konusu olmadıkça yer dahi bulmadığı görülmüştür.

This study explores the transformative impact of digitalisation on sports journalism, with a specific focus on Turkish media. Historically, sports journalism evolved through traditional platforms such as newspapers, radio, and television, each shaping how sports were consumed and perceived. The advent of digital platforms has revolutionized this landscape, offering interactive and audience-centered experiences while challenging conventional norms and ethics. In Türkiye, digital platforms like YouTube and social media have become essential outlets for sports content, integrating real-time updates, fan-driven narratives, and personalized consumption. Text mining and content analysis were employed to examine the practices of prominent Turkish sports journalists and their interactions with audiences. The findings reveal that digitalisation has enhanced accessibility and engagement but also has amplified issues such as sensationalism, misinformation, and a narrow focus on football. The study highlights the hybrid nature of Turkish sports journalism, where traditional practices coexist with digital innovations. While digitalisation presents opportunities for inclusiveness and innovation, it also necessitates addressing persistent ethical and structural challenges. This research contributes to understanding the evolving dynamics of sports journalism in the digital age, emphasizing the need for a balance between technological advancements and professional integrity.

The roles of the concepts of "bride" and "groom" of marriage, which make up the basic building block and enable society to exist, are changing day by day through popular culture and media in a globalizing and digitalizing world. The media, which is communicated with the mass media, realizes this with images and symbols and directs the meaning, duties and perception of these two concepts. Television, which is the most important of these tools, has become an indispensable part of our daily life since its invention and is still classified as a tool that still maintains its importance in the changing, developing and innovative media field. This tool changes the perception of the "bride" in the society in the direction of "skilled bride, competent bride", and imposes the opinion that social status will be achieved by owning expensive luxury products by emphasizing the external appearance, through "daytime TV women's programs". These programs, in which the practices of conspicuous consumption, which are a part of popular culture, are exhibited, target female audiences of domestic women, who spend most of their time at home, and by creating program contents that have been planned before, they have also affected the way of application of traditional customs and traditions. Bride candidates competing in the "Gelin Evi (Bridal House)" program, which was broadcast between 2015 and 2019 and decided to continue broadcasting again in 2022, created a competitive environment among them, also creating a competitive environment for their homes, their own bridal dowry, clothing, jewelry, food items and arrangements, wedding, and miscellaneous items. It is a program that selects the most assertive bride by scoring the ceremonies and the bridal belongings mentioned in the previous sentence within the scope of the competition. From this point of view, the aim of this study was to reveal the map of this program on the society within the framework of conspicuous consumption policies, and in-depth structured interviews were conducted with 20 women who were the audience of the program. At this point, it has been understood that the program on 20 women included in the research has changed the perception of the bride and created individuals who argue that the bride, who has flashy and exaggerated luxury consumption products, is one step ahead.

1980's represent the years when the press turned into the media and the structure of property changed via horizontal, vertical and cross monopolizations. This transformation which was observed in global scale took place in Turkey as well where neoliberal economy politics were put into practice. Consequently, the press, as a sector controlled by the bosses whose occupation was journalism till 1980's, entered a transformation process to be controlled by the non-media capital groups whose occupations were not journalism, after 1980's. Thereafter, the newspaper owners not only started to take control of the printing and distribution process but they also headed for other sectors such as radio, magazine, television and internet. On another hand, the media which became a field of investment for non-media capital groups due to deregulation and privatization policies, started to conduct business within a commercial body for which profit maximization was of importance. These developments brought integration of the press with the economic and political platform and thereby questioning of its traditional functions. This structural transformation in the media has been observed in the local and regional media organizations as much as in the widespread media organizations. However, the local and regional media which has generally been analysed in the academic studies, through its contributions on the formation of local public opinion or on the development of the local democracy process, has been evaluated independent from property relations. Haber Media Group in Samsun is an important example which represents the transformation of property relations in the media in the local scale. In this study, Haber Media Group is analysed in the sense of critical economy politics approach by using indepth interview technique.

Batı Avrupa'da gazeteciliğin başlangıç ve gelişim seyrinden farklı olarak, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu döneminde basın, Batılılaşma ve modernleşme çabaları ile bağlantılı bir biçimde devletin denetimi ve kontrolü altında ortaya çıkmıştır. Cumhuriyet'in ilanı ile birlikte, modern ulus devletin inşasında siyasal aktörler tarafından yeni toplumsal ve kültürel yapının halka benimsettirilmesinde işlevsel bir araç olarak öne çıkan gazeteler, 1950'lerden itibaren Türkiye'nin geçirdiği sanayileşme sürecine koşut olarak devletin denetiminden görece özerkleşmiş ve gazeteci aileler tarafından işletilen birer kurumsal yapı haline gelmiştir. 1970'lerin sonu ve 1980'li yıllarda ise uygulamaya konulan neoliberal politikalarla bir endüstri haline gelen basın alanı içinde gazeteler, biçim ve içerik olarak dönüşürken, gazetecilik faaliyetinin kendisi de bir değişim sürecine girmiştir. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye'de basın alanında 1980'li yıllarda yaşanan dönüşümün, Türk sinemasında gazeteci temsillerini içeren filmler üzerinden nasıl yansıdığının analiz edilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu kapsamda, 1960-1990 yılları arasında, gazeteci ve gazetecilik faaliyetlerinin konu edildiği Kral Arkadaşım (1964), Canavar Cafer (1975), Gazeteci (1979), Talihli Amele (1980), Skandal (1987) ve Gazeteci Kız (1988) filmleri örneklem olarak seçilmiştir. Belirlenen söz konusu 6 filmde öne çıkan temsiller, nitel içerik analizinden yararlanılarak tematik olarak başlıklandırılmıştır. 1980 öncesi ve sonrası filmlerde öne çıkan temsiller dikkate alındığında, gazetecilik faaliyetinin önemli bir dönüşüme uğradığı görülmektedir. Haber üretim pratikleri ve mesleki etik kodlarda belirgin ayrımların ortaya çıktığı filmlerde, 1980'lere kadar hâkim olan idealist gazeteci, yerini köşeyi dönen gazeteciye bırakmıştır.

This article analyzes Turkish media history through the framework of Ibn Khaldûn’s cyclical theory of history, focusing on the recurrent oscillation between media liberalization and repression under shifting political regimes. The study addresses the central question: How has press freedom in Türkiye been shaped by cyclical dynamics of consent, control, and coercion in relation to political power? Using a historical-comparative and interpretive methodology, the research systematically investigates three critical periods—the Armistice era (1918–1923), the Democrat Party era (1950–1960), and the aftermath of the 1971 military memorandum. Both primary sources (such as period newspapers and legislative texts) and secondary sources (scholarly works) are analyzed thematically to identify the underlying mechanisms and recurring patterns in the expansion and contraction of press freedoms. The findings demonstrate that each political regime, regardless of ideology, initially tolerates or promotes pluralism in the media to generate public consent and strengthen legitimacy. As power becomes consolidated, mechanisms of control—including legal constraints, economic patronage, and administrative pressure—begin to restrict journalistic autonomy. In the face of growing dissent or perceived threats, regimes ultimately turn to overt coercion, such as censorship, legal prosecution, or direct violence against journalists. This cyclical pattern—consent production, control, and coercion—repeats throughout Turkish media history and is interpreted through the Khaldûnian lens of dynastic cycles. By proposing and applying the media cycle model, the article presents an original analytical framework that links historical theory with the political economy of communication, concluding that press freedom in Türkiye remains contingent and vulnerable, shaped by recurring cycles that continue in the digital era.

The omnipresent media messages have positive and negative effects on the perceptions citizens have on the world and on the social integration of others. That is why it is necessary to educate to the media consumption, so that citizens can benefit from the positive effects avoiding the negative ones. Being literate implies to be trained to be a critical consumer and a reflexive producer of media messages. Citizens that do not develop those competencies are at risk of becoming info-excluded and progressively socio-excluded. Media Education is therefore essential to Citizenship Education. This paper presents a research conducted with pupils, aged from 11 to 16, that aimed to contribute to the development of competencies at reception and production level of media messages for school newspapers. It also presents the project of Media Literacy/Citizenship Education to be developed in Castelo Branco region, Portugal, from 2007 till 2010.

This study explores the content, causes and results of Orientalization practices in mainstream Turkish foreign reporting. The analysis is made of the “World” pages of the two national newspapers (Hürriyet and Habertürk), which can be considered the mainstream Turkish media. Limiting the analysis to the field of journalism, news articles published between May 5 - June 5, 2010 are analyzed. Orientalism theories and the cultural strategies of media provide the basis of analysis employed in this study. Foreign coverage in the given articles provides the samples of Orientalization discourse and practices in mainstream Turkish media. This study suggests that Orientalist perspectives are quite common in ‘foreign coverage’ in the Turkish media. Foreign news reports clearly exhibit the Orientalization ‘reflex’, which is one of the most visible legacies of Orientalist cultural strategies.

The return of street politics in Turkey indicates that the discontent of the youth is not limited to a wish for a more bourgeois-democratic political model; rather, their militant, large-scale participation objectively expresses their alienation from the existing social order, and their yearning for a more just and egalitarian model of social and economic development. It remains to be seen how far the conscious, organized political forces, who have a coherent vision of an alternative social and economic order, can introduce and consolidate this element in the current protest movement. That would involve not only mobilizing the students but the broad laboring sections as well.

This essay examines the deeply embedded layers of violence in contemporary Turkish society through an investigation of slow cinema aesthetics, haptic visuality and vital materialism in the films of Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

Kaurismäki's cinema greets its audience with a stillness reminiscent of Finland's cold and immobile landscapes. His characters speak little, their faces rarely show overt emotion, and the settings appear stuck in a faded temporal layer of the past. Yet, beneath this minimal, cold, and nostalgic atmosphere lies a dormant sense of hope and solidarity, ready to sprout at any moment. While some critics label his films as "cold," they actually contain a persistent reminder of a warm human connection and a longing for coexistence. Particularly when exploring themes like migration, exclusion, poverty, and unemployment, Kaurismäki masterfully uses subtle humor, resistance, and defiance to transform his cinema into a call for solidarity born from real life.

The paper examines how the issues mentioned subtly in the Winter Sleep(2014), directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, are conveyed through the film's formal elements such as cinematography, mise-en scene and the like. It surveys how these techniques contribute to the understanding of the themes, main ideas of the movie. Finally, after making an analysis of all these elements, the paper makes some inferences upon the film and offers some conclusions about the it.

Avrupa'da 18. ve 19. yüzyıllardaki yeni buluşların etkisi ve buhar gücüyle çalışan makinelerin üretimde kullanılması Avrupa'daki sermaye birikimini artırmış ve bu süreç de Sanayi Devrimi olarak adlandırılmıştır. Sanayi Devrimi ilk olarak İngiltere'de başlamış ve zamanla Avrupa'nın batı kesimlerine yayılmıştır. Avrupalı bazı devletler, Sanayi Devrimi ile ortaya çıkan hammadde ihtiyacını karşılamak için arayışlara girmişlerdir ve bu şekilde Afrika Kıtasındaki sömürge faaliyetlerine başlamışlardır. Yaklaşık bir asır kadar süren bu sömürü faaliyetleri sonunda Afrika'nın bütün zenginlikleri gemilerle Avrupa'ya taşınmış ve üretimde artış sağlanmıştır. Bu artış sonucu Avrupa devletleri zenginleşmeye başlamış, öte yandan Afrika ulusları giderek daha da fakirleşmiştir. Bu fakirliğin sonucunda Afrika'dan Avrupa'ya göç faaliyetleri başlamıştır. Günümüzde deniz yolu ile yapılan bu göç faaliyetleri sonucu binlerce insan, Akdeniz'de alabora olan deniz taşıtları yüzünden hayatını kaybetmektedir. Bu çalışmada, Akdeniz'de meydana gelen bu göç felaketlerinin, Avrupa'daki ülkelerin internet gazetelerinde nasıl ele alındığını incelenmiştir. Bu incelemeyi yapmak için 2015 ile 2018 yılları arasında Afrika'dan Avrupa'ya yasa dışı göç faaliyetleri sırasında Akdeniz'de hayatını kaybeden mülteciler hakkında Avrupa ülkelerindeki (İtalya, İspanya, Almanya, İngiltere) internet haber sitelerinin yaptıkları haberler üzerinden eleştirel söylem analizi yapılmıştır.

Abstract:

Türkiye’s Press Freedom Under Siege provides a comprehensive and evidence-based examination of the growing threats to media freedom in Türkiye. The report details systemic legal, economic, and institutional pressures that hinder independent journalism. It documents the widespread use of vaguely worded laws—such as terrorism, defamation, and disinformation statutes—to prosecute and intimidate journalists. The report also highlights how regulatory bodies like RTÜK and BİK are used to financially penalize critical media, and how media ownership is increasingly concentrated in pro-government conglomerates, stifling pluralism. New legislation such as the expanded powers of the State Supervisory Council and the proposed “Foreign Influence” law further tighten state control over civil society and media. Despite widespread arrests, censorship, and a climate of fear, the report concludes with calls for urgent legal reform, international advocacy, and solidarity among journalists and civil society to defend press freedom in Türkiye.

Turkish media has been showing illiberal symptoms of an increasingly competitive-authoritarian Turkish government intensified especially post-2016 failed coup attempt.1 As various scholars pointed out, media instrumentalization, erosion of news values and mediatization of politics created a journalistic vacuum. Turkey now has a new media system, one that is captured and with a restructured superstructure by the governing Justice and Development Party (A.K.P.).

News media control has evolved from basic control at the publication/editorial level to overall blocking and filtering of all information in 21st century Turkey. The last twenty years of the Turkish Republic has witnessed media control of dictatorial proportions. The intimidation tactics against media reporters and owners range from media capture to imprisonment. Hate speech is built and spread in Turkish media along the lines of a culture war of us versus them, creating and promoting actors of oppression and their victims. Hate speech deployed by journalists targets opposition party members, protesters of environmental and workers' rights movements, students, and workers looking for their rights. The institutional system of intimidation can operate through top to bottom political coordination at the highest level (CIMER [Cumhurbaşkanlığı İletişim Merkezi], Presidents Communication Office), or at an arms-length through an NGO (The Pelican Group), and even more discreetly through individual trolls on the government payroll. The political/informal networks of attack include MPs from the ruling Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP), who are actively supporting these intimidation tactics. This paper will analyze the historical tactics of media oppression, focusing on the last twenty years of AKP rule, and propose alternatives for the second century of Turkish Republic for a free and democratic media system. This article examines the collective memory of the Turkish diaspora in Germany, focusing on its historical roots, sociocultural implications, and the role of transnational narratives in shaping identities. Drawing on primary and secondary sources, we highlight the complexities of memory construction within the diaspora and its implications for integration and identity formation in Germany.

In the contemporary digital landscape, clickbait strategies may drive engagement, but they can also erode the credibility of both content and media organisations. This study adopted a quantitative research methodology to examine the use of clickbait headline strategies and identify recurring patterns among online journalists. The content analysis focused on news headlines, revealing three predominant types employed by mStar on TikTok, namely celebrity-focused, intriguing, and emotive headlines. Among these, celebritydriven headlines are most prevalent, followed by intriguing and emotive ones. While sensational or emotionally charged headlines are effective in increasing audience engagement on TikTok, they pose a challenge to journalistic integrity. Content creators must strike a careful balance between attracting readers and maintaining credibility in the fiercely competitive digital media space. To navigate this, it is crucial to evaluate how audiences perceive the influence of clickbait on the credibility and trustworthiness of journalism in the digital age.

“öteki” olarak konumlanmaktadır. Çoğu zaman toplumda yaşanan çeşitli sorunların sebebi olarak görülmektedirler. Bauman’ın
ifadesi ile göçmenler çok kolay hedef oldukları için genellikle günah keçisi ilan edilmektedirler (Giddens, 2013: 538-539). Ötekilik
kavramı, ulus-devletleşme serüveniyle birlikte düşünüldüğünde
ulusallaşma kavramı, ötekileri gözden düşürmek için iyi bir araç
olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır (Habermas, 2019: 19). Bu perspektiften yola çıkarak çalışmada da göç edenlerin yaşadıklarını ve göç
edenlere “öteki” olarak nasıl bakıldığını çarpıcı bir pencereden anlatması nedeni ile “Daha” filmi betimsel analiz yöntemi ile incelenmiştir. İnceleme kısmına dayanak oluşturması amacı ile öncelikli olarak “Göç ve Öteki” kavramlarına değinmekte yarar vardır

The purpose of this study is to analyze how millennial college students perceive and interpret the news-related content that is posted on the social networking website Facebook. The news that this study is focused on is related to major events in American politics, especially this past Presidential election. One research question was developed to compete this study: what influence are news stories being shared on Facebook having on millennials? In order to determine the answer to this question, focus groups with college students at Bryant University were held in which the students were asked to evaluate a news article and give their thoughts and opinions on current American events and how they are portrayed on social media.

Kitle iletişim araçlarının haber ve yorumlarında kullandığı metinler, makul çoğunluğun toplumsal düzenini meşrulaştıran propaganda metinlerine ve kendinden olmayana yönelik nefret içerikli söylem biçimine dönüşmektedir. Kamuoyunu bilgilendirme amacı taşıyan kitle iletişim araçları, toplumsal anlamda düşünüş biçimlerini hâkim ideolojinin düşünce biçimlerine göre şekillendirmektedir. Medya böylece toplumsal yönlendirmeyi ve denetimi sağlamada yardımcı bir rol üstlenmektedir. Yani medya kamuoyunun sesi olmaktan ziyade, hâkim iktidarın ve ideolojisinin sesi olma amacını yüklenir. Egemen sınıf, toplumsal denetimi sağlamak için çeşitli ideolojik aygıtlar kullanır. Bu aygıtlardan günümüzde en önemli olanı medyadır. Medya; gerek dilsel anlamda kullandığı nefret içerikli söylem biçimiyle, gerekse de haber içeriklerindeki güçlünün yanında taraf tutan konumu nedeniyle toplumu yönlendirmede önemli bir rol üstlenmektedir. Medyatik iktidar, haber içeriklerini ve haberin ideolojik ve anlamsal bağlamlarını güçlülerin tanımlarına göre kurarken, azınlıkların veya muhalif grupların dışlanmasına neden olan bir tür toplumsal denetim biçimini de söylemsel düzlemde yeniden yapılandırmaktadır. Makale kapsamında Suriyeli sığınmacıların yaşam biçimlerine, kültürel değerlerine karşı beslenen önyargının nedenleri, nefret söyleminin yarattığı tahribat irdelenecektir. Türkiye'nin yedi coğrafi bölgesinden farklı ideolojilerde on dört adet yerel gazete incelenerek, toplumsal algının önyargılarla manipüle edilme süreci değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Yerel medyada Suriyelilere yönelik kullanılan dilin, biçim ve içeriğinin hangi yapısal ideolojik süzgeçlerden geçerek bir toplumsal algı yarattığı açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Toplumsal anlamda herkese eşit mesafede olması gereken medyanın, içselleştirilmiş önyargılarla beraber sığınmacıları potansiyel suçlu olarak gösterdiği açıkça görülmüştür. Yerel medya kanallarında nefret söyleminin, hâkim unsurların, güçlülerin güçsüz üzerindeki egemenliğinin, ırkçılığının, ötekileştirmesinin yeniden üretiminde rol oynadığı anlaşılmıştır. Önyargıların ve ayrımcı söylemin oluşumu ve nefret suçuna dönüşmesinde yerel medya kanallarının ne denli etkili olduğu, çeşitli illerde Suriyeli sığınmacılara yönelen linç girişimlerinde de açıkça ortaya çıkmıştır.

Söylem analizi, yazımlanış konumda olan ve karmaşık yapılar içerisinde yer alan söylemleri dil bilgisel özellikler ile inceleyen nitel ve kuramsal bir yöntemdir. Bu yöntem, anlama dayalı sonuçların ortaya konmasını amaçlar ve söylemlerin üretilmesine ve sürekliliğinin sağlanmasına olanak tanıyan kuralları, yapıları ve durumları inceler. Bu çalışma, Teun Van Dijk’tan ilhamla, İngiliz profesör Norman Fairclough'un üç boyutlu modeli kullanılarak, metin, söylem uygulamaları ve sosyokültürel bağlam çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir.
27 Kasım 2024 tarihinde Bosna Hersek’in başkenti Saraybosna’da gerçekleşen ve 2-2’lik beraberlikle sonuçlanan FK Sarajevo U19 – Trabzonspor U19 maçında Bosnalı Holiganlar tarafından Trabzonsporlu taraftarlara yönelik gerçekleştirlen bir saldırı olayının, farklı medya kaynakları tarafından nasıl sunulduğunu incelemek için üç haberin söylem analizi yapılmasını amaçlamaktadır. T24 , Crna Hronika (Bosna-Hersek yayını)  ve OdaTV  tarafından yayınlanan haberler, olayın medyada nasıl çerçevelendiği ve okuyucu algısını şekillendirme potansiyeli bakımından değerlendirilecektir.

فلسطین بهدلیل اشغال توسط اسرائیل و مبارزه برای استقالل همیشه یکی از مسائل مورد توجه جغرافیای
مسلمانان بوده است. سالهای 1993 تا 2000 در تاریخ طوالنی مبارزه مردم فلسطین با اسرائیل، بهعنوان
روند صلح نامگذاری شده است. در این بازده زمانی به دلیل ندانمکاری دولت اسرائیل انتفاضه دوم شکل
گرفت. ترکیه نیز مانند سایر دیگر کشورها، تحوالت خاورمیانه را از نزدیک دنبال می کند، همچنین از
تالش برای پیشبرد روند مذاکرات صلح دریغ نورزید و از طریق رسانهها اخبار مربوط به فلسطینیان را
همانند انتفاضه اول در جریان انتفاضه دوم نیز تحت پوشش خبری قرار داد. رسانهها بهعنوان رابط
سیاستمداران با مردم، نقش بسیاری در القای ایدئولوژی خود به مخاطب دارند. در این بین، بهرغم ادعای
بیطرفی مطبوعات ، به دلیل وابستگی به یک ایدئولوژی، شاهد خط مشی خاص آنها در تولید خبر هستیم.
در این پژوهش با استفاده از روش تحلیل انتقادی گفتمان سرمقالههای سه روزنامه »حریت»، »جمهوریت»
و »ینیشفق» درباره انتفاضه دوم مورد آنالیز قرار گرفته است. تحلیل گفتمان مطالب رسانههای مذکور
نشان از رویکرد درونساختاری درباره انتفاضه دوم در حریت، جمهوریت و ینیشفق و دیدگاه
برونساختاری درباره اسراییل و فلسطین است. در بررسی روزنامههای نامبرده پیرامون انتفاضه دوم شاهد
رویکردهای متفاوت آنها در حمایت از طرفین درگیر هستیم.

1923'ten 2023'e Türkiye'de yayımlanan mizah yayınları hakkında karşılaştırmalı bir içeriğe sahip bu çalışmada öncelikle cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarına (1923-45), çok partili geçiş dönemine (1945-50) ve Demokrat Parti Dönemi'ne (1950-60) damga vuran dergiler ele alınmıştır. Karagöz, Zümrüdüanka, Yeni Köroğlu, Akbaba, Şaka, Markopaşa, Aydede, Dolmuş, Taş ve Karikatür bu kapsamda ele alınan başlıca dergilerdir.  1970'li yıllardan itibaren ise Türkiye'deki mizah yayıncılığına damgasını vuran Gırgır dergisi olmuştur. Oğuz Aral'ın bu dergide temellerini attığı mizah anlayışı ve yetiştirdiği karikatürcüler ise sonraki yıllarda çıkardıkları dergilerde Gırgır ekolünü sürdürmüştür. 1990'lı yılların başlarında mizah dergilerinin sayısı artarken bu dergiler hem birbirleriyle hem de özel televizyonlarla rekabete girmek zorunda kalmıştır. Bu rekabetten güçlü şekilde çıkan tek dergi Leman olmuş ve mizah yayıncılığının yeni rotasını belirlemiştir. 2000'li yıllarda yine mizah dergilerinin sayıları artarken çocuklara, kadınlara yönelik mizah dergilerinin yanı sıra İslamcı kesimlerin sesi olma iddiasındaki dergiler de yayımlanmıştır. Cumhuriyetin 100 yılına girilirken yeni bilişim ve iletişim gelişmeleri karşısında mizah yayıncılığının nasıl bir seyir izleyeceği ise belirsizliğini korumaktadır.

Irkçı Değilim Ama…Yazılı Basında Irkçı Ayrımcı Söylemler” İnsan Hakları Ortak Platformu adına 2009-2010 yıllarında yürütülen ve ulusal ve yerel yazılı basında ırkçı-ayrımcı söylemlerin dolaşıma girme, yaygınlaştırılma, yeniden üretilme ve meşrulaştırılma biçimlerine odaklanan bir araştırmanın sonuçlarını ortaya koymakta. Ayrımcılığı-ırkçılığı meşrulaştıran ve kuşatan ideolojik çerçevenin kurulmasında, toplumdaki çoğunluğun üyelerinin doğrudan çok az bilgi sahibi olduğu gruplar ve olaylar hakkında kamusal bilgi yayan medyanın önemli bir rolü olduğu kabulünden yola çıkan araştırma 2006 yılına ve 2007’nin ilk ayına odaklanmakta. Bu tarihlerin seçilmesinde, 2006 yılı boyunca Hrant Dink’in Türklüğe hakaret suçundan yargılanmasının devam etmesi, Fransız Parlamentosu’nda Ermeni soykırımını inkâr edenlerin cezalandırılmasına yönelik yasa tasarısının gündeme gelmesi ve oylanması, Kürt sorununun bulunmadığı ve Kürtlerin ve DTP’nin PKK ile işbirliği içinde olduğu iddialarının yaygın biçimde ifade edilmesi, Karikatür Krizi, Papa’nın Türkiye ziyareti ve Rahip Santoro cinayeti nedeniyle Türkiye’deki azınlıkları hedef alan milliyetçi ve ırkçı söylemlerin tırmanışa geçmesi ve bu tırmanışın 2007 yılı başındaki Hrant Dink cinayeti ile doruk noktasına ulaşması önemli rolü oynamakta. Çalışma, okunurluk oranlarına göre seçilen üç ulusal (Posta, Hürriyet, Zaman) ve Türkiye’nin farklı etnik/kültürel yapılara sahip bölgelerinde yüksek tirajları ve okunma oranlarıyla yerel ilişkiler, değer yargıları ve normların yeniden üretilmesine aracılık eden üç yerel (Yeni Balıkesir, Güneyde İmece, Sonsöz) gazetede yer alan haber yorum ve köşe yazılarının analizine dayanmakta.

Milli Mucadele Donemi Turk milletinin gecirdigi en onemli donum noktalarindan biri olmustur. Bu donemde Turk milleti cok acili ve sancili bir surecten gecmistir. Var olma ya da yok olma mucadelesi verilen bu mucadelede Mudanya Ateskes Antlasmasi ile birlikte, cephelerde kazanilan zaferlerin ve basarilarin ardindan yeni bir surec baslamis ve elde edilen askeri basarilar yerini diplomasiye birakmistir. Donemin Sovyet Rusya’si ise, Turk milletinin vermis oldugu Milli Mucadele surecini yakindan takip etmistir. Ayni sekilde, Sovyet Rusya yazili basini da Milli Mucadele Donemi’nin askeri ve siyasi gelismelerini yakindan takip etmis ve kamuoyuna duyurmustur. Bu sekilde Sovyet Rusya yazili basini bize, Milli Mucadele tarihimize yabanci yazili basin gozuyle bakma firsati vermektedir. Buradan hareketle bu calismada, Mudanya Ateskes Antlasmasi’nin Sovyet Rusya yazili basininda nasil yansitildigi gazetelerde yayinlanan yazi ve haberlerden hareketle ortaya koymaya calisilmistir.

Bireyler varoluşundan bu yana çeşitli etmenlerin etkisiyle daha refah bir yaşam kurmak, ekonomik yeterliliklerini sağlamak ve daha güvenli bir ortamda yaşamlarını sürdürmek amacıyla sürekli göç etmişlerdir. Ancak göç olgusu sadece fiziksel bir hareketten ibaret değildir. Hem göç eden bireylerde hem de göç edilen topluluklarda önemli sosyal ve kültürel değişimler meydana getirmektedir. Göç sürecinde en fazla etkilenen bireyler olduğundan yeni topluma uyum süreçleri de kolay olmamaktadır. Zira bireyler kaynak ülkelerinde var olan kimliklerini yansıtan geleneklerini, değerlerini ve normlarını beraberinde getirmekte ve yeni toplumlarında yaşamaya çalışmaktadırlar. Göç sürecinin bu özelliği, bireylerin yeni toplumlarıyla uyumsuzluk seviyesinin artmasına ve entegrasyonun yavaş ilerlemesine yol açmaktadır. Bu durum da göç eden bireylerin toplumdan soyutlanmasına, dışlanmasına ve etiketlenmesine neden olmaktadır. Entegrasyon sürecinin uzaması, bireylerin sapmış veya suç davranışlarını göstermesini sağlayabilmektedir. Bu kapsamda 2011 yılından itibaren Orta Doğu bölgesinde meydana gelen kaos ve kargaşa ortamı özellikle Suriye’de yaşayan bireylerin kitlesel göçüne yol açmıştır. Bununla birlikte Güney Doğu Asya ile Afrika ülkelerinden de bireyler ekonomik, siyasal ve güvenlik sebepleriyle Türkiye’ye göç etmeyi sürdürmüşlerdir. Her iki göçmen grubunun Türkiye’yi transit ülke olarak görmeyip hedef ülke kapsamında değerlendirmesi nedeniyle ülke genelinde önemli sosyal, ekonomik ve güvenlik alanlarında sorunlar yaşanmasını sağlamıştır. Bu temel çerçeveden hareketle, düzensiz göçmenler ile geçici koruma statüsünde bulunan Suriyelilerin 2012-2021 yılları arasında Jandarma Genel Komutanlığının sorumluluk bölgesinde işledikleri asayiş suçları analiz edilmiştir. İşlenen suçların asayiş suç verilerine yansıması, suçların kaynağındaki etmenler ve toplum genelinde oluşturdukları etkiler kültürel özellikler ve sosyal yapı unsurları doğrultusunda incelenmiştir. Yapılan analiz neticesinde göçmen grupların toplum genelinde algılandığı gibi çok yüksek suç oranlarına sahip olmadıkları tespit edilmiştir. Ancak her iki grubun asayiş suçlarını işleme oranlarının yıllara sari olacak şekilde yükseliş eğiliminde olduğu ifade edilmelidir. Bununla beraber geçici koruma statüsündeki Suriyelilerin ekonomik yeterliliklerini sürdürmek ve kazanmak amacıyla ekonomik temelli suçları işledikleri tespit edilmiştir. Ekonomik yetersizliğin neden olduğu gerilimler nedeniyle şiddet esaslı suçları da işledikleri saptanmıştır. Diğer taraftan Güney Doğu Asya ülkelerinden gelen düzensiz göçmenlerin kültürel faktörlerin etkisiyle cinsel suçlar ile daha fazla ilişkilendirildiği belirlenmiştir. Tespit edilen bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda, suç oranlarındaki artışın durdurulması ve azaltılması amacıyla toplumsal odaklı ve kırık camlar temelli kolluk stratejileri ile compstat türü analizlerin uygulanması yönünde önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

Milli Mücadele Dönemi Türk milletinin geçirdiği en önemli dönüm noktalarından biri olmuştur. Bu dönemde Türk milleti çok acılı ve sancılı bir süreçten geçmiştir.
