Ancient Greek Religion

In his Atheists & Atheism before the Enlightenment, Prof. Michael Hunter has argued that in early modern France atheistic ideas were shared and discussed in 'informal and irreverent venues' (Hunter, 2023, p.73), such as coffee houses, private correspondence, and parties. However, this picture is compromised by 'sliding and inclusive definitions, the overlap between the real and the imaginary, the ambivalence, [and] the element of cliché': there is always a 'mirage' of atheism in history which every scholar of atheism will struggle to separate from the real. Today I will be elaborating on and attempting to clarify some elements of the thesis that Hunter and a growing number of other scholars of historical atheism have tentatively deployed: that atheism is not a constructed philosophical worldview, as it is often imagined to be, but is centred around an unbelief which is mostly either uncaused or has emotional causes. This rethought psychology of atheism will provide a framework for locating atheism in space, as well as evidence, in ancient Greece. This will substantially expand on the theory behind my book and demonstrate that any 'mirage' is a constructed one: historical atheism is real, discoverable, and abundantly present in the ancient material when we are invested in finding it rather than excluding it and we understand what it is we are looking for and therefore where to look for it.

A tension is apparent from the earliest descriptions of the gods in Homer, between supremely powerful, abstracted cosmic entities and individually motivated, morally ambiguous, embodied, human-like figures. The gods of the Epic tradition seem to have provoked cutting criticisms in Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Protagoras, and others. There were many attempts to reconcile this tension, including allegorical interpretations of the gods, perhaps beginning with Theagenes of Rhegium in around 525 BC. But many of the core criticisms had enduring and wide influence across Greek culture, particularly on the bodily form and immanence of the gods, and depictions and cult worship of them. Naturally, this tension was also baked into the traditions of Greek atheism, partly in irreverence towards statues of the gods: from the accusations of impious embezzlement and adorning of the statue of Athena by Pheidias, through the mutilation of the herms in 415BC, to the supposed chopping up of a statue of Herakles to use as fire-wood by Diagoras. There is a good case to be made not only for sampling more material culture – statues, dedications, pottery, and so on – but also, in seeking discussions of the atheism of concrete godly bodiliness in ancient Greece, moving attention away from philosophical discourses. Deeply unserious contexts are of increasing research interest to the student of historical atheism: those that show a ‘cynical and this-worldly attitude to politics and religion’, an ‘iconoclastic manner’ of humour, wit, and scoffing (Hunter Atheists and Atheism 2023). The highly political and socially aware fun-poking of Aristophanes is a particularly interesting lens for thinking about atheism and the ambivalent function of divine embodiment in Greek society, especially in plays like the Clouds which confront atheism directly. These works were certainly impactful on the history of atheism and theism in Greece beyond Socrates’ contentions as recorded in Plato’s Apology.

Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae preserves an invaluable treasure of quotations from authors whose works have been lost. The work takes the form of an extensive literary banquet, in which knowledge is transmitted dialogically by twenty-nine learned anqueters. The quotations from historians, in particular, offer crucial insight into how Athenaeus employs and integrates his sources. The historians of the fourth century BCE, although temporally distant from Athenaeus, are perfectly woven into the fabric of the text and play a key role in shaping the reception of ancient historiography during the Imperial period. Throughout the work, Athenaeus constructs a web of intertextual references that link page to page, paragraph to paragraph, and book to book. Book III accentuates this network of quotations, as the authors appear to communicate with one another within the many themes included in this part of the work. This thesis aims to examine how Athenaeus makes use of his literary sources and to contribute to the study of the reception of Greek historiography in the Imperial age and to the understanding of the dialogue between erudition and historical memory in Imperial Greek literature.

Abstract: Proclaiming that ‘Greek was free from Rime’s Infection’, Ben Jonson encapsulated the general opinion that would reign for centuries. Many since have claimed that rhyme is too artificial, barbaric, childish, feminine, or medieval for the ancient Greeks. Some have disagreed, including Jonathan Swift’s cousin Theophilus; and more recently a quiet consensus has been steadily growing that there are occasional rhymes even in Homer. But one still regularly encounters the claim that the Greeks avoided rhyme. Latin poets have always been treated differently, especially Ovid and some medieval Irish authors. After a review of critical opinion and a look at some of the Latin that everyone agrees to rhyme, we will see that many germs, so to speak, of ‘Rime’s Infection’ are detectable already in the earliest preserved Greek poetry.

In this article I intend to capture the flexions of the concept of "first principle" in Aristotle's posterity, until R. Descartes, insisting only on some moments that I consider important in this history: Aristotle, Neoplatonists [Plotinus, for example], Dionysius Areopagite, scholastics [Duns Scotus, for example] and R. Descartes. After this short historical excursion, I will try to highlight the fact that what the French philosopher calls cogito is close, from a functional point of view, at least, to the first Neoplatonic principle, i.e. it is a principle that generates knowledge, but not in an ontological paradigm, as it happens in the case of Neoplatonists, but in a gnoseological acceptance.

La letteratura greca e latina è ricca di figure femminili che, nel ruolo di incantatrici, streghe e necromanti, spiccano per il loro fascino e carisma, o per il timore che incutono in coloro, in genere uomini, che hanno a che fare con loro. Guardando al racconto del mito e alla poesia, figure come Circe e Medea, o, per la letteratura ellenistica e imperiale, Simeta, Canidia ed Erittò, sono l'archetipo di tutte le rappresentazioni della 'strega' comparse successivamente nella letteratura occidentale. Eppure, allontanandosi dalla letteratura e avvicinandosi alla magia 'pratica', quella effettivamente prodotta all'interno del mondo greco e romano, ci si accorge di quanto poco sappiamo, escludendo l'invenzione letteraria, del reale apporto del mondo femminile alla magia e di quale fosse il suo rapporto con essa al di là degli stereotipi. Obiettivo di questo lavoro è analizzare il ruolo giocato da figure femminili all'interno dei testi magici pervenuti. Si eviterà, quindi, volutamente, di basare l'analisi su descrizioni fornite da opere letterarie (anche quelle celeberrime), per concentrarsi, invece, sulle testimonianze della magia effettivamente praticata nel mondo greco e romano. Tali testimonianze sono contenute prevalentemente nel corpus dei cosiddetti Papiri Greci Magici (spesso abbreviati in PGM), raccolta eterogenea e diacronica di testi, in gran parte trascritti su papiro, ma non solo, provenienti dall'Egitto e diffusi su un ampio arco di tempo, dall'inizio del III secolo a.C.

El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar un análisis exhaustivo de los adjetivos temáticos en micénico para analizar su comportamiento respecto de la moción de género. Como es sabido, en las lenguas indoeuropeas antiguas, incluido el griego, los adjetivos temáticos presentan habitualmente formas especiales de femenino en -ā < *-eH 2 . Sin embargo, en griego existe una importante excepción a este respecto, ya que habitualmente los adjetivos temáticos compuestos carecen de una forma específi ca de femenino para la concordancia con los sustantivos de ese género. No obstante, en griego del primer milenio existen, a su vez, excepciones a esta regla en las dos direcciones: adjetivos compuestos que presentan formas específi cas de femenino y adjetivos simples que carecen de formas específi cas de femenino. Téngase en cuenta que la falta de moción de género en los adjetivos temáticos compuestos es un rasgo específi co del griego entre las lenguas indoeuropeas antiguas, de forma que las opiniones de los estudiosos están divididas sobre si el griego conserva en estos adjetivos la situación originaria de falta de marca específi ca de femenino, que las otras lenguas indoeuropeas habrían perdido por extensión analógica a favor de los adjetivos de tres terminaciones 2 , o, por el contrario, se trata de una innovación del griego que tuvo una cierta extensión en las fases más antiguas de esta lengua. Desde esta perspectiva el estudio en detalle de los datos micénicos puede arrojar algo de luz acerca de esta cuestión. En las obras generales sobre el dialecto micénico 3 se suele señalar que en este punto la situación en este dialecto era semejante a la del griego del primer milenio. Sin embargo, que nosotros sepamos, no se ha realizado ningún análisis exhaustivo 1. Quiero dejar constancia de mi agradecimiento al prof. The followers of Dionysus are usually referred to by two different terms that are generally considered to be synonymous: βάκχαι and μαινάδες. Here we examine the use of both terms by Euripides in his tragedy Bacchae, one of the most important works for the conception of dionysism, and we try to determine whether they are really synonymous or
whether there is a significant difference between them.

Pentru a explica acest dublu aspect, legitim şi ilegitim, public şi aproape ascuns, al sacrificiului ritual, Hubert şi Mauss, în "Essai sur la nature et la fonction du sacrifice"1, invocă acel caracter sacru al victimei. Dacă violenŃa ar juca un rol în sacrificiu, cel puŃin în anumite stadii ale existenŃei sale rituale, am deŃine astfel un element de analiză interesant, fiindcă este independent, cel puŃin parŃial, al unor variabile culturale adesea necunoscute, prost cunoscute sau mai puŃin cunoscute, poate, decît ne imaginăm. O dată trezită, dorinŃa de violenŃă antrenează anumite schimbări corporale care-i pregătesc pe oameni de luptă. Această dispoziŃie violentă arc o anumită durată. Nu trebuie să vedem în ea un simplu reflex care şi-ar întrerupe efectele de îndată ce stimulul ar înceta să acŃioneze. Storr notează că e mai dificil să domoleşti dorinŃa de violenŃă decît să o declanşezi, mai ales în condiŃiile normale ale vieŃii în societate. Se spune că adesea violenŃa este "iraŃională". Nu-i lipsesc totuşi motivele ; ea ştie chiar să găsească motive extrem de bune cînd are chef să se dezlănŃuie. Oricît de bune ar fi însă aceste motive, ele nu merită niciodată să fie luate în serios. ViolenŃa însăşi le va uita, dacă obiectul vizat iniŃial rămîne intangibil şi continuă să o sfideze. ViolenŃa nesatisfăcută caută şi sfîrşeşte întotdeauna prin a găsi o victimă de schimb. FiinŃei care îi stîrnea furia, ea îi substituie deodată o alta, care nu are nici un motiv special să atragă asupra sa fulgerele violentului, în afara faptului că este vulnerabilă şi se află la îndemînă. Această aptitudine de a-şi oferi obiecte de schimb, aşa cum sugerează multe indicii, nu este rezervată violenŃei umane. Joseph de Maistre, în cartea sa Eclaircissement sur Ies sacriîices, observă că victimele animale au întotdeauna ceva omenesc, ca şi cum ar trebui mai bine înşelată violenŃa : Erau alese întotdeauna, dintre animale, cele.mai valoroase prin utilitatea lor, cele mai blîride, mai inocente, mai legate de om prin instinctul şi prin obiceiurile lor... Erau alese, din specia animală, victimele cele mai u/nane, dacă îmi este permis sâ mă exprim astfel. Etnologia modernă aduce uneori o confirmare a acestui gen de intuiŃie. în anumite comunităŃi pastorale care practică sacrificiul, animalele sînt strîns asociate cu existenŃa umană. La două popoare de pe parcursul superior al Nilului, de exemplu, riuerii, studiaŃi de E. E. Printre numele fiecărui individ există întotdeauna unul care desemnează şi un animal al cărui loc în turmă este omolog cu cel al stăpînului său în comunitate. Disputele între subsecŃii au frecvent drept obiect şeptclul ; toate daunele şi interesele se reglează în capete de animale, dotele matrimoniale constau în turme. ObservaŃiile făcute pe teren şi reflecŃia teoretică ne obligă să revenim, în explicarea sacrificiului, la ipoteza substituŃiei. Hubert şi Mauss, de exemplu, nu au încredere în ea, fără îndoială pentru că li se pare că antrenează un univers de valori morale şi religioase incompatibile cu ştiinŃa. The bachelor thesis examines the iconographic transformations of the goddess Isis from her origin in Egypt to her adaptation in Hellenistic and Roman settings. The aim was to analyse how cultural, political, and religious influences have affected the image and role of Isis, and to identify elements of continuity that have persisted despite the changes. The research demonstrated that the iconography of Isis underwent significant transformations reflecting syncretism, political propaganda, and cultural adaptation processes. In Egypt, Isis was associated with the myth of Osiris. In the New Kingdom period, she took on attributes of Hathor, such as cow horns and the solar disc, expanding her role to that of cosmic goddess and maternal protector. The Hellenistic period brought syncretism with Greek deities, especially Demeter. Isis was depicted with attributes such as kalathos or ears of grain. At the same time, she became part of the dynastic cult of the Ptolemies. In the Roman period, Isis was adapted to a Roman audience, and syncretization with Fortuna brought attributes such as the horn of plenty and the rudder, emphasizing the values of prosperity and protection. Her depiction on the coins also played an important role, helping to spread her cult across the Roman Empire. These coins not only referred to the Egyptian origins of Isis through her distinctive attributes but also adapted her iconography to the Roman context, contributing significantly to her popularity among all social classes. Key elements of continuity were the sistrum, basileion, Isis’s knot and the Isis lactans motif, which symbolised motherhood and fertility. These attributes persisted in all periods, with their symbolism adapted to the needs of the time, for example, in Roman propaganda. Isis transformed from a temple goddess to a universal patroness however, retained her identity and functioned as a bridge between cultures.

This article belongs to the celebratory issue of BICS on its seventieth anniversary. It reviews the article of Christiane Sourvinou-Inwood published in BICS 32 (1985). I discuss the main points raised in her article about the representation of palm-trees with altars and parthenoi on Attic vases, as well as trace trends and developments of this topic in subsequent research.

This article maps the presence of the Greek goddess Hestia at Delphi, focusing on three kinds of sources: literature, inscriptions, and architectural sculpture. While the sacred hearth of Delphi burning inside Apollo's temple comes up frequently in scholarship, Hestia as a personified goddess is rarely mentioned and her presence at Delphi has not been analyzed until now. This silence is due to Hestia's ambiguous nature, which fluctuates between the thing after which she is named (the hearth) and the anthropomorphic goddess. Even at Delphi, where Hestia's aniconic role as the hearth is strong, she also appears in anthropomorphic form.

Islands&amp;#39; features constantly stirred the Greek artistic imagination and, from the archaic poets, through the fifth–century dramatists, to Plato&amp;#39;s Atlantis or the Hellenistic writers of paradoxography, literary islands&amp;#39; representations are strongly consistent between themselves. As the mythical thought and the poetic imagery, although embedded in images, work with analogies and parallels, the concept of insularity thus proceeds for the Greeks from these series of representations and cultural tropes. This chapter tries to retrace how did the Greeks perceive νησος &amp;#39;island&amp;#39; (compared to both the sea and the continent) and the shore (as liminal space between sea and earth), how did they represent the islands and thus the insularity. It is not so much the physical features of islands (commonly described with both realistic and schematic details) and specific island individuals as the metaphorical expressions intimately associated with the ways in which the Greeks represented the islands and the shores. More than realistic physical landscapes or island phenomena, they are traits of respectively, insular and liminal symbolism. Islands and shores, they both separate and, at the same time, join sea and land, water and earth, contiguous realms yet opposed in many respects.

REVUE DES LIVRES 381 a.C., connesso a Pitagora e alla sua dottrina dalle tradizioni pitagoriche riflesse soprattutto in Cicerone e Valerio ; il catalogo dei Pitagorici compilato da Aristosseno e riportato da Giamblico e i problemi legati ad alcuni nomi in esso contenuti (p. 139-146). -Pur rimanendo innegabile e per molti versi insuperabile il problema delle fonti e la difficoltà di trovare un percorso coerente e credibile tra mille rivoli di tradizione, Alfonso Mele ha il merito di avere saputo individuare e selezionare alla luce di ragionamenti stringenti i dati più attendibili su Pitagora. Orientandosi perfettamente in un panorama documentario così complesso l'A. ha saputo sistemare le notizie pervenute intorno al filosofo, alla sua dottrina, alla sua scuola e di creare così un percorso coerente che, da una parte, ne chiarisce vita, opera ed eredità, dall'altra, non manca di illuminare una realtà territoriale come la Magna Grecia arricchita dal magistero di un personaggio così carismatico. -G. En analysant les traces laissees sur le sol par le voleur de ses vaches, Apollon glisse une allusion a un Centaure en tant qu’auteur du vol, n’invoquant cependant cette hypothese que pour la rejeter aussitot. En depit du caractere incongru de ce faux syllogisme et par-dela ses effets comiques, cette allusion laisse devoiler des significations « theologiques » qui s’accordent avec les enjeux theogoniques de l’Hymne homerique a Hermes.

At several occasions during his campaigns, Alexander the Great staged gymnic, hippic and musical competitions. Until now scholars have assumed that the king founded new festivals, but the ancient evidence makes it quite clear that it were singular, non-recurrent events. Competitions like that, for which I suggest the term “campaign agones”, are also known from other Greek armies. “Campaign agones” should be added to the well-known categories (competitions at recurrent festivals, funeral contests, gymnasium agones) as a distinct, although less important, category in the Greek agonistic world.

Modern yapılarının yanında mitlere yaptıkları göndermelerle tragedyalar, ilkel inanç ve kabullerin bir yansıması, arkaik inançların dramatik temsilleridir. Bunun en iyi örneklerinden birinin de Oidipus Kolonos'ta tragedyası olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Günümüze ulaşan Antik Yunan edebiyatına mal edilen çok az tragedyada bu eser kadar mitik tanrı ve onlarla şekillenen inanç biçimlerine atıfta bulunulmuştur. Mitik inancın tragedyalar yoluyla böylece oyunla/sahneyle yeniden ele alındığı, kutsandığı, toplumsal belleğe farklı bir formla kodlandığı söylenebilir. Yunan tragedyalarında daha pek çok mesele tanrı-insan-izleyici düzleminde açıkça tartışmaya açılır. Demokratikleşmenin, ilerlemenin, yetkinin, yönetimin, bilgeliğin, erdemli olmanın tartışıldığı tiyatro sahnesine korobaşı ve koronun tesadüfen yerleştirildiği düşünülemez. Pek çok özelliklerinin yanı sıra aynı zamanda mitik hafızanın da koruyucusu koro ve korobaşı şahit, müdahale edici, uyarıcı, gözlemci, hatta bazen yol göstericidir. Araştırmada, Sophokles'in tragedya üçlemesinden ikincisi olan Oidipus Kolonos'ta üzerinden bazı çözümlemeler gerçekleştirilecek; daha özelinde bu tragedyaya kaynaklık eden veya tragedyalar içerisinde atıf yapılan, hatırlatılan, işaret edilen mitik unsurlar ve semboller ayrıntılı bir biçimde söz konusu metinden de alıntılamalar yapılarak irdelenecektir. Sonuçta ele alınan tragedya metninde bilinçli olarak sıkça başvurulan, atıfta bulunulan mitik tortuların, özellikle halkı ve süperegoyu temsil eden korobaşı ve koro tarafından hatırlatıldığı; tragedyanın sözlü kültürde yaşatılan mitik algı, kabul ve anlayışın bir devamı olarak inşa edilen temsillerden biri olduğu anlaşılmıştır.

L'articolo analizza la descrizione della natura delle piante e la tacita giustificazione del vegetarianismo fornite da Platone nel Timeo. Tale pratica alimentare sembra assumere un'utilità esclusivamente fisiologica: potrebbe darsi che Platone si fosse opposto a quanti pro-fessavano il vegetarianismo in qualità di mezzo necessario per purificare l'anima e per rag-giungere la felicità, come gli orfici, i pitagorici, Empedocle ma anche il suo discepolo Seno-crate. Attraverso il particolare valore attribuito a una dieta vegetariana, Platone priva di validità la pretesa degli altri filosofi: solo lo studio delle idee permette di ottenere la felicità.

This paper focuses on religious feasts 3 in Lesbos which motivate participation from both locals and foreigners. We aim at highlighting the changes and the causes that prompted the inhabitants of Lesbos to modify their festive practices and musical preferences. The paper refers to the period from the end of the 19th to 21st century (2022), drawing on previous research by members of the University of Aegean and supplemented by the field research material gathered as part of my PhD thesis. Taking everything into account, we conclude that the changes in panegyria, as well as in the festive practices are the result of social, economic and cultural changes, which are reinforced and/or expanded due to the development of technology and digital media, which in any case should not be considered separate and cut off from social becoming.

It is the contention of this research to explain the perceptual totality of composed groups of Classical Greek buildings in sacred precincts, as exemplified at Delphi and the Athenian Acropolis. The main proposal to be tested by the analysis of these architectural ensembles is that sacred Classical Greek architecture is not exclusively an architecture of three Classical orders, but an architecture on two hierarchical levels, namely the architecture of the divine level, as symbolised mainly by the Doric temple, as opposed to the architecture of the secondary human level, represented by the ancillary buildings in the approach areas that are characterised by a diminished scale, complexity and ambiguity.

La Macchina di Antikythera è un unicum assoluto nella storia della scienza e della tecnica. È la testimonianza concreta che la genialità della cultura ellenistica nel campo della matematica e della astronomia ha saputo esprimersi anche nella meccanica. È un documento esplicativo concreto e non semplicemente scritto della concezione del cosmo cui erano giunti personalità come Callippo, Metone, Archimede, Apollonio, Ipparco e tanti altri. Questa macchina, del I secolo a.C., che è stata esaminata da tantissimi studiosi contemporanei per comprenderne la struttura e le funzioni, è di una complessità comparabile a macchine astronomiche moderne. In questo saggio riassumo i risultati degli studi condotti nel corso di quasi un secolo, descrivendo in dettaglio la struttura interna e le funzioni. Discuterò di un punto che resta ambiguo: l'interpretazione degli studiosi alla soluzione meccanica dell'anomalia lunare. Riassumerò inoltre i risultati di alcuni studi di approfondimento relativi alle tecniche costruttive disponibili al tempo, e altri di analisi cinematica e dinamica con gli strumenti scientifici contemporanei. La più sublime, la più nobile tra le Fisiche scienze ella è senza dubbio l'Astronomia. L'uomo s'innalza per mezzo di essa come al di sopra di sé medesimo, e giunge a conoscere la causa dei fenomeni più straordinari.

This essay examines the representation of asylum and exile in two foundational Greek tragedies: Euripides’ Medea and Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus. By comparing the protagonists’ journeys through the lens of ancient and modern political thought, it explores how ancient Greek drama anticipated contemporary debates around displacement, hospitality, and moral belonging. The work also investigates the tragic dimension of the refugee condition and how it is intertwined with gender, justice, and divine authority, thus offering critical insights into the perennial relevance of ancient tragedy.
