Konrad Kuhn
I'm Associate Professor for European Ethnology at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.
After having received my Ph.D. from the University of Zurich in 2010, I got my venia docendi from the University of Basel (Habilitation in Cultural Anthropology) in 2019. My research interests include the history of knowledge of the discipline Volkskunde/European ethnology, rituals and customs, public history and cultures of commemoration as well as provenance research and restitutions practices. In an ongoing research project, we deal with the history of knowledge of "Unterhaltungsmusik" in Tirol/Austria from 1918 to 1948.
From 2012 to 2017 I was a lecturer and research assistant at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, before joining the Department of History and European Ethnology at the University of Innsbruck as an University Assistant (Postdoc). I'm Editor-in-Chief (with Sabine Eggmann) of the "Schweizerisches Archiv für Volkskunde/Archives suisses des traditions populaires (SAVk/ASTP)", one of the renowned journals of our discipline.

Reflexionen und literarischen Kurztexte kreisen um Atmosphären und Wissenspraktiken, Transformationen und geglückte Passagen, aber auch Störungen und ultimative Brüche. Stets sind die Texte getragen von einem humanistischen Ideal einer Lebenskunst als jenem Modus der Alltagsbewältigung, die vom privaten Leben bis zur gesellschaftlichen Aushandlung von Zukunftsprojekten reicht.
Depuis la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, de nombreuses Suissesses et de nombreux Suisses se sont engagés dans la coopération internationale au développement. La lutte contre la pauvreté mondiale et les discriminations sociales s’est solidement établie en tant que champ d’action des institutions politiques et de la société civile. C’est ce champ d’action qui se trouve au centre de ce livre. Ce volume s’adresse à des personnes intéressées par l’histoire et à celles qui pratiquent le travail de développement. Il montre la complexité historique de la coopération au développement: au centre de l’attention se trouvent ainsi constamment les effets pratiques – qui sont pluriels et partiellement contradictoires – de l’idée influente du «développement».
Im Zentrum des Buches steht das entwicklungspolitische Argument, dass weniger die Entwicklungshilfe ausgebaut, sondern vielmehr die wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen und Ausbeutungsverhältnisse verändert werden müssten. Die Dritte-Welt-Bewegung in der Schweiz thematisierte daher Welthunger, Fluchtgeld und Finanzplatz Schweiz, internationale Verschuldung, multilaterale Kooperation, Entwicklungshilfebudgets ebenso kritisch wie pionierhaft. Diese innenpolitische Kritik einer «entwicklungspolitischen Solidarität» beeinflusste Konfliktmuster und ideologische Konfrontationen.
Der Autor zeigt, wie der Solidaritätsbegriff im «verlorenen Jahrzehnt» der 1980er-Jahre und die Dritte-Welt-Bewegung zerfielen, dabei aber neue Formen von politischem Engagement entstehen liessen. Die Studie basiert auf Archivquellen entwicklungspolitischer Organisationen, schweizerischer Hilfswerke und politischer Gruppen und leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur aktuellen Debatte über Entwicklungspolitik, zur Rolle zivilgesellschaftlicher Bewegungen und zum Verständnis der jüngsten schweizerischen Zeitgeschichte.

Using the example of the folklorist and historian Adolf Helbok (1883–1968), a representative of racial-biological folklore-research during National Socialism, the article shows how he and his work fit into Austrian folklore studies after 1945. There were persistences of epistemological perspectives simultaneous with conceptual adaptations, for example by aligning his „genius research“ to a new national ideology of Austria and thereby making this knowledge available. Despite his dismissal from the University of Innsbruck, Helbok was also still part of a folkloristic Austrian milieu, which mainly gathered around the work for the Austrian Folklore Atlas. Until the 1960s, folklore studies
in Austria was therefore characterised in many ways by the continuities of ethnic thinking, which were present in „austrified“ knowledgeformats and associated with conservative, culture-pessimistic criticism of modernization.
