Os processos criativos das séries fotográficas de Cindy Sherman, apresentam uma confluência de elementos de diferentes tipos de linguagens, obtida através da performatividade de personagens que esvanecem a figuratividade do seu “eu” autorretratado. As séries fotográficas The Bus Riders (1976), Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) e Rear Screen Projections (1980-1981) são aqui tomadas como objetos de análise, para refletir sobre as similaridades conceituais existentes entre a sua obra e determinados aspectos da arte contemporânea, discutidos por alguns autores e autoras. This paper makes a comparative analysis of two photographic works by American photographers Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe, respectively photograph #255 of the Sex Pictures series, and the Self-portrait with whip. Our interest in these works is their critical potential regarding issues around the relationship between photography, contemporary aesthetics, queer theory and identity politics today. After a providing a description of the historical background, a description of the visual elements is made based on visual semiotics, according to Leon's (2017) account, which subsidizes interpretation in a more hermeneutical sense. Then connections are established departing from intertextuality possibilities, from the point of view of the aesthetic experience in Antonin Artaud, Arthur Dant, and the philosophy of emotions.

Questo studio propone un’analisi delle biografie di artisti contemporanei (film e documentari) in ambito cinematografico, prendendo in esame una rassegna specializzata nel genere biopic, a partire dal titolo programmatico e mai cambiato: il Biografilm Festival.
Inaugurata nel giugno 2005, la rassegna bolognese è giunta nel 2024 alla ventesima edizione. Fin dagli esordi ha presentato programmi dedicati alla celebrazione di “vite” distintesi per eccezionalità in ogni ambito socioculturale: spettacolo, musica, scienze, sport, difesa dei diritti umani. Riservando un’attenzione via via crescente alle relazioni tra arti figurative e cinema, con nuove sezioni create a questo scopo.
Un’evoluzione inevitabile, a causa dell’interesse di un pubblico sempre più "emancipato” sull’argomento; cui fa da controcanto un’offerta incrementata di film biografici o autobiografici su vita e opere di artisti nostri coevi.
La ricerca si conclude tentando una disamina delle reciproche interazioni tra cinematografia e visual art. Formulando alcune ipotesi sulla “traducibilità” del linguaggio di quest’ultima nei vari media, in particolare quello cinematografico.

Bu çalışmada Baudrillard'ın Simülakrlar ve Simülasyon kavramları üzerinden televizyon haberciliğindeki gerçeklik sorunu ele alınacaktır. Televizyonun kitleselliği bugün hala daha yerini korumaktadır. Bu doğrultuda Baudrillard'ın Simülasyon ve Simülakrlar kavramları oldukça büyük önem taşımaktadır. Baudrillard düşünce dünyasında büyük önem taşır. Bu önemi bugün var olan gerçeklik sorununu bize sunulmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Enformasyon çağında gerçeğin kendisine ihtiyaç duyduğumuz bir zamanda yaşamaktayız. Bu ihtiyaç bize her zamankinden çok daha fazla algılamamız gereken bir evrende var olmamızın sonucu olmaktadır. Çok fazla haberin üretimin olduğu ancak bir anlamdan yoksun yaşamamızın yegane sebebi simülasyon evreninde var olmamız dan kaynaklanır. Haberin gerçekliği bilginin gerçekliği bu çağın önemli bir sorunudur. Bizi kendimizden uzaklaştıran anlatılar yerine kendi gerçeğinle yüzleşmemiz oldukça büyük önem taşır. Bu çalışma bu önemin anlam arayışının bir panzehirini bulma amacı taşır. İnsanlık gerçeği her zaman merak etmiştir. Çünkü ilk önce anlamlandırmak esas olmuştur. Bu yüzden gerçek nedir sorusu her zaman sorulmuş ve üzerine milyonlarca makale kitap yazılmıştır.

Fotoğraf, icadından buyana sanata farklı yollarla ve biçimlerle dahil olmayı bilmiştir. Önceleri yardımcı bir malzeme olarak kullanılan fotoğraf, postmodernizmde tek başına sanat dünyasında boy göstermekte, sanatın vazgeçilmezleri arasında yerini sağlamlaştırmaktadır. Postmodern dönemde fotoğrafın, bir olayın şahitliği işlevi artık geçersizdir. Bu dönemde fotoğrafik üretimin orijinalliğinin yıkılması sonucunda, sanatın yalnızca yinelemeye dayalı bir etkinlik olabileceği görüşü egemendir. Fotoğraf ürünleri özellikle gerçekliğin yeniden üretilmesiyle varlığını göstermektedir. Postmodernistler fotoğrafı söylemlerini aktarmanın en önemli aracı olarak kullanmaktadırlar. Fotoğrafın yepyeni bir disiplin ve birçok alana açık oluşu, kolay ulaşılabilirliği, hızlı ve tüketime yönelik olması, yeniden üretilebilirlik özelliği, sanatçıların fotoğrafı tercih etmelerine sebep olmuştur. Para tentar respondê-la, investiga, através da arte, sobre a condição da tela de cristal dos smartphones enquanto espaço de autorrepresentação na contemporaneidade, em detrimento do que teria sido o espelho para o mundo moderno. Para tal objetivo, parte do estudo sobre as mulheres e a mirada de si, e, por fim, analisa a produção da artista Cindy Sherman (Glen Ridge/EUA, 1954) e suas relações com a rede social Instagram.

In an increasingly visual world, where media, advertisements, and digital content constantly compete for attention, the ability to think critically about what we see is essential. Visual arts, often seen as a creative or aesthetic pursuit, play a crucial role in developing cognitive skills. Whether analyzing a painting, creating an artwork, or interpreting visual symbols, engaging with art enhances observation, reasoning, and problem-solving. This article explores how visual arts cultivate critical thinking by serving as a cognitive exercise, encouraging open-mindedness through ambiguity, fostering problem-solving skills, and offering effective educational methodologies.

Some of the works created by Tina Modotti, an Italian artist who has an important place in the history of photography and photography, throughout her career (productions between 1924-1929) have been examined within the scope of this research. Modotti's life story and important works have been summarized; her photographs have been analyzed within the framework of Roland Barthes' "punctum" and "studium" concepts, which are semiological concepts. This analysis progresses through the problematic of how a work of art determines its artist, meaning, producer and viewer. The analysis process is based on concepts such as "studium" and "punctum", "meaning" and "significance", "subjectified object" and "objectified subject", which Terry Barrett, Jean-Paul Sartre and Roland Barthes collectively address. These concepts support the search for an alternative method for art criticism. The research emphasizes that these concepts (the distinction between meaning and meaning, the concepts of subjectified object and objectified subject) can be used as tools of interpretation and examination in the approach to a work of art. In addition, connections have been established with the concept of "semantics", which can be considered as a sum of all these concepts, and a new method proposal has been presented in this context. As a result, the research aims to create awareness on how conceptual tools can be used effectively in art criticism and interpretation processes. It seeks to offer a new methodology for art criticism using semantic tools.

Bu makale, asırlardır insanlığın kullandığı bir nesne olarak ayakkabıyı, bir nesne olmanın dışında, çeşitli bağlam ve yan anlamlarda sanat eserlerine yansımasını araştırmaktadır. Aristotales'ten günümüze birçok düşünürün tartıştığı nesne ve özne ilişkisi, bu makalede öncelikli olarak Rene Decartes ve Karl Marks'ın açıklamalarıyla ele alınmaktadır. Bununla birlikte sanatsal pratiklere değinen bu makalede, Van Gogh'un "Ayakkabılar"ı Martin Heidegger'in açıklamalarıyla ele alınırken, 1960 sonrası sanat pratiklerinin çeşitliliği de göz önünde bulundurularak, Andy Warhol'un "Shoes Diamond Dust", Nayland Blake'in "Lap Dog", Lisa Milroy'un "Shoes", Mona Hatoum'un "Still Performance" ve Sigalit Landau'un "Salted Lake" eserleri, kimlik, göç, cinsiyet kuramları bağlamında ele alınmıştır. Ayakkabı imgesine Türkiye perspektifinden bakan Şakir Gökçebağ'ın "Misafirler II" adlı eseri göç, kimlik ve mülteci kavramlarını ele almaktadır. Vahit Tuna'nın kadına yönelik şiddet ve kadın cinayetlerini ele aldığı "İsimsiz" adlı eseri de bu makalede yer almaktadır.

Image of the self is in the realm of the imaginary-a chance to become the dream. The body can be perfect, the face a vision of loveliness or heroism, the garments and settings revelatory of what is valued-wealth, intellect, serenity, the natural world. (Brodsky and Olin 2013 , 6) In his essay "On Counternarrative," Rick Moody (2013) asks where the Lacanian Real exists as a means of introducing three outsider photographers: Eugene Von Bruenchenhein, Morton Bartlett, and Lee Godie. Lacan's Real , Moody writes, is outside the symbolic order, popular culture, and other signs and signifiers of social assimilation: "It is that which resists symbolization absolutely" (Lacan, as cited in Moody 2013, 15). If the (Lacanian) Real does exist somewhere outside the constructed symbolism of language and contemporary visual culture, that doesn't stop us, says Moody, from trying to get therein other words, imagining what it would be like to live outside signs and symbols. Moody suggests that we look toward outsider artists Von Bruenchenhein, Bartlett, and Godie as fellow humans who have access to these realms. Similarly, in The Disarticulate: Language, Disability, and the Narratives of Modernity , James Berger (2014) uses the neologism "dys-/disarticulate" to describe "the figure of cognitive or linguistic impairment: the figure outside the linguistic loop" (1). This figure is Berger's archetype of "the traumatized" who is without fissure in a private presymbolic world because of a breakdown of identity within the social order. Berger's dys-/ disarticulate emerges as a counternarrative, embodying the failure of articulation, a "modern radical other, concerned specifically as other to symbolization" (55). They are the "post-modern wild children" (108) who reflect a contemporary condition in response to a traumatized social order. The incoherency, resistance, instability, and contradiction in language belies its totalizing system and calls for, says Berger, greater attempts at recognizing others outside the system as capable of representing themselves rather than as classified, fixed, and labeled. To be part of the social-symbolic system is the privilege of representing oneself and thus the significance of "counternarratives" such as Godie's. Counternarrative is the defense from totalizing language, models, and labels because of its open and dynamic, permeable and porous, unpredictable and ambiguous use of language or idiosyncratic forms of visual symbols from which new social meanings can emerge (Berger 2014). According to Berger, therefore, visual works made by outsider artists such as Godie take on unusually personal, symbolic relevance. In this chapter, I consider how Godie escaped both the outsider and disabled artist labels. Godie was homeless by choice, which invites normals to imagine various diagnoses for her. And although not an artist working in the mainstream, she defies the standards that apply to so-called outsider artists.

In the early years of photography, portrait photography has produced quite a lot of different art and style, from the self-portrait of Robert Cornelius (1839) to the 'Self-portrait as a drowned man' (1840) photograph by Hippolyte Bayard, from the pictorial portraits of Julia Margaret Cameron to the present day handled by the artist in different ways. Portrait approaches that go back and forth between reality and fiction have turned into a completely different structure with the Postmodern period. With the postmodern period, a stance was determined in which different understandings were exhibited against modernism by moving away from the existing modernist norms. One of the distinctive understandings of art observed in the postmodern period is Appropriation. This approach manifests itself as an understanding of re-presenting an image by owning it. Appropriation portrait approach, on the other hand, contains neither Cameron's aesthetic and pictorial understanding nor the concern of capturing the character; Nadar who is trying to capture in the portrait. Appropriation portraits are produced with an understanding that is quite different in the history of photography and far from traditional portrait rules. Appropriation portraits have created images by centered on "reproduction", as the Postmodern destroys originality and is fed by different styles and contradictions. Richard Prince's reproduction of the 'Cowboys' in Marlboro advertisements, Sherrie Levine's rephotographing of modernist photography classics such as Walker Evans, Edward Weston, Alexander Rodtchenko without any changes, Cindy Sherman's frames from films in the Untitled Film Still series as models and even Aneta Grzeszykowska's reproduction of the Untitled Film Still series reproduced by Cindy Sherman are among the significant examples. In this study, 'Appropriation' portraits were examined by considering the portrait approaches created in the context of the new understanding.

Kurgu ve sahnelemenin sanatsal anlamda kullanımı oldukça geçmişe dayanmaktadır. Fotoğraf bağlamında kurguya bakıldığında ise fotoğrafın icadıyla birlikte ilk örneklerinin ortaya çıktığını ve sahnelemenin dönem içerisinde sıklıkla kullanıldığı görülmektedir. Doğrudan fotoğraf anlayışı ile birlikte sahnelemeye ve kurguya bir karşı duruş söz konusu olmuş olsa da özellikle postmodern dönemle birlikte oldukça fazla başvurulan bir anlayış haline gelmiştir. Günümüzde sinematografi bağlamında da önemli isimler tarafından birer sanatsal anlayış haline dönüştürülen sahneleme ve kurgu anlayışı tasarlama temelinde oldukça farklı biçim ve yöntemler kullanılmaktadır. Bu nedenle çalışmada öncelikle tarihsel kurgu ve sahnelenen fotoğraf örnekleri üzerinden bir inceleme yapılmış ve doğrultudaki örnekler incelenmiş ve günümüze kadar tarihsel süreç değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın temelini oluşturan ve aynı zamanda Jeff Wall’un da benimsediği tablo fotoğraf kavramı, gerçeklik ve fotoğraf üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca çalışmada özellikle Wall’un ortaya attığı tablo fotoğraf kapsamında, aslında anlık bir enstantane görüntüsüne oldukça uzak olmasına rağmen yine de “belgesele yakın” olarak isimlendirilen fotoğraf yaklaşımı Wall ve örnek çalışmalar ekseninde ele alınıp incelemesi yapılmıştır.

İmgeler, insanlık tarihinde önemli bir yere sahip. İlk
mağara resimlerinden modern dijital görsellere kadar
imgeler, kültürlerin, dinlerin, bilimin ve günlük yaşamın
ayrılmaz bir parçası olmuştur. İnsanlar, yazılı dilin ortaya
çıkmasından çok önce bile düşüncelerini, duygularını
ve deneyimlerini görseller yoluyla ifade etmiştir. Bu
görseller, sadece bir iletişim aracı değil, aynı zamanda
bilgiyi koruma ve aktarma yöntemidir. İmgeler, bir
toplumun tarihini, inançlarını, değerlerini ve sosyal
yapısını anlamak için önemli ipuçları sunar. İmgeler,
tarihsel ve kültürel bağlamlarda belirli ideolojileri ve
toplumsal değerleri de yansıtır. İmge, görsel veya zihinsel
bir tasvir olarak sanatın özüdür. Resim, heykel, sinema,
fotoğraf gibi görsel sanat formlarında ve dahi edebiyat
ile şiirde imgeler, sanatçının düşüncelerini, duygularını
ve dünya görüşünü somutlaştırır. İmgeler olmadan bu
somutlaştırma gerçekleşemez. Sanatın imgeler aracılığıyla
var olduğunu ve bu imgelerin sanatın anlamını, duygusal etkisini ve estetik değerini oluşturduğunu düşünerek, birer
izleyici olarak sanat eserlerinde bu imgeleri arayıp anlam
yaratmada nasıl kullanıldıklarını tespit etmek sanattan
aldığımız zevki daha da artıracaktır.

A pose, essa composição fictícia do corpo e do sujeito diante de uma objetiva, passou por diversas transformações culturais desde a invenção da fotografia. Este artigo faz uma breve retrospetiva histórica da pose e relaciona as principais alterações tecnológicas que determinaram transformações culturais nas figurações de corpo, nos quase 180 anos de história da fotografia. Desde a necessidade imperativa da pose, frente aos poucos recursos tecnológicos nos primórdios, sua ascensão por meio de uma lente de quatro objetivas do cartes-de-visite, a demarcação de uma narrativa na fotografia social, o surgimento dos novos catálogos de pose com a chegada do equipamento digital, até o surgimento da selfie. Esta, a mais nova e imperiosa figuração de corpo, nada mais é do que a democratização do autorretrato, onde quem posa é também o operador do equipamento e procura controlar a sua própria pose em todos os níveis complexos de significados. Sempre relacionada com o poder e a imagem corporal social do retratado, a pose, neste contexto, é forma de comunicação e de significação que tem inscritas as marcas do tempo.

Práticas culturais que tenham por finalidade a construção do lugar de sujeito e do lugar de onde esse sujeito se assume enquanto tal. Falar de sujeito é, desde logo, nomear uma instância discursiva, aquele de quem se fala. Mas, focalizada na 1a pessoa, ela torna-se a instância a partir da qual se fala. Daí que o sujeito enquanto eu deva ser perspectivado nas diferentes formações discursivas nas quais se inscreve. A questão da subjectividade aqui colocada não visa justificar a existência de um sujeito pleno, um sujeito da vontade mas, antes, entender o quanto de aleatoriedade e de contingência perpassa no/pelo sujeito ao longo da sua existência.publishersversionpublishe

No matter how often the notion of authenticity is kicked around by critics and theorists as a myth, delusion, or even (in scientific circles) as user illusion of the machine, there is an undeniable ‘affect’ in looking at the work of a genuinely engaged artist painting the figure which strikes back… and lays claim to something fundamentally human. This quality is complex, changeable and ambiguous, as humans are prone to be, but is beautifully communicated in the strangely Lynchian figurative work of Roxana Halls.

In producing radical forms of art, “schizoanalysis” disobeys rules, breaks with convention, and courts unreason. We see this not only in James Joyce’s “splintering” of language, but also in the art of Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer, and others, where images of bodies are torn apart and reassembled into bizarre mythopoetic mélanges of heads and limbs, fusing the genitalia of both sexes. These assemblages suggest machine-like orgies of polysexual and androgynous bodies. In this chapter, I argue that this Surrealist technique of disassembling and reassembling is driven by desire and the imagination, and complements aspects of queer theory aimed at deconstructing traditional notions of desire.

In this chapter, I use queer theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s ideas about affect to consider the recent work of Cindy Sherman. Sherman’s work uncannily mirrors the shift in methodology from an anti‐aesthetic focus on meaning and representation to a more expansive approach that elicits feeling. Her work thus provides an ideal site to examine the difference to feminist analysis that affect makes.

Sanat tarihi alanında önde gelen bir figür olan Linda Nochlin, devrim niteliğindeki çalışmaları ve eleştirel bakış açısıyla sanat tarihi disiplinine unutulmaz izler bırakmıştır. Nochlin’in sanat tarihine olan etkisi geleneksel sanat tarihi anlatılarının sınırlarını aşmış, yerleşmiş normlara meydan okumuş ve sanatın algılanması ve incelenmesi açısından paradigmatik değişimlere neden olmuştur. Yazdığım bu makale ile Nochlin’in sanat tarihine olan çok yönlü etkisini araştırdım ve onun ‘Neden Hiç Büyük Kadın Sanatçı Yok?’' başlıklı ufuk açıcı eserini odağına alarak bu makalenin sanat tarihi alanı üzerindeki geniş etkilerini inceledim.

Pretende-se, ainda, evidenciar os tipos de convenções próprias dos suportes das mídias utilizados para suas imagens e o modus operandi que as mantêm. Grosso modo, entende-se por imagens subsidiadas pela mídia de massa aquelas que são expostas visando ao acesso em grande escala e de forma imediatista.

Over a few months now, I have been meeting with and talking to the artist Howard Sherman. I visited his studio and had long conversations with him about his work. The results of our discussions can be read in his latest catalog accompanying his current show, Exploited Nudes Meant for Commodification at Foltz Fine Arts in Houston, TX. Along with my catalog piece, Sherman and I went live on Instagram, where we walked through the artist's show and talked about his work. I have followed Sherman's work for some time and feel he deserves attention.

Feminist edebiyat kuramı feminist felsefenin edebiyata tatbiki ile karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu kapsamda feminist felsefenin kavramsal karşılığı, tarihsel gelişimi ve ele aldığı konular hususunda bir düşünce altyapısı geliştirilmeden feminist edebiyat kuramının anlaşılması ve eserlere tatbik edilmesi pek mümkün olmayacaktır.

Çalışma kapsamında feminizmin etimolojik serüveninden bir felsefi görüş olarak hayat sahnesindeki yerini almasına ve Türkiye’de ve dünyadaki tarihsel gelişimine yer verilecektir. Feminizmin kültürel inşasının detaylandırılmasının ardından çalışma ile edebiyat kuramı olarak feminizm ele alınacaktır.


Feminist literary theory emerges from the application of feminist philosophy to literature. In this context, it is nearly impossible to understand and apply feminist literary theory to works without first developing a conceptual framework regarding the conceptual counterpart, historical development, and topics addressed by feminist philosophy.

This study will cover the etymological journey of feminism, its establishment as a philosophical view in the theater of life, and its historical development in Turkey and around the world. After detailing the cultural construction of feminism, the study will address feminism as a literary theory.

This essay looks at the Female and the Male gaze in photography and film from the 1970s and 1980s. It uses the photographer Cindy Sherman to show this concepts in photography and the movies of "9 to 5", "Born in Flames"  and "Girlfriends" to show the themes in film.

O retrato fotográfico, como um gênero aliado às tradições da representação das fisionomias, atua no campo do sensível, da fotogenia. Diz respeito à presença expressiva relacionada não com uma referência meramente informativa dessa expressividade (apesar de no caso fotográfico essa referência ser eminentemente figurativa), mas com uma atitude que emana do olhar daquele que fotografa e que se reflete na expressão do sujeito fotografado.

RESUMO A proposta deste artigo é examinar a produção quadrinística da cartunista Chiquinha, pontuando de que maneira pautas importantes dos movimentos feministas estão presentes no seu trabalho. A partir da análise dos autorretratos produzidos pela cartunista e do uso do estilo grotesco em seus desenhos, analisaremos como a cartunista produz uma crítica ao controle político sobre o corpo feminino, as formas essencializadas de compreensão dos homens e mulheres e aos padrões normativos impostos às mulheres, temas importantes para a crítica feminista. Com essa abordagem desejamos colocar em destaque o humor produzido por mulheres, para mulheres e com um direcionamento feminista, ainda carentes de um espaço significativo no campo da História Cultural do Humor.

Despite the qualitative differences between nature and art as dialectical processes that have emerged, they have aprofound unity in themselves. The pluralistic nature of contemporary art and developing technology strengthening the link between the art and mass culture have differentiated artists’ methods of creating and communicating. The artists today have chosen the nature as a metaphor to explain the concepts such as identity, alienation, life, death, ecology, birth, extinction, multiculturalism rather than viewing it as a part of an esthetic research. The metaphors created by naturel way in contemporary art practices changed end intensified the expression while presenting new means of explanation outside traditional artistic understanding.

Nessa pesquisa investigo a ideia do apagamento dos caracteres individuais do autor, elucidada por Michel Foucault em O que é um autor?, à luz de suas possíveis especificidades quando se trata de uma autora mulher. Partindo da crise das narrativas na história e crítica de arte que se fortalece nos anos 1990, chego nos conceitos-base de minha análise, a ideia de autoficção de Diana Klinger– que contempla o retorno do autor pós morte do autor e pós critica filosófica do sujeito – e a de performatividade de Judith Butler– que delimita o gênero não como algo essencial mas sim como uma imitação persistente que passa-se como real. Como estudos de caso, exploro duas obras publicadas entre o final do século XX e o início do século XXI, momento em que identifico um aumento do compartilhamento da vida privada na esfera pública: I Love Dick (1997/2006), da norte-americana Chris Kraus, e Marcelo do Campo (1969-1975) (2006) da paulistana Dora Longo Bahia. Por fim, analiso como cada autora à sua maneira, estabelece uma nova relação com a própria biografia e a partir dela cria uma obra de ficção.

Art as a Wakeful Dream. Criticism of Arthur C. Danto's Revisited Definition of Art Arthur C. Danto is considered one of the most influential analytical philosophers of art of 20th century. He introduced the notion "artworld" into the art-historical and philosophical vocabulary and he was one of the first analytical philosophers who payed attention to art of Modernism. Danto was interested in a question of art definition and offered a solution based on the principle of indiscernibles. However this solution seemed not to be a plausible one in the course of time and Danto himself decided to reconsider his definition. In the first part of this article, I concern with a characterization of art as "embodied meanings", i.e. with Danto's first version of definition held until his last book What Art Is was published in 2013. In the second part, I focus on criticism of Danto's cognitivism in the article "Whatever happened to 'embodiment'? The eclipse of materiality in Danto's ontology of art" by Diarmuid Costello. Costello argues that Danto's notion of interpretation is not sufficient for our treating artworks as artworks and that it was Danto's insufficient attention to interaction of a meaning of an artwork and its embodiment which is responsible for this mistake. In the last section of this paper, I shall compare Costello's strictures on Danto's art definition with Danto's revisited version introduced in What Art Is. My aim is to answer the question whether this version of definition is more resistant to Costello's criticism or not.

This paper develops the work of Kerrigan et al. (2011) by considering the impact of the celebrity artist on the associated production and consumption activities. It also considers the role which entrepreneurial marketing plays in helping to create the celebrity artist aura. The artist Thomas Kinkade is used to illustrate how this occurs in practice. Here, authenticity and nostalgia dimensions are also influential factors. Underpinning these relationships are the roles played out by the media, including communication of celebrity artist identity, and the catalysing of its commodification within the celebrity artist brandscape. An enduring celebrity brand results due to the market creation activities of the celebrity artist. A conceptual model is developed which synthesises the factors behind the production and consumption of the celebrity artist which can stimulate further research. This paper provides innovative insight into the world of the celebrity artist by interrogating the market making and shaping devices behind successful production and consumption practices.

I would like to thank the Belkin Art Gallery for their courage, willingness and insight in allowing this unconventional process to take place. This exhibition is a step towards reconciliation. As we move forward, I ask you to think about how you are going to carry this message of hope and optimism that we can achieve better things for this great country of ours. Justice can be had and equality is real. This reconciliation that we are moving towards is an undiscovered journey and has to be a new covenant between all of us. We are going to dream dreams that we have never dreamt for ourselves. And finally, I hope that the objects, the sounds and the images in this exhibition will be part of the sacred space that allows us to embrace this knowledge into our hearts and minds.

In recent decades ‘gender’ has had a strong institutional success: it has become a central issue for social reform programmes on a regional, national and global level. At the same time, concepts of ‘gender’ have been adopted by political grassroots movements and have inspired artistic creation. The article tracks the travels of concepts of ‘gender’ through the public sphere. It investigates art and popular visual culture that have been stimulated by social science and philosophical concepts of ‘gender’. Examples of visual arts and film are examined in relation to the visual output of official gender mainstreaming strategies as well as of third-wave feminism and other forms of contemporary political activism.
Usually contemporary cultural and gender studies mainly conceptualize images as active agents in enforcing social norms, including gender norms. In contrast to this, the text focuses in particular on the popular appeal of images and visual culture and on their disseminating as well as promotional, founding, activating, authenticating and challenging force. Part of this is also to investigate the image struggles that the various artistic and pop-adoptions of ‘gender’ become involved in.
