Roman Epigraphy

This paper takes as its starting point the reflections made by Fábio Duarte Joly and José Ernesto Moura Knust in the article "Ancient Slavery in a Mediterranean Perspective: a Proposal for Global Approach". My comments consist of a first reflective effort dedicated to understanding how provincial Epigraphy can contribute to the study of Ancient Slavery in the contexts indicated by the authors. In this sense, I will conduct my reflections based on two simple questions, namely: how can provincial epigraphic studies contribute to testing and refining the analysis model proposed by Joly and Knust? What paths of analysis can we identify in the data contextualized in Lusitania?

En chacune d'elles, j'ai poursuivi ma tâche, comme un chercheur isolé, en remontant les courants qui entraînent aussi bien les spécialistes que le grand public. La première contredit à l'opinion, généralement accréditée, que César, amoureux fou de Cléopâtre, qui lui aurait donné un fils, Césarion, n'aurait rien su refuser à sa jeune amante, aurait humilié devant elle la majesté des faisceaux romains. Un seul, parmi mes devanciers, mon maître Bouché-Leclercq, a senti ce que cette légende, simple projection, rétrospective et mensongère, sur la haute figure de César, des traits dont Marc-Antoine a barbouillé le visage de Rome, contenait en soi d'invraisemblance ; mais il n'a pas osé s'en libérer entièrement et il s'est borné à l'élaguer de ses éléments les plus 6 PASSION ET POLITIQUE CHEZ LES CÉSARS incroyables. Bien loin que ceuxrci aient transformé l'empire romain en la meilleure des républiques, en remettant, de souverain en souverain, le pouvoir absolu qu'ils détenaient à l'homme le plus digne de l'exercer à son tour, ils ont, à partir de Trajan, jalousement veillé à le maintenir dans leur descendance ; et, même avec Hadrien, ils ont mieux aimé le conférer par des assassinats à leurs bâtards que l'abandonner paisiblement à de légitimes collatéraux. L'analisi dei contesti tardoantichi dello scavo dell'area del nuovo ospedale di Lucca, in località Arancio, permette di concludere l'itinerario nei paesaggi della campagna lucchese fra IV e V secolo d.C. iniziato quasi quaranta anni prima in località Corte Carletti di Orentano. La tipologia degli insediamenti individuati invita ad esprimere qualche ipotesi sulla struttura dei paesaggi, partando dall'evidenza iconografica – soprattutto di sarcofagi – del III-IV secolo d.C.

Une inscription grecque inédite provenant de la région de Suweidā' permet de localiser avec précision le monastère de 'A , mentionné par la Lettre des archimandrites d'Arabie vers 570, sur les pentes du tell Jefneh. Ce monastère y apparaît non seulement sous son nom grec, Α (gén.), mais placé sous l'autorité du même archimandrite que nomme la Lettre , ce qui ne peut réellement surprendre puisque le texte est daté de la décennie 565-574. The monastery is named in the new inscription by its greek name, Α (gén.), and it is run by the same archimandrites whose name appears in the Letter, not a surprise since the new inscription is dated to the decade 565-574.

The site of Apulum I, Colonia Aurelia Apulensis was impacted by public infrastructure works in the modern city of Alba Iulia, carried out during 2023. Here, during an archaeological supervision on Regimentul V Vânători Street, no. 88, in the Roman province of Dacia, the first and only stone relief depicting Priapus-the god of fertility and fecundity, protector of gardens, orchards, vineyards, and maritime tradewas discovered. Positioned at the entrance of a building, the relief had an apotropaic function, guarding against the evil eye, malevolent spirits, envy, and similar threats. The god is depicted in an unusual form, kneeling, in profile, holding his greatly oversized erect penis with his left hand. A similar profile representation in relief is found in a piece from Pompeii, at the bakery of Modestus. Generally, the god is portrayed both in statues and reliefs standing, with an erect phallus, dressed in a tunic or mantle lifted to hold fruits and flowers. The relief can be dated to the period AD 235-260.

newly discovered inscription during the rescue excavations within the fortress of the XIII Gemina legion at Apulum is published here. The marble slab was probably set by the members of a religious collegium (or of a collegium veteranorum?) that contributed everyone with one hundred denarii to build something inside the fortress during the Severan period. Two of the contributors were former soldiers of the legion, while the third was somehow connected with the collegium fabrum of the municipium Septimium Apulense.

This paper presents the latest epigraphic discovery in the camp of XIIIth Legion Gemina, represented by a votive altar dedicated to Iupiter Optimus Maximus, the protective Genius of the centuria, by a non-commissioned officer with the rank of optio named M(arcus) Atti(us) Valens. It was identified in situ, next to the entrance in contubernium, more precisely next to one of the rooms used to deposit the weapons (arma). This room was closely to the apartment of the centurion. Considering the chiselling manner of the letters, which are not carefully executed, and the context of the discovery, which is the last level of Roman habitation, the votive monument is chronologically dated during a period of the military anarchy as more precise data is forthcoming. This is the second monument discovered in Apulum dedicated to a protector Genius of the centuria. This military deity is mentioned in Potaissa by the texts of two votive altars . The article examines the tombstone of the naval centurion Liccaeus, which was discovered in the village of Osor (Apsorus) on the island of Cres. According to the inscription, it appears that a public site was allocated for the monument, indicating the honorand’s significance to the local community. Liccaeus is depicted wearing a tunic and a sagum, but the most unusual feature is the object he holds in his hand. This object has often been interpreted as a rope tied into a knot, similar to those used for mooring ships. Little is known about the appearance of the command
staff, vitis, that was a distinctive symbol of also naval centurions. However, depictions on Ravenna tombstones from the Early Imperial period which feature an object similar to knot suggest that, during this era, the vitis for naval centurions may have been represented differently. Given the absence of any attributes on the tombstone that would directly associate the deceased with his rank, it is possible that Liccaeus is holding a vitis, which, by its appearance, could also refer to his maritime skills.

RESUMEN: En este artículo se presentan y analizan cinco inscripciones romanas procedentes de Belorado (Burgos), algunas de ellas inéditas, que se registran en un manuscrito, de autor desconocido, conservado en la Biblioteca Nacional de España (Ms. 21.696/4).

Se analizan diversos materiales marmóreos procedentes del anfiteatro de Itálica, identificando materiales de origen bético (Almadén de la Plata, Mijas, Alconera) y lusitano (Anticlinal de Estremoz, Aroche, Beja). Se discute asimismo la validez de diversos tipos de analíticas para llevar a cabo su identificación y diferenciación entre materiales pétreos de similar conformación geológica en áreas regionales cercanas béticas y lusitanas.

Este libro, más que una crónica, es un intento por reflejar el pulso de un pueblo que se mantiene firme, que sabe lo que significa la levedad de existir y, a su vez, la profundidad de pertenecer a un lugar que ha sido el mismo durante siglos. Un pueblo que no cambia, pero que cambia a todos los que se atreven a mirarlo de cerca. Y si, al final de este relato, usted llega a entender algo más de Collado de la Vera, lo habrá logrado no porque le haya sido explicado, sino porque lo habrá sentido, en lo más hondo, como algo que ya formaba parte de usted desde el principio.

En el presente trabajo se recopilan y analizan las inscripciones de médicos incluidas en la obra de Ligorio, poniendo el foco en los textos inventados, así como en algunas anotaciones que este humanista hizo acerca de la práctica de la medicina y los médicos de la Antigüedad. Asimismo, se pone en relación esa información con el ambiente médico erudito de la época. El fin último es valorar en qué medida la cultura médica del Renacimiento italiano influyó en Ligorio a la hora de inventar epígrafes de médicos y de transmitir sus ideas acerca de la medicina en la antigua Roma.

Como el posible lector recordará, iniciamos una serie de nuestras rutas anárquicas siguiendo el curso del río Tajo, desde la ciudad de Toledo aguas arriba, hacia las fuentes del Tajo. In this text I have examined four significant inscriptions found in or near Bitola, N. Macedonia. The document focuses on four distinct epigraphic monuments spanning various historical periods, including a Hellenistic dedication to King Philip V, a Roman votive inscription for the soldier Crescens, a medieval dedication by Tsar Ivan Vladislav in Old Church Slavonic, and an Ottoman votive inscription for Kadı Haydar Efendi. Each section details the inscription's location, material, dimensions, condition, translation and scholarly commentary, highlighting the historical, linguistic and cultural debates surrounding its interpretation and dating. Collectively, the study uses these inscriptions (written in Greek, Latin, Old Cyrillic, and Arabic) to trace the multicultural historical evolution of the region from antiquity through the Ottoman period.

The Bucharest conference focuses on the historical and political epistemology of the Roman Republic, examining how ancient sources help us understand processes of constitutional change. It explores phenomena of political and legal transgression, such as the use of armies against Rome, proscriptions, and institutionalized violence. The discussions highlight both legal-political mechanisms and contemporary perceptions, using figures like Cicero to analyse memory and discourse during the Republic’s crisis. The conference also aims to connect philological, historical, and theoretical approaches to rethink modern categories applied to ancient contexts.

Se presenta en este trabajo una pieza de época romana relacionada con el juego infantil encontrada en la excavación de las termas orientales de Torreparedones. Se trata de una muñeca articulada que está fabricada en terracota a la que faltan algunas partes como la cabeza y los brazos. Resulta de gran interés por la rareza de este tipo de piezas, muy escasas en Hispania, aunque se conocen algunos ejemplares de factura notable. También se hallaron otras piezas sueltas, una pierna derecha y un pie izquierdo, así como un miembro indeterminado, que deben pertenecer a otras muñecas similares. La cronología de las piezas debe situarse entre los siglos III-V d.C. período en que se formó el gran vertedero sobre las termas cuando estas se abandonaron a finales del siglo II d.C.

Se presentan diez piezas fálicas de época romana de función apotropaica
depositadas en el Museo Arqueológico de Medina Sidonia (Cádiz). Entre ellas se encuentran ocho amuletos de diferente tipología, un silbato y una breve inscripción grabada sobre una placa de cerámica. Todos los ejemplares proceden de dicho término municipal, antigua Asido Caesarina, conformando uno de los conjuntos más amplios y heterogéneos de toda la provincia gaditana. Por último, a propósito del uso dado a estos objetos, se hace un repaso acerca de la concepción que existió en este período sobre el aojamiento y el porqué del uso de elementos fálicos para hacerle frente.

Resumo: Nas vastas coleções do atual Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia (MAE), da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), há muitos objetos arqueológicos do Oriente (Egito, Mesopotâmia), da Grécia e de sítios romanos. Um dos principais problemas com a maioria desses materiais é a falta de dados contextuais; portanto, em muitos casos, o estudo e a análise do objeto individual são a única ferramenta que se tem para esclarecer sua procedência e datação. Pertence a essa coleção uma estela de mármore com inscrição do tipo Türstein, ou seja, "pedra de porta", de proveniência frígia e datável do século III d.C.

Latin literature is famously dependent on and imitative of Greek liter- ature and, in terms of content and style, Latin epistles are not greatly different from Greek counterparts. But in other respects, the two epistolographical tradi- tions are remarkably divergent. Greeks never developed a taste for collections of letters in verse, and Romans never developed a sustained taste for collections of pseudepigraphic letters. The emergence of epistolary verse in the guise of the Au- gustan poetry book proved decisive for Roman divergence. The poetry book’s ethic of symmetry, variety and nonlinear narration proved influential on Latin epistolographers from Horace to Ambrose. The Hellenistic poetry book had no corresponding influence on the Greek tradition — in which the book unit is in fact largely absent, and the manuscript traditions of individual epistolographers correspondingly more highly variable.

Research on Roman slavery has mainly been focused on questions of market economy since the beginning of the twentieth century. With the growing focus on the treatment of slaves and their experience of slavery, the master-slave relationship has been the object of increased interest, until recent exploration of the influence of freed slaves’ culture on traditional practices. This thesis tries to assess the construction of parallel value systems among slaves and freedmen, which not only contrasted worldviews in free society but often reshaped them. Instrumentalization of the emotional concepts of honour and dishonour in the context of the family and in funerary commemoration are central to such assessment.

The Roman reliefs from Ptuj include one that shows a nude male figure previously interpreted as Lysippian Kairos. It is an attractive interpretation, but one that calls for a careful analysis of all the elements of the relief to either support or refute it. The analysis has revealed the relief to be a fragment of the lower part of a marble sepulchral stela divided into three panels covering four modules. Only half of the central panel survives and depicts a male nude, whom some authors identified as Kairos; others saw him as a satyr paired with a (now missing) maenad. A new formal analysis of the figure, however, has shown significant differences when compared with Lysippian Kairos, but not with regard to a satyr depicted according to Neo-Attic models, such as is portrayed on a sarcophagus from Ioannina and on a drawing of a now lost relief from Ptuj. The new and precise 3D photographs of the Ptuj relief have furthermore revealed traces of a cloak billowing behind the male figure, a detail that identifies it as one of the mythological deities/heroes pursuing a female figure. The motif and its composition indicate an origin in the Neo-Attic tradition.

Embodiment steht für die Erkenntnis, dass sowohl Wahrnehmung und Emotionen als auch abstraktes Denken, Gedächtnis und Intentionalität auf essenziell physischen Prozessen basieren, zu denen Gehirn, Körper und Umwelt wechselseitig beitragen. Von diesen Überlegungen profitieren die Disziplinen in unterschiedlicher Weise. In der Philosophie und in den Kognitionswissenschaften hat sich das Verständnis des Körpers gewandelt. So wird davon ausgegangen, dass der Körper die Art und Weise prägt, wie wir die Welt erfahren und wie wir uns in ihr orientieren. Körperliche Merkmale wie Hautfarbe, Geschlecht und Größe beeinflussen die Wahrnehmung anderer Menschen und den Umgang mit ihnen. Umso mehr gilt es, warnt Thomas Fuchs, auf die gesellschaftlichen Folgen zu achten, wenn mit der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung und medialen Kommunikation ein Verlust von verkörperter Erfahrung verbunden ist. In den sozialen Neurowissenschaften bietet eine Einbeziehung von Konzepten des Embodiments neue Impulse für psychotherapeutische Interventionen. Christoph Korn ordnet Brettspiele oder analoge Computerspiele dem Werkzeugkasten der Therapie zu, um funktionale soziale Interaktionen zu fördern. Auch die Gesprächslinguistik profitiert von der Erweiterung ihres kognitiven 4E-Modells durch ein Embodiment-Paradigma. Die daraus resultierende Verfeinerung ihrer Analysemöglichkeiten veranschaulicht Stefan Pfänder. Wenn Kunstwerke und Performances Roboter und eine Verkörperung von KI integrieren, entsteht aus der Sicht von Oliver Deussen nicht nur ein innovatives interdisziplinäres Forschungsfeld, es lässt sich auch eine breitere Öffentlichkeit einbeziehen. Neue Perspektiven entwickeln sich durch die Anwendung von Embodiment-Konzepten ebenso in den Altertumswissenschaften. Anna A. Novokhatko nennt Beispiele aus der lateinischen Semantik, der antiken Historiographie, der Archäologie und dem antiken Theater. Sabine Arendt und Max Graff beschreiben die Frühe Neuzeit als eine Epoche, in der die Körperlichkeit des Individuums neu entdeckt wurde. Sie heben aus ihrer Lektüre von Briefquellen zwei Aspekte hervor: körperliche Konstitution als zentrales Kriterium für die Wahl der Ehepartnerin im Hochadel und einen gesunden Körper als notwendige Grundlage für das Wirken im Dienste Gottes und der Kirche. Körper und Geist bildeten eine untrennbare Einheit. Diese Botschaft teilen auch die drei Beiträge aus den Asienwissenschaften. Ihre Beispiele verdeutlichen, wie tief der Aspekt der Verkörperung in den traditionellen Ritualen der asiatischen Religionskulturen verankert ist. Am Beispiel der Toten-und Altersrituale in Nepal zeigt Axel Michaels, wie die Rituale nicht nur den Körper formen, sondern umgekehrt der individuelle Körper auch die Rituale beeinflusst. Dies gilt in ähnlicher Weise für die südindischen Tempeltraditionen, bei denen die körperliche Präsenz und die Ausdrucksfähigkeit eines hinduistischen Priesters über das Maß seiner rituellen Kompetenz entscheiden. Ute Hüsken sieht in dem Textwissen der Priester vor allem ein verkörpertes rituelles Wissen. Text und Körper sind untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Selbst der im Buddhismus zentrale Begriff der Befreiung ist nicht nur eine spirituelle, sondern auch eine zutiefst körperliche Angelegenheit, wie Michael Radich hervorhebt. Betrachtet man die Beiträge in ihrer Gesamtheit, so zeigt sich, wie unterschiedlich das Embodiment-Konzept verwendet werden kann. Es ermöglicht eine Erweiterung des Methodenrepertoires, vertieft Erkenntnisse, eröffnet neue Analyseebenen oder bindet traditionelle Phänomene aus anderen Kulturräumen in unsere aktuellen Diskurse ein.

Occupying over a thousand acres of the Roman Campagna, the tuff quarries of the Lower Aniene Valley represent one of the largest extant sources of evidence for the extraction of building stone in antiquity. Yet these enormous quarries, sites which are so obvious to anyone who passes by on the autostrada, are little studied when compared to the quarries of decorative stone from elsewhere in the Mediterranean. This failure deprives us of the opportunity to understand better not only a single large quarry, but a string of quarries spread out over an industrial landscape – a rare chance to study the inter-operation between multiple discrete and connected extractive zones. Through a multi-scalar analysis of the quarry landscape, this paper will explore this large zone and its associated archaeological evidence and will seek to question established beliefs with regard to the effectiveness of water and road transportation.

Il presente studio si propone di indagare in profondità il ruolo svolto dai decurioni, ossia i membri del consiglio municipale (ordo decurionum), nella vita politica, religiosa e sociale della città di Terracina in età romana. Tale indagine si fonda esclusivamente sulle testimonianze epigrafiche ufficialmente registrate nel database EDR (Epigraphic Database Roma) e verificate all'interno del corpus relativo al territorio terracinese. Le epigrafi selezionate-tredici in totale, databili tra la tarda età repubblicana e il pieno periodo imperiale-offrono un panorama ricco e sfaccettato delle funzioni dell'ordine decurionale. Attraverso esse emergono con chiarezza i diversi ambiti di competenza dell'ordine decurionale: la gestione dei lavori pubblici e delle risorse finanziarie della comunità, come attestano iscrizioni che riportano formule tecniche quali senatus consulto o de senatus sententia; la deliberazione di decreti a favore di privati cittadini o di benefattori locali, espressa dalla formula censuerunt; la concessione di spazi pubblici e sacri per dediche votive, documentata da epigrafi in cui ricorre la clausola locus datus decreto decurionum; la nomina di patroni municipali, atto politico di altissimo significato, attestato più volte nel caso terracinese; e nonché la capacità di inserire la comunità locale in reti più ampie di potere e rappresentanza, fino a includere membri della famiglia imperiale come Gaio e Lucio Cesare. Attraverso l'analisi di tali documenti, Terracina si rivela come un laboratorio privilegiato per lo studio delle dinamiche del potere municipale romano: una città situata in una posizione strategica lungo la Via Appia, al confine tra Lazio e Campania, dotata di porto, santuario e spazi pubblici monumentali, che seppe integrare il proprio ordine decurionale nelle pratiche quotidiane della politica imperiale. In questo senso, il contributo dei decurioni non fu soltanto amministrativo, ma ebbe anche una forte dimensione simbolica e performativa: i loro decreti, scolpiti nella pietra, erano strumenti di costruzione del consenso civico, di memoria condivisa e di autorappresentazione delle élite locali. Lo studio non si limita a una mera raccolta documentaria, ma adotta un approccio interdisciplinare, intrecciando tra filologia filologia epigrafica, archeologia topografica e storia istituzionale. Le epigrafi vengono così analizzate nel loro contenuto linguistico e giuridico, ma anche collocate nello spazio urbano (foro, santuari, aree portuali) e interpretate alla luce delle trasformazioni politiche e sociali che interessarono il Lazio meridionale tra I secolo a.C. e III secolo d.C. Un'attenzione particolare è dedicata al linguaggio tecnico delle iscrizioni (censuerunt, senatus consulto, decreto decurionum), che permette di cogliere la continuità del diritto municipale romano e di evidenziare le specificità locali di Terracina rispetto ad altre città del Latium vetus. Infine, il presente lavoro intende dialogare non solo con gli specialisti di epigrafia e di storia romana, ma anche con un pubblico più ampio, fornendo traduzioni, spiegazioni terminologiche e un glossario finale che renda accessibili concetti tecnici come bisellium, patronus municipii, ordo decurionum o locus datus. L'obiettivo è mostrare come la voce delle pietre di Terracina non sia soltanto un frammento di erudizione antiquaria, ma una testimonianza viva delle forme di partecipazione politica e delle strategie di autorappresentazione che hanno caratterizzato la vita municipale romana per secoli. In questo senso, Terracina rappresenta un caso di studio di valore paradigmatico: le sue epigrafi ci permettono di osservare in azione il meccanismo di costruzione del consenso civico che passava attraverso i decreti del consiglio decurionale, i quali sancivano onori, opere e concessioni, inscrivendo le decisioni politiche nella memoria materiale della città.

This study aims to conduct an in-depth investigation into the role played by the decurions-the members of the municipal council (ordo decurionum)-in the political, religious, and social life of the city of Terracina during the Roman era. This inquiry is founded exclusively on the epigraphic evidence officially recorded in the EDR (Epigraphic Database Roma) and verified within the corpus pertaining to the Terracina region. The selected inscriptions-thirteen in total, datable between the late Republican period and the high Imperial era-offer a rich and multifaceted panorama of the functions of the decurional order.

This paper examines a newly discovered votive altar dedicated to the goddess Terra Mater, from Ratarska Ulica (Ratarska Street) in Sremska Mitrovica (ancient Sirmium). This is the first recorded evidence of this deity in Sirmium. The analysed monument, an accidental find, was donated to the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade. This paper will describe the monument and interpret its inscription. It will also attempt to understand the monument within its micro- and macro-regional contexts, examining its similarities and differences compared to monuments mentioning the same deity in Pannonia and other neighbouring provinces (Dacian provinces, Dalmatia, and Moesia Superior).

Ovaj članak se usredsređuje na novopronađeni votivni oltar iz Ratarske ulice u Sremskoj Mitrovici (antički Sirmium) posvećen boginji Teri Mater (Terra Mater). Ovo je prvi zabeleženi primer posvete toj boginji u Sirmijumu. Krečnjački spomenik koji pominje ovu boginju je slučajan nalaz i darovan je Narodnom muzeju Srbije u Beogradu. Terra Mater, boginja koja se dovodi u vezu sa podzemljem, je zbog svojih osobina povezivana sa rudarstvom i poljoprivredom. Ciljevi ovoga rada jesu da se opiše spomenik, interpretira njegov natpis, da se taj spomenik razume u svojim mikroregionalnim i makroregionalnim kontekstima i da se njegova sadržnina uporedi sa spomenicima na kojima su prisutne posvete ovoj boginji u panonskim i drugim susednim provincijama (dačke provincije, Dalmacija [Dalmatia] i Gornja Mezija [Moesia Superior]).

A partir de un exhaustivo análisis de las evidencias epigráficas e iconográficas de] culto a Némesis en la Hispania romana, el autor analiza y contrasta las últimas hipótesis suscitadas en torno a esta cuestión. Aunque la baja extracción social de los dedicantes sustenta en la mayor parte de los casos la visión tradicional, parece posible pensar que, en realidad, este culto alcanzó una mayor repercusión en ámbitos sociales más amplios.

This article analyzes epigraphical evidence from the city of Rome (CIL VI) as well as medical and legal texts, Roman comedy, and Latin literature to better understand how working freedwomen negotiated the potential for motherhood. It contends that freedwomen sometimes elevated other aspects of their lives above the maternal. More precisely, it argues that occupation shaped freedwomen’s decisions about motherhood, including whether to become a mother. The results suggest that the ideology of the elite, which emphasized marriage and motherhood, may not have been reflected in the priorities of women from other social strata.
