Political Violence in Latin America

Esta entrevista tuvo lugar el día 1 de noviembre de 2008, en el contexto de una visita de Jean Franco a la Universidad de Oregón para participar en el Simposio "From Che to Ramona to Evo: Leftist Political Cultures in Latin America 1960s-2000s", organizado el día anterior, 31 de octubre, por el Programa de Estudios Latinoamericanos. Como los lectores podrán apreciar, la conversación tuvo un carácter informal, pero no por ello menos serio, en la cafetería del museo de arte del campus, el Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Arts, que en esos días del año es siempre un animado espacio de actividad para conmemorar el Día de Muertos. Aunque en aquel momento hablamos de publicar la entrevista en una revista de estudios latinoamericanos, por una u otra razón la grabación quedó archivada-aunque no olvidada-y no volvimos a ella hasta hace unos meses cuando pensamos que publicarla en Periphērica podría servir como nuestro pequeño homenaje a Jean Franco. Jean nos dejó hace ahora dos años, en diciembre de 2022, y en 2024 se ha cumplido también el centenario de su nacimiento.

This article discusses the creation of a mural by the neighbourhood history workshop in a working-class district of Buenos Aires. The mural was chosen as a way of giving immediacy and visibility to memories of three distinct intervals in the history of the neighbourhood, the periods before, during and after military rule. In creating the mural, participants were able to re-establish some of the community solidarity lost dur ing the era when community leaders were subject to repression and "disappearance" and give voice to some of the insecurities of the present. The mural portrays some surprising presences and absences in the collective memory of the different phases of the neighbourhood's existence and points to ways in which old and new members of the community can work toward a common future.

Official stories from media centers in New York and Mexico City say that most violence in Latin America is a product of the drug trade. Organized Violence exposes how that narrative serves corporate and state interests and de-politicizes situations that have more to do with coal, oil, or rare wood extraction than with cocaine. Global capital and violence reinforce conditions that fortify the current economic order, and whether it be the military, police, or death squads that pull the trigger, economic expansion benefits from the violent elimination of the opposition, who are most often dispossessed and precarious communities.

En este texto se propone una lectura en calve histórica de la violencia. El objetivo es esbozar una interpretación latinoamericana del papel de
la violencia que impera en la región, superando las lecturas dicotómicas en las que se juega la interpretación: la violencia como  lo opuesto a la paz, la violencia como lo contrario a la vida democrática. Para ello se hará una caracterización de algunas de las tendencias generales que definen al capitalismo contemporáneo. Esto permitirá pensar en la dialéctica de creación y destrucción propia de un capitalismo decadente,
en el que los procesos de adhesión, que hacen cada vez más difícil su superación, no son suficientes; de ahí que el ejercicio de la violencia cumpla un lugar estratégico para asegurar la concentración de la riqueza social y el monopolio del ejercicio del poder.

En este texto presentamos la "Introducción" del libro "En la cresta de la ola. Debates y definiciones en torno a la historia del tiempo presente", así como el índice general. El libro está dividido en tres grandes secciones. La primera aborda los debates y definiciones sobre las temporalidades de esta historia, así como las temáticas estudiadas y algunos aspectos éticos y políticos al realizar esta historiografía. La segunda sección emprende las fuentes y metodologías utilizadas en este campo historiográfico. Finalmente, la tercera sección revisa el surgimiento y desarrollo de los campos en algunos países latinoamericanos. La Introducción explica el libro, pero también explica nuestra posición conceptual respecto a la historia del tiempo presente.

En este ensayo exploro la representación del paisaje en los textos que hablan del conflicto bélico en Cuba (1868-1898), ya que a pesar de existir numerosos ensayos que confirman la importancia de la naturaleza dentro del romanticismo y la identidad hispanoamericana, faltan reflexiones sobre su representación en textos cuya función es describir hechos tan violentos. ¿Cómo la estética de la naturaleza amplifica o disminuye las acciones guerreras? ¿Cómo nociones de lo nacional o lo imperial intervienen en la reconstrucción literaria del paisaje y los sujetos en estas narraciones?

In this essay I explore the representation of nature in texts that speak about Cuba’s wars of independence (1868-1898). Even though there are numerous essays that confirm the importance of nature within romanticism and Spanish-American identity, we still lack reflections on its representation in texts whose function is to describe such violent acts. How does the aesthetics of nature amplify or diminish war actions? How do notions of the national or the imperial intervene in the reconstruction of the literary landscape and social subjects in these novels?

In this paper I examine the transition from episodes of intense political violence towards democratic consolidation across Latin America.

There is great disparity across the continent. Whilst the 'Northern Triangle' of central America, including Guatemala and El Salvador remain mired in gang violence - largely spillover from their civil wars in the 1980s, Argentina and Chile of the 'Southern Cone' have made huge strides towards creating robust democracies. Countries such as Ecuador and Venezuela have retarded democratic consolidation in recent years despite having had much less violent histories than most of their neighbouring countries

Desde esta perspectiva, la construcción de sociedades fuertes y, del mismo modo, de gobiernos fortalecidos, supone la construcción de unos también fuertes y comprometidos lazos entre éstas y los lugares específicos (topos) que habitan; unos lazos que dada la innegable naturaleza emocional que los caracteriza, en razón de dar cuenta de la correspondiente adscripción (philia-ción) de tales sociedades a los mismos, no pueden ser menos que phílicos.
