Repetitio Sententiarum, Repetitio Verborum: Kant, Hamann, and the Implications of Citation Precisely as a repetition of language, citation entails an act of speaking that is, at the same time, an act of listening, or an act of writing that also involves an act of reading. 1 Despite this conjoined effort, citational practice tends to privilege one aspect at the expense of the other, which, in turn, signals how language itself is believed to operate. The speaker or writer who assumes the role of an assured agent of language generally implements language as an instrument for communicating a thought, while the one who listens to language often regards the words themselves as the generative source of thought and concepts. Insofar as a citation is a repetition, one could specify the former case as a repetitio sententiarum (a repetition of thoughts), which presumes language to be a posteriori, and the latter as a repetitio verborum (a repetition of words), which instead presumes language to be a priori. This distinction is particularly acute in the alternative approaches that obtain in comparing the citational practices of that oddest couple of the late eighteenth century, Immanuel Kant and Johann Georg Hamann. In the starkest terms, whereas Kant reaches for language in order to transmit his thinking, Hamann abides with language as the determinant origin of the content of thought. The implications of these opposing presuppositions, however, point well beyond considerations of linguistic functions and instead strike at the very core of what generally counts as the Enlightenment, touching on and complicating fundamental questions of metaphysics, theology, and, ultimately, human nature.

John Hamilton: Rahmen, Küsten und Nachhaltigkeiten in Theodor Storms Der Schimmelreiter Überströme Wenn es Ziel des literarischen Realismus ist, die Wirklichkeit darzustellen, dann stellt Theodor Storms Novelle Der Schimmelreiter (1888) ein paradigmatisches Beispiel für diese Bewegung dar. Der Text ist nicht nur darin exemplarisch, dass er ein überlegenes Niveau an sozialer und psychologischer Wirklichkeitsnähe erreicht, sondern auch dadurch, dass er die eigentlichen Vorgänge und Begrenzungen, die jeder Darstellungsgeste eigen sind, dramatisch inszeniert. Storms Novelle legt die Sehnsüchte bloß, die Frustrationen und Opfer, die jeden Versuch, vorsprachliche Erfahrungen in sprachliche Form zu verwandeln, zwangsläufig begleiten. 1 Anhand der unvergesslichen Schilderung seines Protagonisten, Hauke Haiens, der nahezu eigenhändig den Dorfbewohnern mehr bewohnbares Land verschafft, macht Storm die überzeitliche, mythische Konfrontation des Menschen mit dem unbändigen Meer zur Allegorie für das realistische Projekt. Vermittels eines allegorischen Schemas wird Hauke Haiens hydrotechnische Arbeit mit Storms literarischen Bemühungen parallelisiert. Diese miteinander verbundenen Aufgaben sind beide geographisch, insofern sie Einschreibungen in die Erde durch technē sind und das im doppelten Sinne des Wortes: als Technik und Kunst. Genauso wie der Deichgraf dem Meer mehr ertragreiches Land für seine Nachbarn entreißt, integriert der Schriftsteller mehr Wirklichkeit für seine Leser; genauso wie das neue Land durch den sorgfältigen Deichbau gesichert wird, ist die Erzählung durch eine Reihe vielschichtiger Rahmen geschützt; und genauso wie die erworbene Siedlung von Überschwemmungen bedroht bleibt, schließt die Geschichte, um beständig zu sein, ein widerspenstiges Element in sich ein, welches das ganze Unternehmen motiviert wie aber auch gefährdet. Dieser letzte Punkt wirkt sich vernichtend auf das realistische Darstellungsprojekt aus, das ja einen Sinngehalt artikulieren will -also eine Artikulation anvisiert, die sich direkt auf das Bild der Küste bezieht, genauer auf die Linie, welche Land und Meer voneinander trennt. Es ist genau diese eingeschriebene Linie -die grammē, die jede Geographie voraussetzt -, welche der Novelle ihre unheimlichen Eigenschaften verleiht und auch die unheimliche Verschmelzung von Protagonisten und Verfasser hervorruft. 2 Es gibt unzählige Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Hauke Haien und seinem Urheber -Ähnlichkeiten, die primär durch die Figur des Schulmeisters, des Binnenerzählers, vermittelt werden. In erster Linie kennzeichnet Autor, Erzähler und Protagonisten eine zwanghafte Gesinnung; alle halten an ihren Projekten fest, sei es das Projekt Novelle, Erzählung oder auch Deich. Obwohl der 1888 publizierte Schimmelreiter die letzte Novelle ist, welche Storm, der kurz darauf einem Krebsleiden erlag, beendete, geht das Projekt auf eine langwährende Kindheitsfaszination Storms zurück: Als Kind in Husum las Storm die Geschichte eines Deichgrafen, der sich zu Pferde in einen reißenden Strom stürzte; es hieß, dass man sein Gespenst noch immer dann auf Patrouille sehen könne, wenn ein heftiges Gewitter den Koog gefährde. Bereits 1843 nahm Storm Bezug auf diese Erzählung wie auch auf seine Suche nach jener Publikation, die sein kindliches Interesse gefesselt hatte. 2 Zu dieser Zeit begann er, Geschichten zu sammeln, die am Ende zusammen in einer von Storm und Karl Müllenhoff herausgegebenen Reihe erschienen: Märchen, Sagen und Lieder der Herzogthümer Schleswig, Holstein und Lautenburg. Storm sammelte zudem Spukgeschichten für einen weiteren geplanten Band, welcher der Sammlung Am Kamin (1862) beigefügt werden sollte. So liegt es nahe, dass seine beharrliche Arbeit an der lokalen Überlieferung auch Teil seiner Suche nach der gedruckten Fassung der Deichgeschichte wurde, die ihn als Kind bezauberte.

In the prefatory remarks to his Rettungen des Horaz (Vindications of Horace, 1754), Lessing elucidates his approach to classical antiquity by means of an elaborate analogy: 'Ich selbst kann mir keine angenehmere Beschä ftigung machen, als die Namen berü hmter Mä nner zu mustern, ihr Recht auf die Ewigkeit zu untersuchen, unverdiente Flecken ihnen abzuwischen, die falschen Verkleisterungen ihrer Schwä chen aufzulö sen, kurz alles das im moralischen Verstande zu tun, was derjenige, dem die Aufsicht ü ber einen Bildersaal anvertrauet ist, physisch verrichtet.' 1 It should come as no surprise that, in composing an essay on Horace, the twenty-three-year-old scholar would modify and deploy one of the poet's most influential analogies: 'Ut pictura poesis'. On the basis of this timehonoured maxim, salvaging a poet's name comes to be likened to restoring an old painting; supervising a literary tradition is comparable to overseeing a picture gallery. What is less expected is Lessing's particular usage: rather than revert to the Ars poetica dictum as a way of engaging in the sister-arts debate, rather than explicating the phrase's import or assessing its truth value, he applies it to the needs of the present, appropriating and adopting it in order to characterise his own critical practice. Whereas others might invoke the Horatian 'ut pictura poesis' to uphold the fundamental similarity of the arts, Lessing exploits it to distinguish his analytical tactics. With rhetorical but no less selfdirected legerdemain he transmutes the pictura into curatorship and poesis into criticism. A prescription for a poet becomes a description for a reader. Without delving too far into the validity and implications of this recalibration, it is sufficient to note that Lessing perpetuates the tradition of 'ut pictura poesis' by interrupting it, by redirecting its course so as to make it articulate his specific method in the present. In 1915, at the urging of the editors of the psychoanalytic journal Imago, Freud composed his " Timely Thoughts on War and Death, " in which he offers some reflections on the failures of enlightened civilization and the consequent change in general attitudes toward death. Whereas, before this devastating war, it might have been simpler to evade any serious consideration of our own passing away—to " shelve " death for another day, to postpone it into the vague future—today, in 1915, given the massive scope and cruelty of the Great War, we are compelled to face death head-on: " Death can no longer be denied; one must believe in it. " 1 From a psychoanalytical perspective, Freud goes on to argue, the present undeniable nature of death is hardly detrimental: on the contrary, it allows life to become significant again by the very reason that its mortality is fully acknowledged. On the one hand, to experience death concretely includes the stark recognition of one's own possible demise, which can arrive at any moment. Yet, on the other hand, to be conscious of this imminence implies that one is still alive, that one has survived—that one's life has been preserved, at least for now. In denying death, in shunting off infinitely for later consideration, one robs oneself from the opportunity to believe in self-preservation.

The discovery of a perfectly preserved corpse in the mines of Falun instigated a series of literary elaborations from the 18th to the 20th century. In focusing on E. T. A. Hoffmann's rendering, the present essay explores the implicit relationship between persons and things-a relationship that is dynamically shared and therefore less strictly dichotomous� This confusion of animate beings and inanimate things underwrites a conception of life itself, namely as that which resists the fatal reassertion of the difference between the organic and the inorganic� Whereas legal and moral theories have long operated on the premise that human beings are not things, anthropological and psychoanalytic studies continue to demonstrate that this particular distinction, however obvious or incontestable it may appear from a commonsensical perspective, does not necessarily hold for imagined and affective experiences. A broad array of societal practices and rituals correspond to individual cases of uncanniness and fetishism, insofar as they unwork the dichotomy between the animate and the inanimate, whether by endowing material objects with subjective agency or by assessing the human, physical body as a lifeless res extensa. Regarding the latter, it bears noting that phenomenological descriptions, from Edmund Husserl onward, consistently view the human body directly on that vague threshold between internal consciousness and external object, as that which fails to appear as entirely coincident either with personal subjectivity or with the world of things. 1 My body is neither immanently internal to my consciousness nor is it merely an external, transcendent object in the environment.
