This paper introduces an evolutionary approach to enhance the process of finding central nodes in mobile networks. This can provide essential information and important applications in mobile and social networks. This evolutionary approach considers the dynamics of the network and it takes into consideration the central nodes from previous time slots. We study also the applicability of maximal cliques algorithms in mobile social networks and how it can be used to find the central nodes based on the discovered maximal cliques. The experimental results are promising and show a significant enhancement in finding the central nodes.

This article examines the scientific legacy of the first Glasgow Botanic Gardens and the part they played in the global circulation of botanical knowledge, from their creation in 1817 to their relocation to the West End of Glasgow in 1841. Located in a thriving industrial city with strong commercial ties to the British Caribbean, the gardens stood at an important crossroads of political and economic interests, scientific discovery, cultural innovation and imperial motives. They were managed by the talented English botanist William Jackson Hooker, who strove to transform them into a training ground for prospective botanists and a leading scientific institution. Yet, like many other botanical establishments of similar stature at the time, the gardens encountered many financial setbacks that hampered their success and threatened the scientific ambitions of Hooker and his peers. This article discusses the extent of the gardens' scientific contribution within and beyond the borders of Britain and seeks to determine the degree to which science in these gardens was constrained by economic factors.

¿El turismo es un gran invento? is intended to critically analyse this image and to show that the tourism boom in Franco’s Spain did not bring about only economic changes but also political, cultural, and even ecological challenges. Hence, the authors in this volume attempt to provide additional nuance to the quite extensive existing literature on tourism in Spain, which has mostly focused on the economic aspects of international tourism. They try to reveal the cultural and political effects that unfolded with the development of tourism. Furthermore, in this volume, the authors aim to examine how tourism became a transnational phenomenon that goes beyond national symbols ‘incorporating actors, ideas and trends’ (p.3) that are unrestricted by physical borders. To this end, the chapters in this volume use new primary sources, especially literature and visual materials, but they also shift the focus from the state to various actors ranging from writers to environmental activists.

In the late twelfth century, four Chinese stonemasons migrated to Japan from the Chinese coastal city of Ningbo. They participated in the most important contemporary building project in Japan-the reconstruction of the prestigious Tōdaiji monastery in Nara following the Genpei War. Drawing on Chinese and Japanese textual records, archaeological evidence from the quarry sites, and the existing stone works, this study investigates the network that facilitated the movement of the artisans and their materials between China and Japan and sheds light on the relationship between artisans and religious monuments from a transnational perspective. This study explores how the migrant artisans' expertise and connections enabled them to establish roots in a new society. Additionally, it examines the timing of the artisans' migration within the broader context of Japan's societal transformations, aiming to highlight the connectivity fostered by maritime networks in premodern East Asia.

Dans le cadre de la la journée d'étude "Attractivités et réseaux de mobilité", les doctorants, post-doctorants et chercheurs sont invités à explorer les dynamiques d'attractivité dans les mobilités individuelles et collectives, de l'Âge du Bronze à l'époque moderne. L'événement s'intéresse aux dispositifs (juridiques, politiques, sociaux) mis en place pour attirer, accueillir et intégrer les individus dans des réseaux. Il examine aussi la circulation formelle et informelle d'informations, ainsi que le processus de regroupement communautaire. Une attention particulière sera portée aux réussites et aux échecs de ces mécanismes d'attractivité.

As part of the study day "Attractiveness and mobility networks", PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members are invited to examine the dynamics of attractiveness of both individual and collective mobility from the Bronze Age to the modern era on the Mediterranean basin or Southwest Asia. The mechanisms (legal, political, social) used to attract, welcome and integrate individuals will be in the middle of the talks, as well as circulate information (formal or informal) and the creation of community groups. This study day will also examine failures in attractiveness strategies and settlement processes.

In this text we analyse the different movements (circulation) that took place between Brazil and the other territories of the Hispanic Monarchy during the first years of the seventeenth century. Although we cannot yet say exactly to what extent Philip II's claim on the Kingdom of Portugal was an accelerator of the exchange processes, or whether they continued at their own pace despite the pretended ‘universal’ government, what is certain is that within the framework of the union of Iberian crowns, planetary connections were set in motion that transformed the modern age in all aspects, fundamentally in the political, economic, religious and cultural spheres. In that ‘world in movement’ that unfolded under the power of the Habsburgs, there were ‘circulations’, sometimes of global dimensions, in all areas: transfer of military contingents, movement of bureaucrats to and from remote places, transport of goods, transoceanic economic transactions, transmission of ideas, transfers of artistic styles, population movements, the forced expansion of the Catholic faith, with its transfer of friars...

En 1744, en pleine guerre de Succession d’Autriche, Jean-Baptiste Louis Fournier, négociant en tabac, est envoyé en mission secrète en Angleterre par le marquis d’Argenson, secrétaire d’État aux Affaires Etrangères, afin de tenter de négocier une paix avec le gouvernement anglais. Sous couvert de son commerce, il transmet à la France toutes les informations qu’il peut rassembler sur le conflit en cours, tout en essayant de rencontrer les ministres britanniques. Mais ces derniers, particulièrement indécis, font languir l’envoyé français dans ses tentatives pacifistes. L’arrivée en Écosse du Prétendant Charles-Édouard Stuart, auparavant hébergé en France, sonne le glas de pourparlers déjà fortement compromis, à la fois par les soupçons qui pèsent sur Fournier et par les fréquentations de ce dernier. Alf Julius Naess ble født 24.03.1917. Om barneårene vet vi lite, ut over at han tidlig ble interessert i dyr og dyreliv. Han var en ivrig hobbyornitolog, og allerede som 17-åring førte han nitid journal over sine fugleobservasjoner på hjemtraktene rundt Trondheim. Lenge tenkte han på å studere zoologi, men det ble det ikke noe av. Far til Alf døde tidlig, og det var en onkel som sørget for å få ham gjennom et fornuftig utdannelsesløp. Først fikk han elektrikerutdannelse med hensikt å bli skipselektriker på hvalfangstskip (som var onkelens naeringsvei), men nedgangen i hvalfangsten gjorde at han fikk anledning til å gå på Trondhjems Handelsgymnas. Alf startet så en karriere som bokholder, deriblant i sju år for rørleggerfirmaet K. Lund i Trondheim. Samtidig som han jobbet der ble han på ny grepet av interes-sen for akvariehold, en hobby han hadde vaert innom allerede i barneårene og som var på sterk fremvekst i 30-årenes Norge.

Multiplexity occurs in entrepreneurial networks when flows interact within and across relationships. It defines how these networks function and evolve and cannot be examined by studying network structure or flows separately. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of multiplexity, related research has remained limited and lacks an integrated approach to simultaneously examine structure and flows, thus restricting our understanding of entrepreneurial networks. We propose an integrated approach for conducting inductive studies into multiplexity, involving an adaptation of the "business networks" conceptual model, the configuration theory perspective, and the Q-analysis method.

Se intenta reconstruir la peripecia vital de un militar catalán, caballero de San Juan, que sirvió con distinción en la guerra de Sucesión española (1701-1714), durante la cual alcanzó la graduación de teniente general con 34 años de edad. De acordo com a documentação paroquial, o batismo poderia servir para atingir objetivos que variavam de escravizado para escravizado e conforme os padrinhos escolhidos para os seus filhos. Este artigo discute as relações construídas ou intensificadas por escravos dessa freguesia, pertencente à província de Mato Grosso, Império do Brasil, mas em fronteira litigiosa, no período anterior à sua ocupação pelas tropas de Solano Lopez, durante a Guerra do Paraguai contra a Tríplice Aliança.

This article offers a revisionist interpretation of the early modern Republic of Letters by offering a contextual analysis of explicit mentions of the term by scholars across Europe in the period. The current historiography on the Republic of Letters tends to present it as the place of friendly, solidary and democratic cooperation across national and religious boundaries. This article argues, instead, that members of the Republic of Letters conceptualised it as a battlefield of permanent warfare. Early modern scholars often compared themselves to soldiers of a hierarchically organised
army or to fighters in a civil war. It is claimed that a militarised conceptualisation of the Republic of Letters offers the opportunity to re-engage with Reinhart Koselleck’s influential Kritik und Krise. Evidence is presented from fifteenth-century Italy to early nineteenth-century Hungary.

By the time the firm erected a purpose-built structure in New York in the second decade of the twentieth century, elite art dealers had recognized that the location and design of their premises could be carefully calibrated to achieve sales and distinction, two intertwined and interdependent goals. Such efforts were the culmination of a long trajectory, primarily over the course of the nineteenth century, whereby art merchants of the caliber and ambition of the Duveen Brothers, operating in metropolitan centers such as Paris, London, and New York, shed their artisanal origins as sellers of bric-a-brac and curiosities and positioned art as a luxury commodity worthy of significant investment. To do so meant adopting the trappings and locales of fashionable retail in combination with strategies for displaying works of art honed by art academies, artists' societies, and museums in order to sell an object and an experience. These dealers were also, in essence, trading their expertise, embodied not just in the catalogues and pedigrees that accompanied their wares, but also in the taste and discretion they exhibited in their choice of address and premises. [1] The Duveen Brothers' US venture was initiated by Henry J. Duveen (1854-1919), who arrived in the United States from Great Britain in the 1870s and began with what the New York Times described as "a small art shop in John Street, where he handled antique silverware, ivory carvings, rare porcelains, period furniture, and Oriental rugs." [2] As art historian Charlotte Vignon reveals, the premises, located in today's Financial District, were regarded as unpromising by his brother Joel Joseph Duveen (1843-1908), who later recounted, "But what a shock I got when I saw our business premises! They were in a bad neighbourhood, and the place was not much better than a storehouse." Moreover, he opined, "Our beautiful stock was badly placed and badly lit, and the windows were not good enough for an old clothes shop." To recompense took both time and money, and included relocating to Broadway and Ninteenth Street in the retail district known as "Ladies Mile," the fashionable shopping district at the time. Joel Duveen was finally pleased that "I had everything in a really good place with ample room to show things and proper lighting." [3] The stakes of geography and design of the shop were clearly high. In 1886, Henry Duveen moved the premises again to 262 Fifth Avenue, between Twenty-Eighth and Twenty-Ninth Streets, following the uptown move of upscale retail. [4] Then, in 1889, according to Vignon, he opened a second gallery at 2 West Twenty-Ninth Street in what was then a primarily residential district for the wealthy classes of New York. [5] In 1890, on the occasion of the reconciliation of the two brothers, who had worked separately in the preceding five years or so due to a disagreement, and the formal founding of the firm Duveen Brothers, the business moved to a new location at 302 Fifth Avenue in a brownstone

Biocultural collections document human-nature interactions through plant and animal-based artifacts, raw materials, herbarium voucher collections, and varied forms of documentation. They form a valuable resource for biocultural conservation, preserving and enhancing traditional knowledge, livelihoods, and the environment. They should be used through participatory methods that allow institutional researchers and local communities to share data on ethnobiological collections and artifacts, enabling new knowledge of plants and people from multiple perspectives. Methods are demonstrated through a case study of historic ethnobotanical specimens collected by Richard Spruce in the northwest Amazon.

The turn of the century has witnessed enormous developments in Information and Communications Technology. The progress involves not only equipment, but also the means of communication, i.e. the Internet. While in past decades the internauts were largely passive users, nowadays they have an opportunity to become co-developers of the content. The 'revolution' in ICT did not pass unnoticed by methodologists. Education, especially Foreign Language Teaching, has benefited greatly from the changes. Having gone through various stages of the development of methodological thought, from Grammar-Translation method, to Audiolingual method, to Communicative approach, modern methodology emphasises flexibility on the part of the teacher, rather than rigid adherence to one particular 'miracle' method (Harmer 2007). Thus, not only should the teacher adjust the course to the needs of the learners, but he should also encourage more autonomy on the part of the class, so that each student can take greater responsibility for the learning process. The Internet, whose inherent property is eclecticism, fits perfectly within this framework. Wikis, webquests, podcasting, interactive whiteboards, authoring tools and other features of ICT have been adapted to computerassisted language learning (CALL), making the course more appealing to students and giving them a chance to contribute to the global community by publishing the effects of their work in the Internet (Dudeney and Hockly 2007, Sharma and Barrett 2007). The fact that it is the young generation that is the most enthusiastic about new technology strengthens the learners' intrinsic motivation and should not be underrated. Sous le régime de Vichy, se mit en place un système de parrainage organisé autour de la figure du maréchal Pétain. Il acceptait de devenir le parrain d'un enfant à condition qu'il soit issu d'une fratrie d'au moins quinze frères et soeurs encore en vie. Environ 1 800 enfants devinrent ses filleuls et tout autant se virent refuser cet honneur pour non-respect du critère théorique. Pour Pétain, l'acte de parrainer était réfléchi et permettait de récompenser les familles nombreuses, dans le cadre d'une politique familiale mettant l'accent sur la natalité. Le parrainage apparaît également comme un moyen politique destiné à renforcer des liens diplomatiques entre États : le 1 er août 1691, Louis XIV parraina Aniaba, prince africain converti, trois siècles avant que Jacques Chirac, alors Premier ministre, ne parraine Yacine, la fille cadette d'Abdou Diouf, président du Sénégal de 1981 à 2000. Enfin le parrainage peut intervenir lors de célébrations nationales. À la suite de la prise de Minorque par la marine française en 1751, des couples furent dotés par la ville de La Rochelle et leurs enfants parrainés par la cité. Le fils de François Racine, maître taillandier, baptisé le 30 novembre 1752, fut ainsi nommé suivant la tradition avec les prénoms de son parrain, l'intendant de Blair, et de sa marraine, la ville : Louis La Rochelle. Ces quelques exemples, que l'on pourrait multiplier à l'envi, mettent ainsi en exergue l'utilisation politique que les pouvoirs en place eurent du parrainage à l'époque moderne et contemporaine, mais aussi la diversité des stratégies mises en oeuvre. Depuis la création en 2006 du réseau Patrinus, ses membres ont promu et développé des travaux sur les modèles de parrainage, les usages socio-relationnels de la parenté spirituelle et ses implications économiques dans les sociétés chrétiennes européennes et américaines, de la fin du Moyen Age au XX e siècle. À plusieurs reprises, ils ont pu montrer l'implication des pouvoirs aussi bien religieux que civils dans l'institution du parrainage. Monica Vasile l'a notée dans la Roumanie communiste quand les chefs des sections locales du Parti multipliaient les filleuls ; de même, Ofelia Rey Castelao et Rubén Castro Redondo ont rappelé qu'à Saint-Jacques de Compostelle au XIX e siècle, les archevêques mobilisaient prioritairement des membres des élites politiques conservatrices pour devenir parrains de confirmation lors de vastes célébrations destinées à contrecarrer les mouvements anticléricaux et socialistes. Pour faire suite à ces premières études, il a semblé important de mener une réflexion plus globale sur l'instrumentalisation politique du parrainage et d'accorder une attention plus soutenue à toutes les modalités de création et d'utilisation de ce lien par les pouvoirs, qu'ils soient municipaux ou curiaux, locaux ou nationaux, du XVI e au XXI e siècle. La rencontre scientifique internationale qui aura lieu à Paris le 13 juin 2024 est destinée à répondre collectivement à ce questionnement inédit. Se limitant au parrainage de baptême dans les Églises catholique, protestantes et orthodoxes et aux baptêmes civils plus contemporains, elle se propose d'accueillir des communications analysant la manière dont les représentants des pouvoirs religieux (évêques, curés, religieux) et ceux des pouvoirs civils (souverains et princes, officiers, fonctionnaires ou élus selon les périodes et les lieux) investissent dans les réseaux de parrainage (et de compérage) pour construire des clientèles, établir des liens d'amitié ou renforcer des relations diplomatiques, ou bien développent une politique de parrainage visant à légitimer leur autorité ou à répondre à des enjeux sociaux ou démographiques. L'accent sera mis sur la composition des réseaux, les stratégies déployées et leurs enjeux, leurs effets éventuels en termes de pouvoir pour le parent spirituel ou de bienfait pour les familles. Des propositions s'interrogeant sur la matérialité des parrainages à visée politique et la ritualité de leurs célébrations (espace et temporalité des cérémonies, spécificités liturgiques, procédures administratives, présence ou substitution des acteurs, circulations d'objets ou d'argents, etc.) seront bienvenues.

This text studies the correspondence between the circulatory flows of goods and the business networks established by the Merchants' Guild of Guadalajara. It shows how, in a time of corporate struggles caused by the opposition of the Merchants' Guild of Mexico City to its upstart rivals, these networks nevertheless kept their business among their members in spite of all antagonisms. This in turn configured spatial business networks that reorganized the markets of New Spain. With an analysis of tax records, we can see how ties were strengthened between small groups of merchants belonging to the merchants' guilds of Guadalajara, Veracruz and Mexico City, with other groups of merchants from the countryside supplying local consumption in Guadalajara. La necesidad de modernizar la Armada española se hizo evidente a partir
del siglo XVII. Naciones como Francia e Inglaterra habían acometido esta empresa con anterioridad y su superioridad en el mar resultaba al menos preo­cupante para un país como España que contaba con el mayor imperio colonial del momento. La tarea debía emprenderse por diferentes lados: aumentar la flota con buques construidos desde arsenales españoles, traer o formar a téc­nicos que dirigieran esta empresa y contar con una oficialidad formada según las nuevas corrientes científicas europeas.
Todo ello debía liberar a la Corona de la dependencia tradicional entre la marina real y la marina mercante.
El establecimiento de los tres principales arsenales en Cádiz, Cartagena y Ferrol, la contratación de técnicos y constructores ingleses, franceses y holan­deses y la creación en Cádiz de la primera compañía y academia de guardia­ marinas en 1717, fueron las principales manifestaciones de lo
anteriormente dicho.

Pocas figuras castrenses -aun habiendo tanta abundancia de ellas a lo largo del tumultuoso siglo XIX- tienen una hoja de servicios tan dilatada y merito­ria como la de los dos hermanos Van Halen y Sarti (don Juan y don Antonio), el primero de ellos mariscal de campo del Ejército español y
teniente general del Ejército belga, y el segundo, teniente general del Ejército español y conde de Peracamps, aunque ambos iniciaran su carrera de armas como marinos de guerra, sentando plaza de
guardiamarinas en los años 1803 y 1804 respectiva­mente. Son, por tanto, dos vidas ciertamente paralelas en hechos y actitudes, y tanto a uno como a otro les alcanzaron, por sus notables hechos de armas, las glorias de un transfuguismo (por otra parte propio del siglo XIX) que convertía a
marinos en militares de tierra y viceversa, en razón de determinados acontecimientos o circunstancias históricas.

【Abstract】Building from the understanding the power relations are very often the product of retroactive projections, this paper intends to underline how the forms of Athenian collective Memory that supported the city's control of the sanctuary of Apollo on Delos, were evidenced materially. Indeed material is essential for the communication of any notion of shared past amongst cultural groups. In the cases highlighted below, it becomes clear that as traditions relating to Athenian involvement in the very origins of religious life on the island, would have been made manifest in various statues/monuments and their cultic consumption. Working from the successful application of Peircean notions of index, icon and symbol in relation to material memory cultural by Jones (2007), I shall highlight how, and in what manner, these physical media would have constructed a conceptualized past for Delos for which Athenian control in the Classical era was but a natural continuation.

El estudio problematiza el comportamiento de brokers en un circuito de venta de tierras en el valle de Pichidegua, zona central de Chile, entre 1820 y 1845. Se analiza el accionar de estos actores ubicados en posiciones estratégicas de la red para conquistar esos espacios y obtener ventajas. Se abordaron 340 escrituras notariales de venta de tierras. Los nombres de los contratantes fueron procesados mediante el software UCINET para obtener una caracterización de la red, la identificación de los agujeros estructurales y dos medidas complementarias de centralidad provistas por el Análisis de Redes Sociales: intermediación y grado. Además se recurrió a tres catastros agrícolas levantados en la primera mitad del siglo XIX para aproximarse al perfil socioeconómico de los actores. Los resultados evidenciaron una correlación alta entre brokers y quienes registraron mayores lazos y capacidad de intermediación. Se concluye un comportamiento tipo de los brokers, registrados como agricultores de mediana rentabilidad, pactando con una alta cantidad sujetos, poco centrales y débilmente conectados a la estructura. This article problematizes the behavior of brokers in a circuit of land sales in the Pichidegua Valley, central zone of Chile, between 1820 and 1845. It analyzes the behavior of these actors located in strategic positions of the network to conquer those spaces and obtain advantages. 340 notarial documents of land sales were addressed. The names of the contractors were processed using the UCINET software to obtain a characterization of the network and the identification of the structural holes and two complementary measures of centrality provided by Social Networks Analysis: Betweenness and Degree. In addition, three agricultural cadastres of the first half of the nineteenth century were used to approach the socioeconomic profile of the actors. The results showed a high correlation between brokers and those who registered greater ties and intermediation capacity. We conclude a typical behavior of the brokers, registered as farmers of medium profitability, agreeing with a high number of subjects, little central and weakly connected to the structure.

A lo largo del siglo XVIII la Administración intentó justificar algunas de sus
reformas o innovaciones basándose en la racionalidad y el ahorro. Buena
muestra de ello son las salidas que se regularon para los oficiales mayores de las Secretarías de Estado y del Despacho con el Real Decreto de 31 de mayo de 1785. Con él se trataba de homogeneizar y racionalizar los destinos de los oficiales una vez terminaban su carrera dentro de la Secretaría del Despacho. La medida tendía a aprovechar la experiencia que podían haber acumulado durante el tiempo que sirvieron en su ministerio, destinándoles al desempeño de la secretaría del consejo u oficina más afín a la Secretaria del Despacho de que procedían.
Quizá para ahorrar, no fue dada la Administración a jubilar a sus empleados a lo largo del siglo XVIII (ni en toda la Edad Moderna). Algo parecido sucedía con los miembros del Ejército de la época y, en concreto, con los oficiales de la Armada, como vamos a poder comprobar.
