3.4 Research Design Table 2: Schematic Diagram of the Proportional Stratified Sampling Design In this study, the descriptive research approach was used to obtain information concerning the existing looms and current status and describing the conditions in which it operates (Key 1997). It was also utilized for a systematic and accurate description of the various stages of the study. Through the use of the descriptive method, the various stages involved in the design and construction of the loom as well as its mode of operation were described. In this research, the accessible population for the study is heterogeneous in nature. The heterogeneity of the accessible population was treated under proportional stratified sampling using stratum to identify each of the strata which come in different representations. Consequently, each category in the population will be treated as a stratum. Leedy (1974) asserts that for quality research, at least 30% of the accessible population is a fair representation for acceptable results. It also enables the researcher to lower the variance of the research. However, due to the scarce resources available for the study, 50% was used to arrive at a smaller sample population.

Both the hand and the powered drills were used. These tools were used to drill circular holes in the metal levers and wooden treadles of the loom as shown in Plates 2 and 3 below:

A thin pointed piece of metal that is pushed through pieces of wood to fasten them together. Most of the wooden and metal joints of the loom were also fastened with screws as well as bolts and nuts; that is, where nails are not applicable. This is illustrated in Plate 1 below: Plate 1: Screws and Nails

It has a replaceable blade held in tension in a frame. Hacksaw frames are adjustable to accommodate 250mm- 300mm length blade. Blade pitches of 14, 18, 24 and 32 teeth per 25mm are available. Soft materials require course pitch and hard materials require a fine pitch of blade. The hacksaw was used to prepare the metal heald shafts.

The screw which comes in various sizes is used for loosening and tightening screws. It is made up of a metallic rod normally tapered at one end and fixed into a plastic or wooden handle. In this project, it was used to loosen and tighten parts of the loom.

The other (tenon saw) belongs to a group of saws known as “back saws” which are made of brass or steel stiffening rib folded over the thin blade to prevent it from bucking. The teeth are sharpened for cross cutting. The handle is of a close type and shaped so that the saw is easy to use in a horizontal position on the bench. See Plate 10 below:

It is a tool used for taking measurements. It consists of a along narrow piece of cloth, soft plastic or thin metal pieces. It was used to take the right dimension of the loom parts before they were cut. Plate 11 shows the Measuring Tape. Plate 11: Measuring Tape

The design and construction of the loom with dual shedding systems was based upon the table loom as shown below: The above diagram in Plate 12 consists of wood members (beams) which have been constructed into a rectangular frame by gluing and firmly securing with screws. Other accessories or components attached to the loom structure consist of the cloth roller, warp roller, reed, sley, heald wires and shafts controlled by levers via chains. The table loom is mounted on a table (thus the name table loom given to it) to give it height for the operation to be effective.

The design of the loom comprises assemblage of wooden frames as depicted in the diagram below Figure 1: Front view of Loom

The loom with dual shedding systems is composed of two structured frames made of various components an accessories such as the lever, heald shaft and heald wires. The frames have been designed in such a way to carr the heald shafts which are secured firmly in a groove located at the two sides of the frame. The upper end of th grooves is fitted to the lever that supports the shafts with a chain to keep it in equilibrium and also for the liftin of the shafts when there is a depression on the lever. There is also the Intermediate frame which consists of a set of lams, cloth roller, warp roller, treadles and supporting chains and cords. The intermediate frame has four upright wood members which are supported with horizontal members at the sides, top and the bottom. The front and the rear are connected to the cloth and warp roller respectively. A well-structured two sets of lams are mounted to the base of the frame in a criss-cross manner. These wood members are secured with glue, screws, bolts and nuts to keep the intermediate frame upright and sturdy as shown below:

The lams are arranged in criss -cross manner, having four odd and four even numbers. The bottom lams are secured with metal rods and the top ones are secured with a set of springs.

Below is the arrangement of the treadles from the rear of the loom. The treadles numbering 8 are secured and pinned to the back of the loom with a metal rod. They are held in position with a spring and kept in equilibrium. The spring attached to the treadles are secured at the base of the rectangular frame. The treadle extends from the rear to the front of the loom to a point appropriate for the weaver to use during weaving. A cord is used to secure the lams to the treadle according to the weave structure to be woven.

Compression garments have been extensively in varied medical and sports applications. The article critically reviews the design aspects of knit compression garments for suitability in sports and medical applications. The influences of physical attributes of suitable knitted fabrics on the amount of pressure generated on the underlying body have been studied. The tensile properties of the knit fabrics having various orientations to stretch, predictive pressure generated by compression garments have been primarily considered. Subsequently a method of validating the reliability of laplace law for calculating applied pressures for calculation of applied pressures that are generated by compression garments have been highlighted. Modeling of compression garments has been done with the intended value of unit pressure for the body circumference of a variable curvature radius. The basis of modeling considered can be applied in designing compression garments supporting external treatment such as after burn therapy and lymphadema. The physical and mechanical properties of nylon/spandex knitted fabrics used as commercial medical compression garments have been analyzed. The findings help to understand whether a fabric is suitable for engineering compression garments and also for estimating the required compression force for designing an individualized compression with the medical compression fabrics. The dynamic pressure attenuation of compression garment is studied experimentally. The findings enable a better understanding of the characteristics of elastic fabric used for making compression garments, and prove useful for medical practitioners with scientific developments and for effective applications. The physical and mechanical properties of nylon/spandex knitted fabrics as commercial medical compression garments have been investigated. Specifically fabric elasticity and bursting strength have been studied to show the applicability of the fabrics for providing satisfactory compression. Such study is necessary to understand whether a fabric is suitable for engineering compression garments and also for estimating the required compression force for designing an individualized compression garments with medical compression fabrics. Study has been carried out to evolve an effective design and development of various high stretch compression products by analyzing fabric size, stretch properties and clothing pressure for different knit structures.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Der sogenannte Mantel der Heiligen Elisabeth von Thüringen konnte am Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien einer eingehenden Untersuchung und Restau- rierung unterzogen werden. Bei ersten Voruntersuchungen zur Restau- riergeschichte wurde die Vielfalt der verwendeten Reparaturfäden doku- mentiert, dabei konnten fünf voneinander abzugrenzende Restaurier- phasen festgestellt werden. Aufgrund der in starkem Kontrast zum Ori- ginalgewebe stehenden und ungewöhnlich brillanten Farbigkeit der Reparaturfäden ging man bei diesen Materialien von einer synthetischen Färbung aus. Eine Farbstoffanalyse sollte beweisen, dass die Interven- tionen frühestens ab dem letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts ausge- führt worden sein konnten. Um Klarheit darüber zu erlangen, wurden an der Netherlands Cultural Heritage Agency Farbstoffuntersuchungen mittels HPLC-PDA durchgeführt. Die Resultate ergaben, dass zwei der verwendeten Fäden mit synthetischen Farbstoffen gefärbt worden waren, womit ein terminus post quem für die Datierung der letzten Reparaturphase vorlag. Die Farbstoffanalysen lieferten zwar keinen Hin- weis auf den Zeitpunkt der jeweiligen Eingriffe, bestätigten jedoch die Ergebnisse der konservierungswissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen. Die große Bedeutung der Zusammenarbeit unterschiedlicher Disziplinen konnte am Beispiel dieses Objektes einmal mehr aufgezeigt werden.

SUMMARY
The so called cloak of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia underwent an intensi- ve examination and conservation at the Institute of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The variety of threads used for earlier repairs was documented during the initial preliminary research; at least five different phases of restoration could be found. Because of the strong contrast to the original fabric and the extraordinary brilliant colours of the repair threads it was thought that those must be synthe- tic-dyed. A dyestuff analysis should prove that the repairs were execu- ted as early as the beginning of the last third of the 19th century. To gain clarity analyses with HPLC-PDA were made at the Netherlands Cul- tural Heritage Agency. The results indicated that two of the threads used had been coloured with synthetic dyes, thus giving us a terminus post quem for the date of the last phases of repairs. The analyses did not hint at the date of the old repairs, however they confirmed the results of the conservation-scientific examinations. Once again, this project demon- strated the great importance of collaboration between different discipli- nes in collating research and information.

Most textiles from Roman Britain are the same tabbies and 2/2 plain, chevro1 and diamond twills which were already established in the British Iron Age anc which were almost certainly products of the warp-weighted loom. Alongside thes are a small number of wool textile-types which are new to Britain in the Romai period. These are a tabby weave with weft-faced bands, an extended tabby know1 as ‘half-basket weave’, and 2/1 twill. The textiles with weft-faced bands are typica of the eastern provinces and by the second century AD were woven on the two beam loom,’ half-basket weave is also a Mediterranean weave, although it becam: a ‘typical Gallo-Roman product’;"? and 2/1 twills are believed to have been wover on the two-beam loom." The thick ground warp and the paired weft were spun from Hairy fleece types; the thin warp is of Hairy Medium wool, and the pile of Medium wool. (I will examine the implications of this later.) Only the weft has any natural pigmentation. It would have appeared mottled brown and white, but in fact was concealed by the warp. The warp was white, but the pile was dyed blue with indigotin, from woad or an indigo plant. The alternating stripes of thick and thin warp against the selvedge might be decorative, but there is no indica- tion that they were in contrasting colours.
