International Students Exchange

El enfoque principal de esta tesis reside en la etnografía sensorial, con una disposición que involucra todos los sentidos, dado que el objeto de estudio es la gastronomía coreana como fenómeno total, abarcando no solo los platos y sus sabores, sino también la materia prima, la técnica culinaria, los cocineros, los comensales, los restaurantes y el menú, siguiendo a Perullo (2011). Esta investigación se centra en la comida y en todo lo que ocurre en torno a ella. La pregunta que guía esta investigación es: ¿cómo se configura la estética gastronómica coreana en el barrio Patronato, en Santiago de Chile?

This presentation is part of a one week HUMANE Winter School Programme "ADVANCING GLOBAL AWARENESS, PERSONAL IMPACT, INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS' hosted by Barcelona School of Management, Universitat Pompeu Fabra.  HUMANE is the European network of higher education professionals which aims to build global networks of professionals, foster innovation in higher education services and drive professional excellence in higher education management.

У раду је представљено непосредно искуство студијске размене обављене за време пандемије. Аутор рада je пролећни семестар 2020/21. године провео у Аустрији, на Универзитету у Грацу (Universität Graz), те преноси искуства и запажања из угла иностраног студента на грачком Институту за славистику (Institut für Slawistik) у пандемијским условима. Највећи део рада бави се
организацијом наставе на Универзитету у Грацу током периода одржавања размене и предностима и недостацима које такво учење има за гостујуће студенте. Једно поглавље посвећено је сагледавању метода коришћених у настави немачког језика као страног која се у исто време одржавала при Центру за језике, плурилингвалност и предметну дидактику (Zentrum für Sprache, Plurilingualismus und Fachdidaktik) исте високошколске установе. На крају рада аутор даје завршна разматрања у вези са изнетим аргументима и закључује да је и у условима пандемије могуће доживети аутентично искуство
студентске размене и оптимално искористити онлајн-наставу за своју академску каријеру и лични развој.

Esta coletânea reúne 11 textos sobre as relações entre psicologia e educação no contexto brasileiro contemporâneo, profundamente marcado por desigualdades sociais e lutas políticas. Ao longo da leitura, são apresentadas especulações teóricas, análises de casos e relatos de pesquisa que procuram refletir sobre diversos contextos educacionais, tensões sociais e raciais no interior das instituições educacionais e trajetórias estudantis. A obra visa contribuir para a compreensão das práticas de psicólogos(as) e educadores(as) nessa zona tensa, permanentemente assombrada pela desigualdade, pela injustiça e pela violência.

This paper aims to analyse the first concrete initiative towards the construction of the Brazilian Student House at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris in the 1920s. As presented in the bill proposed by the physician, scientist, professor, and deputy Antônio Austregésilo Rodrigues de Lima to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies in 1926, the idea of a house for Brazilian artists, physicians, scholars, and professors emerged from a Franco-Brazilian network of scientists, diplomats, professors, and institutions. As we argue, the Brazilian Student House in Paris in the interwar period can be conceived as a scientific-diplomatic object, whose disputes around its idealization may be framed as both an example of scientific cooperation and competition, as well as theorized by Pierre-Bruno Ruffini. Moreover, as observed in Austregésilo’s discourses defending the project, the creation of the house would institutionalise and improve both the circulation of Brazilian scholars in Paris and the Brazilian cultural influence over France. Although the house was not built when planned, and the Maison du Brésil was inaugurated only in 1959, the analysis of this first project may contribute to further discussions on the mutual scientific and university interests between France and Brazil during the 20th century.

El siguiente trabajo presenta una tra-ducción del cuento “Miseuto Bang”미스터방(Mister Bang) (1946), de Chae Mansik, una obra clásica del periodo de la liberación de Corea aún no publicada en español. El estudio incluye un análisis interpretativo que explora el significado del cuento en el contexto histórico en que emerge y reflexiona sobre el proceso de descolonización que propone el autor desde la lente de la ficción. Este análisis pretende enfatizar la importancia histórica y cultural de esta obra y aportar a los lectores un entendimiento de su temática y su perspectiva.

This volume is a post-conference publication containing the refereed papers and abstracts of all presentations at the QS-APPLE Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 24th-26th November, 2009. There is some variation in referencing styles since the conference draws from academics who work in all discipline areas across tertiary institutions.

Both refereed papers and non-refereed conference abstracts are published in this volume.  Refereed papers are published first, prior to the abstracts. All refereed papers were subject to a blind refereeing process by at least two reviewers. Successful authors were asked to make changes according to the reviewers’ recommendations. Refereeing meets the standard for research publications.

Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Etnografi Realis terhadap mahasiswa Indonesia di Luar Negeri sebagai orang yang mengalami pertukaran nilai dan budaya. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengidentifikasi nilai baru yang diperoleh oleh mahasiswa Indonesia dengan fokus pada pengalaman etnografik para mahasiswa Indonesia dengan latar belakang Pegawai Kementerian Keuangan terpilih melalui mekanisme seleksi yang sedang maupun telah menempuh pendidikan di luar negeri melalui program beasiswa Ministerial Scholarship (MINTS). Mahasiswa Indonesia tentunya merasakan adanya perbedaan nilai dan budaya yang dibawanya dari Indonesia sebagai nilai dan budaya leluhur bangsa ketika tiba di negara studi yang pada penelitian kali ini khususnya membahas mahasiswa di negara Amerika Serikat, Australia, dan Inggris. Pemilihan responden dilakukan berdasarkan keterwakilan pada 3 (tiga) negara yang memiliki perbedaan budaya dan nilai signifikan dengan Indonesia. Proses pertemuan budaya berbeda tak jarang menimbulkan 'kejutan budaya' ('culture shock') pada seseorang ketika memasuki dunia baru yang memiliki perbedaan budaya secara signifikan. Proses adaptasi oleh para mahasiswa Indonesia tersebut dilakukan dengan sikap dan durasi waktu berbeda tiap orangnya, namun dengan nilai budaya leluhur yang telah dimilikinya turut membantu proses adaptasinya tanpa kehilangan karakter budaya sebagai identitas Bangsa Indonesia. Data penelitian ini diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam secara jarak jauh yang direkam kemudian dianalisis menggunakan metode tematik.

Mahasiswa Indonesia yang sedang melakukan program magang di KBRI Malaysia pastinya memiliki berbagai permasalahan mengenai kesulitan menyesuaikan diri di lingkungan baru. Kesulitan beradaptasi tersebut seringkali disebut dengan "culture shock" yang mana meliputi perbedaan dalam keterampilan komunikasi, lingkungan dengan lintas budaya, sistem kemandirian internal atau toleransi, dan akses terhadap sumber daya (Parrillo, 2018). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh pelatihan penyesuaian diri terhadap penurunan culture shock pada Mahasiswa Magang Indonesia di KBRI Malaysia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode pendekatan yaitu kuantitatif eksperimen dengan pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa skala dari variabel culture shock yang diadaptasi oleh Amalia (2016) dengan landasan aspek-aspek yang dikemukakan oleh Oberg (1960) yang terdiri dari 30 item pertanyaan. Teknik pengambilan sampel dalam penelitian ini menggunakan model purposive sampling dengan total 10 partisipan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan teknik analisis non-parametrik wilcoxon signed rank-test. Hipotesis dalam penelitian ini yaitu terdapat pengaruh pelatihan penyesuaian diri dalam penurunan culture shock pada mahasiswa magang Indonesia di KBRI Malaysia Kata Kunci: Culture shock, pelatihan penyesuaian diri, mahasiswa magang Indonesia Abstract. Indonesian students who are undertaking an internship program at the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia certainly have various problems regarding difficulty adjusting to a new environment. This adaptation process is often called "culture shock", which includes differences in communication skills, cross-cultural environments, systems of internal independence or tolerance, and access to resources (Parrillo, 2018). This research aims to examine the effect of adjustment training on reducing culture shock among Indonesian Internship Students at the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia. This research uses an approach method, namely a quantitative experiment with a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The instrument used in this research is a scale of the culture shock variable which was adapted by Amalia (2016) based on the aspects proposed by Oberg (1960) which consists of 30 question items. The sampling technique in this research used a purposive sampling model with a total of 10 participants. The data obtained were analyzed using the non-parametric analysis technique wilcoxon signed rank test. The hypothesis in this research is that there is an influence of adjustment training in reducing culture shock among Indonesian intern students at the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia

This paper describes how we have adapted the WISE technology and curriculum for use in an international setting. We also report on a cross-cultural collaboration between the two authors, representing the WISE project in the U.S. and its counterpart, called Viten (see ) in Norway. After introducing the WISE platform and describing our collaboration, we present a brief comparison of the Norwegian and U.S. educational systems. We then describe "Viten.no," the national level program that has grown around this effort. Next, we present our designs for a collaborative activity where students from our two countries first perform a WISE (or Viten, respectively) inquiry project concerning wolf populations and biodiversity, followed by a sequence of online discussions designed to capitalize on cultural and geographic differences for purposes of conceptual learning. Finally, we describe the outcomes of our classroom trials of this international curriculum, which are limited in scale but sufficient to allow the framing of some design principles. We close with a discussion of the implications of such curriculum, and our own current efforts to continue this line of research.

A chorus, a harmonious fusion capable of restoring that multifaceted and at the same time unitary polyhedron which is a common object of exploration, Service-Learning, opening a new path of reflection, investigation, action and training in a Glo-Cal approach, like a key to understanding and transformative intervention with respect to the challenges that globalization poses to education today. Capítulo del libro Mejores Prácticas de Vinculación Universitaria (Mariel Cárdenas, Gylmar; Medina García, Laura [eds.]) Los días 19, 20 y 21 de octubre de 2021 se llevó a cabo a través de la Dirección de Internacionalización de la Secretaría Académica la primera jornada virtual de Internacionalización ‘Be International’ con la finalidad de difundir la importancia de la internacionalización académica en un mercado laboral global dinámico y cambiante. En dicha jornada se contó con un selecto foro de personalidades expertas en el tema de la internacionalización, y destacados miembros de la comunidad estudiantil. De este último grupo, contamos con un panel de egresados de licenciatura y maestría de la Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí. Cada egresado y egresada nos habló sobre su experiencia de movilidad estudiantil y el cómo esta posibilitó una exitosa inserción en ámbitos académicos y laborales tanto a un nivel local como global. El presente artículo aborda cada caso específico y lo contextualiza en el ámbito de la vinculación en la internacionalización, a través de la movilidad estudiantil internacional.



Book chapter from Mejores Prácticas de Vinculación Universitaria (Mariel Cárdenas, Gylmar; Medina García, Laura [eds.]) On October 19th, 20th, and 21st of 2021, the first virtual Internationalization Day 'Be International' was held through International Affairs of the Academic Secretariat to disseminate the importance of academic internationalization in the dynamic and changing global labor market. There was a select forum of expert personalities on internationalization, and outstanding student community members at the event. From this last group, we had a panel of bachelor's and master's degree graduates from Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí. Each graduate talked to us about their experience in student exchange and how it successfully inserted them into academic and work environments at both a local and global level. This article addresses each specific case and contextualizes it in the field of internationalization, through international student exchange.

O objetivo deste relato e divulgar a comunidade academica a experiencia do projeto de extensao Comite Internacional da Faculdade de Odontologia da UFG (ComInt-FO/UFG). Este projeto tem como publico-alvo estudantes e professores da instituicao e visitantes e visa a fortalecer a mobilidade estudantil, ampliar a formacao do estudante e contribuir para a internacionalizacao da UFG. As principais acoes desenvolvidas pelo ComInt foram: elaboracao de material informativo para intercambistas; apoio logistico na recepcao de alunos e professores visitantes; realizacao de painel de discussao sobre mobilidade estudantil; apresentacoes de relatos de experiencias dos intercambistas enviados e recebidos, abertos a comunidade academica e atividades de divulgacao da importância, papel e acoes do ComInt junto aos alunos ingressos anualmente na FO/UFG. Esse projeto integra a equipe docente e discente da graduacao e pos-graduacao, contribuindo para o processo de internacionalizacao ativa e passiva da UFG.

The Community Action Programme for Education and Training for Technology (COMETT) played a key role in paving the way for increased cooperation between the member states of the European Community (EC) in the field of education and in the promotion of intra-Europe mobility. In this article, COMETT is considered as a non-traditional education and training programme for solving economic challenges in the context of technological change that was focused on the training of a highly skilled workforce. The process of setting the agenda for COMETT is studied through an analysis of official EC policy documents and archival material from the EU's historical archives in Florence. Our analysis suggests that the challenge posed by new information technologies acted as a catalyst for a new approach to education governance that was based on closer cooperation between European universities and industry. Promoting intra-Europe mobility among highly skilled workers and students was a key part of the programme, which defined an economic and social strategy for Europe in response to technological change. Educational and social goals were secondary in the design and implementation of the COMETT programme, which, first and foremost, was motivated by the EC agenda to boost the competitiveness of European industry.

This roundtable discussion was conducted in July 2023 at Ritsumeikan University's College of International Relations between Professor Akihiko Kimijima and several of the first generation of the College faculty responsible for teaching in the Global Studies (GS) and American University-Ritsumeikan Joint Degree (JD) programs. The discussion covers a range of topics including: the history of the College of International Relations, the creation and development of the GS and JD programs, the Japanese university sector and system, hybridity within the development of student cultures within international programs, the 'practice' of International Relations within an educational setting, and the history and changing interpretations of the concept of 'internationalisation' within Japanese higher education. The content also interacts with broader themes connected to Japanese society, Japanese academia, and Japan's role in the international environment. As a central figure in the creation of both the GS and JD programs, Kimijima-sensei's experience and opinions on these matters will be of significant scholarly interest to current and future faculty within the College of International Relations, and for future creators and managers of international or English medium degrees, both in Japan and overseas.

This study aims to investigate the contributing factors that make returning exchange students' readjustment in their home culture difficult and lead them to feel reverse culture shock and the coping strategies they make use of to mitigate this reverse culture shock. Using purposive and snowball sampling, the data was gathered through a mixed method approach, including a questionnaire with 16 exchange alumni and a semi structured interview with 7 of them. The results of the study showed that most participants experienced difficulty readjusting due to different reasons, namely the unhealthy comparisons they made between their host and home cultures and the reverse homesickness and alienation they encountered in their home culture. The study also indicated two main coping strategies that students relied on to reduce their reverse culture shock: processing and accepting that they have become different after their exchange and staying in touch with fellow exchange alumni.

La Comunidad Valenciana es una zona geografica en la que oficialmente coexisten dos lenguas, el valenciano y el castellano, y la cual cuenta con un sistema educativo en el que se ensena, prioritariamente, el ingles como lengua extranjera o tercera lengua, y el frances como optativa en la etapa Secundaria, seguida de otras lenguas como el aleman, el chino o el italiano. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many universities suddenly shifted online from the 2020-2021 school year. While the technological tools utilized depended on the situation, many universities turned to Zoom as a viable real-time online learning solution. One particular benefit of the Zoom service compared to others (at the time) was the breakout room functionality, which could serve to simulate classroom group work. However, the breakout rooms also brought about novel challenges. This paper thus presents strategies the authors have found useful in managing breakout rooms, based on student-centered data collected during a year of emergency online learning in English medium content courses. The writers recommend the following practical strategies to improve breakout room classroom practice: (1) make student feedback integral classroom practice, (2) develop strategies to promote English use in breakout rooms, (3) assign roles to allocate responsibility, (4) provide clear instructions for breakout room tasks, (5) build confidence through scaffolding, and (6) allocate groups mindfully.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused universities worldwide to close campuses, forcing millions of teachers and students to resort to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) and learning. Though necessary, the sudden move to remote delivery marked a significant departure from the standards and norms in distance education. In Korea, the pandemic coincided with the start of the 2020 academic year. Though ERT was new and unplanned during the first semester of the year, it became Sustained Remote Teaching (SRT) in the second. Through the lens of performance improvement theory, we sought to determine if students' experiences and perceptions with learning remotely via SRT would change over time as a result of institutional preparedness and faculty support/experience. In total, 140 (Spring) and 93 (Fall) exchange students rated their perceptions of Teaching and Learning Processes, Student Support, and Course Structure with their ERT/SRT learning experiences via an electronic survey. An independent-samples one-way ANOVA indicated several statistically significant benchmarks, though results are interpreted as minor real world improvement. Implications for ERT/SRT policy and future research in the context of specific student groups are discussed.

This study positions cultural exchange students at the core  of cultural diplomacy and argues that those students can become potential agents of soft power by making them appreciate cultural differences and developing their intercultural competence. In other words, this study aims to report on the role of cultural exchange in developing students’ intercultural competence. A mixed-method approach was used to collect the data, including a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. 16 former exchange students  of  the  YES  (Youth Exchange  Scholarship)  Program  were  invited  to  complete  a  questionnaire  related  to  their  cultural exchange experience. Then, seven of them were selected to take part in the semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study showed  that the development of participants’ intercultural awareness and abilities is largely positive in consideration of the positive perception of the host culture and the authentic cultural exchange in which they took part. The Community Action Programme for Education and Training for Technology (COMETT) played a key role in paving the way for increased cooperation between the member states of the European Community (EC) in the field of education and in the promotion of intra-Europe mobility. In this article, COMETT is considered as a non-traditional education and training programme for solving economic challenges in the context of technological change that was focused on the training of a highly skilled workforce. The process of setting the agenda for COMETT is studied through an analysis of official EC policy documents and archival material from the EU's historical archives in Florence. Our analysis suggests that the challenge posed by new information technologies acted as a catalyst for a new approach to education governance that was based on closer cooperation between European universities and industry. Promoting intra-Europe mobility among highly skilled workers and students was a key part of the programme, which defined an economic and social strategy for Europe in response to technological change. Educational and social goals were secondary in the design and implementation of the COMETT programme, which, first and foremost, was motivated by the EC agenda to boost the competitiveness of European industry.

Online learning has traditionally relied on asynchronous text-based communication. The COVID-19 pandemic, though, has provided many faculty members with new and/or additional experience using synchronous video-based communication. Questions remain, though, about how this experience will shape online teaching and learning in the future. We conducted a mixed method study to investigate faculty perceptions of using synchronous video-based communication technology. In this paper, we present the results of our inquiry and implications for future research and practice.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal, father of neuroscience, won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1906 for his neural theory. Besides being a great histologist, researcher, and teacher, he showed interest in photography, philosophy, astronomy, chess, and hypnosis. He wrote very relevant scientific and biographical works as well as his Vacation stories. Five science fiction tales, five short stories with an educational purpose that mix scientific concepts, fiction, and some irony, and where microscopy and microbiology are always present. These stories raise difficult social or moral dilemmas that are often motivated by advances in science or an incorrect scientific education of the population. Cajal sought to improve that education and banish false beliefs and superstitions.

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed significant gaps in institutions' ability to maintain education under crisis conditions, which is now commonly referred to as Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). A critical analysis of the literature reveals that ERT is a label that does not differentiate adequately between the different ways ERT manifested worldwide and over time. In this conceptual paper, we analyze empirical research on remote teaching conducted over single, double, and three+ learning terms. Our analysis shows not only multiple possible phases of remote education but also different stages, scopes, and pathways between them. The proposed model in this paper can be used to analyze current literature, ground future research, and serve as a foundation for developing protocols and practices to proactively maintain education when exigent circumstances demand remote teaching over the short-, mid-, and long-term.

RESUMO-Diálogos Transculturais-Diálogo Transcultural constrói relacionamentos, que se transforma em conteúdo para uma comunidade criar arte colaborativa com base no diálogo do grupo. Como professora de arte-educação nos Estados Unidos, comecei a facilitar Diálogos Transculturais em 2007 com alunos e colegas na Makerere Universidade em Kampala, Uganda, e na Universidade de Helsinki. Neste texto apresento teorias, conceitos, estratégias e exemplos de Diálogo Transcultural sobre cultura visual contemporânea, práticas culturais em relação a lugares particulares e uma pedagogia projetada para corroer suposições, ignorância e mal-entendidos. As estratégias pedagógicas do Diálogo Transcultural consideram posicionalidade, subjetividade, conhecimento situado, aprendizagem transformadora, intra-ação, ponto de vista especulativo, e metodologia difrativa. O processo dialógico elicita visões microculturais que são específicas e únicas, mas são compartilhadas dentro ou através do conhecimento macro-cultural. O ato de construção de significado das práticas microculturais pode sustentar bem como mudar as crenças macro-culturais. Diálogo Transcultural é crítica cultural performativa, arte colaborativa e comentário sobre obras de arte por aqueles envolvidos no Diálogo Transcultural. In the Hungarian agro-food sector SMEs have a key role but regarding the tendency of the performance of SME sector, comparing to EU-28 average, the performance of Hungarian SME sector has gradually worsened between 2008 and 2015 while the EU average has an increasing trend. ICT can help enterprises and this article is an overview of the ICT situation of Hungarian SMEs. It is important to analyse in detail the ICT usage characteristics of agro SMEs in the food supply chain because these ICT devices, tools and services are crucial to smooth the information flow within the chain. For all these reasons our work aims to find out how Hungarian agro-food SMEs use ICT and how ICT adoption affect their business procedures, performance and development. A striking observation to emerge from the data comparison is the difference among SMEs and large enterprises regarding the usage of the different basic and advanced ICT solutions. A much bigger percent of large companies use advanced ICT then SMEs and mainly small enterprises are lagging behind as the attitudes of medium sized enterprises are rather similar to the large ones. In Hungary small enterprises in agro-food industry are in difficult financial state and for them free Cloud Computing services can offer good opportunities as they do not have initial costs. ICT adoption is very important to them as ICT sector is a dynamically growing sector and if customers and partners of an enterprise adapt faster to these technological innovations, it may have a negative effect on the different processes, performance and financial results of the organisation. In this article our aim was to determine the main question groups for our questionnaire which focus mainly on ICT solutions supporting the quality of communication and relationship between partners. As the basic IT tools are available in the major part even in the SMEs besides large companies, the two main issues will be the usage of advanced online services and the usage of high quality ICT solutions.

Subsidies can come from domestic and EU sources, and they aim to cover costs and serve development goals. We have examined subsidies from two aspects: from the micro- and the macroeconomic approach. On the one hand, regarding the macroeconomic impact, we look at how their extent and components changed between 2004 and 2017, and also whether the impact of developments within the framework of cohesion subsidies on the budget was significant. Hungary has been among the net beneficiary Member States since its accession to the EU. Background: The end of 2019 marked the beginning of the global pandemic COVID-19. With this global issue, all the fields of society became stagnant. The education system is no exception to it. Education sector suffered as students were sent back to homes and schools, colleges and universities were shut down. But steps were taken and the education teaching system was shifted from offline to online mode. This research project examines the educational pedagogy which has been adapted in online mode of teaching due to post COVID-19 lockdown. It seeks to discover the pros and cons of online teaching vis-a-vis the ways of offline conduct of classes. The data for the project has been gathered in the form of an online survey in which both teachers and students were given questionnaires which are used to map and understand different pedagogical choices during online teaching. It also tries to highlight the comparative value, compatibility and usefulness of digital mode of learning.

Modern  public  diplomacy  scholarship  recognises  the  role  of  exchange  programmes  as  a  public  diplomacy  tool  for  both  sending  and  receiving  countries.  However,  the  vast  majority  of  scholarship  focuses  on  the  exchange  experiences  of  international  students  in  officially  or  technically  English-speaking  countries.  The  internationalisation  of  higher  education  and  competition  in  the  international  higher education market have led to the proliferation of English language higher education programmes in  countries  where  English  is  not  considered  a  native  language.  This  paper  is  an  attempt  to  fill  the  research gap by examining English-language higher education programmes in South Korea and China from a public diplomacy perspective. By conducting a series of in-depth interviews with students and professors/administrators  representing  English  language-based  programmes,  the  study  aims  to  provide  a  preliminary  understanding  of  whether  such  educational  programmes  function  as  public  diplomacy  for South Korea and China. The research found that, in contrast to the case of China, there was limited cooperation between Korean scholars and international scholars based in Korea. Friendships and networks with local students were not strong in either country. Overall, however, students in both South Korea and China were satisfied with their experience in the country, which may, at least in part, contribute to perceptions of the host country. The paper concludes that English language-based programmes are indeed a public diplomacy tool for South Korea and China in the selected cases. Further generalisations require additional investigations.

Despite technological innovation and the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a dearth of experimental research on the effects of virtual instruction. Using an original field experiment conducted among 100 UAE and USA students, we investigate how a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project on international development shapes social trust, tolerance, and political engagement. Using an experimental design, UAE-based students were randomly assigned to a group with either their classmates or, through online interaction, USA-based students, while in a quasi-experimental design, USA-based students collaborated online with UAE-based students. UAE-based COIL students developed greater interpersonal trust in their society, but a reduced desire to make American friends as a result of the exchange. USA-based students developed a greater desire to follow international issues. Proposing a social identity theory (SIT) of social capital formation, we argue that by taking part in the COIL project, the UAE-based students, who live in a society in which social identity is highly salient, redefined their social in-group boundaries and came to see members of their own diverse society more warmly while perceiving greater differences from Americans. By illustrating COIL’s complex effects, our research extends the social capital literature and offers insights for enhancing the benefits of COIL.

This case study examines the adaptation of an existing online, asynchronous faculty development resource at the University of New Mexico to support the unanticipated need for all instructors to teach remotely starting in spring 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The course-entitled Evidence-Based Practices for Teaching Online (EBPTO)-was previously utilized to support instructor transitions to distance education by applying constructivist principles to the development of evidence-based online teaching practices. The course was adapted to address institutional and instructor needs as a result of the pandemic, including increasing facilitation resources. The largest EBPTO cohort, with 117 participants, began in June 2020. Data were collected through a reflective journal administered at the mid-point and an end-of-course survey. Analysis of the reflective journal provided insight into participants' learning experience in terms of key "takeaways," LMS tools that they had the opportunity to practice, and "lingering questions" that they had. The top 3 takeaways were the usefulness of course mapping, the usefulness of backwards design, and the deepening familiarity with LMS tools. Results from the end-of-course survey showed positive feedback from participants regarding perceived achievement of the course learning objectives, even after scaling the course to accommodate the large number of instructors moving to remote instruction.

Mentoring ini sangat dibutuhkan sebagai wadah untuk berbagi informasi dan mempersiapkan aplikasi beasiswa. Program ini dilaksanakan secara online dengan menggunakan grup WhatsApp dan didukung dengan aplikasi zoom. Secara umum program ini meliputi tahap persiapan, pelaksanaan dan evaluasi. Pada tahap persiapan, tim menyiapkan kurikulum dan membuka pendaftaran. Pada tahap pelaksanaan, dilakukan diskusi dan konsultasi. La formación de trabajadores sociales se ha desarrollado en contextos nacionales. Nuevas realidades exigen repensar Trabajo Social desde un contexto internacional tanto en los contenidos académicos como en las prácticas de Trabajo Social. Este artículo discute la importancia y necesidad del intercambio internacional en la formación de los profesionales del Trabajo Social. Estudiantes y docentes cuentan con recursos, en muchos casos tienen también experiencias internacionales anteriores que pueden contribuir al desarrollo de esas actividades enriqueciendo así contenidos y perspectivas del Trabajo Social. Esas contribuciones se ilustran en este artículo con ejemplos recogidos en las actividades de intercambio internacional realizadas entre Chile, Suecia y otros países de América Latina.
