Virtual organization is a recent way of work and work-flow organization between organizations or between departments within an organization. The principles, the tools and the type of organization, could be applied to library organization as well as to libraries' cooperation and coordination. This paper examines first the similarities and the differences between VO and LIS organization, attempting to identify possible common organization elements. The paper suggests that the fields in which VO in libraries could be applied are organizational synergies between libraries, consortia, scholarly communication, benchmarking etc. Consequently, the new roles and the necessary skills of librarians, and, accordingly, the demands for changes and adaptation in their education or continuing education curricula are highlighted.

Observes that in today’s digital world, not many things continue to operate in the traditional manner. This is because the ways of living and working demand new technology, new tools and new methods. This is the case for libraries too. They have to adapt to this new digital world because their traditional way of working with books and papers cannot cover any more new customer demands and their applications. The advent of the virtual library is usually presented as a positive development for library users. Presents a new way of organizing such a virtual library, an interactive support software and an application using fractals and chaos models of the way this new approach can be used. Focuses on such applications because their important feature is not their final picture but the way in which this picture is generated, and changes through time.

One of the strengths of the book is that it brings much needed intellectual analysis to recent developments to the Internet and web culture. For too long, books and articles on this topic have been the domain of superficial cheerleading for new technologies. There has been a lack of philosophical and theoretical analysis, which this book provides in spades. This leads to the interesting question: Who is this book's intended audience? The book is of little practical use to a librarian. The complexity of the philosophical references and arguments put forth make the appropriate audience to be philosophy or semiotics graduate students. The authors make no reference to the appropriate library literature, despite the profession having written a great deal about controlled vocabularies and indexing language. For those who have an interest in the theory of knowledge systems or the semantic web, this book is a must read. Even though it is not a practical book and requires a commitment on the part of the reader, it can be fascinating, and in the case of the sections by Magee, a scintillating philosophical examination of the current state of scholarly communication.

Knowledge management (KM) is a quite timely technique of organization theory and management. The knowledge-based organization is the organization of the future and libraries have much to learn from industry and business for once more. The rules and the tools of KM may contribute to the information and knowledge sharing and delivery throughout the world, as the globalization has facilitated the communication. Consortia, consisted from libraries of various strength, power, age, collection, staff experience and specialization can operate according to these concepts of KM in order to enhance effectiveness and efficiency as well as to expertise the services of the member-libraries. Either in organizational level or in the services to users, the libraries-members of the consortia could benefit much more if they face them as a trans-organizational scheme of knowledge-based community. The paper will describe such a model coming from the industry and from the theory of the firm, adjusted to the library's context and functions. It will also attempt a brief reference to the benefits of the implementation. Introduction. One of the most complex issues facing libraries today is change management. The decisions libraries make are becoming more complex, the risks are greater, and the resources, both human and fiscal, are becoming scarcer. There are many key issues facing libraries today that relate to the ability of the library to allocate and make maximum use of these scarce resources. 1 The productivity and the innovation are the factors, which generate the value. Both of them are applications of the knowledge in work. The fundamental social parts of the knowledge society nowadays are the "knowledge workers". The economic challenge of the post-capitalist society therefore will be the productivity of knowledge work and knowledge workers. Knowledge means a supreme good for use; knowledge is the means that leads to success of social and economic results. 2 The keys to success in this evolving new economy are situational awareness and flexibility, which can be achieved by implementing electronic systems that generate immediate (real-time) knowledge about internal functions and processes. Such systems make organizations dynamic, and flexible, thereby allowing rapid changes in their strategies and activities. Organizations can use this knowledge to create new internal and external structures and relationships, leading to further improvements in knowledge, which leads to continuous strategy improvements. 3 As knowledge and information leads to power, the performance of a contemporary organization actually equals to the usage of the communication channels. The implications of knowledge sharing for the new knowledge-based economy are substantial. Kong are pleased to welcome PACLIC again for the third time: the first was in 1995 and the second in 2001. Since our last PACLIC in Hong Kong, Language, Information and Computation, the principal concerns of PACLIC have increasingly impacted on human life and society, ranging from research underlying search engines to work on speech technology and mobile phone access. Interests in this field have blossomed considerably, with many truly global and regional conferences having been held in the Pacific Rim. They include ACL and IJCNLP (International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing), the flagship conference of the recently established Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP), of which PACLIC is a member.

Information Literacy is the library operation which makes the library user able to search, retrieve, evaluate, select and use the information resources. Information Literacy is the capability of critical thinking; it is the basis of the continuing education and self-education of the professionals. This skill is more important for Medical Scientists, as they face the continuing change of their discipline. The paper proves the significance of information literacy for the staff of the hospitals, as prerequisite of the qualitative services and the organisation of hospital libraries too. It uses comparative data of the state of the art of the Greek medical libraries and proposes the important items for the success of that innovative and cost-effective service.

In modern libraries it is essential to provide up-todate services that have to be efficiently developed using all valid technologies. In the meantime it is noticed that a lot of time and value is lost because of the misunderstanding between librarians and IT staff. By this fact, it is necessary a formative cooperation between professionals to be designed and implemented. This paper presents the principles of a successful cooperation in order to offer satisfactory services to Library's users. Considering a list of the most important services, tries to show which of them are able to be improved by a successful cooperation. It suggests ways to eliminate communication problems in order to develop existed or implement new services based on modern technologies. Finally, it concludes that cooperation between these two categories of staff is necessary to bring Libraries in the new era and it is a matter of the strategic planning of the organization to implement and achieve this.

The presentation focuses on the establishment of a new thematic library network in Greece encompassing the majority of organized maritime orientated collections within special and/or University libraries: The Maritime Libraries Network (MarLiNet). The Network originated from the initial cooperation of three libraries with significant maritime collections, namely those of the Eugenides Foundation Library, the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation Library and the Library of the University of the Aegean about a decade ago. The interest of the three institutions to cooperate on the maritime transport collections resulted in the signing, in 2010, of a first Memorandum of cooperation and in the establishment of the “Triangle of Maritime Libraries” with the written intent for it to become one day a “Polygon”. This case study describes how one autistic learner, an 11-year-old boy, became a co-researcher with university literacy instructors to investigate how hypermedia can help him develop language and literacy skills. Data was collected for one year from video taping, journal notes, interviews with teachers and parents, test scores, and student artifacts of reading and writing samples. Researchers learned that fast-paced behavioral games were a detriment to learning language processes, whereas talking books on CD-ROM, schematic mapping software, and simulations helped the learner to increase reading and writing competencies. The learner's scores doubled every six months in reading and writing. (Contains 17 references.)
