U arheološkom istraživanju groblja Pul Vele crikve u riječkom Starom gradu pronađeni su brojni sitni nalazi materijalne kulture koji su pokopani s pokojnicima. Među njima su jedna medaljica iz Einsiedelna i križ tipa Caravaca, pronađeni u grobu 79 datiranom u kraj 17. st.  u kojemu je pokopana žena u dobi između 40 i 50 godina. Oni su ispričali ovu priču.

Bengala, a steamer that sank in 1889 near Capo Rizzuto, Italy, was a relatively new vessel for its time, with an unusually short 18-year service life, given that steamers of the period typically operated for 30 to 40 years. Despite its brief history, SS Bengala played a significant role in the development of Italy's young merchant navy, undergoing multiple ownership changes and serving various Italian shipping companies. Employed mainly along the route to Southeast Asia, it transported Italian migrants overseas and also participated in troop raids during the Italian military expedition to Eritrea in 1887. Despite its historical significance, no iconographic material has yet been found to depict SS Bengala, and archival research conducted in Italy and England has not uncovered any naval plans, photographs, or drawings of the ship. To overcome this gap, the authors employed new technologies and historical information to create a virtual reconstruction. This research combined archival sources with underwater surveys, including a detailed 3D survey by divers and archaeologists. Archival research, including consultation of official documents, provided critical information on the ship's dimensions, superstructure, rigging, materials, and construction methods. The 3D modelling of the ship's external hull, based on precise geometric data from the wreck site, offers a first step towards virtual reconstruction. The modelling is grounded in photogrammetric surveying techniques, ensuring high accuracy in the reconstruction process. The model can be used in augmented reality (AR) applications to enhance underwater exploration, allowing divers to visualise the reconstructed ship in its original environment. Additionally, it supports museum exhibits, interactive visualisations, and educational games, making it a valuable resource for engaging the public with maritime history and archaeology.

In 2017 underwater rescue excavations at CHO "Ak-Burun Bay" were completed. Nearly 50,000 archaeological objects—primarily fragments of ceramic vessels dating from the 5th century BC to the 13th century AD—were found on 3,000 square meters of Kerch Bay floor, where the piers of the Crimean Bridge were later built. During the final stage, we determined that the total area of this site reached 75,000 square meters.

Why do people go to sea? The relationship people have with land and sea, maritime space, boats and ships are entwined and complex, shaped and molded by the marine environment, identity and heritage. This paper explores the complexity of people's relationship with the sea to question how we can understand and model seafaring in the past, and how this can be used to better understand maritime heritage today. To be meaningful, computational analysis of seafaring must be tied into relevant known seafaring and navigation practice. Without this firm basis our statistical and hypothetical models lose the ability to measure past actions. However, there are many ways to 'go to sea' and seafaring practices do not start and end on the water itself. This paper reflects upon the process of seafaring, as it relates to our understanding of navigational knowledge, mobility in practice, seafaring as social action and the influences behind people's desire to set sail. There is much we can learn from applied practices of seafaring, conducted both by practitioners and through efforts of experimental or experiential archaeology; understanding the complexity and nuance of the social aspects of seafaring guides the research questions that shape our models and shapes how we use and understand the outcomes derived from quantitative computational approaches.

What do a photograph and an archaeological artefact - for instance, ceramics from the 17th century - have in common? Whereas nobody will doubt the archaeological nature of the latter, the former is always seen as a type of record rather than an artefact. This article resorts to the opinions of several authors with education and training in Archaeology and Heritage to discuss the role of photographic objects as archaeological artefacts, highlighting their similarities with traditional artefacts. The author puts forward and challenges arguments that stress the importance of a holistic analysis of photographs, considering their visual, material and contextual aspects, comparing their production, circulation and impact to other objects, namely ceramics.

This chapter examines early globalization in the South China Sea from 500 BC to AD 500, focusing on the interconnected maritime networks that linked South and Southeast Asia. Focusing on the Isthmus of Kra as a key crossroads, the study reveals a dynamic system of trade, cultural exchange and technological transfer that challenges traditional interpretations of “Indianization.” Archaeological evidence from port-settlements such as
Khao Sam Kaeo and Khao Sek reveal complex political and economic structures characterized by cosmopolitan populations, specialized industries, and transpeninsular trade routes. These settlements produced culturally hybrid artifacts, such as ornaments and ceramics, that blend South and Southeast Asian styles. This evidence points to a “Late Prehistoric South China Sea style,” a pan-regional material culture that underscores the deep interconnectedness of the region. The chapter proposes a model of early globalization that eschews hierarchical framings such as Immanuel Wallerstein’s core-periphery model. Instead, a decentralized, systemic perspective is adopted that highlights the role of often overlooked small-scale mobile groups, including artisans, maritime nomads, traders and maritime communities. These actors acted as intermediaries, facilitating exchanges and shaping cultural identities across interconnected networks. This systemic approach defines globalization as a dynamic, multidirectional process driven by diverse participants and fluid alliances rather than elite or centralized powers. It portrays the South China Sea as a vibrant hub where local and global forces intersect, creating a mosaic of interconnected yet distinct cultural and economic practices. This systemic view enriches our  understanding of the South China Sea’s role as a center of early globalization and the intricate interplay of local and global forces that shaped its history.

In the spring of 2022, the wrecks of two cogs from the middle of the 14th century were found. The Varberg Cog 1 consists of the port side with part of the rigging preserved while the Varberg Cog 2 consists of the lower forward section of the hull. Finds such as spare parts for the ships as well as utensils and personal belongings of the crew were found in both shipwrecks.

His discoveries, reinterpretations, and prolific writings have positioned him as one of the most innovative voices in the reconstruction of Malay-Islamic civilization in the global context.

O presente trabalho visa o desenvolvimento de conhecimento sobre os contentores anfóricos de Miróbriga (Santiago do Cacém). O conjunto é significativo, quer pela importância que as ânforas nos transmitem, mas também pela sua dimensão. Trata-se de um sítio arqueológico, que pela sua natureza, se revelou complexo no que respeita a questões ligadas ao urbanismo e à arquitetura. O facto de este sítio ter uma história de investigação bastante rica levou a que uma boa parte dos materiais em estudo estejam desprovidos de contexto arqueológico. Contudo nos trabalhos de escavação mais recentes tal questão não se coloca, ou seja sempre que possível as ânforas serão vistas em estratigrafia. Os materiais serão ainda analisados, na perspetiva das redes de contacto comercial, em conjunto com as cerâmicas finas.

The Chennanur site offers a rare window into long-term cultural development in the region. The antiquities, stratigraphy and features present a continuous occupational history from the Microlithic to the Medieval Period. The well-stratified nature of the site and the presence of clear transition phases make it a key site for understanding technological and socio-cultural shifts across prehistoric and early historic South India.

The site of Çuka e Ajtoit is strategically located on an imposing hill overlooking the Pavla and Kalamas valleys a few kilometers from the present Greek-Albanian border. It is the main site of ancient Cestrine, the coastal region of ancient Epirus between Chaonia and Thesprotia. The site, noted since the beginning of the last century, is mainly known as a fortified center of the Hellenistic period, characterized by an imposing wall circuit
reinforcing the natural defenses of the impervious hillside. Since 2021, a new joint project between Sapienza University of Rome and the Albanian Institute of Archaeology has been active at Çuka e Ajtoit, aiming to shed
new light on the history and reconstruction of the site from a diachronic perspective. After systematic surveys during the first campaigns, excavation trenches in significant sectors of the site have been opened since 2022. Prominent among these is the so-called Palace, an imposing extra-urban complex along
the western slopes of the hill. This structure, consisting of multiple rooms and large open courtyards and already investigated by previous excavations, has traditionally been interpreted as a public building, a prytaneion, or a place related to the management of food commodities. Ongoing researches — both the updated survey of the site’s structures and excavations — increasingly delineate instead the complexity of its nature. In particular, 2023 excavations uncovered some stratigraphic contexts related to the abandonment of a Hellenistic nearby place of worship (3rd-mid-2nd century BCE). Based on the material it contained, its amount and characteristics, this deposit seems to be related to a public sacred space, rather than to domestic worship. The corpus of material is notable for the abundant presence of fragments of terracotta figurines, some even intentionally deposited in a cavity in the wall of the investigated structure. They are associated mainly with black-glazed pottery, together with other
ceramic classes (amphorae, coarse and common pottery). The paper focuses on ceramics from this deposit in relation to their specific context of discovery. When considered against the background of the repertoire of the regional Hellenistic pottery, some shapes found in the deposit are noteworthy for being attested elsewhere only in sacred or funerary contexts, or for the specific ritual use they may have had in sacred contexts. Moreover, many fine ware fragments, although attributable to a local production on the basis of their technical features, are distinguished from the regional morphological repertoire by some variants, details, and decorations not otherwise attested. Starting from the analysis of the votive pottery from the deposit found at Çuka e Ajtoit, the paper therefore aims to investigate the hypothesis of a local production specifically intended for sacred contexts, in an attempt to contribute to a better understanding of the material culture of this part of ancient Epirus.

Roy was an engineer with Texas Instruments, Raytheon and later Siemens in Dallas, Texas. He did systems engineering and technical training for defense and commercial programs. He had been interested in Titanic as long as he could remember. Roy used to build models such as scratch-built and conversion armor models back in the early '70's, hence his exploration of the Titanic via modeling. That model took everything he ever learned about modeling, engineering, research, and more! He was born in Michigan and retired in Plano, Texas. When asked 'Why Titanic' Roy has stated, "I first heard of the ship as a youth, probably after seeing 'A Night to Remember' on TV. My father remarked about it as something important in history. My closest tie to the ship was that my Grandfather worked doing steam engine installations and maintenance for ships and factories. My Father told me that as a 5 year-old boy, my Grandfather took him to the shipyards in Bremen, Germany in 1914. Dad remembered only 3 things; seeing the giant ribs towering in the sky, running back and forth on a huge propeller shaft, and all the workers were talking 'Titanic, Titanic!' two years after its sinking. Was that the seed? Whatever, it sure took root!" Roy was a member of the Marine Forensics Panel (MFP) of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers since around 2000. In 2007 he co-authored a paper The break-up of Titanic with Richard Woytowich of NYC Technical College under the direction of MFP chairman Bill Garzke. His claim to fame as a naval architect has been to study a 1905 textbook on naval architecture to supplement his general engineering background. He also appeared on the French TV production of "The Riddle of Titanic". Roy was a trustee of the Titanic Research and Modeling Association and a member of the Titanic Historical Society and Titanic International Society in the past. He showed the wreck models at the Titanic Historical Society Convention '97 on the Queen Mary, plus was a featured speaker, giving a presentation for fellow THS members about the real wreck site using videos borrowed from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Roy also gave talks at the Titanic Exhibition in St. Paul Minnesota in April 1999 and other locations around the country. He continued acquiring new information about the ship and the wreck until his death. viii In Roy's Words While most of the material here is largely technical, I think the draw of it all is still the people, those aboard Titanic, and those who built her. The article shows the importance of the integrated and thorough analysis of the material culture for interpreting the archaeological context. It focuses on one specific find from the underwater closed context of the shipwreck at Gnalić, the metal object with an engraved inscription. The object, the brass brazier, was probably used by the ship’s crew, most probably by its captain or owner. Research of the shipwreck has focused chiefly on the finds representing the ship’s cargo and has not focused on the objects belonging to the crew, especially the mentioned object with inscription. According to the recently acquired information, if addressed before, it could have helped decipher the object’s origin and context and serve as an essential element for reconstructing the ship’s ownership at a certain period. The article focuses on the object, inscription, and their interpretive potential. From the moment of its discovery, the engraved inscription indicated the possibility of a different interpretation than the original one, that it was a Venetian merchant ship with a Venetian crew rather than a crew that understood the Ottoman alphabet and Ottoman symbols. This idea was confirmed by reading the incised inscription and recent archival research results. Thus, based on one object and its inscription, we have the basis for showing the multiculturalism and social dynamics of the Mediterranean in the 16th century, which is also outlined in the finds from the sunken ship in question here.

The enigmatic term ploion hellenikon (Greek Boat) is known from eleven papyri from Egypt, the most ancient of which dates to AD 206-207 and the most recent to AD 581. It has been earlier suggested that this term may designate a ship built according to Greek shipbuilding tradition as opposed to an ancient Egyptian one. Other hypotheses suggest that this term could refer to a small-tonnage ship or a decked ship that can transport cargo in its hold, a feature not present in indigenous ships. Archaeologists discovered a significant number of ancient ships from the Egyptian Late and Ptolemaic periods during the excavations of the submerged city of Thonis-Herakleion in the Nile Delta. We can distinguish these ships into two distinct groups based on their constructional features. While the first group is composed of Nilotic freighters built of local woods in a very particular fashion as described by Herodotus (2.96, baris), the second one includes the hulls that relied on pegged mortise-and-tenon joints and were built mainly with imported woods. However, these ships have a number of local constructional features. The analysis of this material supports the hypothesis that the term ploion hellenikon designated a ship built in Greek tradition as opposed to the Egyptian one. The article proposes a hypothesis focusing on the major constructional differences that may have led to this distinction.

Xeropolis is a tell site on the island of Euboea, Greece just to the east of the village of Lefkandi, and was occupied from the Early to Late Bronze Age. Excavations in recent years have provided an opportunity to investigate site formation processes using geoarchaeological and geochemical techniques. Sediments derived from the tell on the southern side have been lost by coastal erosion whilst those on the north mantle the flanking slope. Of particular interest is a homogeneous and unstratified deposit of over 2m which overlies the archaeology near the southern perimeter of the summit area. The soil structure as evident in thin sections indicates a high degree of bioturbation, probably stimulated by recent manuring and cultivation. The implication is that tillage erosion has had a major impact on the morphology as well as on the surface soils of the tell. Despite such re-working and redeposition of near surface materials, it is still possible from multi-element analysis to identify the geochemical distinctiveness of six archaeological contexts (pit, house, plaster floor, alley, road and yard); pits and floors have high loadings of all elements except Pb; in contrast pits and floors have the lowest elemental concentrations.

A 2.14M length overall (LOA) flat bottom canoe (punt), was designed and constructed using locally available materials. The features of the canoe are least cost material, light weight, shallow draft and easy maneuverability. The canoe's light displacement (weight empty) was 28kg, which was less.than local canoe of same size. When placed on water a draft of 5.5cm was achieved which is 14.8% of its depth (37cm). The capacity of the canoe was 200kg, and the total production cost of N8, 700.00 which was, not beyond, the reach of an average fisher folks, or any fish farmer. The canoe was easily maneuvered when propelled by paddling as it floated at a shallow draft; this makes the canoe adequate for use on shallow water bodies such as ponds and reservoirs. Such easily maneuvered craft can also be used on pond or reservoirs for recreation which include, sport fishing, canoein

During excavations in Jena's city center (Eichplatz, fig. 1, 2) from 2003 to 2005, various remains of buildings dating from the 13th to 19th centuries were discovered. Among them was a latrine (area 35, fig. 3), which was decommissioned in the 18th century. This latrine belonged to the property at Kleine Brüdergasse 9 (lost in the war). The walled shaft measured 2.2 x 2.4 meters and was 1.65 meters deep. The backfill dates back to the 17th century. It consisted of feces in the lower section and construction rubble in the upper section. In the lower section (fig. 4), organic materials such as leather, textiles, bark, and wood were found alongside ceramics and glass. Many of the wet wood finds were covered with a sinter layer. The wood structure was only slightly damaged, and the sinter layers were firmly bonded to the wood surface.

Beberapa lokasi yang terdapat di Pulau Sumatera mempunyai hubungan erat dengan kedatangan bangsa-bangsa Asia dan Eropa, termasuk di dalamnya, India, Arab, Jepang, Portugis, Belanda, Inggris. Interaksi terhadap bangsa-bangsa tersebut meninggalkan potensi arkeologi yang besar dan tidak terbatas. Walaupun demikian, sebagian besar potensi tersebut masih belum terjamah dunia penelitian. Secara umum corak budaya yang terdapat di Indonesia dan Pulau Sumatera pada khususnya dapat dikelompokkan menjadi lima bagian, yakni budaya bercorak prasejarah, klasik, Islam, modern/barat, dan masa kini. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut sebagai salah satu Unit Pelaksana Teknis maka Balai Arkeologi Medan dengan menggunakan dana anggaran yang disediakan, melaksanakan penelitian arkeologi di berbagai tempat di Sumatera bagian utara, di wilayah kerja Balai Arkeologi Medan. Kegiatan ini berjalan setiap tahun, sesuai anggaran yang ada. Adapun tujuan kegiatan penelitian, yang merupakan tupoksi Balai Arkeologi Medan, antara lain adalah menjaring data mengenai aktivitas budaya masa lalu, dengan sasaran mengupayakan peta persebaran peninggalan arkeologis sebagai acuan bagi penelitian selanjutnya, serta pemahaman mengenai aspek kehidupan manusia masa lalu di kawasan penelitian. Semua juga terkait dengan upaya pemanfaatannya bagi berbagai keperluan lain yang memungkinkan peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat yang sekaligus pewaris objek-objek arkeologis tersebut. Kegiatan ini tentunya sejalan dengan tema sentral penelitian Balai Arkeologi Medan yang berkenaan dengan kontak dunia luar dan migrasi yang mewarnai tonggak-tonggak evolusi budaya tempatan yang khas. The Arab conquest of Syria-Palestine transformed the Levantine coast into a frontier zone, simultaneously dividing and connecting the Byzantine and Islamic worlds. This study will seek to demonstrate that the maritime frontier (thughūr al-baḥr) functioned both as a barrier and a bridge between the dār al-Islām and the dār al-ḥarb. On the one hand, the coast was a fixed physical and political boundary defended by Islamic garrisons and fleets. On the other, it was an economic and cultural interface comprised of cross-cutting social networks that bridged geographical, social, and ideological borders.

Geoarchaeology began to develop in Latin America during the 1990s, driven by geoscientists with a keen interest in this interdisciplinary field. In the 21st century, geoarchaeology has continued to grow significantly in the region due to its increasing importance in enhancing archaeological interpretations. This discipline provides a contextual framework for understanding site stratigraphy and formation processes, addressing critical questions such as whether a site is in situ or has been reworked, the significance of material associations, and the temporal resolution of assemblages, among other topics. These contributions make geoarchaeological studies essential for any archaeological research. Consequently, this discipline should be an integral part of the
undergraduate curriculum for professional archaeologists. However, due to traditional approaches in the field, geoarchaeological content—if included at all—remains scarce in Latin American universities, even in programs oering long-term degrees in Anthropology or Archaeology. This represents a significant gap that must be addressed in the near future. Since 2012, GEGAL (Grupo de Estudios Geoarqueológicos de América Latina) has worked to promote and advance geoarchaeology, striving to shape the discipline with a distinct Latin American perspective. Despite ongoing challenges, geoarchaeological research in Latin America today demonstrates considerable diversity, high quality, and growing international recognition.

As interest and opportunity in deep-sea mineral extraction grows, the increased activity poses a new threat to the underwater cultural heritage (UCH) sites in New Zealand’s deep-sea environment. Currently this environment is largely unexplored in terms of professional maritime archaeological investigation and recording, however, there are some significant shipwrecks such as the SS Ventnor, RMS Niagara, and SS Port Kembla, that have been explored by technical divers. Sites like these are both fragile and historically valuable and as such, current protection measures and potential adverse effects arising from seabed mining need to be assessed in order to understand how to offer some protection to the valuable information that lies on and below the sea floor. This chapter examines the potential risks to UCH posed by offshore resource development and reviews New Zealand’s current legislative framework, including the Resource Management Act 1991, the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014, and the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012. It highlights the regulatory gaps in the protection of UCH beyond the 12 nautical mile limit and underscores the need for urgent policy reform. With maritime archaeology still emerging as a professional discipline in New Zealand, the chapter calls for increased investment in site surveys, regulatory expertise, and public education. It advocates for a precautionary and proactive approach to offshore development that prioritises the identification, documentation, and protection of UCH as a critical component of New Zealand’s maritime heritage.

This thesis concerns the production of the ocean journey at the f i n de s i e c l e juncture of modernity, capitalism and industrialization. The steamship as a key component of the North Atlantic mediascape interacted with new modes of communication to produce a certain passenger experience. This is traced through contemporary travel literature and journalism, drawing for interpretation on critical theories of industrial society and informed by both structuralism and historical materialism. How did the steam-powered acceleration of travel affect the Atlantic crossing between Britain and North America, as it was transposed and constructed in its representations? Central issues are: the subjective alteration in dimension and distance through accelerated travel; the visual and spatial biases associated with the media forms which served to both represent and steer a dynamic "world in transitu; and the way in which the decontextualization of markets, people and information inflected the incorporation of the passenger into the industrial environment. With the increased scope of mechanical reproduction in communication and in transportation, the nineteenth-century journey became vpanoramicN: like a painted panorama it refracted correspondences between geographic, social and representational space. A detachment of 1000 to 3000 slingers which where station in the Roman province of Syria were send to northern Italy to take part in the Alpine campaign in 15 BC. Most likely they were transported across the Mediterranean. In this paper several routes, travel times etc. will be discussed. Further a critical review of written and iconographic evidence will be given.

U radu se donosi preliminarna analiza groba 13 s lokaliteta Vir -Smratina. Na navedenom lokalitetu istražena su dva sakralna objekta. Starija crkva podignuta je u 6. stoljeću, a unutar nje je, najvjerojatnije u romaničkom razdoblju, sagrađena manja crkva. Uz južni zid starije crkve nalazio se dječji grob (grob 13) u kojem je sahranjeno sedmero djece. U tom su grobu pronađene dvije fibule koje se mogu pripisati ranokršćanskom vremenu: jedna u obliku ptice i jedna pločasta fibula -bula.
