American Literature

Liberalism is a term employed in a dizzying variety of ways across the humanities and social sciences. This essay seeks to reframe how the liberal tradition is understood. I start by delineating different types of response – prescriptive, comprehensive, explanatory – that are frequently conflated in answering the question “what is liberalism?” I then discuss assorted methodological strategies employed in the existing literature: after rejecting “stipulative” and “canonical” approaches, I outline a contextualist alternative. On this (comprehensive) account, liberalism is best characterised as the sum of the arguments that have been classified as liberal, and recognised as such by other self-proclaimed liberals, over time. In the remainder of the article I present an historical analysis of shifts in the meaning of liberalism in Anglo-American political thought between 1850 and 1950, focusing in particular on how John Locke came to be seen as a liberal. I also explore the emergence of the category of "liberal democracy". I argue that the scope of the liberal tradition was massively expanded during the middle decades of the twentieth century, such that it came to be seen by many as the constitutive ideology of the West. This capacious (and deeply confusing) understanding of liberalism was produced by a conjunction of the ideological wars fought against “totalitarianism” and assorted developments in the social sciences. Today we both inherit and inhabit it.

This paper critically reviews the current status of the concept of distance in human geography in order to argue that recent experimentally-driven work in construal-level theory offers ample opportunities for recasting distance as a key geographical trope. After analysing the four entangled dimensions of distance revealed by construal-level theory (spatial distance; temporal distance; social distance; and hypothetical distance), the paper articulates this research program from experimental psychology with geographical work on non-representational theory, geographical imaginations/imaginative geographies, learning as a geographical process, TimeSpace theorizing, and ontogenetic understandings of space. It is argued that the subjective understanding of distance afforded by construal-level theory can rescue distance from its entrenched association with positivistic geography and spatial analysis. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.geoforum.2016.07.018

This report reviews and categorizes the enormous corpus of knowledge produced by American academic and policy institutions about U.S. relations with the Middle East and other Islamic actors in the international arena. The report identifies five epistemic communities – conservatives, neoconservatives, realists, liberals and the left – and analyzes their discourses and policy recommendations. Finally, the policies that these epistemic communities recommended are evaluated and assessed. The author recommends a mixed-paradigmatic approach that will not only make the United States more effective in the Middle East but also underscore its continuing relevance to the security and the stability of the region and the global order.

This special issue addresses the possible connections and mutual benefits of examining together two analytic concepts – memory and periphery. These concepts receive much attention in various scholarly discussions, yet they have done so rather independently from each other. The potential applications and utilities of combining memory and periphery and the epistemic insights they provide for various disciplins are presented in the different contributions to this issue.

The most original and shocking interpretation of Lucretius in the last 40 years.

Thomas Nail argues convincingly and systematically that Lucretius was not an atomist, but a thinker of kinetic flux. In doing so, he completely overthrows the interpretive foundations of modern scientific materialism, whose philosophical origins lie in the atomic reading of Lucretius' immensely influential book De Rerum Natura.

This means that Lucretius was not the revolutionary harbinger of modern science as Greenblatt and others have argued; he was its greatest victim. Nail re-reads De Rerum Natura to offer us a new Lucretius--a Lucretius for today.

With a focus on the novel, this chapter appraises three major themes that emerged in the embryonic corpus of climate change fiction. The first concerns the denial, avoidance, and acceptance of the magnitude of climate change in the present and recent past. The second presents cautionary fables of the Anthropocene (the current epoch in which humans act as a geologic force), extrapolating current trends into devastated, depopulated and denatured futures. The third advances this implicit rebuke to the present by exploring the eco-politics of resistance, reform and revolution. I conclude by identifying two rising themes for the next decade of climate change fiction: aiding the ongoing transition to life after oil and depicting the amplified global inequalities of climate injustice.

In  what  sense  do  we  speak  of  the planetary university? This  essay  belongs  to  a  more  comprehensive, still  unpublished reflection  that the authors have been developing over  the  past  years  while teaching  and  doing  research in Italy  and  abroad. However,  the essay  delineates  neither  the  situation  of  single  academic institutions, nor  a  general picture obtained by induction starting  from a variety of observational data. Rather,  it  attempts  to clarify,  in  the  specific  situation in which the authors  operate,  the powers  that  act  upon  teaching  and  research  once  they  let  themselves  be  informed  by  the laws  of  the  earth  turned  into  a  planet, that is,  in the words  of  common  language, by the new order of the globalized earth.

The increased use of fossil fuels for energy consumption has causes environmental problems both locally and globally. The study investigates the anaerobic digestion in the production of biogas a renewable energy from the digestion and co-digestion of three different types of biodegradable wastes (cow dung, fruit waste and food waste) as an alternative for fossil fuels for energy consumption. This was carried out using a 25 Litres capacity plastic keg prototype biogas plant, constructed to investigate the anaerobic digestion in generating biogas. The experiment was batch operated and daily gas yield from the plant was monitored for 30 days. The slurry temperature and pH were also monitored and presented. The digester was charged with these wastes in the ratio of 1:1, of waste to water respectively. The mesophilic temperatures range attained within the testing period were 25  - 28.4  and a slurry temperature range of 24.4  -28.4 . The result obtained from the biogas production showed that the co-digestion of cow dung and food waste produced the highest biogas of 164.8%, followed by the co-digestion of the three waste (cow dung, fruit waste and food waste) which has a percentage of 91.0%, co-digestion of cow dung and fruit waste (83.9%), cow dung of 79.8%, food waste of 77.4% and fruit waste of 76.4% within this retention period. During the digestion period, the volume of biogas production and the changes in pH indicate that the pH decreases as the retention period increases. These results showed that co-digestion wastes produce more biogas than when the wastes are ordinarily used for biogas production. The study recommends that biogas is not just a renewable energy source but also an appropriate way of managing waste, having potential to replace fossil fuel.

Sigmund Freud the founder of modern psychiatry provides the opportunity to analyze the literary characters through the application of his psychoanalytic theory. In psychology, he puts forward the theory that the outcome of the inconsistency between id, ego and superego results in conflict. In order to form a healthy personality, one should balance his id, ego and superego. Repression happens as a result of this inconsistency. When one of these three parts of human psyche outweighs the other, one resorts to repress desires or past memories rather than articulating them. The aim of this paper is to analyze the main characters of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter from a Freudian psychoanalytic position revealing how these characters’ lives and personalities have been affected by their id, ego and superego.A detailed psychoanalytic analysis of The Scarlet Letter provides knowledge about psychological states of the central characters. These characters and their actions are intended to be analyzed in relation to the Freudian concept of id, ego and superego. The effects of id, ego and superego on their personalities are discussed during the analysis of the main characters of the novel by making references to their repressed childhood and past memories.

H. G. Wells was one of the most celebrated writers in the world during the first half of the twentieth century. Famed for his innovative fiction, he was also an influential advocate of socialism and the world state. What is much less well-known is that he was a significant contributor to debates about the nature of social science. This article argues that Wells’s account of social science in general, and sociology in particular, was shaped by an idiosyncratic philosophical pragmatism. In order to demonstrate how his philosophical arguments inflected his social thought, it explores his attack on prevailing theories of race, while also highlighting the limits of his account. The article concludes by tracing the reception of Wells’s ideas among social scientists on both sides of the Atlantic. Although his programme for utopian sociology attracted few disciples, his arguments about the dynamics of modern societies found a large audience among social scientists and political thinkers.

L’article a pour sujet la personnalité extraordinaire du kabbaliste le Rabbin Levi Isaac Krakovsky (1891–1966), un des étudiants oubliés du Rabbin Yehuda Leib Ashlag (1885–1955). Krakovsky diffusait l’enseignement de son maître en Amérique en anglais, écrivait des douzaines de livres et essayait d’établir des yeshivot de Kabbalistes. Contrairement à son maître, il présentait un enseignement exotérique et une vision de diffusion de la Kabbale dans le monde entier. Son influence était minime, mais un de ses élèves était Shraga Philip Berg qui continuait son chemin et le complétait de plusieurs points de vue. L’article se base sur de riches matières archivales, parmi lesquelles de longues essays de l’auteur en manuscrit qui sont décrits ici pour la premiere fois. D’une telle façon, nous décrivons le dévelopment de la Kabbale en Amérique du début du vingtième siècle jusqu’ aujourd’hui.

Affective Ecologies is an exploration of our emotional engagement with environmental narrative. Focusing on the American cultural context, the book develops an ecocritical approach that draws on the insights of affective science and cognitive narratology in order to give us a better understanding of how we interact with such narratives in ways that are both biologically universal and culturally specific. In doing so, it pays particular attention to the thesis that our minds are both embodied (in a physical body) and embedded (in a physical environment), not only when we interact with the real world but also in our engagement with imaginary worlds. How do we experience the virtual environments we encounter in literature and film on the sensory and emotional level? How do environmental narratives invite us to care for human and nonhuman others who are put at risk? And how do we feel about the speculative futures presented to us in ecotopian and ecodystopian texts? These are the central questions that are explored in the three parts of the book, questions that are important for anyone with an interest in the emotional appeal and persuasive power of environmental narratives.

The circumstances that have given rise to the Anthropocene concept require that we reassess our assumptions about human agency and human effects on the earth system. Human activities, and thus human choices, clearly lie at the root of the great environmental predicament of our age, which is not primarily an ecological crisis, though its ramifications are far reaching within ecological systems. Rather, it is a crisis of culture. If the humanities "are a unique repository of knowledge and insight into the rich diversity of the human experience" from which we learn to make sense of our "responses, motivations and actions" in the face of challenges, then it is risky to omit humanities knowledge from scientific assessment and consultation processes informing environmental policy.

An analysis of the use of Medusa in the feminist revisionist poetry of Ann Stanford and Rachel Blau DuPlessis. In this essay I address the creation of the (in)famous Gorgon as a monster by traditional patriarchal narratives, before analysing the ways in which Stanford and DuPlessis seek to deconstruct this image by focussing on the part of the Medusa myth that makes her a victim - her rape at the hands of Poseidon. Using the work of Stanford and DuPlessis, I will demonstrate how feminist revisionist mythmaking has turned Medusa into a source of power as an icon of the female gaze and sexuality.

The research focused on the management of stormwater and sewage generated in a
developed urban area - Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. This involved the design of sanitary sewers, stormwater collection networks and a central sewage treatment plant. The total estimate of the wastewater generated from various locations was 5.067 million litres per day based on the population of approximately 26,131. The existing sewage disposal system in use in the institution was the septic tank-soakaway arrangement for individual buildings. The design of the sanitary sewers and stormwater collection networks are based on the principles of hydraulics. The results obtained were used to analyze and design the drains and pipe sizes for the open channels and the closed conduits respectively. The size of the drains for stormwater collection networks was designed with the assumption of 0.75 and 1 meter width. Also, calculations were made for square drain (depth equals width)
to be able to select practicable sizes. For optimum size solution, pipe size of 100 mm was found to be suitable for wastewater conveyance from the office areas. The sizes of pipes calculated for flows from residential quarters are too small, hence available commercial pipe sizes were selected. Wastewater samples were collected at various locations and were determined through laboratory tests to ascertain the concentrations of significant physical, chemical and biological content of the wastewater for proper selection of appropriate treatment processes. A BOD concentration of 350 mg/l and 353 mg/l obtained for residential and office areas respectively translated to high pollution load requires treatment before ultimate discharge into the receiving stream. The proposed sewage treatment plant was sited
at the lowest topographical level, far enough from the office and residential quarters. This would allow flow by gravity from the various points. The sewage treatment plant components selected include screen chamber, grit chamber, skimming tank and rectangular/circular primary settling/sedimentation tank (PST), which are designed to optimal dimensions.

It is in this political-ethical sense of lived  culture that co-editors Christopher Connery and I had deployed “worlding” to enact a stipulated cultural-political-creative ethos or tactic of situated opposition to the telos of globalization, in our co-edited collection The Worlding Project: Doing Cultural Studies in the Era of Globalization.  Worlding is not so much a theme or subject as it is a tactic or a practice or projection of world-making, projecting forth, and life-world becoming and building-up to use a Goethe-like word for cultural formation.  “Worlding” (as I phrased it in the “Afterword:  Worlding as Future Tactic” to Worlding Project) means at once a mode of “building up a life-world palpably disclosing its lived-in modalities, boundaries, tactics, and historical processes” of survival and emergence. Worlding stands for a range of alter-globalization and situated localization practices being projected forward out into and across the everyday world that is riddled and driven by mandates of capitalist dynamism and globalization.  Worlding-as-projection is still shadowed by residual forces and forms of 'deworlding,' as well as stands opposed to those called (by Tsing and Haraway et al) 'reworlding':  that is to say, energies and practices of going and coming, breaking down and building up life-worlds.  The former process (deworlding) suggests enduring impacts of empire, colonialism, and turbo-capitalism upon other life-worlds and threatened ways of being.  In one compressed verb 'worlding' means building-up the life-world that is, actively worlding it.  Or, playing off from post-Heidegger or postcolonial definitions of worlding, we would offer this summarizing definition:  "WORLDING (v) - a historical process of taking care, setting limits, entering into, & making world-horizons come near & become local, situated, in/formed, cared for; instantiated as an uneven/incomplete material-cultural process of world-making and world-becoming."

Activists and scholars often describe environmental racism as an immoral and illegal dumping of toxic waste into poor, Black, and people of colour communities. Yet, the use of environmental habitats in (and with) which Black people are mutilated, concealed, and contained has gone under-conceptualised as a mode of environmental racism. I propose an expansion of familiar understandings of environmental racism to include the use of environmental habitats to commit and conceal acts of anti-Black violence. This proposition draws from an understanding that environmental racism includes the mutual devaluation of Black bodies and the spaces in which they inhabit. I ground this study in Afro-Pessimist and Black geographies thought, research on environmental racism and cultural analyses of Black literary and performance art. Finally, I draw from the spatial and racial analyses imprinted within James Baldwin's immense catalogue to put forth Blackness as an alternate human ethic imbued with political possibilities, an ontological conceptualisation which may push activists and scholars to seek redress beyond the policy rationales and recommendations commonplace among today's struggles for environmental justice.

In 1980, the Bechtel Group, the conglomerate then and now in charge of maintaining and securing several of the nuclear facilities on US soil, commissioned a " Human Interference Task Force " (HITF), which would " investigate problems connected with the postclosure, final marking of a filled nuclear waste repository. " The task of this report, which was later submitted to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission via the US Department of Energy, was " to devise a method of warning future generations not to mine or drill at that site unless they are aware of the consequences of their actions. "  As future civilizations might not be able to understand any of the human languages used today, or to decipher mathematical equations, nor to be perceptive to any other of our signs, the task boiled down to communicating danger beyond the confines of our own cognitive framework. Among the specialists involved was Thomas Sebeok, a noted semiotician, who proposed a disquieting idea: the foundation of a new religion that would ensure the transmission of the relevant information pertaining to the nuclear waste repositories: The Atomic Priesthood

In an attempt to start rectifying a lamentable disparity in scholarship, we evince fruitful points of similarity and difference in the ideas of Simone de Beauvoir and Ayn Rand, paying particular attention to their views on long-term projects. Endorsing what might be called an “Ethic of Resolve,” Rand praises those who undertake sustained goal-directed actions such as careers. Beauvoir, however, endorses an “Ethic of Ambiguity” that makes her more skeptical about the prospects of carrying out lifelong projects without deluding oneself. Our study teases apart the strengths and drawbacks of these views.

Can ecological distribution conflicts turn into forces for sustainability? This overview paper addresses in a systematic conceptual manner the question of why, through whom, how, and when conflicts over the use of the environment may take an active role in shaping transitions toward sustainability. It presents a conceptual framework that schematically maps out the linkages between (a) patterns of (unsustainable) social metabolism, (b) the emergence of ecological distribution conflicts, (c) the rise of environmental justice movements, and (d) their potential contributions for sustainability transitions. The ways how these four processes can influence each other are multi-faceted and often not a foretold story. Yet, ecological distribution conflicts can have an important role for sustainability, because they relentlessly bring to light conflicting values over the environment as well as unsustainable resource uses affecting people and the planet. Environmental justice movements, born out of such conflicts, become key actors in politicizing such unsustainable resource uses, but moreover, they take sometimes also radical actions to stop them. By drawing on creative forms of mobilizations and diverse repertoires of action to effectively reduce unsustainabilities, they can turn from 'victims' of environmental injustices into 'warriors' for sustainability. But when will improvements in sustainability be lasting? By looking at the overall dynamics between the four processes, we aim to foster a more systematic understanding of the dynamics and roles of ecological distribution conflicts within sustainability processes.

El presente ensayo se referirá al tema de la Revolución de las Trece Colonias. Este acontecimiento ha sido estudiado por diversos historiadores como Alexis Tocqueville, y es considerado dentro los acontecimientos más importantes porque además de ser un proceso revolucionario y de descolonización del imperio más fuerte en esa época, fue un ejemplo que inspiraría a la Revolución Francesa.

In this article we will review the anthropological work of the Prussian philosopher Immanuel Kant, in its relationship with the scientific instrumentalization by imperial policies of the time, and from the point of view of the Latin American postcolonial (decolonial) perspective. Our goal is to explore Kant’s idea of ‘race’ in his courses on anthropology and physical geography, which allows us to broaden our understanding of the scope that this kind of philosophical racism had in the European view of the ‘savage’ (in America, Asia and Africa) and of the hermeneutical implications that the concept of ‘race’had in the philosophy of history.

Taking Jennifer Egan’s novel Look at Me (2001) as an exemplary case study, this article explores what it means for contemporary writers to “begin with postmodernism” in responding to post-60s US culture and society. The argument brings together two recent developments in literary culture: the historicist and revisionist turn taken by scholarship on literary postmodernism, and the direct engagement by younger US fiction writers with the historical genealogy of the postmodern era.

La presente Tesis de Magister desarrolla un análisis etnohistórico de la región de Tarapacá durante el siglo XV y XVI (ca. 1400-1572), desde una perspectiva que articula e integra los aportes de la arqueología y la historia regional. A lo largo del escrito se recopilan, ordenan y analizan comparativamente datos y estudios relativos a poblaciones, asentamientos y autoridades indígenas durante este lapso cronológico.
El propósito central de esta Tesis es evaluar dos hipótesis relativas a las transformaciones sociopolíticas en la red de localidades que componen la región de estudio; primero como consecuencia de la incorporación de Tarapaca al Tawantinsuyo, y, luego producto de la implantación del sistema hispano de encomiendas en el marco de una frágil e incipiente organización del estado colonial en el Virreinato del Perú.
La primera hipótesis de trabajo se propone documentar los efectos de una política de urbanismo regional por parte del Estado Inca en la quebrada de Tarapacá y otros puntos detectados -sobre la base de inversiones en infraestructura vial y manipulación de las estructuras políticas y religiosas locales-, para estimar la conformación de una jurisdicción indígena, reconocido en ciertas fuentes tempranas (ca. 1563) como la provincia o “… la nación de los de Tarapaca”. La segunda, somete a escrutinio la tesis de una Historia Temprana de la provincia Tarapaca, previa a 1572 o “pre toledana”, en la cual el desenvolvimiento de encomenderos, visitadores y agentes eclesiásticos ocurre y se adecúa  tácticamente a las condiciones sociales existentes, utilizando la infraestructura y esquema jurisdiccional legado por la administración cuzqueña y el patrón de asentamiento indígena vigente desde el siglo XIII en la región.
Esta Tesis es un primer paso en la integración y análisis de un magnífico y variado cuerpo de antecedentes arqueológicos y documentales respecto de la historia indígena y colonial de la actual región de Tarapacá. Para abolir aquellas consideraciones siempre adversas sobre la escases de fuentes o las dificultades del trabajo inter disciplinario en esta materia, esperamos que esta Tesis ilumine el camino hacia una prospección conjunta y sistemática de archivos en búsqueda de documentos inéditos, incluyendo aquellos publicados de modo fragmentario, e incentive el desarrollo de nuevos estudios en el campo de la arqueología histórica.

The current inadequate drinking water services and sanitation problems have incited the need for a better management strategy by the country's water and sanitation organizations. In this study, a logical review of the water supply and sanitation origin and management structures was done to suggest a plausible management option in Nigeria. The paper also revealed that the overall management practices of these organizations at the three tiers of governments (federal, states and local) is very poor and uncoordinated which have resulted in low level of water and sanitation coverage. Thus, in order to ameliorate these problems, the study recommends sector wide reforms with the aim of radical improvement in the management processes of these organizations. Other
proposed improvement strategies include: private sector participation, effective and reasonable tariff regime for effective cost recovery, increment in political support and leadership commitment, introduction of benchmarking amongst the utilities to encourage healthy competition, strengthening of the legislative and institutional framework- that will enhance the autonomy of these organizations, improvement in the issues of accountability, transparency and stakeholders involvement in the activities of these organizations. It is hoped that the adoption and implementation of these strategies will lead to attainment of improved and sustainable water supply and sanitation coverage that will meet current and future demands.

Freudian readings of literary texts have so far proved rather fruitful thanks to their applicability
to other fields of discourse. Freud’s theories and concepts like the Oedipus and Electra
complexes, id-ego-superego, death drive, penis envy and the uncanny have been frequently
studied in literary analysis since the birth of the theories themselves. The uncanny, in
particular, refers to the arousal of some familiar feeling by an unfamiliar image which leaves
the person unable to differentiate between reality and fantasy.Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black
Cat” and Yusuf Atılgan’s The Motherland Hotel offer similar veins for a psychoanalytic
analysis of their protagonists considering Freud’s theory of the uncanny. The protagonists of
both works suffer from severe psychological issues due to their problematic oedipal phases,
concealed homosexual tendencies as well as predispositions towards violence, which culminate
in their extreme social behavioural disorders. All these psychological determinants surface up
and begin to haunt these characters with the appearance of the black cats in both works. The
image of the black cat as an unfamiliar external factor connecting itself with suppressed
familiar feelings is reminiscent of what Freud calls the uncanny. In this respect, this paper aims
to comparatively analyze the images of the black cat in the above works on the basis of Freud’s

Resumen.

El presente trabajo intenta, a partir de la revisión de las obras fundamentales de Jean Baudrillard, dar cuenta del origen de la personalidad narcisista, que no conoce límites entre ella misma y el mundo que exige la gratificación inmediata de sus deseos, así como la erosión de la vida íntima tenida lugar en la sociedad del espectáculo. El American way of life aparecerá caracterizado como el imperio de la seducción y de la obsolescencia decretada; un sistema que rinde culto al fetiche de la mercancía y la pornografía de la información. Finalmente, se buscará dar cuenta de cómo el consumo no es, en absoluto, la base sobre la que descansa el progreso, sino más bien la barrera que lo estanca o, al menos, lo lanza en la dirección contraria a la de la mejora de las relaciones sociales.
