User Interface Design

Meerkat is a tool for visualization and community mining of social networks. It is being developed to offer novel algorithms and functionality that other tools do not possess. Meerkat's features include navigation through graphical representations of networks, network querying and filtering, a multitude of graphical layout algorithms, community mining using recently developed algorithms, and dynamic network event analysis using recently published algorithms. These features will allow more insightful exploratory analysis and more robust inferences about communities and the significance of entity relationships. Meerkat is under active development, and future features will include additional options for community mining and visualization, focusing on algorithms and user interface designs not existing in other social network analysis tools.

Larger display surfaces are becoming increasingly available due to multi-monitor capability built into many systems, in addition to the rapid decrease in their costs. However, little is known about the performance benefits of using these larger surfaces compared to traditional single-monitor displays. Machine Translation (MT) has experienced remarkable improvements and consequently grown in popularity of late. It now functions not only as an end in itself but also as a valuable asset to be exploited by translators in the promising practice of post-editing the outcome of MT systems, which can yield faster and sometimes more accurate results. Most systems, however, were not originally designed having translators envisaged as potential users, which leaves a high demand for tools capable of catering for this new translation modality. With the purpose of showcasing what researchers and the industry have to offer in that respect, this study provides a review of a number of currently available translation tools from the perspective of translation post-editing. We have selected and described toolkits according to a set of criteria, highlighting main differences and similarities between them and also making mention of desirable features that have not been satisfactorily presented by any of the toolkits analysed.

Collaborative systems have emerged as one of the most relevant future working environments. These systems offer a working way that allow new human cooperation strategies based on new interaction paradigms, which take into account not only individuals, but also groups. Due to the relevance of this new collaborative systems usage, it is important to provide new solutions to the construction of robust and complete collaborative systems. The starting point is the description of the system by using ontologies at different abstraction levels. Parts of this description will be connected with the architectural design of groupware applications. From the user interaction point of view, we propose the inclusion of new interaction paradigms (ubiquitous computing, augmented reality, etc.) within the development process of new usability and accessibility engineering methodologies. In addition, new interaction patterns which support the user interface design process and multi-agent systems that support the user interface adaptativity of the collaborative environment are included among other things. This document reports the results of the first twenty months of the project life.

Lack of good user interfaces has been a major impediment to the acceptance and routine use of health-care professional workstations. Health-care providers, and the environment in which they practice, place strenuous demands on the interface. User interfaces must be designed with greater consideration of the requirements, cognitive capabilities, and limitations of the end-user. The challenge of gaining better acceptance and achieving widespread use of clinical information systems will be accentuated as the variety and complexity of multi-media presentation increases. Better understanding of issues related to cognitive processes involved in human-computer interactions is needed in order to design interfaces that are more intuitive and more acceptable to health-care professionals. Critical areas which deserve immediate attention include: improvement of pen-based technology, development of knowledge-based techniques that support contextual presentation, and development of new strategies and metrics to evaluate user interfaces. Only with deliberate attention to the user interface, can we improve the ways in which information technology contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of health-care providers.

A collection of user interface design patterns for workflow information systems is presented. Each Workflow User Interface Pattern (WUIP) is characterized by properties expressed in the PLML markup language for expressing patterns and augmented by additional attributes and models attached to the pattern: the abstract user interface and the corresponding task model. These models are specified in a User Interface Description Language. All WUIPs are stored in a library and can be retrieved within a workflow editor that links each workflow pattern to its corresponding WUIP, thus giving rise to a user interface for each workflow pattern. The software then gathers these UIs and the ones corresponding to workflow tasks into a user interface flow, a new concept introduced for specifying the intertwining of interfaces used by workers and the workflow manager in a single workflow.

This research is to understand how evaluation is being used in managing IT investment. IT investment evaluation is an area to investigate mainly in the rise of computerized information system usage that rapidly growing with the support of latest technology, customer’s demand and investment by the organization. In fact, it is not completely understood and valued by organization or government. In order to be competent, the evaluation should be assessed and justified. However, its implementation is hazy yet few organizations are aware of such evaluation implementation. Evaluation research is inadequate in public sectors and hardly reported especially in Malaysia. Actor Network Theory (ANT) is used to study the agents involved in IT evaluation practices and determine the influence of evaluation practices in local authority in Malaysia. In addition, this research will identify the impact of evaluation methodology employment towards the current issues from the ANT perspectives. This qualitative study approach was conducted in local authorities, focusing on pre and post evaluation of information system invested. ANT offered heterogeneity in describing and understanding the interrelationship of socio-technical aspect in IT investment evaluation analysis for Malaysian local authority. The findings revealed that lack of formal IT investment evaluation, low awareness level on the importance of evaluation, less exposure on the evaluation methodology and inappropriate appraisals of the proposed IT investment projects caused certain local authorities unable to deliver the benefits expected. With lack of formal IT evaluation, organization loses benefits and waste resources.

This study proposes usability principles for the user interfaces (UI) design of complex 3D parametric architectural design and engineering tools. Numerous usability principles have been developed for generic desktop or web applications. The authors tried to apply existing usability principles as guidelines for evaluating complex 3D design and engineering applications. However, the principles were too generic and high-level to be useful as design or evaluation guidelines. The authors, all with more than 10 or 30 years of experience with various CAD systems, selected and reviewed 10 state-of-the-art 3D parametric design and engineering applications and captured what they thought were best practices, as screenshots and videos. The collected best practices were reviewed through a series of discussion sessions. During the discussion sessions, UI design principles underlying the collected best practices were characterized in the line of existing UI principles. Based on the best practices and the derived common UI principles, a new set of refined and detailed UI principles were proposed for improving and evaluating 3D parametric engineering design tools in the future.

In view of distinctive information needs and skills among users, we ought to evaluate if existing information retrieval systems are competent to cater for these users. The present study highlights the feasibility of search engine for children with special needs, specifically children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The objective of this study is to investigate the utilization of a search engine for the purpose of learning and entertainment of children with ASD. The shortcomings of the existing commercial search engines in terms of accommodating the needs of these children will be discussed. Finally, based on the survey analysis from the mediators, important criteria of a search engine user interface design for children with ASD were proposed.

Property specifications are often used in requirements engineering to concisely describe a single aspect of system behavior. Although each property has a narrow focus, it can still be difficult to specify a property correctly. There are often subtle, but important, details in desired system behavior that can easily be overlooked, and there is little guidance available for how to avoid such mistakes. In addition to capturing these details correctly, property specifications should be (a) precise enough to support automated analyses that can be used to check that actual system behavior is consistent with the specifications, and (b) understandable enough to be readily comprehended by all system developers. Property specifications can be written in a mathematical formalism, which provides precision, but such formalisms are often difficult to understand. Thus, in practice, property specifications tend to be written in natural language. Property specifications written with such informality are often ambiguous, however, and usually cannot be used in many types of automated analyses.

To address these challenges, our approach supports elicitation and specification of properties by providing templates that build on commonly-occurring property patterns. These templates offer guidance by explicitly indicating the variations that must be considered, thereby ensuring that important subtle details are not overlooked. To support the use of this approach, we developed PROPEL, for “PROPerty ELucidator.” PROPEL provides three alternative views that users can work with to specify properties: graphical finite-state automata, which offer precision; “disciplined” natural language, which offers understandability; and question trees, which offer guidance for selecting a template.

To evaluate this approach, we used PROPEL to specify properties in five case studies in the medical domain. The case studies showed that our approach was effective at specifying the vast majority of the properties we encountered. We also undertook a small empirical study that showed that the disciplined natural language view of the properties was usually understood. These results indicate that our approach to property elicitation and specification is a promising one.

This ongoing research project is concerned with people’s perceptions regarding simplicity and complexity of user interface (UI) design of interactive systems. Human-computer interaction (HCI) experts suggest that simplicity is a key factor in enhancing system usability. According to this view, simplicity enables users to achieve their goals efficiently and effectively, and by that to enhance their satisfaction. Recent voices in the HCI community, however, have observed that people actually prefer complex interfaces to simpler ones (e.g., Norman, 2007). Both teaching and learning user interface (UI) design is difficult, especially because it is a discipline that has grown by trial-and-error, rather than by theory; there is little theory available on the design of user interfaces. Moreover, UI design theory encompasses both a wide range of approaches and various levels of abstraction. Another problem is its multidisciplinary nature: besides software engineering, disciplines like perception theory, media design, task analysis and user engagement psychology are required . These various disciplines must be made to cooperate as effectively as possible, which requires good project management .

Then, it studies Flat illustrations that are added to user interfaces to help users imagine things better, enhance the brand identity of the UI and make texts and interactions easier to understand. The researcher then reviewed samples of Flat illustrations done for universal user interfaces. Finally, a practical study was made to examine the importance of using Flat illustrations in mobile app’s UI. While globalization has resulted in shorter distances between individuals, cross-cultural problems arise in many aspects, especially communication conflicts caused by cultural diversity. remarked that culture is communication and communication is culture, and therefore, the way people communicate and the way they perceive communication is culturally influenced . In other words, the choices of communication styles depend on cognitive differences reflected in cultural diversity, and such dependence may disrupt or stop communication altogether . The influence of cultural diversity on communication also exists or is even more serious during computer-based communication, which refers to a wide variety of communication systems, ranging from electronic mail to the international conferences distributed over the Internet. Although computer-based communication shortens time spans and abridges geographical distances, it exacerbates the ambiguity and misunderstanding among communication parties with different cultural backgrounds by replacing direct human interaction with human-computer interaction. To overcome this dilemma, it is necessary to consider and highlight cross-cultural influences as early as in the design phase of computer-based communication systems, especially in the design of user interfaces.

Through a study of web site design practice, we observed that designers employ multiple representations of web sites as they progress through the design process, and that these representations allow them to focus on different aspects of the design. Designers also employ multiple tools during the course of a project, including graphic design, web development, presentation, and word processing software, as well as pen and paper. Sketching on paper is especially important during the design exploration phase of a project, when designers wish to explore many design possibilities quickly without focusing on low-level details. Web site design tools intended to support the early phases of the design process should employ informal interaction techniques, should support multiple site representations, and should integrate well with other applications that designers use regularly.

Justice systems around the world are launching online courts and tribunals in order to improve access to justice, especially for self-represented litigants (SRLs). Online courts are designed to handhold SRLs throughout the process and empower them to make procedural and substantive decisions. To that end, they present SRLs with streamlined and simplified procedures and employ a host of user interface design and user experience strategies (UI/UX). Disclosed is a decompaction system for reading compacted paralled data from a memory and providing in real time uncompacted serial data therefrom. The decompaction system is especially suited to be utilized in pin electronics automatic test equipment for real time testing of units such as integrated circuits, circuit boards, etc. The decompaction system includes a separate channel for each pin of the unit under test (UUT) and is capable of decoding a number of types of compacted parallel data and providing serail data to each pin of the UUT in the most prevalently used test patterns. The data is compacted by software algorithms according to these patterns, stored in a memory and retrieved and decoded by the decompaction system during real-time testing of the UUT. A usable medical information system should allow for reliable and accurate interaction between users and the system in emergencies. A participatory design approach was used to develop a medical information system in two Turkish hospitals. The process consisted of task and user analysis, an icon design survey, initial icon design, final icon design and evaluation, and installation of the iconic medical information system with the icons. We observed work sites to note working processes and tasks related to the information system and interviewed medical personnel. Les futures générations sauront utiliser un ordinateur et naviguer sur l’Internet dès leur plus tendre enfance. Ces jeunes personnes auront des nouvelles manières d’apprendre en fonction de ces technologies émergentes. Beaucoup de recherches ont été faites en ce qui concerne la conversion des notes de cours du format papier au format électronique dans le but d’entreposer du matériel de cours sur l’Internet. Cependant, beaucoup de recherche reste à faire en ce qui concerne l’évaluation à distance. Une majeure partie des sites Internet ayant des capacités évaluatives est composée de questions de type « vrai ou faux » ou à choix multiples. Cet article expose les résultats préliminaires d’un projet de recherche doctoral consacré au développement de modèle servant à implanter des tâches d’évaluation en ligne complexes en contexte authentique. Elles pourront être des scénarios d’apprentissage, des portefeuilles, des exercices interactifs ainsi que des questions ouvertes. Afin de réaliser ces tâches d’évaluation, différents types de modèles seront proposés. Le premier type de modèle sera un modèle d’interface usager servant à afficher les tâches d’évaluation. Le second type de modèle sera un modèle de données permettant d’entreposer les tâches d’évaluation dans des bases de données. Finalement, le troisième type de modèle sera des modèles éducationnels permettant aux enseignants d’utiliser ces tâches d’évaluation sous format électronique dans leurs cours.

The paper describes the application of artificial intelligence methods to create a knowledge-based system supporting HCI-related activities in e-commerce software development process. A frame-based ontology was built to represent various levels of HCI knowledge, such as models, principles, and guide-lines, and deliver them depending on a concrete inter-action context. E-commerce website business goals and target user attributes were proposed as major factors defining the project context. The above concepts were explored in detail, their formal attributes extracted and implemented as slots of the respective ontology classes.

Gamification, which attracted the attention of researchers and academics, has been the subject of many researches and studies. The purpose of this is the benefits of gamification over the engagement between users and the interface design and the experience. In line with this aim, elements related to the concept of gamification, models and related motivational theories are explained in detail and the elements that should be considered for a qualified and usable user interface (UI) design are examined. The usage rate and appreciation rate of educational mobile applications using gamification were selected and the effect of gamification on the usability of interface design was evaluated. As a result of this study, the interface design of a new application called "Quistudy", which uses the elements of gamification in order to improve usability and development, has been designed. The usability tests of the application were performed and the success rate of the interface design was measured. In this manner, the effect of gamification usage on interface design in educational mobile applications and the contribution of interface design to effective use of gamification elements were evaluated.

Günümüzde, geniş kitlere ulaşan ve eğlence sektörünü oluşturan mobil oyunlar büyük bir endüstri haline gelmiştir. Bir mobil oyun oluşturulurken, fikir aşamasından kullanıcıya ulaşmasına kadar geçen süreçte yazılımcı ve tasarımcının ortak çalışması gerekmektedir. Bu ortak çalışma sürecinde kullanıcılar üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahip olan grafik tasarım, illüstrasyon, animasyon ve arayüz tasarımları önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Bu araştırma mobil oyunlarda kullanıcı dostu arayüz ve grafik tasarımların estetik ve işlevsel yönü üzerine temellendirilmiştir.

The commercial use of the Internet for service provision has deeply changed the environment where human-computer interaction takes place. Web interfaces are now integrated in overall service provision, and are designed for a huge and diversified set of potential users, in an uncontrolled context. With the aim of understanding customer interaction needs and improving the methods of requirements elicitation in the web context, a qualitative study of a multi-channel Portuguese bank was made. The results obtained so far indicate that Interaction Design and Services Marketing have strong complementarities. The Marketing perspective is especially useful with regard to the study of customer experience requirements, which are increasingly influential in customer decisions to adopt Internet services. Essential use cases are also very useful in the multiple platform service context, as they allow the elicitation of experience requirements in a technology-independent way, and therefore allow an integrated management of the different interaction channels.

Over the last 15 years, a comprehensive range of international standards has been developed to de"ne the general principles of user-centred design and good practice in user interface design. Most of the standards specify general principles rather than the precise details of the interface. The paper brie#y describes how standards are created and reviews the de"nitions of usability. HCI and usability standards are described in the categories: usability de"nitions, use in context, software interface and interaction, hardware interface, documentation, the development process and capability of the organization. The applicability of the standards is discussed.

With the emergence of the pattern approach for software design researchers, software engineers and designers have started an intense discussion on patterns. This topic gained currency and is still evident in recent publications. Since then, debate has contained many conflicting theories, approaches, and ideas on the nature of patterns and their use in making the software development process more efficient.

User Interface (UI) is the part of the system that acts as an intermediately between the user and system facilitating the user to interact with the system in an efficient manner. The user interface is everything the end user comes into contact with while using the system physically, perceptually, and conceptually. To the end user, the user interface is the system itself. Hence, usability of a system remains one of the most important quality attribute in determining the total quality of any software system. The challenge of user-interface design is to construct a natural dialog sequence that allows the user and computer to exchange the messages required to carry out a particular task. The user interfaces do vary from system to system and user to user. In this paper we have identified the different issues in designing efficient user interface. All these issues are discussed at length with suitable example.

Computer-based Information Systems (CBIS) is the term used to describe any application that exhibits functional characteristics and aims to provide support in an organizational environment. It is essentially an information system that uses computer technology, a type of technology that supplements, extend, or replace human, manual operations or devices. It is a system that uses information in order to perform, control and coordinate the whole processes that perform its functions and achieve its goals to maximize the effectiveness of the overall functions of these processes through its performance that will promulgate organizational success. The key to designing an effective CBIS and promulgate organizational success is to know what a CBIS does, how it works, and how you can use it to achieve good performance, thus, this paper will be done through considering the following questions: (1)  What is Computer-Based Information Systems (CBIS), (2)  What is CBIS Effectiveness, (3) What are the evaluation techniques or assessment models used to measure CBIS effectiveness,  and (4) What are the issues that will hinder an effective implementation of CBIS and how to handle them?

The purpose of this paper is to answer these questions through undergoing a comprehensive review about several assessment methods and models to measure IS effectiveness, as well as CBIS definitions and concepts that will help researchers especially system developers become familiar with appropriate assessment methods and models used to assess CBIS effectiveness to achieve IS implementation success.

The review will present various literatures and previous studies that will focus on the following topics: (1)  Defining Computer-based Information Systems (CBIS), (2) Defining CBIS effectiveness, (3) Designing an effective CBIS through the use of evaluation techniques and assessment models, and (4) Identifying Key Issues for CBIS Implementation Success and Key Factors to Handle Them.

Defining CBIS will include important terms relevant to its nature and concept like information systems and computer technology. Moreover, several terms are used in this study to describe the field of CBIS such as information systems, management information systems, data processing management, systems management, business computer systems, or just systems. However in this paper, computer-based information systems or CBIS will be used to describe all. In this topic, the goal and CBIS role was also comprehensively described.

Defining CBIS effectiveness on the other hand was done in this study to supply readers various definitions of effectiveness because frequently, CBIS are used without a full understanding of the term or its efficacy. Segvi Ozkan and Murat Cakir, Hamilton and Chervany, Carlson, and Cyrus are one of the few researchers who discuss and argue system effectiveness definition. Each of them defines and describes effectiveness in various ways but all of them connects to achieve one organizational goal at the end - the success effect of IS on organizational performance.

The findings from the past researches show proofs and evidences that a comprehensive understanding on the concept and theories of CBIS and its effectiveness will be a great help in the design and development of an effective computing facilities and applications that aims to provide support in an organizational environment. Moreover, the consolidated references in this paper about considerations related to IS implementation success such as important factors that will hinder IS implementation to become successful and the proper selection of appropriate methods and models for assessment will supplement readers and system developers with enough information about CBIS issues and become familiar with various assessment methods and models to achieve effective design and development of CBIS and its success in implementation.
