Online Learning Platforms as New Centers: UONEDU Case Study

In the era of digitalization and technological advancement, technology has become an integral part of our life. Technology is a major factor in shaping the new global economy and producing rapid changes in society. In the past decade, new technology has fundamentally changed the way people communicate and work. In the field of education teachers are using new technology for making teaching-learning process; easy and interesting. A competent teacher should have several skills and techniques for providing successful teaching. And to develop and increase the skills and competencies of teacher knowledge of newer technology is required. In modern technologically advanced societies, education requires a teacher to be synced with latest technologies. In this regard, attitude of teachers towards use of technology is quite a serious issue. Now the very important part of digitalization is technology. Almost all of our daily activities are performed with the help of technologies. Technological education is considered to be an essential ingredient of education. But some of us hold an unknown fear for using new technologies. Even traditional traditionalists have not adapted to the use of technologies. Teacher is an important factor in determining his progress and also his/her students with the help of new techniques. The aim of the research is to study digital education and its various components which make learning process highly interesting and permanent. It also tries to explore its advantages, scope and challenges in the digital education. This study highlights the necessity for developing positive attitude towards the digital education among the teachers so that they can keep themselves abreast of the latest technologies and adopt it later their teaching careers.

Critical Studies in Education

All over the world, education is undergoing substantial changes in the wake of rapid technological developments. As our world is becoming ever more digitized, the educational sector is increasingly infused with digital games, apps, websites, social media, and learning environments. The Covid-19 pandemic, and associated measures of social distancing and school closures all over the world, have accelerated this digitization, triggering an urgent need for critical, up-close scrutiny of how this digitization is reshaping the worlds of education. The focus of this Special Issue is especially on digital education platforms. Over the last years, such platforms have become progressively prevalent, and both global and local technology companies have become omnipresent providers of such platforms, in private as well as in in public education (Van Dijck et al., 2018). From platforms tailored to primary and secondary schools to platforms specifically constructed for the field of higher education; from digital environments designed to manage pupils' learning to environments focused on the monitoring of their behavior; and from digital spaces bundling a variety of functionalities to interfaces with a more singular function: no matter the focus, there seems to exist a corresponding digital platform used within (and often especially made for) the educational field (Hillman et al., 2020; Robertson, 2019; Williamson, 2019). Furthermore, the worldwide growth and ubiquity of digital education platforms has greatly accelerated since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated newly emerging 'emergency pedagogies' that needed to be devised, often with help of both existing and newly developed digital education platforms (Williamson et al., 2020). In that sense, and in line with related scholarship on how education is taking-and changing-dedicated shapes, we advance the general thesis here that, under the influence of digital platforms, educational practices are gradually changing form (e.g., Decuypere & Vanden Broeck, 2020; Lewis, 2020b). Aim. The necessary renewal of teaching methods and school practices must take into consideration the technologies of the new generations of students, for whom the supremacy of the book and of the alphabetic writing is no longer given for certain. The presence of digital natives paves the way for educators to increase the digital awareness of young people, primarily through the definition of the terms of a new digital literacy. The reflection on the experiences of applying Web 2.0 tools to the educational context highlights the growing importance of participatory culture and informal learning. Methods. An important role is played by an updated use of constructivist and connectivist pedagogical perspectives. Training courses are considered for the person of the e-learning tutor. Among the specific objectives we have the diffusion of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), the deepening of Web 2.0 environments, the introduction of cooperative work and constructivist management methods of online interaction, the use of moderation techniques in e-learning environment. These objectives refer to the context of teaching, staff training and school organisation. Results. The collected results are processed using computerised statistical and text analysis systems, which highlight the most central themes and the most evident correlations between the emerging evidence. People who follow training courses of this type show greater awareness of the use and usefulness of technologies. They acquire awareness of the challenges posed by the growth of the young generation of digital natives, in terms of activating a new digital literacy. Conclusions. The research also highlights the difficulties and disappointments encountered in dealing with users and with the school authority. Attending training courses of this type significantly underlines the existence of two distinct fundamental methods of approaching the introduction of new media: one of technologising type, in which technologies are seen indicatively as an end, and one of culturalising type, in which technologies are seen as a means.
