Escrita em abril de 1776, My own life, traduzida por nós como Minha própria vida, é uma autobiografia concisa, redigida por Hume às vésperas de sua morte. Foi publicada postumamente, em março de 1777, por Strahan e Cadell, em um conjunto de outros escritos compilados em uma obra intitulada de The life of David Hume, Esq. Written by himself. Com apenas 21 parágrafos, Minha própria vida nos coloca diante da genialidade de Hume, tanto no que diz respeito ao conteúdo quanto à clareza e precisão de sua escrita. Sem perder de vista a amplitude e as modulações do “espaço biográfico”, considero o arquivo pessoal e a biblioteca particular como fontes para a escrita biográfica centrada na trajetória intelectual. Partindo dessa premissa, examino a relevância do acervo particular do barão do Rio Branco para a análise dos textos que produziu, aprofundando reflexões em torno da composição e organização do seu arquivo e apresentando considerações acerca da sua coleção de livros. Esta análise não se restringe aos itens separadamente, mas busca evidenciar a relação que preservam com o conjunto ao qual pertencem. O que permite trabalhar aspectos do contexto de produção desses conjuntos documentais e possibilita a concepção desses itens como fragmentos de vida. Desse modo, o artigo visa intensificar a troca de conhecimentos entre diferentes áreas do saber, a fim de promover um uso mais crítico dessas fontes, seja em estudos biográficos, de história intelectual ou em outras abordagens possíveis.

In this scholarly and thought-provoking book, Terrance MacMullan makes an important contribution to the broader task of “bridging the rift separating the philosophical conversations of predominantly English-speaking North America and predominantly Spanish and South or Latin America” (viii). The chronological and geographical scope of MacMullan’s book is one of its most impressive features, so let me alphabetically name just a few of the philosophers he engages in English and Spanish as North-South pairs to give a sense of the book’s tremendous range: Addams and Alberdi, Anzaldúa and Bolívar, DuBois and Frondizi, Emerson and Ingenieros, James and Martí, Peirce and Rodó, Royce and Vasconcelos. This list leaves out a lot, including all the living philosophers writing in both Spanish and English that MacMullan engages and cites throughout, but even this heavily truncated list gestures toward MacMullan’s success in fostering “a genuine, integrated inter-American philosophy capable of deconstructing the legacy of the United Sates’ white supremacist empire in the Americas and to envision a greater America—[…] una América Cósmica—that achieves the promise of our ideals by being fully democratic, engaged, and pluralistic” (xv).

RESUMEN La crisis de la sucesión presidencial en Nicaragua entre 1926 y 1927 fue una oportunidad para que el régimen revolucionario de México conducido por Plutarco Elías Calles recuperara la influencia del país en Centro América. Esta actuación supuso particularmente una confrontación política, diplomática y hasta militar con los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, país con el que tuvo que competir para el reconocimiento de la legitimidad constitucional de la vicepresidencia del liberal Juan B. Sacasa, derrocado por el golpe de Estado del general Emiliano Chamorro. Analizamos las motivaciones políticas del gobierno de Calles y la capacidad diplomática y militar de su gobierno para intervenir en este conflicto de carácter internacional pero que ventilaba, al mismo tiempo, las tensiones que tenía el país mexicano frente a los intereses económicos y políticos de los Estados Unidos en el propio México.

Suffrage is the most significant political development within modern Liberal states. Despite this fact, it is curious as to why suffrage movements have so little history. This article focuses on the creation of an edited volume that seeks to address the women’s suffrage story across the Americas. While the intellectual process of the project is discussed in some detail, this article is predominantly a reflection on the process of developing a collaborative project and the challenges inherent to a transnational approach. This project reveals both the significance of suffrage and simultaneously the fractured landscape within individual countries, suffrage movements and the body politics as countless individuals and groups were excluded from the concept of ‘citizenship.’ It has become clear at this juncture that although significant gaps within women’s history across the hemisphere remain, attempting to compile a hemispheric story such as this one would have been unthinkable even a few...

Whereas most research on Gabriela Mistral positions her as a Hispanic writer and examines her work through this lens, this paper proposes a different approach, defining Mistral as a Pan-American author. From this perspective on the Nobel laureate, Mistral's travel writing occupies a core position. In the early 20th century, Pan-Americanism—the endeavor to bring North, Central, and South America closer together—became a popular discourse, in part as a result of the foundation of the Pan-American Union. Nevertheless, most Brazilian and Hispanic authors looked to Europe for aesthetic inspiration, especially France, and were rarely interested in the intercultural exchange on their own continent. Mistral may be one of the few exceptions in this regard. Two short texts lie at the heart of my paper: Mistral's descriptions of the Brazilian cities of Belo Horizonte and Petrópolis. Through a close reading of these two forgotten texts, I will show that Mistral's travel writing contributed to shaping a sense of Pan-American belonging. A atuação na imprensa fazia parte do processo de formação da elite letrada do Oitocentos, de modo a complementar a instrução formal. Experiência que proporcionava a familiarização com a escrita periódica e
demonstrava o potencial dessa prática como instrumento de ação política. Diante desse contexto, analiso a participação de Paranhos Júnior, o futuro barão do Rio Branco, no jornal A Nação, na década de 1870. Este exame tem como objetivo recuperar aspectos da sua trajetória, visto
que essa produção é representativa do personagem multifacetado, permitindo observar a sua inserção no cenário político através da palavra
escrita, onde a atividade como jornalista dialoga com suas pesquisas históricas. As nuances dessa escrita contribuem para uma proposta biográfica construída a partir da produção intelectual do barão do Rio Branco, avançando, assim, por uma perspectiva até então pouco explorada.

This paper aims to analyse the first concrete initiative towards the construction of the Brazilian Student House at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris in the 1920s. As presented in the bill proposed by the physician, scientist, professor, and deputy Antônio Austregésilo Rodrigues de Lima to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies in 1926, the idea of a house for Brazilian artists, physicians, scholars, and professors emerged from a Franco-Brazilian network of scientists, diplomats, professors, and institutions. As we argue, the Brazilian Student House in Paris in the interwar period can be conceived as a scientific-diplomatic object, whose disputes around its idealization may be framed as both an example of scientific cooperation and competition, as well as theorized by Pierre-Bruno Ruffini. Moreover, as observed in Austregésilo’s discourses defending the project, the creation of the house would institutionalise and improve both the circulation of Brazilian scholars in Paris and the Brazilian cultural influence over France. Although the house was not built when planned, and the Maison du Brésil was inaugurated only in 1959, the analysis of this first project may contribute to further discussions on the mutual scientific and university interests between France and Brazil during the 20th century.

This paper begins by discussing Júlio de Castilho's work as pre-announcing an interest in "material culture" and vernacular architecture that would achieve its scholarly definition in Kubler's Portuguese Plain Architecture. As Kubler himself states the term "plain style" was picked from Castilho's Lisboa Antiga: o Bairro Alto (1972: 3). This much discussed notion, as well as its counterpartplain architecturewas presented by Kubler as denoting an architecture "free from academic rules and Italianate forms", one that was "like a vernacular architecture, related to living dialect traditions more than to the great authors of Antiquity" (Kubler, 1972: 3). This definition can be very much associated with Castilho's own interest in the history of Lisbon and its building environment. The founder of the so-called Olisipografia (an historical discipline entirely devoted to Lisbon's study) was deeply committed with the preservation of Lisbon's historical neighborhoods when everybody else strived for the radical renovation of Alfama, Mouraria or Bairro Alto. Thus, Castilho was the first to address, in 1879, the very notion of urban heritage in Portugal while developing his thesis on Lisbon's distinctiveness as arising both from specific modes of urban everyday living (to which he devoted an ethnographic inquiry) and its current residential anonymous architecture. Following his interest in common architecture, Castilho would even be the first, and only author to point Pombaline architecture as the basis of any survey on the specificity of the "Portuguese house" which, he sought, had to be discussed on the grounds of urban tipologies instead of rural ones. Accordingly, Castilho not only attributed historical value to this ultimate "plain style", that is Pombaline architecture, but also tried to define it as a heuristic starting point to contemporary architectural practices (that is if Lisbon's distinctiveness were to be preserved). It did so in a context of unanimous depreciation of Pombaline architecture as well. Indeed, those who commented the Reconstruction of Lisbon since late 18th century did not saw it as a project endowed with artistic value, but as a work injured by aesthetic marginality. Monotony, pragmatism, parsimony, repetition, and lack of originality shape a group of powerful anathemas that cast a shadow over it. As is now well known (Leal: 2004) only in 1947-9 the modernist ideals guiding Pardal Monteiro's perception of Pombaline architecture would allow a renewal of interest in the undertaken of 18th century Portuguese military architects. And, of course, a thorough recognition of its urban plan had to wait until the study devoted by J.-A. França to the Reconstruction of Lisbon was finally published in 1965. 7 "Following Júlio de Castilho's idea of estilo chão [BA, I, 144], I have called it 'plain' architecture" (Kubler, 1972: 3). Castilho's study on Lisbon's Bairro Alto had its origin in a single volume published in 1879 by Antonio M aria Pereira. Castilho's series on Old Lisbon (Lisboa Antiga) would then begin with his 8 volumes on Lisbon's Oriental Quarters (Bairros Orientais) published from 1884 on. The 2nd edition of his study on Bairro Altothat would later become the first part of the Old Lisbon's (Lisboa Antiga) serieswould only appear 23 years after the 1879 volume. Lisboa Antiga: o Bairro Alto was reedited between 1902 and 1904 as an extended 5 volume study. Its 3rd edition was published by Lisbon's City Council from 1954 on, under the coordination of Gustavo M atos Sequeira (who worked on the 2nd edition of Castilhos's study). All subsequent quotations and references are taken from this 5 volume 3rd edition (1954-1966). 8 "In Portugal, the design of such buildings was not distinguishable by great beauties or luxuries; those were monopolised by churches and convents, where the power and opulence of the Royal savings appeared. Empresas, profissionais e políticas americanas no Rio de Janeiro Engana-se quem pensa que discutir a Exposição do Centenário da Independência do Brasil interessava apenas aos brasileiros, quando de sua abertura oficial, em 7 de setembro de 1922. Pelas palavras de Mitchell Carroll, articulista da revista americana Art and Archaeology, pode-se chegar a outra conclusão:

This paper presents the findings of a project I created as a member of the Latin American Working Group for the Toronto 2015 Pan and ParaPan American Games occurring in July and August, 2015. As an Ignite community partner of the Games, and in collaboration with York University, the project aimed to explore the proposed core values and mission statement of the TORONTO 2015 Games, whose stated mission was to "ignite the spirit through a celebration of sport and culture", embracing core values of "joy, purpose, accountability, collaboration and results." The creation of "poet-tree" installations and webpages (creative and photo captured real life installations at various locations, websites, or in physical sculptural and movement formats) with poems or poet's names from the diverse regions of the Americas evoked the sports and the spirit of the culture of each place, and in particular of the connection across the Americas to the Toronto 2015 Pan / ParaPan Am Games. I track the project's progress and present these findings as viewed through recent developments in performance theory and embodied literary theory; the relation to identity, expressions of place and negotiating inter-subjectivities to reflect upon the network of realities which exist beyond national boundaries, as hemispheric and complex conceptions of words and physical action in representations of being. This type of wor(l)d-making is examined by presenting the poems and poets contained in the installations, to trace the expressions found in these examples connecting sports and culture, or reveal their disjuncture.

Th is article argues that advancements in women's rights in the Inter-American diplomatic system after WWII did not solely follow women activists' interests but resulted from the male-dominated multilateral relations in the region too. In support of these negotiations, the new political vocabulary of Human Rights emerging from the re-confi guration of the world aff airs was instrumental for the advancement of institutional reforms related to women's rights in Latin America, especially voting rights. Contrary to existing literature on the subject, this article delves into the process of constructing this new vocabulary, instead of examining its fi nal forms only. It uses archival sources from Brazil to off er another point of view of the making of the rhetoric of human rights and its uses in Inter-American relations in the after-war.

En los albores de la última década del siglo xix, Argentina y Brasil
padecieron una aguda inestabilidad política y financiera. Tras un decenio
de un impresionante despegue, caracterizado por la fuerte atracción
de inversión extranjera, el crecimiento de actividades vinculadas
al comercio exterior y el desarrollo de obras de infraestructura, las dos
economías más grandes de América del Sur enfrentaron un panorama
completamente distinto: depreciación de la moneda, fugas de capital,
quiebras de empresas y bancos, revoluciones y golpes militares. La
importancia de ambas naciones en un mundo que vivía la Primera
Globalización provocó que estos desequilibrios tuvieran un impacto
internacional. El objetivo del texto es estudiar la manera en que la crisis fue analizada por la prensa mexicana- Se busca demostrar que la cobertura de la crisis de Argentina y Brasil sirvió a una prensa vinculada con la esfera gubernamental como marco comparativo no sólo para analizar las experiencias de esos países, sino también para medir los grados de eficacia de las propias políticas mexicanas, y así sugerir su afianzamiento o cambio de ruta, según el caso.

Este artigo dá relevo às renovadas perspectivas interpretativas do campo da história política e da história da diplomacia a partir de um estudo do pan-americanismo entre o final do século XIX e as primeiras décadas do século XX. Por meio da análise de uma série de textos publicados pela União Pan-Americana a partir da realização da Primeira Conferência Internacional Americana (Washigton D.C., 1889), bem como dos debates realizados no âmbito do Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil em função do convite para se fazer representar no evento, argumenta-se sobre diferentes mobilizações do pan-americanismo, entendido como uma prática política, por agentes estadunidenses e latino-americanos. Esse exercício indica como, a partir do final do século XIX, o pan-americanismo se tornou mote para a elaboração e disputa de diferentes projetos políticos de integração cultural, política e econômica entre os países americanos, da mesma forma que se tornou ponto de tensão das relações entre a América e a Europa.

This paper analyzes the representations of U.S. statesmen, Bolívar, and San Martín during the centenaries of the Monroe Doctrine (1923) and the Congress of Panama (1926). On the one hand, it examines the characterizations of U.S. leaders and Bolívar, as well as the connections established between them, in the public interventions of various agents and articulators of U.S. Pan-American policy in the Americas during both commemorations. On the other hand, it explores the tensions and exchanges that these operations generated with "Bolivarian" political and literary referents, who insisted on presenting the Liberator as the unique father of Pan-Americanism. Finally, this article focuses on the efforts of some important politicians and intellectuals of Argentine and Chilean origin who tried to attribute to San Martín and other historical figures of the time a significant role in the birth of continental solidarity and cooperation. Ultimately, I argue that these centenaries triggered a series of complex political-ideological interactions among numerous diplomats, politicians, and intellectuals from across the continent, proving that the 1920s was a time of strong hegemonic expectations in which history became a powerful and effective resource in the attempt to reorganize and/or secure the hierarchies of the inter-American order.

No período recente, as mudanças climáticas globais verificadas pelo aumento da temperatura decorrente de ações antrópicas é uma das principais problemáticas ambientais. Em se tratando do aumento de temperatura entre áreas urbanas e rurais, numa escala local ou regional, os estudos tendem a avaliar o fenômeno das ilhas de calor. Compreender a importância do estudo das ilhas de calor urbanas, suas principais investigações e ocorrências podem contribuir para análise do fenômeno nos países de urbanização tardia. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar , por meio de uma análise cienciométrica, o estado da arte das pesquisas de ilha de calor entre os anos de 2000 a 2020.  A partir das definições iniciais, obteve-se uma triagem de 169 artigos. Para esse universo foi avaliada toda a produção científica; incluindo país, ano, autores, instituições, palavras-chave, jornal (fator de impacto), clima, população e área geográfica. Throughout the years, Peter Eisenman's approach to his critique of current architecture has changed. Within the scope of this article, however, his constant search has always been for the autonomy of architecture, starting, initially, with support from conceptual art and linguistics, and, then later, migrating to post-structuralist interpretations. The critique, which had previously been configured within an architecture devoid of external references, then, within an urban context, went on to present the great agent of the conception of his projects. Thus, this article aims to present Eisenman's critical architecture and discuss how it ceased to exclude its contextual elements and began to relate to the memory of the places into which it was inserted. Thus, we have sought to read authors who have influenced Eisenman's work, as well as texts by the architect himself and his critics, with the intention of gaining a better understanding of the environment and the reflections that have brought about such architectural productions, in addition to the transition that took place from one to the other. In this study, the main differences between both actions have been identified, but it was also concluded that there exists a conversion with regard to distancing the observer/user from the two different series of projects.

This essay starts with a brief critical study of the aspects assumed in the definition of a "critical Latin-American continentalism" as it had been proposed by The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS) during the year 2015. This critical review goes from historical elements and precisions to worldviews and socio-politic orders linked with the different names put on the "American" and "Latin-American" continentalisms from canonical essays of Spanish American Literature. For "continentalism" I mean any political and cultural project whose main ideal is to integrate each nation of the American continent or the Latin-American region into a big symbolic continental idea. As an aftermath of this critical review, I identify some critical aspects that we need to keep in mind as when we propose a political Latin-Americanism as when we use any of the different "isms" used to refer this part of America. En Santos Dumont en las Cataratas, Micael Alvino da Silva nos transporta a las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y el comienzo del siglo XX para comprender lo que estaba ocurriendo en el mundo y en la frontera trinacional cuando Alberto Santos Dumont visitó las Cataratas del Iguazú, en 1916. Con un texto agradable, el libro es organizado en pequeños ensayos y sus capítulos están encadenados de manera que resaltan, cada uno, un aspecto de la trayectoria del célebre aviador, siempre estableciendo relaciones con la tierra de Naipi. Partiendo del antiguo distrito de João Gomes, en el interior de Minas Gerais, y pasando por París, las Cataratas del Niágara, por Chile y Argentina, se invitan lectores y lectoras a seguir los primeros pasos de la aviación en el mundo. Al mismo tiempo que Brasil dejaba de ser un imperio esclavista y se convertía en una república, se establecían las fronteras nacionales con los países vecinos y a Colonia Militar de Iguazú daría paso al municipio de Vila Iguaçu.
La insólita visita de Santos Dumont a las Cataratas finalmente se convierte en libro, materializando el deseo del propio aeronauta de escribir sobre el Iguazú, lo que no logró hacerlo en vida. Casi 100 años después de su muerte, la EDUNILA se complace en ofrecer esta historia al público.

C'était en ces termes que Robert Gale Woolbert rendait compte en 1942, dans sa chronique bibliographique régulière dans la revue américaine Foreign Affairs, d'un ouvrage aujourd'hui presque complètement oublié, The Bases of a World Commonwealth, qui venait d'être publié l'année précédente. Son auteur, Charles Bungay Fawcett (1883-1952) était alors un des géographes britanniques les plus éminents.

Most traditional histories of feminism portray the United States and western Europe as its intellectual and political centers, at least during the twentieth century. But Katherine Marino forcefully challenges this narrative in her outstanding book, Feminism for the Americas: The Making of an International Human Rights Movement. Marino aptly traces the history and development of feminismo americano-a feminism spearheaded by Latin American women, predominantly from Uruguay, Cuba, Panama, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico-to reveal how integral it was in creating a regional and international feminist movement. In particular, Marino demonstrates that between the two World Wars, Latin America was home to an active set of feminist movements, and it is the women of these movements who deserve the credit for ushering in the internationalization of women's rights, creating the UN Commission on the Status of Women, and insisting that women's rights be protected in the UN Charter. Consequently, says Marino, we must reassess our understanding of the history of feminism to understand that "Latin American feminisms not only thrived but, in fact, took the lead internationally. .. as innovators in global feminist thought and activism" (7). Marino introduces readers to the main ideas, controversies, and developments of feminismo americano by taking them on a journey through the lives, relationships, collaborations, and disagreements among six of its central figures: Paulina Luisi (Uruguay), Bertha Lutz (Brazil), Clara González (Panama), Ofelia Domínguez Navarro (Cuba), Doris Stevens (United States), and Marta Vergara (Chile). We are hooked from the first page with Marino's description of a major falling-out between Domínguez and Stevens: a schism illustrative of the main rifts between US and Latin American feminists. Stevens represented a typical US position that maintained that the primary focus of feminist action in the Americas should be advancing women's suffrage and equal rights treaties, whereas Domínguez represented a more common Latin American position, which saw this vision of feminism as both too narrow-as she conceived of feminism as including broader fights for social and economic justice for working women and promoting the political and civil rights of all people who were "suffering under a dictatorship and under US imperialism" (2)-and as disconnected from local realities, arguing that such legal freedoms were practically meaningless under a dictatorship. These tensions over the nature of feminism in the Americas, its objectives, and who should lead it are ever-present themes in the book's eight chapters.

To deal with shock in art, I propose to talk about the work of Francisco Goya Y Lucientes, because for me, it was the initial shock, revealing the strength of the work of art, that I felt over fifty years ago at the Prado Museum in Madrid, faced with Goya's two paintings, Dos and Tres de mayo. My intention is to revisit this initial shock and extend it to other works by Goya, in particular the engravings in Les Désastres de la guerre and some of the Peintures noires. The shock I felt when confronted with certain paintings and engravings by Francisco Goya y Lucientes was like no other. The first vision of two of these paintings in particular had to do with the invasion and warlike occupation of Spain by Napoleon I's imperial army between 1808 and 1813.

No início do século XX, símbolos do patriotismo republicano eram alçados a monumentos, reformando-carimbando os centros urbanos, como fez a Avenida Sete de Setembro soteropolitana, em sua abertura e toponímia. Mas o que tais investidas do poder dominante tentaram omitir? A chegada da modernidade às cidades brasileiras empurrou a população negra para as margens dos espaços [monumentalizados-espetacularizados] agora destinado às elites. No entanto, tais sujeitos se viram impelidos seja a aquilombar-se nas margens de tais monumentos, seja a profaná-los com seus próprios rituais cotidianos. Ambos os movimentos encontraram nas ruínas-físicas e simbólicas-as condições de possibilidade para [re]produzir esses modos de existência na cidade. A fim de compreender como tais processos lidam com as investidas atuais dos poderes hegemônicos [público e privado], invocamos aqui o Dois de Julho, bairro que tangencia a Avenida Sete e homenageia, em sua toponímia, a data comemorativa da independência do Brasil na Bahia. Buscamos, no território, a presença cabocla daquelas pessoas que atuaram na linha de frente da guerra da independência, mas sobretudo daquelas que batalham todos os dias pelo direito à permanência no lugar com o qual constituíram vida e sustento.

Peut-être faudrait-il rappeler qu’il n’y a pas de règles dans le dessin si ce n’est l’intention même de l’artiste et sa capacité à utiliser la matière comme il le souhaite. Par ce que finalement, le dessin est beaucoup plus complexe que cette exposition le laisse imaginer et implique de nombreuses étapes, et l’utilisation d’une multitude de matières associées les unes aux autres. Cette exposition de dessins inédits est donc l’occasion de confronter l’artiste et la matière à travers des feuilles préparée en Europe de la renaissance au XIXe siècle.
Cette exposition présente une sélection notable de dessins espagnols avec des œuvres de Murillo, Maella, Camarón ou bien encore Vicente López et Isidre Nonell. Il est clair que les techniques particulièrement appréciées des européens sont la sanguine dont on peut voir quelques beaux exemples et le lavis. Le lavis est réalisé avec un matériau fortement dilué dans de l’eau, il peut donc s’agir d’un lavis de sanguine, d’encre de couleur, de pigments, parfois associés à des rehauts de gouache blanche. Quelques feuilles italiennes présentent un usage audacieux du lavis.

Em 1930, Raymond Shannon, entomólogo da Divisão de Saúde Internacional (DSI) da Fundação Rockefeller, verificou a presença, em Natal, do mosquito Anopheles gambiae, o mais letal vetor da malária na África. Nos anos seguintes, a espécie se alastrou por Rio Grande do Norte e Ceará, adaptando-se às condições geográficas e climáticas da região sem, no entanto, causar novos surtos de malária. Preocupadas com outras questões políticas e sanitárias, em particular a febre amarela, as autoridades brasileiras relegaram o combate ao "invasor africano" a segundo plano. As consequências não tardariam. Em 1938, o Nordeste foi palco da maior epidemia de malária já ocorrida nas Américas. É a história da chegada, do "alastramento silencioso" e do extermínio do Anopheles gambiae do Brasil, nos anos 1930, que nos conta o historiador Gabriel Lopes (2020) em seu livro O feroz mosquito africano no Brasil: o Anopheles gambiae entre o silêncio e a sua erradicação (1930-1940), lançado pela Editora Fiocruz. Fruto de sua tese de doutorado, vencedora do Prêmio Oswaldo Cruz de Teses 2017, na categoria Ciências Humanas e Sociais, o livro articula com sucesso os aspectos políticos e científicos, bem como os condicionantes históricos e sanitários, que contribuíram para transformar a questão em um importante projeto de cooperação sanitária internacional entre o governo brasileiro e a Fundação Rockefeller, materializada na criação, em 1939, do Serviço de Malária do Nordeste (SMNE). Inicialmente considerado uma emergência local e combatido de forma paliativa, o Anopheles gambiae se transformou, transcorridos oito anos desde a sua chegada ao país, em uma oportunidade privilegiada de realização de um experimento de erradicação. Na busca por reconstituir esse processo histórico, Gabriel Lopes dialoga com o campo dos animal studies, que tem espécies não humanas como objeto de suas pesquisas (Ritvo, 2002) e reflete Um experimento de erradicação do Anopheles gambiae no Brasil, 1930-1940

Um dos efeitos das Mudanças Climáticas é o aumento do nível do mar, que poderá trazer inúmeras consequências negativas para cidades costeiras, especialmente para aquelas mais vulneráveis ou mais populosas. Simultaneamente, as pesquisas em torno de soluções de adaptação que integrem os sistemas humanos e naturais, como as Soluções Baseadas na Natureza (SBN), estão sendo ampliadas, incentivando a adoção de estratégias de mitigação e adaptação mais resilientes. Assim, este artigo apresenta os resultados da revisão sistemática de literatura sobre as técnicas tipo SBN implementadas em regiões costeiras nos cenários de aumento do nível do mar a fim de compreender lacunas, desafios e potencialidades. Os resultados apontam que há ainda poucas publicações sobre o tema, principalmente em países em desenvolvimento, e que a eficácia das SBN está atrelada às condições físicas, culturais e socioeconômicas do lugar, não sendo, portanto, efetivas em qualquer cenário.

RESUMO Este artigo buscou analisar os documentos produzidos pelo Instituto Interamericano Del Niño e pela Quinzena Social de Paris, realizada no ano de 1928, destacando a abordagem da transferência cultural pensada para o campo da infância, em especial sobre os debates envolvendo os congressos e exposições internacionais, as escolas ao ar livre e instituições de higiene escolar e a circulação de saberes sobre a temática da infância nos anos iniciais do século XX. Desta forma, buscamos também refletir sobre a disseminação dos trabalhos publicados sobre a infância no Boletin do Instituto, publicada de forma ininterrupta desde de 1927, cujo alcance foi para além do continente americano, atingindo diversos países da Europa, como França, Inglaterra, Alemanha e Itália.

Esta tese de doutorado analisa as cinco primeiras edições dos Congressos Pan-Americanos de Arquitetos (Montevidéu, 1920; Santiago do Chile, 1923; Buenos Aires, 1927; Rio de Janeiro, 1930; Montevidéu, 1940) com o objetivo de compreender os efeitos das articulações operadas entre os debates profissionais e políticos colocados em disputa nesses eventos. As diferentes defesas e polêmicas sobre a formação acadêmica, as esferas de representação e associação profissional, a elaboração de planos urbanos, o problema da habitação e a dimensão simbólica da produção arquitetônica são analisadas em sua implicação mútua com uma geopolítica acentuada pelas relações do entreguerras na América. Por meio da análise das atas e trabalhos produzidos em cada edição, das revistas editadas pelas associações profissionais nacionais e de textos publicados pela União Pan-Americana, em estreito diálogo com abordagens da historiografia, problematiza-se a estruturação do campo profissional organizado a partir do pan-americanismo em suas múltiplas mobilizações. Argumenta-se serem as correspondências entre os projetos para o futuro das cidades americanas e para a profissão de arquiteto estabelecidas com base nessas práticas políticas que, por meio de interpretações sobre a história da América, legitimam o exercício da profissão no continente americano.

It is generally stated that the initial forms of international organizations [hereinafter IOs] can be traced back to the 19th century, and IOs actually get on the stage after the World War II [hereinafter WW II]. This statement causes to raise some questions such as ''Why there were no IOs existed before the 19th century?'' or ''Why the WW II is a landmark in the history of IOs?''. Some scholars answer these questions by listing several reasons mainly regarding to sovereignty, transaction costs, the cataclysm of WW II, and the like. Resumo Este artigo procura redimensionar o papel de Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo como intelectual pioneiro na etnomusicologia brasileira, com ênfase em seu papel como articulador entre instituições e musicólogos norte-americanos entre os anos de 1939 e 1947. Reconhecido como um dos mais importantes musicólogos brasileiros no século XX, Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo é frequentemente lembrado por sua relevância internacional como Secretário da Seção de Música da UNESCO em Paris, cargo que exerceu de 1947 a 1965. No presente trabalho procuro apresentar uma dimensão pouco lembrada do trabalho do musicólogo: seu papel ativo como intelectual ligado ao então chamado campo do "folclore musical brasileiro", com destaque para o alto grau de internacionalização que logrou obter através de convênios e trocas acadêmicas com intelectuais e instituições norte-americanas, tais como Charles Seeger, Alan Lomax, Carleton Sprague Smith e a Biblioteca do Congresso, financiadora de suas viagens etnográficas na década de 1940. O presente trabalho parte da tese “Reargentinização edilícia pelo urbanismo” apresentada pelo arquiteto, urbanista e engenheiro argentino Angel Guido no V Congresso Pan-Americano de Arquitetos, sediado em Montevidéu no ano de 1940, para articular as dimensões nacionalistas e pan-americanistas de seus projetos urbanísticos e arquitetônicos elaborados entre as décadas de 1920 e 1940. As reflexões de Guido são interpretadas a partir de sua relação profissional e pessoal com o literato Ricardo Rojas, autor das obras “Euríndia” e “La restauración nacionalista”, mobilizadas como bases teóricas para os trabalhos do arquiteto. Argumenta-se sobre os deslocamentos operados por Guido sobre a noção de nacionalismo de Rojas para uma escala continental. Com isso, é enfatizada a centralidade das cidades e suas arquiteturas para a implementação dos projetos políticos modernos em pauta na primeira metade do século XX, sobretudo entre intelectuais sul-americanos, bem como a importância da política para os debates arquitetônicos e urbanísticos colocados em pauta nos Congressos Pan-Americanos de Arquitetos.

L’annee 2010 est celui de la commemoration du Bicentenaire de l’independance de la plupart des Etats latino-americains, obtenue apres une lutte armee contre la metropole espagnole, livree conjointement par les patriotes de divers pays. Mais apres leur accession a la vie souveraine, pendant longtemps les nouveaux pays se sont souvent entre-dechires dans des guerres entre Etats voisins. Ils ont ete confrontes aussi au dilemme de la relation avec les Etats-Unis, qui ont joue autant le role de partenaire que de pays envahisseur. Ils ont aussi tarde a se doter de mecanismes d’integration economique. Cette chronique donne une vue d’ensemble sur les etapes historiques dans ce processus, analysant les nouveaux elements presents dans les dernieres decennies, qui font penser que l’Amerique latine commence a agir de facon plus concertee, se rapprochant d’une integration autant sur le plan economique que politique.

While the popular belief that Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) turned suddenly to dark, irrational subjects after his illness of 1793 is arguably mistaken, what is true is that after the illness he devoted himself more closely to black-and-white media. Like Rembrandt (1606-1669), whom Goya particularly admired, the Spanish painter is one of the greatest graphic designers in the history of art. It is also part of Goya's originality that in an era when engravers were often regarded as mere copyists and not creative designers, and drawing was not seen as a complete art form, he produced large numbers of original engravings and many finished drawings in chalk, ink and wash, dating from the 1790s to his old age, and preserved them carefully in albums. Mental illness became a recurring subject in a number of these drawings, as the Spanish artist represented numerous depictions of people suffering from a mental disorder and foregrounded the notion of irrationality in his graphic art. This manuscript discusses these themes in relation to Goya's pieces, focusing on elements of his biography and contemporaneous ideas from the Enlightenment period as influences for this aspect of his work.
