Mulberry, belonging to the family Moraceae, is a mainstay of sericulture and is also found to be rich in bioactive phytoconstituents. It is well acclaimed for its antioxidant nature, therapeutic properties, and ethno-botanical desirability. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in exploring natural sources of antioxidants due to their potential health benefits. By analyzing the phytochemical constituents of these leaves using GC-MS, this study aims to provide valuable insights into their antioxidant properties and their potential role in preventing oxidative stress-related diseases. Understanding the antioxidant effects of Morus alba L. leaves can contribute to the development of new therapeutic interventions and dietary recommendations for maintaining optimal health. Methanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane extracts of dried leaves were prepared by Soxhlet extraction method and analyzed for bioactive phytochemicals using GC-MS technique. The GC-MS analysis detected the presence of sixteen bioactive phytoconstituents in the leaf extracts of Morus alba L. mainly, alcohols, phytosterols, organic acids, terpenes, long-chain hydrocarbons, esters which were confirmed by comparing their retention time, peak area, peak height and mass spectra with known compounds identified by NIST library. Las plantas son una parte fundamental de los sistemas de medicina. Para contar con una fuente vegetal como alternativa terapéutica, es indispensable demostrar científicamente su utilidad. Las especies Clusia minor L., Caesalpinia bahamensis Lam., Murraya paniculata L, Phania matricarioides (Spreng.) Griseb. y Lippia alba Mill, que crecen en Cuba son utilizadas tradicionalmente para el tratamiento de diferentes afecciones, sin embargo, los estudios fitoquímicos y farmacológicos que avalen esta utilidad y que permitan establecer su calidad, son escasos o nulos. Objetivos: determinar los principales parámetros farmacognósticos para establecer su calidad como droga vegetal, identificar los principales metabolitos presentes en las mismas y evaluar preliminarmente algunas de sus propiedades farmacológicas. Métodos: Se determinaron los requerimientos de calidad de algunas de las especies mediante evaluaciones farmacognósticas, se aplicaron métodos fitoquímicos, se caracterizaron estructuralmente los principales compuestos aislados y se evaluaron los efectos antioxidantes, diurético, antilitiásico, antiinflamatorio, antimicrobiano y antiparasitario de algunos de sus extractos. Resultados: Se establecieron las especificaciones de calidad de las drogas crudas, extractos y formulaciones diseñadas, así como los marcadores químicos. Se pudieron extraer, aislar, purificar y caracterizar algunos de los principales componentes químicos, constituyendo muchos de ellos nuevos reportes para las especies y el género. Se demostraron el potencial bioactivo de las plantas evaluadas y su baja toxicidad. Conclusiones: Las especies estudiadas constituyen un recurso potencial en el campo de los fitoterápicos, ampliando el conocimiento químico-farmacognóstico de la flora cubana y la utilidad terapéutica real de las mismas. Context: Malva spp. have been widely used in the world as traditional remedies. In Ecuadorian markers Malva sylvestris and Malva pseudolavatera are the species most commercialized. However, the scientific information about M. pseudolavatera is little. Aims: To determine the chemical composition and antioxidant capacity of the aqueous extracts of the leaves of both species. Methods: Aqueous extracts were partitioned with butanol and the fractions obtained were analyzed by GC/MS. Total extracts were evaluated as antioxidant using FRAP, DPPH and ABTS assays. Results: Differences in the chemical composition were found between the extracts. Both extracts showed the presence of polysaccharides, phenolic acids and fatty acids, but in M. sylvestris were identified polyols, which there was not observed in M. pseudolavatera. The aqueous extracts showed free radical scavenging and ferric reducing power capacities in vitro assays, being M. sylvestris the most promissory antioxidant, possibly due to the presence of polyols in the extract. In the present research were reported 39 phytochemical compounds by first time for the specie M. pseudolavatera. Conclusions: Aqueous extracts of the leaves of M. sylvestris and M. pseudolavatera showed antioxidant capacity associated with the presence of phenolic acids, polysaccharides and flavonoids in the extracts.

Introduction: Methanol extract of X. moluccensis was found to be significantly effective in scavenging DPPH method. Therefore, this research is a follow-up research study from Budiarso et al (2020).. The methanol extract was then fractionated and tested for antioxidant activity. Objective: To assess antioxidants activity of methanolic fractions from stem bark of Kayu Sarampa. Method: The Stem bark was extracted with Reflux method using hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol as solvent. The methanolic extract was fractionated using a chromatographic column were subjected to the antioxidant activity assay by the 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method. Results: F3 Fractions IC 50 of X. moluccensis exhibits the highest DPPH scavenging activity compared with F2, F3, ascorbic acis as control positif, F5, and F4, wich are 4.64, 6.79, 9.69, 10.49, and 227.44 respectively and Ferric reducing power from methanolic fraction of X. moluccensis stembark F3 exhibits higher antioxidant power compared to F2, F1, F5, ascorbic acid and F4, respectively which are 667.8 μmol/gr, 607.8 μmol/gr, and 573.8 340.48 and 309.8 μmol/gr, respectively

Standardized criteria for herbal assessment are urgently needed because of advancements in analytical technology and increased popularity of herbal remedies. The present study aims to formulate a chemical fingerprint of leaf extract of Morus nigra L. using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Preliminary phytochemical analysis confirms the existence of bioactive phytoconstituents. To determine whether dried leaf powder complied with international standards, Proximate Analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was performed. Optimization studies further develop and improve chemical fingerprinting norms. Morus nigra L. leaf extracts are known to possess promising phytochemical compounds necessary for the advancement of multiple plant derived bioactive drugs. The leaf consists of minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber, amino acids, phytosterols, flavonoids, benzofurans and stilbenes. Qualitative phytochemical screening and HPTLC fingerprinting was carried out using CamagLinomat V applicator, CamagReprostar 3, a photo-documentation chamber, CamagTlc Scanner 3 and Hamilton syringe and Win Cats-4 software. FTIR analysis in mid infrared region (4000-400 cm-1) was carried out using Alpha II Compact FTIR spectrometer by Bruker. Preliminary qualitative phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, triterpenes, phenolic compounds, phytosterols and flavonoids in the methanolic extract of the plant's leaves. The pharmacognostic profile of Morus nigra L. was determined by an HPTLC fingerprinting analysis that expressed the total number of peaks, peak heights, peak area, peak percent area, and Rf values. The FTIR spectroscopic analysis indicated the presence of various functional groups like alcohols, phenols, esters, amines, ethers, carboxylic acid, phosphate ion, oximes, ketones, ammonium ion, etc. by showing distinctive peak values that ranged from 3500-1000 cm-1 Both HPTLC fingerprinting and FTIR analysis methods are reliable, accurate, cost-effective methods correctly suitable for qualitative analysis, quantification and identification of bioactive and pharmaceutic phytocompounds which are abundant in therapeutic value and have a promising future ahead in the treatment of several disorders. This study can be utilized as a tool for the verification, authenticity, and standardization of plant material.

Resumen Context: Caesalpinia bahamensis Lam. is a medicinal plant used by the Cuban population to treat renal and hepatic diseases. However, this species lacks scientific studies that support its biological applications. Dhar district is mainly inhabited by different tribal communities and livelihood of these tribal peoples depends mainly upon the land, agriculture, hunting, fishing and collection of food product, bamboo work and labor of any kind. Fishing is an alternative occupation of the Bheel tribes and folk of the study area. They use their indigenous knowledge about plants for local fishing communities easily. Fish traps made of natural conservation using indigenous knowledge system of traditionally employed to catch the fishes in inland water bodies. In addition to agriculture, fishing and trapping are other part of life for the tribal people. The paper reports ethnobotanical study based on the traditional medicinal plants used by the local population for the treatment of skin diseases. The main aim of the study was to observe and document medicinal plants of Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh. In the present study exhaustive field exploration and study was conducted to survey medicinal plants originating in eight tehsils of Seoni District from November 2019 to November 2020. The ethnobotanical data was collected using field work and survey method by performing semi-structured interviews and group discussions with the traditional healers and the local population. The ethnomedicinal survey yielded documentation of 97 plant species belonging to 43 families and 90 genera. The most dominant families observed in the study were Fabaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Poaceae, Moraceae, Caesalpinaceae, Rutaceae, Apiaceae, Anacardiaceae, Zingiberaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Rosaceae, Liliaceae, Arecaceae and Malvaceae. The tribals possess tremendous traditional knowledge of medicinal plants that can be used to cure different ailments. However, urbanization and expansion on agricultural practices have become a major threat to the medicinal plants. Hence, it is of utmost importance to preserve the indigenous knowledge of herbal medicines through identification and systematic documentation. The present study also aims to document the use of traditional herbal medicines of Seoni district that are used for curing skin problems. Conservation of the traditionally important plant species with the help of local population will enhance the ethnomedicinal diversity of the place.

Background: Insulin resistance has important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including diabetes. Recent study showed that oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are involved in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. Harmless antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapeutic alternatives have been proposed, for example, the consumption of Sechium Edule Jacq. Swartz (chayote). This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of chayote (Sechium Edule Jacq. Swartz) on insulin resistance in rat with diabetes mellitus type 2 induced by STZ-NA-HFDD. Subjects and Method: This was a randomized controlled trial posttest only with control group design. A sample of 44 rats was selected for this study at random, divided into 11 groups. Doses of ethanol extract of squash divided in 3 categories including: 45 mg/kgBW, 100 mg/kgBW and 150 mg/kgBW. The independent variable was ethanol extract of chayote. The dependent variables were blood sugar level, malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxida Dismutase (SOD), and HOMA-IR. Differences in mean between groups were tested by One Way ANOVA and post hoc test. Results: The mean differences of blood sugar level were not statistically signi¬ficant (p= 0.525), with the lowest level of blood sugar level was in 45 mg/kgBW ethanol extract of chayote group (Mean= 155.16; SD= 31.92). The mean differences of MDA level were statistically significant (p= 0.001), with the highest MDA level was in 100 mg/ kgBW ethanol extract of chayote group (Mean= 1.40; SD= 0.23). The mean differences of insulin resistance level were not statistically significant (p= 0.071), with the lowest insulin resistance level was in 45 mg/ kg-BW ethanol extract of chayote group (Mean= 0.16; SD= 0.08). The mean differrences of level of superoxide dismutase were not statistically significant (p= 0.525), with the highest level of superoxide dismutase was in 45 mg/ kgBW ethanol extract of chayote group (Mean= 1.10; SD= 0.75). Conclusion: The low dose (45 mg/ kgBW) of chayote ethanol extract can effectively lower blood sugar, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance level. The 100 mg/ kgBW dose of chayote ethanol extract can effectively increase MDA.

All fractions were analyzed by TLC and phytochemical screening. The compounds of the chloroform fraction were identified by GC/MS, while the ethyl acetate and methanol fractions were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated by the DPPH and FRAP assays.

Results: Ten compounds were identified by GC/MS of the chloroform fraction, associated with fatty acids, terpenoids and phytosterols. The major compounds of this fraction were octacosanol, monopalmitin and palmitic acid. The presence of flavonoids in the ethyl acetate and methanol fractions was demonstrated by phytochemical screening, TLC and UV spectroscopy. The three fractions showed antioxidant capacity in the DPPH assay, with the methanol fraction (IC50=11.1 µg/mL) being the most active. The ethyl acetate fraction (equivalent to 100.7 µmol ascorbic acid) and the methanol fraction (equivalent to 37.3 µmol ascorbic acid) showed antioxidant capacity in the FRAP assay at concentrations of 125 µg/mL and 1000 µg/mL, respectively.

Conclusions: The fractions evaluated showed antioxidant capacity in the DPPH and FRAP assays, possibly associated with the presence of phenols and flavonoids.

Context: The Sechium edule fruit is grown and consumed because of their nutritional values in different countries of Latin America. Costa Rica is one of the most important producers and exporters. It is consumed as an antioxidant because its flavonoid content suggests such activity; however, the selection of varieties to crop does not involve the phytochemical profile of them. Aims: To characterize the phytochemical and antioxidant profile of the S. edule varieties grown in Costa Rica. Methods: The in vitro radical scavenging activity of different S. edule extracts were measured using DPPH and ORAC assays, as well as their inhibition of lipid peroxidation in rat liver and their redox potential by cyclic voltammetry. Flavonoids glycosides were isolated by HPLC and their structures were determined by NMR.Results: The S. edule varieties grown in Costa Rica showed a good radical scavenging activity and inhibition of lipid peroxidation; there were significant differences between varieties. In addition, the redox potential determined by electrochemical methods suggested the presence of flavonoids, which was confirmed by the isolation of apigenin 7-O-rutinoside and luteolin 7-O-rutinoside. Conclusions: The antioxidant potential of varieties of S. edule grown in Costa Rica was confirmed, identifying the 845 variety as the best antioxidant profile.

Context: Some flavonoids have been described as neuroprotectors. Gossypitrin (Gos) is a natural occurring flavonoid and the main bioactive substance from the flowers of Talipariti elatum Sw. (Majagua azul), traditionally used in Cuba as expectorant and antiasthmatic. Only few reports have documented its antioxidant properties.

Aims: To evaluate the antioxidant and cytoprotective effects of Gos against cyanide-induced oxidative stress and cell death in PC12 cells.

Methods: Gos effects on DPPH/ ABTS radical scavenging, ferric reducing power and lipid peroxidation were examined. The ischemia/reperfusion neuronal damage was produced by exposing PC12 cells to KCN in glucose-free medium. Gos was added to the incubation medium 30 min before chemical hypoxia induction. The neuroprotective potential of Gos was assessed by measuring cell viability by the MTT assay, the antioxidant enzymes SOD and CAT, and GSH and lipid peroxidation levels. Rutin (Rut), the well-known antioxidant, was used as a reference compound.

Results: Gos showed a potent intrinsic antioxidant capacity evidenced by low IC50 and EC50 values for DPPH/ABTS/malondialdehyde and ferric reducing power, respectively. Pre-treatment of PC12 cells with Gos, significantly increased their survival against KCN, restored the levels of GSH and the SOD and CAT enzymes activities, as well as reduced the level of lipid peroxidation. Its antioxidant effects were higher than those elicited by Rut.

Conclusions: The results show for the first time the neuroprotective potential of Gos against hypoxic cell damage, probably associated to its antioxidant effects.

An ethnobotanical study focused on medicinal utility of plants was carried out among the Munda and Santal communities of Tripura, India with aims to document the traditional knowledge of the medicinal plants used in various ailments. The information was based on normal conversation, interview and discussion with local herbal practitioners, elderly men and women of different tribal communities. In this study, a total of 31 plant species belonging to 23 families were described which have been used in the treatment of around 27 diseases. Most frequently medicated claims were dentalgia diabetes and gastritis. Apart from them the other uses includes gynaecological problems, cuts and wounds, skin diseases, urinary troubles All these claims need to be subjected to previous established literature to validate the potentiality of these plants and plant parts as drugs.

Tamarind leaves are added to fish soups and other soups. Folk medicine uses Tamarind leaves for sprains and swelling.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Michelia champaca flowers. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by using in-vitro assay models like Total antioxidant capacity, Nitric oxide radical scavenging assay, Reducing Power Assay and Hydrogen Peroxide Scavenging Activity. All the antioxidant activities were compared with standard antioxidant such as ascorbic acid. Methanolic extract of the plant showed effective free radical scavenging activity at 300µg concentration. The IC50 values of the ethanolic extract of Michelia champaca flowers were found to be 260 µg in total antioxidant activity, 150 µg in nitric oxide radical assay, 240 µg in reducing power assay and 280 µg in hydrogen peroxide assay. The results obtained in this study showed that the flowers of Michelia champaca have antioxidant properties which provide a basis for the traditional use of the plant.
