This paper takes a close look at the China national standard GB50189-2005, Design Standard for Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings, which was enforced on July 1, 2005. The paper first reviews the standard, then compares the standard with ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2004 to identify discrepancies in code coverage and stringency, and recommends some energy conservation measures that can be evaluated in the design of public buildings to achieve energy savings beyond the standard. The paper also highlights several important features of 90.1-2004 that may be considered as additions to the GB50189-2005 standard during the next revision. At the end the paper summarizes the latest developments in building energy standards and rating systems in China and the US.
In room acoustics, the characteristics of a room depend greatly on its reverberation time value. RT as a single figure influences the material; specification, quantity and cost for either construction or correction in a room. Contemporary literature had shown dissatisfaction on the accuracy and reliability of RT values obtained from existing standard measurement methods. A new method is proposed; which exploited the availability of cheap huge (expandable) data storage capacity of a SLM. The new method showed improved robustness and reliability. It also, produced visible energy decay curves which was a major concern expressed in ISO BS EN 3882-2. The proposed new method used standard interrupted noise method with pink noise excitation signal to obtain sound energy decays over octave band (125Hz – 4kHz) frequency spectrum. This was tested in five (5) rooms of different description. A total of 144,360 data points were obtained from the repeated measurements over twelve positions in each room sample, as specified in ISO 354:2003. Parameter was used to extrapolate from resultant energy decay curve. Furthermore, the proposed new method showed significant reduction in standard variations at mid and high frequencies. The outcome of this research has suggested an alternative and a more robust method of measuring reverberation time using a capable SLM. This will consolidate accuracy and improve reliability of RT values measured in ordinary rooms.

The solute load of the Kaveri River (South India) and its tributaries draining diverse Precambrian terrains during pre-monsoon and monsoon periods was determined. Using average annual flow, total drainage area and atmospheric input corrected major ion concentrations of these rivers chemical weathering rates, annual fluxes of different ionic species to the ocean and CO 2 consumption rates were estimated.
This guide reports data on the thermal properties of concrete and masonry constituents, masonry units, and systems of materials and products that form building components. This guide includes consideration of thermal mass of concrete and masonry, passive solar design, and procedures to limit condensation within assemblages.

We studied the influence of frequency on sound localization in free-flying barn owls by quantifying aspects of their target-approaching behavior to a distant sound source during ongoing auditory stimulation. In the baseline condition with a stimulus covering most of the owls hearing range (1-10 kHz), all owls landed within a radius of 20 cm from the loudspeaker in more than 80% of the cases and localization along the azimuth was more accurate than localization in elevation. When the stimulus contained only high frequencies ([5 kHz) no changes in striking behavior were observed. But when only frequencies from 1 to 5 kHz were presented, localization accuracy and precision decreased. In a second step we tested whether a further border exists at 2.5 kHz as suggested by optimality models. When we compared striking behavior for a stimulus having energy from 2.5 to 5 kHz with a stimulus having energy between 1 and 2.5 kHz, no consistent differences in striking behavior were observed. It was further found that pretakeoff latency was longer for the latter stimulus than for baseline and that center frequency was a better predictor for landing precision than stimulus bandwidth. These data fit well with what is known from head-turning studies and from neurophysiology.

This study was carried out to determine the performance of different shapes of greenhouses having equal floor area as well as the central height. A numerical analysis has been carried out using Matlab and Borland C++ corresponding to the climatic conditions of five different climatic zones of India, represented by New Delhi (28.50 latitude), Kolkata (22.50 latitude), Jodhpur (26.30 latitude),
This report summarises the work performed in Switzerland within the frame of the Joule II project "Indoor Air Quality Audit". Eight office buildings located in three important areas were audited.
