Goethe Studies

This special issue of EAP celebrates 25 years of publication and includes 19 invited essays organized in terms of four themes:
1. Place—lived emplacement, place attachment, and environmental design as place making;
2. Nature—the lived constitution of the natural environment and natural world;
3. Real-world applications of phenomenological principles (transit design; virtual reality; environmental education);
4. Broader conceptual issues (the subjectivity-objectivity duality; phenomenology vs. analytic science; phenomenology as practiced by non-phenomenologists; phenomenological understanding vs. practical applications; parallels between real-world and phenomenological pathways).

This summer/fall 2018 issue of Environmental & Architectural Phenomenology includes the following items:
• A “book note” on the recently published 2nd edition of philosopher Jeff Malpas’ groundbreaking Place and Experience: A Philosophical Topography, originally published in 1999. This expanded version includes a new chapter on place and technological modernity, “especially the seeming loss of place in the contemporary world.”
• A “book note” on EAP editor David Seamon’s recently published Life Takes Place: Phenomenology, Lifeworlds and Place Making, which gives particular attention to the generative aspects of place and locates six place processes that Seamon identifies as place interaction, place identity, place release, place realization, place intensification, and place creation.
• An essay by the late philosopher and science educator Henri Bortoft, who focuses on ways of thinking holistically, including the conceptual efforts of proto-phenomenologist Wolfgang Johann von Goethe; physicists Niels Bohr and David Bohm; and philosophers J. G. Bennett, Edmund Husserl, and Ludwig Wittgenstein.
• An essay by retired environmental educator John Cameron, who begins a new series of essays on the lived relationship between interiority and exteriority, particularly as qualities of the natural world and place contribute to that relationship.

One of the most significant moments in the development of German idealism is Schelling's break from his mentor Fichte. On account of its significance, there have been numerous studies examining the origin and meaning of this transition in Schelling's thought. Not one study, however, considers Goethe's influence on Schelling's development. This is surprising given the fact that in the fall of 1799 Goethe and Schelling meet every day for a week, to go through and edit what came to be Schelling's most path-breaking work. This paper considers Goethe's influence on the development of Schelling's thought, and argues that it was by appropriating Goethe's idea of metamorphosis that Schelling was able to put forth a conception of nature as independent from the mind.

This article investigates the intellectual history of the argument for the antiquity of Ex 34,11–26. In the contemporary debate about pentateuchal theory, a question that remains insufficiently addressed is how and why the idea originally developed that the unit represents an ancient, independent, pre-Deuteronomic legal source. Wellhausen credited the idea to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s »Zwo bisher unerörterte biblische Fragen …« (1773). Like Goethe, Wellhausen regarded the unit as a »ritual Decalogue,« in contrast to the »ethical Decalogue« of Exodus 20. The distinction helped Wellhausen consolidate the classical model of the documentary hypothesis: he attributed the cultic Decalogue to the Yahwist and the ethical one to the Elohist. Despite the importance of Goethe’s essay to the history of pentateuchal criticism, it is not clear that its arguments have previously been investigated. The article addresses equally Goethe's construction of the Jew as "other" and as particularistic, in contrast to the German Protestant as "self" and universal. The article demonstrates that Goethe could not have read read Spinoza's Tractatus, despite the common belief otherwise.

Abstract (French) :

Le synonyme le plus proche du terme "monstre" est l'expression « contre-nature » (Aristote, Saint Augustin, Canguilhem, Lascault, Cuny Le Callet, Valton, etc.). Sentence paradoxale s'il en est quand on sait qu'au niveau biologique, il est entendu que rien de ce que produit la Nature ne peut voir le jour indépendamment du respect de ses lois et qu'il est le propre de l'imagination de pouvoir y créer des exceptions.

Mais parallèlement à la Nature, objet de la biologie et de la physique, se trouve une autre « nature » : la « connaissance ordinaire » (Aristote employait pour sa part le terme de « cours ordinaire », « ὡς ἐπὶ τὸ πολύ » en parlant du statut contre-nature du monstre), cette « chose que l'organisme construit dans le but de créer un ordre dans le flux de l'expérience »

Ainsi, tout monstre peut être traduit comme étant ce qui apparaît contraire à une  « connaissance ordinaire », à une réalité sensible, dans son acception la plus large, c'est-à-dire orientée vers l'esthétique (le plus couramment rattaché à une vision anthropocentrée) et/ou vers l'éthique (intolérance idéologique).

Aussi par le partage des affects que met en œuvre une communauté d'esprits (religieuse, laïque, révolutionnaire, impérialiste, etc.), des éléments « contre-nature » peuvent apparaître à un niveau macrosociologique. Éléments émergeant de l'esprit gnostique et de son succédané l'esprit dogmatique, chacun ayant pour spécificité de mettre en exergue le dualisme entre bien et mal, connaissance et ignorance les entraînant ainsi vers l'ère de la déliquescence, de la décadence, en somme vers les temps eschatologiques et leurs abominations monstrueuses.


Abstract (English) :

The best synonym for the word ‘monster’ is the expression ‘unnatural’’ (Aristote, Saint Augustin, Canguilhem, Lascault, Cuny Le Callet, Valton, etc.). That is a paradoxical sentence - if any - when we know that biologically speaking nothing produced by Nature can exist regardless of the respect of its laws. It is among the characteristics of imagination to create exceptions.

But parallel to the Nature as objet of biology and physic is another kind of ‘nature’: the ‘ordinary knowledge’. (Artistote named it the ‘ordinary course’ (ὡς ἐπὶ τὸ πολύ) to mention the unnatural aspect of monster), this ‘thing that is produced by the organism to create an order within the experience’s flow’.

Then any monster can be understood as what appears in contrary to an ‘ordinary knowledge’, a ‘sensitive reality’ in every sense, that is to say aesthetics- (mostly associated to an anthropocentred vision) and/or ethicspositioned (ideological intolerance).

And the sharing of affections made by a minds’ community (religious, lay, revolutionary or imperialist, etc.) can reveal some ‘unnatural’ elements at the level of macrosociology. Elements that are emerging from the Gnostic spirit and its substitute: the dogmatic spirit. Each specifically brings out the dualism between good and evil, knowledge and ignorance that leads towards the decay, decline age - in other words towards eschatological times and their monstrous abominations.

Dieser Artikel ist die unveränderte Fassung einer Hauptseminararbeit, die ich während meines Magisterstudiums an der Universität Heidelberg eingereicht habe. Sie wurde mit der Note 1,0 benotet. I. Einleitung: die innere und äußere Natur -Psyche und Landschaft in "Werther" In dieser Arbeit werden zwei Briefe, nämlich den Brief vom 10. Mai 1771 und vom 18. August aus dem Roman "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" auf ihren syntaktischen Aufbau, ihre Semantik und gedanklichen Hintergrund hin eingehend untersucht. Ziel der Untersuchung ist, den Subjektivismus Werthers im Hinblick auf ihre literarische Realisierung, insbesondere in der Landschaftsbeschreibung klar darzustellen, und diesen anhand genauer Textanalyse in dem geistesgeschichtlichen Kontext zu verorten und ihm somit einen Sinn zu geben. Der Grund, gerade diese beiden Briefe auszuwählen, liegt darin, daß sie einen engen inhaltlichen Zusammenhang sowie analogen textualen Aufbau aufweisen. Der Brief vom 10. Mai wird inhaltlich wiedergegeben im Brief vom 18. August. Auf diese Wiedergabe folgt in demselben Brief eine Variation des Briefes vom 10. Mai, als letzter Teil des Briefs vom 18. August kommt dann eine Gegenüberstellung des Mai-Briefs, die aber textual ähnlich aufgebaut wird. Wenn man also die beiden Briefe, unbeschadet ihres großen zeitlichen Abstande, als ein Ganzes betrachtet, dann weisen sie eine Struktur von A A´ B auf, die oft in Liedern oder Gedichten zu finden ist. Der Grund, warum hier die Landschaftsbeschreibung untersucht wird, liegt darin, daß 1) die Natur seit Rousseau eine zentrale Rolle in der Philosophie wie auch in der Literatur spielt. Die Natur wird mit der Rehabilitation der Sinnlichkeit gleichfalls versinnlicht. Sie vereint in dieser Form das Sein und Sollen und besitzt somit einen normativen Charakter. Problem dabei ist dann, wie man Normenverletzungen begründen kann, wenn die Natur alles ist und sich alles an der Natur orientieren soll. Shaftesbury zum Beispiel behauptet, daß es kein wirkliches Böse gebe 1 . Die Abweichungen, das Nicht-Sein-Sollen werden als der Schein gegenüber zum Sein verstanden und damit begründet, daß der Mensch und die Gesellschaft sich irrtümlich von der Natur entfernt hätten 2 . A detailed, research-based introduction to the special section of the Goethe-Yearbook 22, 2015, which I co-edited with Luke Fischer. We explicate some of Goethe's most central ideas about nature, and the human relation to/place within nature, consider the significance of his thought and his methodology for contemporary environmental philosophy and the environmental humanities in general, situating him within the context of both fields, and address both his theoretical, scientific writings and his practice as a scientist and observer of nature.

In this article, I argue that Goethe’s way of science, understood as a phenomenology of nature, might be one valuable means for fostering a deeper sense of responsibility and care for the natural world. By providing a conceptual and lived means to allow the natural world to present itself in a way by which it might speak if it were able, Goethe’s method offers one conceptual and applied means to bypass the reductive accounts of nature typically produced by standard scientific and humanist perspectives. I illustrate this possibility largely through examples from Goethe’s Theory of Color (1810).

The paper seeks to interpret the concepts of nature and landscape in some of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Alexander von Humboldt works. Of them, while nature would be considered all of the natural phenomena, landscape is a fragment of this totality, embodied by the experience of a constantly trained eye. Therefore, landscape, either for Goethe or for Humboldt, is formulated by the desire to present it according to the aesthetic dimension, to say, it would be necessary sensitivity and imagination in order to notice nature in its whole. At the beginning of the article, the goethean notion of nature and landscape is shown throwing light on some of his romances and scientific studies, such as The Sorrows of Young Werther, Novel or story of a hunt and Metamorphosis of Plants. Following, it is shown the humboldtian understanding about both categories assimilated by poetry and science. Finally, it is analyzed some affinities and differences between the poet and the Prussian naturalist.

Physicist, philosopher, and science educator Henri Bortoft died on December 29, 2012, at his home in England. He was 74 years old. Bortoft’s work has an important conceptual and applied connection to this special issue of Phenomenology + Practice because it speaks to a particular mode of environmental encounter that might be called a “phenomenology of the natural world.” His work is central to “environmental practice” because he presents an empathetic way of engaging the phenomena of nature whereby they “reveal” themselves in an accurate and comprehensive way. Here, I offer my recollections of the man and his work. My aim is to describe some first-hand encounters with Bortoft and to suggest some of the ways that his work offers fruitful possibilities for “environmental phenomenology and environmental practice.”

ABSTRACT: "When August, Duke of Weimar, encountered Goethe´s Märchen, which had just been published anonymously in 1792, he send a note to the author, emphatically stating his conviction that “this so-called Fairy Tale must have flown from the same hand that wrote the Apokalypse of John!” Goethe responded, that he completely agreed with the Duke´s seemingly bold thesis, pointing out that the story had “indeed all characteristics of a prophecy, even the most prevalent one, namely to pertain to the present as well as to the past and the future.” Notwithstanding the humorous nature of this exchange, both statements are perplexing. Nothing seems, after all, to be further removed from the spiritualistic otherworldliness and the gloom and doom of biblical apocalypticism than the optimistic and life-affirming Weltanschauung that characterizes Goethe’s work. A closer look, however, reveals unexpected yet substantial similarities between Goethean thought and the basic characteristics of Judeo-Christian apocalypticism. His natural philosophy of Stirb und Werde, which understands the world in terms of polarities, organic cycles, metamorphoses and eternal progression, as well as the symbolic character of his poetic language correspond, in fact, to a large degree with form and content of traditional apocalyptic texts. No other text exemplifies this congeniality better than the Märchen itself, which is probably Goethe´s most enigmatic text. The poet inserted not only many explicit and subtle references to the biblical book of Revelation into this story, but also hinted repeatedly at a mysterious connection between both texts. By examining some of the core elements of the Märchen in the light of biblical eschatology, the study at hand argues that the seemingly absurd conversation between the Duke and poet actually reveals profound literary insight, in that it points our attention to the yet unnoticed implicit apocalypticism in this particular story and in Goethean thought altogether.

Das goethesche Märchen hat von jeher eine unübersehbare Fülle von Interpretationen hervorgerufen. Neben philosophischen, ästhetischen, biographischen, psychologischen und politischen Auslegungsversuchen stehen theologische, alchymistische, anthroposophische und freimaurerische Deutungen. Die Interpretationsgeschichte ist so unüberschaubar, und die Auslegungsansätze so verschieden, dass es nicht verwundert, dass einige Interpreten den Text für prinzipiell undeutbar erklärt haben.  Die vorliegende Analyse versucht, die rätselhafte Natur des Märchens besser zu verstehen, indem sie es in den Zusammenhang mit der biblischen Apokalyptik, insbesondere der Johannesoffenbarung, stellt. Trotz einer Reihe von eindeutigen motivischen Anleihen und trotz mehrerer deutlicher Fingerzeige von Goethe selbst, ist das Verhältnis des Märchens zur apokalyptischen Tradition bisher noch nicht eingehend untersucht worden. Diesem Mangel hilft die vorliegende Analyse ab, indem sie nachweist, dass Bildersprache und Theologie der biblischen Eschatologie als wesentliche Quelle für den Gehalt des Märchens zu gelten haben. Indem das Märchen in die Tradition der Apokalyptik gestellt wird, soll jedoch nicht den bestehenden allegorischen und symbolischen Deutungen des Märchens eine weitere hinzugefügt werden. Es geht vielmehr darum, zu verstehen, in welchem Maße es die symbolisch-allegorische Natur der apokalyptischen Bild- und Gedankenwelt selbst ist, die einerseits mehrere in sich stimmige Deutungen ermöglicht und sich andererseits – sowohl im Märchen wie in der Johannesoffenbarung - einer letztgültigen Deutung prinzipiell entzieht. Indem apokalyptische Bilder, in Goethes Formulierung, sich „auf das Vergangene wie auf das Gegenwärtige und Zukünftige“ beziehen, ist ihr Gehalt ein unendlicher, organisch-wandelbarer und wird von jeder Epoche, ja von jedem Individuum, auf neue Weise gedeutet werden  müssen. Die Einfühlung in die apokalyptische Dimension des Märchens kann somit helfen, die eigentümliche Natur dieser Dichtung und ihrer Rezeptionsgeschichte besser zu verstehen.""

Not only was the story really all about Snape, and not about, say, Harry. It turns out Snape is a key to many things, as is typically the main character in the  Bildungsroman tradition. Snape is important because he helps us think about the limits of what we can know about the contradictions of liberal educational philosophy, including the politics of aesthetics.

The role of darkness has been overlooked by philosophical theories of color. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Theory of Colors gives a special metaphysical status to darkness, but his romantic-holistic phenomenology applies its principle to color phenomena perhaps too closely, and in the end he misses the opportunity to say anything ontological about metaphysical darkness. On the other hand, in his essay “Eye and Mind,” Maurice Merleau-Ponty critiques the prevailing Cartesian achromatic optics in favor of the aesthetic optics of Paul Cezanne, and goes so far as to introduce what he calls “the dimension of color” (Merleau-Ponty 141) to counter the primacy of the Cartesian res extensa, but misses the opportunity to ground it in the special phenomena of darkness. The place of darkness in Goethe’s Theory of Colors fulfills what was lacking in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of “the dimension of color” (141), and Merleau- Ponty contributes an ontology to Goethe’s Theory of Colors.

"A large gold ring, set with an oval paste-intaglio of 19 x 15 mm, together with a letter by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)  was recently sold in New York . The auction-catalogue described this ring as having been previously owned by Goethe, and engraved c.1826 by Angelica Facius (1806-1887). (...) The Lempertz-Christie’s ring is undoubtedly a genuine late Georgian / Biedermeier gold ring, set with a paste-impression. Its Goethe-provenance is not attested, nor is Angelica Facius’ authorship: why Lempertz believed it is still uncertain. But it remains nevertheless an attractive collector’s item."

The text is historically notable among others insofar as Schröer introduces  in it the young Steiner to the scholarly world. With the onset of modernity, the study of poetry emerged as a legitimate academic discipline. Conversely, authors became connected to a specialized discipline that organized and expanded knowledge about German literature. For the first time, the studies in this volume systematically discuss this connection using the philological practice and poetology of expressionist authors and the works of Holz, Mann, Stadler, Broch, Schaeffer, and Borchardt.

The canonized image of Goethe as cosmopolite-poet counts as one of the most significant visions of the author. The production and reproduction of knowledge around the cosmopolitan Goethe is itself a pattern of cultural narration which deserves thorough investigation. German sinologists as a special group of Goethe interpreters attract my attention as they develop a comparative approach to Goethe and his works, deploying their professional knowledge of Chinese culture and poetics. In this article, I explore Goethe-studies by different generations of prominent German China-experts from Richard Wilhelm and Otto Franke to Wolfgang Bauer and Günther Debon and I argue that they extend the horizon of cognition and interpretation towards an in-between-space of cultures and semiotic systems where Goethe’s cosmopolitanism adopts new nuances and meanings. Their various assertions of Goethe’s “Chineseness” display exactly the speculative and constructive character of their writings and also indicate their own diverse ideological inclinations in shaping their Goethe-images.

Alors que la récente exposition de la Fondation Martin Bodmer  – Genève –  a mis
l’accent sur la place de la France dans le travail de Goethe et que l’attention s’attache de nouveau à la pensée goethéenne de façon insistante en ce début de XXIe siècle, il s’agit, dans le cadre transfrontalier et transdisciplinaire du laboratoire ILLE, de réévaluer ce que donne à penser aujourd’hui cette grande figure européenne qui a développé la notion de Weltliteratur. Goethe relève du domaine du mythe par son caractère fondateur et son immense retentissement : de Balzac – qui place La Comédie humaine sous l’autorité du «grand Goethe » – à  Valéry – avec Mon Faust, le Discours sur Goethe (1932) ou l’introduction au Poésies de Goethe (1946), avec Thomas Mann et Doktor Faustus  (1947), Giono et le Faust au village (1949) ou Butor et l’opéra Votre Faust (1969). Le cinéma n’est pas absent si l’on pense au Faust, une légende allemande, réalisé par Murnau en 1926 ou au Lion d’or de la Mostra de Venise en 2012 : le Faust, d’Alexandre Sokourov. On sait aussi que Hegel, Nietzsche, Marx ou Dilthey ont lu l’écrivain avec enthousiasme.

O texto ensaia as noções de natureza e paisagem assimiladas na primeira semana de viagem de Goethe à Itália (de 3 a 10 de setembro de 1786). Nesses primeiros dias do itinerário percorrido ainda em terras germânicas, ambas as categorias orbitam no universo reflexivo do poeta: enquanto que a natureza dá voz a polaridades afins – empiria e sensibilidade, unidade e multiplicidade, objetivo e subjetivo – a paisagem seria um recorte da natureza apreendido sensivelmente, um quadro da natureza formulado pelo olhar (sentidos) treinado de um observador atento e localizado sobretudo no âmbito da estética. Busca-se, portanto, compreender a paisagem contemplada por Goethe para além das descrições geográficas dos lugares visitados e visualizados, mas privilegiando a conversão da natureza em arte.

1. Faust und Phänomenologie-eine falsche Parallele? In der Ästhetik von Hegel findet sich eine bekannte Stelle, wo Hegel den Goethe-schen Faust als eine " absolute philosophische Tragödie" bezeichnet, als ein Werk, wo " überhaupt die tragisch versuchte Vermittlung des subjektiven Wissens und Strebens mit dem Absoluten" dargestellt sei. 1 Diese Stelle scheint die weitverbreitete Meinung zu bestätigen, daß es zwischen Hegels Philosophie, vor allem in der Fassung wie sie in der 1807 erschienenen Phänomenologie vorlag, und Goethes Faust eine geistige Wahlverwandtschaft gebe, in dem Sinne, daß Hegels und Goethes weltanschauliche Positionen sich größtenteils decken und zu wesentlich denselben Resultaten in den Werken beider führen. Diese Ansicht trifft man schon bei den frühen Hegel-Schülern, unter anderem beim Herausgeber der Ästhetik-Vorlesungen Heinrich Hotho, oder beim Hegel-Biographen Karl Rosenkranz. Letzterer schrieb, daß Goethes Faust " die Tragödie des Geistes selber" darstelle. Jene Deutungstradition, die den Begriff des Geistes objektiv-idealistisch rezipiert, erreichte ihren Gipfel in Julius Fischers Ver-such, nicht nur die Phänomenologie, sondern sogar die Wissenschaß der Logik als eine philosophische Parallele zum Faust zu konstruieren. 2

This paper argues that Cassirer's thinking about the relationship between the different symbolic forms is best elucidated via the paradigm of "organic harmony." Although Cassirer did not use the term himself, the harmonious cooperation between the parts found in the organic world provided him with a welcome alternative to traditional accounts of order (i.e. identity or hierarchy). This paper will give three examples of "organic harmony": Goethe and his idealistic morphology, Wilhelm von Humboldt's account of language, Herder's account of history. The thought of all three example key characteristics of "organic harmony": holism, particularism/perspectivism, and subjective judgment. This paper will show that Cassirer's own "organic harmony" is indebted to these thinkers. From the perspective of "organic harmony" we can make better sense of the pluralistic spirit of Cassirer's PSF as well as providing it with greater theoretical articulation. This paper also shows how the motif of organic harmony is the normative moment in his own challenge to 20 th c. fascism. Finally, this paper argues that the Cassirerian emphasis on finding a coherence which does justice to the uniqueness of particulars-i.e. harmony-is an ethical injunction relevant for our times.

Commençant par des études géologiques, étudiant ensuite les formes organiques, [Goethe] finit par arriver, au soir d'une longue vie, aux phénomènes sociaux et religieux " (Dilthey) JeanClaude Gens Emblématique dans la culture allemande, la figure de Goethe a pris divers visages et connu des périodes de relative éclipse au cours des XIX et XX e siècles. L'essai de Dilthey consacré à " Goethe et la fantaisie poétique " et intégré en 1906 à Das Erlebnis und die Dichtung (L'expérience vécue et la poésie) contribue à une nouvelle réception du poète 1 . Mais on peut se demander ce que l'oeuvre goethéenne a pu apporter au projet diltheyen de fondation des sciences dites humaines ou de l'esprit, qui, face aux sciences de la nature, sont essentiellement des sciences historiques. Car il semble au premier abord y avoir un abîme entre ce projet de fondation et la reconnaissance de Goethe comme " prince des poètes ". Et on pourrait donc ne voir qu'une comparaison rétrospective et osée entre leurs travaux, lorsque Hugo von Hoffmannsthal écrit :

Als ein "Gegengewicht im Zeitgeist" bezeichnete der junge Arthur Schopenhauer Goethes Rolle in einem Zeitalter, das auf der anderen Seite maßgeblich durch die Philosophie Immanuel Kants geprägt war. Goethe gehörte auch zu den wenigen Gesprächspartnern Schopenhauers, der sich lebenslang "schrecklich einsam gefühlt" 1 habe. Zwischen November 1813 und Mai 1814 kam es zu persönlichen Begegnungen, wohl auch gemeinsamen Farbexperimenten, zwischen dem um 39 Jahre älteren Goethe und dem 25-jährigen Philosophen, der kurz zuvor in Jena mit einer Arbeit Ueber die vierfache Wurzel des Satzes vom zureichenden Grunde (1813) zum Doktor der Philosophie avanciert war. Goethe erhoffte sich, seinen Gesprächspartner für seine Theorie der Farben (1810) zu gewinnen und die Zustimmung zu erhalten, welche sein Zeitalter ihm bisher versagt hatte. Schopenhauer hingegen wollte keineswegs die Adeptenrolle übernehmen, sondern trug seine differierenden Ansichten Goethe gegenüber selbstbewusst vor. Resultat dieser Unterhaltungen bildete Schopenhauers Schrift Über das Sehn und die Farben (1816), in der er seine eigene Theorie der Farben präsentierte, die in wesentlichen Punkten -wie der Herstellung des Weißen und der Entstehung des Violetten -von Goethes Farbenlehre abwich.

The article in Russian deals with August von Platen’s – an outstanding German romantic poet (1796–1835) – search for sources of inspiration, using ‘close reading’ as a basic interpretative method in gender poetics. In this article, for this purpose, the so-called Goethe’s ‘gender canon’, embracing specific Goethe’s works created between 1774 and 1821, was analyzed. This period of Goethe‘s creativity is a subject of fierce controversies in contemporary literary criticism, but specifically this period proved to be the most important for Platen’s formation as a minority poet.

Rich in exclamations and ellipses, Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther inhabits a linguistic space in German that does not immediately lend itself to literal translation. Its first translations into Japanese and Chinese coincided with periods of linguistic innovation, as writers and translators contributed to the development of vernacular writing. While in Japanese versions the rendered text faithfully evinces intermediate stages of vernacularization, Guo Moruo's 1922 translation represents a radical attempt to reshape language. By finding literal equivalents of Goethe's stylistic idiosyncrasies, Guo actively shapes the Chinese vernacular, i.e. he establishes the syntactical usage of an exclamation particle plus an exclamation mark. Since German and Chinese belong to different language families, his translation artificially creates intralingual affinities.

Der Briefwechsel zwischen Goethe und Tieck beginnt im Jahr 1798 und endet am 24. September 1829.  In diesen 31 Jahren ist aber die Beziehung zwischen den beiden Dichtern voller Spannungen und Missverständnissen. Man kann nicht einen Diskurs über Ludwig Tieck beginnen, ohne auf das Verhältnis der Haßliebe zwischen dem romantischen Geist Tieck's und dem olympischen Goethe zu stoßen. Es wird tatsächlich sofort ein Zweifel ausgeraumt, der viel zu lange die Gelehrten geprägt hatte: Der goetische Faust und die zwei Teile des Gestiefelten Katers (der zweite Teil, also Prinz Zerbino, wurde bisher zugunsten des ersten vernachlaßigt) sind zueinander antithetisch zu sehen, wenn auch in gewisser Weise-parallel.

The work of Walter Benjamin on Goethe's Novel The elective affinities is a masterpiece of literary critics. The first part of this work considers the decadence of marriage as a liberation of mythical forces, the second opposes the form novel to the minor form, the short narration, the third part tries to expose the problem of the Hope related to the constellation of Truth and Beauty. Our article attempts a lecture of Benjamin´s work and Goethe´s Novel from the opposition of voluntary memory (the one of culture, choice, volition and marriage) and ancestral memory (the one of nature, necessity, compulsion and elective affinities).

This article examines analogies and differences between the Prometheus' myth of Plato Protagoras and the fifth Act of the Second Part of Goethe's Faust. While Goethe thinks that natural pressure is sufficient and necessary condition to build the political community, the Protagoras´ myth values this pressure as a necessary but not as a sufficient condition. To obtain a political community the sufficient condition is the political virtue, given by Zeus and distributed by Hermes. Protagoras is a democrat and Goethe has reticence to democratic thinking. In Protagoras there is a naive confidence in human being, in Goethe a bitter consciousness of its limits.

La investigación siguiente se concentra en el artículo de Hans-Georg Gadamer “Prometeo y Pandora”, aparecido originalmente en español en 1949 en el volumen "Goethe. 1749 - 28 de agosto – 1949", editado por la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Cuyo, Argentina. En primer lugar, se ofrece una introducción en la que se presenta el contexto original histórico-intelectual de su edición, traducción y publicación, los antecedentes filosóficos del texto dentro de la obra de Gadamer (conferencias y artículos previos sobre el tema), una presentación breve de las fuentes y de los temas que trata el texto, así como una serie de aclaraciones sobre las correcciones que se realizaron para esta edición crítica. Este ensayo es uno de los dos primeros trabajos de Gadamer que fueron traducidos al castellano y, a su vez, una de las primeras traducciones de las producciones de Gadamer a una lengua extranjera.
/-/The following investigation focuses on the article of Hans-Georg Gadamer entitled “Prometheus and Pandora”, originally published in Spanish in 1949, in the book: "Goethe. 1749 – 28th August – 1949", edited by the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Cuyo, Argentina. Firstly, an introduction is offered in which is presented the original historical-intellectual context of its edition, translation, and publication, the philosophical background of the text within Gadamer’s work (conferences and previous articles on the subject), a brief description of the sources and topics encompassed in the text, as well as a series of clarifications on the corrections made for the current critical edition. This essay is one of the first two works by Gadamer that were translated into Spanish and, in turn, one of the first translations of Gadamer's productions into a foreign language.

Zusammenfassung-Die Aussagekraft des Begriffes des Bildungsromans steht im Zentrum dieses Artikels und wird anhand wesentlicher Momente der Begriffsbildung beleuchtet. Die Absicht dabei ist aufzuzeigen, dass der Begriff nie in exakt geprägt wurde, und dass es daher unvermeidlich wurde, ihn in Frage zu stellen oder gar ganz zu verwerfen, zumindest, was die Forschung zu Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre betrifft. Lorsque le jeune Johann Wolfgang Goethe reçoit des mains de son père la maquette d'un bateau aux formes bizarres, il ne sait pas encore combien ce jouet sera porteur de sens et qu'il permettra d'ajouter au patrimoine intellectuel de l'Humanité une oeuvre magnifique, les fameuses Épigrammes vénitiennes dont on n'a compris le sens que bien après leur publication. Venise rappelait hier la mémoire du grand poète avec la pose d'une plaque sur la façade de la maison qu'il habita lors de son second séjour en 1790. La gondole miniature oubliée depuis longtemps par le conseiller du prince devenu un écrivain célèbre, poète renommé et philologue respecté dont la réputation dépasse depuis longtemps les frontières d'Allemagne, lui revint en mémoire ce jeudi 28 septembre 1786. Il décrit l'émotion très proustienne qui s'empara de lui lorsque, le navire sur lequel il avait voyagé sur le Brenta déboucha dans les eaux de la lagune de Venise, il vit s'approcher les gondoles venues prendre les voyageurs pour les mener jusqu'à la cité des doges. Un mois exactement après son anniversaire (Il a eu 37 ans un mois auparavant jour pour jour) et deux mois après celui de son père, Johann Caspar Goethe qui ramena de son périple italien cet objet qui fit tant rêver le fils. Une certaine manière de se retrouver chez soi. Ce voyage longtemps désiré et minutieusement préparé, qu'il remit déjà à deux reprises, le voilà enfin qui s'accomplit. Dans la tradition établie depuis une centaine d'années qui veut que tout jeune homme de bonne famille fasse ce Grand Tour sans lequel son éducation resterait incomplète, le Voyage en Italie dont il publiera le récit dans les années 1815-pratiquement en même temps que le Rome, Naples et Florence de Stendhal-est un peu une fuite. Goethe est une célébrité en Allemagne et sa renommée fait de lui un personnage très en vue. A la manière des people d'aujourd'hui, invité et fêté partout. ses faits et gestes sont suivis et commentés en permanence. C'est donc une personne publique qui part en catimini de Karlsbad où viennent d'être organisées de grandes réjouissances pour son anniversaire. Début septembre, fatigué de tout cela, sollicité voire harcelé, il part enfin. A chacune de ses précédentes tentatives et pour des raisons diverses, il n'avait jamais dépassé le col du Saint Gothard. Cette fois, il part pour de bon et le périple durera plusieurs mois. Comme le souligne Eric Leroy du Cardonnoy 2 , Goethe se doit aussi de mettre ses pas sur ceux de son père qui fit le même voyage en 1740. Les gravures et les objets que Johann Caspar ramena avaient frappé l'imagination du fils qui en resta fortement marqué. La maquette de gondole qu'il lui était interdit de toucher notamment... Mais compte-tenu de la personnalité de Goethe, ce voyage parfaitement préparé, autant qu'on pouvait le faire à son époque, tant matériellement que d'un point de vue culturel, devait parfaire et dépasser celui du père. Et c'est le coup de foudre pour la Sérénissime. Sa découverte de la République des Castors le remplit d'enthousiasme et de joie. Son Volkmann 3 sous le bras comme le feront cent ans plus tard les voyageurs avec leur Baedeker (et aujourd'hui le Guide Bleu ou le Routard), il arpente les ruelles étroites et les campi, visite palais et couvents, assiste à des séances du Tribunal, se promène au marché et le soir sur la Piazza, va au spectacle... Mais le plus important pour lui est ce retour en enfance que provoque l'arrivée à Venise vécue comme un nouveau départ pour cet homme célèbre de trente-sept ans... "Ainsi il était écrit dans le livre de la Destinée, à ma page, qu'en 1786, le 28 septembre à cinq heures du soir, heure de chez nous, j'apercevrais pour la première fois Venise, en débouchant de la Brenta dans les lagunes, et que peu après je débarquerais dans cette merveilleuse ville insulaire, dans cette république de castors,
