During this paper, in order to identify the priority of consideration between the problems of “mining method selection” and “determining transition depth from open-pit to underground mining” an accurate procedure is introduced step by step. First, it is essential to specify if an ore deposit that potentially will have mined by a combined method of open-pit and underground mining. In this case, optimal final open-pit limit and depth must be initially determined. After that, if the rest of deposit below open-pit limit is economically considerable, it is necessary to select the most adequate underground method with emphasis on the high production rate and low cost methods. Then, it is necessary to determine optimal transition depth from open-pit to underground mining considering a crown pillar immediately below open-pit mining. Finally, the procedure with its algorithm was used for an iron ore deposit with the combined mining potential.

An appropriate open pit slope design is the one that considers both the safety and cost aspects to minimize waste excavation. Open pit slope design of Ajabanoko iron ore deposit, Nigeria was carried out using DIPS and SLOPE/W mine softwares. Compass clinometer and Geographic Positioning System (GPS) were used to determine the dip, dip direction and location respectively of joints on the iron ore deposit and this serves as an input data in the slope design. Fifty-two dip/dip direction values were plotted using DIPS mine software. The factor of safety of the designed slope was determined using limit equilibrium method included in the slope SLOPE/W program. In order to calculate the factor of safety for the designed slopes, inputs parameters, namely unit weight of the rock mass, internal friction angle and cohesion were used in the SLOPE/W program. The obtained result indicates that slope angles with orientation of 44/071, 50/270, 61/359, 46/178 were considered safe for the eastern, western, northern and southern section of the deposit respectively. The slope design carried out shows a factor of safety that varies from a lower limit of 2.89 to an upper limit of 3.84, and this indicates safe slopes in all sections of the deposit.

Implementing stable final pit walls in open pit mines during the open pit design phase and mine exploitation has become one of the most important concerns of mining engineers in recent years. Failure of mine walls can potentially cause loss of life, roads blocks, and damage to mining machinery, temporarily or permanently halt production at the face and in the worst case scenario, close the mine. Thus, the role of creating stable mine walls is crucial to safety and general operations of mines and any effort to optimize this process has great economic value for mine operators. Concentrations of particulate emissions from a quarry located in hilly terrain were calculated by two common atmospheric dispersion models, AERMOD and CALPUFF. Evaluation of these models for emissions from quarries/open pit mines that are located in complex topography is missing from the literature. Due to severe uncertainties in the input parameters, numerous scenarios were simulated and model sensitivity was studied. Model results were compared among themselves, and to measured total suspended particulate (TSP). For a wide range of meteorological and topographical conditions studied, AERMOD predictions were in a better agreement with the measurements than those obtained by CALPUFF. The use of AERMOD's "Open pit" tool seems unnecessary when accurate digital topographic data are available. Onsite meteorological data are shown to be crucial for reliable dispersion calculations in complex terrain.

In this paper, new visual courseware for surface mining education is described. It has been developed to help and support the lecturer when teaching and as a self-study tool for students in learning surface mining methods. The software enables the constructors, students and engineers to analyze whole mining and economical aspects of surface mining methods and is fully implemented using graphical user interface technology.
