In this paper, we intend to undertake a more detailed examination of data on prices and wages in mediaeval Serbia during the 14th and 15th centuries. The known prices in the territory of the Serbian state will be compared with those documented in Dubrovnik (Ragusa) and Kotor. Due to the absence of sources, the incomes of the Serbian nobility can be partially and indirectly ascertained, taking into account the earliest surviving Ottoman defters compiled after the fall of the Despotate. For the period preceding Ottoman rule, even less is known about the wages of other strata of society, which is why we must rely on information pertaining to the area of the Ragusan Commune. We shall endeavour to identify what kinds of goods and properties the nobility and other inhabitants could afford. Based on this, we will be able to roughly gauge their standard of living. Finally, all this may enable us to perceive broader economic and social trends.

Rad se bavi ideološko-političkim orijentacijama prekarijata u tri države koje zauzimaju različite pozicije unutar svetskog kapitalističkog sistema – Srbija, Hrvatska i Nemačka. Analiza počiva na podacima prikupljenim u okviru devete runde Evropskog društvenog istraživanja (European Social Survey) iz 2018. godine. Pripadnici prekarijata se u sve tri države u velikoj meri identifikuju sa političkim akterima koji koriste socijalnu demagogiju u svom diskursu, pri čemu se ne dovode u pitanje temeljne pretpostavke na kojima neoliberalni oblik kapitalističke regulacije društvenih odnosa počiva. Uočene su razlike u političkoj participaciji, percepciji političke efikasnosti i stepenu ideološke identifikacije između zemalja. Dok u Srbiji i Hrvatskoj vlada niska zainteresovanost za politiku i nepoverenje u politički sistem, u Nemačkoj je zabeležen viši nivo političke kompetencije i participacije. U Srbiji se prekarijat identifikuje sa desničarskim ili strankama desnog centra. Hrvatski prekarijat se najviše identifikuje sa politikama koje zagovaraju desno orijentisane političke opcije koje koriste socijalnu demagogiju i zagovaraju zaštitu „domaćeg kapitalizma”. U Nemačkoj se prekarijat opredeljuje za stranke centra koje retorički naginju ulevo, ali promovišu (neo)liberalne ekonomske politike. Sa radikalno-desničarskom Alternativom za Nemačku češće se identifikuju neprekarni ispitanici, što se može objasniti time da je migrantsko poreklo – koje ova stranka oštro kritikuje – jedan od ključnih prediktora prekarnosti u Nemačkoj. Posebna pažnja posvećena je načinu na koji prekarijat interpretira i reaguje na političku ponudu u kontekstu krizne dinamike neoliberalnog oblika kapitalizma, pri čemu redistributivno-etatističke tendencije poprimaju široku (demagošku) podršku nezavisno od pozicije države unutar globalnog kapitalističkog sistema.

This study examines the image (representations) of life and housing in the former workers' colony of Dornkappel, today the Bratislava district of Trnávka, during the period before the Second World War and the socialist era. The settlement emerged as a workers' colony on the outskirts of Bratislava in the late 1920s and early 1930s, acquiring a reputation as a backward, poor and socially inferior neighbourhood with harsh living conditions. In the second half of the 20th century, the growing locality, now renamed Trnávka, was gradually integrated into the urban fabric. Nevertheless, its image as both a territorial and social periphery within Bratislava persisted. After 1989, the situation changed and Trnávka transformed into a desirable and attractive place to live.

Eine »Waagschalen-Mentalität« attestierte der Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland den Akteuren der Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur. Der Zentralrat und weitere Verbände von Opfern des Nationalsozialismus haben am 21. Januar 2004 ihre Mitarbeit in der Stiftung sächsischer Gedenkstätten aufgekündigt (Jungle World, 7/04). In einer Erklärung warnte die Vertretung der jüdischen Gemeinden in Deutschland vor einer »Analogisierung und Relativierung von NS-Verbrechen gegenüber denen des Stalinismus und der Staatssicherheit der DDR«. Gleichzeitig warnte der Zentralrat der Juden vor einer Übertragung des sächsischen Gedenkstättenkonzepts auf die gesamte Bundesrepublik. Diese Kritik zielt auf einen Antrag der Bundestagsfraktion der CDU/CSU, der sich an das sächsische Gedenkstättenkonzept ausdrücklich anlehnt.

In 1998 Karlskrona became item no. 560 on UNESCO´s list of irreplaceable World Herritage Site. In an international context, the city is of major importance, representing as it does an unrivalled illustration of how a fortified naval town and base from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was planned and established. In the eighteenth century developments in Karlskrona in the fields of shipbuilding, architecture, town planning, military construction and engineering, attracted widespread notice and recognition from the continent. For more than a century the distinctive architecture and specialised installations at the navy yard served as a hub of military technology and industry in the Baltic region. Both the naval base and the dockyard have been in continuous operation from the time they were first established until the present day.

The present article examines the historical (or cultural) memory of August 15 in South Korea. As a memorial day, August 15 incorporates the double meaning of liberation from colonial rule in 1945 and the formal promulgation of the South Korean state in 1948. While existing studies have shed light on how disputes over August 15 unfolded after the emergence of the New Right in the mid-2000s, this article analyzes the commemoration of August 15 since its institutionalization as a memorial day in 1949, and traces the origins of conservative challenges to its inscribed memory. The article dissects how the cultural memory of August 15 gradually evolved from an independence day in the 1950s towards a de facto liberation day since the 1960s. Only on round anniversaries is 1948 commemorated as well. The article traces concentrated conservative dissent with prevailing cultural memory to 1998, and shows how this was closely tied to Cold War triumphalist re-evaluations of Syngman Rhee. New Right contestations evolved out of this, and succeeded in state-led 1948-centered August 15 commemorations in 2008. This success was shortlived, and August 15 has since become sharply polarized in politics. Opinion polls suggest that South Koreans mostly reject the 1948-centric narrative.

In this chapiter we analize the evolution of female participation in the cork industry of Catalonia as well as the gender gap on wages. The massive entry of women into the sector in the first decades of the 20th century was carried out by concentrating them on very specific tasks as choosing the cork and operating machines. This was the case of modern factories of the large industrial centers as Palafrugell and Llagostera. The consideration of these activities as women's work motivated and justified the lower wages receveid by them in relation to men workers. The factories located in Palafrugell and Palamós, which had better resists the crisis sector in the 1910s and 1920s, paid higher salaries than those located in other localities more affected by those crisis, although maintaining the gender wage gap.

RESUMEN El presente artículo analiza la actitud que el PCE adoptó hacia el proceso revolucionario portugués entre la primavera de 1974 y el otoño de 1975. Dicha actitud estuvo inextricablemente vinculada a la voluntad del partido de proyectar una imagen de sí mismo que sirviese para su legitimación democrática en vista del cambio posfranquista que se acercaba en España. En esta óptica, el PCE, al mismo tiempo que subrayó constantemente la necesidad de que el nuevo régimen que se estaba construyendo en Portugal se basara en el pleno respeto de las libertades pluralistas y de la dinámica electoral, criticó ásperamente la línea promovida por su homólogo luso, el PCP, que rechazaba la perspectiva de una democratización de corte occidental y manifestaba tendencias autoritarias. En óptica comparada, el artículo analiza también las posturas hacia la revolución portuguesa mantenidas por otros partidos comunistas de Europa Oriental y Occidental, y presta atención a los crecientes desencuentros que, a mediados de la década de 1970, se iban produciendo entre el PCE y buena parte del movimiento comunista internacional.

This paper examines the role of Czechoslovak Intelligence Officer Alois Frank (1897–1974) in the neutral Netherlands during the period of 1939–1940. Frank was a member of the Czechoslovak Intelligence Service, specifically the group led by Colonel František Moravec. In the Netherlands, Frank collaborated with agents and confidants who had previously worked with Czechoslovak intelligence from 1936 to 1939 at the Advanced Intelligence Centre “Libuše”. Additionally, he established new collaborations with Czechoslovak compatriots Karel Jelínek (1891–1943) and Eliška Hájková (1891–1943), both of whom were later executed by the Nazis. The research draws primarily on Czech, Dutch, and German sources housed in the Security Services Archive (Prague), the Military Central Archive – Military Historical Archive in Prague, the National Archives (Den Haag, London-Kew, Prague), and the Federal Archives (Berlin, Bern).

The short-lived period of Eurocommunism in the 1970s and early 1980s was a time of hope and renewed encounters between the Communist parties of Eastern Europe and the Social Democratic and Socialist parties of Western Europe. The Eurocommunist movement was led by the great Communist parties in Italy, the PCI (Partito Comunista Italiano), in France, the PCF (Partie communiste français), and Spain, the PCE (Partido Comunista de España). Some of the smaller Communist parties followed their example. Their leader tried to develop new strategies for their parties suited for their political environment, the Western European democracies and their developed welfare states. Strategies summed up under the name of a »historical compromise« between the Communists and their Conservative and Social Democratic counterparts. It was a joint effort to break free from the tutelage of the Soviet Union and the Communist parties in Russia and Eastern Europe. For the first time in ages, Communist politicians and communist intellectuals engaged in public debates with politicians and intellectuals from the Social Democratic and Socialist Left in Europe. A magyar közigazgatás és Nagy-Románia működése 1 1943 nyarán a dél-bánsági kisváros, Karánsebes főjegyzője, Teodor Dragomir már biztosan a nyugdíjas éveire készült. Tekintettel a háború fejleményeire, vagy akár a belső viszonyokra, esetleg előrehaladott korára, egyáltalán nem lehetetlen, hogy Dragomir inkább várta ezt a pillanatot, és várakozással gondolt elkövetkező nyugodtabb éveire. Ebben biztosak persze nem lehetünk, bár az valószínű, hogy a főjegyző nem volt különösebben boldogtalan, amikor a nyugdíj lehetőségét mérlegelte. Elvégre egy tisztes, közel négy évtizedes karriert zárt le a visszavonulás. Még a dualizmus idején kezdte, és aztán megszakítás nélkül folytatta, akármilyen politikai és rendszerváltás következett. Ráadásul nagyon korán, már 1907-ben főjegyző volt, és innen nem is távozott nyugdíjazásáig.

Problematyka żydowska zawsze zajmowała szczególne miejsce w polskiej historiografii, co wynikało z wielowiekowej obecności Żydów w Polsce. Nie można opisać dziejów Polski, nie pisząc o polskich Żydach, i tym bardziej nie można podejmować charakterystyki Dolnego Śląska, nie określając wkładu, jaki Żydzi wnieśli w jego rozwój po II wojnie światowej. Właśnie ta ludność w znacznie większym stopniu niż w innych regionach Polski wpłynęła na rozwój życia społecznego, gospodarczego, kulturalnego i po części także politycznego tych ziem.

Debbo chiarire preliminarmente che il titolo del mio intervento, quale compare nella locandina del nostro convegno, non si riferisce all'argomento di uno studio che io abbia in corso, e nemmeno a un progetto di ricerca già definito, bensì a quella che, allo stato, altro non è se non un'ipotesi di lavoro, che vorrei approfittare dell'opportunità offertami dall'amichevole invito degli organizzatori per sottoporre all'attenzione dei colleghi partecipanti all'incontro di oggi così da registrarne eventuali reazioni e commenti. L'ipotesi cui alludo è che una rivisitazione mirata, condotta cioè in chiave di confronto e di esplorazione delle possibili connessioni, dirette o indirette, con l'intervento straordinario nel Mezzogiorno, delle politiche di «sviluppo coloniale» che danno convenzionalmente il nome a un periodo ben preciso della tarda storia del colonialismo britannico, collocabile all'incirca tra la vigilia della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e gli inizi della Decolonizzazione, possa contribuire a una migliore conoscenza e comprensione dei precedenti e dei contesti storici globali, se non dei modelli di riferimento effettivi, del caso italiano. Throughout the period of nearly two decades nicknamed the 'long sixties', youth practices and speeches obtained their own autonomy and frequently reached the top of radical criticism regarding the socio-economic, cultural and political models that were in place. Mainly spreading from universities, these dynamics articulated themselves at certain times quite significantly with specificities according to each country's own reality. This article intends to testify to the main characteristics of the student protests that took place in Portugal in the final years of the Estado Novo (New State, 1932-74) and also to note the distances and approaches between these student movements and those that were developing during that time in the democratic western countries.

The 10th US Mountain Division was a special experiment in the military history of the United States. Not only was it the first major U.S. Army formation to specialize in alpine warfare, but during World War II it was also home to a large number of Austrians who had fled the Nazi regime – including ski stars from Tyrol, former aristocrats and Jewish sports teachers from Vienna.

But how many were there exactly? What were the wartime biographies of these mostly unusual soldiers? And in which historical, cultural and social context was this period in their lives embedded?

El artículo aborda el terreno casi inexplorado de las relaciones entre las fiestas patronales, secularización y turismo. Para analizar dichas cuestiones, me centraré en las fiestas patronales del Pilar en Zaragoza así como las peregrinaciones regionales anuales que durante el primer tercio del siglo XX se realizaron a su basílica en conmemoración de la coronación de la imagen del Pilar en 1905. La modernización de ambos festejos produjo un efecto paradójico. La insistencia tanto de una parte del catolicismo local como del Ayuntamiento en modernizar ambos festejos conllevó a la larga una progresiva desvinculación de la celebración misma del marco propiamente religioso-devocional. Sin embargo, a su vez, esta renovación ilustró los límites de un proceso secularizador que fue incapaz de romper una identidad local/regional de matriz religiosa.

Durante años, entre los historiadores españoles pareció que las fuerzas contrarias al cambio que supuso la Revolución estuvieron condenadas a ser definidas a partir de aquello a lo que se oponían. Since its formation in 1985, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) had played a significant role in the political landscape of South Africa. From the start, COSATU appeared to be in support of the then banned African National Congress (ANC) when it adopted the Freedom Charter. This article highlights the relationship which exists between COSATU and the ANC as part of the Tripartite Alliance. The persistent animosity between the members of these two organisations is discussed.

Il volume raccoglie gli atti del convegno Condanne a morte, fucilazioni, decimazioni sommarie nella Grande Guerra: una questione ancora aperta (Pistoia il 24 novembre 2022), organizzato dall’ANPI Comitato Provinciale di Pistoia e dall’Istituto storico della Resistenza e dell’Età contemporanea in provincia di Pistoia, su invito del Comitato unitario per la difesa delle istituzioni repubblicane del Comune di Pistoia (CUDIR), allo scopo di avviare una discussione attorno alla possibilità di installare in città un memoriale in ricordo dei soldati italiani fucilati durante il primo conflitto mondiale. Gli autori dei tre densi saggi che compongono il libro – Irene Guerrini, Marco Pluviano e Valerio Strinati – esplorano varie questioni: il funzionamento della disciplina e della giustizia nel Regio esercito, in chiave comparativa con le altre forze combattenti; il contesto in cui operavano le corti militari italiane, specie quelle straordinarie, e le frequenti circostanze in cui si ricorse alla giustizia sommaria; il tortuoso e tutt’altro che concluso processo legislativo italiano volto a riabilitare i fucilati o, quantomeno, a ristabilirne la memoria, e l’iter che ha portato la Regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia ad approvare una legge in materia.

Arqueología en campos de batalla de Iberoamérica, un nuevo libro que hace eco.
Titulado "Ecos de hierro y plomo. Arqueología en campos de batalla de Iberoamérica, siglos XIX y XX" constituye la tercera entrega de un proyecto colectivo que, desde hace más de una década, ha venido consolidando el campo de la arqueología del conflicto en el ámbito iberoamericano. Editado por Carlos G. Landa, Odlanyer Hernández de Lara y Gorka Martín, el volumen reúne catorce capítulos que, con enfoques diversos, exploran escenarios bélicos entre principios del siglo XIX y la década de 1980, atravesando un arco temporal y geográfico que conecta la península ibérica con América Latina.
El libro ofrece un recorrido que inicia con batallas de la independencia en México y se prolonga hasta la Guerra de Malvinas, incluyendo episodios clave como la Guerra de Intervención en México, las guerras carlistas en España, la Guerra de la Triple Alianza en Paraguay, la Guerra del Pacífico, la Guerra de los Mil Días en Colombia, la invasión de Playa Girón en Cuba y la Guerra Civil Española. Cada estudio combina el análisis de fuentes históricas con evidencias materiales —balas, municiones, fortificaciones, naufragios, paisajes alterados—, mostrando la capacidad de la arqueología para iluminar tanto la dinámica de los combates como las memorias sociales que los rodean.
Uno de los principales aportes del volumen radica en la manera en que articula arqueología, historia y memoria. Los autores insisten en que los campos de batalla son espacios particularmente sensibles, donde la materialidad bélica se entrelaza con la construcción de identidades, patrimonios y memorias colectivas. Así, el registro arqueológico no solo sirve para reconstruir estrategias militares, sino también para problematizar los silencios, traumas y disputas simbólicas que persisten hasta el presente.
El prólogo de Randall H. McGuire, pionero en la arqueología del conflicto en Estados Unidos, enmarca el volumen en un horizonte más amplio y destaca su relevancia como aporte en lengua castellana a un campo en expansión. La introducción de los editores, por su parte, sitúa el proyecto en el contexto actual, marcado por guerras vigentes y por debates urgentes sobre patrimonio, violencia y memoria.
En suma, Ecos de hierro y plomo se presenta como una obra fundamental para comprender la arqueología de los conflictos bélicos en Iberoamérica. Su riqueza radica en la pluralidad de enfoques y en la capacidad de situar las guerras del pasado en diálogo con problemáticas contemporáneas. El libro no solo reconstruye batallas, sino que invita a pensar críticamente en los ecos de hierro y plomo que aún resuenan en nuestras sociedades.

El capítulo 2 de “Ecos de hierro y plomo. Arqueología en campos de batalla de Iberoamérica, siglos XIX y XX” nos traslada al contexto europeo y español de las Guerras Napoleónicas (1808–1814). En particular, se centra en Cataluña, un territorio de frontera que sufrió durante seis años un conflicto continuo que dejó una profunda huella en el patrimonio, la arqueología y la memoria colectiva.

Siguiendo el rastro de la batalla de Ordal (1813), el investigador y arqueólogo Pablo Carrasco Gómez reconstruye este combate nocturno de forma integral: conecta con la comunidad local, colabora en la recuperación del registro arqueológico y participa en la protección del paisaje histórico, contribuyendo así a preservar la memoria de una batalla —y de su campo— largo tiempo olvidados.

Ecos de hierro y plomo. Arqueología en campos de batalla de Iberoamérica, siglos XIX y XX reúne catorce estudios que exploran, desde la arqueología del conflicto, los escenarios materiales donde se libraron guerras que marcaron la historia reciente de la región. Desde las batallas de la independencia en México hasta la Guerra de Malvinas, pasando por la Guerra del Pacífico, la Guerra de los Mil Días en Colombia, las guerras carlistas en España o la invasión de Playa Girón, este volumen muestra cómo la materialidad bélica —armas, fortificaciones, restos humanos y paisajes alterados— conserva las huellas de la violencia y permite comprender sus memorias, traumas y silencios.
El libro ofrece un recorrido cronológico que abarca del siglo XIX al XX, articulando casos de estudio de diversos países y contextos. Los capítulos, elaborados por especialistas de América Latina y Europa, ponen de relieve que los campos de batalla no son solo lugares de muerte, sino también espacios de construcción de memorias colectivas, patrimonios disputados y procesos de resiliencia.
Más allá del análisis histórico, la obra propone reflexionar críticamente sobre el presente, mostrando cómo los ecos de hierro y plomo siguen resonando en las sociedades contemporáneas.

This research workshop is organized within the framework of the TRAFICMED research program, which examines the illicit trafficking of drugs, arms, and human beings in the Mediterranean region from the 1870s to the 1960s. In the short term, the aim is to bring together researchers interested in the interactions between traffickers, authorities, and the discourse of prohibition. The broader goal of the project is to offer a global perspective on a phenomenon that is itself global, yet has often been studied through national methodological lenses. As a rapidly growing field in the humanities, the study of illicit trafficking benefits from the contributions of scholars from diverse academic backgrounds.
The primary objective of the workshop is to identify and compare cultural, political, administrative, scientific, and police sources produced by a wide range of individual, institutional, and associative actors. Illicit movements within the Mediterranean have historically been subject to various forms of control and representation at local, regional, national, and international levels. These dynamics are further complicated by shifts in political regimes and major political upheavals, particularly during the 20th century, a period marked by imperial reconstruction, which significantly influenced both the perception and regulation of legal and illegal movements.

Resumen En los últimos años, la historiografía ha superado la visión del anarquismo español como un movimiento anacrónico en los nuevos tiempos, con las consecuentes suposiciones e implicaciones políticas. Hoy, por las investigaciones basadas en datos y hechos concretos, sabemos que el anarquismo español era, para bien o para mal, un movimiento principalmente moderno, urbano y mayoritario en buena parte de los focos industriales. En la presente ponencia vamos a mostrar el ejemplo de Granada en todo lo dicho, donde el anarquismo, mayoritario en la ciudad, fue un elemento modernizado y modernizador, que interpretó, aplicó y, finalmente, aportó, en la sociedad de su tiempo, principalmente en seis campos que hemos dividido: 1) Escolarización; 2) Laicización; 3) Cultura; 4) Asociacionismo; 5) Urbanidad; 6) Sindicalismo.

El texto aborda el proceso de conversión del general Francisco Franco en un dictador soberano y constituyente en el contexto de la guerra civil española de 1936-1939. Analiza las características de su condición de "Caudillo" con poderes casi absolutos y las formas evolutivas del régimen construido sobre tres pilares institucionales: el Ejército que ganó la guerra y garantizó la victoria, la Iglesia católica que aportó su sanción doctrinal religiosa y la Falange como partido único del Estado. También aborda el debate sobre la naturaleza del franquismo y su larga evolución temporal en contextos internacionales muy diferentes y contrastados.
