Vowel Recognition

One of the tasks in forensic linguistics, especially forensic phonetics, is evaluating the speech sounds in the recordings. The speech evaluation aims at identifying and verifying speakers to predict if the sound were spoken by the suspect or not. The common problem in the task is determining which acoustic features of the speech sounds are reliable for the speaker identification and verification. The purpose of this research is studying formant frequencies to predict high vowel sounds /i/, and /u/ by using artificial neural network (ANN). Using three various normalization methods (i.e., softmax, z-score and sigmoid), we utilized multilayer perceptron on backpropagation ANN with the architectural models of 4-5-2, 4-10-2 and 4-20-2. The results show that the z-score normalization method provides higher accuracy than the other two in all formations and the 4-10-2 formation has shown the highest accuracy (92.26%).

This study presents a novel approach to vowel classification in Sylheti using image-based textural analysis. Traditional methods, which often rely on formant frequencies or Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), have been supplemented in this research with an automated image-processing technique that quantifies vowel characteristics through texture features. The study employs FOS (First Order Statistics), GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix), GLSZM (Gray Level Size Zone Matrix), GLRLM (Gray Level Run Length Matrix), and GLDM (Gray Level Dependence Matrix) to capture the unique acoustic properties of five Sylheti vowels [a, E, i, O, and u]. The Random Forest classifier, applied to these features, demonstrates impressive accuracy, with an average AUC (Area Under the Curve) of 0.94, showing the robustness of the proposed method. The results reveal significant insights into the articulatory and acoustic distinctions among the vowels, highlighting the potential of textural analysis in advancing speech recognition technologies. Future work will aim to refine the feature extraction process and explore more sophisticated machine learning algorithms to further improve classification accuracy.

The Support Vector Machine (SVM) has recently been introduced as a new pattern classification technique. It learns the boundary regions between samples belonging to two classes by mapping the input samples into a high dimensional space, and seeking a separating hyperplane in this space. This paper describes an application of SVMs to two phoneme recognition problems: 5 Thai tones, and 12 Thai vowels spoken in isolation. The best results on tone recognition are 96.09% and 90.57% for the inside test and outside test, respectively, and on vowel recognition are 95.51% and 87.08% for the inside test and outside test, respectively.

Automatic speaker identification has become a challenging research problem due to its wide variety of applications. Neural networks and audiovisual identification systems can be very powerful, but they have limitations related to the number of speakers. The performance drops gradually as more and more users are registered with the system. This paper proposes a scalable algorithm for real-time text-independent speaker identification based on vowel recognition. Vowel formants are unique across different speakers and reflect the vocal tract information of a particular speaker. The contribution of this paper is the design of a scalable system based on vowel formant filters and a scoring scheme for classification of an unseen instance. Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) have both been analysed for comparison to extract vowel formants by windowing the given signal. All formants are filtered by known formant frequencies to separate the vowel formants for further processing. The formant frequencies of each speaker are collected during the training phase. A test signal is also processed in the same way to find vowel formants and compare them with the saved vowel formants to identify the speaker for the current signal. A score-based scheme allows the speaker with the highest matching formants to own the current signal. This model requires less than 100 bytes of data to be saved for each speaker to be identified, and can identify the speaker within a second. Tests conducted on multiple databases show that this score-based scheme outperforms the back propagation neural network and Gaussian mixture models. Usually, the longer the speech files, the more significant were the improvements in accuracy.

Cette étude porte sur les voyelles catalanes produites par des adolescentes multilingues en Catalan-Castillan ayant pour langue maternelle soit le Catalan, soit le Roumain, soit l'Arabe du Maghreb. Nous proposons à vingt-et-un auditeurs catalanophones natifs un Test de Catégorisation Libre des voyelles produites dans ce contexte multilingue. Ce faisant, nous testons le modèle Automatic Selective Perception (ASP-Strange, 2011) qui stipule qu'en fonction de la variabilité des stimuli et de la tâche proposée, les auditeurs réalisent un traitement des stimuli selon un mode phonétique ou phonologique. Les résultats indiquent que le traitement des stimuli est double : les voyelles moyennes sont traitées selon un mode phonétique, tandis que les voyelles extrêmes sont traitées selon un mode phonologique. L'assimilation de voyelles d'une catégorie vocalique à une autre informe sur la qualité des réalisations non natives et témoigne de l'influence de la L1.

A self-supervised learning algorithm using fuzzy set and the concept of guard zones around the class representative vectors is presented and demonstrated for vowel recognition. An optimum guard zone having the best match with the fully supervised performance is determined. Results are also compared with that of nonsupervised case for various orders of input patterns.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) has made great strides with the development of digital signal processing hardware and software especially using English as the language of choice. In this paper, a new feature extraction method is presented to identify vowels recorded from 80 Malaysian speakers. The features were obtained from vocal tract model based on bandwidth (BW) approach. Bandwidth approach identifies frequency bands based on the first peak of vowel frequency responses. Mean and maximum energies were calculated from these Bandwidth frequency bands. Classification results from bandwidth approach were compared with the first 3-formant features using Linear Predictive method. A multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and multinomial logistic regression (MLR) were used to classify the vowels. MLR and MLP shows comparable classification results for BW approach of 96.40% and 96.59% respectively. Bandwidth approach obtained 5.49% higher classification rate than 3-formant features using MLP.

Cued Speech is a sound-based system, which uses handshapes in different positions and in combination with lippatterns of speech, and makes all the sounds of spoken language clearly understandable to deaf and hearing-impaired people. The aim of Cued Speech is to overcome the problems of lip reading and thus enable deaf children and adults to wholly understand spoken language. Cued Speech recognition requires gesture recognition and lip shape recognition. In addition, the integration of the two components is of great importance. This article presents hidden Markov model (HMM)-based vowel recognition as used in Cued Speech for French. Based on concatenative feature fusion and multi-stream HMM decision fusion, lip shape and hand position components were integrated into a single component, and automatic vowel recognition was realized. In the case of multi-stream HMM decision fusion, the obtained vowel classication accuracy using lip shape and hand position information was 87.6%, showing absolute improvement of 19.6% in comparison with a use restricted only to lip parameters. The results achieved show the effectiveness of the proposed approaches to Cued Speech recognition.

Quatre apprenantes japonophones (EXP) ont beneficie d'un entrainement de prononciation avec retrocontrole par ultrason pour produire /u/-/y/ francais. Elles ont ete enregistrees avant (ENR1), une semaine apres (ENR2), et deux mois apres l'entrainement (ENR3). Trois autres apprenantes (CTR) ont aussi ete enregistrees deux fois. Seize francophones natifs ont ecoute des stimuli (4 occurrences de /y/ et /u/ isoles) prononces par chaque locutrice a ENR1, 2, et 3, et ont identifie la voyelle avec une note. En ENR1, une EXP a produit le /u/ avec une note moyenne superieure a 2/3 ; en ENR2 et ENR3, le /u/ de 2 EXP (ENR2) et celui de 3 EXP (ENR3) atteint une note superieure a 2. Cellle des CTR n'a pas depasse 1,3. Le retour ultrason est donc utile pour /u/, dont la position de la langue est invisible.

Dans cet article, nous examinons l'acquisition de la compétence sociolinguistique par des apprenants italophones de FLE, par le biais d'un phénomène variationnel typique du français, le schwa, dans deux constructions différentes : dans les formes verbales du type « je_C » (ex. « je peux ») ainsi que dans le maintien ou la chute du morphème de négation « ne » dans les constructions « ne…pas ». La chute du schwa dans les constructions « je_C » semblant constituer un trait variationnel plus avancé que celle du « ne », le comportement des apprenants devrait se différencier selon leur parcours d'apprentissage. Pour tester cette hypothèse, les productions des conversations guidées du projet IPFC-italien et IPFC-Suisse de quatre groupes d'apprenants sont examinées : des apprenants italiens débutants, n'ayant pas effectué de séjour en milieu francophone, des apprenants italiens plus avancés sans et avec séjour ainsi que des apprenants italophones suisses avancés actuellement en immersion. Les résultats montrent que, si le niveau de formation et le contexte d'apprentissage sont importants, les apprenants suisses se détachent des trois autres groupes. L'importance du statut de la langue ciblelangue nationale pour les Suisses vs langue étrangère pour les Italiensdans la construction de leur identité d'apprenant semble également jouer un rôle non négligeable.

セブアノ語は固有語では 3 母音体系を有し、フィリピンでタガログ語に次いで母語話者
の多い言語である。本稿ではセブアノ語を母語とする日本語学習者を対象に、日本語の母
音の聞き誤りについて予備的な考察を行った。
特殊拍の誤りが最も多く、次いで母音の誤りが多かった。特殊拍の誤りは母語を問わず
見られるものであることから、母音の誤りは本稿で扱った学習者に特徴的なものであると
言えるだろう。母音の聞き誤りのほとんどはイ段・エ段間、ウ段・オ段間に見られたが、
その誤りの傾向には個人差が見られた。本稿では 3 名の学習者について考察を行ったが、1
名はウ段・オ段間、特に拗音をともなう音で誤りが多かった。他の 1 名は半狭母音を聞い
た際に狭母音と判断する誤りが多かった。もう 1 名は母音の聞き誤りが少なかった。
フィリピンは多言語国家であるが、フィリピン諸語で日本語よりも母音が少ない言語は
ほかにも多く存在する。セブアノ語以外を母語とする学習者や、母音の発話の面からの検
証も必要であると考える。

It can be assumed that native Cebuano speakers who are learning the Japanese language have
trouble in differentiating the different Japanese vowels. This is because the Cebuano language has
only three vowels: /i/, /a/, and /u/.
This study aims to observe the method by which Cebuano native speakers recognize Japanese
language vowels.
I recorded and analyzed the data of three learners through the word quizzes on which they took
dictations. The result shows that some of them find it difficult to differentiate /o/ from /u/ and /e/
from /i/; however, this depends on the abilities of the individuals.

Nous présentons une évaluation perceptive des voyelles françaises /y/ et /u/ produites par des apprenants hispanophones et japonophones dans le cadre du projet InterPhonologie du Français Contemporain (IPFC). The /y-u/ vowels in the IPFC project: a perceptual assessment of native, Spanish
and Japanese learners’ productions.
We present a perceptual study of the French vowels /y/ and /u/ produced by Spanish
and Japanese learners, in the framework of the InterPhonology of Contemporary French
(IPFC) project. To evaluate the quality of realization of their productions, we carried out
two experiments in which 58 native listeners had to identify the vowel (/y-u/) of
monosyllables produced by one group of native speakers, two categories of Spanish
learners, and two categories of Japanese learners in a repetition and a reading task. The
results globally show a population effect – a better identification for the natives – a task
effect – a better identification in the repetition task – and, for the Spanish learners, a
vowel effect – a higher identification rate for /u/ than for /y/. They also reveal
differences between Spanish and Japanese learners, and between the two categories of
learners within each group, which differ in terms of degree of L2 exposure.
