Jill Schostak and I wrote this book as part of our evolving interest in doing research radically.  By radically we mean engaging with people's voices to learn how to create the conditions for social justice and for democratising all the organisations of everyday life.  We draw on our own research but also on the ways in which the media is used to shaw people's voices and behaviours.  We explore all the ways in which the desires and demands of elites are inscribed upon minds and bodies as well as how writing may create the conditions for counter inscriptions.  Writing research is to engage politically.  Whether it is the Arab Spring re-inscribing hopes for freedom, the Occupy Movement or young people challenging orthodoxies at home or in classrooms through use of the media, it is the power of writing in its broadest sense that makes the difference.

Parallelism may indeed be fundamental to poetic discourse, but the very degree to which it appears fundamental makes the concept as a whole challenging to pin down.  This is an introduction to the pre-print of working papers for the seminar-workshop Parallelism in Verbal Art and Performance (26-27 May 2014, Helsinki, Finland).  After introducing the event, it prefaces the working papers of this event with a review of some of the topics and themes that are found across them, as well as some of the significant questions concerning parallelism that connect and relate the different papers to one another.  This preliminary survey and discussion has two primary intentions as a prelude and introduction to Parallelism in Verbal Art and Performance.  The first is to survey some of the basic ground that is covered or addressed in individual papers and discussions as a preliminary frame in which the papers can be approached and deliberated.  The second is to stimulate thinking about parallelism and ways to relate perspectives from the different approaches offered by different materials and produced by focus on parallelism of different types.

There are forms of scientific activity that are rarely practiced by sociolinguists, and one of them is the self-conscious construction of theory. Sociolinguists appear to share a self-perception of staunchly empirical analysts devoted to the rigorous empirical exploration of sociolinguistic details and the patterns in which they can be understood. In such exercises, new theoretical constructs, concepts and categories can be, and frequently are being, developed; but generally such constructs, concepts and categories are presented as valid within sociolinguistics only – their extrapolation towards more widely relevant social theory usually being left to others. 
The lead assumption in this essay is that sociolinguists are a specialized type of sociologist, who observe society through the lens of language and interaction. The latter is a sui generis sociological object with an unmatched immediacy and accuracy as to empirically gauging the dynamics of social life: any social event and environment is characterized by patterns of interaction that are specific to it, and changes in such environments are observable in interactional behavior long before they show up in statistics. In that sense, I see contemporary advanced sociolinguistics as an empirical fact-checker for other social sciences and humanities, and as a rich source of innovative, empirically grounded hypotheses (in other words, theories) of general relevance.
I shall offer two illustrations of the potential of contemporary sociolinguistics as a source for new theoretical directions in social science at large. First, I shall show how ongoing sociolinguistic research can shed new light on an old and persistent conceptual problem in sociology: that of delineating and defining social groups. The second proposal is related: in mainstream sociology (especially in the Durkheim-Parsons tradition), social integration is seen as crucial for understanding the development of societies and of social groups within them. Both the conceptualization of social groups and that of social integration can be significantly enhanced by drawing on recent insights from the sociolinguistic study of the online-offline interface.

A proposed genetic relationship between Basque (Vasconic) and the North Caucasian language family. | The story that emerges from the coordination of linguistic, archaeological, and genetic evidence involves farming colonies, spurred by the increase in population that results from agriculture, migrating in boats from Anatolia in search of new farming lands along the Mediterranean. These Neolithic farmers were acquainted with the cultivation of grain and pulse crops, kept small and large cattle and swine, and practiced dairying. They, or their descendants elsewhere along the Mediterranean coast, reached the coasts of France and Spain some 7500 - 7700 years ago.32  As they worked their way inland the colonists eventually mixed with the hunter-gatherer populations they encountered, many of whom they converted to the agricultural way of life; this is confirmed by recent genetic studies. “So who were the peoples who brought food production to western Europe in the seventh and sixth millennia BCE? The Basque language is the most likely candidate for a surviving descendant of the languages spoken by those early farmers.”  Cultural words cited indicate a well-developed agricultural economy among the proto-Euskaro-Caucasian speakers in the 7th millennium BCE.  “… Sardinians and Basques are the two modern populations with the highest genetic proportion of early farmer ancestry. … This suggests the Basque might be the remnant of a much larger Vasconic speaking area, suggesting a possibility that language family spread along with the first farmers.”

In his 1968 article, SJ Tambiah, building upon the work of Malinowski, focused on the special efficacy of words in ritual context. Using a ritual of exorcism from Ceylon as his example, Tambiah identified and elaborated on particular modes of speech that were employed by the specialist to empower ritual acts. This paper takes Tambiah's model and applies it to
The Bornless Ritual, a ritual of evocation designed and utilized by the Victorian Occult group The Golden Dawn, an organization founded in 1881 by S.L. Macgregor Mathers and William Wynn Westcott. In identifying and analyzing the verbal modalities of The Bornless Ritual, some fascinating insights into how the ancient practice of evocation was received and translated by early modern occultists can be discovered. Most notably, it illustrates more fully how The Bornless Ritual is a particular product of modernity.

This paper provides a worked exemplar of psychotherapy research using the approach of conversation analysis inspired discourse analysis (CA/DA), sometimes known as discursive psychology (Edwards & Potter, 1992; Potter, 2003; Potter & Wetherell, 1987). The aim of the paper is to explore the potential usefulness of discursive analysis for qualitative psychotherapy research within a relational centred ethos. The paper presents an analysis of extracts from a case of psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy based on Hobson’s (1985) conversational model. This model has a particular relational focus in assuming clients’ problems arise from relationship disturbances and that the therapeutic encounter is a vehicle for the manifestation, exploration, and modification of such problems. The model is conversational in that intervention consists of therapists’ use of strategies such as negotiation, metaphor, and development of a ‘common feeling language’...

Resumo:
O artigo investiga as transformações na abordagem que Umberto Eco dá a questão da interpretação na trajetória entre a Obra Aberta, na década de 60, para a ênfase nos limites interpretativos, a partir de meados dos anos 70.Nesta trajetória, o mago de Bolonha, parte de uma perspectiva fundada em Tomas de Aquino, dialogando com James Joyce, as vanguardas musicais, os estruturalismo e a semiótica de Peirce. O artigo mostra também como a perspectiva pragmática que Eco herda de Peirce formularia uma "metafísica detetivesca" centrada no conceito de abdução. O desenvolvimento do giro pragmático efetuado por Eco se distinguiria de modo forte da perspectiva neopragmatista de Richard Rorty.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the changes in Umberto Eco's approaches about the subject of the interpretation in the 60's, beginning with Open Work, culminating at the emphasis in the limits of interpretation, up to the mid 70's. The wizard of Bologna uses in his analyses the ideas from Thomas Aquinas, James Joyce, avant-garde music, structuralism and the semiotics of Peirce. This article also shows how the pragmatic approach that Eco inherits from Peirce would help him formulate an "investigator metaphysics" centered on the concept of abduction. The development of the pragmatist turn made by Eco differs strongly from Richard Rorty´s neo-pragmatism.

Applying a combination of ethnographic and discourse-centered approaches to an exploratory case study in Arusha, Tanzania, this paper examines how global discourses are locally (re)produced. By acquiring specialized knowledge that is circulating through handbooks, magazines, websites, and videos, Tanzanian students learn how to become professional “local” guides. During their training they are instructed, both implicitly and explicitly, how to use global discourses to represent and sell their natural and cultural heritage as authentically local. However, in the personal interaction with tourists, guides do not merely reproduce the narratives and practices they were taught at school but become themselves creative storytellers, often subtly questioning or contesting the normative templates.

No credible claims can be made that the role of language – specifically Malay – has been entirely overlooked by those studying conflict dynamics in South Thailand. Nevertheless, those concerned with religious factors dwarf the number of studies interrogating language issues. Without suggesting that language represents some sort of silver bullet solution to this complex conflict, I argue that anyone pursuing peaceful, political resolutions to Thailand's southern impasse must be more informed about language policy, monolingual mind-sets, and linguistic justice, namely how linguistic repertoires and linked to inequality. My interests in this paper are theoretical (rather than empirical). The first of this paper's two substantive sections describes the nature of Thailand's (diverse) linguistic landscape and how the language policies pursued by Bangkok resemble those of other states between South and Southeast Asia. In light of Bangkok's policies towards southern Malays resemble those that impacted Lao and Khmer-speaking Buddhists in the northeast provinces, I suggest that some dynamics in South Thailand need to be de-exceptionalized. In the section the follows, I interact with recent treatments of how language and religion are involved in constructions of ethno-nationalisms, and linguistic injustice that leads to inequality among linguist minorities. I conclude suggesting reasons for anyone seeking peaceful political resolutions in South Thailand – where a nation linguistic minority possesses close connections to the Malay cosmopolis – needing address the politically sensitive issue of Thailand's (deeply entrenched) monolingual mind-set and discriminatory language policy that has led to widespread language loss.

Metaphor is a central phenomenon of language,
and thus a central problem for natural language
understanding. Previous work on the analysis
of metaphors has identified which target concepts
are being thought of and described in
terms of which source concepts, but this is
not adequate to explain what motivates the use
of particular metaphors. This work proposes
the use of conceptual schemas to represent
the underspecified scenarios that motivate a
metaphoric mapping. To support the creation of
systems that can understand metaphors in this
way, we have created and are publicly releasing
a corpus of manually validated metaphor
annotations.

La comunicación entre el compositor de música y su audiencia no es en modo alguno directa. Está fuertemente intervenida por agentes que controlan aspectos críticos del proceso. Se produce así una compleja intermediación entre los interlocutores, que exige de la negociación y el diálogo a diferentes niveles para que la comunicación pueda consumarse efectivamente. Los nuevos significados que se generan por la intermediación no han sido tomados en cuenta en los estudios musicológicos tradicionales, que tienden a ver la interacción musical como algo dual, unívoco, lineal y simple. Proponemos en este trabajo acercarnos a este problema en el caso particular de la música de conciertos, a partir de las categorías de DISCURSO, DISEÑO, PRODUCCIÓN y DISTRIBUCIÓN que ofrecen Gunther Kress y Theo van Leeuwen (2001) para el análisis de los discursos multimodales.

ABSTRACT
Communication between composer and audience is not straight. This communication is strong biased by agents who control critic aspects of the process. This produces a complex intermediation among the interlocutors that requires of negotiation and dialog if communication should be effectively completed. The new significations generated by this process has not been taken in consideration by the traditional musicological studies, who considered the musical interaction as dual, univocal, lineal and simple. We propose in this paper to study the particular case of the concert music starting from the categories of DISCOURSE, DESIGN, PRODUCTION and DISTRIBUTION created by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen (2001) in order to analyze the multimodal discourses.

This paper explores the tension between local ethnic identities and pan-Maya language ideologies in the development of Standard Ixhil Mayan, a standardized variety recognized by the Guatemalan state and the Academy of Mayan Languages of Guatemala. Based on the analysis of interviews and publications in Ixhil, I examine how alternative ethnic identities are indexed through variations in orthographic conventions. As in other Mayan communities in the highlands of Guatemala, standardization is a contested field in which different notions of indigeneity are staged. I discuss the role of systemic tensions between the Maya movement and Ixhil communities and show how local dialectal stereotypes are being used to forge a pan-linguistic Ixhil super-ethnicity capable of buttressing local spaces of cultural sovereignty.

This essay was written for the "Legacies" issue of Comparative Critical Studies" [volume 7 (2010): 243-55] in which contemporary critics wrote about the current relevance of work by significant critics and theorists who had recently passed away. My angle on Wayne Booth is to imagine what he might have to say about the rhetoric of dialogue, and, in what I like to think of as a move that he might have made, I have written the piece in the form of a dialogue.

This paper offers an introduction to 'multiforms' as associated systems of verbal elements that develop in the memory of an individual and are used in text production. It examines these in the highly conservative kalevalaic mythological poetry of Finns and Karelians, where such multiforms become are sufficiently conservative in social circulation that they can become referentially meaningful. This paper looks briefly at general variation in production, variation by dialect, variation by situation and also the meaningful application of kalevalaic epic multiforms in exceptional contexts to produce new meanings

This paper presents some of the same information in the Finnish language "Multiformit kalevalamittaisessa epiikassa" (2010), but it presents a more general introduction to the poetic system and does not open formal typologies of multiforms in this poetic system.

Dall’osservazione dello spazio urbano della città di Roma, effettuato fra gennaio 2011 e giugno 2012, sono stati censiti e documentati 247 graffiti. Ciò che viene presentato in questo saggio è una prima analisi tematica del materiale raccolto. A questa centrale riflessione se ne accompagnano altre incentrate sul contributo che lo studio del graffitismo, osservato e documentato nello spazio urbano e linguistico della capitale italiana, può offrire relativamente a tematiche quali, per esempio, il rapporto diamesico fra lingua scritta e parlata, l’analisi delle varietà giovanili, le interferenze del dialetto e la creazione di neologismi.

Contemporary societies are strongly marked by a new complex web of relations, regulations and practices much as a response to new globalization processes along with the advent of digital media technologies. Human mobility, in particular, becomes a key element in the understanding of recent times as it has brought an unprecedented diversification of diversity that came to be known as superdiversity. As languages are a fundamental element in human relations, the emerging complexities in social interactions are to be taken into account in current research on meaning making processes in both online-offline communication. In this interview, Jan Blommaert and Massimiliano Spotti, from Tilburg University, the Netherlands, provide us with an acute analysis on the trajectories of Sociolinguistics. By claiming in favor of a paradigm shift in which language research would have to consider elements hitherto neglected by traditional language research, the authors' pioneering publications and local initiatives open up the terrain for the reinvention of language studies, policies, and practices.

The objective of this questionnaire is to elicit the data on Anthropo-linguistics which is closely associated with social-cultural anthropology.  As a field of interdisciplinary studies the, anthropo- linguistics is concerned with how a language influences the culture. This can include how the language makes impacts on social interactions, beliefs, cultural identity, and other important aspects of the culture. The main goal of linguisticanthropology or anthropo-linguistics is to better understand human culture. A linguistic anthropologist could ask many questions (https://explorable.com/linguistic-anthropology), including: 1. Why does one language or language variety show preference over another? 2. Why do different geographic regions have different language accents? 3. What types of values and ideologies are communicated through language? 4. Does language vary according to age, gender, beliefs, and other such socio-linguistic parameters?

The purpose of this study is to identify possible Session 1 indicators of end-of-treatment psychotherapy outcome using the framework of three types of interactional positioning; client's self-positioning, client's positioning between narrated self and different partners, and positioning between client and therapist. Three successful cases of eight-session psychodynamic–interpersonal (PI) therapy were selected on the basis of Beck Depression Inventory scores. One unsuccessful case was also selected against which identified patterns could be tested. The successful clients were more descriptive about their problems and demonstrated active rapport building, and the therapist used positionings expressed by the client to explore the positionings developed between them during therapy. The unsuccessful case was characterized by a lack of positive self-comment, minimization of agentic self-capacity, and empathy-disrupting narrative confusions. The authors conclude that the theory of interactional positioning is useful in identifying patterns worth exploring as early indicators of success in PI therapy.

The present investigation studies buying and selling encounters in a Mexican fruit and vegetable shop. It is a conversation-analytic study that shows aspects of the institutional character of these interactions, their overall organisation and sequential structure. It suggests that the core sequential structure of these encounters consists of two base adjacency pairs, buying (requesting-giving a product) and selling (requesting-giving money). In particular, the analysis describes the preparatory characteristics of the pre-expansions that precede the product request formulations, the linguistic composition and sequential positioning of request formulations, the insertions of the buying adjacency pair and the sequencing of the commercial exchange which is described as the climax of the institutional event. The designs of the first pair part of the selling adjacency pair and the product request formulations are presented as clear instances of the referential framework or common ground shared by seller and customer. This chapter chronicles the highly mediated event of the migration of a dock—unmoored by the Great East Earthquake and Tsunami from a small, Northern Japanese town where it was originally located—to Agate Beach, Oregon.  The displaced dock awed most everybody who encountered it, from ecologists to public officials, marine biologists to local tourists.  As the dock’s interlocutors (inter)scaled its heaviness, its height, its travel from afar, the enormity of the natural disaster that sent it on its way, and the foreign species attached to it, the dock came to project the awe of the unknown and portend the threat of a disastrous future.  As a result, the dock served a variety of expert and bureaucratic projects, including a quintessentially neoliberal form of risk management.  At the same time, many who encountered the dock claimed to have experienced intimate, sensorial connections with and through it, suggesting a scalar dynamic that we call de-escalation. Documenting the many socialities emerging from the prolifically scaled dock, the chapter shows that that scaling is a practice that can spawn a sense of intimacy and an ethic of interrelatedness at the very same time it serves projects that can differentially authorize, individuate and alienate.

This essay traces the roots of dialogue, identifies several over-arching tenets, and provides three ways that organizations can incorporate dialogue into their communication with publics.

The current political landscape seems rife with partisanship and toxic rhetoric. Although this is certainly nothing new, there has been an increase in rhetoric that suggests that citizens take up arms against the government. In the wake of the shooting at a political rally held by Representative Gabrielle Giffords, the media began asking whether violent rhetoric could lead to violent acts and politicians began to call for greater civility in political discourse. This essay examines the rhetoric of Sarah Palin and Sharron Angle to explore the rhetorical implications of a worldview that deeply distrusts the government and considers armed insurrection as an appropriate corrective to a government run amok

Questo corposo e articolato volume offre ai lettori specialisti, così come agli appassionati e agli interessati al patrimonio culturale regionale, un’ampia documentazione su “Sega la vecchia” raccolta nel corso di più di sessanta anni di attività di ricerca etnografica. Il “Sega la vecchia”, così come si configura nella parte occidentale del territorio regionale, consiste in una rappresentazione itinerante con questua, realizzata nel periodo di mezza Quaresima da squadre composte ciascuna da quindici-venti giovani contadini di sesso maschile: ogni squadra si sposta di casolare in casolare mettendo ripetutamente in scena il proprio spettacolo sino all’alba e ottenendo in cambio uova e vino. La rappresentazione, che dura circa mezz’ora, viene ripetuta di fronte a un pubblico costituito dagli abitanti del casolare e da eventuali vicini accorsi per l’occasione: senza importanti variazioni può essere eseguita anche una decina di volte nella stessa nottata e poi in altre tre o quattro notti consecutive o comunque ravvicinate. L’intreccio della rappresentazione ruota attorno alla scena in cui i due segantini “abbattono” e poi cercano di segare la Vecchia che, in alcuni casi, è allo stesso tempo una Quercia. Il Vecchio marito arriva cercando la consorte, poi si dispera nel ritrovarla in punto di morte, ferita e “segata”. In molti casi, dopo l’intervento delle forze dell’ordine e l’individuazione delle responsabilità, per curare la Vecchia moribonda, entrano in scena gli operatori sanitari (Farmacista, Medico, infermieri) accompagnati dal Somaro. Arriva poi il Prete che impartisce l’estrema unzione alla moribonda, la quale, in alcune varianti guarisce immediatamente e inizia a ballare con gli altri personaggi, in altre viene presa e trascinata via da “Maravalle”, il Diavolo.

Sin dall’inizio delle sue attività, nell’autunno del 2008, la Scuola di specializzazione in Beni demoetnoantropologici dell’Università degli Studi di Perugia (in convenzione con le università di Firenze e di Siena) ha deciso di impegnare parte delle sue forze in un lavoro collettivo di ricerca che potesse comunicare il senso e gli scopi della sua necessaria presenza nella realtà regionale umbra. In relazione alla ratifica da parte del Parlamento italiano nel settembre 2007 della “Convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage” adottata dall’UNESCO a Parigi nell’ottobre 2003, nonché al più recente testo del “Codice dei beni culturali e del paesaggio”, la Scuola ha ritenuto opportuno realizzare – proprio per far comprendere concretamente l’importanza che riveste il lavoro etnografico e antropologico nella individuazione e nella documentazione delle peculiarità presenti all’interno dei diversi contesti culturali – un’opera che riuscisse a trattare, con criteri scientifici e in modo esaustivo, uno di quei beni culturali immateriali che costituiscono l’oggetto della Convenzione. La scelta è caduta su “Sega la vecchia”, sia per la presenza di una ricca e articolata documentazione negli archivi della Sezione antropologica del Dipartimento Uomo & Territorio, sia perché questa forma di rappresentazione teatrale itinerante con questua è stata sicuramente uno dei fenomeni più rilevanti, complessi, dinamici e profondi, in cui si dispiega, con straordinaria immediatezza, il ricco humus culturale delle classi subalterne rurali nella nostra regione. Ne è risultato un volume di 1536 pagine, articolato in tre tomi, di cui due testuali con trascrizioni linguistiche, trascrizioni musicali, saggi interpretativi, schede e commenti e uno fotografico che raccoglie 284 scatti effettuati dal 1958 a oggi. All’interno del cofanetto è inoltre presente un DVD multimediale che contiene un cospicuo corpus di materiali audio-visivi.

This article is an analysis of a high school geometry teacher’s gesture and embodied social action in the context of classroom instruction, and its role in the communication of an implicit theory of the ontological status of mathematical knowledge. In  particular, I argue that the teacher’s bodily performance in the classroom setting communicates the Platonic position of abstract-realism—that mathematical entities are ontologically real abstractions—which is associated with the high epistemological authority and social efficacy of mathematics. Thus, in addition to the teacher’s use of language to reference mathematical knowledge, I document her patterns of embodied social action, which communicate an additional and ideologically specific theory about the ontological status of the items thus referenced. I propose the concept of a metaphor of participation—an iconic projection based on the pattern of bodily participation in the speech event—as a tool to theorize the bodily communication of ideologies.

La théorie de la littérature est l'étude savante de la littérature en tant que phénomène culturel. Il s'agit d'une discipline qui relève à la fois de la linguistique et de l'esthétique. La théorie du langage littéraire est parfois désignée sous le terme de poétique.

Whilst there exists a considerable body of research documenting heterosexual couples' use of donor sperm, relatively little is known about the experiences of lesbian recipients of donor sperm and the men who donate to them. Moreover, in all aspects of donor conception there is ongoing debate over what constitutes children's 'best interests', with this being most problematic in the unregulated private sector (of which lesbian use of donor sperm from gay men constitutes the largest portion). This paper presents narratives of a sample of 16 gay men and one heterosexual man who had donated or who were in the process of donating sperm to lesbian recipients. Specifically, the paper focuses on the ways in which the majority of the men elaborated a narrative in which their relationship to the birth mother was 'heterosexualised', a narrative that functioned to attribute to them a considerable role in determining the 'best interests' of donor--conceived children. The paper concludes by providing suggestions for legislation and policy stemming from the findings, and recommends that greater attention be paid to the voices of donor--conceived children.

This essay clarifies the concept of dialogue in public relations. As public relations theory and research move toward a two-way relational communication model, many scholars and practitioners are increasingly using the terms "dialogic" and "dialogue" to describe ethical and practical approaches to public relations. The concept of dialogue is deeply rooted in philosophy and relational communication theory. Its inclusion in the public relations vocabulary is an important step toward understanding how organizations can build relationships that serve both organizational and public interests. This essay traces the roots of dialogue, identifies several over-arching tenets, and provides three ways that organizations can incorporate dialogue into their communication with publics.

A Cultural Humility Approach to Digital Storytelling for First-Generation College Students research paper  will explore the impact of a social justice pedagogical curriculum program design for a Digital Story Telling (DST) curriculum program design which involves developing the cultural tradition of storytelling with digital animation to meet the intersecting needs of traditionally-aged (e.g. 18-29 years), First-Generation College Students (FGCS) at San Francisco State University, during their first-year experience, sixteen-week General Education
segment requirement; the DST will be comprised of four-weeks out of a sixteen week first year  experience class (e.g. Humanities 225).  Finally, in  keeping with  Tinto’s (1997) classrooms as communities, the ultimate goal of the DST program is to assess whether the DST program’s effectiveness in improving students’ (1) sense of belonging, (2) perceived social support, and (3) academic self-efficacy (Tinto, p. 1).  From a personal and artistic point of view; I posit that the efficacy of DST praxis illuminates and reframes a student learner’s academic self-efficacy, can foster an awakened spiritual experience when classrooms as communities (Tinto, 1997) are perceived as effective  social support systems, and encourage one to get-out-of-their-head for a bit and follow their  intuition, thus to become consummate musical conductors of their lives. 

Reframing and painting one’s personal and powerful digital story creates an affirming narrative identity through exploring a sense of belonging and by understanding the colorful uniqueness of self.  We are all artists in some manner unique to each of us as humans, especially culturally competent ones, can  support and encourage FGCS to become the Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s (American poet, social  activist) of their own lives.

THE UKRAINIAN ENCLAVE IN BOSNIA AND HERCEGOVINA:
THE FIELD RESEARCH OF THE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

The Ukrainian Diaspora in Bosnia and Hercegovina represents an extremely interesting phenomenon among the Slavic migrant communities because they live in linguistic and religious enclave. The Ukrainians begin to settle on the Balkan Peninsula in the 19th century from Halyčyna. We don’t have precise data on the number of Ukrainians in Bosnia and Hercegovina. Unfortunately, this data are not available. The Ukrainian settlements are located in the communities of Prnjavor,
Prijedor, Laktaši, Banja Luka and to a lesser extent in the communities of Čelinac, Bosanska Gradiška, Srbac and Derventa. Among the publications devoted to Ukrainians in the Republika Srpska, there are no works on linguistics and folk culture. The researchers mainly investigate the historical aspect of migration. In order to fill the gap in 2016 a field research of Ukrainians living in communities of Banja Luka, Prijedor and Prnjavor was conducted. We used the method of semistructured
interviews and conducted interviews with 16 informants in Ukrainian and Serbian languages. During the interviews we spoke with interlocutors on the ethno-linguistic (Christmas, Easter, Midsummer) and sociolinguistic topics (the study of the Serbian language, the use of the Ukrainian language in everyday communication, the transmission of the language to the younger generation). The Ukrainian names of holidays and ceremonies were registered, for example, the Baptism of Jesus (ijordáns’k’i s”v’áta, jordán). Special attention was paid to the perception of the
traditions of the Serbs, Croats, and Bosniaks among the Ukrainian community. The analysis will allow to conclude on the preservation of the national culture and Ukrainian language.

A mainstream narrative in the academy casts hidebound authority as the enemy of evidence and, in many cases, the truth. In this review, I argue for an ethnographic and linguistic approach to evidence and authority as communicative practices that are not inherently opposed but rather inseparably intertwined. For ethnographers, authority can usefully be viewed as authorizing acts (recognizing that the act includes the receiver), and evidence can be thus treated as a kind of authorization, an act of providing evidence. Viewed in this more dynamic framework, authority and evidence become observable practices in which actors deploy cultural forms-performances, experiments, verb tenses, quotes, narratives, pronouns-to persuade, argue, confirm, and mediate social and cultural relations. Conceived as communicative events, authority and evidence are characteristics of not only the activities of the people we study but our own professional interactions as well , Pratt 1986.

In the literature on professional international consulting, the use of a foreign language (such as English) is typically cast as problematic and as an obstacle to successful intervention. In this article, we present evidence to the contrary, showing  that  conducting  a  specific  form  of  professional  consulting  called ‘supervision’ in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) can be beneficial rather than detrimental to the outcome. We analyze data of one international supervision event using the ethnographic framework of ‘nexus analysis’ (Scollon and Scollon 2004). Nexus analysis operates by investigating how macro-level societal discourses (e.g. professional discourses of supervision) and cultural tools (e.g. the use of ELF) interplay in and mediate local moments of interaction. In our case, using ELF in international supervision can slow down the process, which  in  turn  is  actually  an  important  intervention  strategy  in  supervision because  it  facilitates  reflection  work  and  is  thus  conducive  to  positive  outcomes. We argue that nexus analysis is well poised to investigate the effects of such interplay of ELF use and societal ( professional) discourses on the ground. Further, conducting studies that show the benefits of ELF use in supervision can ultimately engender more positive attitudes among professionals in this regard.
