Tourism and rural communities

Indonesia has a natural tourist attraction in the form of 54 national parks spread across regencies and cities, with an area of 16,304,707.13 hectares, featuring a diversity of ecosystems, high mountains, lowlands, savannahs to wetlands, and waters. However, the appeal of natural tourism does not necessarily contribute to the performance of national tourism, hence studies need to support of increase in tourist arrivals to national parks, one of which is to study tourism competitiveness in areas that have national parks in Indonesia. This research aims to develop a model of tourism competitiveness management in areas that have national parks in Indonesia. The theory underlying this research is the theory of tourism competitiveness through the approach of the competitiveness index of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, Indicators for Measuring Competitiveness in Tourism, and Competitiveness Monitor. The research design uses 20 competitiveness factors, where data collection techniques utilize data that has been available at both government and non-government institutions and the data collection method uses library research. The data were analysed by using the dynamic model method. The results of the study found that tourist arrivals significantly correlated simultaneously with the factor of tourism competitiveness of the districts and cities that have national parks, tourist arrival, revenue tourism, and conservation in zona utility of national park in Indonesia. It is proposed that local governments, national parks management and other interested parties make policy innovations to optimize the factors of tourism competitiveness in their regions to support or increase in the number of tourist visits in national parks.

Water resource conservation is a required activity to do in in Regunung Village, Tengaran Subdistrict, Semarang District because this area is potentially dried and has often experienced the lack of clean water even though the water resource conservation is vegetatively conducted. The resecarh is conducted from June to August 2014. The purpose of this research is to analyze the strategy of water resource conservation in Regunung Village by analyze the social-economy condition and physical condition. The method used to gain data is obeservation and direct measuring including vegetation analysis, the data analysis of the citra condition of the changing of the land; the crossed tabulation analysis and Marcov Chain for the projection of the cahinging of the land use; the technique of interview using questioners to know the participation of community; the secondary data analysis, FGD to determine the strategy of water resource conservation with SWOT analysis. The population of this research is the people of Regunung Village. Respondent is purposively determined by the number of respondent based on Slovin formula, while the FGD informant is purposively determined. The result of the research shows that the condition of Regunung Village is located at discharged area CAT Salatiga with the various level of elevation and the type of soil is latosol. The changing of the use of land happening since 1991 -2014. The vegetation condition shows that the planting method used in Regunung Village is Agroforestry. The index of diversity for three in Regunung Village is at the low level (0,8). The result of the social-economy condition research shows that the majority people's income is less than Rp. 1.000.000,00 and the level of participation is on placation level. The Water Resource Conservation Strategy suggested is the diversification strategy.

This study investigates the influence of tourist experiences and service quality on tourist retention behavior, with tourist satisfaction acting as a mediating variable, in the context of artificial tourist destinations in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative causal research design, data were collected from 156 tourists through structured questionnaires and analyzed using SmartPLS. The findings reveal that both tourist experiences and service quality significantly impact tourist satisfaction and, in turn, positively affect tourist retention behavior. The key dimensions of tourist experien celocal culture, psychological refreshment, and knowledge along with the five SERVQUAL dimensions tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy play crucial roles in shaping tourists' perceptions and loyalty. The study highlights that service quality has the strongest direct influence on tourist satisfaction and subsequent retention behavior. These insights offer both theoretical contributions to consumer behavior and tourism loyalty literature and practical implications for destination managers. By enhancing service standards and curating meaningful experiences, tourism stakeholders can improve visitor satisfaction, stimulate return visits, and foster long-term sustainable tourism.

Nepal Van Java is a tourism attraction that offers the beauty of local residences in Mount Sumbing slope located in Dusun Butuh, Magelang. According to a simple calculation of average visits up to a thousand visitors in one day, Nepal Van Java has a high visitors number according to a simple estimate of average visits. The social life of natural spaces has changed tremendously with the advent of a liberal economy in postsocialist Poland. Dozens of new national parks and nature preserves rebranded land and people thought of as backwards into forward-thinking ecological communities whose former peasant agricultural practices lay at the core of preserving rare nature. New nature preserves also set up cultural expectations for the meaning of community. Polish nature activists, a loosely bound group of NGO employees, artists, biologists, journalists, photographers, teachers and others, believed that ecological projects within new national parks could unite people around a common ideal to form more civically-minded communities than in the past. Within the same time frame of the last 20 years, a new democratic system offered Poles the hope that historical truth could be brought to light. This paper examines the way a suppressed historical event has undergone a transformation in tandem with changing ideas of nature and community in northeastern Poland. The natural and cultural space that I write of is the Biebrza Wetland, in northeast Poland, established in 1993. The expansive peat bog, the biggest primary marsh of its type in Central Europe, measures nearly 600 square km, and has been used as a source of village resources for hundreds of years. 1 The park borders villages with traumatic histories of Polish on Jewish violence during the Second World War, brought to light by the Princeton scholar, Jan Gross in his 2001 publication, Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, a book that sent shock waves through the Polish national consciousness for implicating Poles in the Holocaust, and a book that triggered local elisions in regards to the new national park, including the village Stoczek"s non-involvement in ecological projects. This paper theorizes how the reassignment of "backward" land and people into a "progressive" project of nature protection teases out ecological gaps; that is, how promoting the marsh and rural people as ecological community-based figures tacitly omits the violence Gross uncovered and by doing so draws more attention to it via discourses about ecology and community. I write about these experiences and findings on the basis of doctoral research over 15 months from January 2005 to June 2007. In living and traveling in northeast Poland I looked at the way the communist and peasant pasts complicate social relations in new national parks. The peasant and communist pasts in Poland are rich with historical detail, but to abbreviate for this article, it is important to note that farming was never successfully collectivized during the 45 years of state socialism in Poland, leaving a legacy of millions of small farms, most measuring no more than a few hectares. El presente estudio se centra en la propuesta de un Plan de Formación en turismo agroecológico, diseñado con un enfoque teórico-pedagógico y participativo, dirigido al empoderamiento de las mujeres de la E.P.S.I.C. Cabañas Mamá Rosa, ubicada en el Municipio Santo Marquina del Estado Mérida. La investigación, enmarcada en el contexto del turismo agroecológico como herramienta para el desarrollo rural sostenible, reconoce la importancia de la capacitación y la gestión del conocimiento para fortalecer las capacidades de las comunidades locales. Metodológicamente, se adoptó un enfoque sociocrítico y participativo, empleando la Investigación-Acción Participativa para involucrar activamente a las Madres del Barrio en el proceso de formación. Los resultados obtenidos evidenciaron la necesidad de un plan de formación que atienda las brechas existentes en las competencias técnicas, organizativas y empresariales de las mujeres, y que promueva el desarrollo de un turismo agroecológico auténtico y sostenible. En conclusión, se propone un plan de formación integral y adaptado al contexto local, que busca empoderar a las Madres del Barrio como agentes de cambio en el desarrollo turístico de su comunidad. Se recomienda la implementación de este plan, así como la promoción de alianzas interinstitucionales para garantizar su sostenibilidad y el fortalecimiento del turismo agroecológico en la región.

Životni stil je način života koji se temelji na skupu vrijednosti, stavova, ponašanja i navika pojedinca ili skupine ljudi. Često se smatra jednim od najvažnijih pokazatelja socijalnog statusa i identiteta, jer odražava preferencije i vrijednosti pojedinca ili skupine u određenoj društvenoj zajednici. Također, može biti povezan s ekonomskim i društvenim uvjetima pojedinca, poput primanja, obrazovanja i mjesta stanovanja. Diplomskim radom pod nazivom Zapadni stil života i njegov utjecaj na potrošače u Hrvatskoj se želi pojasniti kako se razvijala Zapadna civilizacija, kako su se razvijali trendovi i kako se živjelo na Zapadu, želi se pojasniti što je stil života, utjecaj poznatih osoba i trendova na životni stil i svijest potrošača u Hrvatskoj, s naglaskom na žensku populaciju i generaciju Z te vrste koncepata životnog stila koji su danas prisutni. Nadalje, želi se pojasniti potrošačka kultura, utjecaj potrošnje na svijest i ostali relevantni pojmovi vezani za temu rada. Nakon teorijskog dijela, cilj istraživanja je ispitati (korištenjem anketnog upitnika) utjecaj modnih trendova na ponašanje žena te koliko su žene podložne kopiranju ponašanja svojih idola na društvenim mrežama. Također, u radu se žele istražiti stavovi i vrijednosti mlade generacije Z u vezi s tradicionalnim vrijednostima, društvenim problemima te njihovu razinu tolerancije i prihvaćanja različitosti. Nadalje, istraživanjem se želi utvrditi utjecaj brendova i potrošnje znakova na odabir životnog stila te razumjeti motivaciju za kupnju brendiranih proizvoda kao sredstva za identifikaciju s određenim životnim stilom.

This open access book presents a series of speculative, experimental modes of inquiry in the present times of environmental damage that have come to be known as the age of the Anthropocene. Throughout the book authors develop more nuanced ways of engaging with the environmentally vulnerable Arctic. They counter distancing, exoticising, and even apocalyptic imaginaries of the Arctic by staying proximate with mundane places and beings of the north. The volume engages and plays with familiar tourism concepts, such as hospitality, visiting, difference, care, openness, and distance, while expanding the focus from binary and human-centric approaches of hosts and guests to questions of wellbeing among multispecies communities. The transdisciplinary group of contributors share a curiosity about how staying proximate may provide theoretical depth and epistemological openings to attend to current tensions and to diversify the ways we do and enact research. Thus, each chapter provides a methodological experiment with proximity, developing diverse ways of envisioning and storying more-than-human worlds.

This research discusses how local champions in the concept of livelihood act as bridge actors in organizing stakeholders. To elaborate on this, Palembapang Village became the subject of the research. The background for choosing this location is that local champions use weak ties to social networks to contact other stakeholders (in this case HMJ Sosiologi FISIP Unila) through social media. Thus, in this study, the analytical knife used is Granovetter's theoretical argument, namely the strength of weak ties in social networks. This academic argumentation describes how organizing patterns are formed through the role of local champions. The research method used is qualitative with an explanatory case study approach. The process of selecting informants is based on specific criteria and is part of this organizational relationship pattern. This series of research activities found that weak ties allow the community to receive new information and innovate their work patterns. Meanwhile, strong ties limit the development and organization of stakeholders in rural communities. This is because the more robust the relationship in the social network, the tendency is to maintain the network to remain stable. This does not happen in weak networks, so it is more flexible.

Sragen merupakan sebuah kota ramai yang berada di wilayah provinsi Jawa Tengah. Sebagai kota yang berada di sebelah selatan sungai Bengawan Solo, Sragen mempunyai keanekaragaman budaya yang sangat menarik seperti membatik. Batik sragen yang berada di pinggir sungai Bengawan Solo, yang sering disebut juga dengan Batik Girli (Pinggir Kali). This paper presents the Livelihoods-Based Risk Profiling Framework (LRPF) to support rural livelihoods adaptation in Western Province, Solomon Islands. Our framework addresses narrow disciplinary perspectives to provide a more comprehensive understanding of risks to rural livelihoods. We expand previous climate-focused frameworks by incorporating non-climatic hazards and key socioeconomic factors that influence vulnerability. We employed a participatory mixed-methods approach using focus group workshops and household surveys to assess risk across three rural communities. The data were analysed to produce decision support tools including livelihood risk profiles, vulnerability index tables, and risk interaction diagrams. These tools identified priority adaptation initiatives targeting key risk drivers, demonstrating the LRPF's capacity to support communities in addressing complex risks and aiding external stakeholders to better align their interventions with local realities. By adopting a holistic perspective, the LRPF can enhance the robustness of adaptation planning, leading to more effective and sustainable adaptation outcomes for rural livelihoods.

This research is entitled The Role of Media in Promoting Sustainable Tourism Practices, which aims to understand the contribution of the media in increasing tourist awareness of the concept of sustainable tourism. The method used in this study is Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which allows the collection, analysis, and synthesis of various relevant research in a systematic manner. The SLR process involves identifying key research questions, literature search strategies from academic sources such as Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect, as well as data analysis to identify trends, key findings, and research gaps in the field under review. The results of the study show that media, both traditional and digital, have a strategic role in the promotion of sustainable tourism. Digital media, such as social media, blogs, and vlogs, are effective tools in disseminating information and shaping tourists' perceptions of sustainable destinations. Meanwhile, traditional media remains relevant in reaching certain segments of tourists. However, there are several challenges in the implementation of media as a means of promoting sustainable tourism, including greenwashing practices that can mislead tourists and low awareness of sustainability among industry players. Therefore, collaboration between the government, industry players, and the public is needed in optimizing the role of the media to support socially responsible, economic, and environmentally responsible tourism practices. With the right strategy, the media can be an important instrument in ensuring the sustainability of the tourism sector and providing long-term benefits for all stakeholders

Social acceptance is essential for the successful implementation of renewable energy technologies and can be divided into three main categories: socio-political approval, community acceptance, and market acceptance. Socio-political acceptance refers to broad public support for policies and technologies, although local resistance often persists due to decisions about siting. Community acceptance involves the support of local stakeholders and is influenced by the Not in My Back Yard (NIMBY) phenomenon, though research indicates varied reactions to renewable projects. Market acceptance concerns the adoption of innovations by consumers and investors, affected by the complexity of energy infrastructures. Policy frameworks are crucial for fostering community engagement, inclusivity, and transparency. Incentives aligned with community motivations enhance participation. The integration of AI, VR, and blockchain can further improve engagement platforms. Sustainable community development requires active participation, capacity building, diversified financing, flexibility, social equity, and continuous impact evaluation. Sharing knowledge and replicating successful models across communities is vital for broader impact.

This research examines the views and understanding of professionals working in urban planning and environmental fields of the role that green infrastructure will play in the sustainable urban development of India. Surveys were administered to a total of 71 respondents, mostly from Delhi, Mumbai, Uttarakhand, and Bangalore. The findings found a strong support for the green infrastructure as a salient component of sustainable planning in urban areas, with lots of benefits such as cleaning the air and water sources, reducing the urban islands of heat, biodiversity growth, and human well-being. However, there remained a significant barrier to adoption, including high initial setup costs, maintenance challenges, and inadequate policy support. The survey also provided insights into strategies that might be necessary in overcoming some of these challenges, which include increased funding, public awareness campaigns, policy and regulatory support, and community engagement. Most of the respondents were optimistic about the integration of green infrastructure in the future of urban planning. The conclusion of the study emphasizes policy recommendations in terms of requiring strong policy support, institutional strengthening, and community engagement for the successful implementation of green infrastructure and creating more sustainable and resilient urban environments in India.

Kota Singkawang memiliki potensi lahan sawah yang luasnya semakin berkurang. Besarnya tekanan penduduk terhadap lahan pertanian, menjadi salah satu indikator tersedianya lahan pertanian tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui besarnya tekanan penduduk terhadap perubahan penggunaan lahan sawah melalui identifikasi citra Landsat multi temporal, dan analisis tekanan penduduk. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terjadi penurunan sebesar 1,5 % untuk lahan sawah, kawasan hutan 17,8 %, tegalan berkurang 8,6 %, dan semak belukar berkurang 0,5 %. Sementara itu penggunaan lahan pemukiman bertambah 0,6 % dan perkebunan rakyat 27,6 %. Tekanan penduduk atas lahan sawah sejak tahun 2007 meningkat menjadi lebih dari 2, yang artinya sudah melebihi daya dukung lahan untuk mencukupi kebutuhan bahan pangan.

The research results indicate that the image of tourist destinations, service innovation, and perceived value have a positive impact on tourist loyalty, while the image of tourist destinations and service innovation mediate tourist loyalty through perceived value. The results of this study contribute to providing reference and inspiration for tourism destinations and tourism enterprises, and provide new ideas and methods for theoretical research and practical applications in the tourism discipline.

Sažetak: U radu se istražuje važnost turizma za lokalno stanovništvo Primoštena. Općina Primošten u posljednje je vrijeme ostvarila nekoliko hvalevrijednih projekata koji se odnose na izgradnju važnih objekata za domicilno stanovništvo te na uređenje povijesne jezgre i plaža. Sve to upućuje na činjenicu da Općina Primošten uvelike radi na daljnjem poboljšanju svoje pozicije kao poželjne turističke destinacije. Rad donosi rezultate empirijskog istraživanja provedena metodom ankete na namjernom uzorku odraslog stanovništva Primoštena (N=105) o mišljenjima i stavovima prema razvoju turizma na tom području. Ispitane su percipirane koristi i efekti koje turizam ima za tu lokalnu zajednicu, mišljenja ispitanika o turističkoj ponudi Primoštena i o eksploataciji Primoštena Burnjeg u svrhu razvoja ruralnog turizma.

Johan has more than ten years' experience in both qualitative and quantitative research and has been involved in several research projects and large-scale surveys. His research outputs mainly pertain to tourism, population studies and the environment. He has been the author and co-author of a number of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and client reports. Kholadi Tlabela was a researcher in the Urban, Rural and Economic Development Research Programme during the time of the study. She holds a masters degree in International Communications from the University of South Africa. Kholadi has more than 15 years' experience in both qualitative and quantitative research, and has been involved in several research projects. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are integral to efforts to keep global warming below 2°C in accordance with the United Nations' 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Yet the transboundary governance dimensions of NbS remain unclear and largely undocumented. In Southeast Asia, NbS have emphasised the conservation and/ or sustainable commodification of carbon sinks found in terrestrial and mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, peatlands and agricultural soils. Mostly project-driven and fixed-term, these ''solutions'' have often failed to meet their social and ecological objectives. Increasingly, they have added to cross-border problems of: (1) displaced carbon emissions; and (2) economic migration and societal dispossession. This perspective paper delineates a transboundary governance research agenda to mitigate these trade-offs and enhance the co-benefits of NbS in carbon sinks. Building on NbS literature, it identifies crosssector, multi-scalar and interdisciplinary pathways to improve transboundary cooperation, inclusion and equity in carbon sink governance in varying Southeast Asian contexts.

Sustainable marketing stands for marketing activities that take into consideration (1) environmental responsibility-which is represented by a balance between business activities and natural environment, (2) social responsibility-which denotes a company that takes care about all stakeholders, and (3) economic prosperity based on sustainability principles. Research on sustainable marketing proved that these activities have many positive consequences with regard to business-to-consumers markets. However, in the light of business-to-business markets, the conclusions are not unison. The fact is that for many years companies considered sustainability initiatives a cost, with only enhanced reputation among end consumers, as a positive outcome. Organizational buyers, who dominantly decide based on rational factors, were not ready to pay premium price for a sustainable offer. It can be observed that, due to regulatory and public pressures, these attitudes change, ending up with more and more organizations operating on business-to-business (B2B) markets seeking for sources of sustainability along their value chain. This paper represents an analyisis of published theoretical and empirical research, with an aim to determine theoretical grounds and concepts connected to B2B sustainable marketing. The paper analyses dimension od sustainable marketing, the sustainable marketing orientation concept, as well as challenges that B2B companies face in sustainable marketing implementation.

Purpose of the Study: Over-tourism is an issue that is being experienced by many well-known destinations in the world, both in urban and rural areas. The purpose of this research is to find out how the experience of developing a Tourist village is seen from the tourism lifecycle approach. Migration, being a multi-component process, is a factor in the export and spread of ethnic cultural elements. In this preliminary study, as a novelty, the migration of local food, raw materials and wild edible plants is presented with the study at fifteen settlements in Syunik, Armenia. In the course of the research, several ways of transportation of plants, agricultural products, processed foods and raw materials to the destination of the migrant's settling place were documented: 1) a migrant
from Syunik who moved abroad takes goods from Armenia with him when visits his homeland, 2) those living in Syunik send goods to their relatives who moved abroad, 3) family members or relatives living in Syunik take goods with them when visit migrants abroad, 4) migrants order goods and buy from people in Syunik engaged in plant-gathering and trade of local goods, 5) organizations engaged in import and sale of goods from Armenia are being open in the largest Armenian communities abroad, 6) foreign tourists or businessmen visiting Armenia take goods with them to abroad.
      The main ways in which wild plants and agrarian products (including beverages and flavorings, often also ready dishes) are becoming known at the new country of migrant are highlighted. These are mutual visits and interactions of individuals and families (foreign neighbours, colleagues, etc.) and introduction of the traditional food of migrant’s country of origin at the educational, work or community events of the host country.
      Culinary plants, flavoring plants, and a number of plants used as tea herbs are taken from wild plants and farm products, the main of which are sorrel, sickleweed, chervil, thyme, mint, wild savory, and cumin. Amongst almost ready dishes, they take pezkathan, raw materials of khashil, from pickles – pickled bokhi, chekhthetho. They also take honey, doshab, jams, walnut, rosehip, cheese with bokhi, mulberry vodka, etc. Some foods, flavorings and teas are also used for medicinal purposes. The main directions of transportation of food products and other wild plants are the countries with the largest Armenian communities: the Russian Federation, the USA and the EU countries.
    Thus, the ethno-cultural function of the food in the process of migration is realized by maintaining the connection between the migrant and its family and the manifestation of ethnic identity in a foreign environment, and the traditional dish of the migrant's country of origin also "migrates" and becomes recognizable in the new environment.

The focus of this thesis is on the role of handicraft production in rural development in Northern Thailand, exploring how handicrafts evolve over time in the context of a modernising economy. This links with on-going debates on community-based development theory, including those related to rural industrialisation, rural-urban relations and biases, indigenous knowledge, rural poverty and livelihoods. The thesis seeks to return to an issue which was a popular area of investigation in the 1970s, namely the role of small-scale industries in rural development. Rural spaces have always contained an element of non-farm activities, often classified as 'handicraft production'. Two villages in Chiang Mai province in Northern Thailand have been selected for study in order to assess the roles of handicrafts in rural development. One selected case study village is Baan Ton Pao, which is engaged in saa (mulberry) paper making. The other selected village is Baan Muang Kung, where handicraft production is based on pottery making. Through an empirical study of these two villages, Baan Ton Pao and Baan Muang Kung, this thesis shows that handicrafts have significant potential for promoting rural industrialisation and supporting rural development, especially through the One Tambon One Product programme. Handicrafts are, therefore, contributing to rural poverty alleviation through employment and income generation, and through generating economic growth rooted in the countryside, separate from efforts directed at agriculture and farming. However, it is also important to understand how this very effort is also creating new inequalities in the countryside and, arguably, new populations of poor people. The study is important because it has been argued -as noted above -that handicrafts have significant potential for promoting rural industries and supporting rural development and rural livelihoods -and yet this has rarely been studied in any great detail. The conceptual frameworks are impressive; the empirical support remains thin. This thesis contributes in a significant way to debates about rural development and particularly handicrafts in Thailand and beyond.
