Higher Education Leadership

This report presents the findings from an 18-month, Leadership Foundation funded, research project on collective leadership in UK Higher Education and its development. The overall aim of this project was to develop recommendations on how leadership and leadership development could be enhanced, particularly in terms of encouraging collective engagement with the leadership process. In order to do this we: (a) explored what is understood by the term ‘leadership’ by various institutional actors; (b) investigated the processes by which leadership is distributed at different levels within universities (i.e. school, faculty, executive group, etc.); and (c) examined the way(s) in which leadership development (in its broadest sense) contributes towards improved leadership capability for individuals, groups and the wider organisation.

Bu kitap; duygusal ve davranışsal bozukluklara sahip öğrenciler hakkında bilgi sahibi olmak isteyen sınıf öğretmenleri, özel eğitim öğretmenleri ve alanda çalışan uzmanlar için hazırlanmış giriş niteliğinde bir uygulama kitabıdır. Her bir bozukluğun nedeni, tanımlanması, güncel araştırmalar ışığında verilmeye çalışılmış ve okul ortamındaki pratik uygulamalarla da anlatım zenginleştirilmiştir. Bunlara ek olarak belirli bir bozukluğun tüm yönlerine ilişkin temel yaklaşımla birlikte bilimsel olarak geliştirilmiş müdahele yöntemleri de verilmeye çalışılmıştır.

Bu kitabın alanda yeni çalışmaya başlayan öğretmenler kadar güncel verilerle desteklenen tanı koyma ve müdahele stratejilrine önem vermesi nedeniyle alanda uzun süredir çalışmakta olan öğretmenlere ve uzmanlara da yararlı olacağını düşünmekteyiz.

This report is the outcome of a study carried out for the European Delega- tion to Russia on EU-Russia Joint Programmes. The assignment began in January 2013 and will be completed in October 2014, with a conference in Moscow to discuss the study’s findings with Russian and European uni- versities, as well as senior experts on Joint Programmes.
The overall objective of the study was to contribute to the development of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and to the implementation of the Bologna Process within the framework of the EU/Russia’s Common Space on Science and Education.
The specific objectives were to complete the study carried out in 2010 by updating the information gathered and producing a catalogue on as many existing EU-Russian Joint Programmes as possible confirmed by both EU and Russian Institutions. The study was meant to examine the extent to which Joint Programmes feature in the internationalisation strategies of Russian universities and look at the degree of institutional support avail- able for their development. Benefits and challenges should be identified.
This report is our account of the study’s findings, best practices and les- sons learnt on Joint Programmes between higher education institutions in Russia and in the EU. It is complemented by a catalogue on examples of EU-Russia Joint Programmes.
We would like to thank the EU Delegation to Russia, the Ministry of Education and Science in Russia, the National TEMPUS office in Russia (currently National Erasmus+ Office), and representatives from EU Mem- bers States in Russia for their support in answering our questions. Kitabın her bölümünde, ilk olarak ruhsal bozukluklarla ilgili vakalar sunulmakta, daha sonra bozuklukların klinik tanıları yapılmakta ve DSM-IV-TR’den farklı olan DSM-5’te yapılan değişikliklere yer verilmektedir. Ayrıca, DSM-5’teki tanı ölçütleri, bozuklukların etiyolojisi ve epidemiyolojisi, bozukluklar üzerinde kalıtımın ve çevrenin etkileri, biyolojik ve sosyal ve kültürel etkiler, en güncel araştırmalardan elde edilen verilerle harmanlanarak sunulmaktadır. Ruhsal bozuklukların tedavisinde etkili olacak terapi yaklaşımları ve ilaçla yapılan tedaviler hakkında da bilgiler veren kitap, sahip olduğu zengin içeriği ile eşsiz bir kaynaktır.
Anormal Psikoloji kitabının; profesyoneller ve öğrenciler için önemli bir rehber olacağına, yardıma ihtiyaç duyan insanların sorunlarının çözümüne, ruhsal bozuklukların tanı ve tedavisinde önemli katkılar sağlayacağına inanıyoruz.

Universities play a central role in addressing key challenges of social, economic and environmental sustainability. For this role to be delivered effectively it is critical to identify not only what strategies are most productive but also how to ensure they are successfully led and implemented. This project seeks to apply the proven change leadership framework developed in the ALTC's 'Learning Leaders in Times of Change' project to the distinctive area of effective turnaround leadership for sustainability in higher education. The project is being undertaken in a collaboration between the University of Western Sydney, the Australian National University, the Sustainable Futures Academy and the University of Gloucestershire. It will produce a validated change leadership framework for building Education for Sustainability (EfS) successfully into the core activities of our universities, as well as a package of leadership development resources for use in individual recruitment, promotion, development and performance management activities. It will also document a range of successful practice models.

This paper presents the implementation of a professional student development program within the Department of Campus Safety at Azusa Pacific University. The goal of this program is to utilize academic bridging to bring each student employee's academic discipline to bear on their work responsibilities. Students are mentored by their supervisors as they engage this opportunity. These mentoring relationships empower those students to problem solve and apply insight from their chosen major in their individual student employment setting.

Good afternoon, honoured VIP guests…. My name is Catherine Harper, Dean of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, here at University of Portsmouth. It's a very great pleasure for me to welcome you here on this very special day for us. To welcome you firstly to this VIP Innovation Launch Pad for the Faculty, where we commit to a refreshed faculty agenda on Research and Innovation in the Creative and Cultural Industries -that is, to the development of creative solutions to real world problems, and to the application of the results of creative enquiry and skills development in prototypes, conceptual scenarios, simulations, and test--beds leading to commercially--successful and essentially new knowledge. In this Launch Pad environment we want to provide opportunity for informal discussion and consideration of that agenda in anticipation of the subsequent showcase of our graduating students' work throughout the building. So a warm welcome to our VIP guests, our partners from industry and community, the employers who engage with our students and our research, those from the creative, cultural, commercial and digital sectors; from secondary, further and higher education; from business; from the Royal Navy and land and air forces, from our city council and our regional networks… The range of creative disciplines represented here is unique in its breadth of subjects, and associated expertise, creativity, pedagogy, applied and yet to be applied research, and its entrepreneurial approach to academic engagement. Here in CCI, we situate the distinctive discipline clusters of design (architecture, fashion, textiles, graphics, illustration and photography) alongside those of the creative and digital technologies (TV broadcasting and film production; computer games, digital animation and media; and the technologies of motion capture, sound, virtual reality and special effects), and we enliven these through the performance of creative and imaginative writing, drama, theatre, music, and the scholarly pursuit of disciplinary knowledge. I've come direct from HMS Warrior, where our TV and Broadcasting students kicked off their 8 hour live outside broadcast, connecting now with the rest of the Faculty, and a great example of how authoritative and powerful discipline roots allow us to conjure an environment that ignites and inspires the alchemical reactions of interdisciplinary enquiry, the magical novelty of creative collaboration, and the electrifying generation of new thinking, innovation and commercial potency. Here in CCI, our students 'get it'. They already understand the interconnectedness of research enquiry, creative--risk--taking, distinctive articulation, critical evaluation, and the production of work that both challenges them as creatives and brings innovative practice and product to the commercial sphere. They know that they are entering creative industries that generate in the UK 77 billion pounds per annum for the national economy, and that connect a global economy and international currency that is immeasurable. So when, for example, our final year games and digital media students last week presented work they had produced for the Royal Navy's Future Training Unit to senior naval personnel and commercial partners that included BAE Maritime Services, Bohemia Simulations, Babcock and Hampshire Police Forensics, our students 'got' that their production of digital assets to modernize Naval training methods, including the use of 'games engines' to simulate ships in service, smartphone applications for Royal Marines School of Music training and online learning materials for Naval personnel inductions… they 'got' that this is 'real world' serious research in action, contributing to the pipeline of knowledge development, innovation production, national economic growth, and the international brand of UK plc.

This opening commentary presents the framework, rationale and discussion at the 2014 annual ECCSSA conference on new frontiers and models—providing continuity in dialogue from prior conferences and building on the prior year’s conference theme on ushering in the renaissance. Discussion focuses on a broad set of issues confronting the American society and the world. Further, the commentary delineates the issues, innovations and bold new ideas on the horizon from research, current and proposed models. These ideas come from across disciplines and reflect on the role of all disciplines, education and the social and behavioral sciences in higher education.

Ünlü eğitim psikoloğu Robert Slavin'in Eğitim Psikolojisi kitabının onuncu baskısı, kuramı uygulamaya aktarma konusunda önemli bir eksikliği gidermekte ve öğretmenlerin sınıfta ihtiyaç duyabilecekleri alanlarda uygulayabilecekleri bilgileri içermektedir.

Kitap, yansıtıcı ve bilinçli bir öğretmenin uygulayabileceği en yeni araştırmaları sunarak, bilinçli öğretmen üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Slavin'e göre bilinçli öğretmen, uygulamasını devamlı surette yansıtan ve bu uygulamaların öğrencileri nasıl etkilediği hakkında net bir düşünceye dayalı olarak öğretim kararları veren kişidir.

Bu kitapta okuyucular alanda önemli ve yeni ortaya çıkan bazı konular ile karşılaşmaktadır. Dokuz bölümden oluşan bu kitapta tedavi kapsamlı olarak ele alınmıştır. Genel çerçevede, olumsuz duygularla başa çıkmanın daha uyumsal yollarını öğreten becerilerin kazanımı ile tıkanırcasına yeme ve boşaltmayı durdurma hedefine ulaşma yolu adım adım çizilmiştir. Blumia nervoza ve tıkanırcasına yeme bozukluğuna sahip insanların karılaştığı sorunlar ve mevcut tedavi yöntemleri ele alınarak okuyucuya genel bir bakış açısı kazandırılır. Standart terapinin detaylı bir şekilde tanıtımından sonra bunun adaptasyonunun neden gerekli olduğu, adapte etmenin mantığı mevcut kanıtlar ile sunulur. Daha sonra, tedavi öncesi ve başlangıç oturumlarından tedaviyi sonlandırmaya kadar olan süreç aşama aşama ele alınır. Nüksetmeyi önleme kısmına değinilir. Amacına uygun şekilde düzenlen bu kitap, diyalektik davranış terapisi adapte edilirken belirli sınırlar çizmek yerine okuyucuya geliştirilebilir bir zemin hazırlar. Bu yönüyle tedaviyi uygulamaya ve geliştirmeye teşvik eder. This study examined the factor structure of the School Counselor Leadership Survey (SCLS). Survey development was a threefold process that resulted in a 39-item survey of 801 school counselors and school counselor supervisors. The exploratory factor analysis indicated a five-factor structure that revealed five key dimensions of school counselor leadership: (a) interpersonal influence, (b) systemic collaboration, (c) resourceful problem solving, (d) professional efficacy, and (e) social justice advocacy. This article discusses implications for practice, research, and training.

Toplumsal etkileşimin olduğu her yerde, anlaşmazlıkların olması doğal ve kaçınılmazdır. Kişiler, gruplar ve toplumlar arası anlaşmazlıklar; doğru bir biçimde yönetildiğinde gelişimin, ilerlemenin, dönüşümün, barışın ve bütünleşmenin hem enerji kaynağı hem de motoru olabilmektir. Ancak, anlaşmazlıklar yanlış ve yıkıcı yaklaşımlarla yönetildiğinde ise; yıkımın, şiddetin, zulmün ve acının kaynağına dönüşmektedir.

Anlaşmazlıkları ortadan kaldırma, farklılığı ortadan kaldırmaktadır. Doğa ve insanlık, farklılığı ve çoklığı kabul etmeyi ve anlamayı gerektirir. Farklılığı ortadan  kaldırmaya çalışmak yerine; onu anlamaya ve nasıl yöneteceğimizi keşfetmeye başladığımızda, yolumuz anlaşmazlıklarımızı nasıl yöneteceğimizden geçmektedir. Anlaşmazlıkları nasıl yöneteceğimiz üzerine odaklandığımızda, karşımıza en temel yaklaşım ve paradigma olan "dönüşümsel arabuluculuk" çıkmaktadır.Dönüşümsel arabuluculuğun alanyazına en önemli katkısı, anlaşmazlık çözüm sürecinin toplumsal değerlerden ve kültürden bağımsız olmadığı,ideolojimizin ve inanç tarzımızın anlaşmazlıklara ilişkin değerlendirmelerimizi, tutumlarımızı ve anlaşmazlıklarımızı ele alış tarzımızı etkilediği düşüncesidir. Yine, dönüşümsel arabuluculuğun en ayırt edici özelliği, anlaşmazlıkları yönetim sürecinin, kişileri dönüştürebileceğine, geliştirebileceğine ve güçlendirebileceğine yönelik yapıcı ve olumlu duruşudur.

Bush ve P. Folger tarafından geliştirilen "dönüşümsel arabuluculuk modeli" ülkemizde, her sene mahkemelere taşınan yüz binlerce anlaşmazlığı, çekişmeyi ve ayrışmayı yüz yüze müzakere ederek yapıcı ve barışçıl olarak çözme kapasitesini güçlendirmek için bir fırsat ve araç olacaktır. Cezalandırıcı adalet anlayışından, onarıcı adalet anlayışına dönme çabalarına ışık tutacaktır.

Bu eser,içerdiği alternatif paradigma çerçevesinde hukuk sistemimize yeni giren arabuluculuk modelinin doğru ve amacına uygun kullanılması için de referans olacak anlamlı ve önemli bir eserdir. Buna ek olarak, anlaşmazlık çözümü üzerine çalışan hukukçulara, psikologlara, psikolojik danışmanlara, eğitimcilere, psikiyatristlere ve sosyal çalışmacılara hem kurumsal anlamda hem de somut anlaşmazlıkların ve çatışmaların yapıcı ve barışcıl yönetimi konusunda yol gösterecek temel bir başvuru kaynağı olacaktır.

A partir del hecho innegable de que toda institución educativa es una construcción social generada por la acción colectiva de diversos agentes interrelacionados entre sí, los cuales intervienen en su estructuración y desarrollo, en el texto se analiza la participación del personal académico en la configuración y reconfiguración de la estructura y dinámica de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México -institución clave en la vida nacional- a lo largo de su historia y, particularmente, su intervención en la regulación del trabajo académico.
Dicho análisis se centra en dos formas estructuradas de participación: el desarrollo institucionalizado de su propio trabajo académico dentro de una estructura académico-laboral determinada (o división del trabajo) y su injerencia política en la estructura de toma de decisiones institucionales (los “órganos de gobierno”), bajo condiciones socio-históricas nacionales cambiantes, en el transcurso de todo un siglo (1910-2010).
Desde la perspectiva sociológica de Pierre Bourdieu, el análisis de la participación académica en la conformación, reproducción y/o transformación del orden legítimo instaurado en el campo universitario, permite identificar la existencia de dos sub-órdenes articulados entre sí, pero cada uno con su propia lógica y estructura, el orden académico político y el orden académico-laboral, en torno a los cuales se da una lucha recurrente por su re-definición entre distintas fuerzas académicas, las cuales tienden cíclicamente a tomar determinadas posiciones dentro de la UNAM: el polo de la defensa de la autonomía real, de la democracia universitaria participativa y de la transformación del orden universitario (los heterodoxos); el polo de la heteronomía ocultada por un discurso ‘liberal-autonómico’ asociado a la defensa del orden universitario y de una estructura de poder burocrático-autoritaria, articulada con una estructura de toma de decisiones democrático-representativa subordinada al poder burocrático (democracia burocratizada) (los ortodoxos); y el polo de la indiferencia multiforme y el escepticismo (que puede contribuir con su inacción al orden o a su transformación) (los indolentes).

Tüm yaşamımız duygu ve düşüncelerimiz tarafından yönetilmektedir. Çoğumuz ağırlıkla gerçeğin farkına varmadan yaşadığımızdan düşünce becerilerimizi geliştirmeyi önemsemeyiz. Ancak düşünme, eğitim, psikoloji ve daha birçok alandaki bilim insanının üzerinde çalıştığı ve geliştirmeyi hedefledikleri beceriler arasındandır. Düşünme türleri içinde eleştirel düşünme en temel ve önemlileri arasındadır. Pek çok kişi için düşünme bilinç dışı bir eylem iken bilinç alanına çekip özel eğitim teknikleri ile geliştirmek mümkündür. Bu kitap sayesinde eleştirel düşünme becerilerinin kapsamında kişinin tarafsız düşünür hâline gelme, düşünme seviyesinden haberdar olma, temel akıl becerileri, yetenekleri, içgörülerinin gelişmesine destek olma, sunulan düşüncenin zayıf ve güçlü manasını keşfetme vb. gibi becerilerini geliştirme, kendi düşünme standartlarını bilme, soru sorma ve düşünmedeki yerini anlama, düşünme içeriğini öğrenme, iyi düşünme becerilerini edinme, karar alma, problem çözme, mantık dışı düşünce ile başa çıkma, ulusal ve uluslararası propaganda yolları zihinsel kandırmaca ve manipülasyonun farkına varma, etik akıl yürütme, stratejik düşünme becerileri ve ileri düşünür olma başlıklarında bilgi ve beceri kazandırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Buraya kadar sözü edilen bu becerileri kapsayan kitabın hem bilgi vermesi hem de Türk akademisyen ve düşünürleri tarafından bu konuda yeni eserlerin kaleme alınmasını, araştırma yapılmasını teşvik etmesi hedeflenmektedir. Kitabın hedef kitlesi, matematik bilimlerinde ve sosyal bilimlerde eğitim gören öğrenciler ve akademisyenler, politikacılar, medya mensupları ilk akla gelenler arasındadır. Abstract: This study explores the leadership actions-oriented behavior of school principals in Finland. Actions-orientated behavior
enables the leader to appropriately articulate relations and task orientation to meet the immediate contextual demands and
to accommodate followership toward change and development. The leadership actions-orientated behavior of Finnish school
principals were studied in three schools. In-depth interviews with school actors (principals, vice principals, teachers, special
educators, and nonteaching staff) were conducted to triangulate the analyzed data. It was found that leadership actions-oriented
behavior enabled school leaders to articulate appropriate behavioral patterns to generate motivation and commitment. The
results suggest that actions orientations toward high-on relations enabled leaders to achieve leadership success, while actions
orientations toward high-on task enabled leadership effectiveness. Actions-oriented behavior toward high-on task enables
leadership flexibility with greater leadership elasticity. The results suggest that school actors anticipated a relational approach,
whose actions orientations were high-on task. The results also suggest that relations-oriented behavior is rationally applied by
school leaders who have remained in the organization for a longer time to strengthen the systematic approach. It was found
that leaders’ actions orientation with high-on task were more effective, while leadership actions orientation with high-on
relations generated social harmony. The results suggest that leadership actions-oriented behavioral flexibility and mobility can
be maintained by articulating high relations to low relations and high task to low task, not necessarily from task to relations or
relations to task alone. In doing so, a leader’s personality is prevented from distortions and behavior dysfunction.

Social media tools permeate the college student experience including for those students who hold leadership positions on campus. The purpose of this study was to document the experiences and online behaviors of 40 junior and senior
student leaders on digital communication tools. The study was conducted at two institutions in the western United States. Three research questions guided the sequential
exploratory mixed methods study connecting student leadership, the presentation of identity, and decision-making with social media use. The study involved a three phase
mixed methods analysis of focus group interviews and 2,220 social media posts.

Five major findings surfaced, including (a) social media impact starting in K-12 (b) college student leaders’ navigation of social media (c) presentation of digital identity (d) the beginning of leadership presence and possibilities and (e) significance of social media guidance in college. These findings suggest college student educators should implement holistic digital leadership education. Initiatives should begin early, prior to
student enrollment in higher education, focusing on identity expression, positivepossibilities-based perspectives, with a focus on social media’s potential impact on student groups, social communities, and social change. Findings from this study can mobilize higher education professionals, student peers, and parents to become digital educators, providing tools for students to implement in their digital practices.

In this Working Paper, we compare two institutional types of universities in a systemic way along 13 dimensions and 141 characteristics:

1) The first type is the multiversity, because multiple arts and sciences are co-existing next to each other without overarching integration. The multiversity is an institutional type reflecting the currently prevailing paradigm in higher education, which we call Modernist Higher Education.

2) The second type of university can be called transversity, because it is transformative, transdisciplinary, transparadigmatic, transcultural, transgenerational, transsectoral and translocal. The transversity is an institutional type reflecting the emerging paradigm of Transformative Higher Education.

There are many possible variants of transversities. In this paper, we focus on a specific transversity: the University for the Future (U4F). The U4F is a new multi-local university that is currently under development. The U4F is one among other contributions to the formation of the emerging paradigm of Transformative Higher Education. The U4F represents a whole system (re)design of higher education. The contention is that reinventing higher education for the 21st century requires transformative changes in all dimensions in ways that are aligned with each other.

The comparison therefore emphasizes the systemic, multidimensional view of the changes that are needed in and beyond higher education to grow out of the contemporary Grand Challenges into a dignified next stage of human civilisation. The comparison is based on long-standing professional experience of the authors in multiversities and in educational innovation initiatives. For the sake of readability, literature is not included in the comparison tables.

Using social capital theory as a framework, the authors examined data from the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS: 2002) to examine how student contact with high school counselors about college information and other college-related variables influence students’ college application rates. In addition to some college related variables, the number of school counselors, and student contact were significant predictors of college application rates.  Implications for school counselors and counselor training are included.

This article explores the lack of diversity at the 8 Ivy League institutions using a Critical Race Theory lens. It includes a comprehensive literature review of the scholarship related to diversity in academe, but especially within the areas of elite institutions and administration. The article also provides data pertaining to the senior leadership at the Ivy League institutions juxtaposed with data on senior level administrators throughout the nation, using the American Council on Education’s On the
Pathway to the Presidency report. Lastly, the article provides recommendations to presidents and institutions for bolstering high-level diversity among high level administrators. The authors stress the importance of addressing the historical and current
policies and practices that either facilitate or negate the goals of diversity. They also encourage Ivy League institutions to create internal committees or task forces that focus on racial and ethnic disparities in senior administration.

Facing enormous global challenges, there is an immediate need to better align universities with business innovation supply chains, talent needs of employers as well as regional needs more generally. Moreover, the development of knowledge-driven, ‘smart’ development of our societies needs informed leadership.

Despite this, we experienced a distinct lack of inspiration and innovation in the higher education sector. Most discussions and models of higher education involve incremental adaptations of the existing models, which are far from adventurous and often only involve adding technology.

It is important to look at the leadership style that affects the faculty job performance through organizational climate and job satisfaction.

The main objective was to examine the relationship between anxiety and teachers' performance in private secondary schools in Mukono Municipality. Head teachers, teachers, Chairman Board of Governors, District education officer and Inspector of Schools composed participants to the study giving a total of 60 participants whose data was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The study adopted a descriptive study design. A correlation Analysis was done to establish the existing relationship between anxiety and teacher's performance while a regression analysis was used to examine the effects of anxiety on the teachers' performance. The results indicate that a negative and significant relationship at 1% Exist between teachers' performance and Anxiety (R=-0.964, P<0.01). The negative relationship indicates that an increase in anxiety leads to a decrease in teacher's performance and a decrease in anxiety leads to an increase in teacher's performance. Results further indicate that the R 2 of the model is 0.93, which implies that anxiety explain 93% change in the performance of teachers. It further revealed that lack of commitment to work, transfer aggression to students, getting distraction at work, ineffective teachers failing to get involved in proper preparation of lessons and evaluating students' work, failing to finish content syllabus coverage, lost morale and negative attitude towards work are the major effects of anxiety on the teachers' performance.

Compared to the few public higher education institutions in the prewar era, postwar Somalia boasts a large number of academic institutions at the tertiary level, mainly as privately owned universities. Although these community-initiated academic establishments are making tremendous contributions to the higher education sector, particularly in the absence of an effective national government, one can argue that much still remains at stake in terms of evaluation and quality assurance, key elements necessary for institutional accreditation and acceptance of credentials by other educational establishments issuing the same level of certificates. In this essay we aim to provide an overview discussion of the trends of higher education in Somalia and the way forward for newly emerged institutions, which have taken the bold initiative of changing the landscape of Somalia’s higher education.

Aquí comparto mi epistolario personal.  Principalmente, està organizado como base de datos de fuentes primarias de información referente a la magnitud, direcciòn y sentido de las diversas fuerzas intrauniversitarias que se hacen presentes en el periodo julio 2005- enero 2006.  Además, presento una descripción panorámica de lo que desde mi perspectiva constituye la actuación –y su trasfondo– que despliega el pequeño segmento de universitarios que buscan continuar sirviéndose ilegítimamente de la UQROO.  Como complemento, caracterizo la lucha que el sector de universitarios leales a la institución llevó a cabo, para lograr que los propósitos ideologizantes de su contraparte en el debate no se cumplieran... al menos, no tan fácilmente como seguramente supusieron.    También, identifico la manera en que el segmento que logra parar la embestida contra la institución, aprovechando el punto cercano a la resonancia en que los sitiadores colocaron a la universidad, cataliza la realización de un evento que busca el acuerdo y la concordia entre buena parte de los intervenientes en la dinámica universitaria.  Describo y explico la manera en que, no obstante, el más importante agente de cambio institucional finalmente se vé forzado a presentar -a la junta directiva- su renuncia a este importante cargo, a principios de diciembre, así como la posición de muchos segmentes universitarios en cuanto a que no se acepte la separación de éste. 
          Sin embargo, el 13 de diciembre del 2005, la Junta Directiva acuerda aprobar la solicitud de renuncia de Francisco Rosado May a la Rectoría de la Universidad de Quintana Roo.  El 21 de diciembre de ese año, un nuevo Rector es designado, para el periodo 2006-2010, proveniente del aparato estatal de gobierno del Estado;  a finales de abril del 2006, es designado el nuevo Secretario General de la institución.  Desde esta fecha y hasta el 15 de febrero del 2008, el Rector otorga amplio poder a la Secretaría General, para encargarse, realmente con exclusividad, de  las actividades académicas de la universidad. 
          Los eventos, pues, de manera alguna terminaban el 13 de diciembre del 2006.  Al científico social este acontecer le impuso la obligación ética de seguirlos monitoreando, registrando, analizando y haciendo públicos.

This thesis argues that foreign and second language teaching productivity can only reach its proper potential when it is accorded priority, second only to language learner productivity, amongst the many competing productivities which are always asserted by stakeholders in educational institutions.

A theoretical foundation for the research is established by examining the historical concept of productivity, and its more recent manifestation as knowledge worker productivity, especially as applied to teachers.

The empirical basis of the thesis is sourced from a chronological series of twenty biographical case studies in language teaching venues in Australia, New Zealand, Oceania and East Asia. The biographical case study methodology, although rare in applied linguistics, is justified by reference to its wide and growing application in other fields of qualitative research. The case studies are analysed for common patterns of productivity, as well as teaching productivity inhibition or failure.

It was affirmed across all of the case studies without exception that external parties could not control or even reliably predict what individual students might learn, and how well, from instances of instructed language teaching. This was regardless of the power of institutional players, external resources, curriculums or the teacher. Student belief in the immediate value of what was to be learned in a given lesson, and personal confidence in an ability to learn it were the most critical factors.

Teaching productivity was found to turn, ultimately, on the teacher's ability to influence the probability of student learning. The teacher could best influence learning probability by enhancing student motivation. The most effective environments for teaching productivity were seen to be those where the teacher was professionally equipped and politically enabled to exercise judgements which maximized opportunities for student language learning productivity. A negotiated pact concerning both curriculum and method often proved effective, especially with mature students, and at times required some deception of institutional authorities.

Empirically, the encouragement of reciprocal learning relationships between teacher and students was found to be powerfully enabling for language teaching productivity in the case studies.

In many venues a small but effective minority of 'intimate learners' were also able to leverage their language learning productivity by forging more personal relationships with the teacher.

The wider cultural paradigm within each of the countries represented in the case studies sanctioned different paths and limitations for both language learners and teachers, and hence was seen to influence teaching productivity in critical ways. It was found that under certain conditions, notably (but not exclusively) those prevailing in many East Asian educational institutions, that certification of foreign language skills had a higher cultural, employment and monetary value than the actual ability to exercise foreign language skills.

A negative influence on teacher productivity in many of the case studies was an ignorance about language learning and teaching amongst institutional players. The disregard of language teacher professionalism was fed by a belief that being able to speak a language was all that was necessary to teach it, and reinforced by misinterpreting the meaning of test results. Related to this, an imbalance of power relationships between teachers or students with other institutional interests was consistently found to interfere with teaching and learning productivities. Overall, the model of productivity understood in institutions instanced by the case studies tended to reflect a 19th Century economic paradigm of capital, raw materials (students) and labour (dispensable classroom workers) rather than any more sophisticated grasp of knowledge worker productivity.

It was demonstrated in the context of the case studies that productivity, and in particular knowledge worker productivity, is a complex concept whose facets require detailed analysis to arrive at a proper understanding of the role that foreign and second language teachers play in educational institutions.

In the era of the 21st century, the best higher education institutions have more than one role. Not only do they educate and train students but they also create new ideas and knowledge for the short-term contemporary issues as well as long-term complex problems. In the strategic goals, five aspects are critical in higher education: the democratization of knowledge and access, the contestability of the market and funding, the research technologies, the global mobility and the integration with the industry. Universities should have strategic plans including strategic goals. In this study, the strategic models and plans of the public (5) and private (5) universities are analysed from the five different aspects. In order to deeply understand the dynamics at these universities, the phenomenological interpretive analysis is preferred. University leaders
and managerial departments should consider market needs and do strategic plan accordingly. Hence, they should develop the strategic thinking capacity of both their academic staff and researchers for short and long terms need of the industry. Results have shown that most universities have wrong perception regarding the strategic model and plan. Neither private nor public universities possess enough knowledge on the subject.

Research and theories of leadership development link the capacity for complex thinking to effectiveness at leading adaptive change. However, few empirical studies examine how this link operates in natural work settings, or explore its implications for practicing the kinds of leadership being called for in higher education today. In this study, I address this gap using post-positivist, ethnographic methods to examine how three higher education leaders, who are publicly recognized as effective change agents and demonstrate the capacity for complex thinking via research-validated instruments, use complex thinking to understand and lead adaptive change in natural work settings. Drawing on a conceptual framework that spans multiple theories of leadership and human development, including Torbert’s developmental action inquiry, Kegan’s subject-object theory, and Heifetz’s adaptive leadership theory, I interpret the data in the context of two research questions: (1) How, if at all, do three developmentally mature leaders in higher education use complex thinking to understand their adaptive leadership work?; and (2) How, if at all, do participants' uses of complex thinking shape their decisions and actions on the ground? I find that participating leaders use their ongoing awareness of the constructed nature of reality, combined with high attunement to convergence and divergence of local and broader situational factors, to help their communities identify and address three types of value-reality gaps: part-whole tensions, critical ambiguities, and identity fractures. I provide rich illustrations of how these individuals draw on complex-thinking capacities to pursue six action strategies: (a) dynamically balance autonomy and oversight, (b) create shared frames illuminating larger realities, (c) engage and reorient the community, (d) co-construct and dynamically interpret goals, (e) cultivate strategic relationships grounded in mutual trust, and (f) create conditions that help people weather uncertainties, build new identities, and shape the future. I also discuss five, complex thinking informed action themes that run robustly through these three participants’ leadership practices: (a) cultivate expansive multicentered purposes, (b) illuminate the invisible, (c) redefine and recalibrate, (d) keep things connected, and (e) orchestrate co-construction. I discuss implications for leadership practice and outline opportunities for future research.

The Purposes of this study are to explore the existing quality status and analyze the gaps between existing practices and formal quality assurance and accreditation (QAA) systems, and to assess and tap the institutional learning and challenges of introducing QAA mechanism in Bangladesh. However, the intention is to explore the preparedness to introduce formal QAA mechanism and their implications on the institutional performance in the context of Bangladeshi Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The Mix method approach is applied here, where the primary data are collected from the university faculty members in order to determine the perceptions towards quality improvement initiatives in HEIs. The study revealed that HEIs in Bangladesh face a number of challenges in terms of formal quality assurance practices. The key variables brought from formal QA framework fell into six quality areas: leadership and institutional governance, curriculum, facilities, student, staff, and quality assurance process development. The study suggests that the main challenge lies with quality assurance process development to introduce formal QAA in HEIs. Existing quality status from this study shows that quality areas of student, curriculum and facilities remain above the average level of standard, but the quality areas of leadership and institutional governance, staff and quality assurance process development are below the average conditions. The findings would assist academicians to enhance quality assurance framework at national level as well as institutional level. However, the challenges the individual higher education institution would encounter to implement the formal QAA mechanism are addressed at length.

Higher Education has witnessed an increase in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities on college campuses. Despite this slow growth, many colleges and university climates remain largely unwelcoming to LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff. Student activism has largely been responsible for this growth, supported by staff and faculty advocates. This qualitative case study explored the tactics and strategies staff and faculty leveraged in advancing LGBTQ equity at Rural Public University in the Midwestern United States. The study advances a conceptual framework for queer activist leadership in higher education. Findings reveal how a small network of campus leaders engaged in queer leadership strategies through queer centered activism to advance LGBTQ equity in institutional policy and practice. Findings reveal rich implications for college administrators and higher education leaders advancing change for LGBTQ equity.

ABSTRACT İnsanlar ilişkilerinde iki konumda olabilir: yönlendirilen ya da yönlendiren. Lider terimi, en yalın haliyle küçük ya da büyük bir grup içerisinde yönlendiren konumunda olan kişilere gönderme yapar. Ne var ki, yönlendirici olmak liderlik üzerinde belirleyici olan tek parametre değildir. Farklı durumlarda farklı liderlik biçimlerinden söz etmek mümkündür. Bu çalışmada, liderlik kavramına yüklenen çeşitli anlamlara belirim kazandırmaya çalışılmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı, tanımları sunulan liderlik tiplerini sınıflandırmak ve okuyucunun bütüncül bir bakış açısı kazanmasına yardımcı olmaktır. Çalışmamızda literatür taraması yöntemi kullanılmış ve bu yolla, karizmatik liderlikten açık liderliğe kadar uzanan bir perspektifte akademik topluluğun sunduğu liderlik tiplerine yönelik kavramlaştırmalara tümsel bir belirim kazandırmaya çalışılmıştır.

He earned a baccalaureate degree in economics from Illinois Benedictine University and a master's degree in Higher Education and a Ph.D. in Educational Research and Policy Studies from Arizona State University. He has a broad range of experiences in higher education student affairs administration, strategic planning, and policy formation within state and institutional settings. He has served as an academic advisor, counselor, academic program manager, instructor, athletic administrator, and student development practitioner at Arizona State University from 1989-2000. He has contributed to a number of published articles, and co-authored a book chapter. His primary area of research focuses on the complex social-political factors that influence education policy. This includes awareness of internal and external forces that can enable or inhibit effective leadership.
