Tristan and Isolde

Este ensayo interroga la contenciosa clasificación de la inteligencia artificial (IA) generativa como una "máquina de plagio". Se argumenta que, si bien el término es técnicamente impreciso en un sentido legal tradicional, diagnostica con acierto una condición procesal y ética fundamental: el funcionamiento de estos modelos se basa en la derivación y remezcla estadística a gran escala de obras preexistentes, a menudo sin el consentimiento de sus creadores. El análisis distingue críticamente entre la inspiración humana, mediada por la experiencia subjetiva, y la derivación matemática de la IA, que opera sobre representaciones de segundo orden de la realidad. La discusión se amplía para examinar las implicaciones socio-ontológicas de esta tecnología, como la erosión de la confianza a través de los "deepfakes", antes de culminar en una prospección filosófica sobre la Inteligencia Artificial General (AGI). En esta última frontera, se postula que el debate trasciende la originalidad para centrarse en la naturaleza de la conciencia y si el sustrato material (carbono vs. silicio) constituye la distinción definitiva de la creatividad genuina.

Classical music in the late 19th and early 20th century saw a marked shift in styles, as composers gradually abandoned the tonal and formal structures that had governed Western music for centuries. This gradual transition from late-Romantic chromaticism to atonality was facilitated by the theoretical innovations of composers like Wagner and Mahler, whose increasingly dissonant harmonies moved away from straightforward tonic-dominant relationships. They did so by focusing more and more on the specific chords and motifs used in a composition, rather than how these elements linked together within a tonal framework. Wagner’s Tristan chord from Tristan und Isolde serves as a key example of this shift. The theoretical leap from Wagner's extreme chromaticism, which stretched but ultimately preserved tonality, to Schönberg's atonality can also be explained by this pursuit for specificity insofar as Schöenberg explained his concept of Klangfarbenmelodie (tone-color melody).
The formal and structural differences between Romantic works and early atonal pieces also marked a narrowing in compositional techniques. For instance, Schönberg’s Five Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 16 exemplifies this fragmentation, where isolated gestures and abrupt shifts replace thematic development. This focus on fragmenting ideas instead of developing them created music that was more intense and concentrated, contrasting with the expansive, elaborate works of the Romantic era.
The critical and public reception to atonality reflected a more general sense of cultural unease regarding the breakdown of established standards in classical music. Audiences not only lost the familiar harmonic structures, such as the expected resolution of dissonances, but also the formal coherence they had come to expect. Atonal music felt disjointed and unsettling by comparison. It is no wonder, then, why audiences reacted with boos, catcalls, and even punches, to pieces like Berg’s Altenberg Lieder— the nuances of the gradual shift toward fragmentation and atonality was lost when these new works suddenly came to the forefront of the classical music world. The stark contrast between the unity of Romantic works and the division of atonal pieces mirrored the more general societal fears of cultural disintegration.
By continuously narrowing the scope of their harmonies and forms, late-Romantic and early atonal composers pushed the limits of tonal harmony to a breaking point, creating dissonances and fragmented structures that shocked traditional audiences and set the stage for critical and public uproar.

Noi sappiamo che quando Roma, pressata da tutti i lati dagli eserciti barbarici, ritirò i propri legionari dalla Britannia nel 410 d.C, questa terra divenne in poco tempo una 1 regione senza legge. Le Lowlands britanniche si trovarono così soggette ad attacchi degli Irlandesi a ovest, dei Pitti a nord, e di varie tribù germaniche -quelle che noi chiamiamo Sassoni -a est e a sud. Nel giro di una generazione, tutto ciò che rimaneva della società in Britannia si era completamente disgregato. Ci furono massacri, carestie, pestilenze. Coloro che si erano rifatti al modo di vivere dei Romani civilizzati trovarono difficoltà a sopravvivere a quella buriana, ma alla fine reagirono con vigore. Cercarono un capo tra le loro tribù, e la prima figura ad emergere fu colui che le cronache chiamano Vortigern. Un nome che in realtà è un titolo e significa "Sommo Re". è probabile che il suo vero nome (o almeno romanizzato) fosse Vitalinus e che il suo palazzo reale si trovasse a Gloucester. Vitalinus cercò di riportare un certo ordine in Britannia e organizzò le tribù locali, ma il potere gli andò alla testa e molti finirono per considerarlo un despota. Un capotribù rivale, Ambrosius Aurelianus, lo sfidò. Tutto questo avveniva intorno al 430/440 d.C., una generazione o due prima di Artù. Nei secoli seguenti però si instaurò per così dire una compressione temporale, e la storia che segue -in cui compaiono Vortigern, Ambrosius, Merlino da Giovane, Uther Pendragon -si svolge negli anni appena antecedenti la nascita di Artù. Dell'infanzia del vero Artù non sappiamo nulla. Chiunque fosse, quasi certamente apparteneva a una delle famiglie reali della Britannia del V o VI secolo, anche se non divenne mai re per diritto di successione. Le scarse cronache rimasteci di quei lontani giorni lo definiscono Dux Bellorum o Duce di guerre, in altre parole, un condottiero militare.

A la Renaissance est apparue l’idée saugrenue que l’humain n’avait pas d’essence propre et que, libre, il se créerait lui-même dans l’Histoire. Déjà présente chez Pic de la Mirandole, cette idée se retrouvera chez tous les philosophes postérieurs jusque à Sartre (« l’existence précède l’essence »), en passant par Hegel, Nietzsche, etc… En fait, cette idée est l’idée majeure de la modernité qui sous-tend le relativisme, l’importance accordée à la sociologie ainsi que la récente théorie du « genre ». Jusqu'à cette époque de la Renaissance, l’idée de « l’humain, cause de soi » n’avait jamais été émise parce qu'aucune créature vivant dans le monde sublunaire ne pouvait être cause de soi et que seule la divinité incréée et éternelle pouvait être la « cause première » créatrice. De son côté, la théologie chrétienne augustinienne traitait l’Histoire comme une théophanie et concevait un sens de l’Histoire sous le doigt de Dieu, à l’opposé des religions anciennes pour qui le Temps était toujours une chute nécessitant une guérison et une réintégration dans le sacré atemporel (l'éternel retour). Faire de l’humain, le créateur de lui-même dans l’Histoire et refuser le doigt de Dieu , c’est, en philosophie de l’Histoire, se passer de toute transcendance et s’apercevoir que « Dieu est mort » (Nietzsche). Néanmoins, à coté de cette conception athée, s’est développé tout un courant philosophique en continuité avec la théologie naturelle des penseurs scolastiques dont faisait partie Raymond Lulle qui, influencés par les philosophes hellénisants musulmans (Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi, Avicenne, etc..) ayant synthétisés Platon et Aristote, appliquaient le « deviens ce que tu es » aristotélicien, repris par les alchimistes, au domaine spirituel intérieur. Maître Eckhart aussi exemplifiait le processus mystique par des formules alchimiques. De lui à CG Jung en passant par Paracelse, Schwenckfeld, Weigel, Boehme, etc.. une autre conception souterraine, non opposée au « doigt de Dieu », proposait une vision de la transformation de l’humain selon un processus intérieur symbolisé par les représentations alchimiques que le psychanalyste suisse a dénommé le processus d’individuation.

1 . « Auriez-vous l'obligeance de m'accorder votre attention ? » ; « Pourriez-vous m'écouter, s'il vous plait ? », « voudriez-vous bien prêter une oreille attentive à mes propos ? » Bien d'autres formulations seraient possibles pour introduire une réflexion sur la requête, forme particulière des actes de langage directifs. Cette communication a pour but d'apporter une réflexion sur les réalisations possibles de cet acte dans les textes littéraires qui constituent la majeure partie des témoins de l'ancien français. Après une partie introductive dans laquelle je définirai le cadre théorique de cette étude, une deuxième partie traitera des principales réalisations linguistiques de cet acte de langage dans un contexte dyadique. Enfin, une troisième partie montrera les stratégies discursives possibles dans un cadre participatif à plusieurs locuteurs. La requête est une des réalisations possibles des actes de langage directifs : c'est-à-dire que le locuteur qui la formule a pour visée de faire réaliser dans l'immédiat une action par son interlocuteur. Le but illocutoire de ces verbes consiste dans le fait qu'ils constituent des tentatives […] de la part du locuteur de faire faire quelque chose par l'auditeur. Il peut s'agir de tentatives très modestes, comme vous inviter à le faire ou vous suggérer de le faire, ou bien de tentatives très ardentes comme insister pour que vous le fassiez. (Searle 1982 :53) Le contenu propositionnel de ces actes directifs n'est pas de l'ordre du vrai ou du faux. Leurs valeurs de vérité dépendent entièrement de la réalisation future de l'action par l'interlocuteur. Cependant, nous ne désirons pas donner ce nom de requête à l'ensemble des actes de langage directifs. Elle est voisine d'autres actes de langage directifs, comme l'ordre, l'injonction, la sommation mais aussi de la suggestion ou du conseil, voire de l'offre. Parmi tous ces actes possibles, nous ne qualifierons de requête que ceux qui sont formulés par un inférieur qui se présente aussi comme le bénéficiaire de l'action devant être accomplie. Bien que moins ardente, elle est fondamentalement une agression de la face de son interlocuteur : elle menace la face négative de celui auquel elle s'adresse, ce que Goffman appelle « le territoire du moi », et ce d'autant plus que cette agression vient d'un locuteur dont le statut social est inférieur et dont la demande n'est pas légitimée par le rapport de force. Le fait même de formuler une requête, plus encore que la requête elle-même est donc une première agression. D'autre part, cependant, la requête menace aussi la face positive de celui qui la formule, son narcissisme, dans la mesure où il doit admettre son manque, son infériorité. Sa formulation va par conséquent impliquer des stratégies discursives particulières pour ménager les faces des participants en jeu. En relation hiérarchique, le principe de déférence exige que les actes potentiellement menaçants soient accompagnés d'un « emballage rituel » beaucoup plus important lorsqu'ils émanent de l'inférieur que du supérieur. (Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 2008 : 106) Pour analyser les règles de politesse, nous reprendrons le modèle de Brown et Levinson en suivant les aménagements que propose Catherine Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1992 : 171). Quel est l'intérêt d'une telle recherche dans des textes littéraires anciens ? Selon Charaudeau (1992), ces énoncés directifs expriment l'instauration d'un certain type de relation interpersonnelle dont ils sont l'actualisation linguistique. Il est légitime de considérer la littérature comme une représentation, artistique et stylisée, des relations interpersonnelles dont elle explore les différentes facettes. La crédibilité interne des romans que nous prenons comme objet d'analyse repose sur un certain degré de mimétisme des actes de langage ordinaires. À ce titre la comparaison avec les manières de langage est pertinente. En effet, ces manuels de conversation

Comme nous, les hommes du Moyen Âge ont perçu la voix comme révélatrice de la personnalité de l'individu. Dans le but de classer de manière exhaustive de tous les indices physiognomoniques, le Secret des Secrets détaille : Qui a la voix grosse et sonnant, il est grant parleur et aime les batailles, et qui a la voix moienne, ne trop grosse ne trop gresle, il est sage et raisonnable, et celui qui parle tost et a la voix gresle, il se courrouce hastivement et est de mauvaise nature. Qui a la voix doulce et sonnant, il est envieux et courrouceux, et qui a belle voix, il est fol et de hault corage. Celui qui s'esmeut de legier et qui en parlant meut ses mains, est mauvaix grant parleur et decevant ; et celui qui parle sans ses mains mouvoir, est de parfait entendement, saige et preudomme 1 . Jusqu'au vertige, ce texte classe et décrit tous les traits de caractères qui se rapportent à tel ou tel indice physique. Le corps est une vaste carte à lire et à déchiffrer pour connaître autrui. La voix, comme le nez, comme les mains, comme les cheveux correspond à la personnalité : Gornemant juge « au parler » que Perceval est « nice et sot 2 ». Intonation, pauses, débit, prononciation, ton… comme le matériel nonverbal déjà analysé, ces éléments paraverbaux servent autant à la régulation de l'interaction et à son organisation qu'à la transmission des informations sur la nature, la psychologie des interlocuteurs et leurs relations. Cependant l'écrit, par essence, rend extrêmement délicate la restitution totale de ce qui est du domaine de la voix et de ses inflexions. Deux solutions s'offrent à l'écrivain pour prendre en compte ces phénomènes : la description ou l'imitation. Bei dem sogenannten Lügenmäre handelt es sich um den ersten bekannten Repräsentanten eines gemeinhin als ‹Lügendichtung› bezeichneten Genres im Überlieferungsverbund der kleinen Reimpaardichtung. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht die Textgestalt des Lügenmäre mit Blick auf seine sprachlich-rhetorische Faktur, erschließt seine Position als Unikat im Kontext der Sammelüberlieferung des Wiener Codex 2705 und eruiert Bezüge zum zeitgenössischen (lateinischen) Lügendiskurs.

Der Beitrag fokussiert die mediale Qualität ausgewählter deutschsprachiger Tristan-Dichtungen (Versepik, Prosaroman und Schauspiel) in ihrer Bedeutung für die Vergegenwärtigung des Erzählgegenstands sowie der Imagination narrativer Geschlossenheit. Zentral ist die Wechselwirkung von Klang und Bild, deren besondere Pointe in der Verbindung des Autorkonzepts mit der impliziten Stimmlichkeit der Tristan-Erzählung sowie der Emergenz einer Meister-Stimme liegt.

The article focuses on the medial quality of selected German-language Tristan poems (verse epic, prose novel and drama) in its significance for the visualisation of the narrative subject and the imagination of narrative closure. Central to this is the interaction of sound and image, the special point of which lies in the connection of the concept of the author with the implicit vocality of the Tristan narrative and the emergence of a master voice.

This is a review article on the latest book by the eminent historian Miltiades Hatzopoulos (of the Academy of Athens), regarding the origins of modern vernacular poetry in Byzantium and Western Europe. The author concentrates on the three main genres which dominated the poetic landscape, in Demotic Greek and in the Latinate vernaculars, during the High Middle Ages: epic, lyric poetry, and romance.

In the field of epic poetry, the Byzantine songs about the "Akritai" warriors (the defenders of the frontiers of the empire) are read in parallel with the western chansons de geste, such as the "Chanson de Roland" and the "Cantar de mio Cid". Lyric finds its most sublime expression in the songs of the troubadours and trouvères, although the vernacular literature of Byzantium admittedly has nothing comparable to offer. Verse romance flourished in the West, beginning with the poetic narratives of Tristan and Isolde and the works of Chrétien de Troyes. The western tradition influenced a series of Byzantine authors, who produced elaborate versified romances of love and adventure in the Palaeologan period.

Thus, the author constructs a panorama of the poetic production of the medieval world, all along the European continent. A spiritual and literary bridge connects the two great European empires of the time, from Normandy to Cappadocia, from the coast of the Atlantic to the shores of the Euphrates. In this perspective, Byzantium no longer appears as an isolated entity, outside the mainstream history of Europe and unrelated to the formation of western cultural identity. Quite the opposite: Byzantium becomes part of the ample European family, takes its place within the rich heritage of western civilisation, and contributes to the western intellectual treasury as an equal.

As the author notes, this was the "other Hellenism", the one that retained contact with the intellectual accomplishments of the West without losing its peculiar cultural identity. This Hellenism exploited the gifts of European spirit as a source of genuine and original creativity, neither imitating them slavishly nor rejecting them with narrow-minded fanaticism. The reader is left to wonder whether we, the Greeks of the present day, are worthy of that other Hellenism. Whether or not we have learned something from the hard intervening centuries; and whether we will prove wiser the next time that we may be forced to choose between the Latin cucullus and the oriental turban.

We consider two examples from prose in which a coiled name contains a plot or motif. These examples are not entirely conventional. In Balzac's novella “Colonel Chabert”, an anagram links a character's name to a crucial element of the plot. Moreover, the imprecision of this anagram is itself a source of meaning, reproducing the property of de-identification embodied in the plot. In Cortázar's story “The Sunset Hour of Mantequilla”, a character turns out to be a double of the true bearer of the name, and the motif of duality is embodied anagrammatically in the names of two characters at once.
Also, the corresponding name coincides with the name of the murder weapon.

Esta coletânea apresenta alguns estudos que foram desenvolvidos no Brasil sobre a Idade Média insular, com particular enfoque na Matéria da Bretanha, o conjunto de textos que forma o que hoje conhecemos como mundo arturiano. Ainda que nem todos os textos abordem diretamente o lendário monarca, a opção pela alcunha "Estudos Arturianos" se mostra valiosa na presente empreitada. Por um lado, pois o universo de Arthur é amplo e comporta uma variedade gigantesca de temas, narrativas, personagens e acontecimentos que, não raramente, se "desgarram" em tradições independentes. O que faz do termo "arturiano" um guarda-chuva pertinente para esse tipo de abordagem. Por outro, pois foi o gosto em comum pela literatura medieval concernente a este monarca que deu coesão ao grupo responsável pela obra. O Arturus Insularum, originado da experiência proporcionada pelo Insulae (Grupo de Estudos sobre Britânia, Irlanda e Ilhas do Arquipélago Norte, na Antiguidade e no Medievo), mas também de vários outros grupos, núcleos e laboratórios de nosso país, nasceu deste interesse em comum. Da intenção de contribuir com a popularização desses estudos e, em dada medida, encorajar jovens medievalistas a se aventurarem numa temática que, ainda hoje, é geradora de encanto e fascínio. A(O)s autora(e)s que participam desta coletânea se encontram em vários estágios da caminhada acadêmica, com perfis profissionais e viéses teórico-metodológicos que diversificam os trabalhos aqui apresentados. Além de uma obra de divulgação científica, Estudos Arturianos presta uma singela homenagem a um nicho particular da nossa medievalística, a(o)s profissionais que têm realizado esforços para consolidar os estudos da Idade Média Insular em nosso cenário acadêmico tupiniquim.

RIASSUNTO: Il legame tra isolamento e solitudine ha rappresentato terreno fertile per le arti letterarie, ora alimentando la produzione creativa, ora diventando tema centrale di narrazioni e composizioni poetiche. A tale riguardo, la storia d’amore tra Tristano e Isotta, emblema di un sentimento amoroso in conflitto con gli obblighi sociali e politici della società medievale, trae linfa dalla necessità/dovere dell’isolamento e il confronto con la solitudine ad esso associato. Tale dinamica è principalmente esemplificata dalla scena della Salle aux Images, del ramo courtoise della vicenda, che mette in luce la crisi che vive il cavaliere, costretto ad allontanarsi dalla Cornovaglia per preservare l’onore suo e della sua regina. Il senso di solitudine si presenta qui in tutta la sua ambiguità, ovvero, da un lato, come crisi dell’Io nell’assenza della sua amie, ma, dall’altro, come occasione di creazione di un doppio artistico dell’amata, suo fantasma e ombra, con cui mantenerne vivo il sentimento.

ABSTRACT: The connection between isolation and solitude represents fertile ground for the literary arts, sometimes inspiring creative productions, sometimes becoming a central theme in narratives and poetic compositions. In this context, the love story between Tristan and Isolde, a symbol of a romantic sentiment in conflict with medieaval society’s social and political obligations, draws inspiration from the necessity/duty of isolation and the confrontation with the related solitude. This dynamic is primarily exemplified by the scene of the Salle aux Images, within the story’s courtoise branch, which highlights the crisis faced by the knight, compelled to leave Cornwall in order to preserve his and his queen’s honor. The solitude manifests here in all its ambiguity, namely, on one hand, as a crisis of the self for his amie’s absence, but on the other hand, as an opportunity to create an artistic double of his beloved one, that is, a phantom or shadow through which to keep his love alive.

Este artigo propõe-se a apresentar um panorama sobre a difusão e as ressonâncias da lenda tristaniana no contexto angevino dos séculos XII e XIII ocidentais. O presente texto formou-se a partir de uma aula ministrada no minicurso "Arthur à prova do tempo: o ciclo arturiano entre passado e presente", na Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas (USP), em 2021.

Аннотация: Статья посвящена исследованию черт кельтского женского архетипического образа в легенде о Тристане и Изольде. В основу исследования легли Tóraigheacht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne (Преследование Диармайда и Граньи) из фенийского цикла, Scéla Cano meic Gartnáin (Истории о Кано, сыне Гартнана) из Цикла королей и Clann Uisnigh (Дети Уснеха) из ольстерского цикла — три мифологические саги, считающиеся кельтскими предшественниками легенды. В истории о влюбленных сохраняются мотивы древних ирландских сказаний: любовный треугольник между королем, его вассалом и женщиной, преподнесение напитка и другие. Образ Изольды обнаруживает функциональное сходство с образами трех мифологических героинь: Граньей, Кред и Дейдрой. В нем находят свое отражение древнейшие концепции кельтской культуры, связанные с осмыслением власти, верности, любви и смерти.

Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of the features of the Celtic female archetypal image in the legend of Tristan and Iseult. The study is based on Tóraigheacht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne (The Pursuit of Diarmuid
(Diarmaid) and Gráinne) of the Fenian cycle, Scéla Cano meic Gartnáin (Stories of Cano, Son of Gartnán) of the Cycles of the Kings, and Clann Uisnigh (The Children of Uisnigh) of the Ulster cycle — three mythological sagas commonly agreed to be the Celtic antecedents of the legend. In the lover’s story, the motifs of ancient Irish tales are preserved: a love triangle between the king, his vassal, and a woman, the presentation of a drink, and others. The image of Iseult reveals functional similarities with the three heroines of the mentioned myths: Gráinne, Créd, and Deirdre. It reflects the ancient concepts of Celtic culture associated with the ideas of power, fidelity, love, and death.

Esta coletânea apresenta alguns estudos que foram desenvolvidos no Brasil sobre a Idade Média insular, com particular enfoque na Matéria da Bretanha, o conjunto de textos que forma o que hoje conhecemos como mundo arturiano. Ainda que nem todos os textos abordem diretamente o lendário monarca, a opção pela alcunha "Estudos Arturianos" se mostra valiosa na presente empreitada. Por um lado, pois o universo de Arthur é amplo e comporta uma variedade gigantesca de temas, narrativas, personagens e acontecimentos que, não raramente, se "desgarram" em tradições independentes.

O que faz do termo "arturiano" um guarda-chuva pertinente para esse tipo de abordagem. Por outro, pois foi o gosto em comum pela literatura medieval concernente a este monarca que deu coesão ao grupo responsável pela obra. O Arturus Insularum, originado da experiência proporcionada pelo Insulae (Grupo de Estudos sobre Britânia, Irlanda e Ilhas do Arquipélago Norte, na Antiguidade e no Medievo), mas também de vários outros grupos, núcleos e laboratórios de nosso país, nasceu deste interesse em comum. Da intenção de contribuir com a popularização desses estudos e, em dada medida, encorajar jovens medievalistas a se aventurarem numa temática que, ainda hoje, é geradora de encanto e fascínio.

A(O)s autora(e)s que participam desta coletânea se encontram em vários estágios da caminhada acadêmica, com perfis profissionais e vieses teórico-metodológicos que diversificam os trabalhos aqui apresentados. Além de uma obra de divulgação científica, Estudos Arturianos presta uma singela homenagem a um nicho particular da nossa medievalística, a(o)s profissionais que têm realizado esforços para consolidar os estudos da Idade Média Insular em nosso cenário acadêmico tupiniquim.

Den Vorwurf, der meinen Übersetzungen aus dem Mittelhochdeutschen, der Nibelungen namentlich, gemacht worden ist, als hätten sie den Originalen Abbruch gethan, könnte ich mir schon gefallen laßen, denn sie müsten sie, wenn er begründet sein sollte, übertroffen haben. Leider vermag das keine Übersetzung, und so werde ich mich statt jenes schmeichelhaften Tadels mit dem bescheidenen Lobe begnügen müßen, Unzählige, und vielleicht den Ankläger selbst, den Originalen zugeführt zu haben. Daß dieß Übersetzungen, und zwar besonders solche thun, die Zeile für Zeile, gleichsam Wort für Wort übertragen, ist Goethes Ausspruch, auf den ich mich schon im Freidank S. XIII. berufen durfte. "Sie erregen," sagt der Altmeister, "eine unwiderstehliche Sehnsucht nach dem Original." Weil aber immer etwas hangen bleibt, will ich, die Anklage ganz aus dem Felde zu schlagen, diese Sehnsucht zu befriedigen helfen, indem ich das Original neben die Übersetzung stelle. Über den Schaden, welchen Übersetzungen anrichten könnten, (seht was ein storch den foeten schade, noch minre schaden hânt si mîn), habe ich mich in der Vorrede zur 1. Aufl. mit stärkern Worten ausgesprochen als ich es hier nach dem Spruche de mortuis nil nisi bene dürfte. Ich laße aber diese frühe Vorrede auch aus andern Gründen wieder abdrucken, muß indes bemerken, daß ich jetzt nicht mehr drei, sondern vier Hebungen im ersten Halbvers annehme. Ferner laß ich, weil darin zweier in der "Einleitung" mitgetheilter Gedichte und einer "Weihe" gedacht ist, auch diese folgen; ja vielleicht wird es mir nicht verdacht, wenn ich auch die Erwiederung Fouqués, an welchen jene "Weihe" gerichtet war, aus dem Gesellschafter, 1827 Nr. 85 (28. Mai) einrücke. Um das Auge nicht zu beleidigen, geb ich Urschrift und Übersetzung mit der gleichen Schrift, die mir, nachdem einige Zeichen hinzugekommen sind, auch für das Mittelhochdeutsche die geeignete scheint. Das Neuhochdeutsche anlangend, so hat Jacob Grimm, der sich in einem Briefe an F. Pfeiffer beschwert, daß er nicht einmal das ß, wo es organisch ist, durchzusetzen vermocht habe, dieß durch den Gebrauch der runden Schrift, die man ausschließlich lateinisch zu nennen pflegt, als ob die eckige nicht den gleichen Ursprung hätte, selber verwirkt, denn diese Schrift hat kein ß, und nicht Jeder ist in der Lage, sich eins schnitzen zu laßen, ja er selber war es nicht immer. Sie hat eigentlich auch kein k und verführte J. Grimm selbst zu der ungeheuerlichen Schreibung Cöln, was Zöln gesprochen werden müste, vergl. Cölibat, und also die Kölner, die sich ihrer bedienen, zu Zölnern und Sündern wider die deutsche Lautlehre macht. Für das Mittelhochdeutsche hat sie erst Beneke und in den Nibelungen Lachmann durchgesetzt; jedoch hat Lachmann die Prachtausgabe seiner Zwanzig Lieder mit eigens dazu gegoßenen wunderschönen eckigen s.g. deutschen Lettern drucken laßen. Ich selbst habe sowohl im Lesebuch als im Wartburgkrieg zu der s.g. lateinischen greifen müßen, weil es da der Mühe nicht lohnte, für die Umlaute des langen a und o sowie für das weichere z, das wir ß nennen und schreiben, eigene Zeichen (ae und oe und z) schnitzen und gießen zu laßen, wie das hier geschehen konnte. Die Nebeneinanderstellung von Text und Original nöthigte zu genauerm Anschluß an das Original, das aber erst redigiert werden muste, denn ich konnte keiner der drei Faßungen (Recensionen), in denen das Gedicht vorliegt, ausschließlich vertrauen: keine bewahrt allein das Echte, ja in keiner sind alle Strophen vereinigt, durch deren Verbindung Original und Übersetzung nun einige hundert Strophen mehr zählen als die Handschrift A, deren Text ich zwar zu Grunde legte, von dem ich aber unzählige Mal abgewichen bin, manchmal vielleicht ohne Noth, aber schwerlich je ohne Grund. Nur in gleichgültigen Fällen hab ich den Text vorgezogen, der sich am wohllautendsten übertragen ließ. So ist allerdings mein Text kein kritischer; aber er wird dem endgültig durch die Kritik herzustellenden in den meisten Fällen vorgearbeitet haben. Die bisherigen kritischen Ausgaben haben sich Einer der drei Faßungen des Textes, welche man mit A, B und C zu bezeichnen pflegt, näher angeschloßen: die von der Hagensche von 1826 hielt sich an B (St. Galler Handschrift), die Lachmannsche an A, die Holtzmannsche und Zarnckesche an C, und indem Jeder die seinige für die echte und alleinseligmachende erklärte, erwarben sie sich das große Verdienst, uns von jeder dieser drei Faßungen ein zuverläßiges und anschauliches Bild vor Augen gestellt, und so der Ermittelung des ursprünglichen allen dreien zu Grunde liegenden Textes Vorschub geleistet zu haben. Einen Anfang zu solcher Kritik hat Bartsch (Untersuchungen über das Nibelungenlied, 1865) gemacht; aber seine Ausgabe, die zu B zurückgekehrt ist, benutzt die gewonnenen Ergebnisse nur theilweise. Der Text des ersten Dichters, der die vorhandenen Lieder mit Hülfe des lateinischen Nibelungenliedes Konrad des Schreibers zu einem Ganzen verband, wird zwar schwerlich jemals hergestellt werden können, denn das Gedicht scheint seitdem mehrfache Überarbeitungen erfahren zu haben, theils um die Sprache zu verjüngen, theils um Versbau und Reim mit den Ansprüchen der neuern Zeit in Übereinstimmung zu bringen; offenbar sind auch große Theile des Gedichts aus der knappen Weise des Volkslieds, die sich z.B. in Lachmanns viertem Liede zeigt, von höfisch gebildeten Volkssängern in die reichere, glänzendere und gefühlvollere Darstellung, die wir an den Rüdigern betreffenden Abenteuern bewundern, umgebildet worden, wenn dieß nicht schon, wie Wackernagel (Sechs Bruchstücke 1866, S. 30 ff.) annimmt, an den Liedern selbst, vor ihrer Aufnahme in das Gedicht, geschehen war: wir müßen ihm aber so nahe zu kommen suchen als möglich. Es stuont ein vrouwe aleine Lesebuch 58, und den dem Kürnberg zugeschriebenen Liedern zurück. Weil aber in letztern zu dem Bilde des Falken auch noch die Nibelungenstrophe kommt, für die kein älteres Zeugniss vorhanden ist, gerieth man auf den abenteuerlichen Einfall, den Kürnberg nicht etwa bloß für den Verfaßer unseres Liedes von Kriemhildens Traum, nein des ganzen Nibelungenliedes, auszugeben! Was wißen wir denn von Kürnberg? Nichts als daß er eine Weise erfunden hat. Ich stuont mir nehtint spâte an einer zinne. Lesebuch 52. Es ist eine Frau, die hier spricht, wie auch in dem verwandten Liede bei Dietmar von Eist, dessen soeben gedacht wurde. Auf der Zinne ihrer Burg stehend, hörte sie von einem Ritter ein Lied singen in Kürnberges wise. Wise kann zweierlei bedeuten, das Versmaß oder die Melodie; wir wißen also nicht einmal ob dieser Kürnberg der Dichter oder der Componist der Weise war, in der sie singen hörte, denn schon im Ezzoliede, Lesebuch 40, war das Amt des Dichters und Componisten geschieden: Ezzo begunde scriben, Wille vant die wîse. Eine Weise war nach Kürnberg benannt, die Weise in der jene Frau singen hörte, aber nicht, wie man annimmt, die Weise des Liedes, in welcher sie uns dieß berichtet, also nicht die Nibelungenstrophe noch die sie begleitende Melodie. Sie hörte ein Lied singen in Kürnbergs Weise; wie diese Weise lautete oder wie sie beschaffen war, ob eine Gesangweise oder ein Versmaß gemeint sei, erfahren wir nicht. Dem Kürnberg gehörte nur die Weise des Liedes, welches die Frau vor ihrer Burg singen hörte; ihm die Nibelungenstrophe zuzuschreiben, haben wir also nicht den entferntesten Grund: wie soll er denn nun gar das Nibelungenlied verfaßt haben? Man sagt, die Pariser Handschrift der Minnesänger schreibe dem Kürnberg die in der Nibelungenstrophe gedichteten ältesten Lieder zu: mithin habe dieser die bei ihm zuerst auftretende Nibelungenstrophe erfunden. Aber die Pariser Handschrift ordnet bekanntlich die Lieder nach Verfaßern und diese Verfaßer wieder nach Ständen, indem sie mit Kaiser Heinrich beginnt, hierauf Könige, Herzoge, Markgrafen, Grafen, Ritter folgen läßt und Zuletzt mit bürgerlichen Meistern schließt. Für Volkslieder, die keinen oder doch keinen namhaften Verfaßer haben, fehlte ihr eine Rubrik. Solche waren aber die dem von Kürnberg, und ohne bekannten Verfaßer auch die dem Spervogel zugeschriebenen Lieder und Sprüche. Mit welchem Leichtsinn der Sammler der Pariser Liederhandschrift sich aus der Sache zog, sehen wir an den Sprüchen, die er dem Spervogel zuschreibt. Bekanntlich sind es zwei Weisen, in welchen die dem Spervogel zugewiesenen Sprüche gedichtet sind, eine größere und eine kleinere. In der größern, die voransteht, begegnet der Name Spervogel gleich in dem dritten Spruche: der Sammler, der um einen Namen verlegen war, griff ihn frisch heraus und setzte ihn über beide Spruchreihen, die jetzt Spervogel verfaßt zu haben schien, obgleich der dritte Spruch, in welchem er vorkam: swer suochet rât und volget des, der habe danc, alse min geselle Spervogel sanc ic. deutlich besagte, daß nicht der Verfaßer, sondern einer seiner Freunde diesen Namen führte. Hätte er weiter lesen wollen und wäre bis zum 7. Spruche der II. Reihe gelangt, in welchem sich Heriger als Verfaßer angiebt, so würde er wohl diesem, nicht dem Spervogel beide Spruchreihen zugeschrieben haben. Mich wundert, daß Haupt, der bei Kaiser Heinrichs Liedern auf das Zeugniss der Pariser Handschrift kein Gewicht legt und auch schon für zweifelhaft hält, ob die dem Kürnberg zugeschriebenen Lieder ihm gehören, bei Spervogel, wo der Leichtsinn des Sammlers am Tage liegt, seinem Zeugniss vertrauen mag. Vergl. MSF. S. 238. Daß dem Dichter in jenem 7. Spruch das Alter nicht, wie Haupt meint, wegen fremder Entkräftung, vielmehr der eigenen wegen zuwider ist, zeigt die folgende Strophe, wo er es beklagt, nicht zum Bau eines Hauses griffen zu haben, als ihm zuerst der Bart entsprang, denn darum müße er jetzt, im Alter, "mit arbeiten ringen". If a narrative lacks the key ingredients of a compelling tale, yet still manages to cast influence over the evolution of Western literature, the question is no longer: is the Romance of Tristran valuable? Its value is vindicated by our contemporary discussion of Béroul. The question becomes: what is the nature of Béroul’s enduring value despite its shoddy design? How can we make sense of its overwhelming 12th century popularity despite our contemporary bewilderment? A question of brow-raising intrigue to the undergraduates who instinctively recoil from Béroul.

Film Melancholia (2011) eignet sich besonders gut für eine Detailanalyse, da er sich durch einen extensiven Gebrauch der Orchestereinleitung von Richard Wagners Tristan und Isolde auszeichnet. Dabei stellt er eine enge und wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen Bild und Ton her. Dieses Kapitel analysiert die Eingangssequenz sowie die Verwendung der Tristan-Musik im weiteren Filmverlauf. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, wie die filmische Adaption der Musik neue musikalische, dramaturgische und narrative Bedeutungen schafft. Bei der Beleuchtung der Koordination zwischen musikalischer Struktur und bewegtem Bild integriere ich den musikwissenschaftlichen Formdiskurs, wodurch ich musiktheoretische und künstlerische Formdeutung in einen sich fruchtbar ergänzenden Dialog stelle. Den Abschluss bildet eine Reflexion des filmischen Umgangs mit der Tristan-Musik in Anbetracht des musiktheoretischen Konzepts des Leitmotivs, filmischer Genrekonventionen und musikalischer Rezeptionsgeschichte. Lars von Triers »beautiful movie about the end of the world« (2011) handelt von der Entwicklung der depressiven Justine (Kirsten Dunst) und ihrer Schwester Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) in Anbetracht eines ominösen Planeten, der sich der Erde nähert. Die Feier entpuppt sich daraufhin als Desaster: Die geschiedenen Brauteltern beschimpfen sich vor den Gästen, Justines Arbeitgeber Jack (Stellan Skarsgård) setzt sie am selben Abend mit der Forderung nach einem neuen Werbeslogan unter Druck, sie fällt in ihre Depression zurück und verlässt immer wieder die Hochzeitsgesellschaft. Am Ende der Feier hat Justine ihren Job gekündigt, mit einem jungen Kollegen geschlafen und wurde von ihrem Ehemann verlassen. La damigella di Isotta è contraddistinta da un erotismo e una sessualità complessi i quali si manifestano in maniera contraddittoria in relazione con il tema della morte e dell'onore medievale.

This contribution analyses the character of Brangania within the tristanian narrative, in its different medieval textual realisations, by focusing on a comparative approach. The Isolde’s servant is characterised by complex erotism and sexuality which manifest themselves in a contradictory manner in connection to the theme of death and medieval honour.

Béroul, a Norman or Breton poet of the 12 th Century AD, is said to be the primary author of Tristan (also known as Tristan et Yseut, Le Roman de Tristan et Yseut, or Le Roman de Tristan) c 1170 to 1190 (or after AD 1191). Written in a Norman dialect, this work exists in several fragments that constitute 3,000 verses of a single manuscript now in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. It contains what is perhaps the earliest and most basic version of the tragic Tristan and Isolde story. Although poorly written, sections of this poem are authored by different scribes. This is indeed the earliest representation of the so-called "common branch" of the legend (the "courtly branch" is represented by fragments from Thomas of Britain's poem). Eilhart von Oberge wrote a version of this story in German. Many of Béroul's episodes, that do not appear in Thomas' Tristrans, resurface in the Prose Tristan. The content of Béroul's poem differs from the modern concept of what a narrative poem should be. It has a disjointed plot and lacks a flow of cause and effect. Its characters are ill-defined. Nevertheless, Alan S Fedrick states this was commonplace of literature in Béroul's time.

The poet Thomas of Britain (Thomas de Bretagne), also known as Thomas d' Angleterre (Thomas of England), wrote his Old French poem Tristran(s) after AD 1155 (no later than 1175, some say by AD 1170). Mary Dominica Legge claims the poem had its writing between 1155 and 1160 (perhaps for Eleanor of Aquitaine). This work is also known as Le Roman de Tristran(s) et Ysolt/Yseut (The Romance of Tristan and Isolde). It used an Anglo-Norman dialect. Robert Wace of Jersey had completed Roman de Brut, which seems, according to Mary D Legge, to have inspired several motives and narrative elements in Thomas' text. Historia Regum Britanniae could have influenced both Wace and Thomas. Legge states that Tristran resembles Le Lai du Chèvrefueille (The Lay of the Honeysuckle) by Marie de France. Either author could have taken from the other or both from a third unknown source. When Chrétien de Troyes wrote Cligès, he made sardonic references to the love concept developed by Thomas, which suggested Tristran was well known by that time. Thomas' version was impressive, as documented by the many manuscripts and by Gottfried von Strassburg's comment in the prologue to his Tristan, where he approves of Thomas for creating the true account of the love affair between Tristan and Isolde. Brother Robert of Norway mirrored Thomas' Tristran in his Trist(r)ams Saga ok Ísöndar (Saga of Tristan and Isolde).

Environmental awareness has led to an increasing interest in natural burials, but relatives of the deceased often complain about the graves becoming invisible. This article approaches this conundrum by exploring the entanglement of bodies, soil, and trees as matter in this context, and it shows how literature contributes to the symbolic dimension of this relationship between death and ‘nature.’ Instead of understanding trees as a replacement for headstones, I argue that many literary examples propose the idea of becoming a tree, hence making the transformation from life to death more visible. Located within the field of literary and cultural plant studies and drawing on material ecocriticism, this article brings together literature from antiquity and the Middle Ages to the present with environmental burial methods that put the idea of becoming a tree into practice.

Poetik der Brautwerbung im König Rother I Einfache und komplexe Formen Meinem Beitrag, in dem ich die Poetik der Brautwerbung im König Rother untersuche, 1 möchte ich einige Überlegungen vorausschicken, die ich zwei älteren narratologischen Studien entnehme: den Einfachen Formen von André JOLLES (1930) 2 und der Morphologie des Märchens von Vladimir PROPP (1928) 3. Zum einen möchte ich ausgehend von JOLLES festhalten, dass sich das Narrativ der gefährlichen Brautwerbung sowohl in einfachen wie in komplexen Formen findet. Als einfache Form begegnet es im Märchen, nämlich im sogenannten Brautwerbungsmärchen. Als komplexe Form begegnet es in Brautwerbungsepen wie beispielsweise dem König Rother, in Heldenepen wie dem Nibelungenlied und in Romanen wie dem Tristan Gottfrieds von Straßburg. Urs App, author of The Birth of Orientalism (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2010) and The Cult of Emptiness (2012), historian of the Western discovery of Buddhism, tells the story of Richard Wagner's creative encounter with Buddhism and explains the composer's last words.
As a historian of ideas, the author has long been interested in historical plagiarism and literary fraud. Giorgio Tagliabue's extensive use without permission of App's book Richard Wagner and Buddhism (2011) in Wagner and nirvana (Rome: Albatros, 2022) is a textbook case for the study of plagiarism. To facilitate such study, the Italian translation of App's entire book is juxtaposed with Tagiabue's plagiarised version.

Urs App, autore di The Birth of Orientalism (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2010) e di The Cult of Emptiness (2012), storico della scoperta occidentale del buddismo, racconta la storia dell’incontro creativo di Richard Wagner con il buddismo e spiega le ultime parole del compositore.
Come storico delle idee, l’autore si è da tempo interessato ai plagi storici e alle frodi letterarie. L’uso estensivo senza autorizzazione del suo libro Richard Wagner and Buddhism (2011) da parte di Giorgio Tagliabue in Wagner e il nirvana  (Roma: Albatros, 2022) è un caso da manuale per lo studio del plagio. A questão da poção é um tema de absoluta centralidade em todas as versões da história de Tristão e Isolda e, embora muita tinta já tenha sido despendida em relação aos seus mais variados significados e implicações nas narrativas tristanianas, ainda é possível elucidar alguns de seus elementos mais característicos a partir de um viés comparativo e histórico-literário entre os diferentes contextos de produção, veiculação e “inspiração” desses textos. A presente comunicação objetiva apresentar e delinear os aspectos culturais, narrativos e históricos em relação à “magia do amor” e a poção bebida por Tristão e Isolda, à luz dos referenciais históricos e documentais dos efeitos colaterais e do dispositivo literário impeditivo encontrado nas fontes irlandesas (geis), de modo a enquadrar e demonstrar a presença de marcadores históricos e culturais irlandeses na composição das narrativas do Ciclo Tristaniano.

La historia de Tristán e Iseo, ese “bello cuento de amor y de muerte” como lo definió Joseph Bédier en su moderna recreación de la leyenda, fascinó al público medieval que no dejó de buscar respuestas a los interrogantes que planteaba el escándalo de esa pasión adúltera. ¿Cómo se conjugan los impulsos más íntimos de un individuo con sus deberes sociales y políticos? ¿Puede un amor sincero y leal excusar el adulterio y la traición? Desde el siglo XII y por toda Europa, distintos autores respondieron a los desafíos éticos implícitos en la historia de los amantes de Cornualles.
            En esa tradición se inscribe Sir Tristrem, poema en inglés medio de fines del siglo XIII, que cautivó a Sir Walter Scott, quien no solo lo editó en 1804 sino que también le creó un final, perdido en el único manuscrito en que el texto se conserva, imitando la lengua y la rima del poeta medieval.
          Esta edición bilingüe y anotada de Sir Tristrem, por primera vez traducido al castellano, preparada por docentes e investigadores de la UBA, incluye, además de un capítulo introductorio acerca de la leyenda y un minucioso estudio del texto en inglés medio, un apéndice con los versos finales en los que el creador de Ivanhoe contó los últimos desencuentros y la muerte de los amantes, y una bibliografía orientativa.

Throughout the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th, there was a rediscovery of the legend of Tristan and Iseo that included not only the academic sphere, with the production of important editions that became a point of reference for specialists, but also that managed to transcend the erudite sphere to reach a diffusion among the widest public. The objective of this article is to provide some data about the ways through which the tragic story of the Cornish lovers was received in Argentina, during the first half of the 20th century.

El objeto de la creación comporta dos aspectos dialécticos: el objeto creado y al sujeto creador. Ambos en una relación iluminada que los contiene con una cierta dosis de eternidad. Más allá del narcisismo característico y necesario para generar una pieza musical, un poema, una escultura, o un escrito, se requiere un complementario desprendimiento del sujeto en función de su obra. Creación y caída que abarcan el placer y el dolor en una suerte de hermandad gloriosa muchas veces obscurecida por el silencio y la humildad de algunos artistas o la aberración de un crítico envidioso que, en el mejor de los casos, aumenta nuestro interés por la obra rechazada. El artista quedaría aliviado del enorme peso de sus propias fantasías ahora hechas realidad./p> El sujeto creador necesitaría "despojarse" de esos objetos fantasmáticos internos que le imponen su condición de libertad y a los que a veces se somete alegremente. Al mismo tiempo, por medio del gesto creativo los objetos son los develadores de esa innata curiosidad que caracteriza a algunos hombres.

The objective of the current research is to introduce the narrative of the epic entitled The Romance of Tristan and Isolda, composed by Joseph Bédier, adapted to the dramatic format. The research involved a historical and bibliographic revision of the context of the narrative, including the period when the medieval poems reconstituted by the author, to compose the actual romance. With a theoretical background previously chosen, some of the basic forms of drama were selected, from where its potential to occupy the stage was investigated. Finally, a dramatic text was elaborated as a display of approximately one hour of duration. The new text presents the relationship as transgressors for their epoch.

This article reflects on artistic identity as a field in tension between a personal path and the negotiation of the artistic work before the industry. The medieval outlaw appears in historical, religious, and legal texts of late Medieval England and is imagined in fiction as well, specifically in the romance narratives of Geoffrey Chaucer and Thomas Malory. Outlawry was a legal state that could be imposed. Both Chaucer and Malory, especially the latter, found themselves outside the law at different points of their lives, an item to consider when examining the authors’ representation of knights acting outside the chivalric code. Both authors populate their romances with outlawry, illustrating the ethical, legal, and social assumptions of their own times. In Chaucer and Malory, knights can sometimes be outlaws, and when they are, they are often portrayed as running amok or going mad, leading them to a quest or to an act that must be completed before they can be reintroduced into society. Le Vin herbé (1941), by the Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890–1974) is an ‘Oratorio profano’ for 12 voices and chamber ensemble, which contrasts markedly with Wagner’s iconic musical treatment of the Tristan legend, Tristan und Isolde (1859). Whereas Wagner wrote his own libretto, drawing largely on the version by Gottfried von Strassburg (died c.1210), and infused by his enthusiastic reading of Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860), Martin’s work sets selected passages from the Roman
de Tristan et Iseut (1900) by the French medievalist Joseph Bédier (1864–1938), drawing on earlier sources.

An examination of relevant literature deepens understanding of the intricate relationships between these two texts and their historical forerunners, and serves to digest the philosophical and psychological models that have proved especially illuminating for appreciation of Wagner’s work. This is complemented by a narratological examination of Le Vin herbé, highlighting ways in which Martin’s libretto invites an alternative understanding of Tristan’s psyche. In particular, the
relevance of Jungian concepts, such as the collective unconscious, archetypes and individuation, are explored.

How do scholars deliberate over musical form? This article utilizes Richard Wagner’s Tristan Pre-lude as a case study to pursue this line of inquiry. As an analysis of analysis, this text begins by addressing formal analytical discourse. Building on these findings, an original interpretation of form with the conceptual figure of the spiral is proposed. Finally, this figure of thought is linked to the (pop-)cultural reception of Wagner’s Tristan.

Auf welche Weise wird über musikalische Form nachgedacht? Am Beispiel von Richard Wagners Tristan-Vorspiel widmet sich der Beitrag dieser Frage. Im Sinne einer Analyse der Analyse befasst sich der Text zunächst mit dem formanalytischen Diskurs. Darauf aufbauend wird mit der Denkfigur der Spirale eine eigene Formdeutung zur Diskussion gestellt. Letztlich wird diese mit der (pop-) kulturellen Rezeption von Wagners Tristan verknüpft.
