Heritage Conservation

This report assesses 8 sites within the Bendigo hospital grounds which have potential heritage significance, as indicated by the Bendigo Heritage Advisor, Andrew Ward 12.8.93. To properly assess these sites, the historical development of the complex has been examined and brief inspections made of each of the eight sites. The sites are:

7.Modesty House (servants wing)

Site
The Bendigo Base Hospital at Lucan Street, Bendigo comprises an area of approximately 10 acres. The hospital buildings are bounded by Stewart, Arnold, Lucan and Bayne Streets. The main entrance to the site is from Lucan Street and access is also available from entries on Bayne, Stewart and Arnold Streets.

La masse d'informations qui circule sur le coronavirus est caractéristique des situations épidémiques. La différence avec le contexte de la société du numérique est que ces informations sont amplifiées à la fois par les médias mainstream et les réseaux socionumériques. Ce trop-plein d'informations crée ainsi une situation d'« infodémie » perceptible à la difficulté à distinguer la bonne de la mauvaise information. Dans cet article, notre objectif est de décrire la manière avec laquelle ces fausses informations se développent dans le contexte particulier de l'Afrique. Pour ce faire, nous sommes partis de l'exemple de la théorie sur Bill Gates à qui on prêterait l'intention de profiter des programmes de vaccination contre la covid-19 pour contrôler la démographie des pays pauvres. Par la méthode d'analyse de réseaux sociaux, nous avons pu ainsi cartographier sur Twitter les principaux acteurs de ces théories conspirationnistes, de déterminer les rapports qui les unissent de les classer selon leurs poids et influences. La méthode d'analyse de contenu a enfin servi à comprendre la motivation de ces super propagateurs de fake news.

Iz srca se zahvaljujem mentorici Karin Košak, ki mi je zaupala idejo in izvedbo projekta. Rada bi se zahvalila vsem, ki so me od začetka podpirali, verjeli vame in mi pomagali, da sem lahko najprej izpeljala projekt in ga nato še navedla v diplomskem delu. Posebej bi se zahvalila partnerju Emirju, ker mi resnično pomaga in vedno stoji ob strani, Metki in Ireni -One Fiction Factory, da sta me veliko naučili in popeljali v ta svet umetnosti, Dušanu za skupno sodelovanje pri projektu, Kim in Davidu za nadomeščanje, Simoni za lekturo, Andreji za prevode, Ingi in ekipi Gledališča Glej, ker sta mi med uprizoritvami dovolili, da sem lahko v središču Ljubljane uporabila njune prostore, Boru za vskok pri podstavku, Andražu za oblikovanje fotografij, Dunji Wedam za vse fotografije med uprizoritvami, Branki za pripravo in ureditev fotografij za diplomsko delo, Maji in Mateji za pomoč in podporo, svoji in Emirjevi družini, ker sta mi med pisanjem diplomskega dela pomagali in pazili na moja sončka. Diplomsko delo je posvečeno mami Mileni, ker od mojega rojstva verjame vame in me že toliko let podpira pri vseh projektih, ta pa ji je eden ljubših. v IZVLEČEK Cilj diplomskega dela je predstavitev uprizoritve živega kipa iz časa rimske Emone, pogled, kako dojemamo obdobje tistega časa in kako navdih antične zgodovine lahko prevedemo v današnji čas. Diplomsko delo je razdeljeno na dva dela, teoretičnega in praktičnega. V teoretičnem delu so predstavljeni zgodovina rimske Emone, oblačila tistega časa. Oblačenje je imelo takrat pomembno vlogo, saj se mu je tudi namenilo veliko časa. Glavni vpliv na rimsko kulturo in religijo so imeli Etruščani, Grki in tudi lokalno prebivalstvo osvojenih območij. V praktičnem delu je predstavljena ideja, zakaj sem izdelala živi kip Zlatega Emonca, ki stoji na Kongresnem trgu v Ljubljani. Predstavljena je izdelava živega kipa od ideje do končnega izdelka. Opisani so način izdelave oblačil, krojev, izdelava lasulje, čevljev, maske, poslikava telesa, izdelava scenskih elementov in materiali. Zelo pomemben je potek uprizoritve živega kipa, ki se zelo povezuje z oblačilom, s čimer je tudi poudarjena kultura oblačenja tistega časa. Oblikovanje in izvedba vključujeta praktičnost, vzdrževanje in finančno omejitev izdelave.

Selimiye Camii, Mimar Sinan’ın ustalık eseri ve UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi’nde yer alan bir Dünya Miras Alanı. Son dönemde gündeme gelen bir restorasyon planı, kubbedeki 18. yüzyıl kalemişlerinin kazınarak yerine varsayıma dayalı 16. yüzyıl üslubunun uygulanmasını öngörüyor.

Bu yaklaşım, Selimiye Camii'nin tarihi ve kültürel önemini bir kenara bırakarak sadece koruma kuramı ve ilkeleriyle çelişmiyor aynı zamanda koruma bilim alanını ve bilimsel ölçütlerini modern/batılı/seküler ile islami/milli/yerli gibi bir karşılaştırma ile politik çatışmanın merkezine de koyuyor. Zira her tarihî katman, geçmişin bir belgesi ve kültürel hafızanın parçasıdır. Onların yok edilmesi, yalnızca fiziksel bir tahribat değil; aynı zamanda tarihî sürekliliğin ve otantikliğin silinmesidir.

Selimiye’nin geleceğe aktarılabilmesi, katmanlarına saygı göstermek ve bilimsel koruma ilkelerine bağlı kalmakla mümkün olabilir.

The Selimiye Mosque, Mimar Sinan’s masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a cultural treasure of universal value.

A recent restoration proposal foresees scraping away the 18th-century dome paintings and replacing them with a speculative 16th-century style. This approach not only contradicts conservation theory and principles but also places the field of conservation itself—and its scientific standards—at the center of a political confrontation framed as modern/Western/secular versus Islamic/national/indigenous.

Every historical layer is a document of the past and a part of cultural memory. Erasing them means not only a physical destruction but also the loss of historical continuity and authenticity.

The only way to safeguard Selimiye for the future is to respect its layers and remain faithful to the principles of scientific conservation.

RESUMO: Actualmente, o edificado corrente do Porto de valor patrimonial, assim como de outras cidades de Portugal, corre sérios riscos de desaparecimento devido ao seu avançado estado de degradação e a intervenções negligentes. Apresenta-se uma síntese do contributo que as teorias do restauro tiveram na concepção de uma metodologia de intervenção na casa burguesa do Porto, desenvolvida com o objectivo de apoiar e agilizar acções de intervenção baseadas em boas práticas, capazes de promover a salvaguarda deste património.

The evolving relationship between contemporary practice and inherited structures necessitates sustainable strategies for the preservation and reinforcement of heritage assets, safeguarding their functionality over
time. This study investigates the mechanical properties of traditional and innovative mortar-based materials for the repair of architectural elements, with a particular focus on artistic stuccoes and decorative features. The research aims to reduce their vulnerability to environmental, seismic, and
anthropogenic factors, including pollution and climate change, which accelerate material degradation and ageing. The mix designs of artificial stone materials appropriate for the proposed strategies make use
of natural rocks (e.g., limestone, alabastrine gypsum) and different constituents (e.g., vegetable sisal fibres, siliceous/siliceous-aluminous pozzolana); innovative raw earth-based mortars are also studied for
plastering, rendering and repair of earthen buildings. In particular, a minimum of three specimens for each mix design will be tested through flexural mechanical tests in an undergoing phase of the research
and using a displacement-controlled testing machine, following a standardised protocol –scientifically recognised at an European level– specifically developed for mortars (elements that exhibit material affinity
with the interventions addressed in this study). The results will then be comparatively assessed, considering not only the structural performance but also the material compatibility for potential field applications. Finally, with reference to a case study, a design approach is presented allowing for
interventions on existing structures and the creation of new architectural shapes in an intimate, seamless dialogue: emblematic –following the example of San Francesco di Assisi– of an essentiality able of communicate with clarity and power.

A large part of current New Zealand housing stock was built before compulsory home insulation was introduced in 1978. In recent years, the low energy efficiency of these older houses has aggravated significantly existing issues of health inequality, fuel poverty and building decay. As they will constitute a significant portion of future housing stock, their retrofit provides a logical option to meet present and future environmental imperatives and to tackle the most urgent health issues of a country with the second highest incidence of asthma in the world. State housing, in particular, includes a relevant portion of problematic buildings, which are cold and damp, often with evidence of mould growth. A consistent and significant cohort of them was built between 1940 and 1960, under the government-funded social housing scheme introduced in 1937 by the Labour Party administration. Urban graffiti dominates contemporary discourse, while rural examples, practices and motivations receive far less attention. However, urban graffiti is only a recent addition to the long history of rural practices of marking presence that began at least 40,000 years ago. Archaeological methodologies are now capable of uncovering large datasets of rural graffiti, enabling new categorisation systems and interpretations. Yet the vast array of markings, messages and meanings within rural art should not be confined within heritage and cultural resource management archives. Graffiti is inherently feral, and its untamed nature demands new approaches to preserve its wild nature. One such approach is ‘para-archiving’, representing an artistic method of archiving the unarchivable. This practice ensures that graffiti remains dynamic, active and untethered by hegemonic, archival gate-keeping systems.

6 Şubat 2023’de meydana gelen Kahramanmaraş merkezli depremden en çok etkilenen illerimizden biri de Hatay’dır. İlin merkez ilçesi olan Antakya’da da ağır kayıplara sebep olan deprem, tarihimizin tanığı olan kültür mirasımıza da zarar vermiş, pek çok eser ya ağır hasar almış ya da yıkılmıştır. Antik dönemden günümüze kadar önemini koruyan Kurtuluş Caddesi’nde bulunan Mustafa Kırk ve aynı caddeye açılan sokakta bulunan İsmail Solak’a ait evlerde bu deprem ile yıkılan evler arasındadır. Deprem öncesinde restorasyonu planlanan bu evler, çevresinde bulunan diğer önemli evlerle beraber Antakya’nın geleneksel dokusunu yansıtmaları açısından oldukça kıymetli eserlerimiz arasındaydı. Geç dönemde yapılan müdahalelerle özgün durumundan uzaklaştırılmış olsa da Antakya’da geleneksel konut mimarisinin en önemli bileşeni olan avlu ve avlu etrafında gelişen diğer yaşam birimleriyle mimariye kazandırıldıkları için bu makalenin konusu edilmiş, plan, mimari ve süsleme özellikleri açısından irdelenmiştir. Restorasyon projesi için yapılan çizimlerin ve çekilen son fotoğraflarının kullanıldığı bu çalışmada, kentte yaklaşık bir yüzyıl öncesinde gerçekleştirilmiş olan mimarinin ve sanatın okumalarını yapmak amaçlanmıştır. Bölgenin bilgilerine ulaşılabilen diğer evleri ile benzer ve farklı yönleri açısından değerlendirilerek, kenti ayağa kaldıracak yenileme çalışmalarına katkı sunacağı ön görülmüştür. Bununla beraber tarihimizin bize armağan ettiği ama koruyamadığımız bu eserleri Sanat Tarihi ve mimari literatürüne kazandırarak gelecek nesillerin geçmişimizden haberdar olması hedeflenmiştir.

Entre 2022 y 2024, se realizó un proyecto de investigaciones históricas, geofísicas y arqueológicas en el Castillo de San Lorenzo el Real de Chagres, fortaleza española del siglo XVIII en la desembocadura del río Chagres, Panamá. El estudio reveló que la actual estructura es la cuarta iteración del edificio y se presentan por primera vez datos históricos y arqueológicos detallando su evolución constructiva. No quedan restos del primer castillo, ya que fueron destruidos por el mar, pero se han reunido descripciones de la segunda versión, que fue tomada y arrasada por Henry Morgan. Las excavaciones y sondeos geofísicos descubrieron restos de la tercera fortaleza bajo los rellenos de la actual. Además, se revisaron documentos inéditos sobre la evolución de la tercera versión y se descubrió que el foso del segundo castillo fue reutilizado por las versiones posteriores hasta la actualidad, siendo una de las estructuras más antiguas del período colonial de Panamá.

This paper explores the architectural and socio- political legacy of the Case della madre e del bambino, welfare buildings developed by the Opera Nazionale Maternità e Infanzia (ONMI) during Fascist Italy, with a focus on their design, function, and postwar reuse. Originally conceived to serve women and children through a rationalist and non-rhetorical architectural language, these buildings reflected the regime’s eugenic policies while avoiding overt ideological symbolism. Drawing on the thoughts of Giuseppe Pagano, the study highlights how these “ordinary” architectures modest, functional, and unadorned, embodied a unique civic and hygienic modernity, which allowed for their continued use and reinterpretation after the fall of Fascism. Rather than being demolished or ideologically purged, many ONMI buildings were silently re- semantized and adapted for new uses, becoming enduring elements of urban welfare infrastructure throughout postwar Italy.
Through selected case studies from Mortara to Udine and Rome, the article assesses preservation challenges, contemporary values, and the feasibility of sustainable reuse strategies. In doing so, it contributes to the broader debate on the conservation of fascist- era buildings that lack commemorative symbolism but remain embedded in the everyday fabric of cities. The paper argues that these non-monumental structures, long considered “minor architecture,” merit recognition as part of Italy’s architectural heritage—not despite their origins, but because of the complex historical layers they represent and the continued social function they can fulfill.

Understanding the built heritage is the first step in its conservation. In the case of the vernacular heritage, a holistic approach must be adopted. Vernacular buildings and settlements are formed by aspects that are beyond their tangible and visual characteristics and attributes. Worldviews, values, beliefs, myths and other aspects of the intangible heritage of the community have contributed to the form, style and other tangible aspects of the built vernacular heritage. The natural environment is another aspect. Moreover, for living vernacular heritage, development needs of the community form the context and dynamics that should be considered in conservation plans. This paper is an essay on the need to adopt a holistic approach in vernacular heritage conservation, starting by a holistic understanding. Examples are used from the vernacular heritage of Muslim-majority communities where Islam is a crucial influence such as Siwa in Egypt and Shibam in Yemen. Also, examples are discussed from transhumance communities such as Hawraman in Iran and Khinalig in Azerbaijan. The study and conservation of vernacular heritage should benefit from the recent efforts to bridge gaps between cultural and natural heritage, movable and immovable heritage as well as tangible and intangible heritage. The essay recommends adopting the three recent developments in the field of heritage conservation, namely the notions of cultural landscape, historic urban landscape and peoplecentred conservation. Accordingly, a holistic approach to the study, understanding and conservation of the vernacular heritage addressing the 'what', 'how' and 'for whom' could be developed.

Effective management of heritage assets relies on decision-making which is underpinned by empirical evidence of impact of treatments on long term survival prospects of materials. Historic wrought iron presents a particular problem for conservation. It occupies a niche position between heritage and engineering, is frequently exposed to outdoor atmospheric corrosion and, in the case of bridges, gates and similar structures, may be required to perform a distinct function. Sector guidance to direct practices is based on anecdotal evidence and established methods. In its 70th anniversary year, the journal Čovjek i prostor introduces a thematic issue. Its goal is to create space, once a year, for an in-depth and systematic reflection on current topics of professional relevance. For the first thematic edition, we have chosen the adaptation and conversion of the existing built environment—a discipline internationally known as adaptive reuse. This term still lacks a proper equivalent in Croatian, and precisely through this issue, we hope to offer one. In collaboration with terminologist Siniša Runjaić, the editorial proposes a two-part Croatian term (prilagodba i prenamjena) that avoids literal borrowing from English and highlights two intertwined processes: adaptation, referring to changes in the physical or conceptual structure and technical systems of a building, and conversion, which involves a shift in its programmatic or functional use. Adaptive reuse is presented as a creative discipline at the intersection of architecture and conservation, oriented toward sustainability and the preservation of spatial identity. The issue brings together domestic and international authors and raises the question of how architecture can respond to a time when repair and transformation take precedence over new construction. The introductory essay is accompanied by photographs by Annie Hsiao-Ching Wang from her series The Mother as a Creator, symbolically linking the continuity of life with that of lived space.

Samarra rappresenta senza dubbio un caso particolare all'interno dell'ampio contesto delle esplorazioni pionieristiche che hanno visto il mondo occidentali interessarsi al patrimonio culturale iracheno nell'800. Al tempo, infatti, l'interesse degli imperi coloniali era rivolto ai siti archeologici pre-Islamici, per la loro correlazione con il testo Biblico: gli sforzi europei erano concentrati su interessi particolaristici, venivano considerati degni di rilevanza solo quei siti utili alla costruzione e all'affermazione identitaria occidentale. L'archeologia e, dunque, la sua rilevanza storica venivano gerarchizzate secondo i paradigmi occidentali ed europei. Conseguentemente a ciò, i siti archeologici ed artistici islamici venivano scarsamente presi in considerazione, in quanto considerati irrilevanti ai fini della legittimazione biblica. Una delle poche eccezioni a riguardo furono, però, gli scavi operati nel sito archeologico di Samarra, in Iraq. Dichiarata Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO nel 2007, Samarra oggi è al centro di sfide complesse che intrecciano politica, religione e memoria collettiva, in un contesto segnato da decenni di guerra e instabilità.

The IDB undertakes multiple activities in support of urban heritage preservation, including the provision of investment loans and reimbursable and nonreimbursable technical cooperation. The IDB also organizes policy debates, seminars, and technical exchanges among cities, and produces technical publications. The present study is intended to increase available knowledge on factors contributing to the long-term sustainability of urban heritage preservation efforts. In particular, the IDB seeks to expand the understanding of the economic aspects of sustainable preservation that are complementary to the social, environmental, and institutional aspects of heritage preservation that are better understood. The studies presented in this publication are intended to fill a knowledge gap and improve the overall effectiveness of urban heritage preservation and development efforts in the Latin American and Caribbean region, as well as in other regions around the world.

Kruškina osa srčikarica (Janus compressus Fabricius) pripada porodici Cephidae (ose vlatarice). Javlja se periodično. U godinama masovne pojave štete su znatne, osobito vidljive u mladim nasadima kruške i voćnim rasadnicima. Primarni domaćin štetnika je kruška koju najintenzivnije napada. Sekundarni domaćin je jabuka, dok mušmulu, dunju i aroniju napada samo sporadično. U pogledu morfološko-bioloških osobina kruškine ose srčikarice, prvu obuhvatniju znanstvenu studiju objavili su 1935. godine Balachowsky i Mesnil. Dostupna novija literatura skromno opisuje ovoga štetnika. Podaci o biološkom ciklusu vrlo su šturi i nekompletni, a pojedini podaci o biološko-morfološkim osobinama kontradiktorni su i konfuzni. Cilj je ovoga rada dati precizan opis morfoloških osobina kruškine ose srčikarice te tako eliminirati uočene literaturne proturječnosti. City is a dynamic place that includes social, cultural, spatial, environmental and economic features inside it. City gains qualification and takes form through these feature’s powers and size. According to time and age requirements city’s pattern has changed and these differences in city’s pattern determine city’s identity. With city’s growth and change we can see dynamism in land use. New settlements, industrial areas, trade blocs, education and health institutions can be seen as indicators of this dynamism. Every city has its own, unique type of dynamism and this dynamism shows us cities growth capacity and their potential. The paper pays attention to the historical building preventive technique consisting of the insertion of transversal wooden elements for the reinforcement of the walls. The 'mixed' wood-stone technique, generally interpreted as a variation of the ancient building methods of opus gallicum, is recognizable with evident differences from this latter in Medieval and Early Modern castles (e.g. Cervinara Castle) and archaeological Medieval urban sites (e.g., the ancient Cerreto Sannita). The recurrence of circular holes placed at fairly regular intervals along wall faces, of wooden fragments and mortars' internal finishing characterizes fabrics of Molise and Sannio contexts, typically affected by seismic events. An exhaustive framework of the technique is not yet available, neither in relation to Italian contexts nor in relation to European building areas. The interpretation of the construction phenomenon through a broad comparative lens is presented as a research perspective to understand the reasons of construction solutions and in the choice of wood species. Through the analysis of a range of case studies, the paper focuses on the above-mentioned construction technique in Italian Central-Southern areas characterized by a historical seismicity interlacing indirect sources analysis and onsite thematic surveys.

In this article we will study the expansion of the olive grove in andalusia throughout the modern period, putting it in relation to political, social and economic circumstances. olive oil was a product dedicated to trade, mainly in the outside and linked to the wool market, and therefore its demand depended on the development of national and foreign draperies, and the circumstances of foreign policy. The sectors involved in the trade will be responsible for financing most of this expansion, the formation of larger units of exploitation, and the building of mills and constructions which often become interesting buildings.

Changes in rainfall patterns, humidity, and temperature, as well as greater exposure to severe weather events, has led to the need for adapting cultural heritage to climate change. However, there is limited research accomplished to date on the process of adaptation of cultural heritage to climate change. This paper examines the perceptions of experts involved in the management and preservation of cultural heritage on adaptation to climate change risks. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts from the UK, Italy, and Norway as well as a participatory workshop with stakeholders. The results indicate that the majority of interviewees believe that adaptation of cultural heritage to climate change is possible. The most prominent phases of spatial development and use of the peripteral space in medieval and modern times record robust interpolations. In the intercolumniation major church dignitaries were buried. Some of the oldest of Split customs unfolded in this area, such as the St Domnius Day procession. When the Chapel of St Matthew was built in the 8th century, the central part of the trabeation of the southern peripter was knocked down, in the 13th century it was the turn of the prostasis, i.e., the vestibule, because of the construction of the bell tower and in the 17th the eastern side, because of the building of the sacristy and the choir. The condition of the building today is rooted in events aimed at purifying the peripter and the cathedral of all later buildings. In spite of such interventions being, even at the end of the 19th and in the early 20th century no longer chiming with the principles of the conservation discipline, the removal was still carried out. By way of result of the purification, on the northern side a view onto the cathedral, that is, the architecture of the Antique mausoleum and periptery, was opened up. Previously, even a great opponent of purification and restoration, Alois Riegl, had said it would be necessary to renovate the peripter if there was a new view onto the cathedral. Because of the opening of the space and of the partially demolished peripter, a continuity was achieved between the masonry mass of the monumental building, making its elongated tambour disproportionate to the whole, i.e., to the original architectural composition. When the Romanesque bell tower was restored around the fin-de-siècle, the peripter, previously integrated into the campanile, was now free-standing, a great risk to structural stability, a risk that has still not been addressed.
The objective of the reconstruction of the peripter started in 2021 was to prevent the collapse of parts of the composition, or indeed of the whole structure, looking ever more likely. This was to be aided by the reestablishment of the original structural value of the peripter. This act of structural consolidation required the restoration of the coffered panels to their original positions, thus concluding the original Late Antique linkage of mausoleum and peripter with the prostasis or vestibule of the shrine, that is, the medieval connection of peripter with Romanesque cathedral tower.
These complex operations were preceded by the production of detailed documentation. An architectural record of the whole and the details of mausoleum/ cathedral was produced, fragments of the coffered panels were scanned and iron clamps were located. After this a conservation-restoration feasibility study was performed, containing an art-historical summary, an analysis of the development of the area, analysis of the state as found, mapping of the items of damage and pollution on the drawings and the production of guidelines for conservation-restoration works. This study comprehended all previous knowledge and research on the topic of the development and function of this area, with interpolations of both sacred and secular structures. An expert understanding was advanced concerning the state as found with the various forms of degradation processes arising out of the interaction of environmental influences, disturbance of structural stability and the natural processes of the aging of materials.
The fragments of the peripter had been displaced which meant that they had to be located, inventoried, measured, scanned, photographed and brought together in catalogue form. Designs and structural engineer’s reports were made, that is, a structural examination of the condition of the construction and a structural calculation were performed, including an analysis of the whole and of each individual part. Not long after this, in December 2021, conservation-restoration works were begun on the northern side of the peripter, including re-integration operations. In the several ensuing campaigns in the years to come almost the whole of the northern side (the north-west, north and north-east of the octagon) was covered by conservation-restoration work, and more than 12 fragments of trabeation and coffered panels were reintegrated by being restored to their original positions.

The paper presents a short history of archaeometry investigations in Serbia, from the first published work in 1932 until today. It then describes the most important laboratories and institutions that perform archaeometry investigations in Serbia today, their teams, equipment, projects, and cooperation:

The memory of resistance and struggle against fascism in socialist Yugoslavia was not only mobilized by the aesthetic or visual narrative potential of memorial sculptural or architectural projects, but also by the materiality that served, at the same time, as an objective and documentary record, and as an affective means of transmitting memory. By exploring how memory of resistance was mediated through wartime objects’ and sites’ materiality, this chapter points to the centrality of material culture for contemporary critical studies of heritage-making practices of socialist Yugoslavia. The chapter highlights a terminological distinction between the general term “resistance” and the more specific “People’s Liberation Struggle” (NOB) as a framework for understanding the shifting logic of heritage politics in the former Yugoslavian region. The author situates the topic of the materiality of war and revolution within the broader context of Yugoslav cultural and memory politics. The memory transfer through the materiality of resistance is demonstrated on two levels: (1) How the “authenticity“ of the Yugoslav resistance sites — focusing on Partisan hospitals as one of the central topos of resistance — was treated by conservationists and by artists/architects, and how the traditional monument was rethought to serve as a bridge between the visitors and materiality in situ, and (2) how the material remains of the war were extracted from their original context, and reused in artistic works included in the museums of NOB or memorial houses. Finally, the chapter addresses the challenges related to the shifting value of material culture in various post-Yugoslav and post-socialist contexts.

Analizom višegodišnjih interdisciplinarnih terenskih istraživanja, te bilježenjem učinaka infrastrukturnih zahvata u prirodni okoliš Drežnice, članak doprinosi složenijem razumijevanju historijskih, društvenih i ekonomskih procesa suodnosa ljudi i prirodnog okoliša, kao ključnih odrednica moderniteta. Pitanje tko, kakvom tehnologijom i s kojim obećanjima upravlja krškim krajolikom, te u kojim se okolnostima i u čijem interesu javlja potreba njegove zaštite, sagledava se u duljem povijesnom trajanju s fokusom na promjene upravljanja Drežničkim poljem. Oslanjajući se na objavljene i arhivske izvore, članak postavlja širi ekohistorijski okvir za analizu suvremenog antropogenog utjecaja na Drežničko polje, na primjeru aktualnog projekta njegove retencije. Učinci hidroinžinjerskih zahvata na lokalnu zajednicu sagledavaju se kroz analitičku prizmu procesualne antropologije infrastrukture, a temelje na intervjuima s članovima lokalne zajednice i ekoloških udruga te na analizi birokratskog diskursa studija na okoliš.

This article presents an analysis of the effects of infrastructural interventions in the natural environment of Drežnica, based on many years of field research and an interdisciplinary approach to methodology. In this way, it contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the historical, social, and economic elements of the relationship between humans and the natural environment, as key notions of modernity. Several questions are addressed: who manages the karst landscape, using which technology, promising which results, under which circumstances, and whose interest it is to protect the landscape. These questions are considered from a longer historical perspective, with a focus on changes in the management model of Drežničko polje. Relying on published and archival sources, the article sets a broader eco-historical framework for the analysis of the contemporary anthropogenic impact on Drežničko polje, using the example of the current project of its retention. The effects of hydro-engineering operations on the local community are viewed through the analytical prism of processual anthropology of infrastructure, based on the analysis of the bureaucratic discourse of environmental policy studies and interviews with members of the local community and environmental organizations.

This paper will present the vicissitudes affecting the coastal archaeological heritage
of Boca do Rio since its discovery in the 18th century, due to the extreme maritime events
that exposed the site to marine erosion. In the following century, Estácio da Veiga and Santos
Rocha already reported on what the sea was washing away, to the point that in the 1930s, José
Formosinho had to save what remained of mosaics that had been drawn while still complete
just decades before. The unstoppable advance of the sea over the ruins continued, which
forced the University of Algarve, in partnership with the then Algarve Regional Directorate of
Culture, to salvage a mosaic and fragments of mural painting in 2010, due to the imminent
threat of destruction. Meanwhile, a study commissioned from experts in coastal geodynamics
put forward three solutions for safeguarding the coastal archaeological heritage that is
still under threat. Since 2017, a project by the University of Algarve in partnership with the
University of Marburg and the municipality of Vila do Bispo has enabled the in-depth study
of the site, including the impact of the receding coastline on the site’s seafront

Albania has inherited several structures that, during the communist dictatorship, served as sites of suffering for political prisoners and regime opponents. Since the fall of communism in the 1990s, there has been a limited effort to preserve and highlight this critical part of collective memory. The memory of these institutions and the atrocities that occurred within them has often been marginalised, forgotten, or suppressed in the national consciousness. Moreover, these cultural heritage sites face numerous risks, including seismic activity, floods, landslides, and human-caused threats.
This paper focuses on studying and documenting the suffering institutions during the communist dictatorship period. It proposes, as case studies, the preservation and revitalisation of Spaç Prison and the Forced Labour Camp in Tepelena, transforming them into museums of collective memory. The research was conducted in two main phases: first, an exploratory and documentary activity to identify and analyse the current state of the monuments, their historical changes, characteristics, risks from various disasters and their potential; second, emergency interventions for the preservation of the monuments, followed by restoration interventions and proposals for the evaluation, revitalisation, and reintegration of these sites into cultural and touristic life.
The conclusions emphasise the necessity of preserving and revitalising some of the institutions that suffered during the communist period, transforming them into places of remembrance for the regime's victims. The proposal to revitalise institutions suffering from dictatorship as museums of collective memory would promote awareness and education among younger generations, serving as a catalyst for boosting local tourism and the economy, creating new employment opportunities, and fostering sustainable development in the areas.

Bu çalışma, kültürel miras alanlarının korunmasında arkeoturizmin rolünü incelemekte ve Harpasa Antik Kenti örneği üzerinden değerlendirmeler yapmaktadır. Arkeoturizm, antik yerleşimlerin korunmasını sağlarken aynı zamanda bu alanların turizme kazandırılmasıyla yerel ekonomiye katkıda bulunmayı hedefleyen önemli bir turizm türüdür. Harpasa Antik Kenti de Arkaik Dönemden başlayarak kesintisiz bir yerleşim alanı olmuş ve sahip olduğu mimari yapılarıyla arkeoturizm açısından büyük bir potansiyeli barındırmaktadır. Çalışma, antik yerleşimin bu potansiyelini ortaya
koyarken, arkeoturizmin sürdürülebilirlik, koruma ve tanıtım açısından sunduğu fırsatları değerlendirmektedir. Ayrıca, arkeoturizm yoluyla yerel halkın kültürel mirasa katılımı ve bu alanların korunmasında bilinçlendirilmesinin önemi vurgulanmaktadır. Arkeoturizmin, kültürel mirasın korunmasında ve yerel ekonomilerin canlandırılmasında etkili bir araç olabileceği belirtilmekte ve Harpasa Antik Kenti’nin bu bağlamda nasıl değerlendirilebileceğine dair öneriler sunulmaktadır.

O relatório de conclusão de Mestrado Integrado em Gestão e Valorização do Património Histórico e Cultural aqui apresentado tem como principal objectivo a descrição e análise das várias actividades realizadas na Direcção Regional de Cultura de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. Cada actividade descrita neste relatório, esta ligada a diferentes áreas de actuação da Direcção Regional de Cultura de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. Todos eles foram realizados por mim durante os sete meses de estágio. As várias actividades estão divididas em três pontos: estudo, classificação e reabilitação do património Este relatório tem inicialmente uma análise sobre gestão e valorização do património, procurando contextualizar as várias actividades desempenhadas durante o estágio. Essa analise mostra a evolução do conceito de património e as apolíticas para a sua protecção e valorização, destacando o contributo do património na evolução económica e cultural dos centros urbanos.UNIVERSIDADE DE ÉVOR
