About me: I am professor at Kettering University, Flint, Michigan, USA and have forty-five years of professional experience in multimedia systems, database systems, multimedia semantics, education, open access to scientific information and data and medical systems. I have M.Sc., Ph.D. and D.Sc. in Mathematics/ Computer Science from Sofia University, published 2 books, have more than 200 chapters in monographs, journal and conference peer-reviewed papers, more than 200 conference papers and seminars, more than 2000 citations, h index – 23, i10-index 41. I am serving on many database and multimedia conference program committees, and I am a member of the editorial boards of several journals. I am the Bulgarian representative in the EU OpenAIRE projects.

US-Ignite partnerships, the European commission Future Internet Program, the European Fire projects, the Global Environment for Network Innovation (GENI), and WiMAX, are presented. New technologies and protocols, such as Software-defined networking (SDN), OpenFlow, a route configuration mechanism and the constituent protocols to add redundant packet forwarding capabilities that will provide high reliability communication for critical applications, are described. The goal of the paper is to understand intricacies, and nuances of some of these techniques and show some of the possibilities of next-generation high-speed networking and their possible applications in the field of the Internet and the applications to education, libraries and museums.

The aim of this paper is to review some of the standards, connected with multimedia and their met... more The aim of this paper is to review some of the standards, connected with multimedia and their metadata. We start with MPEG family. MPEG-21 provides an open framework for multimedia delivery and consumption. MPEG-7 is a multimedia content description standard. With the Internet grow several format were proposed for media scenes description. Some of them are open standards such as: VRML1, X3D2, SMIL3, SVG4, MPEG-4 BIFS, MPEG-4, XMT, MPEG-4, LaSER, COLLADA5, published by ISO, W3C, etc. Television has become the most important mass medium. Standards such as MHEG, DAVIC, Java TV, MHP, GEM, OCAP and ACAP have been developed. Efficient video-streaming is presented. There exist a large number of standards for representing audiovisual metadata. We cover the Material Exchange Format (MXF), the Digital Picture Exchange (DPX), and the Digital Cinema Package (DCP).

Building the Innovative and Entrepreneurial University

Although researchers have explored dimensions of academic capitalism among students and faculty m... more Although researchers have explored dimensions of academic capitalism among students and faculty members, knowledge of the roles of administrators at all levels is underdeveloped in the literature. This institutional case study of a public research-extensive university examines the roles of executive and managerial administrators in bringing a strategic priority of innovation and entrepreneurship to fruition. Using an analytical framework based upon administrative academic capitalism and extended managerial capacity, the study draws upon 31 interviews with administrators, faculty, and students at the institutional case to identify five roles fulfilled by executive and managerial administrators in the facilitation of academic capitalism: building infrastructure, creating new programs, cultivating donors and raising funds, setting a vision around entrepreneurship, and changing policies. The findings show that an institutional orientation to knowledge privatization and profit taking was largely an administrator-driven project. Efforts to promote innovation and entrepreneurship engendered some conflict with faculty members, demonstrating the possible consequences of extended managerial control over processes of production in the academy.

Behind any cloud-based service there is a complex infrastructure that varies greatly depending on... more Behind any cloud-based service there is a complex infrastructure that varies greatly depending on the industry and the types of services provided. Storing, searching and finding data through deep learning and artificial intelligence is the logical and necessary way forward. In the entertainment industry for example, digital media libraries offer massive amounts of media materials to the public where the big issues are finding, accessing and recommending specific content out of enormous set of choices. One way to approach the issue is through media-descriptive metadata, which comes as plain text (synopsis), sounds (narration), images (cover shots, etc.) or short videos (trailers). This however, is the conventional way that is building even more around the problem of finding specific content easily, hence not directly solving the main issue. This is so not only because specific applications must be developed, but also because they require physical human interaction with the system by using user dependent keystrokes in most cases. This in turn makes the access and extraction of digital content cumbersome and slow. Hence a better, more personalized automatic behind the scenes approach is needed.

This symposium is the incarnation of the four Workshops on Multimedia Semantics, organized by us, and held in Sofia (Bulgaria), Varna (Bulgaria), Pisa (Italy), and Chania (Crete, Greece), and the First ACM Workshop on the Many Faces of Multimedia Semantics, held in conjunction with ACM Multimedia 2007, in Augsburg, Germany. It is a forum for the presentation of research results on leading-edge issues of multimedia semantics, including multimedia ontologies, emergent semantics, folksonomies, multimedia annotation, multimedia web mining, multimedia data integration and fusion, and many other related topics. The call for papers attracted 11 submissions from Asia, Canada, Europe, and the United States. The program committee accepted 8 papers (6 full papers and 2 short papers) that cover a variety of topics, including annotation, video semantics, ontologies, social tagging, subjective semantics, audio tools, and spatio/temporal multimedia queries. In addition, the program includes a keynote speech by Alberto del Bimbo on Learning Ontology Rules for Semantic Video Annotation. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for multimedia semantics researchers and developers.

The most of the current animation software tools are described by Richard Parent in [5]. The driving ideas behind animation in general and computer animation in particular are presented in [6]. More and more animations are available in various places on the Internet. The increasing availability of potentially interesting materials makes the search extremely difficult especially when the search is by the animation contents. This work is devoted to analyzing the syntax contents of the animations. In the paper we present the ANIMATION system-a system for animation scene and contents creation, retrieval and display. The system is based on MPEG-4 standard [3, 4]. MPEG-4 is an ISO/IEC standard developed by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group). These standard makes interactive video on CD-ROM and Digital Television possible.

In this paper we analyze some existing tools and approaches to image data modeling and we propose... more In this paper we analyze some existing tools and approaches to image data modeling and we propose an Object-Oriented Image Data (OOID) model. It can be applied on a wide variety of image collections. The model employs multiple logical representations of an image. The logical image representation can be viewed as a multiple level abstraction of the physical image view. The OOID model is based on the analysis of different image application domains such as: medical images, house furnishing design plans, electronic schema catalogues and geographical information systems. The proposed model could be used as a frame for designing and building a wide range of image database systems and can be included as a part of the MPEG-7 standard. It can be treated as an extension of the image database models [3, 4]. An example for applying the OOID model to a plant picture database is given, as well as the realization of the model in the Sofia Image Database System.
