Paratext between Time and Space in Digital Media
2016, in The Politics of Ephemeral Digital Media, Routledge
Abstract
This paper proposes to review the current concept of paratext, taking into account how the techno-cultural peculiarities of digital media force us to consider new aspects of textuality, particularly the relationship between space and time. Three factors of change are examined: the opposition between deep structure and surface structure; the modularity of digital texts; the mobile/locative paradigm. The relationship between ephemerality and resilience is also briefly considered, as it is closely connected to the logical organization of contemporary textuality in digital media.

What role does digital media play in redefining textuality?
The study finds that digital media dissolves traditional boundaries between text and paratext, creating an interactive textual landscape where elements constantly interact, particularly in hypertexts and videogames.
How does the concept of paratext evolve in digital contexts?
The research revealed that in digital media, paratextual elements become deeply integrated and often indistinguishable from the main text, as seen in e-books where comments and metadata shape user experiences.
What is the impact of mobile communication on the perception of texts?
The analysis indicates that mobile devices transform locations into texts, leading to unique user-generated experiences informed by geolocation and context-aware technologies, marking a shift towards interactive urban narratives.
How does 'short time' relate to 'short form' in digital media?
The chapter illustrates that 'short time' facilitates 'short form' content creation, which accelerates information consumption and production, evidenced by the rise in remix culture and fragmented textual narratives.
What is the significance of deep versus surface structures in digital texts?
The examination demonstrates that deep structures, consisting of underlying algorithms and metadata, govern how digital texts operate, contrasting significantly with surface structures that are visible to users, as shown in web design.
