In this study we explore the existing research on Asian Americans and helpseeking behavior, focusing primarily on Filipino Americans and the cultural variables of face and language. Although some important and specific cultural factors have been hypothesized to affect the helpseeking behaviors of ethnic minorities, very few empirical studies have been conducted to specifically test these hypotheses. To fill the gaps in previous research, we examined the influence of concern with face and of language abilities on helpseeking behavior for mental health problems among Filipino Americans. In addition, to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of helpseeking behavior, we divided the mental health care systems into four categories: lay, mental health specialty, general practitioner, and folk systems. Data are from the Filipino American Epidemiological Study (FACES) survey. The main statistical method we employed was logistic regression. Results from the descriptive analyses reveal that the lay system is the most frequently used source of care compared with the other systems of professional and folk systems for Filipino Americans. Furthermore, findings from the main effects models suggest that face and language are important cultural factors that contribute to the helpseeking behavior of Filipino Americans, but they have different influences on the four types of mental health care systems. The interaction analyses indicate that concern with face interacts with language abilities when predicting use of the lay system and the general medical sector. Despite these findings, to fully understand the dynamics of helpseeking, other cultural factors and longitudinal studies are needed.

The concept of 'mixed blood' is not a new one; however, it was not until 1982 that an unprecedented policy entitled 'The Amerasian Act' was created by the US government. Focusing on the author's ethnographic fi eldwork in South Korea and the US, this article will unpack the assumptions underlying the seemingly religious statement 'the American thing to do' in terms of US policy, where ostensibly scientifi c notions of 'race', blood and identity are employed. In this way, the limitations of the new law are legitimized. The Amerasian Act of 1982 specifi cally gives immigration visas (fi rst and fourth visa preferences or single or married sons and daughters of a US citizen) to Amerasians who were fathered by a US citizen between 1 January 1950 and 1 October 1982 in Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Kampuchea, or Thailand, not citizenship. What does it mean to be 'fathered by' in the context of 'race', nation and politics? The troublesome notion of 'fathering' is complicated by the Department of Defense's informal sanctioning of prostitution near US military installations overseas. Several countries, particularly in Asia, have had a long history of US and UN military presence and along with this a system of prostitution catering to soldiers' 'entertainment'. Katharine Moon argues in her book Sex Among Allies: Military Prostitution in US-Korea Relations that 'private relations among people and foreign relations between governments inform and are informed by each other'. 4 She explores how and why women became symbols of Korean-US assurances and commitments of the US military presence in South Korea. With this structural set-up of 'legal/illegal' prostitution, many male soldiers thought of themselves as having sexual relations with local women and in many cases nothing beyond that, not imagining themselves as fathers.

Sonay: A Wari Orthogonal Cellular Center in the Camana Valley, Peru The site of Sonay is located in the Camana Valley of southern Peru. Investigations in the 1990s revealed the presence of a Wari center at the site, identified by its characteristic orthogonal architecture. Testing of the site recovered two radiocarbon samples that provided tenth century dates for the construction of the center. Few artifactual remains were recovered, suggesting a brief occupation of the site. Descriptions of the research are presented, together with an interpretation of the significance of the results. The late dates for the center support the emerging view that Wari political power lasted considerably longer that early researchers had indicated.
