A smart gentrification theory
2022, Looking for Editor
Abstract
The present text on political ecology examines the relationship between gentrification and environmental urban planning. Approaching gentrification as an issue of capitalist reproduction, rather than capitalist production, as suggested by the rent gap theory, I analyze how the state urban policies lead on purpose to a class-oriented population relocation toward the city center, as it results in better employment of energy resources and cheaper city reproduction. This unorthodox pathway requires examining the significance of the reproduction process within the neoliberal context and eventually evaluating the outcomes not solely in terms of social inequality, but also with regards to the historical impoverishment of the entire labor force.
