The eKultura project exemplifies how collaboration and technological adaptation can empower cultural heritage institutions to preserve and share their collections. Built upon the eArchiving Initiative and eARK specifications, eKultura provides a robust and secure framework for digitizing, storing, and accessing Croatia's diverse cultural heritage. The core objectives of eKultura include the establishment of a central system for the permanent preservation, access, aggregation, and search of cultural heritage materials. The project leveraged open-source software, including Goobi workflow and the RODA tool, to enhance digitization processes, quality control, and metadata management. By aligning with OAIS standards and integrating seamlessly with the Central Permanent Storage System, eKultura ensures secure, scalable, and long-term preservation. Furthermore, the eKultura portal enhances accessibility by providing a multilingual interface that allows global users to explore Croatian heritage in over 28 languages. The portal also includes features designed to enhance user engagement and interaction with cultural institutions, offering advanced search capabilities, high-resolution content viewing, and data export options. Additionally, the eKultura system functions as a national aggregator, supporting metadata transformation and data publication to Europeana. The project has yielded significant benefits, including long-term preservation of cultural assets, increased public access, and institutional empowerment. By adopting and refining existing technological solutions, establishing standardized digitization workflows, and promoting knowledge exchange, eKultura ensures that Croatian cultural heritage is preserved and made accessible for future generations. As a model of best practice, the project demonstrates how technological innovation, international standards, and strategic collaboration can drive the successful digital transformation of the cultural heritage sector.

One hundred years after the inception of the intertwined founding processes of film culture at a time of transition of the cinematographic medium, today’s film preservation practices marked by the digital transformation are now facing new challenges that will mark once again the future of material, archival and scientific film culture. Compared to the past, a new element comes into play, the sustainability of preservation strategies, technologies and practices.
As part of the SAFE – The sustainability of Italian film heritage: archival infrastructures, digital preservation, stewardship strategies project, aimed at investigating the sustainability of the preservation of Italian non-fiction and non-theatrical film heritage, the mid-term conference aims to involve the scientific and archival community in investigating the fate of such heritage at the time of its digital preservation.
This conference invites scholars, archivists, and industry professionals to explore the intersections of media sustainability, digital preservation, and archival practices within the broader context of film heritage institutions and its environmental impact.
We welcome theoretical, empirical, and case study-driven contributions from diverse disciplinary perspectives, including media studies, archival science, environmental studies, and digital humanities. Abstracts should be 300–500 words, clearly outlining the research questions and theoretical frameworks, plus a 100-word bio of the speakers.

The aim of this article is to investigate the nature of information sharing in social media about missing persons by using social media data (mostly Twitter) and conventional media coverage (media archives), adopting a platial perspective to this geographical information. By focusing on the cases of three people gone missing, we report on ways in which civil society establishes relational networks through social media to collectively support local searches and share information in rural Sweden. Geographical information systems and visualization techniques underlie the methodology of this study. Findings show that the geography of information sharing in social media about a missing person is not random, revealing a globally dispersed pattern across the country. Information sharing contains more emotional than informational content, hitting a peak of spread after a person is found deceased. This finding indicates that the value of information shared by social media as a problem-solving resource might have so far been overestimated in the process of finding missing persons. In addition, tweets show indications that voluntary organizations constitute a valuable resource in rural contexts but not without impact on the existing networks of stakeholders delivering emergency services.

“Stories of archives are always stories of phantoms, of the death or disappearance or erasure of something, the preservation of what remains, and its possible reappearance—feared by some, desired by others,” writes Thomas Keenan.

This book is about those stories and much more. Here the author uses bak.ma, a digital media archive born out of the social movements in Turkey, to guide us through a journey in which archives become sites of other kinds of stories—some of solidarity, activism, and the commons. Çelikaslan uses the concept of archives of the commons reimagining archives as dynamic spaces of commoning in which creative, autonomous platforms are generated collectively to perpetuate knowledge and sociopolitical relations grounded in solidarity and an ethics of care, not in some distant future but in the here and now.

Reconhecido maioritariamente pelo seu talento literário, Ruy Duarte de Carvalho produziu, nas décadas de 70 e 80, uma vasta e fecunda obra cinematográfica cuja originalidade e complexidade permanecem largamente por investigar. A partir da revisitação da sua filmografia, em particular da série documental Presente Angolano, Tempo Mumuíla (1979) e da ficção Nelisita (1982), bem como através da análise das reflexões encetadas pelo autor no ensaio O Camarada e a Câmara (1984), o presente artigo procura contribuir para a discussão teórica em torno das possibilidades de um encontro entre cinema e antropologia para além do filme etnográfico.

This article describes the rise of MA programmes in audio-visual archiving, preservation and presentation. It distinguishes between two key developments that are transforming the contemporary graduation education in AV heritage: digital developments that significantly impact the professional field, and new governance structures that comprise a (forced) move away from film studies as disciplinary home. It is the latter, this article argues, that poses the real threat for the future of professional education in preservation and presentation of moving images.

2.1 La démarche expérimentale des systématiciens Tout au long de sa recherche, le systématicien apprend à reconnaître les espèces à partir d'un travail de bibliographie dans les muséums, d'observations effectuées en laboratoire sur des échantillons et d'échanges d'informations avec d'autres chercheurs. Il construit progressivement un modèle de description de son domaine qu'il applique à de nouvelles observations. Les erreurs d'identification l'amènent à remettre en cause son propre modèle. Il acquiert ainsi petit à petit une intuition du domaine, qui l'élève progressivement au rang d'expert reconnu par la communauté scientifique. Ce cheminement procède par un aller-retour, une itération entre les L'approche actuelle fondée uniquement sur l'informatisation des données de la systématique, généralement à l'aide des bases de données relationnelles est insuffisante. Bien sûr, celles-ci offrent de puissants moyens pour stocker un grand nombre d'informations et y accéder par l'intermédiaire de requêtes, mais elles présentent un certain nombre de limitations, comme nous l'avons souligné dans Rousse et al. Worldwide the frequency and impacts of flooding exhibit a steep increasing trend 1. The key drivers are the world's population growth and the increase of socioeconomic activities (development) in flood-prone areas, and society's growing interdependency on flood protection and drainage infrastructure of which a significant part is of unknown or poor condition 2, 3. It is more and more recognized that flood risk management approaches should be able to respond to changes in the natural and socioeconomic environment. Moreover they should perform well under various potential futures as there is inherent uncertainty about the magnitude of the drivers of flood risk.

Collections are the heart of museums, born for anyone’s benefit. In order to ensure people to enjoy collections, museums operate as the stewards of items to preserve them for today and future generations. Due to the growing technological improvements and the advent of the Internet, collections have been made available for the audience’s benefit, both offline and online. The topic of digitization of collections and associated information is of the utmost importance inasmuch as it depicts a powerful tool for creating automated processes to manage collections for internal work purposes and disseminating culture within and beyond the museum walls. The article focuses on analyzing the websites of three prominent national museums in Romania, Bulgaria, and Serbia. These websites are examined within the broader context of the cultural institutions' activities, as they hold significant importance in the cultural infrastructure of their respective neighboring Balkan countries. A comparison table is utilized to establish evaluation criteria for the digital platforms, with a particular emphasis on content. The article extensively characterizes the sections dedicated to the main and temporary exhibitions, which play a crucial role in facilitating digital engagement with both existing and potential audiences. The chosen approaches for showcasing museum teams and collections are also scrutinized. In addition, gaps and inconsistencies are identified by comparing these websites with others in the museum domain. The evaluation of video materials and digital tours of the exhibitions adheres to the high standards set by modern digital technologies in the cultural sector. Consequently, the article concludes by formulating three recommendations aimed at enhancing the websites of the national history museums in Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia. These recommendations are intended to address the identified shortcomings and improve the overall digital experience provided by these institutions.

Amina Habchi problèmes sont accentués par la multiplicité des supports documentaires et le manque de conscience de la communauté scientifique et archivistique de la valeur informationnelle et patrimoniale du fonds d'archives audiovisuelles de l'AVFA, qui viennent aggraver une situation déjà considérée comme alarmante. Ce constat nous mène, dans le deuxième volet de notre intervention, à proposer un plan d'intervention pour améliorer les procédures de traitement du fonds à l'étude et proposer un ensemble de recommandations pour assurer son exploitabilité à long terme. Unterhalb des Radars großer Teile der Öffentlichkeit segeln seit einiger Zeit diverse Projekte in den Weiten und Untiefen des Internets, die als alternative, digitale Videotheken bezeichnet werden können. Diese Quasi-Archive sind dezentral aufgebaut und bieten Zugang zu einer beachtlichen Zahl filmhistorisch relevanter Werke. Eins dieser Projekte wurde in den Cahiers du cinéma als «schönste und geheimste Goldgrube des Internets» bezeichnet (Perrot/Poli 2014, 62). Dans cet article nous présentons le Projet d'incorporation de la compréhension orale-audiovisuelle dans les cours de lecture-compréhension inscrit au Département des Langues Modernes de la Faculté de Philosophie et des Lettres (UBA), pour la période 2014-2016. Ce projet, en cours d'exécution, consiste en une étude exploratoire dont le but est d'analyser, en termes de faisabilité et de rentabilité pédagogique, l'incorporation de la compréhension orale-audiovisuelle dans les cours de lecture-compréhension en FLE. Ce travail porte sur deux volets. Le premier, c'est l'exposé des grandes lignes du projet et, l'autre, le développement, quoique bref, d'un des points du cadre conceptuel concernant les genres.

On the Threshold of Sub(e)merging

In our presentation, we elaborate on artistic and archival forms and methods that are shaped in response to cultural and political emergencies in Turkey while questioning whether sub(e)merging as a potentiality for a new analysis would embody resistant and protest practices in contemporary Turkey.

For this reason, we focus on a range of contemporary artworks and archival footage that we believe make sub(e)merging modes, affective relationalities, and alternative networks of living and non-living forms visible and we discuss if the conditions of pessimism, vulnerability, uncertainty, and in-betweenness would entail us to reimagine new analytical frameworks and research methods in Turkey such as the emergent “Anthropocene archive” which promises to document what stays unarchivable and also artistic works that negotiate and surpass dualistic representational regimes.

Our presentation, therefore, embraces biological and ecological shifts, extinction, and socio-spatial transformations in which Sovereign power in Turkey tends to neglect human and non-human conditions and maintains its power at certain levels to produce violence. In this context, our performative presentation is an envisioning of contemporary art and archive practices collectively while attempting to reveal what is already sub(e)merged and how to bring it to the surface.

In theory, the archive is thought of in terms of consistency, maintenance, and transmission, but in practice, archives are vulnerable, contingent, and obsolete – and autonomous, activist, and community archives are the most vulnerable. Being excluded from the logic of the market and guarantee of the state, they strive to find forms of continuity and dissemination in a context of organizational instability, economic precariousness, and discontinuity of the specific agents on which they are based. This paper presentation will discuss whether these archives are forever fated to be short-term projects or if there are any potential solutions to their temporality. It will mainly focus on issues around sustainability, forms of continuity, and accessibility. Taking several audiovisual archival initiatives from Turkey as its central focus, I will approach their problems by taking into account the threat of political oppression, censorship, confiscation, and contradictions of digital preservation.

The concept of connecting information from various repositories of information has been around for quite a while, yet most online new media art archives exist independently without direct connections to each other.
Programmers working on the ISEA, SIGGRAPH and FILE online archives have been collaboratively developing a system to link information about the people and art events documented in their respective archives to each other. This initiative will extend to include the Archive of Digital Art and Ars Electronica archives, as well as other archives, once the prototype is completed. This panel will discuss the challenging process of developing interfaces, building APIs, and working with wikidata as well as the process of
analyzing, sanitizing, authenticating and modifying databases containing information about people and new media art events.

Résumé : Cet article présente un modèle en SHS de périodisation des ports (HST-PORT) et une ontologie de référence, appelée Port History Ontology (PHO) dont les classes, les propriétés et la structure sont issues du modèle HST-PORT et des sources historiques disponibles. Cette ontologie réutilise l’ontologie CIDOC CRM et DOLCE. Comme CIDOC CRM ne permet la représentation du temps (instant et intervalle) que par des chaînes de caractères, nous avons réutilisé l’ontologies "OWL-Time" pour définir les périodes de stabilité (intervalles de temps). Afin d’assurer la géolocaliation des artefacts, nous avons réutilisé l’ontologie WGS84-pos. Mots-clés : Ontologies, Histoire des sciences et techniques, périodisation des ports, CIDOC-CRM, OWLTIME.

New music' refers to experimental, exploratory music. The definition adopted for the Western Australian New Music Archive (WANMA) is that used by the Australian Music Centre to define 'composition in sound'. It includes notated composition, electroacoustic music, improvised music (including contemporary jazz), electronica, sound art, installation sound, multimedia, web and film sound, and related genres and techniques. 1 The curation of WANMA is guided by, and confronts the challenges presented by, such a broad definition, with a focus on constructing a representative canon of Western Australian new music history from 1970 to the present day. A drawback of the Western Australian music collection at the State Library of Western Australia (SLWA), and indeed of many other Australian music collections (such as that at the Australian Music Centre and UWA's Callaway Collection)

The archive poses a real problem from a semiotic point of view. The historical document refers to a context of production and reception that has been lost. Repurposed today, it has to do with a new encyclopaedia (Eco 1984), different form the one usually used to understand it. This constitutes what's usually called "intelligibility gap" (Bachimont 2009). The user of the archive probably has not the cultural referents of the past needed in order to interpret it. By analysing an example of a video repurposed on a web site, we will try to understand how to manage the relation between the present and the past. Managing an intelligibility question on the one side (how to give sense to a past document) and a philological one on the other (how to preserve an historical perspective on the past).

El trabajo tiene por objetivo ofrecer una revisión de diversas perspectivas teóricas, metodológicas y filosóficas que, desde el análisis de las operaciones sociotécnicas involucradas, han intentado establecer y repensar —sobre todo en las últimas tres décadas— las nociones de ‘archivo’ y de ‘documento de archivo’, a las que consideramos intrínsecamente vinculadas. Desde la complejidad que recubre a toda problemática centrada en el registro, la gestión y la preservación de documentos de cultura, y teniendo en cuenta que nuestro trabajo surge de la investigación sobre archivos, partimos del hecho de que estas nociones, en principio definidas por las prácticas modernas de la archivística, han sido cuestionadas a partir de la circulación de objetos digitales, sobre todo desde el cambio de siglo a esta parte, con la creciente presencia de Internet tanto en la dimensión institucional (pública o privada) como en las prácticas de sujetos individuales. Este enfoque propone un diálogo entre paradigmas y disciplinas, y se basa en la pregunta por la naturaleza de los documentos y los archivos que se gestionan en la cultura contemporánea. Preguntas que modelan en presente, y a futuro, las prácticas y reflexiones sobre la preservación, la circulación y el acceso a los bienes, acontecimientos e inscripciones producidos en todas las esferas de la vida social.

Parmi les etapes de la demarche didactique du Francais sur Objectif Specifique, declinee en milieux professionnel ou universitaire (FOU), figure celle de l’analyse linguistique et discursive des differents discours oraux et ecrits collectes sur le terrain, en entreprises ou dans les cours universitaires. Cette analyse ne conduit pas seulement a une description des phenomenes et mecanismes langagiers observables dans ces discours produits au sein de situations specialisees mais egalement a leur exploitation en vue d’une didactisation des contenus de formation.

Contemporary repertoires of protest have been adapting to digitally-oriented media environments (Tilly 2006; Hoskins 2017; Treré 2018; Merrill, Keightley, and Daphi 2020), begging the question how they will be archived for the future. Since the global wave of protests against the murder of George Floyd in 2020, the debate on archiving activism in the digital age has gained momentum, bringing activists, archivists, policy makers and scholars into new dialogue.  How to preserve the cultural production of born-digital movements, why and what should be preserved, who should do the work, for and on behalf of whom, who can claim the ownership of social movements’ legacies-in-the-making?  These are just a few of the questions that have been surfacing in recent debates on the entanglements of archiving and activism ( Flinn and Alexander 2015, Della Ratta, Dickinson, and Haugbolle 2020; Caswell 2021). Concern about the real risk of losing the traces of recent movements and their cultural production gives to these issues an added urgency.

RESUMO: Entre os anos 1971 e 1982, uma personagem mitológica da região sul de Angola marcou a etnogra-fia, a literatura e o cinema produzidos no território angolano. O estudo desta personagem chamada Nam-balisita pretende demonstrar os níveis geográfico, histórico e temporal, nos quais a personagem se situa, identificar os traços estruturalmente intactos em sua simbologia mítica e as variações que a distinguem nas formas como foi representada nas diferentes linguagens adotadas, especialmente no período que marcou o pós-independência em Angola. The importance of metadata in the process of accessing to information is outlined. The metadata schemas and standards used in cultural heritage are discussed. La structuration des connaissances est un enjeu majeur pour l'enseignement des methodes statistiques. Parallelement, l'usage croissant de ressources en ligne pose aux apprenants des problemes de reperage et d'evaluation de leur pertinence. La convergence de ces deux problematiques nous a conduits a proposer une ontologie informatique pour l'indexation des ressources pedagogiques. Nous en discutons les interets et les perspectives pour leur partage, l'etude des difficultes d'acquisition et le developpement de nouveaux dispositifs d'aide a l'apprentissage.

Les standards utilises pour decrire les ressources educatives libres (REL) sont complexes et peu utilises par les enseignants car il leur manque la description semantique des ressources, d’ou l’idee d’utiliser une ontologie. Une telle approche permet de depasser certaines limitations des normes. Elles necessitent l’articulation de deux types descriptions (Bouzeghoub, Defude, Duitama, & Lecocq, 2005; Isaac, Bourda, & Grandbastien, 2012) : le domaine de connaissances et les caracteristiques ressources educatives. Appliquer au domaine des statistiques, nous montrerons comment cette approche permet d’envisager des dispositifs d’aide aux utilisateurs, qu’ils soient enseignants, professionnels ou etudiants, qui soient cognitivement et pedagogiquement pertinents.
