Classical contagious caprine pleuropneumonia is one of the most fatal contagious disease of goats listed by World Organization for Animal Health that leads to major economic losses. It is caused by infection with Mycoplasma capricolum subspecies capripneumoniae. In order to isolate the causative agents of CCPP for the first time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, fifteen flocks from Eastern region (Al Ahsa, Dammam and Hafr Albaten) and ten flocks from Riyadh and Al-Kharj regions were selected for this study. A total of 700 samples (400 nasal swabs, 300 pleural fluid samples and lung samples (from necropsied animals)) were collected from goats showing typical signs of CCPP. The clinical signs of diseased cases revealed serous to mucoid nasal discharge, coughing, dyspnea, frothy salivation, and fever (40-42 • C). Necropsied animals showed fibrinous pleuropneumonia and increased pleural fluid. Of 400 nasal swabs, 190 pleural fluid, and 110 lung samples, 26 (6.5%), 31 (16.3%) and 19 (17.3%) Mycoplasma isolates were recovered, respectively. Biochemically, all isolates were sensitive to digitonin and fermented glucose. Sixty seven of Mycoplasma isolates were belonged to Mycoplasma mycoides cluster based on detection of 16S rRNA. Polymerase chain reaction screening of Mycoplasma isolates using specific primer for M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae confirmed 55 isolates to be M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae.

Mycoplasma putrifaciens (Mp) is a dreadful pathogen that causes a severe, usually fatal disease in domestic goats known as MAKePS syndrome in small ruminants. The present lack of effective diagnostic and control measures leaves Pakistani farmers at perpetual great risk of financially disastrous MAKePS outbreaks. Thus far, very limited information is available on the detection and molecular characterization of the unique Mp strains prevalent in Pakistan. This study was proposed to apply modern molecular techniques to characterize endemic Mp isolates and their associated specific lesions in goats to devise an effective control strategies. Mastitis is the main signs of contagious agalactia syndrome in sheep and goats, which is caused by Mycoplasma agalactiae and induces heavy economic losses. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify M. agalactia from mastitic lactating ewes at Al-Muthana province. Clinical mastitic milk collected from infected animals. The collected samples were transferred in a transport medium which contained PPLO broth, horse serum and yeast extract at cool conditions to the lab. All the samples were carried out by PCR and cultured on PPLO agar too. The results showed that, from the total of 150 mastitic milk samples, 40% was positive by culture for the growth of mycoplasma. Out of 60 positive culture, there was 35(58.3%) positive for Mycoplasma spp. PCR and 4\35 (11.4%) were identified as Mycoplasma agalactiae by PCR. The lactating ewes with mycoplasmas mastitis exhibited non-significant variation in temperature, respiration and pulsation rates when compared with healthy ewes group.

Cattle grazing nearby coal-fired power stations are exposed to fly ash. The present investigation aims to assess the environmental and health impacts of fly ash containing mercury emitted from thermal power plant. The health effect of fly ash were studied using 20 lactating cattle reared within a 5-km radius of s thermal power plant for the possible effect of fly ash such as the alterations in hematological and biochemical parameters of blood, milk, and urine. Results indicated that the hemoglobin levels (6.65±0.40 g/dl) were significantly reduced in all the exposed animals. Biochemical parameters viz., blood urea nitrogen (27.35 ± 1.19 mg/dl), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (43.39±3.08 IU/l), albumin, and creatinine were found to be increased, whereas serum glutamate pyruvic transaminase (29.26±2.02) and Ca 2+ were observed to be statistically insignificant in exposed animals. Mercury concentrations estimated in the blood, milk, and urine of exposed (n020) and control (n020) animals were 7.41±0.86, 4.75±0.57, 2.08±0.18, and 1.05±0.07, 0.54±0.03, 0.20±0.02 μg/kg, respectively. The significant increase (P<0.01) in the levels of mercury in blood, milk, and urine of exposed animals in comparison to control indicated that the alterations of biochemical parameters in exposed cattle could be due to their long term exposure to fly ash mercury which may have direct or indirect impact on human populations via food chain.

Two groups of goats infected by the endotracheal route and by aerosol, respectively, were placed in contact with a third group of naive animals. Six weeks after infection, some animals from both the infected and contact groups presented fever and nasal discharge, followed by severe respiratory signs and polyarthritis. Organs were taken from animals that died during the trial or those that were sacrificed at the end of the trial. The results of microbiological isolation and immunohistochemical tests conducted on the organs were compared after a description of the clinical picture and anatomopathological and histopathological signs.

Objective: This study was carried out to assess the pathogenicity of local isolates of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae and M. arginini in West African dwarf goats (kids) in Nigeria. Materials and methods: A total of 22 goats aged less than 1-year were purchased from markets. The goats were divided into six groups comprising of four experimental groups (EG; 4 in each) and two control groups (CG; 3 in each). The goats were fed ad libitum with standard diets and safe water. Groups EG1 and EG2 were infected with M. ovipneumoniae through trans-tracheal (TT) and intravenous (IV) routes, respectively, while those in groups EG3 and EG4 were infected with M. arginini through the same routes. Goats in groups CG1 and CG2 were inoculated with sterile Mycoplasma broth through TT and IV routes, respectively. In all cases, the amount of bacteria inoculated was 1.5x10 8 cells/mL. After the onset of the disease in goats, re-isolation of Mycoplasma was performed by culturing on mycoplasma agar supplemented with mycoplasma supplement G. The goats were monitored for 14 days post-infection (PI) to observe respiratory signs and mortality. Post-mortem (PM) examination was performed on each animal that died, while one surviving goat from each of the groups was sacrificed at 14 days PI for PM. After PM, histopathology was performed to observe the changes in tissues. Results: Cough and nasal discharges were observed in all the experimentally infected goats seven days PI. Mortalities were recorded in goats in EG1 (two goats), EG2 (one goats), EG3 (two goats) and EG4 (one goat). At PM, pneumonic lesions were observed in the lungs of all the experimentally infected goats. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that the local isolates of M. ovipneumoniae and M. arginini strains are pathogenic for goats in Nigeria.

Contagious agalactia (CA) is a serious disease of small ruminants that occurs in many countries, and is usually characterized by mastitis, arthritis, keratoconjunctivitis, pleuropneumonia, and septicemia. Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma) is the main causative agent in sheep and goats but other pathogens including Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri (Mmc, which incorporates the former M. mycoides subsp. mycoides Large Colony type), Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum (Mcc), and Mycoplasma putrefaciens (Mp) might be involved. They are all usually associated with infections in goats and may cause similar clinical signs. A total of 116 sheep and 16 goats suffering from the acute form of the disease were included in this study. They were recruited following a number of outbreaks suspected to be CA in the Ardebil province of Iran. Milk, lachrymal or synovial fluid were collected exclusively from the affected animals in order to identify the pathogen involved. Of the 132 collected samples, 33 (25%) were positive for Mycoplasma species by culture in PPLO broth and agar. The polymerase chain reaction followed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR/DGGE) method identified 18 (12 sheep and 6 goats) of the 33 Mycoplasma positive samples with mixed Mycoplasma population. In particular, 25 Ma (47.2%), 23 Mp (43.4%), 4 Mcc (7.5%), and 1 Mmc (1.9%) were identified. This confirms that the several Mycoplasma species rather than the Ma only are in circulation, and are able to cause CA in sheep and goats in Iran. This is the first report on the isolation and identification of Mp, Mmc and Mcc in infected small ruminant flocks in Iran.

The present study was aimed to assess clinic-haematological changes in cows showing hoof and horn abnormalities, reared around Koradi Thermal Power Plant, Nagpur, Maharashtra (India). Hoof and horn abnormalities are usually attributed to selenium toxicity. Twenty cows were randomly selected within a radius of 5 km of thermal power plant. Blood, urine and milk samples were analyzed for haemato-biochemical changes. Also, the selenium level was estimated and compared with control samples taken from Deolapar Cattle Farm and Agriculture College Dairy Farm (located within the same agro-climatic conditions but away from the impact area of fly ash). Mean selenium value in blood of exposed animals was insignificantly higher than unexposed animals while selenium in urine and milk of exposed cows was significantly higher than control though within the permissible range. The haemato-biochemical parameters viz., haemoglobin, AST, ALT, serum creatinine and BUN of exposed cows were insignificantly less than control cows. Air, water, soil and fodder samples, collected from the study area, showed the selenium level of 3 ng m-3 , 0.001±0.002 ppm,-0.593 ppm and 1.25±0.20 ppm, respectively. It appears that the selenium level in impact area has not reached to the level that may develop selenium toxicity like sloughing of horns, weakness and hoof deformity; and the symptoms observed are due to the factor other than selenium toxicity.

All life forms depend ultimately upon sunlight to create the energy ‘currency’ required for the functions of living. Green plants can make that conversion directly but the rest of us would perish without access to foods derived, directly or indirectly, from plants. We also require their fibre which we use for clothing, building and other purposes. However, plants, just as humans and animals, are attacked by pathogens that cause a myriad of symptoms that can lead to reduced yields, lower quality products and diminished nutritional value. Plant pathogens share many features with their human and animal counterparts. Some pathogens - whether of humans, animals, or plants - have nimble genomes or the ability to pirate genes from other organisms via mobile elements. Some have developed the ability to cross kingdoms in their host ranges. Many others share virulence factors, such as the type III secretion system (T3SS) or mechanisms for sensing population density, that work equally well in all kingdoms. Certain pathogens of hosts in all kingdoms rely upon insect vectors and use similar mechanisms to ensure dispersal (and sometimes survival) in this way. Plant-pathogen interactions have more direct consequence for humans when the microbes are human pathogens such as Escherichia coli 0157:H7 and Salmonella spp., which can contaminate fresh produce or when they produce metabolites, such as mycotoxins, which are harmful when consumed. Finally, national biosecurity concerns and the need for prevention, preparedness and forensic capabilities cross all kingdom barriers. Thus, our communities that focus on one of these kingdoms have much to learn from one another and a complete and balanced ‘One Health’ initiative must be tripartite, embracing the essential components of healthy plants, healthy animals and healthy people.
