Roman furniture

As part of a project aimed at cataloguing all the material stored in the warehouses of the Archaeological Museum of Córdoba, this paper presents an analysis of all the material that formed part of the Roman furniture from Roman Córdoba. New pieces have been presented, with those already published mentioned in the bibliography.

Throughout history, individuals have been concerned about collective or self-protection, to secure private or public properties and the community through various actions. Violations of these protections, customs, and individual or collective needs, depending on society, culture and temporal context, could be classified as criminality. Protective measures taken by individuals against criminal activity and efforts to define the private space or ownership in antiquity can be discerned by analysing literary, iconographic and archaeological sources. In this study were analysed 33 artefacts associated with maintaining the privacy or security of properties and goods. In this category were included 11 keys, seven components of locking mechanisms, 13 components of storage furniture or doors and two shackles. The artefacts were found in La Tène contexts across Transylvania. The analysis of the artefacts can provide information about security practices adopted by the community or preferences for a particular type of object. Furthermore, it could provide insights about the interactions of indigenous population with other regions through various channels, including the mobility of craftsmen, individuals, or technologies, as well as through different political-economic mechanisms. Some examples can be the agreements between local chieftains and the Roman Empire, often involving exchanges of gifts or offering tributes and stipends.

This work presents a first approximation to the virtual reconstruction of a late Roman arca ferrata located at the archaeological site of Molino de Arriba (Buniel, Burgos). The poor state of preservation of the metallic remains of this object has led to an extensive discussion of its original appearance and dimensions. The reconstruction has been carried out using 3D modelling software with the aim of generating an explanatory vídeo for the Museum of Burgos about this unique object and, in the future, to integrate it into Virtual Reality interactive experiences

Mit der Abberufung des Germanicus von seinem Germanienkommando im Winter des Jahres 16 n. Chr. durch den Kaiser Tiberius, fand der fast dreißigjährige Versuch Roms, das Gebiet zwischen Rhein und Elbe nicht nur unter Kontrolle zu bekommen, sondern dauerhaft in das Imperium einzugliedern,  ein Ende.
Bei diesem Beitrag handelt es sich um einen erweiterten und aktualisierten Vortrag mit dem Titel "Haltern und Germanicus", den der Verf. am 5.11.2015 im Rahmen einer Vortragsreihe mit dem Titel "2 000 Jahre Germanicus" in Kassel gehalten hat.

This document presents the notes on an experimental reconstruction of the Mastermyr Viking Chest Lock.  The chest and the 200 tools it contains give us some of the best insights into medieval blacksmithing and woodworking. Like many other archaeological finds, it also gives us some fascinating mysteries to explore. A farmer found the one thousand-year-old Viking-era chest plowing a Swedish field in October 1936. In 1983, Greta Arwidsson and Gosta Berg described the find in their book: The Mastermyr Find: A Viking Age Tool Chest from Gotland.

The discovery, in the house I, XVI, 3 in, Pompeii, of an ivory blade (MANN inv. 11909 F) carrying a series of incisions brings up some questions. It has been interpreted by the archeologists as an instrument intended for such perspective designs as the Renaissance ones. This hypothesis is denied both by the observation of the geometrical characteristics of the incisions and by our knowledge of the spatial representation in Antiquity. Several solutions are proposed for the use of the object, the most relevant being to consider it as a kind of slide rule.

Le violon, instrument de musique à cordes frottées, présente un intérêt théorique et musical très particulier, en raison de la place considérable qu'il a occupée dans le développement de la musique européenne. Par la pureté de la forme, la simplicité du matériau et la beauté du son, le violon représente un sommet dans la facture d'instruments, et il fournit un exemple de réussite empirique remarquable au terme d'un processus de mise au point qui a exigé des siècles d'essais. Le propos de cet exposé est de relier l'art du luthier à la science du bois en montrant qu'il est possible de s'appuyer sur les propriétés objectives, mesurables du bois, pour obtenir à coup sûr les qualités acoustiques recherchées. Une telle démarche conduit inévitablement à remettre en question un certain nombre de légendes relatives aux « secrets » des anciens luthiers. Les instruments authentiques de Crémone du XVII ou XVlll e siècle en bon état sont rares aujourd ' hui. Lorsqu ' on les écoute, ou lorsqu'on en joue sans idées préconçues, il est impossible de les distinguer d'autres bons instruments anciens ou modernes. On rapporte que J .-B. Vuillaume a copié le Guarnesius de Paganini si fidèlement que Paganini lui-même ne pût reconnaître l'original. L'expérience en a été répétée souvent, avec d'autres instruments, à l'occasion de « concours de sonorité ' organisés depuis le début du siècle.

EN: In this article, 15 lion’s head mounts discovered in the province of Dacia, at Arcobadara/Ilișua, Buciumi, Colonia Dacica Sarmizegetusa, Feldioara, Gilău, Olteni, Porolissum/Moigrad, Tibiscum‑Jupa, and Vețel, will be discussed. According to discoveries from the Roman world, these objects were widely used as mounts, rivets, or washers for furniture, especially chests, and could have had an apotropaic role.

À travers les découvertes archéologiques et les textes de la fin du Moyen-Âge, il nous est possible d'établir un glossaire concernant les variétés et les essences d'arbres utilisées alors par les artisans. Des auteurs comme Pietro di Crescenci nous révèlent, dès le Xlll e siècle, des noms d'arbres et leurs utilisations par les métiers du bois. Bartholomeaus Anglicus et L .B. Alberti, publiés au XVe siècle, complètent de façon pratique les informations rapportées par les écrits de Jean de Garlande (fin Xll e siècle) et le recueil d'Étienne Boileau (vers 1260). Certains auteurs font référence aux écrivains anciens : Pline l'Ancien ou Pline le Jeune, Isidore de Séville pour nommer les arbres. Ils ne manquent pas de faire aussi des observations sur leurs utilisations par les artisans de leur temps. De la publication de Robert Stephani (XVI e siècle) aux découvertes des fouilles de Strasbourg, Paris, Beauvais, Saint-Denis (XII-XV e siècle) pour ne citer que celles-ci, des registres de décès (X111-XVe siècle), des comptes de péages (X111-XV e siècle), aux ordonnances des métiers (XIII-XVe siècle), plus de 60 essences ont été répertoriées. Des objets en bois remarquables issus D'un puits De la place D'assas à nîmes (GarD) Mots-clés. Nemausus, Volques Arécomiques, xylologie, forum, artisanat. Résumé. Réalisée en 2003, la fouille archéologique de la place d'Assas à Nîmes a permis de mettre au jour un vaste édifice hypostyle construit autour du changement d'ère puis remanié, mais malheureusement très arasé. La façon de l'interpréter reste donc incertaine, mais l'hypothèse selon laquelle il s'agirait d'un bâtiment public à vocation commerciale est plausible. L'édifice s'inscrit en tout cas au sein du forum de la ville, non loin et à l'ouest de la Maison Carrée. C'est dans ce contexte qu'a été mis au jour le puits PT3094, utilisé probablement de manière temporaire, puis rapidement comblé en 60-70 apr. J.-C. Conservés dans un milieu humide, ce sont quinze objets en bois, rares et remarquables qui ont été trouvés, tels que diverses boîtes, dont deux boîtes à miroir et deux boîtiers sigillaires, des fragments de tablettes à écrire, une charnière de meuble, trois fragments de fuseaux, un fond de corbeille en osier, etc. À partir de l'observation de ces mobiliers, les essences de bois utilisées ont été identifiées, tout comme les processus de fabrication à l'oeuvre, renseignés quant à eux par les copeaux et rebuts de taille ou de sciage. Des artisans travaillant le bois étaient donc sans doute établis au sein ou aux abords immédiats du forum.

The town of Pavlovo, located on the banks of the Oka River in the Nizhegorod Province of Russia, about 400 miles east of Moscow, was considered the center of locksmith art in the 18th century. Unlike the well-known steel city of Tula, where weapons and art objects were manufactured, Pavlovo not only worked with iron, but also, with brass. The brass was used for flat padlocks, which mainly hung on small boxes. The brass, in an alloy of copper and 30-50% zinc, was typical of Pavlovo production. The small locks made of brass had a simple spring locking mechanism. The close ties between the two cities of Tula and Pavlovo were promoted by Count Pyotr Borisovich Sheremetyev 1. From 1743 he was the owner of the plant in Pavlovo and an antique collector with his own art cabinet. For fifty years he supported the workers and had many of them trained in blacksmithing in the city of Tula. Their products were admired by travelers and bought and sold by merchants.

Door locking is the mechanism for access, control and security that relies on a veiled knowledge of mechanics. However, as a symbol of power, authority, wealth and stature, it can reveal many cultural, economic and social practices and habits. The subject of ancient classical technology of door locking progress mechanisms is full of interest, and has received considerable attention during the last two centuries including recent years. Resume. Une fouille de sauvetage dans un méandre fossile de la Saône, au sud de Chalon-sur-Saône, au lieu-dit Le Petit-Creusot, a permis de mettre au jour parmi un abondant mobilier-dont de nombreux textiles-une nasse et une corbeille datables du IIIe s. Les matériaux employés ont été identifiés : osier, mais aussi clématite et cornouiller pour la corbeille. Le bon état de la nasse, intégralement conservée à l'exception de la jointure du corps et du goulet, a permis d'en déterminer le mode de construction, confirmé par l'archéologie expérimentale. Ces données, jointes à l'apport des textes et de l'iconographie, permettent d'éclairer usage et conditions de production de ces pièces. Ces découvertes apportent une contribution capitale à notre connaissance de la vannerie en Gaule romaine, jusqu 'à maintenant pauvre en vestiges, et éclairent d'un jour nouveau le faciès de la rivière dans cette zone. Abstract. A rescue excavation on the bank of a fossil meander of the Saône river, south of Chalon-sur-Saône in the locality of Petit-Creusot, revealed a fish trap and a basket among a large amount of artifacts, including numerous textiles. The materials employed were identified as willow, plus clematis and dogwood for the basket. Thanks to the good state of preservation of the fish trap, with the exception of the junction of the body and neck, it has been possible to determine weaving processes which were confirmed through experimentation. These data, coupled with information from written sources and iconographie evidence, permit a better understanding of the utilization and conditions of production of these objects. These discoveries are a major contribution to our knowledge of basketry in Roman Gaul which until now left little trace, and provide new information concerning the river fades in this area. ARoman bronze anthropomorphic applique was found in 2019 during a metal detecting survey in the cadastral
territory of Vrbová Lhota, Nymburk District. The discovery was made at the settlement site which could be
preliminarily dated to the period C1–C2. The frontal part of the applique is shaped as a human bust, which
emerges from a stylized leaf chalice. The figure features a distinctive hairstyle – a bun/nodus above the forehead,
which is characteristic of the depiction of the god Cupid or the Egyptian god Harpocrates. A similar hairstyle
can also be found in depictions of children, more rarely, the „child’s bun“ also appears on the statuettes of
Lares. It is important to note that the sculpture is characterized by a rougher design, and the overall stylization
and schematization of the facial features dominates. The neck, arms and torso are simplified and lack anatomical
detail. This fact points to the production of the object in a provincial Roman workshop. Based on the stylistic
analysis, the appliqué can be dated to the second half of the 2nd century AD, or even to the beginning of the 3rd
century. A question remains as to the original function of this artifact. Exact analogs have not yet been found
in Central Europe. Due to the shape of the back of the applique, which is straight with an indistinct horizontal
step in the head area, we can consider a furniture fitting, for example, a larger chest. We cannot exclude the
possibility either that it was used as a fitting for a candelabrum or for a wagon

This workshop aims at investigating aspects that link the consumption of luxury material culture in Roman society with the procurement, manipulation, and transformation of ‘luxury’ materials in the Roman world from a comparative perspective. Within the broader theme of Roman luxuria and its definition in socio-economic terms, the objective is to analyse luxury in the form of various artistic productions starting from the raw materials composing them, first and foremost marmora. The papers will explore the diverse facets of luxury applied to material culture, use and display that contributed to the creation of spaces of public and private magnificence from the late Republican period to the second century AD. Marble and lithic artefacts will be compared with other ornamental luxury products: from precious metals to glass, through painted representations and ‘imitations’ as well as their reflection in ancient authors or epigraphic sources, to understand how these were used by different social classes.

Este workshop tiene como objetivo investigar aspectos que vinculan el consumo de la cultura material de lujo en la sociedad romana con la explotación, manipulación y transformación de materiales de lujo en el mundo romano desde una perspectiva comparada. Dentro del tema más amplio de la luxuria romana y su definición en términos socioeconómicos, el objetivo es analizar el lujo en la forma de diversas producciones artísticas a partir de las materias primas que las componen, en primer lugar, los marmora. Los artículos explorarán las diversas facetas del lujo aplicado al uso y exhibición de la cultura material que contribuyeron a la creación de espacios de magnificencia pública y privada desde el período republicano tardío hasta el siglo II d.C. Se compararán mármoles y artefactos líticos con otros productos ornamentales de lujo: desde los metales preciosos hasta el vidrio, pasando por imitaciones y representaciones pintadas, así como su reflejo en los autores antiguos o en las fuentes epigráficas, para constatar cómo estos fueron utilizados por las diferentes clases sociales.

À bord des navires, l'usage de la chaîne d'ancre se généralise vers 1830. À la suite de cette innovation, la terminologie des parties (méronymes) de la chaîne demeure longtemps incertaine dans la langue des marins, avant de se fixer vers la fin du XIXe siècle. Les ouvrages terminographiques et lexicographiques de l’époque témoignent de ce long flottement. Un siècle plus tard, certains auteurs de dictionnaires nautiques continuent toutefois à ignorer l'usage actuel. Dans cette communication, l'auteur se propose de confronter systématiquement le contenu des dictionnaires de marine des XIXe et XXe siècles à l’usage écrit observable dans les ouvrages spécialisés qui leur sont contemporains. Il s'attachera ainsi à montrer que la terminologie ne peut ignorer ni la diachronie ni la critique des sources de référence.

In 1964 a stone burial chamber and two other rich burials were found during building operations for a new residental area in Maastricht-Belfort. The stone chamber contained the remains of a young women and a child. In the other burial a wife and man with his hunting weapons were buried.  The burials lay within a small walled area, were probably linked to a villa nearby and dated from the middle to the third quarter of the 2nd c.

In the Lower Permian locality of Bou Rzem (Central Morroco), red pellite deposits have for the first time yielded a silicified wood with a well-preserved pith. This structure characterized by a typical secondary wood of "Dadoxylon schrollianum" type and primary vascular structure has a heterogeneous pith with nests of sclerencliyma including vertical secretory canals. A transfusion tissue is placed inside the centrifugal primary xylem. The interpretation of this structure is discussed: as single hydrocytes or residual formation of mesarch bundles. The systematic position of this wood remains problematic. Le gisement de Bou Rzem, du Permien inf6rieur a livr6 dans des argilites rouges, une structure ligneuse ~ formations primaires et moelle conserv6e. Cette structure est caract6ris6e par un bois secondaire de type Dadoxylon sehrollianum; elle pr6sente une moelle h6t6rog~ne, travers6e irr6guli~rement par des ilots scl6reux, ~t canaux s6cr6teurs verticaux. En avant de pointements ligneux primaires ~t diff6renciation centrifuge, se situe un tissu de transfusion dont l'interpr&ation est discut6e: simples hydrocytes ou modification adaptative d'un xyl~me centrip6te r6siduel, posant le probl~me de l'appartenance syst6matique de ce bois.
