Design

The paper discusses an FPGA-based prototyping system with both wired and wireless programming and data exchange facilities. The system can be efficiently used for different types of portable devices. For example, it can supply additional interfaces to mobile computers; can be seen as a hardware accelerator for solving computationally complex problems or serve as a base for portable embedded applications. The system includes an extendable core prototyping board, development tools and supplementary software. The board is designed in such a way that it provides direct support for reconfiguration and self-reconfiguration. It can also be employed for virtual prototyping systems that require more resources that the capacity of the onboard FPGA. The supplementary software includes all necessary drivers and interfaces to interact with the board. The development tools are targeted to design space exploration and they consist of hardware description language libraries, design templates, IP cores, software models and multimedia applications. The latter are mainly used for different types of experiments and for hardware/software partitioning.

A study was carried out using four measures of effectiveness to compare product warnings that are consistent with the American National Standards Institute Product Safety Signs and Labels standard (ANSI Z535.4) to warnings that are not consistent with the standard. Inconsistent warnings were based on the format of existing product warnings. Two warnings, consistent and inconsistent, for each of ten different products were evaluated: cooking oil, trampoline, paint, dresser, airbag, seat belt, tire, sports utility vehicle, reclining seat and swimming pool. The four effectiveness criteria were judgments of noticeability, likelihood to read, understandability and likelihood of complying. Participants were 176 students with varied majors from five different universities. Results indicated higher levels of judged effectiveness for the warnings that were consistent with the ANSI standard. This paper provides insights into the interdisciplinary intersections between marketing and design. It explores the various design intersections in the marketing fields. The collaboration between marketing and design is restricted by the paradigm boundaries, but not by the industry, researchers, and research projects. Challenges for both disciplines' future are explored, highlighting the need for a paradigm shift in marketing.

El presente trabajo da cuenta de una reflexión realizada a partir de los programas vigentes de Historia de la Arquitectura I, II y III de una cátedra de Historia de la Arquitectura de la Facultad de Arquitectura, Planeamiento y Diseño de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario. This paper shows how three new concepts -'Design Cases' (introduced in prEN 1990), the 'Geotechnical Design Model' (prEN 1997-1), and the 'Ground Model' (prEN 1997-2)are combined (in prEN 1997-3) to provide a comprehensive and flexible set of tools for the design of specific geotechnical structures. The paper presents flow charts divided between: a) reliability management, b) ground modelling, c) verification of the design, and d) structure execution, which provide guidelines for navigating prEN 1990 and prEN 1997. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article montre comment trois nouveaux concepts -"Cas de conception" (introduits dans le prEN 1990),"Modèle de conception géotechnique" (prEN 1997-1) et "Modèle de terrain" (prEN 1997-2) -sont combinés (dans le prEN 1997-3) pour fournir un ensemble complet et flexible d'outils pour la conception de structures géotechniques particulières. Le document présente des organigrammes relatifs: a) a la gestion de la fiabilité, b) a la modélisation du terrain, c) a la vérification de la conception, et d) a l'exécution de la structure.

Le chassage est une opération qui semble simple et maîtrisée de longue date dans tous les ateliers de production. A y regarder de plus près, il s'avère que cette opération n'est pas si aisée lorsqu'on la réalise à l'échelle horlogère (≤ 1mm). De nombreux chassages, pourtant réalisés en respectant les normes établies, s'avèrent ne pas tenir les forces de déchassage souhaitées. Nos analyses expérimentales sur des chassages traversants mettent en évidence des particularités propres aux petites dimensions, notamment le fait que la force maximale atteinte pendant le chassage n'est pas représentative de la force de tenue de l'assemblage.

The design of large-scale solar power systems (photovoltaic or thermal) of different kinds is increasing and the shading effect of neighboring collectors becomes critical for the optimal design of such systems. The shading of collectors by their neighbors is likely to occur during some period of the day, especially near sunrise and sunset. It is desired that any shadow be minimized throughout the day. The shading effect depends on the spacing between collectors, the row length, their height, the tilt angle, the latitude, the type of collectors and the time of year. The work reported here presents a generic mathematical framework which is used for the analysis of the shadow effect of large solar power systems. A new measure, the shadow efficiency, is defined and determined as a function of a number of important parameters affecting the shading effect. The shading effect of collectors for the three possible collectors' orientations, fixed tilt, half-tracking and full-tracking, is discussed. Using the shadow efficiency as a measure of performance, a new way to determine acceptable distances between collectors is outlined. A number of simulation studies are reported and discussed.

In this paper, we present PoCM 2 (Point-of-Care Mobility Monitoring), a generic and extensible at-home mobility evaluation and monitoring system. PoCM 2 uses both 3D visual sensors (such as Microsoft Kinect) and mobile sensors (i.e., internal and external sensors embedded with/connected to a mobile device such as a smartphone) for complementary data acquisition, as well as a series of analytics that allow evaluation of both archived and real-time mobility data. We demonstrate the performance of PoCM 2 with a specific application developed for freeze detection and quantification from Parkinson's Disease mobility data, as an approach to estimate the medication level of the PD patients and potentially recommend adjustments.

Present paper study aerofoil with NACA2412 with Fowler and Single Slotted flaps that were used for the purpose of numerical investigation the effect of energy adder on the trace of wake behind the proposed wing at a Reynolds number of (2x105) with multi-element flap geometry having different gap, overlap distances, and different flap deflection angle (α). This all were inspected with various angle of attack (AOA) for both types of flaps. In recent years many systems for distance learning have been developed. Even though students have access to learning material any time and any place, current tools for e-learning still have their limitations. The main shortcoming, compared to real life learning is the limited opportunity for interaction between student, teacher and material. This lack of multimodal communication limits one's sense of being a member of an academic community. Virtual communities offer a challenging opportunity to solve this shortcoming. In this paper we report about a virtual community for e-learning using serious gaming technology. This virtual community is the first step to a virtual University, a virtual community for academic learning. The virtual community will be populated by agents representing students, teachers and campus employees. These agents are autonomous or controlled by the user. We focus on multimodal communication between agents realized by game technology. And interaction between agents and the virtual world realized by waypoints in the simulated world. The design and implementation of the communication model will be presented and the first test results of a user experiment.

Acquisition of military hardware typically proceeds from design, development, production, and finally to operational use and support. Prior to the full-rate production, both developmental and operational test and evaluation (DT&E, OT&E) must occur to ensure that the system meets military requirements. The United States Air Force (USAF) is continually looking for ways to improve its test and evaluation techniques. Since 1997, Air Combat Command (ACC) has been successfully using Design of Experiments (DOE) to construct and analyze operational test efforts. This article presents our work on the development of a fuel cell (FC) and battery hybrid (FC-Bh) system for use in portable microelectronic systems. We describe the design and control of the hybrid system, as well as a dynamic power management (DPM)-based energy management policy that extends its operational lifetime. The FC is of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) type, operates at room temperature, and has an energy density which is 4--6 times that of a Li-ion battery. The FC cannot respond to sudden changes in the load, and so a system powered solely by the FC is not economical. An FC-Bh power source, on the other hand, can provide the high energy density of the FC and the high power density of a battery. Nous défendons dans cet article le point de vue selon lequel lors de l'hybridation des enseignements, l'usage de l'analytique des apprentissages numériques non seulement apportent des bénéfices, mais constitue une réelle opportunité à saisir et à intégrer dès la conception des enseignements. Ce point de vue est adopté dans la construction d'un dispositif de formation sur les learning analytics dans le cadre du projet HyPE-13 (HYbrider et Partager les Enseignements) porté par un consortium de 12 universités françaises. L'article présente le dispositif ainsi qu'un modèle d'ingénierie pédagogique combinant hybridation et analytique d'apprentissage. As one of the engineering test programs in ITER, the test blanket program, which utilizes ITER as a test bed to develop breeding blanket systems for fusion DEMO plants, has been planned and advanced. The Test Blanket Working Group (TBWG) has been organized to review and coordinate test programs on Test Blanket Modules (TBM). Five breeding blanket concepts have been proposed and discussed in the TBWG, and Japan is participating in the development of all of these concepts. This paper describes the status of TBM design, blanket technology and materials development for ITER TBMs. The current design and R&D status of candidate TBM concepts, which include 1) a water-cooling system with a solid breeder, 2) a helium gas-cooling system with a solid breeder, 3) a lithium -lead (LiPb) breeding system, 4) a liquid lithium breeding system, and 5) a molten salt breeding system, are presented and discussed.

Technical projects environments, i.e., sets of methods and tools that support an engineering project, are software-intensive systems that need to be configured according to software process and project characteristics. Tailored software processes, e.g., based on the V Modell XT framework, specify project process steps and drive method and tool selection with a focus on individual feature requirements. Therefore, feature models can support the automated selection and configuration of methods and tools. For designing an effective and efficient engineering project environment, project managers and engineering domain experts can semantically integrate a given set of engineering tools and project data models in a flexible way. In this paper, we analyze challenges of managing engineering tool variability in context of engineering project environment configurations and present a conceptual approach using semantic modeling of project requirements and tool capabilities.

Transport is a complex system, integral to national and international structure and without which society cannot function. At the same time, transport is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. In the UK a step change is required in the transport sector to achieve the legally binding reduction targets of the Climate Change Act 2008. Following the UK government’s 2013 review of carbon dioxide emissions from infrastructure, this paper looks at the country’s present and projected transport emissions in the context of the transport status quo and plans for growth. It argues there is an urgent need to rebalance the transport modal mix, with all modes integrated into a seamless transport system with smart interfacing between them. Drivers for behavioural change are also essential.

Participation in the web of communities requires a common language, a common technological structure and development of content that is relevant and captivating. This paper reports on a project that both conserves a rich regional cultural heritage and has structured the content developed during this conservation to be fluidly shared with both the domain and the broader communities. It also examines the varied degrees of acceptance within these communities.

Increased understanding of the interrelations between overall wellbeing and learning calls for a holistic and multidisciplinary learning environment (LE) design. Considering learners' perception in the design of LE supportive to learning and wellbeing is expected to positively influence (a) the design quality, (b) participatory organizational culture, and (c) learning. The nature of this process creates contradictions and difficulties, however. Stand-alone co-design efforts may convert into pseudo-consultation without actual effects; neither is it easy to consider various stakeholders' perceptions in a balanced manner. And if not planned carefully, instead of experiencing learning benefits, participation may also be considered to be an additional burden. This paper examines how these kinds of challenges were intended to be circumvented, or avoided, in a case involving Finnish upper secondary school students in the redesign of learning spaces so as to better support their learning and wellbeing. In this project, design activities were embedded in the cross-curricular visual art project course involving 11 students, which culminated in an exhibition, during which a more representative number of students (n = 175) expressed their views in a written format. After other stakeholders, such as teachers, had expressed their views, students were given another opportunity to evaluate whether their ideas were considered in the design. In addition to evaluating the procedures employed in this project, this paper will discuss their possible transfer to other contexts. Based on the overall evaluation of the procedures, it will also propose some procedural design principles for involving learners in the LE design. Involving students in the LE design is expected to (a) increase the quality of the design, (b) improve participatory organizational culture, and (c) lead to a positive impact on learning, and by so doing, also improve students' overall wellbeing.

This paper deals with the development of a threedimensional numerical model to predict the overall performance of an advanced high temperature heat exchanger (HTHX) design, up to 1000 o C, for the production of hydrogen by the sulfur iodine thermo-chemical cycle used in advanced nuclear reactor concepts. The design is an offset strip-fin, hybrid plate compact heat exchanger made from a liquid silicon impregnated carbon composite material. The two working fluids are helium gas and liquid salt (FLINAK). The offset strip-fin is chosen as a method of heat transfer enhancement because of its ability to induce periodic boundary layer restart mechanism between the fins that has a direct effect on heat transfer enhancement. The effects of the fin geometry on the flow field and heat transfer are studied in three-dimensions using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques, and the results are then compared with the results from the analytical calculations. The pre-processor GAMBIT is used to create a computational mesh, and the CFD software package FLUENT that is based on the finite volume method is used to produce the numerical results. Fin dimensions need to be chosen that optimize heat transfer and minimize pressure drop. Comparisons of the overall performance between the rectangular and curved fin geometry were performed using computational fluid dynamics techniques. The model developed in this paper will be used to investigate the heat exchanger design parameters in order to find an optimal design. Modern industrial societies mostly respond to the threat of climate breakdown with denial and neglect. In this paper, I argue that one of the causes of this is a superficial view of nature, including a shallow conception of natural beauty, and propose a deep aesthetic appreciation consisting of embodied participation, multisensorial perception, naturalist knowledge, and admiration without dominion. This appreciation focuses on following animal stories within the environment, an approach that will reveal how nature is not merely scenery but a network of interrelated stories that weaves the web of life and can be seriously damaged by climate chaos.

Microscopic simulation tools have been gaining popularity among the traffic engineers. Enhanced inputoutput capabilities of these simulation tools allow engineers model and simulate complex transportation networks, and gather results relatively fast. However, extensive validation/calibration efforts are required to verify the credibility of the results of these simulation models. This paper deals with the development of credible and valid simulation models of two unconventional traffic circles in New Jersey, namely the Collingwood and Brooklawn circles. These two circles are modeled in PARAMICS simulation software. The model development and validation / calibration steps are presented in detail. PARAMICS is one of the few off-the-shelf simulation software packages that can model unconventional traffic circles. However, it is shown here that the default capabilities of PARAMICS are not sufficient to model statistically valid simulation models of these two unconventional circles. It is also shown that the use of Application Programming Interface (API) feature of PARAMICS is required to develop realistic models that can accurately represent drivers' facility specific behaviors. A gap acceptance/rejection binary probit model based on the analysis of field data is developed and implemented using PARAMICS API. The differences between the simulation results of the API enhanced model and the default PARAMICS model are presented to demonstrate the importance of extending the existing default models and the careful validation/calibration using real-world data Finally, the sensitivity analyses of the developed simulation models are presented.

In a large-scale power electronic system like a wind farm, the mutual interactions between the power converter controllers and passive components may lead to instability problems or undesired dynamic response. This paper presents an optimum parameter design procedure for the power converter controllers in a power electronic system in order to guarantee a stable operation and to guarantee an acceptable dynamic response. In the approach, first, all oscillatory modes are calculated by a Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) transfer function matrix of the power system; then, a multi-objective optimization procedure based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented to place the modes in the desired locations in order to increase the stability margin and to improve the dynamic response. Time-domain simulations of a 400-MW wind farm in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment confirms the effectiveness of the presented design approach.

Glazing research is receiving increased attention around the world, thanks to cooperation among industrialized nations in the research and development of new glazing materials and systems that can contribute to a reduction of the excessive dependence on non-renewable energy sources. The International Energy Agency (lEA) is a major vehicl e for canying out collaborative R&D on a global basis. The lEA was formed in 1974 with 23 member countries to develop a coordinated approach to the utilization of energy resources. This involves collaboration in the research, development, and demonstration of new energy technologies. The lEA Solar Heating and Coo ling Program was initiated in 1977 and a total of nineteen projects or tasks have been undertaken . The U.S., primarily through work at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), is one of 15 on application and technology transfer issues. The emphasis is on near-te rm or emerging market applications. Task 18 also intends to increase general awareness of advanced glazings, plus aid industry, universities , and standards organizations in the proper measurement, application, energy benefit, and use of these advanced materials on an international level. A 2.14M length overall (LOA) flat bottom canoe (punt), was designed and constructed using locally available materials. The features of the canoe are least cost material, light weight, shallow draft and easy maneuverability. The canoe's light displacement (weight empty) was 28kg, which was less.than local canoe of same size. When placed on water a draft of 5.5cm was achieved which is 14.8% of its depth (37cm). The capacity of the canoe was 200kg, and the total production cost of N8, 700.00 which was, not beyond, the reach of an average fisher folks, or any fish farmer. The canoe was easily maneuvered when propelled by paddling as it floated at a shallow draft; this makes the canoe adequate for use on shallow water bodies such as ponds and reservoirs. CFD based modelling including diffusion and reaction within a meshed porous solid to represent a heterogeneous catalyst has seen a rapid growth in interest over the last decade. Early attempts to do this essentially represented the reaction simply as a heat source terms [1]. Developments in commercial and open source CFD sub-models and methods allowed meshing of the porous solid and the development of functions to model species diffusion and reaction within the porous phase. This approach, sometimes referred to as “hi-fidelity” reactor modelling, is now being widely published [2][3][4][5]. There remains though a shortage of rigorous model validation and verification. A significant number of published validations apply only a single “global” result to the validation (e.g. temperature, reaction conversion etc.) [6] which does not address the validity of the complex substructure of the overall model [7].

We study structural symmetries of two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals with anisotropic unit cells, including square- and rectangular-lattices with orientationally modulated elliptic motifs, and a compound structure consisting of circles with sixfold rotational symmetry and elliptical lines with twofold symmetry, which are created through elastic deformation of a single elastomeric membrane with circular pores. We then investigate the photonic bandgap (PBG) properties of the corresponding 2D Si posts and their tolerance to the structural deviation. We find that in the compound structure the overall PBGs are dominated by the sublattice with a higher symmetry, while the total symmetry is determined by the one with a lower symmetry.

The problem of optimally distributing new products is common to many companies and industries. This thesis describes how this challenge was addressed at Zara, a leading retailer in the "fast fashion" industry. The thesis discusses the development and evaluation of a modular system including distributional demand forecasting and dynamic programming distribution optimization. .

Finnish youth are found to be, despite their broad knowledge, uninterested in politics and in societal participation. As a remedy, international studies suggest enabling democratic experiences in schools. This article discusses an action research project aimed at developing deliberation-based democratic practice in an elementary classroom. Results suggest that the formal deliberative-democratic practice opens up a way for pupils to productively express themselves, challenge the prevailing structures, make sense of social reality and, thus, practise skills and motivations needed in democratic citizenship. However, the teacher is argued to be in constant struggle between deliberative-democratic stance and control orientation. This tension exists in the teacher's actions and thinking and in his reflections about the contrast between the classroom practice and the overall school ethos. Therefore, this article suggests using the understanding of this tension in scrutinizing projects aiming at pupil participation and involvement.

This paper 1 will examine the role of semiotics in teaching design and guiding design projects. Specifically, we will consider the contribution of semiotics as an important discipline for all the aspects of analysis in design and project organization. The focus will be on reception of meaning (analysis of tangible and intangible products and practices) on one hand and, on the other, the production of meaning (conception). In this regard, Michel de Certeau's work on tactics and strategies is inspiring when it comes to understanding the need for a designer to maintain a dual posture throughout design projects. In conclusion, we will consider design culture in social design, a culture that is also characterized and nourished by the contribution of semiotics when it comes to identifying the specificities and values that define this culture.

We consider a flexible structure modeled as a shear beam which is free to rotate on the horizontal plane. We first model the system by using partial differential equations and we propose boundary feedback laws to achieve set-point regulation of the rotation angle as well as to suppress elastic vibrations. The main advantage of the proposed design, which consists of a decoupling controller together with an observer, is that it is easy to implement. We utilize a coordinate transformation based on an invertible integral transformation by using Volterra form and backstepping techniques. We show that with the proposed controller, the control objectives are satisfied.

Models and simulations have become part and parcel of advanced learning environments, performance technologies and knowledge management systems.This book series will address the nature and types of models and simulations from multiple perspectives and in a variety of contexts in order to provide a foundation for their effective integration into teaching and learning. While much has been written about models and simulations, little has been written about the underlying instructional design principles and the varieties of ways for effective use of models and simulations in learning and instruction. This book series will provide a practical guide for designing and using models and simulations to support learning and to enhance performance and it will provide a comprehensive framework for conducting research on educational uses of models and simulations. A unifying thread of this series is a view of models and simulations as learning and instructional objects. Conceptual and mathematical models and their uses will be described. Examples of different types of simulations, including discrete event and continuous process simulations, will be elaborated in various contexts. A rationale and methodology for the design of interactive models and simulations will be presented, along with a variety of uses ranging from assessment tools to simulation games. The key role of models and simulations in knowledge construction and representation will be described, and a rationale and strategy for their integration into knowledge management and performance support systems will provided.

Resumo: O estudo em pauta abordou a utilização de metodologias ativas em uma turma do terceiro semestre de Engenharia Química da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), aplicada pelo Professor na disciplina de Princípios dos Processos Químicos (PPQ). Para realizá-lo, recorreu-se a duas pesquisas: de campo e bibliográfica. Esta foi executada por intermédio de consultas em diversas fontes, quais sejam: Livros, revista, artigos de internet, etc. Aquela foi desenvolvida na turma acima mencionada, por meio de uma entrevista com 20 alunos, visando coletar dados. No que tange aos objetivos vislumbrados por este trabalho, destaca-se: analisar a percepção dos discentes sobre a utilização das metodologias ativas em sua sala de aula e verificar se o professor da disciplina de PPQ está conseguindo repassar o assunto de forma adequada com o uso dessas metodologias. Os resultados deste estudo evidenciaram que as metodologias ativas contribuem grandemente para melhorar o nível de proficiência dos alunos em sua aprendizagem. Portanto, torna-se vital aos educadores aplicar a metodologia do referido artigo de forma efetiva e contínua. Metodologias ativas, Sala de Aula invertida, Estudo Híbrido. Muitas pesquisas sobre os métodos ativos mostram que os alunos conseguem assimilar melhor e com maior volume o conteúdo, retendo a informação por mais tempo e aproveitando as aulas com mais satisfação e prazer . Existem diversas formas de usar esse método em sala de aula, Bonwell e Eison apud Barbosa e Moura (2013, p. 57) destaca as seguintes:

The overwhelming success of mobile devices and wireless communications is stressing the need for the development of mobility-aware services. Device mobility requires services adapting their behavior to sudden context changes and being aware of handoffs, which introduce unpredictable delays and intermittent discontinuities. Heterogeneity of wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G) complicates the situation, since a different treatment of context-awareness and handoffs is required for each solution. This paper presents a middleware architecture designed to ease mobility-aware service development. The architecture hides technology-specific mechanisms and offers a set of facilities for context awareness and handoff management. The architecture prototype works with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which today represent two of the most widespread wireless technologies. In addition, the paper discusses motivations and design details in the challenging context of mobile multimedia streaming applications.
