La tesi analizza la rappresentazione mediatica del femminicidio di Carignano, avvenuto nel novembre 2020, attraverso una prospettiva femminista e semiotica. L'obiettivo è esaminare come la stampa italiana, nonostante le diverse orientazioni politiche, contribuisca a rafforzare stereotipi di genere e a perpetuare narrazioni problematiche sulla violenza maschile contro le donne. Attraverso l'analisi di articoli di quattro testate italiane (La Repubblica, La Stampa, Corriere della Sera e Il Giornale), la ricerca chiarisce la definizione di femminicidio secondo Marcela Lagarde, evidenziando la sua natura strutturale e socioculturale. In primo luogo si sottolinea il ruolo dei titoli, delle immagini e dei video nella costruzione del senso e nella tematizzazione delle notizie. Si sottolineano le strategie di deresponsabilizzazione del femminicida e di colpevolizzazione della vittima, inclusa la manipolazione del movente, la rappresentazione della vittima come "oppositrice" e l'uso di un linguaggio sensazionalistico. La tesi si basa su un approccio interdisciplinare, combinando teorie semiotiche con ricerche sociologiche sulla violenza di genere, per dimostrare come le routine produttive del giornalismo e il mito dell'oggettività influenzino la narrazione del femminicidio, spesso a discapito di una rappresentazione responsabile.

Il paper esplora la rappresentazione delle donne trans nella serie televisiva "Pose", acclamata per il suo approccio inclusivo. L'obiettivo è analizzare come la serie contribuisca a ridefinire le narrazioni trans nei media, superando i "transgender tropes" negativi del passato. Attraverso un'analisi che combina teoria di genere, studi sulla performatività e ricerche sulla rappresentanza mediatica, il paper riepiloga i concetti di genere, performatività, passing e transnormatività. Analizza quindi la rappresentanza quantitva di persone trans nel cast, nella scrittura e nella produzione di "Pose". Succesivamente, svolge un'analisi contenutistica degli episodi per identificare la costruzione dell'identità dei personaggi, facendo emergere l'importanza della "Realness" e la presenza di transnormatività. Infine esplora la possibilità che la serie adotti un "trans gaze", offrendo una prospettiva autentica e inclusiva. La ricerca mira a valutare se "Pose" riesca a superare gli stereotipi eterocisnormativi, offrendo una rappresentazione autentica e rispettosa delle donne trans, e se riesca a dare una prospettiva nuova e reale.

Este estudio analiza entrevistas realizadas por medios de comunicación a las atletas paralímpicas destacadas Teresa Perales y Bebe Vio, antes de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio y París. Se examina la narrativa emergente sobre la discapacidad que ambas deportistas proyectan, especialmente en relación con sus prótesis, explorando cómo estas narrativas se conectan con nuevos modelos de representación de la discapacidad. Se destaca el papel de los entrevistadores en la configuración y amplificación de estas narrativas.
El método se basa en un análisis semiótico inspirado en las teorías de Greimas-Courtes y Eco, enfocándose en los temas recurrentes y las isotopías utilizadas por las atletas para representar sus experiencias. Los resultados revelan que ambas emplean estrategias de "inspiration porn", aunque de manera diferenciada: una centrada más en el aspecto individual, mientras que la otra subraya el aspecto cultural de la discapacidad. Se sugiere realizar más análisis de este tipo para permitir a personas con discapacidad influyentes presentar el tema de manera más compleja y diversa.

This study investigates ChatGPT-4o's multimodal content generation, highlighting significant disparities in its treatment of sexual content and nudity versus violent and drugrelated themes. Detailed analysis reveals that ChatGPT-4o consistently censors sexual content and nudity, while showing leniency towards violence and drug use. Moreover, a pronounced gender bias emerges, with female-specific content facing stricter regulation compared to male-specific content. This disparity likely stems from media scrutiny and public backlash over past AI controversies, prompting tech companies to impose stringent guidelines on sensitive issues to protect their reputations. Our findings emphasize the urgent need for AI systems to uphold genuine ethical standards and accountability, transcending mere political correctness. This research contributes to the understanding of biases in AI-driven language and multimodal models, calling for more balanced and ethical content moderation practices.

Serialized TV shows are built on complex storylines that can be hard to track and evolve in ways that defy straightforward analysis. This paper introduces a multi-agent system designed to extract and analyze these narrative arcs. Tested on the first season of Grey's Anatomy (ABC 2005-), the system identifies three types of arcs: Anthology (self-contained), Soap (relationship-focused), and Genre-Specific (strictly related to the series' genre). Episodic progressions of these arcs are stored in both relational and semantic (vectorial) databases, enabling structured analysis and comparison. To bridge the gap between automation and critical interpretation, the system is paired with a graphical interface that allows for human refinement using tools to enhance and visualize the data. The system performed strongly in identifying Anthology Arcs and character entities, but its reliance on textual paratexts (such as episode summaries) revealed limitations in recognizing overlapping arcs and subtler dynamics. This approach highlights the potential of combining computational and human expertise in narrative analysis. Beyond television, it offers promise for serialized written formats, where the narrative resides entirely in the text. Future work will explore the integration of multimodal inputs, such as dialogue and visuals, and expand testing across a wider range of genres to refine the system further.

This study evaluates the biases in Gemini. Flash Experimental, a state-ofthe-art large language model (LLM) developed by Google, focusing on content moderation and gender disparities. By comparing its performance to ChatGPTo, examined in a previous work of the author, the analysis highlights some di erences in ethical moderation practices. Gemini. demonstrates reduced gender bias, notably with female-specific prompts achieving a substantial rise in acceptance rates compared to results obtained by ChatGPT-o. It adopts a more permissive stance toward sexual content and maintains relatively high acceptance rates for violent prompts (including gender-specific cases). Despite these changes, whether they constitute an improvement is debatable. While gender bias has been reduced, this reduction comes at the cost of permitting more violent content toward both males and females, potentially normalizing violence rather than mitigating harm. Male-specific prompts still generally receive higher acceptance rates than female-specific ones. These findings underscore the complexities of aligning AI systems with ethical standards, highlighting progress in reducing certain biases while raising concerns about the broader implications of the model's permissiveness. Ongoing refinements are essential to achieve moderation practices that ensure transparency, fairness, and inclusivity without amplifying harmful content.

Already in 2005 the American environmentalist (and 350.org founder) Bill McKibben pointed out the lack of awareness about climate change and other environmental issues, while addressing a specific call for action to arts: “Oddly, though we know about it, we don’t know about it. La pervasività delle nuove tecnologie, a cui abbiamo assistito negli ultimi dieci anni, ha modificato molti aspetti della nostra quotidianità e ha introdotto linguaggi e codici specifici che hanno influenzato i diversi ambiti disciplinari del "fare". L'uso dello strumento computer si è imposto come medium di riferimento nella maggior parte delle arti e professioni. Nel mondo occidentale l’attenzione è puntata sull’analisi delle trasformazioni, innovazioni e conseguenze legate all'avvento dei nuovi media, in grado di influenzare enormemente le sfera della produzione artistica e intellettuale, comprese l'architettura, l'arte, la musica e in generale la comunicazione creativa.

Mixed Media è stato il primo festival in Italia di respiro internazionale, svoltosi dal 26 al 28 Maggio 2006 negli spazi di Hangar Bicocca, che si è proposto come una occasione di incontro e di presentazione di alcune realtà artistiche e professionali che in questo meccanismo operano e si muovono. Non come una vetrina di prodotti proposti come paradigmatici e simbolici, quanto piuttosto come un luogo di condivisione delle esperienze e occasione di confronto sulle metodologie, con una particolare attenzione ai processi della produzione artistica digitale piuttosto che alla consacrazione o valutazione formale dei risultati finali. Attraverso mostre, incontri, seminari, concerti e ambienti sonori si vuole cercare di tracciare percorsi e connessioni fra le parti, individuando le modalità secondo cui il 'digitale' sta modificando le strutture culturali e le modalità percettive.

Dall'8 Novembre al 31 Dicembre 2007 gli spazi della Traffic Gallery hanno ospitato la mostra “op7”, del collettivo milanese otolab,  a cura di Marco Mancuso e Claudia D’Alonzo. Otolab nasce nel 2001 come un’unica identità entro la quale collaborano musicisti, djs, vjs, video-artisti, video makers, web designers, grafici e architetti legati dalla ricerca di compenetrazione tra immagine e suono. Attraverso una prassi di tipo laboratoriale, incentrata sulla condivisione di esperienze e saperi, otolab ha prodotto negli anni progetti collettivi ed individuali, che vanno dal live media all’installazione, dall’elettronica sperimentale alla techno, modi differenti attraverso i quali sperimentare percezioni ibride di suoni e visioni sintetici.

La mostra presso la Traffic Gallery si è proposta di documentare e reinterpretare uno dei più iconici lavori live di otolab, “op7”, nato da una commissione di Marco Mancuso nell’ambito della curatela del festival Mixed Media 2006, allo scopo di invitare il collettivo milanese a dialogare in modalità site-specific con l’opera “I sette palazzi celesti” dell’artista belga Anselm Kiefer. Performance audiovisiva, è presentata quindi in mostra attraverso un’installazione video dell’opera, un trittico e sette stampe fotografiche tratte da stills del materiale video originale.

In the last years the spread of informatics has brought to a revolution that is still in progress, both regarding the instruments and the ways of making art, and the modalities of production and display of the creative act. A constant contamination and reprocessing of the languages is destroying the boundaries among the different forms of artistic expression and, at the same time, is perceiving the viewer as an active character, involved in multiple forms of participation: live media, networking, interactive exhibitions, interaction, urban design. Direct Digital puts together in a multidisciplinary platform the most interesting expressions of these creativity forms, in order to allow to an heterogeneous and full of artists, fans and thinkers audience, to meet and exchange views about making art in the digital age.

Direct digital has been a new media art exhibion which will took place from 30th May 2009 to 28th June 2009 in Modena and Carpi (Italy), in the Ex Ospedale Sant’Agostino and in Palazzo Pio, under the conception and artistic direction of Gilberto Caleffi. Direct Digital proposed a thick calendar of five sections, Exhibition, Live Media, Workshop, Cinema, Contest in order to show a detailed perspective of the most recent developments of art and creativity linked to the use of digital technologies.  Artists included: Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Andy Warhol, Douglas Gordon, Philippe Parreno, Sam Taylor-Wood, Tony Oursler, Chris Levine, Julian Opie, Gina Czarnecki, Heinrich Gresbeck, Golan Levin, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Takahiro Matsuo, Jin-Yo Mok, Kenichi Okada, Agostino Di Scipio, Mimmo Rotella.

Treviso, November 2008. Fabrica, Benetton's communication research centre, hosts on 25-28 November 2008 a workshop held by futurologist and author Bruce Sterling, one of the founders and leading promulgators of cyberpunk sci-fi. The Sterling workshop theme takes its cue from the concept of generative art, i.e. a process which develops with a certain degree of autonomy to produce a work of art or design. When generative art is computer-based, windows are opened onto otherwise unimaginable fields of human creativity. The computer becomes a vehicle for exploring new territories and boosting our understanding of creativity as an inseparable synthesis of art and science.

The workshop was also enriched by a contribution from Marco Mancuso, who is a critic, art curator and the founder and director of Digicult. Mancuso attended the presentation of the workshop’s results and offer his comments as a conclusion to the proceedings.

We are witnessing the disintegration of the belief that the Internet was, for its unique nature, a free, participatory medium, in contrast to the medium of television. Positivity of the early years of the Internet is giving way to a situation in which one cannot help but admit that the Internet, even with large areas of autonomy, is subject to the same dangerous political and economic dynamics of traditional media. It becomes crucial not just to understand what is the most democratic medium of the third millennium, but rather open our eyes to the dual nature of all media, to identify ways in which we learn to move strategically between truth and deception.

Globalne Ocieplenie / The Mediagate exhibition at GALERIA NT / Imaginarium in Łódź, Poland from 16/04 to 16/05/2010, was curated by Marco Mancuso and Claudia D'Alonzo. It aimed at reflecting, through the new media artworks by international artists, our constant battle between questioning and faith towards the media, without suggesting solutions, but triggering questions and doubts about our role as users.

In January 2016, the Goethe-Institut in south-west Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain) launched Streaming Egos: a project about the ancient, and yet urgent, issue of identity reframed into contemporary digital culture. Now, the outcome of the artistic research is available online.

The European project Streaming Egos brought together media experts, artists, critics and curators who tackled the theme of digital identity by exploring its risks, limits and advantages when facing the blurred borders in-between virtual and real life. Conceived by the Goethe-Institut in the six participating countries, coordinated by the Goethe-Institut of Paris, curated by the Slow Media Institut and in cooperation with the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, the project explored the ways digital identities come into being, change and develop under the influence of social media, within the framework of the socio-political status quo of each country. The project resulted in the production of digital materials, artworks and writings that converged into different forms and events: a digital platform for participants to contribute to transnational debate by publicly sharing their critical thoughts and reflections, the exhibition Ego Update. The Future of the Digital Identity run on the 16th and 17th January 2016 in conjunction with the Identity Convention, two days of meetings and debates during which relevant common topics have been identified which have been deepened by contributions to the publication

“605 prepared dc-motors, cardboard boxes” è stata la prima mostra personale in un museo italiano dell’artista svizzero Zimoun, noto per le sue opere che uniscono sound art e architettura degli spazi. L’esposizione ha coinvolto le cinque sale della Palazzina dei Giardini di Modena dal 22/10/2016 al 05/03/2017, ciascuna delle quali è stata abitata da un'installazione cinetica costruita con materiali semplici - scatole di cartone, sfere di cotone, cavi di metallo, legno, etc. - e corredata da sistemi meccanici che generano suoni e rumori. Complessi organismi viventi in grado di abitare lo spazio in cui vengono allestiti per mezzo di un sottile e mai banale rapporto tra suono e volumetria circostante.

Attraverso oggetti industriali di uso comune e costruzioni minimaliste, Zimoun esplora il ritmo meccanico, la tensione tra i modelli ordinati del Modernismo e la forza caotica della vita. Nel suo lavoro si riuniscono le competenze dell'ingegnere, dell'architetto, dell'artigiano, del ricercatore, dell'arrangiatore e del direttore d'orchestra.

L’esposizione è stata accompagnata dal catalogo "ZIMOUN - 605 prepared dc-motors, cardboard boxes", libro-oggetto sonoro a cura di Filippo Aldovini, autore dei testi insieme al critico e curatore Marco Mancuso, direttore di Digicult. La pubblicazione, in edizioni numerate, è stata disegnata e impaginata da Luca Lattuga con fotografie di Paolo Terzi, ed è prodotta dalla Galleria civica di Modena con al contributo di Scatolificio Cartotecnica Modenese. Il cofanetto riprende nelle fattezze e nei materiali le scelte estetiche dell’artista. Il libro/oggetto è stampato su carta pregiata e confezionato con cucitura filo refe a vista lungo il dorso. Due quadranti in cartone microtriplo avana applicati in I e IV di copertina conferiscono un sapore materico e artigianale al lavoro.

Recent years are witnessing radical transformations in the relationships among art, science, design and society. The progressive de-institutionalization of the forms of production, management and consumption of material and immaterial goods brought by new technologies (desktop manufacturing, DIYscience, 2.0 communities) is reshaping the way we conceive culture, giving more importance to bottom-up taxonomies of reality (i.e. the folksonomies) and questioning traditional paths of change (Open Innovation) and power (p2p communities). Analytically we can say that this phenomena are acting both horizontally and vertically. Horizontally, they are blurring the borders between different fields and disciplines, merging methodologies, languages, tacit and explicit know-hows. Vertically, they are affecting the distinction between “high”, academic approaches and “low”, ingenue ones. This cross-pollination creates enthusiasms and skepticisms at the same time. On one side it's perceived as an unforeseen expansion that will led to continuous innovation. On the other side it's seen a a menace for stability, quality and fairness.

This monographic issue explores this panorama according to six curators specialized in five different fields. Firstly, Bertram Niessen investigates the social ambiguity of digital creativity, the chances given by bottom-up co-production and the challenges offered by web-based practices of creative sharing. Secondly, Claudia D’Alonzo and Marco Mancuso focus on the changes taking place in relation to creation practice, dissemination and fruition of audio-visual artistic contents. Thirdly, Elena Biserna provides an overview on musical artistic practices and, at the same time, showing its significance in the sphere of cultural and everyday practices. As fourth, Sabina Barcucci investigates reasons, state of the art and developments of the relationships among design, education and complexity, looking at the new cognitive forms as the output of such phenomenon. Finally, Alessandro Delfanti examines the problem of the transformation of science expert epistemology, focusing on the political, artistic and cultural dimensions of
biohacking and DIYbio.
