David Grondin
I’m a Professor in the Department of Communication at Université de Montréal.
Background - I was trained in US foreign policy, American history, and American studies, as well as in political science, International Relations and Security Studies. Most of my work is interdisciplinary by nature and I engage regularly with communication and media scholars and political geographers to study global politics, culture, and media.
Teaching - I teach international communication, media studies, popular culture, digital media, surveillance studies, mobility studies, the politics of security and contemporary geopolitics, critical infrastructures, algorithmic culture, war and militarization, critical and historical perspectives on American studies, feminism and gender studies, as well as global politics.
Research - Though my research interests are varied and wide, my new project focuses on infrastructures, mobility, borders, and North American governance, looking at governing data, people, objects though the digital. It specifically foregrounds the role of algorithms in surveillance and security. Most of my research has centered on the US national security state and the transformation of the American ways of war in the digital age, taking on issues of secrecy, surveillance, and security technology, as well as exploring the cinematic and televisual rendition of the national security state. I also keep an eye out for “satire journalism”, American television and new media.
