Background: Type 2 diabetes is a serious clinical problem in both India and the UK. Adoption of a healthy lifestyle through dietary and physical activity modification can help prevent type 2 diabetes. However, implementing lifestyle modification programmes to high risk groups is expensive and alternative cheaper methods are needed. We are using a short messaging service (SMS) programme in our study as a tool to provide healthy lifestyle advice and an aid to motivation. The aim of the study is to assess the efficacy and user acceptability of text messaging employed in this way for people with pre-diabetes (HbA1c 6.0% to ≤6.4%; 42-47 mmol/mol) in the UK and India. Methods/design: This is a randomised, controlled trial with participants followed up for 2 years. After being screened and receiving a structured education programme for prediabetes, participants are randomised to a control or intervention group. In the intervention group, text messages are delivered 2-3 times weekly and contain educational, motivational and supportive content on diet, physical activity, lifestyle and smoking. The control group undergoes monitoring only. In India, the trial involves 5 visits after screening (0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months). In the UK there are 4 visits after screening (0, 6, 12 and 24 months). Questionnaires (EQ-5D, RPAQ, Transtheoretical Model of Behavioural Change, and food frequency (UK)/24 h dietary recall (India)) and physical activity monitors (Actigraph GT3X+ accelerometers) are assessed at baseline and all follow-up visits. The SMS acceptability questionnaires are evaluated in all follow-up visits. The primary outcome is progression to type 2 diabetes as defined by an HbA1c of 6.5% or over(India) and by any WHO criterion(UK). Secondary outcomes are the changes in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose; lipids; proportion of participants achieving HbA1c ≤6.0%; HOMA-IR; HOMA-β; acceptability of SMS; dietary parameters; physical activity and quality of life. Discussion: The study is designed to assess the efficacy of tailored text messaging in addition to standard lifestyle advice to reduce the progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes in the two different countries.

Access to health services in Nigeria remains low due to socio-cultural factors and religious beliefs. The USAID-funded Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria project uses a coordinated package of interventions, including digital approaches, to promote healthy behaviors among key target groups. Kacici Kacici is an engaging educational 'choose your adventure' digital game that allows participants to choose their path, determine the story's outcome, and become a 'game hero' via mobile phones.

Using Interactive Voice Response (IVR), callers use their mobile phone keypad to make choices that affect the outcome of the story in key health areas such as Maternal, Newborn, Child Health + Nutrition (MNCH+N), Family Planning/Reproductive Health (FP/RH) and Malaria. The games offer multiple pathways for callers to choose from. If callers make the wrong choice, they are given the correct answer. They can continue to play or call back to try again to achieve 'game hero' status, interactively engaging with the information and increasing the likelihood of retention. Airtel subscribers can access the game for free by dialing 421, while other mobile operators can access the game by calling a dedicated number at standard call rates. Game development includes scripting, defining response logic, recording content, and pre-testing before launch.

Between July 2020 and July 2023, a total of 688,240 calls were made by 373,312 individuals, collectively spending 4,249,130 minutes engaging with the KK games on 421. Additionally, 30,822 callers attained “game hero” status across various stages.This underlines the wide reach of the intervention, demonstrating its effectiveness in engaging and informing a diverse audience.

Why would people use Short Message Service (SMS) to say something they would not say in person? There is a trend that SMS is becoming more and more popular because it facilitates more extended modes of communications. Using technology acceptance model, we hypothesize the attitude of SMS would be influenced by its perceived effectiveness for communications, perceived ease of use, and subjective norm. Besides the special aspects of communications, conflict avoidance and privacy protection will enforce the impact of perceived effectiveness of SMS for communication. We investigated 953 SMS users and the results support most of our hypotheses. Furthermore, our analyses also show there are differences between females and males on the influence mechanism behind their attitude towards SMS.

The use of private vehicles intensifies the existing unbearable traffic jam and majority of the parents consider school buses to be largely unsafe for their kids. However, safe and user friendly school buses can reduce the use of private vehicles and will eventually cut back the traffic jam in cities especially in school hours. All buses can be tracked by the guardians using the proposed intelligent and secured tracking system for school buses. This proposed system includes an Android application that can be employed to send notifications during entry and exit of the students using radio frequency identification (RFID) as well as Fingerprint scanner, ensuring arrival confirmation of the student by dual authentication. The system will also notify parents when the bus is a 15-min distance away from the home. To ensure on-board safety, 'Window Signalling' will also be used. The focus of the research is to display the feasibility of a safe and intelligent school bus using secured tracking system based on dual authentication procedures. It is expected that the offshoot of this research initiative will regain the confidence and reliability of parents in school bus and reduce the use of individual transport. A smart school bus will keep the student safe, easing the tension for parents and the city will have a smooth traffic system.

It is possible to connect to remote areas as it employs wireless technology. The new system is user friendly, easy to access and far more efficient than the existing system.

Penalty corner in field hockey is a complex motor skill. It required high level of coordination. The aim of this study was to provide important biomechanical variables related information for the Sports biomechanist, Young sports scientist, Coaches and also for drag flick specialist for their performance enhancement programs. Four specialist male drag-flickers of two different universities namely LNIPE, Gawalior , and Aligarh Muslim University , Aligarh, age range 19-25 years, height ranged 174-182cm and weight range 59.4-66.8 Kg. and all having six to eight years of experiences were participated in this study. Three dimensional (3D) experimental setup was conducted for the study. All of the measurements were carried out on the Asto truf ground in their respective universities fields. Two video cameras Canon Legria SF-10 were used to capture all drag flick trials. The shuttering speed of cameras were set on 1/1000 and 50hz frame rate. Both cameras were set with the help of tripod placed at right side of the subjects mounted at a height of 1.2m. During captured drag flick, the distances of cameras were set at 13m and 17m from the stationary ball position and optical axes of the recording cameras were intersect each other on the subject at 90° and 60° respectively to right side in a field setting. The drag flickers and ball movement during the drag flick phase were recorded. Videos footages were edited and synchronized for 3D biomechanical analysis. DLT method was used to calibrate of both the cameras. The drag distance, stride length, ball velocity and acceleration, angles, linear and angular velocity and linear and angular acceleration of shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist of left and right side were digitized and three dimensional data was obtained with the help of Max TRAQ 3D motion analysis software.SPSSv.16. was used to calculate the selected parameters and statistical analysis mean and standard deviations. T-test was used to find out the comparison between LNIPE, Gawalior and A.M.U.Aligarh. And the result was found that drag distance and hockey stick blade, linear velocity of shoulder (L&R), pelvic (L&R), Knee (L) and wrist (R),angular velocity of shoulder (L&R), elbow (L&R), pelvic(L&R), Knee(L), ankle(R) and wrist(R), linear acceleration of hockey stick blade and ball, shoulder (L), Knee(R), ankle(R) and toe(R), angular acceleration of wrist (R) and joint angles of shoulder (L&R), elbow (L), wrist (R) and ankle(R) during drag differs significantly and hence does influences on drag flick technique under accuracy condition.

This paper focuses on the role of the structure of turns in quasi-synchronous text-based computer mediated-conversation. Prior research has found that interactants in this type of communication submit their messages in two ways: either as a long single message or as a sequence of shorter postings. We hypothesize that the latter strategy – called utterance splitting – facilitates communicating online both in terms of turn-taking (initiation of repairs and holding the floor) and sentence processing (predicting informational content and lowering entropy). To evaluate the hypothesis, an experiment in which naive participants interacted with a confederate writer was conducted. We found that although communicative success did not depend on the condition to which the participants were assigned, the conversations in which the confederate sent split utterances were, on average, shorter and re-quired less words to communicate the same intention.

GUI Based Remote power distribution system using GSM' aims to design and implement efficient and cost effective solution for replacing the manual process of power cut/load shedding from a centralized location, where the control is accessed via the GUI application. It is developed from event driven programming language where click of a mouse on command button of the application sends a specific coded message via GSM modem. It consists of two GSM modems, one at the control station and the other one connected to the transformer from where the electricity is divided into certain branches in an area. Here the control station modem utilizes GSM network to turn a branch line of a transformer either on/off. It also consists of a LCD display which displays the state of the channel/branches of the transformer as either on/off. In case of network failure, a set of manual switches have been provided to turn on/off the channels manually. Electromagnetic relays are used as circuit breakers.

Background: Almost one-half of 12-15 year olds living in deprived areas of the UK have dental caries (tooth decay) with few oral health promotion programmes aimed at children of this age. Mobile phone-based interventions such as short messaging service (SMS) interventions have been found effective at changing certain behaviours and improving health outcomes. This protocol describes the BRIGHT Trial, investigating the clinical and costeffectiveness of a behaviour change intervention-classroom-based session (CBS) embedded in the curriculum and a series of SMS delivered to participants twice daily to remind them to brush their teeth, compared to usual curriculum and no SMS-to reduce the prevalence of dental caries in young people from deprived areas. Objectives: To investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a complex intervention to improve the oral health of young people living in deprived areas. Methods/design: This is a school-based, assessor-blinded, two-arm cluster-randomised controlled trial with an internal pilot trial. Overall, the trial will involve approximately 5040 11-13 year olds in 42 schools with a 3-year follow-up. The trial will take place in secondary schools in England, Scotland and Wales. The primary outcome is the presence of carious lesions in permanent teeth at 3 years. Secondary outcomes are: number of carious teeth, frequency of twice-daily toothbrushing, plaque levels, gingivitis, child health-related quality of life and oral healthrelated quality of life. A cost-utility analysis will be conducted. Discussion: The findings of the trial have implications for embedding oral health interventions into school curricula guidance produced by national bodies, including departments for education and dental public health and guideline-development organisations.

This study presents the use of web SMS technology as an alternative method for primary school notification system. By integrating the system with SMS gateway, it will enable the primary school notification system to send information to parents’ mobile phone directly. The traditional methods of notifying parents about the school matters by sending letter and written memo are time consuming and the updated information may not reach the parents. This integration allows information to be disseminated from computer to mobile phone at any time without requiring face to face meeting or the use of other media such as paper-based notice or verbal notice from the students. Furthermore, parents can always be alert and aware of the latest announcement or information no matter where they are. Uptake of breast cancer screening is lowest in areas of London with many hard to reach communities. This report evaluates two interventions to improve uptake of breast cancer screening in the Royal London Borough of Greenwich with many hard to reach communities. The interventions involved splitting 2,004 women eligible for screening into two groups. Group 1 who were sent letter only invites has a target group (n=1,452) and eligible women screened were (n=878). Whilst, group 2 who were sent letter invites combined with Short Message service (SMS) reminder has a target group (n=552) and eligible women screened were (n=376). The result shows a significant difference in attendance rates between the two invitation methods. The screening uptake by the women who received invitation letter only had an attendance rate of 60 percent (table1). The screening uptake by the women who received invitation letter and SMS reminder was 68 percent (table ). This amounts to 8 percent differential rate, which translates to an additional 44 women who were screened, as a direct result of receiving an SMS reminder. Applying the achieved result to the "Letter Only" group indicates that an additional 12 women would theoretically have been screened if the 'Letter only' invites were also sent with SMS reminder. An overall 2.54 percentage point increase in screening outcome was achieved when compared the uptake in the months of the project (July to Dec 2011) with the uptake in similar months in 2010. Finally, the results prove that intervention by letter invite combined with SMS reminder is the most effective method of improving uptake of breast cancer screening in the borough with many hard to reach communities.

The structure of my thesis consists of two parts. In Part I, I will explain what location based service is and a short note about GSM network architecture. The thesis will then present some ideas about how SMS service work. Finally, I will finish my Part I by providing a brief idea of how we can find present location of a user in GSM network architecture. Part II of the thesis will focus on presenting some mobile applications which give location based services. Then my thesis will explain the requirements and implementations of those applications. The thesis will also examine testing phases and results of my applications. The conclusion of this thesis includes the challenges of my applications and its corresponding solutions along with my future works in this field .

SMS messaging services have evolved to include bulk SMS messaging alongside the sending of single messages (such as one-time passwords and delivery notifications), interactive messaging (such as group messaging services). Smart home automation system is increasingly used due to the wide manufacturer brands and various available technologies. From a social point of view, residents are admitted to smart homes for comfort, luxury, improving quality of live, and for providing security against intrusion and burglars. Secondly, home automation is achieved using a single controller, monitoring and the controlling many interconnected appliances such as lights, power plugs, HVAC system, humidity and temperature sensors, gas, smoke and fire detectors, audio, video and home theater as well as security and emergency systems. Smart homes are cheap, low-power, cost effective, efficient, and realize the automation of a variety of domestic appliances using user-friendly interface as remote control or any other handheld devices. Elderly, handicapped patients, and people with disabilities who have problems with locomotion difficulty can benefit from this smart home to totally operate, with high performance, all appliances and devices from anywhere in the house. The purpose of this study is to analyze the kinematic variables (shuttle velocity and racket angle) and segmental variables. For the purpose of the study eight male intervarsity badminton players were selected as the subjects. The mean age, height and body weight of the subjects were reported as 18.8 ± 0.9 years, 174.8 ± 3.5 cm & 66.9 ± 4.5 kg respectively. Canon Legria HF S10 Camcorder operating at 60 Hz used to record the movement. The identified clips were analyzed with the help of Silicon Coach Pro7 motion analysis software. The result of study revealed that there is significant difference existed between forehand short service and backhand short service at racket angle and shoulder angle. Whereas there was negative relationship exists between shoulder angle and shuttle velocity.

With the current advancement in wireless networks and various technologies implemented for automation, more innovative and improved ideas are developed to build automation systems facilitating remote controlling and monitoring of devices. In this paper, a GSM based wireless home automation system is proposed and deployed which executes its function of controlling and monitoring appliances remotely. It is compliant, costeffective, low power consumption; highly efficient GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) based wireless home system. The Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) is improvised toembellish the system's security and ease of operation. With the help of this system the user can access his home appliances from anywhere and at anytime as per the requirement aiding convenience. The system permits the user direct devices through his mobile by sending voice commands using IVRS system. It also enables the user to monitor the status of loads with SMS update. A detailed system analysis is carried out and presented in this paper.

Covert Channels constitute an important security threat because they are used to ex-filtrate sensitive information, to disseminate malicious code, and, more alarmingly, to transfer instructions to a criminal (or terrorist). This work presents zero day vulnerabilities and weaknesses, that we discovered, in the Short Message Service (SMS) protocol, which allow the embedding of high capacity covert channels. We show that an intruder, by exploiting these SMS vulnerabilities, can bypass the existing security infrastructure (including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, content filters) of a sensitive organization and the primitive content filtering software at an SMS Center (SMSC). We found that the SMS itself, along with its value added services (like picture SMS, ring tone SMS), appears to be much more susceptible to security vulnerabilities than other services in IP-based networks. To demonstrate the effectiveness of covert channels in SMS, we have used our tool GeheimSMS 1 that practically embeds data bytes (not only secret, but also hidden) by composing the SMS in Protocol Description Unit (PDU) mode and transmitting it from a mobile device using a serial or Bluetooth link. The contents of the overt (benign) message are not corrupted; hence the secret communication remains unsuspicious during the transmission and reception of SMS. Our experiments on active cellular networks show that 1 KB of a secret message can be transmitted in less than 3 minutes by sending 26 SMS without raising an alarm over suspicious activity.

This paper discusses two methods of controlling home appliances one is via voice to text SMS and other is to use the mobile as a remote control, this system will provide a benefit to the elderly and disable people and also to those who are unaware of typing an SMS.

Paper presents the way of transferring stereo images using SMS over GSM network. Generally, Stereo image is composed of two stereoscopic images in such way that gives three dimensional affect when viewed. GSM have two short messaging services, which can transfer images and sounds etc. Such services are known as; MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) and EMS (Extended Messaging Service). EMS can send Predefined sounds, animation and images but have limitation that it does not support widely. MMS can send much higher contents than EMS but need 3G and other network capability in order to send large size data up to 1000 bytes. Other limitations are Portability, content adaption etc. Our major aim in this paper is to provide an alternative way of sending stereo images over SMS which is widely supported than EMS. We develop an application using J2ME Platform.

‘GUI Based Remote power distribution system using GSM’ aims to design and implement efficient and cost effective solution for replacing the manual process of power cut/load shedding from a centralized location, where the control is accessed via the GUI application. It is developed from event driven programming language where click of a mouse on command button of the application sends a specific coded message via GSM modem. It consists of two GSM modems, one at the control station and the other one connected to the transformer from where the electricity is divided into certain branches in an area. Here the control station modem utilizes GSM network to turn a branch line of a transformer either on/off. It also consists of a LCD display which displays the state of the channel/branches of the transformer as either on/off. In case of network failure, a set of manual switches have been provided to turn on/off the channels manually. Electromagnetic relays are used as circuit breakers.

The project entitled "CHILD SAFETY & TRACKING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM" is an application that enables folks to observe their child's mobile phone. The parents can monitor where their children are (through GPS), and access a history of where they've been and set up alerts if their children are going outside of approved geographical zones. This paper proposed a model for child safety through smart phones that provides the option to track the location of their children as well as in case of emergency children is in a position to send a fast message and its current location via Short Message services. This system uses golem based mostly mobile phones for the computer code to be run.
