Music and identity

The purposes of the current study were to develop the corpus-based lessons in reading English newspaper course and to determine the effectiveness of the corpus-based vocabulary exercises. The samplings of the study were forty-three-third year students majoring English, the Faculty of Sciences and Liberal Arts, Rajamangala University of Technology Isan. To instruct the selected 50 vocabulary words, the corpus-based vocabulary exercises were constructed on a theoretical framework developing from the Constructivism Theory, Second Language Acquisition Theory, and Vocabulary Learning and Teaching Theories that were used for a period of 10 weeks. The research instruments of the current study were the pre-test, the post-test, and the questionnaire. The quantitative data were analyzed through the paired sample t-test and the qualitative data were analyzed by using the software package. The findings reveal that using corpus-based lessons were effective and could help EFL students to improve their vocabulary knowledge, perceive the words, comprehend the meaning of the words, and also employ the words properly in the news contexts. On the basis of these findings, future recommendations for scholars are discussed.

This study examined the effects of future career interest in science and gender, both used as moderator variables, on students' acquisition of science process skills when taught Basic Science with simulated laboratory and enriched laboratory guide material experiments. It adopted the pretest-posttest control group quasi-experimental design with a 3x2x2 factorial matrix. Participants in the study included 277 (130 males, 147 females; ± 17years) junior secondary three students randomly selected from six purposively chosen secondary schools based on the existence of functional computer and physics laboratories. Science process skills test in Basic Science (r = 0.72) and Future career interest in science questionnaire (r = 0.99) were used to collect the data, which were processed using analysis of covariance and estimated marginal means in order to test three null hypotheses at 0.05 level of signi􀅭icance. Future career interest in science signi􀅭icantly affected students' science process skills acquisition in Basic Science. At the same time, there was none for gender nor interaction effect between future career interest in science and gender. Thus, students' acquisition of science process skills depends largely on future career interest in science which determines effective participation in Basic Science activities, especially laboratory experiments. It is recommended that teachers are acquainted with students' future career interests in science and utilize the same to encourage effective participation in Basic Science practicals. This could assist students in acquiring science process skills needed to experience and practice science for better performance in biology, chemistry, and physics at the post-basic education level in Nigeria.

This study aimed to investigate the challenges encountered by the indigenous students in assessing quality education in the mountainous area of Lanao Kapanglao. It is located in the Northern part of the Municipality of Glan, 42 kilometers travel and 12 hours hike from the barangay proper of Datal Bukay, Glan Sarangani Province, Philippines. Furthermore, this study also examined the students' demographic profile, ethnic traditions, and daily lifestyle and the difficulties experienced by the teachers assigned in this remote and marginalized area. The respondents of this study were Forty (40) indigenous students from different grade levels. These pupils belong to the one and the most unfortunate and unprivileged pupils in the whole country. Likewise, all students belonged to a very low-income family with a P1000 monthly income and were forced to take absences in school to work on their local farms. Moreover, their school lacks school materials due to the lack of funding and poor accessibility; this condition hampers the students from learning. Even the classroom used was not conducive. Electrification also is a major problem in the community. Hence, the teacher also cannot use their multi-media as an aid in teaching. Overall, their rich indigenous traditions were practiced frequently in their community. On the basis of the findings, recommendations for the government and policymakers are enlisted. These recommendations are aimed to help the students and teachers of Lanao Kapanglao.

This study discusses the postcolonial movement of Kyai Sholeh Darat in fighting Dutch colonialism at the end of the 19-20 centuries. This study is interesting because so far there has been a physical resistance movement against colonial figures. This study finds Kyai Sholeh's postcolonial movement through his cultural approach. Methodologically, this research is included in the library research category to produce historical research studies based on postcolonial movements carried out by Kiai Sholeh Darat. From this it was found that the movement culture of Kiai Sholeh Darat in post-Java War 19th and early 20th century Java seen as a postcolonial spirit and identity, with evidence showing a tendency towards a series of domination colonial regime in various lines of life of the Javanese people. cultural movement Kiai Sholeh Darat reflects the identity of the postcolonial movement through movement literacy which is manifested by publishing writings in the pegon script and translating the Qur'an into Javanese as a form of resistance against the colonial project that seeks to separate Java from Islam. This article discusses the community's receptivity to the Qur'an based on ethnographic studies in the Commemoration of Nuzul al-Qur'an which was held at the Khoirunnisa' Mosque and Majlis Taklim, Gondang Village, Wonopringgo District, Pekalongan Regency. The people in the area are very heterogeneous and consist of five ideologies namely Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Rifa'iyah, and Nationalist. This essay investigates Frank Paci’s dominant themes of death and life in Black Madonna and the author’s use of relics to retrace post-migrant spaces. I examine his connections between immigrant and post-immigrant generations in the microcosm of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and the way he preserves memories of the past (family, work, religious practices) while refashioning an Italian regional identity from a deterritorialized position. My approach to the themes of death, life, Italianness, and gender relationships is shaped by Michel de Certeau’s theories of place and space. Relics are defined here as something that survives the passage of time––either at a specific location or across spatial movement––and is invested with a sense of devotion. My argument is that Paci’s writing is devotional insofar as it preserves the memory of immigrants by disseminating the text with different kinds of traces (e.g., human, behavioural, linguistic). But beneath the widescreen pageantry lies a fundamental problem: the characters behave like fools, and the script assumes the audience won't notice. Miguel: The Guerrilla "Leader" Who Gambles Everything Frank Sinatra's Miguel is supposed to be a charismatic guerrilla leader rallying his people against Napoleon's forces. Yet when Cary Grant's British officer Anthony Trumbell-the only man alive who can actually operate the cannon-gets into a fight with one of the guerrillas, Miguel allows it to proceed. If Trumbell had been killed, the entire plan collapses. No cannon, no rebellion, no "pride," no "passion." What kind of leader risks his campaign on a brawl? Only in Hollywood could such recklessness be framed as courage. Contemporary critics noticed the same dissonance. The study examines the effects of social identity and knowledge quality on knowledge transfer across groups. One hundred and forty-four students performed a production task in three-person groups. Midway through the task, a member from a different group rotated into each group. The primary dependent variable was whether the group adopted the production routine of the rotating member. Analyses revealed the predicted main and interactive effects. Groups were more likely to adopt the routine of a rotator when they shared a superordinate social identity with that member than when they did not. Groups were also more likely to adopt a routine from a rotator when it was superior than when it was inferior to their own. Further, superordinate groups adopted the production routine of the rotator when it was superior but not inferior to their own, whereas groups that did not share a superordinate identity with the rotator generally did not adopt the rotatorÕs production routine, even when it was superior to their own and would have improved their performance.

The exploration of Mahmoud’s psychological situation will be made possible using the studies of Sigmund Freud. “Meet me in France to help me encounter my Acadian
ancestors.” The Acadians were French settlers who established a unique
culture in Atlantic Canada before being forcibly removed by the British in
the 18th century. Taking up the invitation, five disparate artist/scholars
gathered in France, but all their approaches would fit under the bigger tent
of Research-based Theatre (RbT), an arts-based methodology in which
embodied performances are created through the systematic research of
real-life events and social issues. How does RbT serve to help us navigate
the liminal space between research questions and the creation of theatre
itself? If RbT is a term that encompasses a variety of approaches, how
would grafting disparate artistic techniques transform our understandings

The health promotion (HP) community advocates for capacity building, quality assurance and political awareness of HP. Professional identity (PI) is of great relevance to these goals as persons who strongly identify with their profession better adopt their professional role, raising the quality, competence and common values within a professional group. However, investigations on the HP workforce are missing. In order to investigate PI formation in HP professionals, a longitudinal study was conducted with two student cohorts of a Swiss HP and prevention undergraduate program. Using a qualitative approach, focus groups were conducted at the beginning and end of the undergraduate program. Data were transcribed verbatim and condensed using thematic analysis. The results highlight the complexity of the HP’s professional profile. were administered to 160 Navajo college students to explore the relation between ethnic identity and culturally related anxiety, compare level of ethnic identity in reference to standardized samples, and test for gender differences. Correlations indicated a notable lack of relation between ethnic identity and cultural anxiety. This particular Navajo sample evidenced significantly higher levels of ethnic identity in comparison to students of Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, or mixed ethnicity. There were no significant gender differences in culturally related anxiety. Many research has been done on professional madrasa (Islamic school) teachers, but incorporating Islamic values and motivation for continuous professional development into them has been neglected. This study aims to determine Islamic professional madrasa teachers based on motivation for continuous professional development in the teaching for future profession. This study used a phenomenological research design, and involving 16 aliyah madrasa teachers as informans. Data was collected by conducting interviews with madrasa teachers and analyzed using a systematic design. This research shows that Islamic professional madrasa teachers are related to prophetic abilities based on Islamic values, moral, and related to human functions as khalifah (leader), imarat al-ard (manage the world), and 'abdullah (servant who worships Allah). Madrasa teachers view the motivation for future professional involvement in professional Islamic teachers as involvement in self-development through continuous learning, trying to be the best in every activity and fighting endlessly in educating students, anyone who has sincere intentions and has the desire for continuous learning and self-development both academically and nonacademicly, training or workshops and also seminars and includes involvement in various forums for future professional development. Teaching is an inseparable part of getting blessings from God (Allah SWT). Utilizing technology to develop learning materials, learning methods, learning evaluation, and others that support the competency of madrasa teachers. The category of dissociative identity disorder (DID) has puzzled medical science and fascinated popular culture for almost 200 years. Its occurrence in young people raises at least two new questions addressed by science studies and embedded philosophy: self-diagnosis (related to cyberchondria and mass media-induced illness) and transient disease (related to looping effect and identity claim specific to adolescence). In an attempt to refine the sociocognitive model, we analyze the impact of these notions in understanding the local ecological niche in which contemporary adolescent DID occurs.

The article establishes the most appropriate context for understanding Pietro Antonio Bianco's Missa Percussit Saul mille. In 1601 the Inner-Austrian Archduke Ferdinand II appears to have commissioned a Mass based on Giovanni Croce's militaristic motet Percussit Saul mille for a solemn Mass celebrated before his departure for the battle of Kanisza. Its composition was entrusted to Ferdinand's kapellmeister, Bianco. The latter's Mass seems to be a musical statement of political ideas and demonstrates the function, convention and ideology of ceremonial sacred music at the Graz court around the turn of the sixteenth century. It reflects a political-musical culture that flourished even more greatly after Ferdinand became Emperor.

On the basis of direct and indirect evidence, three main types of musical repertoire in the early-seventeenth-century Slovenian lands can be established that directly relate to the CounterReformation: plainchant, sacred song in the vernacular, and contemporary polyphonic music. The textual emphasis of the preserved musical pieces above all helped to shape a distinctly Counter-Reformation religious identity: contemporary polyphonic compositions, above all Litanies and Marian antiphons, with the emphasis of the dogma of sanctoral intercession; the acclamations Christus vincit with the stating of the pope Clemens VIII’s religious integrity; and responsory Sedil ie k’misi with accentuation of the transubstantiation. Alhough the vernacular songs heard in Corpus Christi processions are lost to us, they were probably characteristic of the Catholic soundscape and also must have att racted the att ention of the listeners and confronted them with the confessional challenge directly. With the campaign of reform and propaganda, promoted principally by the bishop Hren, the successful progress of Catholic reform in the Slovenian lands at the beginning of the seventeenth century stabilised the situation in many musical institutions.

Recovery from conditions leading to illness/disability is often defined in terms of physical improvement; however, people themselves describe their own recovery as more than this alone: it is a returning to the life they led before their illness. These two approaches highlight a potential mismatch between the way we as health care professionals perceive our world (the observable) and the way the people we are caring for perceive their world (often hidden from us). In this presentation I will explore how we can access the subjective world of those who use our services by exploring the role of life narratives within rehabilitation. I will share ideas from research linked to life changes, sense of self, and agency which we can use to inform our practice and support people in their recovery and rehabilitation. This study explores how study abroad experiences contribute to the displacement of cultural roots in contemporary Nepali narratives-both literary and lived. As increasing numbers of Nepali youth pursue education in Western countries, their stories often reflect a tension between aspiration and alienation, global mobility and cultural disconnection. Drawing from postcolonial theory and cultural displacement frameworks, this research analyzes selected Nepali novels, memoirs, and student testimonies to understand how educational migration reshapes identity, belonging, and cultural memory. Findings reveal a recurring narrative arc: initial idealization of the West, followed by experiences of marginalization and internal conflict, and ultimately a fragmented sense of cultural identity. The study highlights how Western education, while offering opportunity, often imposes subtle pressures to assimilate, leading to a detachment from native language, traditions, and familial structures. Moreover, returning students frequently struggle with reintegration , caught between two cultural paradigms. These patterns not only reflect the personal costs of academic globalization but also raise critical questions about the future of cultural continuity in Nepal. By foregrounding Nepali voices and texts, this research calls for a more culturally grounded understanding of study abroad experiences-one that recognizes the emotional and narrative complexities of cross-border education in a postcolonial context.

This chapter introduces and summarizes the major themes, arguments, and contributions of this book. How can liberals and classical liberals fight back against the populist threat to liberty, free markets, and the open society? I explore the defining characteristics of populism, to make populism intelligible, recognizable, and contestable. I explain the ideational background of the populist ideas and strategies and show how populists promote their non-liberal institutional changes through the deliberate polarization of society and a collectivistic identity politics. Based on this analysis several counterstrategies are developed that require a revival of classical liberalism.

This paper examines the plays of Mahesh Dattani, renowned contemporary Indian dramatist, through the lens of psychological androgyny, with special focus on the conflict between dharma defined as duty and collective ethical code-and individual desire, or the striving for self-expression and authenticity, within a modern context. By employing Sandra Bem's theory of psychological androgyny, the study argues that Dattani portrays such characters through his plays, who embody a blend of masculine and feminine psychological traits. These characters act as ethical agents who subvert patriarchal and heteronormative expectations. By analysing selected plays such as "Bravely Fought the Queen" and "Dance Like a Man", this paper argues that psychological androgyny is a catalyst for ethical agency, allowing characters to reinterpret dharma through the lens of emotional integrity and self-awareness.

This study explored the perspectives of teachers and students regarding the academic and socio-emotional benefits of Peer Tutoring (PT) as a strategy to support students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) in middle schools in Saudi Arabia. The research was prompted by the recent expansion of special education services in Saudi Arabia to include primary and middle school students and the introduction of new teaching methods to enhance the learning experiences of SpLD students. A qualitative case study was conducted in six inclusive schools running active PT programs for at least one year to ensure that participants had sufficient experience to develop an informed opinion on the benefits of this approach. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 Special Education Need (SEN) teachers responsible for implementing PT in their schools, 18 mainstream students who played the role of tutors, and 19 SpLD students who played the role of tutees. Participants' perceptions were further examined using data collected from observations of student roles and behaviors during 16 PT sessions. The findings indicate that PT was perceived as an effective method for providing academic support for SpLD students and was associated with improved academic performance, motivation, and participation. However, SEN teachers and students expressed different perceptions about the efficacy of this technique in supporting the development of social and emotional skills among SpLD students. These differences may be attributable to a lack of systematic planning and supervision before and during PT sessions, reflected in limited awareness among students regarding the objectives of PT programs. Based on the findings outlined above, there is strong evidence for integrating PT programs into Saudi schools as a supplement to lecture-style classes, given the potentially academic, social, and emotional benefits that this approach offers to SpLD students.

In present article three Plutarchan sources are re-examined Hesiod's claim to have won a poetry contest: Schol. Hesiod WD 650-662 and references to the story in Table Talk and The Dinner of the Seven Wise Men. Starting point is a close reading of the Proclan scholion in the light of Plutarch's sympotic work. While the former introduces a Plutarch averse to mythopoeia, the latter shows just how important story-telling is to him in promoting and maintaining Panhellenic tradition and identity under a Roman rule.

Taking into account relationships between interacting objects can improve the understanding of the dynamic model governing their behaviors. Moreover, maintaining a belief about the ongoing activity while tracking allows online activity recognition and improves the tracking task. We investigate the use of Relational Dynamic Bayesian Networks to represent the relationships for the tasks of multi-target tracking and explicitly consider a discrete variable in the state to represent the activity for online activity recognition. We propose a new transition model that accommodates relations and activities and we extend the Particle Filter algorithm to directly track relations between targets while recognizing ongoing activities.

Concebemos as práticas de resistência identitária como formas de ação social através das quais padrões identitários hegemônicos são contestados em favor da promoção e valorização de novas formas de identificação. Os discursos de resistência identitária associados à velhice constituem um conjunto de atos discursivos por meio dos quais se contesta o modo como o velho é identificado, tendo a juventude como base identitária. The transition to becoming a mother carries challenges to role, identity, and self-image. Myths and archetypes related to motherhood connect societal and personal expectations with individual experiences. The fairy tale “Snow White” emerged within a single session of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) therapy for a young mother in the postpartum phase. Although previously written up as a clinical case report, this example is now explored as a research case study, which is seen as a unique case with intrinsic qualities and explored via an explanatory approach. The systematic methodology developed for this research case study follows a typology of eight key elements of the Snow White fairy tale, comparing this pattern to the individualized narrative of this young mother. In doing so, variations to the original tale are explored in light of Jungian interpretations, which inform the experience of motherhood. Taking into account the specificities of (post) Yugoslav neostalgia (Velikonja, 2010) there is a strong need for theory to take a closer look at the multiplicities of both Yugoslavia and its nostalgia(s). Introducing the political aspect of nostalgia, with particular focus on the last generation of pioneers (born between 1974 and 1982), we are leaving the banalizing official post-communist discourses (Buden, 2012) on nostalgic transition losers and those academic discourses that deny nostalgic sentiments of the ability to generate a political movement or a programme (Horvat and Štiks, 2015). Within revisionist political and cultural discourses, nostalgia emerges, through Svetlana Boym's concept of counter-memory (Boym, 2001), in public spaces without state control and without the control of dominant discourses of political elites, and as such is being translated into reflective nostalgia (Boym, 2001, p.49). Through this reflection, the last generation of pioneers creates memory narratives that interweave the political and the nostalgic. These narratives perform as "noeuds de mémoire" -exceeding attempts of territorialisation and identitarian reduction (Rothberg, 2010) and through their multidirectionality (Rothberg, 2009), they emerge as meta-national Yugonostalgic memory, creating a new paradigm in the political field This essay aims to provide further reflection on possible theoretical frameworks for understanding the phenomenon of Yugonostalgia and its place within the political imaginary of the last pioneers. Remaining embedded in research and theory, I have decided to structure this article as an invitation to a dialogue, rather than a fully rounded academic article. The present political phenomena demand new perspectives and thinking about Yugonostalgia remains a challenge.

School resilience is too little the main issue within the Romanian educational system. It is addressing
especially to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. We could say, without being wrong, that our
investigative approach is almost a pioneer in the Romanian education system. We have operationalized the
concept of resilience in the leadership of the school principal / deputy, the leadership of teachers,
educational effectiveness, the trust of parents and students in school, teachers' trust in their mission. The
research was conducted in 11 disadvantaged schools, selected based on process and context indicators,
schools where the dropout rate is above the national average and well above the European target. In each
school, focus groups with students and parents and teachers were organized, as well as an interview with
the principal/ deputy. Questionnaires were also applied to the principals / deputies, teachers, students at risk
and their parents. The hypotheses were confirmed in the sense that in the investigated schools, although
with students at risk, the essential elements of developing an environment conducive to assisted resilience
are not defined. Teachers from investigated schools do not trust their ability to change destinies, parents do
not trust school, and the school does not trust parents. The principal is not a leader, he/ she does not value
his / her staff. Therefore, in schools investigated, resilient students are sporadic, unscheduled, unassisted

The main objectives of this paper are to analyze the relation between memory and oblivion and their exterior forms to the level of physical and cultural space. The notion of memory places (defined as accumulations of signs of identity and their materializations) is presented in its two manifestations: as memory landmarks (connection points to the collective past) and as memory signs. The distinction is based on the power of memory to remind us who we are, but also what we forgot about ourselves. We divided the paper in several parts.

Dalit writings have become a central venue of resistance within Indian literature, placing a significant emphasis on the experiences of marginalised communities often overlooked in mainstream discourse. Although there is increasing attention to the experiences of Dalit women, previous scholarship has tended to focus on one of caste, class, or gender to the exclusion of the others. This gap inhibits a deeper appreciation of the nature of oppression that is experienced among Dalit women. In this paper, the problem is tackled through the intersectional postcolonial feminist approach to the analysis of the memoir written by Gidla. The main aim is to discuss the role of Ants Among Elephants in reflecting the superimposed systems of marginalisation and prove that literary testimony is a counter-history. In its methodology, the study follows a qualitative design incorporating both close textual reading and contextual interpretation. The information comprises chosen narrative fragments that describe deprivation, discrimination, and resistance. These were coded thematically under the categories of class, caste, and gender, and analysed through the lens of intersectional theory. It can be observed in the findings that the oppression of Dalit women is a phenomenon that cannot be understood using specific categories, but only simultaneously. The research is also significant in Dalit and feminist literature criticism because it addresses fragmented intellectual writings, implying that life writing is not only a literary genre but also a form of political resistance within both Dalit and feminist contexts. Recommendations encompass areas such as broadening comparative studies on memoirs by Dalit women, transnational reception, and intersectional approaches in the field of South Asian literature.

To investigate the role of friendships in science identity formation, we are conducting a longitudinal survey of 441 students in an ethnically diverse Title I Middle School. This research-based approach, framed within a sociological conceptual model, will provide depth in our understanding of how to motivate and engage youth from groups underrepresented in biomedical science, and will contribute to the sociological literature on identity formation. Science educators assume most youth have a natural propensity toward science and inquiry, and will engage with science activities and ideas if they are presented in fun and appealing ways. We call this natural propensity "discovery orientation." We have designed and piloted a measure of "discovery orientation" by asking about science propensities without using the word "science." The label science in our culture is imbued with stereotypes, mostly as "white" and "male". By not using the word science in survey questions and by separately measuring explicit science identity, we are able to investigate whether labeling science makes a difference in youths' identification as a science kind of person. Preliminary findings indicate that although discovery orientation does not vary by race or gender, science identity does. White boys have higher science identity than minority boys, minority girls and white girls. Minority boys and girls also have significantly lower science enjoyment and science competence than white boys. Minority boys and girls, and white girls are less likely to say that others see them as a 'science kind of person'. Using structural equation modeling, we explore multiple pathways to science identity.

Science trust and views of science differ by political and religious orientations. In this study we examine whether political and religious perspectives are also associated with biological science knowledge, science interest, and general science identity. Results show that conservative Protestants have lower biological science knowledge than other religious groups on several specific topics. Party affiliation is associated with vaccine knowledge but not science interest and identity. Adjusting for demographic characteristics explains some political and religious group differences, but not all. We discuss implications regarding attention to potential political and religious framings of science topics in public education efforts.

Postliberal theology as theological reference for the church’s corporate identityThis article seeks to show the importance of culture and symbols, as in the business sector in terms of corporate culture and image, so too mutatis mutandis in the church. The post liberal theology would be a basis of such an argument. A short exposition of the theology of George Lindbeck is given in order to indicate that his categories should be interpreted dynamically which means that the one-way direction of influence in the cultural-linguistic model gets dialectical, once this relation has been established. In a time of identity crises for established churches, corporate symbols are of utmost importance. Therefore, this process should be managed and exploited. Recognition of the particular has its place in the post liberal theology without abolishing ecumenism or, in the words of Lindbeck, “reconciliation without capitulation”.

The church’s corporate identityThis article investigates the rather unknown theme of “corporate identity and corporate image” as applied to the church. Starting from the premise that corporate identity enables us to communicate change, direction and a church’s point of difference, it is evident that proper strategic and visionary management is a prerequisite for the church today. “Corporate image is in the eyes of the world” and this urges the church to regard this undertaking in a serious light. Thus, a church's unique selling proposition has to be identified, not necessarily to compete, but to add specific value for its members. The concept of “sur/petition” of Edward de Bono (vis-à-vis competition) is pursued in an integrated value system. The article addresses the distortion between the intended and the received image of the church.

This paper addresses an ongoing experience with the Rede Beija-flor de Pequenas Bibliotecas Vivas de Santo André, a civil society organization, in the field of the right to literature, as a human right for all. Santo André, SP, Brazil is a rich but unequal city, marked by its past working-class identity, though, nowadays, it no longer knows what its identity is. The actors include college professors, young students in training to become primary school teachers, and residents of vulnerable territories. Experience points to possibilities of a relationship between different historical and age generations within a cofigurative cultural order, thus, a temporary one. Everything is open and undefined. The place, living library, is not home, work, or school. It is a third place, where people encounter themselves and others, a place of complete freedom. Colonialism brings many effects toward people's life, especially those who have ever become the colonized. One of some psychological effects that are often experienced by the colonized is double consciousness. In V.S. Naipaul's A House for Mr. Biswas, double consciousness is experienced by the main character named Mr. Biswas. This thesis aims to analyze Mr. Biswas' double consciousness as an Indian diaspora in Trinidad using double consciousness theory by Homi K. Bhabha. This analysis finds that Mr. Biswas' double consciousness is caused by indentured labor that deals with displacement or separation toward the colonized from their motherland. As the result, the colonized who experience this double consciousness suffer from the confusing sense about their authentic identity.

Abstract
Family conversations on sex and sexuality are often one of the most challenging conversations for parents and adolescents although there is proof that effective talks can reduce adolescents’ sexual risk (Grossman, Jenkins & Richer, 2018; Rogers, 2017; Rogers,  Ha,  Stormshak & Dishion, 2015; Braithwaite, Schrodt & Carr, 2014). Research has presented adolescents as the most risk-taking population (United Nations (UN), 2016; United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), 2011) and parents are aware of this. Parents’ attitudes towards sex and sexuality shape adolescents’ perception (UNICEF, 2019; Grossman et al., 2018) and their subsequent communication on sex and sexuality. Yet, many parents continue to evade sex-related communications with adolescents for many reasons including that they are waiting for adolescents to come of age (Blaisse, 2010). Similarly, research presents that adolescents do not want to engage in sex and sexuality talks with their parents either (Tilton-Weaver, Kerr, Pakalniskeine, Tokic, Salihovic & Stattin, 2010). It is not only because their parents have not talked to them. Adolescents avoid sex talks because they do not trust the quality of knowledge from their parents. Consequently, they would rather talk to their siblings and peers or learn from school. Haydon, Hill, Ward and Eggett (2023) shed more light on this by stating that they thrive to be different. As such, not revealing their private information means preserving what makes them unique. 

This study fills the gap on how African family members in South Africa, with adolescents, communicate sex and sexuality with each other including how they decide on what to say and what not to say. Guided by the Communication Privacy Management theory (CPM), this qualitative design-based study explores how family members negotiate rule management, how they coordinate boundaries, how they handle privacy violations, and advice on how they should actually communicate these. This thesis is the result of 40 in-depth interviews with participants from African families residing within the borders of South Africa. 20 parents of adolescents share their experiences as adolescents, but mostly while parenting adolescents, and 20 young adults spoke in retrospect about their adolescence.

The main purpose of this study was to understand the role which sex and sexuality communication play in the lives of adolescents in African families in South Africa, and what influences the openness or closedness of their communication. In the process of exploring these topics, responses were coded and presented to answer four research questions that guide this study. Topics discussed include the following: rules development, boundary coordination, boundaries turbulence, and advice to parents and adolescents. Findings indicate that due to existing rules that govern sex and sexuality communication, family members encounter known and unknown boundaries because they see sex and sexuality communication as intruding. At the same time, disclosure rules facilitate how information ownership and secrets are managed alongside encounters of privacy violations. I interpret the findings, provide the implications of the findings, present the study’s limitations, and future directions.
