The transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric transportation marks a significant step forward in both energy consumption and mobility sustainability. A key development supporting this shift is the integration of electric vehicles with power infrastructure in a way that allows energy to flow in both directions. Vehicles can store surplus electricity and return it to the grid when needed. This approach transforms electric vehicles into mobile energy resources, enhancing grid flexibility and improving supply-demand balance, particularly during peak load periods. This review outlines the operational foundations of this technology, with emphasis on energy management systems and bidirectional power converters that enable efficient control. It also addresses the strategic planning of charging infrastructure to ensure both accessibility and effective energy distribution. Furthermore, the paper highlights how recent innovations in artificial intelligence and smart technologies support real-time monitoring and adaptive control, ultimately improving system responsiveness and performance. This work contributes to the ongoing effort toward developing intelligent, sustainable energy systems.

The existing literature of emerging markets fails to provide evidence to clarify if people choose their residential location based on commuting to work or other socioeconomic or household factors. The present paper seeks to provide such evidence in South Asia using the case study of a small city in Pakistan. This exploratory study was facilitated by primary data collected from 365 adults in Hafizabad, Pakistan, using face-to-face interviews in 2018. Two research questions were answered: (1) with what socioeconomic or mobility-related variables are the residential self-selections correlated? (2) how strong is the possible association of commuting to work to residential location choices compared to other factors, including social, economic, and family-related issues? Izbira stanovanjske lokacije v državah v razvoju in njena povezava z mestnim prevozom sta slabo raziskani in ne povsem dobro razumljeni, vrzel v poznavanju razmer pa je še večja v primeru malih mest v teh državah. Avtorji v članku proučujejo pakistansko mesto Hafizabad, pri čemer je njihov cilj zagotoviti podatke za prihodnje kvantitativne analize, ki bodo zajele izbire stanovanjskih lokacij v malih mestih na indijski podcelini. Avtorji so anketirali 365 prebivalcev štirih sosesk v mestu, v katerih živi skupno 19.042 ljudi. Anketi se je odzvalo 1,92 % posameznikov in 12,65 % gospodinjstev, pri čemer je bila stopnja zaupanja pri odgovorih prvih ±5,08 %, pri drugih pa ±4,79 %. The circumstances of the relations of jobs-housing balance and urban travel behavior are not clear in emerging and developing countries. There are limited reliable data suitable for testing the hypotheses regarding the associations of the neighborhood-level number of employment opportunities in these countries. This manuscript summarizes the results of an explorative survey undertaken in Lahore, Pakistan to support empirical analyses testing these hypotheses. The survey was undertaken in spring 2018 in six neighborhoods of Lahore and collected the data of 417 respondents. The short questionnaire applied in the survey facilitated generation of 15 individual and household, socioeconomic, and mobility-related variables of different types. As infrastructures of movement often prioritize technical efficiency, they risk neglecting the qualitative and experiential dimensions of space, an oversight that architectural thinking is distinctively positioned to address. Architecture offers a special perspective to address this gap, particularly in light of SDG 09-Industry, Innovation and Infrastructures and SDG 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities, and in reference to the principles of the EAAE Charter.
By engaging with mobility through a transversal approach, the conference explores how architectural design can contribute to reimagining spaces to overcome functionalist engineering limitations, also considering the ecological, climate and social impacts of mobility spaces as something more than mere built objects.
Through the examination of design methodologies and prototype case studies, the conference attempts to unveil the potential of architectural design and research tools to enrich unconventional discussions about mobility in urban and peri-urban contexts, its spatial configurations and experiential qualities. Although mobility is intended as a framework, the discourse will focus on the spaces above, below, in-between, and to the sides of the ordinary boundaries of architectures of flow, as well as on the spaces of new forms of movement. The conference «Passages. Architecture for Flowing and Connecting Spaces» invited contributions which critically address the role of Architecture in the Shaping the spaces of mobility, and in their interference, around the sessions of “Intersection”, “Collateral” and “Evolution”.

Background: The integration of sustainable mobility within rehabilitation combines environmental and health-focused strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare and improve the results of the patients. This approach shows the need for environmentally friendly transport options such as walking, cycling, public transport, and carpooling within various rehabilitation programs.
Aim(s) (including purpose setting): This study aimed to explore the influence of demographic factors such as age, gender, and mobility restrictions on the willingness of patients to adopt sustainable mobility options during rehabilitation treatment.
Material and methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used, with 85 participants receiving rehabilitation. Data were collected with a structured electronic questionnaire consisting of demographic data and attitudes toward different sustainable transport methods. Statistical analyses included Chi-Square tests, analysis of variance with post-hoc Tukey, independent samples t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, and two-way analysis of variance to assess the main and interaction effects. Result: Younger participants within 18-30 years and female participants showed a higher willingness to use public transport compared to older age groups and male participants (analysis of variance p = 0.008, η² = 0.13; t-test p < 0.01, d = 0.72). No significant interaction between age and gender was found, suggesting additive effects.
Conclusions: Demographic factors can affect sustainable mobility preferences in rehabilitation, necessitating individualized interventions to improve the adoption. Programs should consider age, gender, and mobility limitations to promote sustainable transport. Defining these factors can improve rehabilitation outcomes and support environmental sustainability goals. Future research should investigate long-term impacts and the role of additional variables such as socioeconomic status and infrastructure.

Technological innovation can play a major role in developing a sustainable mobility system. To generate a stateof-the-art of sustainable mobility innovations, and understand its future trajectory we use the systemic perspective of the sustainable mobility paradigm Avoid-Shift-Improve to present a patent landscape of the entire land-transportation system. The descriptive part of our study covers 425,885 granted patent families between 1970 and 2016 across 75 patent jurisdictions. In the predictive part, we use this dataset to forecast sustainable mobility innovations till 2030. We identify the USA, and China are the leading knowledge importers in sustainable mobility innovations, whereas Japan and Germany are the leading knowledge exporters. Overall, our analysis suggests that there is a visible shift in sustainable mobility innovation towards a low emission mobility future that is more connected and electric than before. However, the combined effects of continued growth in innovation for efficiency gain in GHG emitting mobility technologies, a high level of uncertainty in future innovation trajectory in vehicle charging and hydrogen technology, and a low level of innovation activities in mass and non-motorized transportation technologies can imperil a faster transition to a zero-emission future of mobility.

Greek cities exhibit unique characteristics that can serve as catalysts for implementing the polycentric city model as a means to enhance urban sustainability. This paper explores how Greece’s urban structure, historical development, and land-use patterns create both challenges and opportunities in adopting this model. While Greek cities inherently possess mixed-use neighbourhoods, which align with the core principles of polycentricity, persistent urban issues such as inefficient mobility networks, fragmented governance, and limited public participation hinder progress.
The study examines global case studies, particularly the 15-minute city model implemented in Paris and assesses its applicability within the Greek context. Key factors, including mobility strategies, land-use policies, and citizen engagement, are analysed to determine their feasibility in Greek cities.
Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of fostering local adaptation rather than direct replication of international models.
Findings indicate that while Greece has a comparative advantage in certain aspects of polycentric urbanism, targeted interventions are required to address existing urban shortcomings. These include strengthening sustainable mobility infrastructures, preserving the diversity of urban functions, and fostering public participation in planning processes. Ultimately, the study advocates for a strategic, context-specific approach to integrating polycentric principles into Greek urban environments, ensuring resilience, sustainability, and improved quality of life for residents.

Meeting the European Green Deal's goal of climate neutrality by 2050 calls for a 90 percent decrease in emissions from the transportation sector. Thus, there is need to accelerate the shift to more sustainable mobility for integrated and smarter multimodal and intermodal mobility. In European countries, more than 70% of the inhabitants live in metropolitan areas. Achieving low-carbon and more sustainable mobility is important to ensuring sustainable urban infrastructure. However, current mobility planning frameworks do not consider the key factors and strategies that encourage residents to choose sustainable transport modes. Hence, there is a need to identify the most efficient actions that should be employed either in the short or long term to achieve accessible, safe, cost-effective, and green transport systems specifically through the development of sustainable public transportation. Moreover, a paradigm shift is needed to explore the synergy between transportation and its relationship to the city. Accordingly, this article presents an action plan as an approach to assess key strategies needed to foster sustainable and smart mobility planning and design by deploying effective strategies and design solutions that support different green means of transportation for smart urban development. Qualitative data on sustainable mobility planning and design strategies was collected via secondary sources from the literature, and descriptive data analysis was carried out. Findings from this study identify internal and external factors required to promote sustainable multimodal and intermodal mobility based on the city's transport policies and actions. Implications from this study provide a use case for the technological requirements required for electric mobility planning, design, and system operation for the actualization of sustainable public transportation to improve smart urban development.

We propose a novel method to estimate capability to make bicycle journeys, specifically considering the individual physical capability (IPC) of entire populations of individuals from all population segments of an area, not just current cyclists. IPC considers the physical constraints on the maximum distance people could cycle given the typical topography of where they live (Distance IPC), and then estimates their ability to make a particular journey (Journey IPC). IPC, when estimated in this way for a particular point in time, may be informed by antecedent behavioral choices and capabilities, and may be a constraint or enabler of subsequent capabilities, potential adaptations and behavior. The focus of the present paper is on explaining a generic method of estimating Distance IPC and Journey IPC by constructing an individually based spatially fine-grained model. We show how such an individual-level model may be implemented for a population resident in many small spatial zones by use of spatial micro-simulation (population synthesis), to generate the individual attributes required as inputs to the model. We present a case-study for the city of Leeds, UK. We explain the range of data sources used, explore sensitivity of the results to assumptions of the model, and illustrate the ability of the model to simulate the effects of policies. Finally, we identify several possible application areas and opportunities to further develop the model.

Mobility justice has emerged as a critical framework for equal access to urban mobility, yet remote-working women remain overlooked in policy and planning. Contrary to the assumption that remote work reduces women's travel demands, this study reveals how those women develop complex mobility patterns to balance household and professional responsibilities, and well-being. Through a thematic analysis of YouTube content (n = 39) and its emerging public discourse (n = 50), and semi-structured interviews (n = 10), five key themes emerge: 1) Balancing Work and Caregiving, 2) Enhancing Mental and Physical Health, 3) Promoting Social Inclusion, 4) Home/work Spaces Zoning, and 5) Moving to Livable Communities. The five themes demonstrate that remote-working women engage in daily trip-chaining, adopt multi-locational work regimes, and prioritize walkable neighborhoods with integrated services. This study proposes the concept of 'Walkable care communities', a feminist urban model, integrating childcare services into third places such as libraries, cafés, and co-working spaces, and maintaining walkable connectivity between residences, co-working spaces, schools, and essential services. This study bridges urban mobility, feminist urban theory, and remote work discourse, adding three new dimensions to the mobility justice concept. The 'care mobility', 'third-place', and 'multi-locality' concepts collectively reframe mobility justice around caring mobility, rather than just commuting.

The determinants of smartphone use for urban transportation purposes in developing countries, particularly in the cities of the Middle East and North Africa, have not been thoroughly investigated so far. This study aims to clarify the individual, mobility, and perception-related correlates of smartphone use specifically for ordering vehicles via ride-sourcing in medium-sized and large cities as well as the megacities of the region. The four cities of Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt and Beirut and Jounieh in Lebanon were taken as casestudy cities. An overall sample of 3,285 face-to-face interviews was undertaken between late 2022 and early 2023 using a questionnaire focusing on individual, household, mobility, and perceptions of the respondents. The research depends on a chi-square test of independence and Binary logistic regression to answer three research questions: Are the levels of smartphone use for transportation purposes significantly different in the countries of Egypt and Lebanon? What are the correlates of smartphone use for transportation purposes in the four casestudy cities? What are the differences among the correlates of smartphone use for transportation purposes in the four case-study cities? The results of a Chisquare test of independence show that there is a highly significant difference between the smartphone use levels for transportation purposes among the four case-study cities: in subsamples in the Egyptian and Lebanese capitals, there is a stronger tendency to use smartphones for transportation. Moreover, the model fit based on Binary Logistic regression shows that age, trip generation for non-commute purposes, perceived ease of using ride-sourcing apps, perceived security when using public transportation, education status, and gender are significantly correlated with smartphone use. These explanatory variables function somehow differently in the case-study cities, but in general, there are strong similarities among the four cities. In conclusion, the results of this study can be used to reduce personal car use and strengthen shared mobility in the cities of the Middle East and North Africa region.

There has been a growing interest in understanding how new urbanism principles impact mobility patterns and behaviours. The New Urbanism, initially conceived as an antisprawl reform movement, New Urbanism is an urban planning and design approach that emphasizes walkability, mixed land uses, and connectivity. In new urbanism, there is a strong emphasis on promoting alternative modes of transportation to reduce car dependency and create more sustainable and liveable communities. These abstract aims to explore the relationship between new urbanism and mobility, focusing on the various factors that influence transportation. This paper aims to explore the key principles of New Urbanism that enhance mobility and examine the ways in which it promotes the use of alternative modes of transportation. Through this research, we hope to provide insights into the potential benefits and challenges of New Urbanism as a means of improving mobility in urban areas. Some common modes of transportation in new urbanist developments include walking, cycling, and public transit by examining the role of street design, infrastructure, and transportation demand management strategies. This not only helps to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution but also promotes a healthier and more active lifestyle. The goal is to encourage alternative transportation options. This research seeks to provide insights into creating more sustainable and accessible urban environments. This research will contribute to the ongoing dialogue on how to design cities that prioritize mobility, promote alternative transportation options, and reduce car dependency.

This article examines the relationship between tourism mobility and land resource management, aiming to develop strategies for sustainable destination development. By exploring the interconnections between tourist mobility patterns and land usage, the study emphasizes the need for integrated approaches to address sustainability challenges. The research is using a mixed-methods approach by incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives from urban planning, landscape design, mobility, and tourism to analyse the environmental, social, and economic impacts of tourism mobility on land resources. The study includes a comprehensive literature review and case studies, revealing significant impacts such as environmental degradation, social disruption, and economic strain. Through case study analysis and empirical evidence, the article identifies key strategies for harmonizing tourism mobility with land resource management, including promoting sustainable transportation, implementing land use planning measures, and fostering stakeholder collaboration. This article is an overview of how travel behavior and urban mobility are shaping and influencing each other. The paper is structured in two parts. The first one presents the factors that influence travel behavior and in the second one, a few examples of good practices and unsuccessful projects are analyzed in order to determine how community collaboration affects the planning and decision-making process. This research examines the growth and obstacles faced by two-wheeler taxi services in Mon Town, Nagaland-an isolated, mountainous area where traditional public transportation is constrained by geography and infrastructure. Utilizing primary survey data gathered from 70 individuals (including 40 drivers and 30 passengers), the research explores income patterns and the operational dynamics of informal mobility systems. Through descriptive statistics and a multiple linear regression analysis, we discover that fuel costs and seasonal factors significantly affect daily earnings, while driving experience has a minimal effect. This research examines the fluctuations in income throughout the different seasons and evaluates the viability of private water suppliers in Kohima Town, Nagaland. Due to the irregular and inadequate public water supply, many households rely on private water suppliers, especially during the dry season. Employing a descriptive and analytical research framework, primary data were gathered through field surveys with 30 suppliers and analyzed using basic statistical tools and Graphical analysis. The findings indicate a considerable rise in income during the dry months and a decrease during the monsoon, demonstrating a strong seasonal dependency. A chi-square analysis confirms a statistically significant relationship between season and income level. Despite these income variations, most suppliers consider their work adequate for their livelihood, although they face challenges such as poor road conditions, elevated fuel expenses, and fluctuating demand. Sinergi antara teknologi, kebijakan spasial, dan keterlibatan masyarakat menjadi kunci untuk menciptakan sistem transportasi yang inklusif, efisien, dan ramah lingkungan.

This article develops a rural-urban classification of the Belgium territory that is used to define the economic profile of rural areas in Belgium, as compared to other territories. Who is the rural entrepreneur, is the central question in this respect. Is this the traditional farmer, or has the rural firm also evolved together with the overall economic transition? The article shows that rural entrepreneurship exists, leading to an economy in rural areas that is far from being ignorable. The rural entrepreneur is engaged in a variety of activities much broader that agriculture resulting in an economic portfolio that mainly consist of activities in other sectors. Finally rural entrepreneurs are dynamic, but the importance of 'ambitious' start-ups remains rather low indicating that many start-ups have to be considered as a type of 'out of necessity entrepreneurship'. In defining societal views on urban-rural relationships and the role of and strategies for rural territories socio-cultural capital plays a crucial role. Therefore developing views and defining roles have to start from the socio-cultural and economic content of these territories. In this respect it should be a mistake to reduce the socio-cultural and economic content to the agrarian activities that are unmistakably important but certainly not the only expression of the rural entrepreneur.

In recent years, the paradigm shift towards sustainable mobility in transportation planning has led to an acceleration in scientific studies aimed at improving the performance of sustainable urban transport modes. The aim is to increase sustainability performance by facilitating the transition between sustainable modes within sustainable mobility systems. The concept of intermodality is key to overcoming the origin and destination transport problem (the first and last mile problem) in public transport. Shared bicycle systems, which support rail public transport, are a tool that can increase the performance of sustainable urban mobility as an intermodal travel model, overcoming the first and last mile problem. Well-planned shared bicycle systems that are well-integrated with rail systems increase the success of rail systems in cities and enhance their sustainability impact. This paper aims to present literature on the integration of shared bicycle stations into rail systems, evaluate the level of integration of urban rail systems with shared bicycle systems in Turkey and provide recommendations for transport policies to increase the sustainability impact of rail systems. Additionally, measuring the spatial accessibility of shared bicycle stations within a pedestrian access distance of rail system stations using the isochron mapping method provides a suggestion that can be used elsewhere in the world to measure the level of intermodality between rail systems and shared bicycle systems.

The tire industry is undergoing a revolutionary transformation with the introduction of soybean oil-based technologies, which promise not only greater durability compared to traditional tires but also a significantly more favorable environmental impact. This article examines in depth the development, technical advantages, environmental benefits, and promising future of tires manufactured with soybean oil, presenting quantitative data and technical analyses based on industry research and practical implementations.

Increasing the share of trips using public transport is a long-term activity that necessitates continuous improvement of the offer. What is crucial here is not only the tangible sphere, measured by objective indicators of punctuality, but also the subjective area of passenger feelings and assessments. The latter is significantly influenced by punctuality, which can be the catalyst for a long-term process of strengthening passenger loyalty and enhancing the public transport experience. The article aims to assess the importance of punctuality against the background of other transport requirements in the opinion of all city residents, with particular emphasis on the views of people using public transport to varying degrees. Research carried out in Gdynia (Poland) showed that punctuality is one of the most important parameters through which residents evaluate the functioning of public transport, regardless of the method of urban travel. Punctuality is of the greatest importance for people who always travel by car and usually by bicycle. M. Wołek, K. Hebel, K. Birr, H. Nozari Punctuality is the second most important transport requirement for people who always and usually travel by public transport, i.e., the most important segment of public transport users. The research results confirm the high significance of punctuality among residents, irrespective of their mode of urban travel. Punctuality, though just one of the many aspects of the quality of transport services, plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall opinion about the transport system.

Understanding the complexities of urban travel behaviors is essential for fostering sustainable mobility systems. This study examines the impact of socioeconomic factors, attitudinal variables, and urban characteristics on travel mode choices for multipurpose trips in Dubai and Lahore. The comparative analysis broadens the body of travel mode choice research by analyzing shared mobility modes' influence in less studied diverse urban contexts. Using multinomial logistic regression on surveys data from 1653 residents of Dubai and 1603 residents of Lahore. The findings reveal that stronger pro-public transport attitudes, frequent commuting, and lower travel costs substantially increase transit use-particularly when travel times remain below 30 min. In contrast, each additional street connectivity, higher driving license ownership, strong pro-car attitudes, and a premium on comfort lower transit adoption. Individuals with longer commutes who value safety prefer shared mobility modes, but higher costs and pro-car attitudes deter them. Active travel accounts for only 14 % (Dubai) and 5 % (Lahore) of all trips, indicating that substantial improvements in local connectivity are required to shift behavior. These findings suggest creating specific policies for each city. In Dubai, improve public transit accessibility and city design. In Lahore, improve safety and reliability of local transit connections and regulate ridesharing modes. This will help create equitable mobility ecosystems in cities.

Mobility has an important impact on the overall functioning of cities and quality of life of citizens. On the other hand, motorized road traffic is associated with high levels of noise and air pollutant emissions along with congestion and other externalities, leading to considerable social and environmental costs and degradation of human health. Following the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is one of the leading risks in Europe, associated with nearly 1 million deaths per year. In Portugal around 69% of the adult population do not reach the minimum recommended level of physical activity and 31% were considered sufficiently and highly active. Therefore, more sustainable transport modes such as walking and cycling are envisaged. This paper is built upon the contracted work with the city of Viana do Castelo, located in the North of Portugal, conducted for the World Health Organization (WHO) by the University of Minho and LNEC. The work integrates a research roadmap (case study plan for the application of the Health Economic Assessment Tool) for the appraisal of health benefits of specific walking and cycling investments in the city. The work presented here focus on the former part of the study which involved joint team work with the city officers for defining the target policy scenarios for using the WHO Economic Assessment Tool, the exchange of experiences and practices with other European cities regarding the use of this tool for health benefits assessment, the characterisation of the mobility patterns at the reference and alternative policy scenarios set for the cost-benefit analysis, the data collection plan and the expected impacts from the early consideration of health benefits of those non-motorized investments. Results from the evaluation study can help the City elected officials to demonstrate the health benefits of walking and cycling investments. Individuals' awareness and perceptions of the health benefits of cycling and walking are important to encourage people to uptake active mobility styles.

Scientific literature has explored the potential of urban planning and design to contain sprawl and its impacts. However, the potential of public spaces to enhance active mobility at the proximity scale remains underexplored in the Global South. Discouraging automobile use compels addressing the nexus between urban morphology and public spaces vitality, extending beyond areas with proximity to public transport. We developed and applied a novel assessing tool to comprehend micro-scale morphological characteristics favoring walking and cycling in two polygons of Monterrey. By using a set of urban design and active mobility indicators, and considering prevalent mainstream practices and their social representations, we evaluate the feasibility to transform such polygons through fine-grained urban design. The SUFi model provides an initial framework within the context of ongoing research. This article presents preliminary findings that inform prospective research trajectories by identifying key limitations and opportunities in the development and application of indicators designed to ensure the study's representativeness and enhance its replicability. Our findings suggest that urban areas developed during the "Mexican miracle" have greater short-term transformative potential compared to those established under a neoliberal urban model, highlighting the need for further exploration of action strategies for the latter.

THE PAPER
This paper explores the intermedial potential of Italo Calvino’s “Invisible Cities” (1972), focusing on its transformation into an opera and its broader implications for audience engagement. Calvino’s poetic meditation on urban spaces has inspired numerous adaptations, including a live opera staged throughout the Los Angeles Railway Station. This innovative production turned the station into a dynamic performance space, where travellers became part of the narrative, experiencing the soundscape through headphones.

By examining this adaptation, the paper highlights how “Invisible Cities” situates itself within the frameworks of intermediality and community opera, showcasing its role in making opera more accessible and inclusive. Specifically, it will focus on how this intermedial approach impacts different audience demographics, including:

• young adults and students: engaging a demographic often seen as disconnected from traditional opera through innovative, immersive experiences.
• commuters and urban dwellers: transforming everyday spaces into artistic venues, making art a part of daily life.
• cultural enthusiasts and art patrons: offering a fresh perspective on opera, blending it with contemporary and accessible formats.

The paper argues that “Invisible Cities” exemplifies the potential for literature to inspire intermedia development, reshaping our understanding of literary and artistic practices on a global scale. How do such intermedial transformations impact audience perception and participation? Can they democratise both literature and opera and make them more inclusive art forms?

As we look to the future, literature, especially the classics, and opera, particularly the more recent and more experimental works, must continue to innovate and reach out to diverse audiences. By embracing intermedial approaches, these art forms can remain vibrant and relevant, fostering new connections and ensuring their enduring legacy.

THE SUMMER SCHOOL
The International Summer School WISD: Word, Image, Scene, and Digital transformations, dedicated to Opera and to its adaptations and dissemination, is part of the Research Project Polimnia. Opera for All! By adopting a fresh approach to Opera, Polimnia aims to enhance public appreciation of Italy‘s cultural, artistic, and musical heritage, thereby boosting its appeal and international recognition.

Opera serves as a quintessential representation of Italy’s national culture, artistic and musical heritage. The theoretical framework adopted is that of Community Opera, an approach that originated in the UK in 1970 and has since been developed in many countries around the world. The literature on Community Opera offers resources for a deeper understanding of opera production, from a perspective of inclusive co-construction, cultural growth, and social change.

Currently, Opera is not for everyone; it is often seen as an outdated repertoire, far removed from the artistic-musical experiences that engage young people. It is perceived as a “niche”, an “elite form of art”, too expensive and difficult to understand.

The Summer School, held in English, will take place at the Conservatorio Vecchi-Tonelli, Modena, 22-25 September, and will focus on the following topics:

• Valorisation of the cultural, artistic, and musical heritage of lesser-known Italian texts and musical scores.
• Diachronic examination of the literary, linguistic, historical, musical and scenic contexts that influenced the creation and performance of Italian Opera.
• Strategies, forms, and models aimed at increase the attractiveness of Italian Opera for new generations, emphasising inclusion, training, and education, in line with the adaptation of the international model of Community Opera.
• Case studies on participatory opera (co-creation of Opera with local communities, involving various professional skills, resources, and specific local characteristics, reusing repertoires, venues, and infrastructures not currently utilised for these purposes).
• Rewritings, remediations, and digital adaptations in the production and performance of Opera nowadays.

There is a current need for exploring new mobility systems - and related narratives - that could help in addressing the challenges caused by climate change. As such, this paper aims to unveil the counter-discourses that promote cycling as a sustainable means of transport and an ecological solution to the current climate crisis. It identifies the main conceptual metaphors of contemporary emerging mobility as framed by Spanish, English and Dutch-speaking cycling advocates. The data, which includes 95 metaphors, were retrieved from X (Twitter), and analyzed qualitatively. Expanding upon the established strategies for challenging dominant metaphors (Gibbs & Siman 2021, Van Poppel & Pilgram 2023), we investigated the workings of resistance metaphors in the discourse of cycling activists. The study showed that partial resistance metaphors elaborate on the source domains of institutionalized mappings (city is a body, traffic is a circulatory system). They profile motorized mobility as an agent of disease (e.g., blood clot, drug, virus), which negatively affects the city as a whole; alternatively, they also foreground cycling as a potential healer (e.g., cycling infrastructure as band-aids or surgery). Additionally, complete resistance metaphors expose the drawbacks of motorized mobility and envisage alternative urban mobility designs through the introduction of new source domains (cities are ecosystems, cities are houses). The contribution of these metaphors to the current discourse on urban mobility ranges from an opposition to motonormativity to emphasizing cycling as a solution and promoting new kinds of urban co-existence. The underlying reconceptualization of the city from its perception as a (mechanized) body to that of a house or ecosystem also reveals a shift in its function from being a space for moving to being a space for living.

Climate change in general and recent floods in particular in Serbia urges for creative, efficient and effective adaptation and mitigation measures to be implemented in urban and rural areas, especially in the field of transport and urban and rural tourism development. The experience show that 'hard' measures in the field of transport are costly and take time to implement, and that they have to be followed with 'soft' measures which cover the issues of management and organization in transportation sector and raising travel awareness towards more sustainable modes of transport among citizens and decision makers. This shift calls for complex conception of new adaptive planning, governance and management approaches and instruments to sustainable urban and rural development and mobility in an integrated way that is context sensitive. This paper will present contemporary theoretical and practical European approaches in the field of sustainable urban and rural development and mobility management and their applicability in Serbia aiming to identify possible directions for improvement and use specific management instruments that might work in this context. Our methodology is based on the case study framed in the elaboration of strategic project 'Integral Plan for the Sustainable Development of Rural Tourism in Eastern Serbia' in Golubac, Kladovo, Majdanpek and Negotin done within the umbrella of larger GIZ project 'Municipal economic development in the Danube Region'. We argue that it is possible to work within the community, with ordinary people, households, vine producers, and with local government representatives, incrementally, tr ough site visits talking with people, participative interactive workshops and formal presentations in order to build trust, raise awareness and recommend sustainable measures and projects in the field of mobility and travel awareness for urban and rural tourism development aiming at identifying possible improvement directions in Serbian context.

The escalating energy crisis, heightened environmental awareness and the impacts of climate change have driven global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. A key strategy in this transition is the adoption of green energy technologies particularly for charging electric vehicles (EVs). According to the U.S. Department of Energy, EVs utilize approximately 60% of their input energy during operation, twice the efficiency of conventional fossil fuel vehicles. However, the environmental benefits of EVs are heavily dependent on the source of electricity used for charging. This study examines the potential of renewable energy (RE) as a sustainable alternative for electric vehicle (EV) charging by analyzing several critical dimensions. It explores the current RE sources used in EV infrastructure, highlighting global adoption trends, their advantages, limitations, and the leading nations in this transition. It also evaluates supporting technologies such as energy storage systems, charging technologies, power electronics, and smart grid integration that facilitate RE adoption. The study reviews RE-enabled smart charging strategies implemented across the industry to meet growing global EV energy demands. Finally, it discusses key challenges and prospects associated with grid integration, infrastructure upgrades, standardization, maintenance, cybersecurity, and the optimization of energy resources. This review aims to serve as a foundational reference for stakeholders and researchers seeking to advance the sustainable development of RE based EV charging systems.

Introduction PT in SA constitutes minibus taxis (MBT), subsidised buses, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) (Rea Vaya, MyCiTi, Go George, & A Re Yeng), Gautrain (high speed rail), and passenger rail (Metro rail, Shosholoza Meyl). Since 2010, SA has been enhancing its PT services, including launching the Gautrain rapid rail in Gauteng and the BRT system in five provinces (Mthimkulu, 2017). Despite some PT improvements, it has remained a challenge to Highlights • Commuters in developing countries spend up to a third of income on commuting trips. • Public transit in South Africa is often perceived insecure and unsafe. • Poor perception of security and safety tends to discourage public transit use. • Captive users tend to continue using public transit despite experiencing crime. • Young people perceived public transit security and safety risks less than older people.

Rapid urbanization and informal urban development sweeping across African cities underscore a complex yet inadequately explored link between urban form and mode choice. Extensively studied in Western urban settings, these dynamics when applied to African cities remain a relatively unexplored realm, necessitating an extensive empirical review. This paper explores how various aspects of urban form correlate with mode choices in African urban contexts. A systematic review approach was used to filter journal papers published between 2000 and 2023 in Africa. The application of the (filtering) methodology identified 22 studies from the African region as most suitable for review. The review reveals that high-density and mixed-use areas in African cities significantly promote non-motorized transport and public transit. Infrastructure development and improved connectivity further enhance these sustainable modes. Socioeconomic factors, governance policies, and cultural norms also play pivotal roles in shaping mode choices and urban mobility patterns. However, high-density cities like Abuja and Nairobi face unique challenges such as overcrowding in public transport and walking facilities. Sprawling cities like Lagos and Johannesburg struggle with inadequate public transport infrastructure, leading to a heavy reliance on private cars. Connectivity is crucial for supporting nonmotorized and public transport, particularly for lower-income groups who rely more on these modes and para-transit services than higher-income groups. The findings highlight the need for tailored urban planning strategies to address these challenges and harness existing opportunities, promoting more sustainable, inclusive, and efficient urban transportation systems in African cities. Moreover, this study discloses existing research gaps that warrant further exploration.

Urban mobility in the Global South presents unique challenges for public transport (PT) and emerging shared mobility (SM) services influenced by socio-economic factors, mobility attitudes, and urban form. This study examines the factors shaping mode choice behavior between PT and SM services in four communities each in Dubai and Lahore. Additionally, it analyses the impact of primary daily activities on PT and SM preferences in both cities. Data from 1,653 Dubai and 1,603 Lahore residents were analyzed using four binary logistic regression models. Results indicate that socio-demographic factors (age, gender, household car ownership, driver’s license possession, education level, and weekly commuting trips) and mobility attitudes (ride-sharing, ride-hailing, pro-personal car) significantly influence PT and SM choices. Key determinants vary by neighborhood type, including link-node ratio, intersection and road length density, and car and PT commute times. The influence of primary daily activities (work or study) on the choice of PT and SM modes was found to be moderate in Dubai. The study highlights the need for tailored urban and transport policies to promote sustainable modes, considering neighborhood characteristics and demographics.

Up till today, traffic congestion is still considered one of the most major challenges faced by cities and urban areas in the world generally, and in developing countries specifically.
In Greater Cairo, Egypt, with a population exceeding 20 million and foreseen to rapidly increase with the new developments in suburban Cairo and Gizah, the government is trying to prepare the city for the increase in vehicular density, in a city known for automobile dependency. With Heliopolis being a commercial, educational and administrative hub in the heart of east Cairo and the gate of access from New Cairo to Cairo, current and future congestion was no longer to be taken lightly.
Since late 2019, Cairo has been facing a series of “infrastructure development projects” that focus on streets’ widening and constructing flyovers, in an attempt to provide traffic flow and tackle current and future congestion. Such developments so far sacrificed massive areas of greenery and surface tram line.
This research aims to explain of the effects of transportation infrastructure development projects on users’ accessibility through studying the change in their commuting behaviour. Since the project did not include community participation, the research is using a behavioural theory to understand users’ accessibility.
This case study research takes place in Heliopolis, Cairo, and utilizes interviews, questionnaires, satellite images, secondary data and literature as data collecting instruments.
By the end of the study, it was deduced that accessibility was highly affected, even though it is still moderate. The study also recommends following a demand-based approach in tackling congestion instead of supply-based approaches mainly among other measures.
