Evidence Based Design

In a global effort to design better hospital buildings for people and organizations, some design principles are still surrounded by great mystery. The aim of this online study was to compare anxiety in an existing single-bed inpatient hospital room with three redesigns of this room in accordance with the principles of Golden Ratio, Feng Shui, and Evidence-Based Design. In this online multi-arm parallel-group randomized trial participants were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1) to one of four conditions, namely Golden Ratio condition, Feng Shui condition, Evidence-Based Design condition, or the control condition. The primary outcomes were anxiety, sense of control, social support, positive distraction, and pleasantness of the room. Between June 24, 2022, and August 22, 2022, 558 individuals were randomly assigned to one of the four conditions, 137 participants to the control condition, 138 participants to the Golden Ratio condition, 140 participants to the Feng Shui condition, and 143 participants to the Evidence-Based Design condition. Compared with baseline, participants assigned to the Evidence-Based Design condition experienced less anxiety (mean difference -1.35, 95% CI -2.15 to -0.55, Cohen's d = 0.40, p < 0.001). Results also showed a significant indirect effect of the Feng Shui condition on anxiety through the pleasantness of the room (B = -0.85, CI = -1.29 to -0.45) and social support (B = -0.33, CI = -0.56 to -0.13). It addresses the transition from the scientific communication format (20–30 minutes, expert audience) to the university teaching format (90–120 minutes, heterogeneous audience), proposing evidence-based strategies to manage attention, foster participation, adapt content for new generations of learners, and maintain cognitive coherence without compromising disciplinary rigor.

Through the lens of design, this research investigates the intricate dynamics between human needs and the natural world. It aims to optimize spatial design for human well-being while fostering a mutually beneficial connection with the environment, enriching lives by creating living spaces that resonate with our innate human nature, promoting mental and physical well-being, environmental sustainability, and a sense of interconnectedness with the natural world.

By utilizing the vernacular architecture of Argentina's conventillos, a new mixed-use development offers a new opportunity to explore a new, more grounded way of living, integrating vegetation at the block, courtyard, unit, room and human scales.

BackgroundDental disease is highly prevalent in people with stroke. Stroke survivors regard oral hygiene as an important, yet neglected, area. The aim was to explore experiences of and barriers to oral care, particularly in relation to oral hygiene practice and dental attendance, among stroke survivors in the community.MethodsThis was a qualitative study incorporating a critical realist approach. Interviews were conducted with community‐dwelling stroke survivors requiring assistance with activities of daily living, and focus groups were held with health and care professionals. Interviews and focus groups were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The Knowledge Alliance for Evidence-Based Urban Practices (KAEBUP) set out to develop an international educational and training model that enables participants to engage directly with professional environments. Its central aim was to demonstrate how research can serve as the foundation for innovative professional practices, and to explore what businesses in the fields of planning, architecture, and urban design require from academia.
KAEBUP brought together higher education institutions (HEIs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and enterprises from various European cities. All partners shared a strong commitment to evidence-based design and a mutual interest in strengthening the interface between academia and business. This collaboration was instrumental in addressing
current societal and educational needs, while also contributing to the development of future-oriented educational systems. The project sought to equip students with the skills required to thrive in professional contexts and to inspire academic staff to innovate in both teaching and research through closer ties with practice.

Engelli bireyler için geliştirilebilecek çözümler ve tasarlanacak uygun donanım ve ekipmanlarla onların herhangi bir yardım almadan yaşamlarına devam etmeleri sağlanabilir. Bu tür düzenlemeler yasal bir zorunluluktan dolayı yapılmak yerine, engellilerin konforunu artırmak için gereklidir. Bu çalışmada, tekerlekli sandalye kullanan engellilere yönelik bir iç mekân düzenleme projesi önerilmektedir. Projeye başlarken engelli bireylere yönelik daha önce yapılmış araştırma ve projeler detaylı olarak incelenmiş ve birden fazla fonksiyonu karşılayabilecek kompakt bir ürünün hazırlanması amaçlanmıştır. Sonuçta ortaya çıkan ürün hedeflenen ihtiyaçları karşılayacak düzeyde olup, birçok fonksiyonu içermekte ve tekerlekli sandalye kullanıcılarının kolayca kullanabileceği niteliktedir.

Urban green spaces are vital to the health, equity, and resilience of cities, offering multiple benefits for well-being, climate adaptation, and social
cohesion. In Nicosia, Cyprus, where green infrastructure accounts for
just 21% of the city’s area, there is considerable potential to enhance the
accessibility, distribution, and proximity of public green spaces and their
amenities to better serve all residents. This Policy Brief, developed through
the TWIN2EXPAND project, draws on spatial analysis and stakeholder
engagement to examine the Pedieos Linear Park as a case study, highlighting both the strengths and limitations of current green space planning in Cyprus.

The 14 km-long Pedieos Linear Park, which extends across three municipalities in Nicosia, currently reaches around 19% of the city’s population within a 15-minute walking radius. Yet, large high-density neighbourhoods around it remain underserved. A new Strategic Masterplan for the park introduces promising upgrades, such as additional entrances, improved connections, and expanded facilities, but leads to only modest improvements in overall accessibility. Furthermore, disparities persist in the distribution of on-site amenities and their proximity to surrounding communities. This significant urban green infrastructure holds great potential to improve urban health and resilience, yet remains underutilised, even with the planned enhancements.

To fully unlock the potential of urban green spaces in Cyprus, targeted policy action is needed. This brief proposes a strategy built on four key principles: Proximity (ensuring walkable access and equitable amenity distribution), Diversity (providing a range of functions and amenities), Connectivity (linking green areas through mobility networks), and Stakeholder Engagement (involving communities in planning, design and assessment of proposed developments).

This brief is intended to support policymakers, local authorities, and urban
planners in making strategic, evidence-based decisions to ensure that green space access in Cyprus becomes truly equitable, inclusive, and accessible for all.

The interior design process often follows a traditional linear approach based on assumptions and prior analysis of potential users. However, the creation of adaptive solutions that respond to the actual needs and behaviors of occupants is essential for complex and dynamic interior environments, especially in terms of public interiors. While other design disciplines such as product and UX design have embraced circular design through design thinking principles with iterative feedback, interior design remains grounded in linear processes due to the long-lasting nature of interiors, a lack of data-driven approaches, and traditional paradigms. This results in a slower adaptation to user-responsive practices observed in other disciplines. To address this gap, this paper proposes a methodology that employs behavioral data as a tool for a circular interior design process, integrating evidence-based design (EBD) principles and feedback loops. The study presents a data-driven approach to the analysis of spatial behavior and employs a mixed-methods strategy in combination with Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) for the tracking of movement patterns and questionnaires for capturing sensory and perceptual evaluations. The discussion illustrates the potential of behavioral data to facilitate a continuous design process, with a particular focus on the interplay between the user, the interior space, and the designer. It provides insights into how the proposed methodology can be utilized by designers and evaluates possible pros and cons of applying this methodology. By focusing on data as a dynamic and experiential element, the research expands the discourse on "making with data" and underscores its transformative role in shaping responsive and sustainable interior environments, promoting long-term spatial adaptability. The findings serve as a call for greater integration of evidence-based approaches in interior design practices.

Background: Currently, applications of robotized systems in orthopedic trauma surgery steadily increase due to their functional abilities facilitating surgeon skills. The aim of this study is to present the functional advantages of a recently developed robot for bone drilling.Methods: Ex-vivo experiments were performed on fresh porcine and bovine bones, as well as on fresh and embalmed human bones such as femora, vertebrae and rips, by the use of the robot for bone drilling to identify diverse control parameters and analyse thrust force and drill bit temperature during drilling.Results: Experimental data during drilling is shown, control algorithms are described and bone drilling modes are characterized. Maximal values of thrust force and temperature are detected. Controlling thrust force seems to be the proper way to reduce force resistance and hence temperature during drilling. Far cortex detection during the bone-drilling process is a specific task in orthopaedic surgery. Any errors in its execution could damage the cortex wall from the inside, which often causes additional trauma even with a fatal result. Here we present some functionality enhancements of the drilling orthopaedic robot ODRO concerning the solution of the far cortex detection problem. The solution is based on software control of the thrust force applied to the bone during the drilling process. A new algorithm is created and its software realisation is provided. Experimental results are presented which verify and confirm the new functional characteristics of the robot. The risk of far cortex damage may be avoided by robot application and such precise operations may guarantee better success.

The interior and exterior design of hospitals plays an important role in improving patient comfort, safety, and service efficiency. This study aims to develop a plan for the parking lot at RSIA Nirmala Kediri through direct observation and literature review. Data was sourced from land observation, two main case studies that presented building functionality evaluations, and the results of space redesign. The findings reveal that limited parking capacity, a single entry-exit access point, insufficient signage for designated lanes, and inadequate supporting facilities pose potential traffic congestion and safety risks. Therefore, it is recommended to develop parking zoning, add entry-exit access points, establish safe vehicle and pedestrian lanes, relocate the canteen to the rear area, and improve the directional signage, lighting, and portal systems. The application of workflowbased design principles and aspects of comfort and safety is expected to improve operational efficiency, accessibility, and user comfort, in line with regulatory standards and healthcare service needs, particularly for mothers and children.

To investigate the time and factors related to the diagnostic interval of oral cancer in Brazilian health services from 2000 to 2022. Cross-sectional and hospital-based study, including 12,989 cases retrieved from the Hospital Cancer Registries of Brazil. Descriptive analyses were performed, and the negative binomial Poisson regression model was applied. Most Brazilians with oral cancer were diagnosed at an advanced stage (70%), referred by the Unified Health System (SUS) (82%), and needed to travel from their municipality of residence to undergo treatment (63%). The median number of days between screening and the start of treatment was 63 days, with a range between 32 and 104 days. The data show that the referral source (P < .001) and the hospital region (P < .001) are important factors influencing the diagnostic interval, with individuals referred by SUS and treated in hospitals in the Midwest region (IRR 1.45) experiencing a longer interval than others. The healthcare interval in Brazil exceeds 60 days, which may impact treatment, prognosis, and quality of life of Brazilians. Funding Source: CNPq.

We report on a diary study of the activities of information workers aimed at characterizing how people interleave multiple tasks amidst interruptions. The week-long study revealed the type and complexity of activities performed, the nature of the interruptions experienced, and the difficulty of shifting among numerous tasks. We present key findings from the diary study and discuss implications of the findings. Finally, we describe promising directions in the design of software tools for task management, motivated by the findings.

As of 2008, for the first time in human history, half of the world's population now live in cities. And with concerns about issues such as climate change, energy supply and environmental health receiving increasing political attention, interest in the sustainable development of our future cities has grown dramatically. Yet despite a wealth of literature on green architecture, evidence-based design and sustainable planning, only a fraction of the current literature successfully integrates the necessary theory and practice from across the full range of relevant disciplines.

Baggrunden for projektet var at få indblik i hvilken betydning besøgsrestriktioner, under covid-19 havde for sundhedspersonalet, patienterne og pårørende. Formål: Undersøgelses formål er at belyse betydningen af pårørendes fysiske fravaer hos saerligt sårbare patienter med udgangspunkt i pårørendes, medpatienters og sundhedspersonalets erfaringer. Metode: Undersøgelsen anvender en kvalitativ tilgang og omfatter interviewdata fra patienter, pårørende og sundhedspersonale i en Ortopaedkirurgisk afdeling. Studiet er en sekundaere analyse. Resultater: Analysen gav to hovedtemaer: "Pårørende som en uundvaerlig samarbejdspartner" og "Oplevelsen af de sårbare patienters ensomhed". Temaerne vedrørende fravaer af pårørende berører oplevelsen af tabt viden, en følelse af magtesløshed og et stort behov for at se med egne øjne og at kunne bidrage til de sårbare patienters behandlingsforløb. Konklusion: De sårbare patienter bliver saerlig ramt under besøgsrestriktioner. Pårørende til sårbare patienter har et behov for at vaere tilstede og både de og sundhedspersonalet ser dem som en vigtig ressource i patientforløbet.

To describe former intensive care patients’ experiences of the consultation, specifically regarding content and setting. 2. To explore the benefits of the consultation in regard to the individual patients’ symptoms of Post Intensive Care Syndrome.

Limiting common indoor spaces has been a critical measure in reducing COVID-19 transmission and protecting public health. The extent and effectiveness of change are unknown, particularly as far as future design is concerned. This study objectives to focus on emerging research questions at the boundary of COVID-19 and plan type. First, this study goals to examine the factors that have the features of reducing COVID-19 when using common indoor spaces. Second, explore the relationship between apartment layout types and which one is the best for use post-COVID-19 by the apartment's inhabitants. Based on space syntax (software design) analysis and three primary syntactical indicators: integration, connectivity, and visibility. The research method in this study chose five different floor plan types of multi-story apartment buildings in Erbil city. The analyses presented a clear preference for the singleloaded corridor (gallery) type plan over other types for reducing COVID-19.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, people spent on average around 90% of their time indoors. Nowadays, more than ever, with work-from-home commands in place, it is important that they rethink the design and procedure of buildings. Indoor common space parameters straight affect the comfort and well-being of occupants. After COVID-19 cooperates, occupants are at increased danger for many infections make worse by social distancing. The aim of this study, to assess how to provide social distancing by evaluating the functionality of the plan type on the common indoor spaces in the multi-story apartment buildings in Erbil City. The methodology in this study integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches to increase the accuracy of the research results. This study chose ten different floor plan types of multistory apartment buildings established on space syntax (software design) analysis, and one primary syntactical indicator is visual connectivity. This research study responds to two questions that discover the effects of functionality in indoor common spaces to provide social distancing of residents. The results determined that the layout design of the apartment space influences the social distancing of areas. Therefore, the results preferred the single-loaded corridor (gallery) plan over other types to provide social distancing post-COVID-19. The research establishes a foundation for future design and offers visions for new study instructions besides findings.

Front-line staff offer first-hand perspectives to identify fall risk factors related to the built environment. Through qualitative methodology, nurses’ perceptions highlight medical-surgical unit design features that contribute to patient falls or help reduce the impact or likelihood of a fall.

In this paper, an exchange of letters between the philosopher Jacques Derrida and architect Peter Eisenman is used as a catalyst to discuss the material qualities of glass and its relationship with the concept of transparency in architecture. In his criticism of an architecture devoid of human qualities, Derrida uses glass, defined through Walter Benjamin's writings, as a hard and cold material that does not allow any human attachments and transparency as an absence of aura or a sense of awe. This paper attempts to elaborate that there can be different interpretations of transparency in architecture and that the material qualities of glass can be used to construct a different understanding of architecture in the current world of mass media and information. It is also argued that a particular approach to architecture has become possible in which textual constructs veil glassy buildings resulting in a translucent architecture that exploits different media to extend its influence beyond the limitations of a particular material, site or context.

Evidence-based design and planning (EBDP) is a methodology that integrates empirical evidence into the decision-making processes of design and planning. EBDP intentionally relies on the most trustworthy research findings to guide design choices, with the aim of optimising results within the realm of the built environment. Spatial models, tools, and methods have been developed to create evidence for Social-Economic Performance Assessment in urban environments. The models have proven to be effective in producing reliable results in data-rich environments. However, challenges appear in contexts such as Cyprus, where data availability and quality are limited, this is also the case for areas with limited institutional capacity. Employing techniques such as Data Audits, Stakeholder Meetings, and Urban Models based on Space Syntax, the study explores challenges linked to data accessibility and retrieval, as well as potential institutional setbacks in data-scarce urban environments. This analytical essay is aimed at developing a conceptual framework to assess how people experience the built environment both objectively and subjectively through a critical literature review of neuroarchitecture, architectural phenomenology, and neurophenomenology. Whereas both modes of human experience with the built environment are inseparable in real life, they have often been evaluated as seemingly antithetical and distinct approaches. Our experiences with the environment are mediated by our brains, for instance, our brain’s neurophysiological responses to colors, shapes, or heights. Such experiences are universal. Also, our experiences are constantly refracted by our unconscious subjective and intersubjective sense-making filters in the brain. Based on the critical literature review and synthesis, this study conceptualizes a refractive neuroarchitecture phenomenology, which is defined as a study of humans’ subjective and intersubjective architectural experiences through an epistemological and methodological convergence of the first- and second-person phenomenological and third-person neuroscientific methods. This conceptualization would provide intellectual significance as it attempts to integrate both objective and subjective epistemology and methodology into architectural research. For a practical implication, it is expected to demonstrate the importance of the phenomenological aspect of architectural efficacy and ways of applying neuroscientific research for place-making, including urban renewal and historic preservation.

In recent years, considerable population of children in Iran led to the emphasis of education and educational spaces of children. Unfortunately, most of the schools and kindergartens are established in the spaces without good space or in the spaces with non-educational use (e.g. house). The present study evaluated and presented the quantitative and qualitative model of architecture in education and treatment of hyper active children. To achieve the goals, the qualitative method with multi-approach nature was used. The measures were images and maps and drawing software. The evolution of complex biological systems, such as the human eye, represents a profound challenge to traditional Darwinian models based on random mutations and natural selection. This study employs probabilistic analysis to evaluate the plausibility of evolving a fully functional eye from a light-sensitive cell through a sequence of mutations. By modeling the evolutionary process numerically, the study estimates the number of required mutations (106to 107) and generations necessary for such a transformation. The findings demonstrates that the probability of achieving the observed complexity remains astronomically low, even under favorable assumptions. This improbability persists despite potential inaccuracies in key assumptions, underscoring the robustness of the conclusion. When compared to fundamental constraints, such as the estimated number of atoms in the observable universe 1080, the scale of improbability becomes even more apparent. These results suggest that conventional Darwinian mechanisms may require supplementation or reevaluation to adequately explain the emergence of such intricate biological structures.

Patient safety is a feature of health care systems designed to minimize adverse events that can have a major impact on the patient and even healthcare providers. This is done by designing a high quality healthcare facility and focusing on health care practitioners' practices. The project aims to discuss the factors that guarantee the patient's safety as well as the theoretical foundations of the design of the hospitals. We have explained the factors affecting the patient's safety in the case of faces in the hospital.
The practical aspect is a questionnaire consisting of two questionnaires based on the discussions presented in the project. This questionnaire was presented to medical and engineering cadres in three hospitals. It is a two-model medical model presented to a group of doctors and an engineering model presented to Engineering Staff.

Despite a wealth of studies in healthcare buildings, EBD has so far considered hospital layouts and their effects only marginally. Therefore, this study contributes to the EBD of hospitals by studying configurational issues. It focuses on how a building layout can affect communication between people that is crucial for good healthcare provision. Two types of interface created between users in outpatient clinics are analysed: caregiverspatients and caregivers-caregivers by comparing spatial layouts across two very differently organised hospitals. The two settings are compared using 'Space Syntax' as a methodology; this is brought together with findings from a staff survey identifying communication networks and direct observations on everyday activities of caregivers. Results suggest that by providing shared facilities and bringing caregivers together, communication is more frequent. Creating a clear spatial separation of staff and patient areas facilitates good communication, both among caregivers and between caregivers and patients. However, space is not the only factor affecting communication, since other aspects such as workflow or culture also have an effect on interaction patterns between users. In summary, configurational issues matter and should be studied further by researchers in the field. The paper adds to the existing body of evidence in the field of healthcare and thus enhances the current understanding and knowledge of practitioners on the influence of the built environment on people. Implications for architects and designers in healthcare are discussed briefly.

Energy simulation software has been available for several years, increasingly affordable and accessible by both architecture offices and the academy. The most prominent barrier to truly synthesizing and reconciling architectural design studio education methods with energy consumption literacy and calculation has been the complexity of software and often associated technical knowledge requirements. While the singularly gifted student may be able to navigate complex modeling software and complete architectural design studies concurrently, we observe that it is more often the case that modeling typically drives students toward two divergent outcomes. On the one hand, students find the modeling so compelling that their architectural design outcomes fail to be particularly culturally compelling or beautiful but are simulated to perform well. On the other hand, students become frustrated with the modeling parameters and limitations and ignore the modeling system in favor of design expression. Some pedagogical breakthroughs have been realized in our experience by using schematic design level energy simulation software in architecture design education. This paper develops a compelling thesis for architecture design education pedagogy that fuses the competing design agenda of expression and simulated energy consumption modeling, supported by examples of student work.

According to recently published data from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), less than 40% of energy reductions in new buildings have been realized during the first four years of reporting by the offices participating in the AIA 2030 Commitment, which is well below the targets of 60% reduction between 2010 and 2015, 70% reduction between 2015 and 2020, etc. Combine this data with the fact that the reporting firms represent less than 1% of the architecture firms in the US, that they are among the most aggressive adopters of the commitment, and that the adopting offices operate in a variety of climatic regions of the US, and it is clear that progress toward the commitment is quite modest. Energy use reduction strategies for this complicated climate, from hot and humid summers to cold and dry winters, as well as increasing frequency of extreme weather events prompting evolving resiliency considerations, requires sober assessment of the conditions necessary to truly realize the goals of reduced energy consumption and carbon neutral design by 2030. Design professionals have successfully realized substantial energy use reductions by incorporating innovative design approaches, including a variety of passive solar and natural ventilation applications, in addition to incrementally improving mechanical and on-site renewable solutions. Yet applications of innovative passive approaches in the continental climatic regions are fraught with difficulty. This paper continues a discourse on architectural planning and design strategies for substantially lowering energy use with a focus on buildings located in the continental climatic regions.
