Urban Ambiances

Wir leben in Klangwelten, die unser Erleben einer lebendigen Wirklichkeit prägen. Wir suchen nach außeralltäglichen Klangerlebnissen in aufwändig inszenierten Spiel-Räumen. Diese Spiel-Räume sind Räume der erlebten Interaktion, es sind fremde Räume, in denen wir zu uns selbst finden wollen und die als Heterotopien Zerstreuung vom Gewöhnlichen versprechen. Die in diesem Buch vorgenommene phänomenologische Untersuchung beschreibt die Ästhetisierung des Lebens anhand der Klangräume der Erlebnisgesellschaft. Es ist eine Aufforderung zum kritischen Hinhören und ein Plädoyer für die Planungsrelevanz klanggeographischer Lebenswirklichkeiten.

The book is a phenomenological study of the sonorous dimension of ludic spaces. Drawing mainly on introspection, the study approaches various heterotopias like theme parks, stadia, protest marches, rock concerts and religious places through listening. The author explores a broad range of phenomenological literature on sound and space, including conceptual works on atmospheres.

This paper elaborates a general theory of scenes as multi-dimensional complexes of
meaning embedded in material, local practices. It outlines techniques for measuring
scenes empirically and shows how certain types of scenes provide environments in
which new social movement (NSM) organizations (like human rights and
environmental groups) tend to thrive. However universal and cosmopolitan the
10 content of NSM goals, they appear to get much of their energy and support from
the qualities that inhere in concrete local contexts.

Comprendre le phénomène de la provocation ne permet pas seulement de se pencher sur un registre de communication qu'affectionne tout particulièrement l'adolescent, cela questionne plus généralement un espace d'expression qui vient s'incarner sur un domaine public en cherchant à briser ses structures les plus conventionnelles. Il y a certes, à travers la provocation, quelque chose qui touche au refus du sérieux et d'une forme trop sévère de responsabilité, mais il y aussi quelque chose de plus fondamental et qui provient d'un désir de manifester avec un certain retentissement une différence ou une rupture, donc d'éprouver le domaine public à la limite de ce qu'il est censé contenir et produire. Les formes de la provocation, chez les adolescents, ont bien souvent deux choses en vue : émousser les arêtes conventionnelles du domaine public et limiter la souveraineté de l'adulte en cherchant à déstabiliser son autorité naturelle. Par exemple, l'irrévérence cherche à rompre avec les convenances sociales tout en voulant rabaisser celui qu'elle vise 1 . Parler d'une autorité naturelle de l'adulte sur le domaine public suppose qu'il représente en un sens la condition incarnée des attendus normatifs de ce dernier. Son « action comme expression » (Taylor, 1997) est génératrice d'impressions normatives (de grandeur publique et de maturité individuelle -Breviglieri, 2008) et manifeste certains attendus relatifs au fonctionnement normal du domaine public. D'une certaine manière, l'adulte a pris possession du domaine public, il y campe la figure de l'autochtone, alors que l'adolescent y représente le nouveau venu. En suscitant les réactions de l'adulte qu'il aperçoit comme le garant et le dépositaire d'un certain ordre moral, le provocateur ne fait pas qu'ébranler la fragilité de la condition humaine de ce premier (et de sa prétendue souveraineté), il impose une épreuve de finitude au domaine public qui peut, à son tour, révéler certains traits et pour permettre aux potentialités humaines de s'épanouir et d'être publiquement tenues pour dignes de respect. Le soi circule alors entre le plan politique et moral, dont les institutions sont un témoignage historique, et le plan pratique, où les capacités reconnues témoignent à leur tour de ce qui est rendu historiquement visible et légitime par les institutions. Only by starting new conversations can we develop further contemporary insights that will affect how we move through the world. Crowding in public places and the subsequent degradation of the high quality of urban atmospheres leads to an increase in people's aggressive attitudes. The consequences of these three variables on people's dissatisfaction have become apparent and can be monitored through the following five phenomena of urban atmospheres: aesthetic, affective, attributes, architectural quality, and behavioural attitudes. The five above-mentioned phenomena, together with nine situations that arise from the impacts of the urban atmospheres, help to create an integrated conceptual framework. By using this framework, this paper aims to present an anti-crowding action plan in public places based on revelations of people's moods, attitudes, and satisfaction. This article classifies descriptive and exploratory studies, which depend on evidence-based practice. It searches in theoretical literature thoroughly, testing parameters of reality, to provide the urban designer with guidelines related to the components which affect crowding. Online surveys between experts from different cities around the world reveal the existence and extent of this conflict in sixteen global cities. The key finding was that urban atmospheres as a tool for decreasing feelings of dissatisfaction due to crowding that enhances people's satisfaction. The results also show that this enhancement is based on atmospheric urban design dimensions. Ultimately, this article concludes with an action plan and four lessons learned, help in providing a proper human mood in public places for reducing negative attitudes relating to atmosphere and crowding. Further studies should focus on the real cooperation between the urban designer and experts in other disciplines.

Dans ce texte nous présentons quelques résultats d'une recherche devélopée dans le quadre d'un projet de coopération international dont le but a été ce de promouvoir une discussion interdisciplinaire sur la notion d'ambiance urbaine, à partir d'une étude de terrain réalisé dans l'espace public de cinque villes : Paris, Bonn, Varsovie, Tunis et São Paulo. L'équipe a été constituée par des spécialistes des domaines de l'architecture, l'urbanisme, la sociologie, la géographie, la psychologie environnementale, la santé publique et les études du langage-plus spécifiquement l'analyse du discours (désormais A.D.). Nous proposons de discuter premièrement quelques rapports pouvant être établis, du point de vue épistémologique, entre la phénoménologie qui soutient l'approche des ambiances dans le champ des études urbaines et le dispositif de l'A.D., pour ébaucher ensuite quelques rapprochements théoriques et conceptuels que l'analyse de notre corpus permettra d'éclaircir. Nous partirons, en termes analytiques, de l'opposition public-privé, en tant que distinction historique donnant une configuration particulière à l'espace produit et aux formes de sociabilité établies dans la dite tradition occidentale. L'analyse à travers la notion de mémoire discursive de la manière dont cette opposition opère dans l'espace étudié, déterminant la perception du mouvement, pourra contribuer à comprendre ce qui est commun et ce qui est spécifique dans les manières d'habiter caractéristiques des villes brésiliennes quand elles sont confrontées aux autres réalités urbaines étudiées dans cette recherche.

Abstract This text presents elements for a first approach of the notion of urban ambiance from the perspective of discourse analysis (henceforth DA), more specifically of the area of urban knowledge and language, based on a study on the public space of the city of São Paulo. Such research was part of a wider international cooperation project that gathered teams from five countries (France, Germany, Poland, Tunisia, and Brazil) to promote a discussion of this notion from the standpoint of different disciplines (architecture, city planning, sociology, geography, environmental psychology, public health, and language studies), grounded on the analysis of the reality Paris, Bonn, Warsaw, Tunis, and São Paulo. We first propose some relations that can be established, from the epistemological point of view, between the phenomenology that supports an approach of ambiances in the field of urban studies and the device of DA to outline some theoretical and conceptual approximations that the analysis of our corpus will clarify. In analytical terms, we will call on the public/private opposition as the historical distinction that has given their particular configuration to the space produced and to the forms of sociability established in the so-called Western tradition. Through the notion of discursive memory, analyzing how such opposition operates in the space studied to determine the perception of movement could help us discern what is common and what is specific in the ways to inhabit characteristic of Brazilian cities as compared with the other urban realities studied in this research.

While the last years the discussion on urban commons is becoming increasingly popular among urban scholars there have been few attempts to think it together with the notion of ambiance. During the current rising tide of urban revolts, the rebels do not just claim the urban space from the sovereign power but they occupy and tend to transform it to common space. In parallel, neoliberal urban policies tend to appropriate both the city ambiance and the common space, through gentrification policies. Consequently the discourse on common space has to be reconsidered and to be connected with the right to ambiance, as the latter is becoming the hybrid arena of cultural, gender, political and social urban conflicts.

Chaque entité urbaine, chaque quartier, chaque rue, chaque immeuble a une histoire irréductible et une identité culturelle. Cette identité est perçue et mise en valeur par le cinéma. Révélateur des propriétés urbaines, le cinéma, qu’il soit de fiction ou documentaire, nous aide à voir et à penser la ville. Dans le même temps, notre culture cinématographique modifie notre perception de la ville et influe sur notre design de l’urbain.

The paper discusses the materialities of crowds in distinction to crowd semantics. It contributes to an understanding of the relation between atmospheres/ambiances and the spaces of protesting crowds. It will be argued that the relation has two sides. First, techno‐ambiental interventions represent a form of crowd engineering and manipulation. Second, affective atmospheres play an important role within the political spaces of the crowd and facilitate the emergence, diffusion, and stabilisation of protest movements. By drawing on historical and contemporary accounts of crowds, the phenomenologies of Canetti and Schmitz will be combined and meaningful implications for crowd‐related research will be addressed.

This contribution contains the results of research funded by France’s National Research Agency (ANR) on walking in towns. Research focussed on two cities: Geneva (Switzerland) and Grenoble (France). Starting from a simple question – what prompts us to walk in town? – and an innovative methodological protocol we call the three-person walk – the author queries the implicit relations between the act of walking and atmospheres. How and to what extent do architectural and urban atmospheres affect our decisions when walking in town and influence a pedestrian’s gait? By constituting two lexicons – one describing sensory configurations that are more or less favourable to walking, the other describing the types of relation possible between pedestrians and the city – the author makes two contributions to the debate on urban walking: first that there are many ways of walking; and secondly that we adapt our gait to suit – it is perhaps even shaped by – architectural and urban atmospheres.

This article proposes an ethno-phenomenographic record combining writing and drawing. It examines a few contemporary atmospheres of the city of Berlin. We describe a selection of specific situations from the angle of sensorial experience and contextualize them with sociological, geographical and historical elements. Tackling some atmospheres characteristic of a city at a certain period of its history is not the same as trying to grasp the ways of living in it; therefore, our approach is neither sociological nor geographical per se. Elaborating on four specific cases and reflecting from our own perspectives, we will examine the hypothesis of a fragmentation of Berlin’s atmospheres, exploring the ambivalent meanings of such assessment. The method is ethnographic: we base our descriptions on direct observation and we confront our respective experiences in places physically circumscribed by architecture and urban forms, interspersed with multiple presences and interactions during the observed time sequences. The overall objective is also cooperative and interdisciplinary: the sharing of our own points of view and perceptions through drawing, speaking and writing as processes of building an account of urban phenomena, without erasing differences in perspective. Through this very partial selection of seemingly representative atmospheres over one Berlin summer, we sketch a nuanced portrait of the city that does not exclude criticism.

Cet article, en combinant l’écriture et le dessin, s’intéresse aux atmosphères contemporaines de la ville de Berlin. Sans prétendre les saisir toutes, nous décrivons une sélection de situations sous l’angle de l’expérience sensorielle en les contextualisant avec des éléments sociologiques, géographiques et historiques. Aborder des atmosphères caractéristiques d’une ville à une certaine période de son histoire, ce n’est pas essayer d’en saisir les modes de vie : notre approche n’est donc ni sociologique ni géographique à proprement parler. À partir de quatre exemples concrets et limités, nous examinons plutôt l’hypothèse d’une fragmentation des atmosphères berlinoises, en explorant les significations ambivalentes d’une telle évaluation. La méthode est ethnographique : nos descriptions sont fondées sur l’observation directe et la confrontation de nos expériences respectives dans des lieux physiquement circonscrits par l’architecture et les formes urbaines, entrecoupés de multiples présences et interactions au cours des séquences observées. L’objectif est aussi coopératif et interdisciplinaire : le partage de nos points de vue et de nos perceptions, sans effacer les différences de perspective, enrichit mutuellement nos regards sur cette ville. Avec cette sélection très partielle d’atmosphères représentatives au cours d’un été berlinois, nous esquissons un portrait nuancé de la ville, qui n’exclut pas la critique.

A travers une approche interdisciplinaire, cet article s'intéresse aux fêtes étatiques et à leur mise en espace dans la capitale de la République populaire de Chine. Après sa prise du pouvoir en 1949, le Parti communiste chinois s'est attelé à une redéfinition de l'ordre temporel en instaurant les fêtes du Premier mai (fête du travail) et du Premier octobre (fête nationale). Si, durant la période maoïste, ces temporalités donnaient lieu à des célébrations de masse dans les lieux emblématiques de la ville – sur la place Tian'anmen et dans les parcs –, le tournant de la Réforme (1978) a entraîné des transformations dans les modes de spatialisation de la fête et dans les modalités d'expérience de celle-ci par les citadins. Dans ce contexte où le pouvoir politique cesse de coordonner les expériences des citadins vers ces événements, les performances de retraités dans les parcs de la ville ces jours-là méritent une attention toute particulière. Issus des générations qui ont vécu la Révolution culturelle (1966-1976) puis le passage à la Réforme, leur expérience de ces temporalités a largement été marquée par la théâtralité propre à la culture maoïste. En m'appuyant sur des données ethnographiques récentes, je montrerai comment les retraités contribuent à redonner aux lieux et aux temps leur sensorialité festive, tout en se réappropriant à leur fin ces temporalités symboliques du pouvoir. Routinières et légitimes les autres jours de l'année, ces présences sont néanmoins contestées durant les congés d'octobre et de mai. Ces dissensions ne donnent pas lieu à des formes ouvertes de contestation, mais témoignent de perceptions divergentes quant aux modes légitimes d'être en public par temps de fête.

Focused on different sound milieux in India, this paper examines public sites (residential areas, bus stations, Hindu temples, markets, etc.) as spaces for social interactions, cultivating different attention modalities and shaping specific social imaginaries. The ethnography is based on the study of ritual sound worlds (and public callings for praying), sonic tactics of merchants, techniques of distortion, sonic communication, and other manners to attribute to these sites a cultural identity as well as for users to share a community. Ambient sounds occupy several dimensions of daily life as well as political relationships. This paper is an introductory approach to the study of ambient sounds in their socio-cultural context of production and reception.

Le récent film d’Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Cemetery of Splendour, 2015, 122 min.) nous propose une expérience singulière : celle de l’indécision du voir. Indécision d’abord portée par la trame narrative, indécision aussi face au statut des images, indécision encore liée au fait que les objets de perception s’effacent ici au profit de l’arrière-plan. En s’intéressant à trois déclinaisons de ce dernier phénomène singulier – 1. Quand le fond cinématographique prend consistance ; 2. Quand l’atmosphère teinte l’expérience ; 3. Quand les immatérialités s’expriment – il s’agira dans ce texte de s’attacher aux manières ténues et diffuses au travers desquelles le film permet de révéler le potentiel sensible d’un lieu et tenir ainsi la promesse du cinéma.

ABSTRACT:
Against the Hegemony of Art: the Everyday Aesthetics of the Futurists

One of the most significant aspects of Futurism lies in its fierce rebellion against the highbrow art of the past. Strong in their polemical tones, futurists proclaimed a new aesthetics focusing on the moving body and its multi-sensory experience in the surrounding environment. In order to delve deeper into this aesthetic viewpoint, the so-called “ambientazioni futuriste” (futurist ambiances) will be investigated here. These mark the key encounter between futuristic creativity and everyday space both public and private, domestic and urban. Furthermore they bear testimony to the futurists’ pioneering role in promoting an understanding of lived space echoed, surprisingly, by contemporary philosophical debates on the notions of “ambiance” and “atmosphere”.

Italian Abstract:
Uno degli aspetti più significativi del Futurismo è la violenta ribellione contro l’arte aulica del passato. Tale polemica si traduce nella proclamazione di una nuova estetica incentrata sul corpo in movimento e sulle sue relazioni polisensoriali con l’ambiente circostante. Per mettere a fuoco questa prospettiva estetica si prenderanno in considerazione le cosiddette “ambientazioni futuriste”. Esse segnano il momento cruciale in cui la creatività futurista si allarga dall’arte allo spazio quotidiano sia pubblico sia privato, sia domestico sia urbano. Inoltre le ambientazioni attestano il ruolo pionieristico che i futuristi hanno avuto nell’ avviare una riflessione sullo spazio vissuto che mostra sorprendenti assonanze con il dibattito filosofico contemporaneo sui concetti di “ambiance” e di “atmosfera”.

How is it possible to take into account the architectural and urban complexity, which encompasses multiple issues, from technical ones to social or sensory ones, within an integrated research process? How is it possible to combine multiple disciplinary approaches (cultural, social, environmental, urban, and design) and scales (from the body one to the district or the city ones) with a single representation means? And finally, what kind of method can address these complex problems and however remaining “thrifty”? In this paper, we will describe a recent exploratory research work that intended to address all these issues at once. The main result consists in proposing an integrated methodology for analysis and representation. In our view, considering together these two domains is a way to take into account multiple research fields without having a more influential one, by keeping strong ties between field observation and results construction. In the end, graphic representation appears to be not only a means (for describing, understanding, planning and so on), but also a proper result to the architectural and urban research realm.

Las propuestas de Letristas y Situacionistas sobre lo urbano fueron claves a partir de la fecha de su formulación a mediados del siglo XX y han tenido una importancia capital para entender las productivas relaciones entre arte y ciudad. Numerosos artistas y académicos se han inspirado en el proyecto Letrista y Situacionista, y han trabajado a partir de conceptos como el de "situación construida", "unidad de ambiente", "urbanismo unitario", "deriva" o "détournement", a sus necesidades o, simplemente, dándoles nuevos desarrollos y llevándolos a lugares insospechados por sus inspiradores. Aunque gran parte del pensamiento Letrista y Situacionista sobre lo urbano puede parecer aún vigente, visto en la actualidad presenta una gran cantidad de inconsistencias, limitaciones y contradicciones. Por esta razón, lo que pretendo con este texto es poner al día algunas de las ideas y conceptos Letristas y Situacionistas sobre lo urbano, especialmente las nociones de "situación construida" y de "unidad de ambiente", a partir de la noción de atmósfera, un concepto proveniente del campo de la fenomenología que en los últimos años ha dado frutos muy interesantes en distintas disciplinas de las ciencias sociales y humanas. / The proposals of Letterists and Situationists on the urban were key from the date of its formulation in the middle of the 20th century and have been of paramount importance in understanding the productive relations between art and the city. Many artists and academics have been inspired by the Letterist and Situationist project, and have worked from concepts such as “built situation”, “ambiance unit”, “unitary urbanism”, “drift” or “détournement”, following them more or less faithfully, adapting them to their needs or, simply, giving them new developments and taking them to unsuspected places by their inspirers. Although much of the letterist and situationist thinking about the urban may still seem current, seen today it presents a great number of inconsistencies, limitations and contradictions. For this reason, what I intend with this text is to update some of the Letterist and Situationist ideas and concepts on the urban, specially the notions “constructed situation” and “ambiance unit” from the notion of atmosphere, 􏰐 􏰒􏰇􏰅􏰒􏰌􏰑􏰎 􏰓􏰔in recent years has borne fruit very interesting in different disciplines of the social and human sciences.

Developed within the framework of a French interdisciplinary research program and a design studio Master’s program of the Grenoble School of Architecture’s entitled Architecture, Cultures of the Senses and the Environment, we have explored the notion of the “Urban Section” as a meeting-point between global environmental issues and situated, atmospheric qualities of space, as experienced through spatial practices. This initial idea was to develop the capacity of the urban section as a mode of representation allowing for the articulation of components of the urban milieu that are almost always considered separately from one another; built objects, the sensory realm and social practices. It was developed in the form of an exploratory, applied approach concerning specific environmental preoccupations; rising summer temperatures in the city of Grenoble (2007- 2010) and the handling of solid waste in the city of Sao Paolo (2009-2010).

In recent years, the notion of ‘smartness’ as it relates to the urban environment, the incorporation of smart technologies in urban places, and the associated impact on urban forms and civic life has become one of the widely acknowledged and growing challenges in urban design and planning and design.Within the contemporary body of knowledge, which pertains to civic design at different scales from small urban places to smart cities, scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds started to discuss the profound implications of the use of new technologies (Abusaada, Vellguth, & Elshater, 2019). This is coupled with continuous attempts are made to understand the sensory and perceptual experiences of users within the urban environment in various contexts (Abusaada, 2020; Salama & Azzali, 2015;Salama, Remali, & MacLean, 2017). This provides opportunities to develop a contemporary discourse that aims at understanding the overarching idea of ambiance within the public realm, especially when having technologies in users’ hands (McKenna, 2019).

Dans « L’Éclipse » (1962), de Michelangelo Antonioni, la ville par excellence – Rome – est émiettée par l’usage délibéré et critique d’un cinéma atmosphérique. Cet usage est délibéré en ce qu’il met en œuvre une suspension des modes narratifs conventionnels pour exposer des séquences où la durée et la teneur d’atmosphères particulières prennent le pas sur l’intrigue, l’action et les dialogues. Il est aussi critique, en ce qu’il incite le spectateur à s’interroger sur l’indétermination des situations urbaines traversées, loin des modes de représentation hérités des villes et des paysages urbains. L’emprise des atmosphères produit un effet de soustraction, de pesanteur et de « vide » – que les commentateurs n’ont cessé de relever. Mais pourquoi ces ruptures spatiales et temporelles, ce refus de la symphonie dans la figuration des espaces urbains ? À quoi bon mettre à l’épreuve le spectateur par une anti-symphonie urbaine, sinon pour lui suggérer des voies alternatives pour son imagination et sa perception, dans ses propres lieux de vie ? L’émiettement délibéré de Rome dans « L’Éclipse » contribue à une tentative d’émancipation du regard citadin, où la promesse d’une libération des sens pourrait l’emporter sur la perte des émotions héritées.
