Funerary Epigraphy

Las estelas epigráficas de Palacios de la Sierra forman parte de un conjunto recuperado en las excavaciones de la necrópolis de El Castillo en los años 70. Hasta la fecha, la interpretación propuesta para aquellas con epígrafes reconocibles las consideraba de la II Edad del Hierro debido a que, en teoría, portaban grafías ibéricas. A diferencia de esta propuesta, el trabajo plantea una nueva lectura de las estelas epigráficas partiendo de la base de que las grafías se realizaron en letra visigótica y recogen nombres y palabras en latín. Por tanto, rectifica una interpretación errónea basada en una lectura incorrecta. El resultado reubica al conjunto dentro de las de manifestaciones funerarias de la Alta Edad Media, y viene a ampliar el corpus de inscripciones de este tipo que se conocen en el área de la primitiva Castilla y Álava, con las que encuentra un parangón evidente.

Il mondo antico è il prezioso custode di una lingua, il latino, che è madre della nostra. Proprio alla luce del legame con il passato, possiamo rileggere le nostre radici con uno sguardo attuale e moderno e comprendere in maniera più completa noi stessi e il presente, frutto di tale eredità. Per immergerci via via in quel mondo più che mai vivo e affascinante, che ancora ci parla e ci fa pensare, seguiremo il doppio filone della cultura e della lingua. Da un lato si approfondisce un aspetto della storia e della vita nella Roma antica, con spunti di lettura e di riflessione tratti da un grande autore latino, e dall’altro si assaporano le sfumature e le finezze della grammatica, divertendosi ad applicarle con esercizi e giochi.
In questo volume scopriremo come ai tempi dell’Impero romano le persone comuni – tanto in Europa, quanto in Africa e nel Vicino Oriente – costruissero, custodissero e trasmettessero la propria memoria.
Vedremo da vicino dei testi di poeti anonimi giunti fino a noi attraverso il tempo, spesso in frammenti. Infine, verrà fatta un’analisi linguistica e retorica su alcuni brani scelti.

This study examines Rudolf Heberdey’s (1864–1936) epigraphic work on Ephesian funerary inscriptions in the British Museum, emphasizing his documentation methods and their relevance to modern research. Utilizing archival material from the former "Kleinasiatische Kommission" of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, it explores Heberdey’s engagement with inscriptions transported to London by J.T. Wood (1863–1874). Dissatisfied with prior editions, Heberdey created Scheden—detailed manuscript sheets incorporating transcriptions, observations, and drawings—refining previous readings and adding further information gained from autopsy.. Applying the analytical framework of multilayered written artefacts, the study examines Heberdey’s manuscripts and two inscriptions (I.Ephesos 1636 and 1629), revealing textual modifications and interpretative challenges. The research highlights the interplay between primary and secondary textual layers in the inscriptions, considering physical modifications and their implications for funerary practices. It underscores Heberdey’s meticulous methodology and advocates for multilayered analysis in contemporary epigraphic documentation to enhance understanding of inscriptional transmission and reuse.

This study presents the edition of a set of 42 previously unpublished funerary inscriptions, documented during an archaeological intervention carried out between 2022 and 2023 at a site located at Juan Ramón Jiménez n.º 3, in the city of Cádiz. The location corresponds to the necropolis of Roman Gades, situated on the ancient island of Kotinoussa. The rich epigraphic evidence recovered during this excavation –of which a new selection is presented here, adding to the materials published in recent works– constitutes a significant contribution to the understanding of funerary epigraphic practices in the city between the mid-1st century CE and the 3rd century. Within this chronological framework, the analysed inscriptions not only reproduce conventional funerary formulas but also incorporate an onomastic corpus of particular interest, which enhances and refines our knowledge of local anthroponymy.

This paper aims at providing a diachronic account of the cultural and academic
presence of Hellenistic poetry in the country and the impact of the research
group Hellenistica engaged in the growth of the field, adding a systematic
overview to the thriving history of Classics in Brazil.

Il presente lavoro analizza gli epigrammi dell'Anthologia Graeca inclusi nella serie sulle madri morte di parto (AP 7.163-168; AP 7.462-465; AP 7.528; AP 7.729-730), ai quali si aggiunge lo studio di due epigrafi sepolcrali inerenti alla tematica dell'aborto (GV 846 [Smirne, I sec. a.C.]; GV 873 [Acaia, I sec. d.C.]).

This proposal aims to investigate the relationship between language choices and identity reflections within Hellenistic Pamphylian funerary epigraphy using a statistical approach. By employing Social Network Analysis (SNA), this study will focus on funerary epitaphs from the dialect-speaking community of Hellenistic Aspendos in Pamphylia. Through SNA, I will explore which language features were utilized as markers of identity and how language choices interact with other markers of identity.

Esta noticia relata brevemente el desarrollo del Congreso Esclavos y libertos en Ostia (desde finales de la República a Diocleciano) celebrado el 15 y 16 de junio del 2023 en la Escuela española de Historia y Arqueología en Roma (EEHAR - CSIC). Esta reunión organizada por los profesores Maria Letizia Caldelli (Sapienza Università di Roma) y Pedro López Barja de Quiroga (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela), bajo la coordinación científica de Antonio Pizzo (EEHAR - CSIC) se encuadró en el proyecto Libertos y libertas en Ostia (s. I a.C. - III d.C.): Movilidad social e identidad de grupo (PID2020-114696GB-I00. Agencia Estatal de Investigación. Plan Nacional 2021 - Generación de Conocimiento), y en ella se presentó la base de datos open access Corpus libertorum et libertarum ostiensium (www.libost.es), fruto del dicho proyecto.

Le iscrizioni funerarie, pur avendo dei limiti intrinseci, costituiscono una fonte preziosa per ricostruire in parte il profilo demografico delle comunità locali, fornendo informazioni quali l'età al momento della morte, il sesso, il nome e, in alcuni casi, la professione o il ruolo sociale del defunto (Shaw, 1996, pp. 67-69).

E tra punico e romano, romano e vandalo o bizantino, e prima ancora tra mauro, numida e punico o romano, processi del genere si rivelano numerosi ed eloquenti. Va detto inoltre che molte sono le città e le fattorie romane o bizantine che non hanno trovato prosieguo nella rete poleografica araba ed islamica, spesso assai diversa, limitando così ilfenomeno del reimpiego e consentendo invece i recuperi monumentali dei grandi scavi europei dell 'Ottocento e del primo Novecento. Da questo ombelico delle culture umane quale può definirsi il Mediterraneo, l'Africa romana recita quindi il ruolo di dispensiera di insegnamenti fondamentali, di modelli irrinunciabili per la storia civile, quando si considerino quali esempi di assetto dell 'ambiente e di governo delle risorse si ricavano dallo studio della storia cartaginese e della storia romana. Carico quindi di molti significati è il grazie che gli studiosi rivolgono alle istituzioni che promuovono i Convegni sassaresi su «L'Africa romana», ed ai valorosi protagonisti dell 'iniziativa: Attilio Mastino anzitutto, Sandro Schipani e Giovanni Brizzi. in ink on a ceramic shard. is document gives us an idea of the socio-economic and
even legal relationships between the members of the local society that once occupied
this site. From this document, it is clear that any kind of act between members of civil
society, especially when it comes to lending money, was done according to legal rules.

Las inscripciones del "mausoleo de los Pompeyos" de Torreparedones (Baena, Córdoba). Apuntes sobre las relaciones familiares 1 José Beltrán Fortes 2 Recibido: 5 de junio de 2020 / Aceptado: 22 de octubre de 2020 Resumen. La serie de doce inscripciones sepulcrales grabadas en urnas pétreas del "mausoleo de los Pompeyos" (Torreparedones, Baena, Córdoba), aparecidas en 1833, constituye sin duda el testimonio epigráfico más completo y significativo del proceso de incorporación a la ciudadanía romana y latinización onomástica en Hispania. Del análisis de la documentación generada por Aureliano Fernández-Guerra en 1834 se plantea una nueva hipótesis sobre las relaciones familiares de los individuos citados en ellas, estableciendo como hipótesis un nuevo stemma de la familia Pompeia. The article presents two tituli sepulcrales found in the northern portion of the territory of the city of Benevento, which contribute to enrich the knowledge of the epigraphic heritage of the area. In addition, the evidence of an Augustale is important for the study of this college and for its presence, not only in the city, but also in the surrounding area. Finally, the two inscriptions are significant for a better understanding of the population dynamics of the area between the first and second imperial age.

L’articolo contribuisce ad arricchire lo studio sul patrimonio epigrafico del comune di Ponte (BN) con cinque nuove acquisizioni di tituli sepulcrales. Inoltre tali iscrizioni forniscono dati significativi per una miglior comprensione delle dinamiche di popolamento dell’area fra la prima e la seconda età imperiale.

Resumen: el siguiente trabajo establece un balance historiográfico de los estudios sobre gladiatura y anfiteatros en la región de la zona oriental de la Tarraconense, particularmente en las ciudades con evidencia de anfiteatros romanos y actividad de la munera gladiatoria, especialmente en Cataluña. Para ello consideramos el contexto histórico y arqueológico de la gladiatura en dicha región; aspectos como la excavación de un limitado número de anfiteatros, como de Emporion, Barcino y, principalmente, el yacimiento de Tarraco, de la capital de la Hispania Citerior, posteriormente llamada la Tarraconensis, en su parte más oriental. Igualmente serán considerados los estudios de materiales arqueológicos, epigráficos e iconográficos vinculados, en dicha región, a la actividad gladiatoria, sistematizando la información historiográfica generada hasta el momento, discutiendo la problemática regional sobre la temática establecida. El estudio historiográfico permite conocer el estado de la cuestión, las discusiones más relevantes en la materia con el fin de establecer los trabajos de investigación a futuro.

The funerary space in Late Republican and Early Imperial epigraphy of Rome presents a specific formulary – the indicatio pedaturae – that allows us to reason about the measurements of burial plots. By correlating this data with the contexts in which the cippus were found along the road axes, it is possible to attempt to reconstruct the suburban funerary
landscape and the economy that revolved around these loca. In the present contribution, it will consider the terms related to funerary enclosures identified within the III mile of via Latina, trying to grasp the criteria of definition and measurement of the funerary space along the initial stretch of this important road axis.

Cette intervention porte sur le phénomène de l'apparition de l'épigraphie funéraire en Grèce archaïque. Après avoir fait le point sur la vision dominante actuelle sur les funéraires (1), et tenté de convaincre que cette lecture (ou ces lectures) est, au mieux, partielle, et, de toutes manières, insatisfaisante du point de vue historique, il a été proposé d'opérer d’abord un retour à la documentation (2). Puis une autre vision de celle-ci (4) est suggérée, non sans faire un détour par quelques cas d’étude hors de Grèce, et hors de l’Antiquité (3) avec quelques cas d'études comme les stèles basques (époque moderne), les stèles juives (époque médiévale) et armoricaines (VIe-Ve av. n.è.) ou encore certains épisodes de la Genèse.

El món funerari romà, molt ritualitzat-per més que aquesta ritualitat evolucionés amb el temps, variarà segons la zona, o no es plasmés per igual en funció de la classe social, el nivell intel•lectual o el poder adquisitiu-, no va explicar, però, amb una concepció escatològica única, que depengués de les actituds personals dels diferents posicionaments al respecte, de tot allò que envoltava el funus, i del plantejament filosòfic individual o familiar davant del fet mateix de morir i el concepte d'ultratomba. En el procés, van tenir un paper important els quatre elements, potser no de manera conscient ni racionalitzada, però sí profundament lligada a Roma com a civilització i cultura; cosa que en part és possible derivar dels textos de l'època-inclosa l'epigrafia-, però també dels testimonis materials. És aquesta visió transversal i una mica atípica, per inèdita, la que pretén abordar aquest treball, que tractarà de dilucidar la presència i el paper dels quatre elements al funus romà.

This article discusses curses found in ancient and late antique Jewish funerary inscriptions. It begins with a typology of imprecatory texts based on a survey of funerary epigraphy, both Jewish and non-Jewish. It proceeds with an analysis of explicit curse formulae found in a Jewish funerary context: on ossuaries, on the walls of burial caves, or on architectural elements of graves. The article discusses several aspects of these curses, placing them in a physical, religious, and psychological context.

Resumen: El descubrimiento casual del sarcófago antropomorfo sidonio en 1887 despertó una gran
expectación tanto entre la población y las autoridades gaditanas como en los especialistas contemporáneos, hasta
el punto de que fueron muchos los investigadores que se interesaron por su estudio, así como por el del esqueleto
hallado en su interior, aunque nunca se dudó que correspondiera a un varón como presagiaba la representación
esculpida en su tapa. Nuestro objetivo con este trabajo es demostrar, por una parte, que la exhibición del
esqueleto y los continuos traslados de la pieza provocaron el deterioro irremediable de los restos –del que dan
cuenta los estudiosos del momento– y la sustitución de los huesos originales por otros. En segundo lugar,
intentaremos determinar el sexo del individuo inhumado mediante el análisis de las fotografías tomadas durante
la apertura del féretro y de los primeros estudios antropológicos llevados a cabo en los años inmediatamente
posteriores a su hallazgo, antes del reemplazo del esqueleto. A pesar de las dificultades, creemos que contamos
con datos suficientes para proponer que, frente a la idea generalizada, los restos originales podrían corresponder
a un individuo de sexo femenino.

Abstract: The unexpected discovery of the Sidonian anthropomorphic sarcophagus in 1887 raised great
expectation among the population and the authorities of Cadiz, as well as contemporary specialists. Thus,
many researchers became interested in the study of both the sarcophagus and the skeleton found inside. The
skeleton was presumed to be male as the representation sculpted on its lid presaged. The purpose of this work
is to evidence that the exhibition of the skeleton and the piece’s continuous transfers caused the irremediable
deterioration of the remains over time as it was reported by scholars and the replacement of the original bones
for others. Additionally, we aim to determine the sex of the buried individual by analyzing photographs taken
during the coffin opening and the first anthropological studies carried out in the immediate years after the
discovery before the replacement of the skeleton. Despite the difficulties, we believe to have enough evidence to
propose that, in contrast to the widespread perception, the original remains could correspond to an individual
of the female sex.

In this paper, we present and discuss a promising research avenue, that is the use of graphbased models and software for prosopographical data sets. Our case study will be constituted by Romans 1by1 (http://romans1by1.com/), a digital-born prosopography focusing on people attested in classical era inscriptions; it presently hosts approximately 18,000 open access persons files. The project aimed at employing new techniques and methodologies that come from other fields (i.e. computer science), in order to approach the study of ancient population in an innovative way, to ease the research, and to create an open-access tool, available for the academic community. In the scope of this paper, we use Romans1by1 as an example to explore the perspectives of ingesting the information from a prosopographical relational database into a graph database.

La riqueza epigráfica de Extremadura sigue en aumento. Presentamos aquí un conjunto de inscripciones procedentes de distintas localidades cacereñas. Son sencillos epígrafes, generalmente de carácter funerario y algunos sin texto, que siguen la tónica general de otros muchos epígrafes de la zona.

The municipality of Rabanales de Aliste, located in the northwest of the province of Zamora, is home to a large number of inscriptions, mainly funerary stelae, which have been the focus of study since the beginning of the 20th century by various researchers. Although all of them have subsequently been reused in the wall structures of houses or in the local church, recent archaeological excavations point to their possible link with the site of El Castrico, occupied during the second half of the 1st century AD and the first half of the 2nd century AD. This paper analyses an unpublished funerary stele discovered in 2021 embedded in the interior of the church of El Salvador, specifically in the access to the base of the bell tower from the central nave, which served as an ashlar for the lintel of the doorway. Thanks to the use of innovative techniques such as digital photogrammetry and the application of GIS analysis, it has been possible to read the inscription correctly and to discard some marks caused by successive alterations to the block after its reuse. In this way, we can minimise the risk of misinterpreting non-existent characters on the part. Despite being a simple funerary inscription, its analysis has revealed the first evidence of the anthroponym Caraucus in the Roman Empire, of clear Celtic tradition, as well as a possible grandfather-father-son relationship, thus completing the family ancestry of another character mentioned in the epigraphic corpus of Rabanales: Potitus, son of Alionus and grandson of Caraucus.

Testimonianze della media età del Bronzo sul Campidoglio Gli scavi recentemente condotti nel Giardino Romano del Palazzo dei Conservatori sul Campidoglio (fig. 1) per iniziativa della Sovraintendenza Comunale con la collaborazione della Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma e della cattedra di Paletnologia dell'Università di Roma "La Sapienza" hanno apportato per la prima volta dati certi per definire le più antiche fasi di occupazione continuativa del Colle Capitolino nel corso dell'età del Bronzo. Prima di entrare nello specifico si possono ricordare alcuni rinvenimenti isolati effettuati nell'area centrale di Roma, riferibili a momenti precedenti quello preso in considerazione, come un pugnale a base semplice tipo Massa Marittima e asce in metallo tipo Esquilino e Mirabella Eclano dall'Esquilino, presumibilmente collegati con contesti funerari eneolitici (Pinza 1905, tavv. XV.4, XVI.21-22; Peroni 1971, pp. 179-183; Carancini 1993). Più problematica appare la pertinenza di un vaso situliforme con un'appendice conica sull'ansa a bastoncello, sempre dall'Esquilino, che è stato attribuito agli inizi dell'età del Bronzo (Peroni 1971, p. 218). I rinvenimenti di materiali non in situ effettuati in occasione dei recenti scavi alle pendici settentrionali del Palatino non appaiono riferibili con certezza al periodo che va dal pieno Eneolitico alla fine dell'età del Bronzo (Remotti 2000).

En Griego filosófico nos es presentado el fruto de dos seminarios y de dos cursos que tuvieron lugar en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires entre 2013 y 2016: un método particular para enseñar y aprender el griego clásico, con sus fundamentos, su enfoque proprio, sus instrumentos y ejemplos de aplicación. Tres partes lo componen: En la primera, y más consistente, titulada "Un método filosófico" (p. 15-82), se expone y se ilustra el marco teórico. The aim of this article is to study four unpublished inscriptions, presumably from the Via Latina, preserved in two different sites located just outside Porta Latina: the Curia Generalizia dei Padri Marianisti and the Casa di cura “Mater Misericordiae”. The four termini sepulcrorum can be traced back to funerary enclosures originally located along the Via Latina, between the first and second mile of the road. Each inscription, examinated in situ by the authors, is accompanied by its own epigraphic description, highlighting interesting data and critical points.

The paper provides an overview of pagan funerary inscriptions from the ancient Roman city of Thignica (modern-day Aïn Tounga, Tunisia). Several topics are discussed in relations to the whole corpus (comprising published and unpublished texts, the latter of which were identified during a survey carried out in Thignica in September 2018): quantity, locations of discovery / conservation, materials, monumental typologies, and symbols. With reference only to published material some carmina are discussed, two of which, concerning soldiers, are bilingual and contain quotations from Greek and Latin epic poems. The paper also analyses some characteristics of non-metric texts, such as onomastics, biometrics, formulas, chronology, and social status.
