Ecco un saggio su Federico II di Svevia quasi introvabile anche nelle biblioteche pubbliche. Antonino De Stefano (Trapani, 1880 - Palermo, 1964) è stato tra i primi storici a rilanciare la figura dello Svevo nell'Italia di inizio Novecento. Siciliano, docente di Storia medievale, dal 1924 ha insegnato nell'ateneo di Bologna, dal 1936 al 1956 all'Università di Palermo. I suoi studi sui normanni in Sicilia e sull'età federiciana sono tuttora punto di riferimento per gli studiosi. Come ha scritto lAntonio Pivato nel Dizionario biografico di Treccani, "l'originaria ispirazione religiosa sembra averlo indirizzato verso la figura di Federico II e la sua età. È stato in effetti osservato che il Federico II del De Stefano  non è il personaggio scettico in materia di fede, così come era stato dipinto da Y.-L. Huillard-Bréholles, ma il credente messo sotto accusa da tutta una tradizione leggendaria per dare contenuto alle accuse di eresia mosse da Gregorio IX e Innocenzo IV. Gli studi sull'età federiciana, cui il De Stefano attese per circa un quindicennio, dall'inizio degli anni Venti fino alla prima metà del decennio successivo, aprirono allo studioso siciliano gli interessi per l'ultima fase della sua attività: quella legata in particolare alla storia della Sicilia e che, inauguratasi con l'opera su Federico III (1937), sarebbe proseguita per circa un quarto di secolo attraverso numerose indagini dedicate ai rappresentanti più significativi dell'umanesimo siciliano.

Frederick II: from mythomoteur to mythophantom. Aboout identity, mythologization, nationalism and regionalism

In many areas, whether it be places, regions or countries, there is a need to identify with something that has happened in the past. In this way people distinguish themselves from other countries, peoples and regions. Important people and events in the past are often used as legitimation for nationalist sentiments. This is where mythologization is in wait. This article, based on historiographical research, deals with mythologization around the person of Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) in Italy and Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries. The question here is to what extent Frederick II is a mythomoteur, someone who generates myths, from which an ethnic group derives its right to exist. This can be done by means of identification in a positive way by emphasizing the good in him and by worshiping him as a person (Dr. Jekyll) or in a negative way, by turning away from him or by vilifying him (Mr. Hyde). Both aspects can contribute to strengthening identity and nationalism.
On the basis of three controversies (Licinio/Brando vs. Russo, Sybel vs Ficker and Rader vs. Houben), the role of Frederick II in the discussion on identity and nationalism in Italy and Germany is examined. We look at the appreciation and merits of the person, which role he played in the process of state and nation building in Italy and Germany and whether he can be considered an Italian or a German. The conclusion is that Frederick II does not meet the characteristics of a mythomoteur. This concept requires an ethnic component that is virtually absent in Frederick II. There is, however, Frederick II as a mythophantom: an imagined phenomenon that is not based on historical facts and does not aim to bind ethnic groups, but which can be used to distinguish oneself from others in economic, political, social, cultural and scientific terms and thus allowing for identification.

Nella Lombardia dell' XI e del XII secolo Nel periodo in questione le battaglie campali tra truppe ordinate secondo precisi schieramenti (quelle di cui parla la storia che si studia a scuola) erano l'eccezione. La maggior parte dell'intensissima attività degli eserciti comunali si esplicava in azioni minori; era questa la vera realtà della guerra. In queste situazioni le forme di lotta erano meno convenzionali e i ruoli di fanti e cavalieri spesso erano poco o per nulla separati e la cooperazione era diretta, pur all'interno dei compiti specifici della singola arma. Inoltre, il frequente contegno poco eroico dei guerrieri a cavallo, da un lato ridimensiona l'alone di prestigio che un'enorme produzione letteraria ha tessuto intorno alla loro figura, dall'altro conferisce loro maggiore umanità. E rende meno profondo, anche tecnicamente, il solco che separa il combattente a cavallo da quello a piedi. Emerge, dall'esame dei documenti dell'epoca, una cosa interessante che riguarda i tiratori. Nel 1037, sotto le mura di Milano, assistiamo allo scontro tra cittadini e truppe regie; nella prima fase prevale decisamente, da entrambe le parti, l'uso di armi da tiro, le quali continuano ad avere una parte importante anche nella seconda fase della battaglia. Dal testo che ne parla non si riesce a distinguere l'azione dei fanti da quella dei cavalieri; sembra che le armi venissero impiegate, nel particolare frangente, da tutti i combattenti. E' certo che arcieri, frombolieri e balestrieri, gli specialisti nell'impiego delle armi che colpivano a distanza, appartenevano agli stati sociali inferiori; è pure radicata la convinzione che il cavaliere rifuggisse da queste armi per ragioni di etica cavalleresca. Ebbene, almeno per i tempi anteriori alla fine del XII secolo, sembra non fosse proprio così. Nel corso della prima Crociata Goffredo di Buglione manovra con micidiale abilità la balestra; Federico I il Barbarossa, nel 1158 all'assedio di Milano, compie un giro di ricognizione e, per controllare se difensori siano o no installati su un antico monumento "imbraccia un arco, si fa sotto e, lanciata di lontano una freccia, si persuade che il nemico è appostato sul sommo". Nel gennaio 1160, all'assedio di Crema, lo stesso Imperatore, dalla gigantesca torre mobile, uccide di sua mano molti degli assediati. Sembra dunque che tra le abilità sportive e militari richieste allora da una completa educazione guerriera, non ancora cavalleresca e cortese, fosse compreso l'uso delle armi da getto, cioè una delle qualità proprie di un buon fante.

Prima figlio amato e vezzeggiato di Re Federico Guglielmo, che ne vuole fare un soldato, degno della corona prussiana, poi giovane uomo osteggiato dallo stesso padre che non ne approva la sensibilità, il buon gusto e l'amore sconfinato per la musica e le arti. Finalmente libero dalla tirannia del padre, che sa in ogni caso, quale degno erede abbia lasciato, eccolo giovane re affascinante, che incanta e nello stesso tempo sconvolge tutti con la sua apertura di vedute e con la crescente e sfacciata abilità militare che turba i piani e il sonno di tutti i sovrani d'Europa. Diversamente da tutti, Federico non ama né il fasto né la pompa e trova il suo "nido" nel piccolo palazzo di Sans Souci che si fa costruire nei pressi di Potsdam. Qui, in compagnia delle sue piccole levriere italiane, porta avanti il lavoro praticamente da solo, quando può si gode la compagna degli adorati amici e fa musica suonando l'amatissimo flauto.

En 1763 furent publiées par François-L.-Cl. Marin les OEuvres du philosophe bienfaisantnom sous lequel se dissimulait sans excessive humilité l'ancien roi de Pologne Stanislas I er , devenu le protecteur éclairé de la Lorraine. L'année suivante parut sous l'adresse nue de « Paris », en quatre volumes, une autre édition que conserve le fonds Van Hulthem de la Bibliothèque royale (cote VH 13578). Cette édition sort à n'en pas douter des presses du libraire liégeois Jean-François Bassompierre. Son identification repose sur des éléments qui mettent en jeu divers critères et différentes sources servant au repérage de la production clandestine issue de la principauté. L'ouvrage, à ce titre, mérite peut-être qu'on lui consacre quelques pages. Le catalogue des collections Capitaine attire d'abord l'attention sur cet ouvrage par ses numéros 22-23 de l'inventaire des gravures, qui enregistrent « deux culs de lampe mythologiques faisant partie de l'ouvrage intitulé : OEuvres du philosophe bienfaisant. Paris 1764, in-8 1 ». L'un d'eux figure également dans les Collections artistiques de l'Université de Liège. Ces estampes, signées « de Boubers », ouvrent en effet les volumes en question. Ce n'est pas ici l'endroit d'essayer à nouveau d'identifier plus précisément les membres de la famille Boubers qui ont pu collaborer à l'illustration des éditions liégeoises, dans la seconde moitié du XVIII e siècle. On rappellera qu'une Éducation des filles et un Ami des filles publiés par Bassompierre en 1760 et 1761 ont respectivement un portrait de Fénelon et un frontispice signés de ce nom 2 . Celui-ci réapparaît en 1764 au bas de gravures figurant dans deux éditions de « Jean-Louis de Boubers, le jeune, imprimeur, rue du Pont d'Avroi »productions inconnues à de Theux 3 . The following contains two translations:-a relatively free version of two Latin letters:from the Pope to the King of England with reply about a crusade 1 and-an equally free version of the French text 2 of the deposition of a servant, Bernard de Vignolles, about the attempt to assassinate Henry VII in 1496. 3 What these two events have in common is that they never took place. Julius' letter to Henry is clearly in response to a letter from Henry, alluded to in Henry's reply to the Pope, calling for action against the Ottoman Empire. 4 In the first sentence of Henry's reply (§ 5) the words 'we had given' (dederamus) may suggest that the letter did not go through the normal postal channels but was delivered in some other way. It seems a little odd, in view of the universal joy it seems to have occasioned in the Vatican, that no copy of this communication has survived. It is not clear if Henry's first letter was addressed to all the European princes or only to the Pope. In the 15th and 16th cent. growing Turkish power had gained control of the main trading routes between Europe and Western Asia power and finally put an end to the Byzantine Empire with its conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The Ottoman-Venetian War (1499-1503) ended in favour of the Ottoman Empire and left the Turks in control of the Aegean, the Adriatic and the Ionian seas. Nell’ambito degli interventi di manutenzione ANAS lungo la S.S.16-Tangenziale Ovest di Foggia, in seguito alle prescrizioni impartite dalla Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per le Province di Barletta-Andria-Trani e Foggia, è stato predisposto un piano di indagini archeologiche preventive. Durante i lavori in località Pantano è stata individuata una porzione perimetrale di un fossato neolitico funzionale in una fase avanzata del Neolitico Antico (facies Lagnano da Piede/Masseria La Quercia) e l’inizio del Neolitico medio (facies Passo di Corvo tipico). In località Mezzana Tagliata, nei pressi del limite meridionale dell’aggere di delimitazione di Arpi, sono state rinvenute due sepolture alla cappuccina. Nel corso delle indagini preventive è stato possibile documentare e ampliare le informazioni in merito alla frequentazione antica del territorio periurbano della città di Foggia.

The article deals with internal multilingualism in Gallo-Romance lyric tradition between langue d'oc and langue d'oïl. In particular, the object of study is a Crusade song by the old French trouvère Hugues de Berzé, handed down by only two chansonniers, D a and H, both lyric collections of poems in langues d'oc. The unique linguistic form of the text, analyzed here in detail, shows heterogeneous linguistic traits, that previous critics have traced back to an Occitan revision of a text originally written in French by copyists accustomed to dealing with texts in the language of the Midi. The proposed study shows a varied framework of possible linguistic influences, going so far as to trace the rows of stratigraphy of sources and intercepting a possible Franco-Italian antecedent common to the two copies.

Exaggerations aside: "Royal and papal interests were largely compatible" to a degree that royal and chapter interests had not been. A final chapter compares the developments in England with those of France, Scotland, and Italy. "The English story of the rise of electoral freedom and the transition to papal provision is also a pan-European narrative" (225). Yet the distinctive features of England are also noted. Episcopal Appointments in England is an exemplary work of church history written with a mastery of a wide range of primary sources (from canon law to chronicles) in highly engaging and accessible style. It reminded me of the early work of Robert Brentano. I did wonder, though, whether the thirteenth-century debate in theology faculties about episcopal versus papal jurisdiction over mendicant privileges might have been a contributing factor to the fourteenth century claim to provision. The author ends (233) with a powerful comparison between medieval England and modern China where the governmentcontrolled "Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association" has sought (like English kings in the twelfth century) to appoint bishops without papal approval, as it sees the involvement of Rome as, necessarily, a political threat. Perhaps this excellent book should be translated into Chinese.

Quiconque veut comprendre le renversement de tendance politique de 1977 et la crise que traverse Israël en 2023, doit remonter aux événements de Wadi-Salib (un quartier insalubre de Haïfa) où vivaient entassés dans des conditions insupportables 15 000 juifs Marocains pour la plupart. Parce qu'ils réclamaient du pain et du travail, leurs manifesatations ont été sévèrement réprimées.

Quiconque veut comprendre le renversement de tendance politique en Israël survenu en 1977 et jusqu'aux manifestations de 2023 doit se reporter  à l'insurrection de Wadi-Salib, un quartier insalubre de Haïfa où eurent lieu des manifestations  réclamant du pain et du travail. Manifestations sévèrement réprimées par la police israèlienne. Mon étude relie 1977 et 2023 à cet événement.

L'epistola II: tecniche del dictamen e tradizione consolatoria Abstracts: L'articolo focalizza l'attenzione sui caratteri tecnici dell'epistola II, in connessione con la teoria e la pratica del dictamen del XIII secolo. Innanzitutto, l'indagine presta particolare attenzione alle partes dell'epistola e propone una nuova divisione in capitoli, sulla base della normativa retorica. Poi esamina il rapporto con la tradizione della consolatio epistolare, attraverso raffronti con i grandi modelli, soprattutto quelli contenuti nel quarto libro delle summae di Tommaso di Capua e di Pier della Vigna, che rivelano un'inventiva molto maggiore. L'ultima parte è riservata all'uso del cursus, che è diverso rispetto a quello della curia papale o della cancelleria imperiale sveva. Lo studio approfondito e dettagliato delle tecniche retoriche permette di far emergere alcune peculiari differenze (forse cercate volontariamente da Dante) con l'illustre stilus modernus dell'epoca: quello della curia Romana, caratterizzato dalla ricca inventiva nella transumptio e soprattutto dal dominio del cursus velox. This paper focuses on the second epistle's technical features, with reference to the theory and practice of 13th-century dictamen. First, the epistle's partes are approached and a new chapter division, based on rhetorical norms, is proposed. Then, the author scrutinizes the relationship with the tradition of the epistolary consolation by means of comparing Dante's epistle with the main models of his time, and notably with those contained in the fourth book of the Summae by Thomas de Capua and Petrus de Vinea, which reveal a greater inventiveness. The last part of the article deals with the cursus, which is very different from the one used by the papal curia or by the imperial chancery. The in-depth and detailed study of such rhetorical technique sheds light on some peculiar differences (perhaps voluntarily introduced by Dante) between his style and the illustrious stilus modernus used in that period: the prose style of the curia Romana, characterized by the rich inventiveness in the transumptio and, above all, by the extended use of the cursus velox.
