History and Photography

Eritrea, historically at the heart of Italy’s colonial project and a symbolic site of its inception, stands as a crossroads of identities, powers, and imaginaries. During his travels in the 1960s and 1970s, Pier Paolo Pasolini developed a poetic and political representation of the country that distances itself both from colonial rhetoric and from simplified postcolonial interpretations. In texts such as La grazia degli eritrei and Post scriptum alla grazia degli eritrei, the Friulian author offers a gaze that, though lacking ethnographic or documentary intent, powerfully conveys the dignity and complexity of the Eritrean colonial experience, turning travel into a symbolic device for reflecting on the human condition, alterity, and the crisis of Western modernity.
Through a close analysis of recurring motifs in his writing—particularly the representations of women, urban space, and community—this article explores the specificity of Pasolini’s vision of Eritrea, emphasizing his constant tension between realism and abstraction, between political commitment and poetic vision. Pasolini’s Eritrea thus emerges as a space of radical alterity, marked by colonial suffering but also by a profound resilient force, where “grace” becomes both an aesthetic and ethical category through which to rethink the relationships between center and periphery, colonizers and colonized, past and present.

Tra le tante storie di guerra e di soldati che sono solito proporre al Lettori, ecco quella di un eroe civile ma, in qualche modo, coinvolto in vicende militari poiché questa vicenda si svolse al tempo della spedizione internazionale in Cina quando dal nostro paese non partivano solo i soldati italiani ma anche quelli di altre nazioni coinvolte nell'operazione. Ed è una vicenda che parla di valore, professionalità, coraggio e prontezza di spirito quella di Michelangelo Garella, il ferroviere che salvò la vita a molti soldati del kaiser Guglielmo di Germania. Era il 20 agosto 1900 e l'Italia ancora viveva in una cappa di angoscia dopo il regicidio di Umberto I di poche settimane prima. Nondimeno gli impegni internazionali non si fermavano e così il coinvolgimento del nostro paese.

Spesso inizia tutto per caso, anche un articolo, anche una ricerca. E fu proprio per un caso che io m'imbattei in una fotografia d'un uomo ormai avanti con gli anni, in abiti borghesi, con al petto una medaglia sfocata che mi pareva un valore militare ed un'altra, quella sì inconfondibile, con il profilo coronato del sovrano. Era la medaglia commemorativa delle campagne in Africa istituita nel 1894. Nella foto, sul nastro, si vedeva anche una fascetta purtroppo illeggibile. Non conoscevo le vicende di Stefano Teppa ma da quello scatto in poi iniziai ad incuriosirmi, a cercare notizie e la mia ricerca fu in breve premiata permettendomi di scoprire un eroe canavesano protagonista di un evento epocale. Un uomo di cui, purtroppo, si conservava poca memoria e che oggi meriterebbe l'intitolazione di una via. Around the beginning of the 20 th century, the Egyptian capital of Cairo, colonised by the British since 1882, had become a global city. Economic opportunities in Cairo and other Egyptian cities drew an increasing number of people seeking better lives and fame from across Egypt, the region, the Mediterranean basin, and the world into their orbit. One of the results was the creation of a vibrant and rapidly expanding nocturnal leisure and entertainment industry. Recently, Raphael Cormack and Hanan Hammad have gifted readers with two excellent books that meticulously add the rise and development of Cairo's leisure and entertainment industry across the 20 th century to the historical record. While their accounts center different time periods and protagonists, both Cormack's Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt's Roaring '20s (2021) and Hammad's Unknown Past: Layla Murad, the Jewish-Muslim Star of Egypt (2022) write the history of popular entertainment, including music, singing, theatre, nightlife, and cinema from the perspective of the many women who came to play fundamentally important roles in its creation, spread, and popularity. During the American colonial period in the Philippines, Americans from different backgrounds made the upland trip to Baguio, the sole colonial hill station in the colony, primarily because of its cooler climate. Through an analysis of American travel accounts, I will show that the pace of traveling to Baguio had a particularly profound influence on American travelers' multisensory experiences while in transit. Before the Benguet Road was completed and opened in 1905, travelers endured slow and difficult travel conditions, so they saw themselves as resolute individuals who were worthy of the sensory delights that the highland environment offered. When the Benguet Road was opened and motorized vehicle transportation to Baguio was introduced shortly afterward, the faster pace of travel made American travelers captivated by the experiences of an easier and more sensorily overwhelming climb to the hill station.

The article asks about the role of photography in the relationship with urban spaces marked by transformations. To do this, it takes as its starting point the collection of the amateur photographer known as V8 and his records of “demolitions” in the city of Campinas-SP, Brazil. It is part of a collection about the photographer, organized by Maria Alice Rosa Ribeiro (CMU-Unicamp), and includes texts by Luiz Carlos Felizardo, Sylvia Caiuby Novaes, Josianne Francia Cerasoli, João Paulo Berto, Lucas Resck Menali Costa and Maria Alice Rosa Ribeiro. It is an expanded version of the exhibition “Aristides Pedro da Silva (V8), a photographer from Campinas”, and forms the second volume of the Orbis Pictus series.

Öz: Görsel iletişimin bir parçası olarak karşımıza çıkan illüstrasyonlar geçmişten günümüze popülerliğini sürdürmektedir. Çoğunlukla sanatçı ya da tasarımcılar tarafından dijital/el işi yöntemlerle gerçekleştirilen illüstrasyonlara son yıllarda yeni bir etki alanı eklenmeye başlamıştır. Yapay zekâ olarak nitelendirilen bu etki, insan dışındaki bir varlığın da (makinenin) illüstrasyonlar üretebileceğini göstermektedir. Makinelerin illüstrasyon alanında insan sınırlarına yaklaşmaya başlaması birçok sorgulamayı ve tartışmayı beraberinde getirmektedir. Yapay zekânın sonsuz sayıda görseller üretmesi bu çalışmaların niteliğini sorgulatırken, insan yaratıcılığının geleceği üzerine de düşündürmektedir. O conhecimento visual que possuímos da sociedade brasileira do séculoXIX deve-se especialmente à fotografia, técnica trazida da Europa e difundida com o auxílio do Imperador Dom Pedro II. Graças à nova técnica, mais barata que a pintura, o indivíduo fazia-se retratar com a aparência de europeu a fim de se afirmar socialmente, pois a fotografia é até hoje aceita como documento da realidade. Este trabalho pretende apresentar quais elementos foram utilizados naquela épocaafim de criar uma nova identidade através da fotografia, e como eles pretendiam agir na percepção que as pessoas tinham da realidade. No retrato, o sujeito, quando fotografado, se torna ator interpretando a vida que deseja para si, e alguns elementos, como a pose, cenário e objetos de cena auxiliam na criação desta simulação, para que a mesma seja eternizada pela fotografia. Os fundamentos teóricos do trabalho baseiam-se em conceitos da Semiótica e da Análise do Discurso, pois estes facilitam a compreensão da estrutura...

La questione coloniale italiana dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale passò anche attraverso  il breve periodo di discussioni internazionale sulla sorte dei territori d'oltremare.
Durante i colloqui politici, l'Esercito iniziò a preparare dei piani militari di ritorno in colonia al fine di prendere il controllo del territorio dall'Amministrazione Britannica di occupazione e assumere l'eventuale amministrazione fiduciaria.
Tra i territori coloniali, la Tripolitania assunse un valore politico ed economico maggiore, tanto che la pianificazione militare arrivò fino ai dettagli tattici di impiego delle unità militari, frutto delle lezioni individuate durante il conflitto. Fu così, che un ex ufficiale coloniale, presentò un modello per agire in un territorio vasto e desertico come quello tripolitano.

La produzione di immagini a soggetto coloniale, nonché la loro messa in circolazione attraverso svariati media, fu uno tra gli strumenti più efficaci utilizzati dal fascismo per la propaganda espansionista e per l’autocelebrazione imperiale. Le fotografie, ampiamente riprodotte in volumi, riviste e cartoline, ebbero il ruolo di documentare – con pretesa di veridicità – paesaggi, ‘tipi’, usi, costumi delle colonie italiane e, in generale, dell’oltremare africano. Le creazioni artistiche – intese in senso lato – rivestirono invece, a seconda delle circostanze e degli autori, un ruolo a tratti ambiguo, di documentazione oggettiva ma anche di seduzione della fantasia e dello sguardo. È proprio questa duplicità di scopi, unita spesso a questioni di necessità, che spinse diversi artisti a utilizzare la fotografia come base per i propri lavori. Il saggio, dopo una breve riflessione introduttiva, analizza dunque alcuni casi di illustrazioni (in particolare disegni per francobolli) e opere d’arte per i quali si sono rintracciate le fonti fotografiche di ispirazione. I casi trattati si riferiscono ad alcuni lavori di autori quali Giuseppe Rondini, Carlo Celano, Nardo Pajella e Fortunato Depero. Lo scopo è quello di mettere in luce i diversi gradi di uso, manipolazione e distorsione dell’immagine fotografica nel processo di creazione artistica, proponendo inoltre una riflessione – per alcuni casi – circa la presenza di una vena grottesca che tradisce il sostrato culturale dell’epoca, segnato da una visione marcatamente eurocentrica e razzista. Il saggio rielabora un intervento tenuto nell'ambito del seminario "DECOLONIZING COLONIAL HERITAGE • DECOLONIZZARE IL PATRIMONIO - Fondi fotografici sul colonialismo italiano tra la fine del XIX secolo e il secondo conflitto mondiale" (Rovereto-TN, Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra, 8-9 giugno 2023).

Una breve riflessione introduttiva partendo dall'attualità Nel 2016 il fotografo e studioso spagnolo Joan Fontcuberta pubblicava La furia de las imágenes. Notas sobre la postfotografia, ove rifletteva sul nuovo 'statuto' della riproducibilità tecnica delle immagini, oggi smaterializzate e circolanti in rete con il passaggio dall'era analogica a quella digitale 1. Sulla riflessione relativa a questa rivoluzionaria e inarrestabile energia cinetica delle fonti visive, che si spostano ormai da un lato all'altro del globo in pochi tocchi di mouse, va a innestarsi un fenomeno sempre più presente e nel momento attuale al centro di numerose discussioni, ovvero quello dell'uso della AI (Artificial Intelligence) per la produzione di immagini-nonché testi e suoni-che manipolano, orientano e confondono l'opinione pubblica creando fake news attraverso rappresentazioni fuorvianti. A tale proposito viene in mente un caso specifico portato all'attenzione dei lettori di "La Nuova di Mestre e Venezia" lo scorso anno; qui Vera Mantengoli segnalava in un suo articolo il reportage sulla guerra in Ucraina realizzato dalla fotogiornalista veneziana Barbara Zanon: «tragedia reale, rappresentazione di fantasia: ma non si vede la differenza», recitava il sottotitolo 2. O artigo analisa a relação que o Exército brasileiro manteve com a tecnologia fotográfica no final do século XIX e início do século XX. Foram analisados os acervos fotográficos de duas campanhas militares: o da Guerra de Canudos (1896-1897) e o da Guerra do Contestado (1914-1916). Investigou-se a forma como o Exército investiu na tecnologia fotográfica para registrar os feitos militares e combater as críticas efetuadas à repressão dos dois maiores conflitos sociais da Primeira República (1889-1930). São destacados os avanços nessa tecnologia e a lógica dos discursos oficiais incorporados nas representações fotográficas. Houve um deslocamento na forma de registrar e imortalizar os feitos militares entre Canudos e o Contestado, especialmente no que diz respeito à produção e circulação de fotografias relacionadas a morte e destruição no campo de batalha. This article approaches some themes dealing with both the history of colonialism and the history of psychiatry, and the field constituted by their superposition, starting from a clinical case of which the psychiatrist Angelo Brave left a trace in his essay Temperamento paleopsicologico e psicosi di civilizzazione, presented in the section "Documents" of this DEP issue. This article tackles the intersection of gender, sexuality and race in the colonial context, the fascist instance of the bodily inscription of the colonial order through the racial laws, and the answers of the individuals to this rigid normativity. It points out the dynamics doctor-patient and the peculiarity of this case, in which the subaltern female patient can speak, while the most part of them was never given voice. In closing it analyses the diagnosis the psychiatrist proposes for this woman's existence hanging in the balance between two worlds.

O presente trabalho compreende um estudo, deflagrado por uma inquietação em relação aos conceitos e regras que definem o fotojornalismo, sobre o livro de fotografias Canudos 100 anos, de Evandro Teixeira. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa foi dividida em quatro capítulos. O primeiro faz, a partir da observação de questões históricas e conceituais, uma reflexão sobre a origem dos padrões e convenções que delineiam o gênero fotojornalismo, para, em seguida, realizar a desmontagem desses padrões. No capítulo dois, longe da classificação a qual o livro estava enquadrado, são empreendidas aproximações das fotografias de Canudos 100 anos com a obra Os Sertões, de Euclides da Cunha, e com os trabalhos fotográficos de Pierre Verger e Maurren Bisilliat, que também retrataram o tema. No capítulo três, as análises são levadas para o campo da memória e do imaginário e se debruçam especialmente sobre as imagens das figuras humanas. No quarto e último, apresenta-se um ensaio que mescla as fotografias de Canudos 100 anos rearranjadas de outra forma com trechos do texto retirados do livro e de fontes diversas.

Resumo O presente artigo ressalta a fotografi a como uma tecnologia e problematiza a sua utilização como artifício de diferenciação social e de poder no Brasil oitocentista. A grande circulação da imagem fotográfi ca, principalmente na modalidade do retrato, serviu para formar e conformar um habitus compartilhado pelas famílias abastadas. A análise aqui proposta se estrutura em duas partes principais. Em O espelho do real refl etido a fotografi a é discutida no momento de sua invenção, colocando-a como uma necessidade social e cultural da época. Em seguida, fi z um estudo comparativo de duas coleções fotográfi cas de famílias da boa sociedade com padrões econômicos diversos: os Ribeiro de Avellar, provenientes da classe senhorial rural, e os Benjamin Constant representando as camadas médias urbanas. This research aimed to understand the construction of the visual memory of the event of the struggle for land that took place in Praça da Matriz, in the city of Porto Alegre, on August 8, 1990. To do so, we sought to build series based on the analysis and interpretation of how the event was constructed, given to see and conveyed by the major regional and national commercial press. In dialogue, a series of eighty-six photographs from different institutional and private collections, entitled SINDJORS series, were analyzed. The dissertation was structured in five chapters. The first chapter is configured in the introduction, where the theoretical basis of the dissertation is presented, based on the concepts of journalistic field (Bourdieu), visuals (Menezes), public photography (Mauad), memory (Candau) and survival (Didi-Huberman). In the second chapter, an immersion was carried out in the context of the construction of the photograph produced in Brazil between the 1960s and 1990s. Emphasis was placed on the professional career of photographers, whose production of images is linked to the land issue. This route was traced to the photographers of the SINDJORS series. Then, aspects of the historical course of the rural social movements in Rio Grande do Sul (Harres), (Eckert) were presented. It was analyzed how the construction of the photographic practices (Mauad) of these professionals, dedicated to the production of images on the question of land, is related, in some aspects, to the very construction of the struggle for land. In chapters three and four, considering the pressures of the market (economic capital) and political on the field of journalism, we identified some strategies adopted by the commercial communication vehicles to report the event, which can be summarized in these points: criminalize the MST act; disqualify the political action, directing the agenda for the death of the soldier Valdeci de Abreu and decontextualizing the history of the struggle for land; and construct the narratives from the idea of " conflict". Finally, it was observed that the idea of "confrontation" was present in the relationship between the photographs and the text published in the periodicals. The photographs published in the newspapers analyzed complain of a report of denunciation of police violence, in opposition to the text that tends to value the action of the military police. In chapter five, the series of images of SINDJORS was analyzed, identifying their patterns and survivals, as well as the editions of the labor union newspapers (SINJORS and Sindibancários) and of the newspaper Sem Terra (MST). It was found that the discursive elaboration of the newspaper "Sem Terra" has similarities with the versions reported by the Jornal do SINDJORS and O Bancário. However, in "Sem Terra", there is an accentuation on the concern to insert the event of Praça da Matriz in the prism of the historical course of the struggle for land in Brazil, highlighting the violent scenario led by the governments to deal with the land issue. It can be said that the construction of the visual memories of the event are shaped by the dispute between the versions of the journalistic text, condensed in repetition and reproduction, and the visualities of photographs, based on the tension between resistance and repression, and in the survivals of images of other temporalities.

Le lettere dei combattenti della Granda durante il conflitto italo-turco 1911-12. Soldati semplici e ufficiali scrivono missive commoventi, bellicose, spontanee o circospette: nell'ingenuità della  scarsa istruzione e nello spirito colonialista di cui tutti sono imbevuti, questi documenti (inediti o editi solo sui giornali locali dell'epoca) restituiscono uno spaccato prezioso della mentalità e dei sentimenti con cui questa guerra fu vissuta.

Görüntü üretme teknolojilerinde yaşanan ilerlemeler fotoğraf tarihinde görmezden
gelemeyeceğimiz bir noktaya ulaşmış ve güncel fotoğraf yaklaşımlarına olan bakış açımızı değiştirmeye başlamıştır. Dijital fotoğraf ile yapay zekâ tarafından üretilen fotoğrafların ilişkisi son on yıldır bu bakış açısını etkilemektedir. Dijital fotoğraftan daha farklı bir konumda bulunan ve fotoğrafik içerik üretmek için kullanılan birçok programın yanında yapay zekâ teknolojilerinden birisi olan GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) Üretken Çekişmeli Ağlar, oldukça hızlı ve şaşırtıcı fotoğraflar üretebilmektedir. Post fotoğrafik süreç içerisine dahil edebileceğimiz bu teknoloji, kamerasız fotoğrafçılığa olan yakınlığı ile hem biricik hem de anonim görüntüler oluşturmaktadır. Klasik fotoğraf üretme biçimimizden farklı bir yerde bulunan GAN çalışmaları merkeziyetsiz yapısıyla Gilles Deleuze ve Félix Guattari tarafından geliştirilen ‘Rhizome’ kavramı ile yakından ilişkilidir. Yapay zeka aracılığıyla üretilen görüntüler, gerçekliğe olan yakınlığıyla başlangıcı ve sonu tahmin edilemeyen bir alanı temsil etmektedir. Bu çalışma yapay zekâ teknolojilerinin yaratmış olduğu deneysel alandan yola çıkarak kamerasız fotoğrafçılığın yapay zekâ ile kurmuş olduğu ilişkiyi ve üretim biçimlerini
açıklamayı amaçlamaktadır.

A partir do estudo de uma fotografia datada de 1947, discute-se as possibilidades metodologicas e teoricas do uso da fotografia para a analise dos processos de subjetivacao do genero masculino, realizada por meio de suas performances, o que contempla sobremaneira a composicao de uma aparencia legitimadora

O ensaio apresentado parte do recorte histórico sobre o Segundo Reinado no Brasil (1840-1889) e de uma platinotipia (fotografia) do século XIX, de D. Pedro II, feita por Insley Pacheco, uma análise iconológica sob perspectiva do historiador e crítico de arte Erwin Panofsky foi feita. As considerações contribuem para compreender de que maneira este tipo de análise ajuda na pesquisa sobre imagens históricas e como podem se desdobrar os símbolos e representações da fotografia para além do documental.

O presente trabalho parte da percepção da coexistência temporal do uso da fotografia no século XIX e das dinâmicas do trabalho, cativo e de ganho, bem como da transição para o trabalho livre, para a investigação da produção iconográficaem acervos de instituições, arquivos, publicações que abarca as trabalhadoras e trabalhadores negros urbanos no século XIX no território compreendido como Centro Antigo da cidade de Salvador. The present work starts from the perception of the temporal coexistence of the use of photography in the 19th century and the dynamics of work, captive and gain, as well as the transition to free work, for the investigation of iconographic productionin collections of institutions, archives, publicationswhich encompasses urban black workers in the 19th century in the territory understood as the Old Center of the city of Salvador.

The increasing technological advancement enabled a accelerated development in different fields of human life, as well as, interfered in the form how to use and make photography today. The photograph gradually left the family albums and has become an important composition in the art of communicating, given its ability to picture the reality moments. This article aims to observe that the many images that are placed in contact with us, need to be analyzed so that we can understand how these representations of reality, built by words and images, are being presented by certain social groups to others groups. Luciano Carneiro, de ‘O Cruzeiro’, e a consolidação do fotojornalismo no Brasil



O período seguinte à Segunda Grande Guerra foi de grande disrupção na ciência e nas tecnologias. No contexto dos produtos culturais o jornalismo impresso foi muito beneficiado com a massificação de revistas cuja missão era informar através de fotorreportagens. No Brasil,  durante os anos 1950, houve o boom desse modo de narrar histórias, notadamente através da revista semanal O Cruzeiro. E nela um jovem repórter imprimiu seu nome, Luciano Carneiro.

Resumo O presente artigo ressalta a fotografi a como uma tecnologia e problematiza a sua utilização como artifício de diferenciação social e de poder no Brasil oitocentista. A grande circulação da imagem fotográfi ca, principalmente na modalidade do retrato, serviu para formar e conformar um habitus compartilhado pelas famílias abastadas. A análise aqui proposta se estrutura em duas partes principais. Em O espelho do real refl etido a fotografi a é discutida no momento de sua invenção, colocando-a como uma necessidade social e cultural da época. Em seguida, fi z um estudo comparativo de duas coleções fotográfi cas de famílias da boa sociedade com padrões econômicos diversos: os Ribeiro de Avellar, provenientes da classe senhorial rural, e os Benjamin Constant representando as camadas médias urbanas. The aim of this work is to examine, from a multidisciplinary approach (aesthetic, historical and anthropological), images of black slaves and black wage earners made by the Azorean photographer Christiano Jr. in mid of the 1860's in Rio de Janeiro. The purpose is to emphasize their contradictory character when placed in a long-term perspective. Even without breaking with the aesthetic standards of the period, the pictures of Christiano Jr. introduce elements that represent a differentiation as they subvert certain thematic and compositional structural aspects of images of black labors, thus breaking the code of silence, concealment and disguise that characterizes the relationship between the Brazilian society and the system of slavery. The work develops in three movements. The first chapter presents a detailed analysis of the work of Christiano Jr. highlighting his career and the system of consumption and circulation of his images. The second features the traditional patterns of representation of the figure of the black working classes relating them with the pictures of Christiano Jr. The last chapter stresses a kind of fissure in the strict code of the iconographic representation of the slaves and proposes that the work of the azorean photographer be read not as a neutral document about the uses and customs of the time or only as a reiteration of a biased look, but as a record of a complex relationship between the photographer and his models as a constituent component-therefore charged with meaning-of a society that was itself grappling in an acute crisis of the slavery regime.

Este artigo procura traçar um panorama do campo da fotografia profissional no Brasil desde o primeiro governo Vargas até o final do século XX. Nas décadas de 1930 e 1940, nova leva de fotógrafos estrangeiros se mudou para o país. Alguns ocuparam postos no governo federal e construíram a imagem fotográfica da Nação. Em meados do século, a maneira de se fazer fotografias para a imprensa sofreu profunda alteração e pela primeira vez um museu brasileiro expôs fotografias. A ditadura militar interferiu decisivamente na produção da indústria cultural. Os anos de 1970 foram marcados pela transformação no perfil profissional e do status dos fotógrafos, causados principalmente pela entrada no mercado de jovens saídos das universidades. Nesta mesma década foi criada uma instituição destinada a valorizar a fotografia brasileira em todas as suas dimensões: o Núcleo de Fotografia da Fundação Nacional de Arte. This paper analyzes a group of representations imagistic transmitted through spread French postcards in the period of the Great War (1914-1918). Looking for to notice as the French combatants was represented in this media type and opposing with the soldiers' reports that struggled in the front, the research search through the method iconography/iconological developed by Panofsky (2011) and used in several works of Stancik (2009, 2017) to still notice ruptures and permanences of an social imaginary characteristic of the century XIX presents in the beginning of the century XX.

O artigo aborda pratica fotografica como parte da experiencia historica contemporânea de producao sentido social sobre o mundo visivel. Organiza-se em duas partes, nas quais, primeiramente se apresenta os debates conceituais no campo dos estudos sobre teoria fotografica; e, na sequencia, se discute a presenca da fotografia como recurso de investigacao nos estudos historicos, com base num balanco historiografico da producao historica dos anos 1990 em diante. Resumo : As relacoes, os encontros e desencontros que se desenvolvem entre as artes podem ser observados no romance de Assis Brasil, O pintor de retratos . Esse romance representa a transicao do seculo XIX para o seculo XX, com base nas transformacoes das concepcoes artisticas, especialmente pautadas na transicao das novas escolhas da sociedade. Dessa maneira, este trabalho visa destacar a importância do retrato e as mudancas nas relacoes sociais apos o advento da fotografia, e sobretudo destacar as relacoes entre a pintura e a fotografia, como tematica central do romance de Assis Brasil, O pintor de retratos. This article analyzes the journalistic clashes between O Cruzeiro and two international magazines focusing on photojournalism, Paris Match, 1951 and Life Magazine in 1961. O Cruzeiro is definitely known as a modern magazine regarding the photojournalism at the time, defending cultural and national values, and at the same time it plays a specular game with the two magazines with landmark graphics and images.

O presente artigo analisou de que forma o espaço e as relações escolares foram representadas nos retratos escolares produzidos pelo estúdio fotográfico Foto Bianchi (1913-2001), em Ponta Grossa-PR, durante sua primeira geração de fotógrafos – período correspondente aos anos entre 1913-1943. Para este momento, o que se propôs foi refletir de que forma os retratos escolares analisados pela pesquisa se apresentam enquanto artefatos da cultura material escolar, cujas representações fotográficas desempenharam funções simbólicas e materiais. Para isso, a análise se deteve nos retratos de normalistas produzidos pelo fotógrafo no espaço interno do estúdio entre os anos de 1936-1938, um pequeno corpo documental, composto por dez retratos, que suscitou a problemática acerca das poses, técnicas, usos, consumo e circulação desses retratos. Resumo: O estudo realiza levantamento dos primeiros fotógrafos que atuaram em Curitiba/PR, na segunda metade do século XIX, destacando suas condições de trabalho e as modificações operadas nos procedimentos e recursos por eles empregados. Observa-se que, naquele contexto, Curitiba se caracterizava como uma pequena vila com um ritmo de vida campesino, na qual predominaram os fotógrafos itinerantes. Somente transcorridas algumas décadas, a cidade pode contar com a presença dos primeiros estúdios que ali se instalaram de forma mais perene. É o caso daquele que foi mantido por Adolpho Volk a partir de 1881, quando, mais que simplesmente fazer retratos, tornou-se necessário que sua produção funcionasse como uma estratégia de distinção social.

Resumo Este artigo analisa fotografias de Guy Veloso pertencentes a serie Penitentes: dos Ritos de Sangue a Fascinacao do Fim do Mundo que teve inicio em 2002. Doze dessas imagens foram expostas na 29a Bienal de Sao Paulo, realizada em 2010. No processo analitico estao presentes questoes especificas da estetica fotografica e concernentes a abordagem sociopolitica. A base teorica foi desenvolvida a partir de Andre Rouille e Euclides da Cunha. Abstract: This article looks at photographs of Guy Veloso belonging to Penitents series: Blood Rites of the fascination of the End of the World which started in 2002. Twelve of these images were exhibited at the 29th Sa?o Paulo Biennial, held in 2010. In the analytical process issues are present specific photographic aesthetics and concerning the sociopolitical approach. Velloso de Castro, militar de carreira, destacado em Angola, realizou centenas de fotografias da entao provincia portuguesa, recorrendo a tecnicas fotograficas bastante elaboradas para a epoca. Tratamos, aqui, da narrativa fotografica de tres trabalhos seus, dois publicados (um livro e uma coleccao de albuns de postais) e um inedito, que completam este ano o seu primeiro centenario. O interesse etnografico do autor pelo outro que aparece retratado sob diversas formas nestes conjuntos fotograficos, levou-nos a tracar uma relacao entre a sua narrativa e o tratamento do outro nos conteudos dessa mesma narrativa. Lidando com as expectativas dos leitores metropolitanos, Velloso de Castro consegue construir uma narrativa que, retratando os costumes das populacoes autoctones, consegue, por vezes, escapar ao exotismo que transparece nos universos captados, mas nao os domina.

Artykuł dotyczy powieści La riva della vita minore włoskiego pisarza syryjskiego pochodzenia, Alessandra Spiny. Powieść przedstawia realia polityczne i społeczne Libii w latach
50. i 60. XX wieku oraz kryzys europejskiej ideologii kolonialnej, której uosobieniem jest
postać Pierre’a Dexais’go. Zarazem w książce pojawia się Gérard Conti, młody Francuz,
który odrzuca europocentryzm w celu stania się częścią społeczeństwa libijskiego. Podczas
gdy Dexais postrzega koniec imperiów kolonialnych jako upadek cywilizacji europejskiej,
celem Contiego jest stworzenie dla siebie nowej, hybrydycznej tożsamości. Tekst porusza
kwestię kryzysu idei kolonializmu, a także problematyzację tożsamości europejskiej wobec
owego kryzysu. Wreszcie podane są przykłady dwóch innych powieści, Asmara addio
Erminii Dell’Oro i Ghibli Luciany Capretti, również opisujących zmierzch włoskich kolonii.
