El estudio propone una aproximación introductoria al arte de la platería en la diócesis de Plasencia entre los siglos XV y primera mitad del XVII, con referencias también a la etapa barroca y rococó. A partir de fuentes documentales conservadas en protocolos notariales, libros de fábrica y visitas parroquiales, se reconstruye la actividad de los talleres orfebres placentinos y su proyección en el ámbito extremeño. El trabajo ofrece una primera nómina sistemática de plateros, identificando a maestros como Mose Abenavive, Francisco de Tendilla, Gonzalo Manzano o Luis Navarrete, cuya producción se analiza en relación con encargos concretos de cálices, cruces procesionales, custodias o incensarios. La investigación destaca asimismo la distribución urbana de los obradores en torno a la plaza pública y subraya la importancia de las marcas de localidad, autor y contraste como herramientas de identificación y datación. Entre los resultados más relevantes figura la constatación de la pujanza de Plasencia como centro artístico, junto a Trujillo, en la Alta Extremadura moderna, así como la progresiva influencia de talleres externos, sobre todo cordobeses y salmantinos, a partir del siglo XVII. El trabajo sienta las bases para futuras investigaciones más amplias sobre la orfebrería religiosa en Extremadura.

This study offers an introductory approach to the art of silverwork in the Diocese of Plasencia between the fifteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century, with additional references to the Baroque and Rococo periods. Based on documentary sources preserved in notarial protocols, parish account books, and visitation records, it reconstructs the activity of local silversmith workshops and their broader impact within Extremadura. The research provides a systematic register of silversmiths, identifying masters such as Mose Abenavive, Francisco de Tendilla, Gonzalo Manzano, and Luis Navarrete, whose production is linked to specific commissions of chalices, processional crosses, monstrances, and censers. It also highlights the urban distribution of workshops around the city square and underscores the significance of town, maker, and assayer marks as tools for identification and dating. Among the most relevant findings are the confirmation of Plasencia’s importance—together with Trujillo—as a major artistic center in Early Modern Extremadura, and the growing influence of external workshops, particularly those from Córdoba and Salamanca, from the seventeenth century onward. This introductory work thus lays the foundations for further, more comprehensive studies on religious silverwork in the region.

El estudio presenta un conjunto de obras inéditas de platería religiosa del siglo XVIII en la comarca de La Serena, atribuibles al taller cordobés de Damián de Castro. Se analizan tres piezas principales: un cáliz temprano de 1751 en Cabeza del Buey, caracterizado por un perfil barroco con anticipos rococó; un cáliz rococó de Benquerencia (1782-1783), de diseño helicoidal que evoca columnas salomónicas y simbolismo bíblico; y un sagrario del convento de Concepcionistas de Cabeza del Buey (1797), donde conviven la ornamentación rococó con una clara impronta neoclásica, centrado en la iconografía del pelícano eucarístico. El hallazgo de estas piezas permite documentar variantes de marcas de contraste y de autoría, reforzando la cronología de la producción del maestro y su taller. Los resultados confirman la difusión de la platería cordobesa en Extremadura a través de redes comerciales y el trasvase de obras tras los conflictos y reorganizaciones eclesiásticas del siglo XIX, lo que convierte a estas piezas en testimonio de intercambio artístico y de resiliencia patrimonial.

The study reveals a group of unpublished eighteenth-century religious silverworks in the region of La Serena, linked to the Cordovan workshop of Damián de Castro. Three main pieces are analyzed: an early chalice from 1751 in Cabeza del Buey, with a Baroque profile anticipating Rococo; a Rococo chalice from Benquerencia (1782–1783), featuring a helical design evoking Solomonic columns and biblical symbolism; and a tabernacle from the Conceptionist convent of Cabeza del Buey (1797), combining Rococo ornament with Neoclassical clarity, centered on the Eucharistic pelican iconography. These findings document variations of assay and authorship marks, refining the chronology of the master’s production and his workshop. The results confirm the dissemination of Cordovan silverwork in Extremadura through commercial networks and the relocation of pieces after nineteenth-century conflicts and ecclesiastical reorganizations. As such, these works stand as evidence of both artistic exchange and the resilience of cultural heritage.

El estudio analiza las marcas de plateros cordobeses presentes en piezas de orfebrería religiosa de la comarca de La Serena (Badajoz), abarcando cálices, custodias, copones y coronas entre finales del siglo XVI y el siglo XX. Se ofrece un inventario detallado de obras con punzones de maestros como Sebastián de Córdoba, Simón de Tapia, Bartolomé de Gálvez y Aranda, Mateo Martínez Moreno o Diego de Vega y Torres, situando cronológicamente cada pieza y relacionándola con talleres y estilos artísticos: manierismo, purismo, rococó, neoclasicismo y eclecticismo. El trabajo demuestra cómo la calidad de la platería cordobesa y la figura de los corredores de comercio en el siglo XVIII favorecieron la amplia difusión de estas piezas en toda la península, alcanzando especial presencia en templos extremeños. Asimismo, se observa la permanencia y transformación de motivos iconográficos —querubines, símbolos eucarísticos, rocallas— y la evolución técnica y estética de la orfebrería, al tiempo que se analizan factores históricos como guerras, desamortizaciones y cambios de moda que ocasionaron pérdidas o sustituciones. Las principales aportaciones son la identificación de marcas inéditas, la atribución de piezas a autores concretos y la contextualización de la producción cordobesa dentro del patrimonio artístico y devocional de La Serena.

This study examines the marks of Cordovan silversmiths found in religious silverwork pieces from the region of La Serena (Badajoz), including chalices, monstrances, ciboria, and crowns dating from the late sixteenth to the twentieth century. A detailed inventory of objects bearing punches from masters such as Sebastián de Córdoba, Simón de Tapia, Bartolomé de Gálvez y Aranda, Mateo Martínez Moreno, and Diego de Vega y Torres is presented, with each piece dated and connected to specific workshops and stylistic currents such as Mannerism, Purism, Rococo, Neoclassicism, and Eclecticism. The analysis shows how the quality of Cordovan silverwork, together with the role of commercial brokers in the eighteenth century, contributed to the widespread dissemination of these pieces throughout the Iberian Peninsula, with notable presence in Extremaduran churches. It also highlights the persistence and transformation of iconographic motifs—cherubs, Eucharistic symbols, rocaille forms—and the technical and stylistic evolution of silverware, while considering historical factors such as wars, confiscations, and changing fashions that caused losses or replacements. The main contributions lie in the identification of previously unpublished marks, the attribution of pieces to specific craftsmen, and the contextualization of Cordovan production within the artistic and devotional heritage of La Serena.

The ethnic and religious uprisings against Saddam Hussein"s regime in Iraq were led by Shiite Arabs in the South and Kurds in the North, incentivized by the U.S.A. and its allies. The uprisings lasted from March to April 1991 directly after a ceasefire creating a halt to the Gulf War. In both the North and the South, Saddam Hussein responded with massacres which created an internal refugee population. At that time, the United States activated their own intended political and humanitarian concept, Operation Provide Comfort. This was a three-phase operation with the purpose of aiding Iraqi Kurds to return to their homeland in Northern Iraq, and later to create a no-fly zone. The present study makes use of unclassified information from the United States Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), such as documents, reports and memoirs. There is almost no attempt at assessment of the viewpoint of Kurdish reactions. Even the Peshmerga (Kurdish for "facing death"), guerilla organizations from the eighteenth century who at the time played a strong role in the North, seem to have been glossed over in the documentation. The conclusion of the present researcher(s) based on what is a one-sided documentation is a surprise and quite admirable!

Against the conventional reading of Luke 19:1-10 as a narrative that revolves around repentance and forgiveness, this article examines Luke 19:1-10, focusing on patron-client relationships as an interpretive paradigm to the text. It suggests that this narrative mirrors patronal relations in 1st-century Roman Palestine, where a few elites exploited the majority poor, reflecting the unequal and infidel socioeconomic status of the people in ancient Roman Palestine. The article argues that Luke's description of Zacchaeus as a wealthy tax collector and chief host of a banquet portrays him as an oppressive and exploitative patron of the people to whom he was writing. Thus, the narrative aims to encourage patrons to shift from negative reciprocity to 'fidei reciprocity', where giving to the poor without the desire to receive back dominates.

The prevailing belief in pastor-centeredness significantly impacts the nature of relationships between leaders and members in a church setting. In my observation as a minister, there are Filipino churches that perceive the dynamics of ministry predominantly as the sole duty of the pastor. Meanwhile, members bear the responsibility for financial sustenance. This situation seemingly portrays a patron-client relationship, especially among affluent members who act as patrons, with the pastor assuming the role of the client. This reality prompts the question of whether such relational patterns align with the intended design of the church according to biblical principles. With that in mind, this paper explores the concept of κοινωνίᾳ as “partnership” in Paul’s letter to the Philippians and how it could serve as a paradigm for a leader-member relationship by considering its theological foundations and practical applications.

Clientelism refers an exchange between political support and material needs. Clientelist policies are prevalent in the political and social structures of developing and transition countries. The reason for this is a poorly functioning civil society, the disconnection between the center and the periphery, and bureaucratic corruption. Clientelism in political dimension refers the relation between electoral and political mobilization and reredistribution of goods and benefits. Essential forms of this relation are patronage, vote buying, turnout buying and brokerage. Analyzing these clientelist relations in a specific country, region or province presents the historical conditions of the case. In this study, the situation of clientelist policies and relations in post-Soviet Georgia, will be evaluated. It will focus on how the great transformations in the social and political structure and the transition to democratic administration determine clientelist relations. The democratic situation, economic development, political development and clientelism in Georgia case will be examined. By this analyze, this study will try to fill a gap in studies about Georgia and clientelism in Georgia.

This chapter explores the intricate process of mediation and negotiation between the central royal authority and local administrations within the Spanish Monarchy, a process crucial for restoring allegiance and obedience to the Crown, especially in border regions facing contentious issues. Focusing on the dynamic relationship between Guipúzcoa and the Spanish Monarchy during the tenure of the Count-Duke of Olivares, this study examines both formal and informal scenarios of negotiation. It
scrutinizes the roles of various mediators herein, especially those of the local ‘Corregidor’ and the nuncio, as well as their influential patronage networks, which facilitated consensus‑building in the Basque Lands during this era.

Actores y poderes locales en la construcción de la monarquía hispánica (siglos XVI-XIX) es una obra colectiva que tiene como objetivo principal ofrecer una visión de conjunto acerca de la relevancia de los actores y poderes locales en los procesos de construcción estatal hispánicos entre el siglo XVI y el XIX. De alguna manera, el enfoque que aquí se ofrece "desde abajo" pretende ser complementario de todos los estudios nacionales e internacionales que existen alrededor de la idea de la construcción del Estado en Europa en la época moderna. El libro analiza estos aspectos a partir de cuatro grandes ejes: la cosmovisión y construcción de los espacios de frontera por, para y gracias a las comunidades locales; la concepción y percepción del Estado desde el mundo local y la instrumentalización desarrollada por el Estado; la acción de los actores al margen del poder a nivel local; y el análisis de la representación de las comunidades locales en los centros de poder y/o decisión y su agencia. Para ello se reúnen los trabajos de catorce especialistas en la historia de la construcción de la(s) monarquía(s) hispánica(s) de la época moderna y contemporánea con el objetivo de superar viejas delimitaciones cronológicas en aras de establecer un diálogo fructífero entre espacios, períodos y realidades políticas heterogéneas.

W Archiwum Głównym Akt Dawnych w Warszawie zachował się ciekawy dokument, zatytułowany "Ekspensa na różne potrzeby wojskowe, puszkarzom, furmanom armatnym, szpiegom i innym anno 1659 a die 8 Augusti, idąc do Kurlandyjej". Zasadniczo zawiera on szczegółowy wykaz wydatków na cele wojskowe, które poniósł z prywatnej szkatuły pisarz polny litewski Aleksander Hilary Połubiński w trakcie kampanii w Księstwie Kurlandii i Semigalii w latach 1659-1660 oraz w okresie walk na Podlasiu z wojskami moskiewskimi kniazia Iwana Andrejewicza Chowańskiego w lutym-marcu 1660 r. Do dokumentu została też dołączona krótka informacja o wydatkach poniesionych przez Połubińskiego po bitwie nad rzeką Basią (październik 1660 r.) oraz w kampaniach z lat 1656-1658, podczas których dowodził on jako regimentarz dużymi, wydzielonymi grupami wojska litewskiego. Księstwo Kurlandii i Semigalii w toczącej się od 1655 r. drugiej wojnie północnej (zwanej w historiografii polskiej "potopem") zachowywało początkowo neutralność, jednakże jesienią 1658 r. zostało zdradziecko zaatakowane przez wojska szwedzkie feldmarszałka Roberta Douglasa, który zdobył Mitawę i uwięził księcia kurlandzkiego Jakuba Kettlera. Na pomoc Kurlandczykom wysłano pod koniec 1658 r. część sił litewskich pod wodzą oboźnego litewskiego Samuela Aleksandra Komorowskiego, a w sierpniu 1659 r. dosłano tam jeszcze korpus (ok. 4500-5000 żołnierzy) pod komendą Połubińskiego. Oddziały litewskie, wspierane również przez wojska brandenbursko-pruskie, do stycznia 1660 r. zdołały wyzwolić spod szwedzkiej okupacji prawie całe Księstwo Kurlandii i Semigalii. W rękach Szwedów pozostał tylko zamek w Bowsku, który opuścili już po zawarciu pokoju w Oliwie pod Gdańskiem (3 maja 1660 r.). Po zajęciu Mitawy (9 stycznia 1660 r.) korpus Połubińskiego odszedł na Podlasie i tam został zaatakowany przez moskiewską kawalerię kniazia Chowańskiego, co o mały włos nie zakończyło się dla Litwinów tragicznie 1 .

What were the economic foundations of aristocratic magnificence in the Rome of the Baroque period? With the aim of illuminating the material conditions of what was above all an art of spending well, this article analyses the patrimony of five key figures of Roman patronage in the second half of the seventeenth century: Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, Giovanni Battista Borghese, Flavio Orsini, Gaetano Francesco Caetani and Flavio Chigi. Through examination of their account books, preserved in family archives in Rome, Vatican City and Subiaco, the present contribution examines their substantial, but varied assets and revenues, reconstructs their expenditures, considers the role of the latter in conferring social distinction and exercising seigniorial power, and discusses the necessary recourse to credit, as well as the dangers of debt, in order better to understand both the difficulties and the capacity for action of protagonists whose deployment of their patrimonies was at the heart of spectacular Roman events.

Obraz dworu jako narzędzia cywilizowania rustykalnego społeczeń stwa, stworzony przez historyków kultury, wydaje się w dużej mierze sprzeczny z przekazami źródłowymi. Zwolennikom tezy, iż polski Dwór królewski stanowił autorytet kulturowy a or ganizacja dworów magnackich była jego odzwierciedleniem, wystarczy przypomnieć "Rzeczpospolitą Babińską" Pszonków, najbardziej spektakularny wyraz opinii szlachty o sztucznym świecie hierarchii dworskiej. Obraz monarchów polskich, jako "czujnych gospodarzy" a ich otoczenia jako grona osób sympatyczych i dowcipnych, w zbiorach anegdot z XVI i XVII w. kończy się na dynastii jagiellońskiej3. W epoce późniejszej stała się "dworność ludziom przykra"4. W języku potocznym zaczęła być traktowana ambiwalentnie-zarówno jako synonim wytworności, jak wścibstwa, umizgania się, złośliwych kpin-"dworowania". Research on written newspapers of the Saxon period has been ongoing for several decades. By looking at the avis from the perspective of their editors and purveyors, we get a fuller picture of the mentality of society. Elżbieta Sieniawska, née Lubomirska (d. 1729), Wife of the Castellan of Krakow and one of the most enterprising magnates at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, collected information through her intelligence services. Had it not been for their efforts and every attempt to provide the Krakow castellan with news, it is likely that Sieniawska would have had serious problems keeping her knowledge of the country and the world up to date. Distinguishing in the article the profiles of spies, postal workers and newspaper editors, the author shows not only previously unpublished facts from the life of the information services, but above all points to the dependencies between their services.

This article analyzes Old Polish correspondence, particularly the festive wishes directed to Elżbieta z Lubomirskich Sieniawska (d. 1729), the castellaness of Kraków. The author illustrates how, in the magnate's everyday life, the tradition of greetings during Easter, Christmas, and New Year was observed. Through thoughtful expressions, various social strata expressed respect and loyalty to their patrons, contributing to the development of early modern systems of interpersonal communication. The article serves as a contribution to the study of Old Polish language history and ancient customs, presenting a synthesis of wishes sent by informants to the castellaness of Krakow. Utilizing letters and gazettes, the author argues that these wishes strengthened Sieniawska's trust in her postmen and newsmen, playing a significant role in social relations.

У статті на прикладі преамбули загальноземського привілею короля польського і великого князя литовського Казимира 1447 р., аналізується поняття «дару», що розглядається в категоріях ментальності – через концепт «правового консенсусу». В ході дослідження поєднано дипломатичний, семантичний та структурно-антропологічний підходи для прочитання та інтерпретації правового акту. «Дар» розглядається як елемент спільної мови між володарем і підданими ВКЛ. Детальніше аналізуються поняття donatio i recompensatio. Преамбула загальноземського привілею обгрунтовує надання монархом шляхетських прав як віддарування за дари підданих (“доброты, ласкы и дары”/ “bono, graciarum et libertatum”). Важливим постає антропологічне розуміння феномену «дару», як явища звичаєвої культури пізньосередньовічного і ранньомодерного суспільства ВКЛ.  Розглянуті деякі питання перекладу латиномовних правових пам’яток на руську мову.

The paper analyses the impact of local demography on the electoral strategies of ethnic political parties. We focus on Hungarian parties in Slovakia and their tactics of fielding candidates in the 2014 and 2018 mayoral elections in 4,461 municipalities with competitive elections. We find that local demography is an essential explanatory factor concerning the strategies of ethnic parties. Our results show that in towns where an ethnic minority predominates, ethnic parties are more likely to challenge each other in elections. On the other hand, we find only little support for the split demography hypothesis that ethnic parties will cooperate in such an environment. although Hungarian parties form alliances in these municipalities, their occurrence is not different than in towns where the same ethnic group dominates the local population. Finally, we observe that in areas where Hungarians are a numerical minority, inter-ethnic alliances are formed, but only by the more moderate ethnic party. In general, the paper shows that the ethnic composition of municipalities can provide incentives to avoid ethnic outbidding as well as to enhance intra-ethnic rivalry.

El comencament de la produccio de cervesa a Madrid te el seu origen arran l’arribada de la dinastia dels Austries al tron de la Monarquia d’Espanya als primers anys del segle xvi. La seva implantacio va ser duta a terme per mestres cervesers, en bona part flamencs, per abastar una cort procedent d’un territori on la cervesa era principal beguda alcoholica. Successivament, cap a mitjans del segle xvii, el sector cerveser madrileny va passar a ser reglamentat pel procediment d’estanc, una formula que es basa en la concessio en exclusiva de la fabricacio, comerc i distribucio d’un determinat producte. Finalment, el 1791, el tribunal de Madrid va suspendre aquest privilegi sota la pressio d’emprenedors i institucions de Cantabria, amb la idea de fer arribar a Madrid la cervesa que es produia a Santander. The article examines the povet soymiks functioning in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during Augustus III reign. For this purpose, were considered the soymiks types, the procedure for their convening and place of holding, pre-soymik meetings, soymiks participants, the soymik meetings beginning and consensus, the gentry placement at soymiks meetings, elections, conducting of "vyvod shlahetstva", taking the oath for office, the soymik documentation, the soymik documents approval. It has been established that throughout the soymik entire period, the gentry sought to avoid its disruption. Consensus was the main way to achieve this. The gentry in various ways sought to successfully complete the soymik, since the ambassadors elected at the soymik could present the local gentry position at the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth soym or defend its interests in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Tribunal court cases. The successful soymik completion allowed the adoption of resolutions necessary for gentry self-government in the povet, as well as confirmation of vyvod shlahetstva, gentry oaths for office, etc.

The Tatar Muslim Community in the Grodno Region according to the Documentation from the Audit of Tatar Estates of 1631 Carried out by Jan Kierdej A b s t r a c t: The Audit of Tatar Estates was carried out by field scribe of the Grodno Region Jarosz Piasecki and Oshmyany scribe Jan Kierdej under a decree of King Sigismund III Vasa and in line with the Constitutions of the General Sejm of 1625 to 1631. It is an indispensable source of knowlege on the social and economic situation among the social group of the socalled Tatar "hospodars" (in the area of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania), who remained in land military service. The Tatars, who in the area of Grodno lived mainly in two villages alongside the Lasosna River, in Svyatsk, and in the villages of Demidkovo and Mikelevshchina, provided horses to the army under two banners: the Uhlan unit of the Grodno Banner and the Uyshun unit of the Troki [Trakai] Banner. The details of individual entries in the books from the Audit of Tatar Estates allow us to trace the evolution of land ownership of the Tatars, as well as to track the demographic changes in the Tatar community of the Grodno Region and the transformation of its socioeconomic situation as a whole.

Resumen. En los últimos años, el interés por el estudio de los servidores de las Casas de las reinas se ha incrementado. La mayoría de estos trabajos se han centrado en las redes clientelares configuradas a su alrededor. Como resultado, poco sabemos acerca de la financiación de la Casa de la Reina, y de quiénes intervenían en la misma. Nuestro objetivo consiste en llenar parte de este vacío incidiendo en el papel que desempeñaron los asentistas. Este análisis nos permitirá demostrar que, pese a la introducción de los asentistas portugueses en las finanzas de la Corona a partir de la década de 1620, los genoveses siguieron siendo el grupo principal en el sostenimiento económico de la Casa de Isabel de Borbón. Además, usarán su proximidad a la familia real como instrumento para reforzar su exitosa trayectoria. Resumen. A través de la presentación de ciertos objetos que aparecen en inventarios romanos de los siglos XVI y XVII y de las trayectorias de ciertos mercaderes portugueses presentes en la ciudad en el mismo periodo, el artículo considera su papel como intermediarios culturales. Por medio de sus vínculos presuntos o reales con el mundo ibérico y sus extensos territorios y sus lazos con la burocracia de la Iglesia Católica o vínculos con el mundo de la Curia romana, estos individuos fueron los agentes capaces de hacer llegar objetos de una supuesta procedencia oriental a la ciudad. El artículo también considera cuán problemática y ambigua es la designación de oriente y cómo sus múltiples significados en la época deben ser tomados en consideración a los objetos.
