A Rose for Emily

This paper argues that Emily Grierson has not been presented as a murderer, rather as a victim in William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily". As the plot unravels, we come to realize that she has been first oppressed by her father and then by the town and its people. The events of the story have been arranged in such a way that the reader feels sympathetic towards the protagonist despite the revelation of her being a murderer.

In the short stories “Barn Burning” and “A Rose for Emily,” Faulkner shows how people with two completely different lives, could share the same kind of problems and both people try and solve their problems in the same way. When these people have bad things happen to them, their defense mechanism kicks in, and the only way to defend themselves is to create their own world. By doing this, they lose their connection to this society and their values. Both Abner Snopes, a rebellious sharecropper, and Emily Grierson, an unmarried woman from a prominent family, are isolated from their respective communities, and both find themselves in a kind of societal limbo. Once in that limbo, they no longer feel the need to adhere to the values of their society and, as a result, are free to violate both traditional and moral rules.

etc. This dried flowers are also used in industry. For rose embedded drying technique is best in which flower shape, colour, size
are maintained and for gerbera press drying and microwave drying techniques are best in which shape, size, colour are
maintained.

Gerald O’ Hara’s butler Pork was won in “all night poker game.” Blacks were seen as property to be bought and sold, to be bet upon and exchanged like material goods. Gerald was soft-hearted and after repeated pleas, he bought his wife Dilcey and his daughter Prissy, from the Wilkes’ estate for three thousand dollars. This is the only time that price of the blacks is mentioned. This kindness shown by Gerald was used by the writer to portray how the white’s were large hearted and treated them correctly. The money spent by Gerald though didn’t cause a hole in his pocket but still led him to say “Never again will I let a darky on this place marry off.” Pork and Dilcey’s marriage was a very romanticised view offered by the author as most blacks were forced to “breed” with each other and were usually separated after wards. Slave owners often dictated the sexual activity of the blacks.

The story begins at the funeral of Miss Emily. She is from an aristocratic family and the town had a huge interest on her as the house in which she lived in was the only one the town that can attract an eye and people were unable to notice what happen inside for many years. The town

Southern Gothic is a genre that was inspired by the European Gothic style. It emerged in the beginning of 20 th century. This genre focuses on the evil, grotesque and decay. Characters are generally antisocial and marginalised like Miss Emily in the book. This genre is also a way to fantasize on events and people we don't know have enough information about them. The reader can also find secret passages, haunted or strange houses, decayed people in this genre. Besides these aspects, psychological and sociological analysis can be found in the Gothic literature. Gothic works may include illusions, strange characters and their twisted psyches. The Gothic genre is also nourished by the ancient oral tradition and its various stories. Symbols are the most essential aspect in this genre. Everything in the story can be a symbol. Symbols, motifs and narration in A Rose for Emily used by William Faulkner is going to be examined in this paper. The narration of our story differs from the other works written in the same era with our book. It is first person narration but plural which means the narrator is collective rather than individual. It is not a single subjective voice; it is collective and objective voice. Objective for the town except Miss Emily. Critics and the reader are not sure who the narrator is because it does not mention its name, its occupation or its relationship with Miss Emily. It just hides behind the collectivity of the town. The narrator is like a story teller for the next generation of the town. The narrator knows everything about the story of Miss Emily but narrates the story indirectly. Foreshadowing is important for this story. The narrator uses foreshadowing to prepare the reader for the perplexing reveal at the end of the story. The reader can see this foreshadowing when Emily buys arsenic and when she refuses to accept anyone's death. When some people visit her for the taxes she must pay, she asks those people to visit Colonel Sartoris but General Sartoris has been dead almost ten years. She repeats some aspects again and again like a parrot.

This term paper aims to study the mystery and plot in "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. In the pursuit of exploring mystery and plot in this unique short story, I will elaborate the story, plot and mysterious events that will make us know more about this extra ordinary work of art. The story is divided into five sections. In first section, the narrator recalls the time of Emily Grierson’s death and how the entire town attended her funeral in her home, which no stranger had entered for more than ten years. In second section, the narrator describes a time thirty years earlier when Emily resists another official inquiry on behalf of the town leaders, when the townspeople detect a powerful odor emanating from her property. In third section, the narrator describes a long illness that Emily suffers after this incident. In fifth section, the narrator describes what happens after Emily dies. Where we see non-chronological pattern of plot driving the reader to a very unique and mysterious journey into life of Emily. About which this research will focus on.

Sodium silicate was dissolved in water in either a monomer form or polymer form; the effects of both forms of sodium silicate aqueous solution on rose powdery mildew and root rot diseases of miniature rose were examined. Both forms of sodium silicate aqueous solution were applied to the roots of the miniature rose. Potassium silicate aqueous solution was used as a control and was compared to the effect of sodium silicate aqueous solution. The polymer sodium silicate aqueous solution was the most effective treatment against both powdery mildew and root rot diseases. Moreover, no inhibition effects of silicate solutions were observed in vitro on Pythium helicoides, the causal pathogen of rose root rot disease. The silicon contents in the roots of the miniature rose treated with polymer sodium silicate were significantly greater than that in plants treated with monomer sodium silicate. In conclusion, the suppressive effects of sodium silicate in the polymer form were confirmed against powdery mildew and root rot diseases of the miniature rose.
