International Research Collaborations

The aim of this study is to analyse a very common phenomenon in Malaysia, namely multilingualism, and provide evidence of how multilingualism could enhance the relationship between the ASEAN countries and South Korea. A survey of 50 Malaysian students was conducted to assess their proficiency in and knowledge of ASEAN and Korean languages, and a series of interviews was conducted with the same group of students. The results of the survey showed that 92% of respondents were multilingual, able to speak Malay, English, and at least one other language, indicating that multilingualism is a widespread phenomenon here in Malaysia. The majority of the respondents agreed that multilingualism improved their problem-solving skills, led to greater academic success, boosted career prospects, helped them understand cultural differences, enhanced their self-esteem, and expanded their social networks. Normalising multilingualism could be a simple way of enhancing the relationship between the ASEAN countries and South Korea. This can be achieved through the exchange of expertise, student exchange programmes, and through educational institutes. It is hoped that this study will provide policymakers with foundational ideas on how multilingualism could bridge the gap and enhance relationships between countries.

Open Educational Resources (OER) have emerged as a dynamic and democratising influence, reshaping how people can enhance their skills. This overview delves into Skill Development through Open Educational Resources, shedding light on these resources' profound impact on education and workforce readiness. This paper examines the importance of continuously improving skills in today's rapidly evolving job market and the future prospects of open educational resources for skill development, considering the historical development of OER initiatives in India and skill development. It also emphasises the shifting demands of the modern workforce with the advantages of using OER for skill development, including affordability, accessibility, and flexibility. Additionally, it provides detailed case studies and examples that demonstrate the positive impact of OER on skill development in various settings, with a specific focus on the potential of adaptive learning technologies within OER. This paper also focuses on the challenges in sustaining OER and strategies to overcome these challenges.

This chapter examines the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence on Open, Distance and eLearning (ODeL) in the English-speaking West African context. Given the heavy reliance of ODeL on technology to bridge the distance between learners and tutors compared to campus-based higher institutions, it seems tenable to expect that the ubiquity of AI would exert a significant impact on ODeL both from the perspectives of lecturers and learners. In the West Africa subregion, Nigeria alone has five ODL-focused institutions, with at least three others existing in other English-speaking West African countries, in addition to tens of campus-based institutions that have an ODL department, centre or institute, usually referred to as dual-mode institutions.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the evolution and integration of AI in higher education institutions in West Africa generally and ODeL institutions specifically to investigate the awareness and utilisation of higher education lecturers of AI in their academic and professional work. The study sought to provide empirical insight into what West African academics understand AI to be and how they apply the various AI tools and facilities in their professional engagements.

Schools are transformed when children actively participate in school's planning and management in collaboration with teachers, SMC members and parents. Through active participation and leadership they acquire rich experience, knowledge, capacities, values and dispositions as desired under the NEP, 2020.

The author played an instrumental role in promoting democratically elected Baal Sansads in around 55,000 schools of Jharkhand. Schools have seen huge changes in all areas of development and have empowered students in a significant manner.

The degree to which Chinese higher education has maintained some institutional diversity is quite remarkable, in spite of pressures to conform to the model of a global research university. University presidents are naturally concerned about their institutions' locations in global-ranking systems, and national policy has supported significant efforts to enable universities to achieve world-class quality and standing. The current work addresses one of the key building blocks towards an improved understanding of flood processes and associated changes in flood characteristics and regimes in Europe: the development of a comprehensive, extensive European flood database. The presented work results from ongoing cross-border research collaborations initiated with data collection and joint interpretation in mind. A detailed account of the current state, characteristics and spatial and temporal coverage of the European Flood Database, is presented. At this stage, the hydrological data collection is still growing and consists at this time of annual maximum and daily mean discharge series, from over 7000 hydrometric stations of various data series lengths. Moreover, the database currently comprises data from over 50 different data sources. The time series have been obtained from different national and regional data sources in a collaborative effort of a joint European flood research agreement based on the exchange of data, models and expertise, and from existing international data collections and open source websites. These ongoing efforts are contributing to advancing the understanding of regional flood processes beyond individual country boundaries and to a more coherent flood research in Europe.

As a common trend in neoliberal higher education systems, the New Zealand government recently announced that it would remove the social sciences and humanities from the Marsden Fund in 2025 to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) more in order to rebuild the economy. The decision has sparked a range of reactions from various sectors, which generally ask that the government reconsider its decision. I draw from the public reactions and interviews with 26 academics and senior academic research administrators to argue that the impact of government funding cuts for humanities and social sciences on society may be huge if the New Zealand government does not reconsider its decision. The STEM subjects are undoubtedly crucial for the economic growth of a country. However, measuring success by mainly economic contributions may be disastrous because there is much more to success than just attaining economic targets. The humanities and social sciences also contribute to the knowledge economy by teaching society about democracy, philosophy of science, ethics and values that allow peaceful coexistence and make a country prosperous. Therefore, investment in one should not lead to the neglect of the other.

A five-day international workshop was recently convened at the Universite ´des Sciences et Techniques de Masuku in Gabon to enhance international collaboration among Central African, US and European scientists, conservation professionals and policy makers. The overall aims of the workshop were to: (1) discuss emerging priorities in biodiversity and conservation genetics research across Central Africa, and (2) create new networking opportunities among workshop participants. Here we provide a brief overview of the meeting, outline the major recommendations that emerged from it, and provide information on new networking opportunities through the meeting web site.

This paper uses social network analysis to evaluate how the formation of an interdisciplinary brain research institute affected interaction and collaboration among neuroscientists at one Canadian university. The research institute, formed in 2004, has about 100 members representing ten different departments across the university campus. We conducted a whole network survey of the members in 2010, asking them to report on their professional interactions (advice seeking, co-supervising, co-teaching, co-authorship, holding grants, and organizing conferences together) with each of the other members during the five years before and the five years since the foundation of the Institute. Whole network measures examined include density, isolates, average degree and multiplexity. We compared these measures over time. Our findings indicate that professional interactions among the neuroscientists have increased since the founding of the Institute. The main networks of collaborators are now clustered around the three organizational themes of the Institute, which were formalized in 2010. We also examined how individual-level characteristics of the scientists affected professional interaction. We show that departmental co-membership, office co-location and Institute themes are all significant predictors of interaction among neuroscientists at this university since the foundation of the Institute. Social network analysis is a useful tool for evaluating the impact of the establishment of an interdisciplinary institute on scientists' relationships.

Throughout the last 25 years, the ethnography network,
formally EERA Network 19, has been an important meeting
point for educational ethnographers from all over Europe. As
the only network with a dedicated methodological focus, we
aim at enabling and linking method and content-related
discussions, at creating a space that inspires through
experiences of di#erence, and at facilitating exchange
amongst network members. Exchanges generated through our
network have resulted in friendships that lasted for decades,
alongside many other project-based collaborations, and
yielded important impulses for current research in educational
ethnography. In the following sections, three long-term

Transition to Careers S tudents attending graduate school have made a commitment to pursuing careers in their chosen field. But for underrepresented minorities, attrition continues to occur throughout graduate school and during critical career transitions. The six presentations summarized in this chapter examine interventions designed to reduce attrition and position young scientists to have productive and rewarding careers.

- Geomagnetic and gravity surveys at the surface have been coupled to explore the possibility of concealed kimberlite/lamproite pipes under the sedimentary cover of the Kaimur Group of rocks of the Vindhyan Supergroup. A bipolar high magnetic primary source, based on the airborne magnetic survey, was confirmed by surface-magnetic and gravity survey of the area beneath sandstone at an estimated depth of about 150 m.Finally, based on the geological and geophysical interpretation of the area and the results obtained from the analysis, to confirm the possibility and determine the geometry and size of concealed diamondiferous kimberlite/lamproite pipes under the platformal marine sediments of the Vindhyans, a detailed investigation is warranted from the
rock samples obtained from the exploratory boreholes.

Por outro lado, no entanto, há muitos autores que questionam se as tecnologias interativas realmente incentivam a democracia ou o mercado, empoderam o cidadão ou fortalecem o consumidor. Neste contexto, ainda temos pouca informação sobre as motivações que impulsionam os cidadãos a participarem ativamente por meio dos mecanismos que os meios de comunicação tornam disponíveis para eles em seus próprios sites ou redes sociais. Há uma falta semelhante de informações sobre o papel que os usuários atribuem ao seu envolvimento no funcionamento dos meios de comunicação e se contribui para melhorar a sua função democrática. ABSTRACT-Audience participation, in any of its forms and names (public journalism, citizen journalism, participatory journalism, UGC), appears to revitalise democracy, thanks to the opportunities for public debate opened up by information and communications technology. On the other hand, however, there are many authors who question whether interactive technologies really encourage democracy or the market, empower the citizen or strengthen the consumer. In this context, we still have little information on the motivations that drive citizens to actively participate through the mechanisms that the media make available to them on their own websites or through social networks. There is a similar lack of information on the role that users attribute to their involvement in the functioning of the media and whether it contributes to improving their democratic function. This article aims to shed some light on this subject.

Previous studies have pointed at participation in the European Framework Programs for Research and Innovation as elite driven, foremost by large and prestigious universities. By analysing all proposals (including rejected proposals) rather than funded projects only, we have investigated whether such findings also hold for success in proposal decisions. We study which university characteristics that are associated with successful proposal outcomes. Our study finds that university size is indeed an important driver for success, but independent of size; it is essential with a relative high volume of proposals. Those HEIs who submit relatively many proposals compared to their size performs better; especially in the ERC. What are important success criterions vary across thematic areas and to some extent over time, reflecting changing goals of the EU programs. Success is based on complex mechanisms, where many universitiesirrespective of sizefor different reasons perform well in the framework programs.

The aim of this article is to discuss the relationship between disciplinary diversity (multidisciplinarity) and the performance of researchers, exploring the moderating role of social capital. The article contributes to the literature explaining the internal processes of multidisciplinary research units and how they affect the scientific performance of researchers. Furthermore, the article explores the potential moderating role of social capital and how relational dynamics can mitigate the potential problems associated with multidisciplinarity. To test the hypotheses proposed, we performed a quantitative study based on a sample of 155 researchers in the field of academic management. Multiple regression analysis was used in the empirical analysis. The findings suggest that a positive relationship between researchers’ performance and multidisciplinarity exists (an inverted U-shaped relationship). This chapter sets the contextual, conceptual, and methodological scenes for the book and presents its aims. Although its timing coincides with the significant signposts of five decades of Australia-China diplomatic relations and four decades of Australian studies in China, this book is more than commemorative or ceremonial. It has a self-driven mission to understand, inform, and advance the Australian studies community in China—an intellectual community that has explicit attributes of its own in its emergence, evolution, operation, and impact. This book employs both inside-out and outside-in approaches, bringing a diversity of experiences and actors/agents into an interactive dialogue. A pioneering effort of its kind, the book reflects on the past, examines the present, and imagines the future. Notably, it engages both leading and emerging scholars and employs new perspectives not only to refresh an understanding of the community but also to inject new dynamism into it to promote paradigmatic changes.

Since the mid-twentieth century, higher education systems worldwide went through huge transformations as a consequence of massification and the recognition of knowledge as key for economic development. The emergence of new teaching modes, the intensity of research, and performativity and accountability pressures impacted directly on academic work and, as a result, on academic working conditions. In this article, we examine the changes that the Argentine professoriate has experienced in recent decades. We argue that the process of fragmentation of the academic profession presents particularities in regard to global trends. We analyze the current state and evolution of the academic workforce in public universities by focusing on different aspects related to its academic profile: gender, training, working conditions, employers, positions, types of contracts, academic practice, perceptions
about the career, preferences, and job stress/satisfaction. To achieve this, we have relied on data from the Academic Profession in the Knowledge-Based Society (APIKS) survey.

Solving publicly important issues asks for the development of sociotechnical approaches, which demands collaboration between researchers with different perspectives, values, and interests. In these complex interdisciplinary collaborations, the course of communication is of utmost importance, including the moments when people, consciously or not, keep silent. In 2012, an interdisciplinary group of water management engineers and scientists collaborated to explore how the university's separate water management research fields could fit better in today's socio-technical trends. Studying the interactional process revealed that during the collaboration many issues were not said by various parties at various times. Results show that, in particular, engineers and scientists stayed silent to secure group performance, to keep disagreements from surfacing, and manage conflicts of interest in the bargaining process. Although silence served various interactional functions, it also shaped the course of interaction in ways that were not intended, resulting in the development of a latent conflict. It is concluded that the concept of silence adds a relevant dimension to our understanding of interaction among engineers and scientists participating in interdisciplinary collaboration that is currently absent in existing literature on scientific collaboration.

Over the past decades, the internationalization of higher education in China has had considerable achievements, and has contributed to the current transformation of the Chinese system into one of the largest and arguably most promising ones in the world. Setting the Chinese experience in an international context, this article assesses the latest developments. It argues that China's internationalization of higher education is part of a much larger process of cultural integration between China and the West. From this perspective, it concludes that although China's recent developments deserve to be noted, China has a considerable distance to go before its aspirations to create truly world-class universities are fulfilled.

This article presents findings on international research collaboration from a National Science Foundation-funded study with 83 faculty in science and engineering (S&E) who returned to India after studying and working in the United States. These faculty members were brought up in the Indian socio-cultural context, but they were professionalized in the scientific culture of Western academia. When they returned to India to take a faculty position, they knew collaborators in the US with desired skills, including their advisors. Yet, returned Indian migrant faculty face significant challenges in establishing successful international research collaboration with their American peers. Interestingly, this is not the case with collaborators from Europe and other parts of the world with whom they had little connection before moving to India. Findings show some inequities that exist between scientists and engineers in the US and India that pertain to resources and attitudes towards collaboration.

Within the new world scenario, the internationalization of science, technology and innovation represents a fast track for the development of nations and the solution of the global challenges posed by the 2030 Agenda. The above reflects on the importance of science and technology as determining factors to promote sustainable development and especially to overcome any scenario of health and economic crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has promoted the creation of programs that are in favor of investment in human resources and infrastructure to strengthen local capacities, long-term financing for the development of scientific and technological projects, as well as the implementation of new mechanisms that favor the institutionalization of science, technology and innovation policies.

he demand for higher education in countries around the world has never been higher. This increase in education levels has generated many benefits to society, including more knowledgeable citizens, advanced economies, and enhanced longevity. We have also seen countries and universities invest heavily in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), including health (STEM+) research and scientific output. This has resulted in unexpected pure exponential growth in science production around the world (see Figure 1). Increased competition, as well as boundary-spanning collaborations, drive unprecedented scientific advancement and technological innovation. In a book entitled The Century of Science: The Global Triumph of the Research University, we explore global scientific developments from the early 20th century to today. University-based research, especially, has risen globally to become the driving force of science production in STEM+ fields. Universities, with their multiple missions of research, teaching, and public service, are uniquely positioned to contribute to scientific output while simultaneously producing the next generation of scientists.

The International Energy Agency's Demand Side Management Programme Task 24 1 , called 'Closing the Loop: Behaviour Change in DSM-From Theory to Practice' has been working with 100s of experts in over 20 countries for the last 3 years to crack the toughest of nuts-how to turn behaviour change theory into actionable practice. We have encountered a variety of obstacles on our almost 3-year journey so far, but the biggest one was undoubtedly the silo nature and in-built areas of conflict between different players in the energy system, including the different research disciplines studying behaviour. Our largest workshop to date, kindly sponsored by the UKERC Meeting Place, was held in Oxford in September 2012. We now fondly remember it as our 'baptism by fire'-where the issues mentioned above became glaringly obvious and our proposed method of attack was the one being attacked (rightly so, and it gave us the impetus to modify and improve it). However, we also stumbled across the solution when dealing with so many experts from different disciplines and sectors, thanks to a collective desire for a more constructive way to discuss behaviour change after 1.5 days of criticism and debate. We would like to tell some of these different types of stories and how they can be used successfully to impart the important message that the energy system is after all, all about human beings.

The International Energy Agency's Demand-Side Management Programme's Task 24 aims to turn behaviour change theory into pilot projects. One obstacle to delivering successful behaviour change interventions concerns the silos between different stakeholders in the energy system and their limited collaboration. To facilitate multistakeholder collaboration and co-design of better behavioural interventions and pilots, Task 24 focuses on participatory, shared learning in facilitated workshop settings. Storytelling is used as an overarching 'translation tool' between invited stakeholders from different sectors and research disciplines. A story spine loosely based on a fairy tale structure was used to collect over 160 stories from energy experts from over 20 countries. In this paper, I focus on the process of storytelling using such a story spine, and, to a lesser extent, the participants (the storytellers) and the product (the stories).
